We give a variational proof of global stability for bistable travelling waves of scalar reaction-diffusion equations on the real line. In particular, we recover some of the classical results by P. Fife and J.B. McLeod without any use of the maximum principle. The method that is illustrated here in the simplest possible setting has been successfully applied to more general parabolic or hyperbolic gradient-like systems.
This paper is concerned with the existence and the stability of travelling wave solutions to a bistable reaction-diffusion equation with a jump discontinuious point on nonlinear term. Sub-super solution method is used throughout this paper. As a matter of fact, this nonlinear discontinuity term is frequently emerging when study the travelling wave solution of reaction-diffusion-ODE systems. Hence, it is meaningful to consider this kind of problem.
The paper is devoted to a reaction-diffusion equation with delay arising in modelling the immune response. We prove the existence of travelling waves in the bistable case using the Leray-Schauder method. In difference with the previous works, we do not assume here quasi-monotonicity of the delayed reaction term.
We are concerned with travelling wave solutions arising in a reaction diffusion equation with bistable and nonlocal nonlinearity, for which the comparison principle does not hold. Stability of the equilibrium $u\equiv 1$ is not assumed. We construct a travelling wave solution connecting 0 to an unknown steady state, which is "above and away", from the intermediate equilibrium. For focusing kernels we prove that, as expected, the wave connects 0 to 1. Our results also apply readily to the nonlocal ignition case.
We consider a bistable ($0\textless{}θ\textless{}1$ being the three constant steady states) delayed reaction diffusion equation, which serves as a model in population dynamics. The problem does not admit any comparison principle. This prevents the use of classical technics and, as a consequence, it is far from obvious to understand the behaviour of a possible travelling wave in $+\infty$. Combining refined {\it a priori} estimates and a Leray Schauder topological degree argument, we construct a travelling wave connecting 0 in $-\infty$ to \lq\lq something" which is strictly above the unstable …
We consider the damped wave equation αu_tt + u_t = u_xx - V'(u) on the whole real line, where V is a bistable potential. This equation has travelling front solutions of the form u(x,t) = h(x-st) which describe a moving interface between two different steady states of the system, one of which being the global minimum of V. We show that, if the initial data are sufficiently close to the profile of a front for large |x|, the solution of the damped wave equation converges uniformly on R to a travelling front as t goes to plus infinity. The proof of this global stability result is inspired by a rec…
We extend the result on the stability of travelling waves for stochastic Nagumo equations in [St] to general bistable reaction-diffusion equations with both additive and multiplicative noise, using a variational approach based on functional inequalities. Our analysis yields explicit estimates on the rate of stability that can be shown in special examples to be optimal. In this review, we provide a concise summary of several important mathematical results for stochastic travelling waves generated by monostable and bistable reaction-diffusion stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). In particular, this survey is intended for readers new to the topic but who have some knowledge in any sub-field of differential equations. The aim is to bridge different backgrounds and to identify the most important common principles and techniques currently applied to the analysis of stochastic travelling wave problems. Monostable and bistable reaction terms are found …
Reaction-diffusion equations appear in biology and chemistry, and combine linear diffusion with different kind of reaction terms. Some of them are remarkable from the mathematical point of view, since they admit families of travelling waves that describe the asymptotic behaviour of a larger class of solutions $0\leq u(x,t)\leq 1$ of the problem posed in the real line. We investigate here the existence of waves with constant propagation speed, when the linear diffusion is replaced by the "slow" doubly nonlinear diffusion. In the present setting we consider bistable reaction terms, which present…
We are interested in the existence of depolarization waves in the human brain. These waves propagate in the grey matter and are absorbed in the white matter. We consider a two-dimensional model $u_t=Δu + f(u) \1_{|y|\leq R} - αu \1_{|y|>R}$, with $f$ a bistable nonlinearity taking effect only on the domain $\Rm\times [-R,R]$, which represents the grey matter layer. We study the existence, the stability and the energy of non-trivial asymptotic profiles of possible travelling fronts. For this purpose, we present dynamical systems technics and graphic criteria based on Sturm-Liouville theory and …
We consider the equation $u_t=u_{xx}+b(x)u(1-u),$ $x\in\mathbb R,$ where $b(x)$ is a nonnegative measure on $\mathbb R$ that is periodic in $x.$ In the case where $b(x)$ is a smooth periodic function, it is known that there exists a travelling wave with speed $c$ for any $c\geq c^*(b),$ where $c^*(b)$ is a certain positive number depending on $b.$ Such a travelling wave is often called a \lq\lq pulsating travelling wave" or a \lq\lq periodic travelling wave", and $c^*(b)$ is called the \lq\lq minimal speed". In this paper, we first extend this theory by showing the existence of the minimal spe…
We are concerned with the asymptotic behaviour of classical solutions of systems of the form u_t = Au_xx + f(u, u_x), x in R, t>0, u(x,t) a vector in RN, with u(x,0)= U(x), where A is a positive-definite diagonal matrix and f is a 'bistable' nonlinearity satisfying conditions which guarantee the existence of a comparison principle. Suppose that there is a travelling-front solution w with velocity c, that connects two stable equilibria of f. We show that if U is bounded, uniformly continuously differentiable and such that w(x) - U(x) is small when the modulus of x is large, then there exists y …
We discuss bichromatic (two-color) front solutions to the bistable Nagumo lattice differential equation. Such fronts connect the stable spatially homogeneous equilibria with spatially heterogeneous 2-periodic equilibria and hence are not monotonic like the standard monochromatic fronts. We provide explicit criteria that can determine whether or not these fronts are stationary and show that the bichromatic fronts can travel in parameter regimes where the monochromatic fronts are pinned. The presence of these bichromatic waves allows the two stable homogeneous equlibria to both spread out throug…
We construct families of smooth travelling-wave solutions to the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation (SQG). These solutions can be viewed as the equivalents for this equation of the vortex anti-vortex pairs in the context of the incompressible Euler equation. Our argument relies on the stream function formulation and eventually amounts to solving a fractional nonlinear elliptic equation by variational methods.
The goal of this paper is to investigate an instance of the tragedy of the commons in spatially distributed harvesting games. The model we choose is that of a fishes' population that is governed by a parabolic bistable equation and that fishermen harvest. We assume that, when no fisherman is present, the fishes' population is invading (mathematically, there is an invading travelling front). Is it possible that fishermen, when acting selfishly, each in his or her own best interest, might lead to a reversal of the travelling wave and, consequently, to an extinction of the global population? To a…
We establish via variational methods the existence of a standing wave together with an estimate on the convergence to its asymptotic states for a bistable system of partial differential equations on a periodic domain. The main tool is a replacement lemma which has as a corollary a maximum principle for local minimizers.
We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in dimension two with periodic conditions in one direction, or equivalently on the product space $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}_L$ where $L > 0$ and $\mathbb{T}_L = \mathbb{R} / L \mathbb{Z}.$ We focus on the variational problem consisting in minimizing the Ginzburg-Landau energy under a fixed momentum constraint. We prove that there exists a threshold value for $L$ below which minimizers are the one-dimensional dark solitons, and above which no minimizer can be one-dimensional.
Considered herein are a number of variants of the Boussinesq type systems modeling surface water waves. Such equations were derived by different authors to describe the two-way propagation of long gravity waves. A question of existence of special solutions, the so called solitary waves, is of a particular interest. There are a number of studies relying on a variational approach and a concentration-compactness argument. These proofs are technically very demanding and may vary significantly from one system to another. Our approach is based on the implicit function theorem, which makes the treatm…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of a traveling front and of its speed for the homogeneous heat equation in the half-plane with a Neumann boundary reaction term of non-balanced bistable type or of combustion type. We also establish the monotonicity of the front and, in the bistable case, its behavior at infinity. In contrast with the classical bistable interior reaction model, its behavior at the side of the invading state is of power type, while at the side of the invaded state its decay is exponential. These decay results rely on the construction of a family of explicit bistable traveli…
We consider the homogeneous integro-differential equation$\partial \_t u=J*u-u+f(u)$ with a monostable nonlinearity $f$. Our interest is twofold: we investigate the existence/non existence of travelling waves, and the propagation properties of the Cauchy problem. When the dispersion kernel $J$ is exponentially bounded, travelling waves are known to exist and solutions of the Cauchy problem typically propagate at a constant speed \cite{Schumacher1980}, \cite{Weinberger1982}, \cite{Carr2004}, \cite{Coville2007a}, \cite{Coville2008a}, \cite{Yagisita2009}. %When the dispersion kernel $J$ is exponen…
We prove the existence of travelling-wave solutions for a system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations arising in nonlinear optics. Such a system describes second-harmonic generation in optical materials with $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity. To prove the existence of travelling waves, we employ the method of concentration compactness to prove the relative compactness of minimizing sequences of the associated variational problem.
This paper addresses the existence and spectral stability of traveling fronts for nonlinear hyperbolic equations with a positive "damping" term and a reaction function of bistable type. Particular cases of the former include the relaxed Allen-Cahn equation and the nonlinear version of the telegrapher's equation with bistable reaction term. The existence theory of the fronts is revisited, yielding useful properties such as exponential decay to the asymptotic rest states and a variational formula for the unique wave speed. The spectral problem associated to the linearized equation around the fro…
We establish existence of travelling waves to the gradient system $u_t = u_{zz} - \nabla W(u)$ connecting two minima of $W$ when $u : \R \times (0,\infty) \larrow \R^N$, that is, we establish existence of a pair $(U,c) \in [C^2(\R)]^N \by (0,\infty)$, satisfying \[ \{{array}{l} U_{xx} - \nabla W (U) = - c U_x U(\pm \infty) = a^{\pm}, {array}. \] where $a^{\pm}$ are local minima of the potential $W \in C_{\textrm{loc}}^2(\R^N)$ with $W(a^-)< W(a^+)=0$ and $N \geq 1$. Our method is variational and based on the minimization of the functional $E_c (U) = \int_{\R}\Big\{{1/2}|U_x|^2 + W(U) \Big\}e^{…
We look for travelling wave fields $$ E(x,y,z,t)= U(x,y) \cos(kz+ωt)+ \widetilde U(x,y)\sin(kz+ωt),\quad (x,y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^3,\, t\in\mathbb{R} $$ satisfying Maxwell's equations in a nonlinear medium which is not necessarily cylindrically symmetric. The nonlinearity of the medium enters Maxwell's equations by postulating a nonlinear material law $D=\varepsilon E+χ(x,y, \langle |E|^2\rangle)E$ between the electric field $E$, its time averaged intensity $\langle |E|^2\rangle$ and the electric displacement field $D$. We derive a new semilinear elliptic problem for the profiles $U,\widetilde U:\…
Periodic waves in the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation have been previously characterized as constrained minimizers of energy subject to fixed momentum and mass. Here we characterize these periodic waves as constrained minimizers of the quadratic form of energy subject to fixed cubic part of energy and the zero mean. This new variational characterization allows us to unfold the existence region of travelling periodic waves and to give a sharp criterion for spectral stability of periodic waves with respect to perturbations of the same period. The sharp stability criterion is given by the m…
We study the nonlinear equation $i \partial_t ψ= (\sqrt{-Δ+ m^2} - m) ψ- ( |x|^{-1} \ast |ψ|^2 ) ψ$ on $\RR^3$, which is known to describe the dynamics of pseudo-relativistic boson stars in the mean-field limit. For positive mass parameters, $m > 0$, we prove existence of travelling solitary waves, $ψ(t,x) = e^{i t μ} \sol_{v}(x-vt)$, with speed $|v| < 1$, where $c=1$ corresponds to the speed of light in our units. Due to the lack of Lorentz covariance, such travelling solitary waves cannot be obtained by applying a Lorentz boost to a solitary wave at rest (with $v=0$). To overcome this diffic…
This paper describes a method for deriving approximate equations for irrotational water waves. The method is based on a 'relaxed' variational principle, i.e., on a Lagrangian involving as many variables as possible. This formulation is particularly suitable for the construction of approximate water wave models, since it allows more freedom while preserving the variational structure. The advantages of this relaxed formulation are illustrated with various examples in shallow and deep waters, as well as arbitrary depths. Using subordinate constraints (e.g., irrotationality or free surface imperme…
Fully localised solitary waves are travelling-wave solutions of the three-dimensional gravity-capillary water wave problem which decay to zero in every horizontal spatial direction. Their existence has been predicted on the basis of numerical simulations and model equations (in which context they are usually referred to as `lumps'), and a mathematically rigorous existence theory for strong surface tension (Bond number $β$ greater than $\frac{1}{3}$) has recently been given. In this article we present an existence theory for the physically more realistic case $0<β<\frac{1}{3}$. A classical vari…
Partial differential equations endowed with a Hamiltonian structure, like the Korteweg--de Vries equation and many other more or less classical models, are known to admit rich families of periodic travelling waves. The stability theory for these waves is still in its infancy though. The issue has been tackled by various means. Of course, it is always possible to address stability from the spectral point of view. However, the link with nonlinear stability -in fact, \emph{orbital} stability, since we are dealing with space-invariant problems-, is far from being straightforward when the best spec…
We study the modulational stability of periodic travelling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger type. In particular, we prove that the characteristics of the quasi-linear system of equations resulting from a slow modulation approximation satisfy the same equation, up to a change in variables, as the normal form of the linearized spectrum crossing the origin. This normal form is taken from arXiv:1910.05392, where Leisman et al. compute the spectrum of the linearized operator near the origin via an analysis of Jordan chains. We derive the modulation equations using Whitham's form…
