We investigate the equation $(u_t + (f(u))_x)_x = f''(u) (u_x)^2/2$ where $f(u)$ is a given smooth function. Typically $f(u)= u^2/2$ or $u^3/3$. This equation models unidirectional and weakly nonlinear waves for the variational wave equation $u_{tt} - c(u) (c(u)u_x)_x =0$ which models some liquid crystals with a natural sinusoidal $c$. The equation itself is also the Euler-Lagrange equation of a variational problem. Two natural classes of solutions can be associated with this equation. A conservative solution will preserve its energy in time, while a dissipative weak solution loses energy at the time when singularities appear. Conservative solutions are globally defined, forward and backward in time, and preserve interesting geometric features, such as the Hamiltonian structure. On the other hand, dissipative solutions appear to be more natural from the physical point of view.
We establish the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem within the class of conservative solutions, for initial data having finite energy and assuming that the flux function $f$ has Lipschitz continuous second-order derivative. In the case where $f$ is convex, the Cauchy problem is well-posed also within the class of dissipative solutions. However, when $f$ is not convex, we show that the dissipative solutions do not depend continuously on the initial data.
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the solution of quasilinear parametric variational inequalities posed in a cylinder with a thin neck, and we obtain the limit problem.
Let $1<p \leq \infty$. We provide an asymptotic characterization of continuous viscosity solutions $u$ of the normalized $p$-Laplacian $Δ_{p\,\mathbb{G}}^N u=0$ in any Carnot group $\mathbb{G}$.
We discuss a 1D variational problem modeling an elastic sheet on water, lifted at one end. Its terms include the membrane and bending energy of the sheet as well as terms due to gravity and surface tension. By studying a suitable Gamma-limit, we identify a parameter regime in which the sheet is inextensible, and the bending energy and weight of the sheet are negligible. In this regime, the problem simplifies to one with a simple and explicit solution.
In this paper, we study the Wasserstein gradient flow structure of the porous medium equation. We prove that, for the case of $q$-Gaussians on the real line, the functional derived by the JKO-discretization scheme is asymptotically equivalent to a rate-large-deviation-like functional. The result explains why the Wasserstein metric as well as the combination of it with the Tsallis-entropy play an important role.
We use a method, inspired by Pohozeav's work, to study asymptotic behaviors of non-variational elliptic systems in dimension n greater than two. The results apply to changing sign solutions.
An asymptotic analysis is performed for thin anisotropic elastic plate clamped along its lateral side and also supported at a small area $θ_{h}$ of one base with diameter of the same order as the plate thickness $h\ll1.$ A three-dimensional boundary layer in the vicinity of the support $θ_{h}$ is involved into the asymptotic form which is justified by means of the previously derived weighted inequality of Korn's type provides an error estimate with the bound $ ch^{1/2} \left | \ln h\right| .$ Ignoring this boundary layer effect reduces the precision order down to $\left| \ln h\right| ^{-1/2}.$…
We consider various versions of the obstacle and thin-obstacle problems, we interpret them as variational inequalities, with non-smooth constraint, and prove that they satisfy a new constrained Lojasiewicz inequality. The difficulty lies in the fact that, since the constraint is non-analytic, the pioneering method of L. Simon (Ann. of Math. 118(3), 1983) does not apply and we have to exploit a better understanding on the constraint itself. We then apply this inequality to two associated problems. First we combine it with an abstract result on parabolic variational inequalities, to prove the co…
This article is focused on a multidimensional nonlinear variational wave equation which is the Euler-Lagrange equation of a variational principle arising form the theory of nematic liquid crystals. By using the method of characteristics, we show that the smooth solutions for the spherically-symmetric variational wave equation breakdown in finite time, even for the arbitrarily small initial energy.
We introduce a variational structure for the Fourier-Cattaneo (FC) system which is a second-order hyperbolic system. This variational structure is inspired by the large-deviation rate functional for the Kac process which is closely linked to the FC system. Using this variational formulation we introduce appropriate solution concepts for the FC equation and prove an a priori estimate which connects this variational structure to an appropriate Lyapunov function and Fisher information, the so-called FIR inequality. Finally, we use this formulation and estimate to study the diffusive and hyperboli…
We derive a novel two-component generalization of the nonlinear variational wave equation as a model for the director field of a nematic liquid crystal with a variable order parameter. The two-component nonlinear variational wave equation admits solutions locally in time. We show that a particular long time asymptotic expansion around a constant state in a moving frame satisfy the two-component Hunter--Saxton system.
We study traveling wave solutions of the nonlinear variational wave equation. In particular, we show how to obtain global, bounded, weak traveling wave solutions from local, classical ones. The resulting waves consist of monotone and constant segments, glued together at points where at least one one-sided derivative is unbounded. Applying the method of proof to the Camassa--Holm equation, we recover some well-known results on its traveling wave solutions.
We establish the existence of a conservative weak solution to the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear variational wave equation $u_{tt} - c(u)(c(u)u_x)_x=0$, for initial data of finite energy. Here $c(\cdot)$ is any smooth function with uniformly positive bounded values.
We establish via variational methods the existence of a standing wave together with an estimate on the convergence to its asymptotic states for a bistable system of partial differential equations on a periodic domain. The main tool is a replacement lemma which has as a corollary a maximum principle for local minimizers.
We construct infinitely many real-valued, time-periodic breather solutions of power-type nonlinear wave equations. These solutions are obtained from critical points of a dual functional and they are weakly localized in space. Our abstract framework allows to find similar existence results for the Klein-Gordon equation or biharmonic wave equations.
We investigate a one-dimensional nonlinear wave system which arises from a variational principle modeling a type of cholesteric liquid crystals. The problem treated here is the Cauchy problem for the same wave speed case with initial data on the parabolic degenerating line. By introducing a partial hodograph transformation, we establish the local existence of smooth solutions in a weighted metric space based on the iteration method. A classical solution of the primary problem is constructed by converting the solution in the partial hodograph variables to that in the original variables.
We give a variational proof of global stability for bistable travelling waves of scalar reaction-diffusion equations on the real line. In particular, we recover some of the classical results by P. Fife and J.B. McLeod without any use of the maximum principle. The method that is illustrated here in the simplest possible setting has been successfully applied to more general parabolic or hyperbolic gradient-like systems.
In this paper we study the existence of ground state solution for an indefinite variational problem of the type $$ \left\{\begin{array}{l} -Δu+(V(x)-W(x))u=f(x,u) \quad \mbox{in} \quad \R^{N}, u\in H^{1}(\R^{N}), \end{array}\right. \eqno{(P)} $$ where $N \geq 2$, $V,W:\mathbb{R}^N \to \mathbb{R}$ and $f:\mathbb{R}^N \times \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ are continuous functions verifying some technical conditions and $f$ possesses a critical growth. Here, we will consider the case where the problem is asymptotically periodic, that is, $V$ is $\mathbb{Z}^N$-periodic, $W$ goes to 0 at infinity and $…
The paper introduces a new way to construct dissipative solutions to a second order variational wave equation. By a variable transformation, from the nonlinear PDE one obtains a semilinear hyperbolic system with sources. In contrast with the conservative case, here the source terms are discontinuous and the discontinuities are not always crossed transversally. Solutions to the semilinear system are obtained by an approximation argument, relying on Kolmogorov's compactness theorem. Reverting to the original variables, one recovers a solution to the nonlinear wave equation where the total energy…
In this note we obtain an asymptotic estimate for growth behavior of variational eigenvalues of the $p-$fractional eigenvalue problem on a smooth bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary condition.

By exploiting a variational technique based upon projecting over the Pohozaev manifold, we prove existence of positive solutions for a class of nonlinear fractional Schrodinger equations having a nonhomogenous nonautonomous asymptotically linear nonlinearity.
We consider steady three-dimensional gravity-capillary water waves with vorticity propagating on water of finite depth. We prove a variational principle for doubly periodic waves with relative velocities given by Beltrami vector fields, under general assumptions on the wave profile.
We derive an asymptotic solution of the vacuum Einstein equations that describes the propagation and diffraction of a localized, large-amplitude, rapidly-varying gravitational wave. We compare and contrast the resulting theory of strongly nonlinear geometrical optics for the Einstein equations with nonlinear geometrical optics theories for variational wave equations.
We consider a model for the propagation and absorption of electromagnetic waves (in the time-harmonic regime) in a magnetised plasma. We present a rigorous derivation of the model and several boundary conditions modelling wave injection into the plasma. Then we propose several variational formulations, mixed and non-mixed, and prove their well-posedness thanks to a theorem by Sébelin et~al. Finally, we propose a non-overlapping domain decomposition framework, show its well-posedness and equivalence with the one-domain formulation. These results appear strongly linked to the spectral properties…
We prove, under generic assumptions, that the special variational traveling wave that minimizes the exponentially weighted Ginzburg-Landau functional associated with scalar reaction-diffusion equations in infinite cylinders is the long-time attractor for the solutions of the initial value problems with front-like initial data. The convergence to this traveling wave is exponentially fast. The obtained result is mainly a consequence of the gradient flow structure of the considered equation in the exponentially weighted spaces and does not depend on the precise details of the problem. It strength…
The direct method based on the definition of conserved currents of a system of differential equations is applied to compute the space of conservation laws of the (1+1)-dimensional wave equation in the light-cone coordinates. Then Noether's theorem yields the space of variational symmetries of the corresponding functional. The results are also presented for the standard space-time form of the wave equation.

Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD) refers to a class of methods for Bayesian inference based on interacting particle systems. In this paper, we consider the originally proposed deterministic dynamics as well as a stochastic variant, each of which represent one of the two main paradigms in Bayesian computational statistics: variational inference and Markov chain Monte Carlo. As it turns out, these are tightly linked through a correspondence between gradient flow structures and large-deviation principles rooted in statistical physics. To expose this relationship, we develop the cotangent …
We consider a family of linear viscoelastic shells with thickness $2\varepsilon$ ( $\varepsilon$ , small parameter), clamped along a portion of their lateral face, all having the same middle surface $S$. We formulate the three-dimensional mechanical problem in curvilinear coordinates and provide existence and uniqueness of (weak) solution of the corresponding three-dimensional variational problem. We are interested in studying the limit behavior of the three-dimensional problems and their solutions (displacements $\mathbf{u}^\varepsilon$ of components $u_i^\varepsilon$) when $\varepsilon$ tend…
Periodic waves of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are identified in the context of a new variational problem with two constraints. The advantage of this variational problem is that its non-degenerate local minimizers are stable in the time evolution of the mKdV equation, whereas the saddle points are unstable. We explore the analytical representation of periodic waves given by Jacobi elliptic functions and compute numerically critical points of the constrained variational problem. A broken pitchfork bifurcation of three smooth solution families is found. Two families represent (…
We study diffusion and wave equations in networks. Combining semigroup and variational methods we obtain well-posedness and many nice properties of the solutions in general L^p -context. Following earlier articles of other authors, we discuss how the spectrum of the generator can be connected to the structure of the network. We conclude by describing asymptotic behavior of solutions to the diffusion problem.
Fully localised solitary waves are travelling-wave solutions of the three-dimensional gravity-capillary water wave problem which decay to zero in every horizontal spatial direction. Their existence has been predicted on the basis of numerical simulations and model equations (in which context they are usually referred to as `lumps'), and a mathematically rigorous existence theory for strong surface tension (Bond number $β$ greater than $\frac{1}{3}$) has recently been given. In this article we present an existence theory for the physically more realistic case $0<β<\frac{1}{3}$. A classical vari…
Periodic waves in the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation have been previously characterized as constrained minimizers of energy subject to fixed momentum and mass. Here we characterize these periodic waves as constrained minimizers of the quadratic form of energy subject to fixed cubic part of energy and the zero mean. This new variational characterization allows us to unfold the existence region of travelling periodic waves and to give a sharp criterion for spectral stability of periodic waves with respect to perturbations of the same period. The sharp stability criterion is given by the m…
This paper presents an existence theory for solitary waves at the interface between a thin ice sheet (modelled using the Cosserat theory of hyperelastic shells) and an ideal fluid (of finite depth and in irrotational motion) for sufficiently large values of a dimensionless parameter $γ$. We establish the existence of a minimiser of the wave energy ${\mathcal E}$ subject to the constraint ${\mathcal I}=2μ$, where ${\mathcal I}$ is the horizontal impulse and $0< μ\ll 1$, and show that the solitary waves detected by our variational method converge (after an appropriate rescaling) to solutions of …
This paper describes a method for deriving approximate equations for irrotational water waves. The method is based on a 'relaxed' variational principle, i.e., on a Lagrangian involving as many variables as possible. This formulation is particularly suitable for the construction of approximate water wave models, since it allows more freedom while preserving the variational structure. The advantages of this relaxed formulation are illustrated with various examples in shallow and deep waters, as well as arbitrary depths. Using subordinate constraints (e.g., irrotationality or free surface imperme…
