We are concerned with the asymptotic behaviour of classical solutions of systems of the form u_t = Au_xx + f(u, u_x), x in R, t>0, u(x,t) a vector in RN, with u(x,0)= U(x), where A is a positive-definite diagonal matrix and f is a 'bistable' nonlinearity satisfying conditions which guarantee the existence of a comparison principle. Suppose that there is a travelling-front solution w with velocity c, that connects two stable equilibria of f. We show that if U is bounded, uniformly continuously differentiable and such that w(x) - U(x) is small when the modulus of x is large, then there exists y in R such that u(., t) converges to w(.+y-ct) in the C1 norm at an exponential rate as t tends to infinity. Our approach extends an idea developed by Roquejoffre, Terman and Volpert in the convectionless case, where f is independent of u_x.
We consider a diffusion model with limit cycle reaction functions, in the presence of convection. We select a set of functions derived from a realistic reaction model: the Schnakenberg equations. This resultant form is unsymmetrical. We find a transformation which maps the irregular equations into model form. Next we transform the dependent variables into polar form. From here, a travelling wave analysis is performed on the radial variable. Results are complex, but we make some simple estimates. We carry out numerical experiments to test our analysis. An initial `knock' starts the propagation …
In Part II of this series of papers, we consider an initial-boundary value problem for the Kolmogorov--Petrovskii--Piscounov (KPP) type equation with a discontinuous cut-off in the reaction function at concentration $u=u_c$. For fixed cut-off value $u_c \in (0,1)$, we apply the method of matched asymptotic coordinate expansions to obtain the complete large-time asymptotic form of the solution which exhibits the formation of a permanent form travelling wave structure. In particular, this approach allows the correction to the wave speed and the rate of convergence of the solution onto the perman…
This paper is concerned with the existence and the stability of travelling wave solutions to a bistable reaction-diffusion equation with a jump discontinuious point on nonlinear term. Sub-super solution method is used throughout this paper. As a matter of fact, this nonlinear discontinuity term is frequently emerging when study the travelling wave solution of reaction-diffusion-ODE systems. Hence, it is meaningful to consider this kind of problem.
We consider a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equation of Fisher-Kolmogoroff-Petrovsky-Piscounoff type. We investigate the effect of the interaction between the nonlinear diffusion coefficient and the reaction term on the existence and nonexistence of travelling waves. Our diffusion coefficient is allowed to be degenerate or singular at both equilibrium points, 0 and 1, while the reaction term need not be differentiable. These facts influence the existence and qualitative properties of travelling waves in a substantial way.
We use a geometric approach to prove the existence of smooth travelling wave solutions of a nonlinear diffusion-reaction equation with logistic kinetics and a convex nonlinear diffusivity function which changes sign twice in our domain of interest. We determine the minimum wave speed, c*, and investigate its relation to the spectral stability of the travelling wave solutions.
The paper is devoted to a reaction-diffusion equation with delay arising in modelling the immune response. We prove the existence of travelling waves in the bistable case using the Leray-Schauder method. In difference with the previous works, we do not assume here quasi-monotonicity of the delayed reaction term.
We prove existence and uniqueness of travelling waves for a reaction-diffusion system coupling a classical reaction-diffusion equation in a strip with a diffusion equation on a line. To do this we use a continuation method which leads to further insight into the system. In particular, the transition occurs through a singular perturbation which seems new in this context, connecting the system with a Wentzell type boundary value problem.
We are concerned with travelling wave solutions arising in a reaction diffusion equation with bistable and nonlocal nonlinearity, for which the comparison principle does not hold. Stability of the equilibrium $u\equiv 1$ is not assumed. We construct a travelling wave solution connecting 0 to an unknown steady state, which is "above and away", from the intermediate equilibrium. For focusing kernels we prove that, as expected, the wave connects 0 to 1. Our results also apply readily to the nonlocal ignition case.
We consider a nonlocal reaction-diffusion equation as a model for a population structured by a space variable and a phenotypical trait. To sustain the possibility of invasion in the case where an underlying principal eigenvalue is negative, we investigate the existence of travelling wave solutions. We identify a minimal speed $c^*>0$, and prove the existence of waves when $c\geq c^*$ and the non existence when $0\leq c
In this paper we establish the meta-stability of travelling waves for a class of reaction-diffusion equations forced by a multiplicative noise term. In particular, we show that the phase-tracking technique developed in [hamster2017,hamster2020] can be maintained over timescales that are exponentially long with respect to the noise intensity. This is achieved by combining the generic chaining principle with a mild version of the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequality to establish logarithmic supremum bounds for stochastic convolutions in the critical regularity regime.
We consider reaction-diffusion equations that are stochastically forced by a small multiplicative noise term. We show that spectrally stable travelling wave solutions to the deterministic system retain their orbital stability if the amplitude of the noise is sufficiently small. By applying a stochastic phase-shift together with a time-transform, we obtain a semilinear sPDE that describes the fluctuations from the primary wave. We subsequently develop a semigroup approach to handle the nonlinear stability question in a fashion that is closely related to modern deterministic methods.
In this paper, we study the existence and stability of travelling wave solutions of a kinetic reaction-transport equation. The model describes particles moving according to a velocity-jump process, and proliferating thanks to a reaction term of monostable type. The boundedness of the velocity set appears to be a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of positive travelling waves. The minimal speed of propagation of waves is obtained from an explicit dispersion relation. We construct the waves using a technique of sub- and supersolutions and prove their \eb{weak} stability in a we…
We consider reaction-diffusion equations of porous medium type, with different kind of reaction terms, and nonnegative bounded initial data. For all the reaction terms under consideration there are initial data for which the solution converges to 1 uniformly in compact sets for large times. We will characterize for which reaction terms this happens for all nontrivial nonnegative initial data, and for which ones there are also solutions converging uniformly to 0. Problems in this family have a unique (up to translations) travelling wave with a finite front and we will see how its speed gives th…
We investigate the connection between the existence of an explicit travelling wave solution and the travelling wave with minimal speed in a scalar monostable reaction-diffusion equation.
Inspired by applications, we consider reaction-diffusion equations on $\mathbb{R}$ that are stochastically forced by a small multiplicative noise term that is white in time, coloured in space and invariant under translations. We show how these equations can be understood as a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) forced by a cylindrical Q-Wiener process and subsequently explain how to study stochastic travelling waves in this setting. In particular, we generalize the phase tracking framework that was developed in [Hamster & Hupkes 2017] and [Hamster & Hupkes 2018] for noise processes…
We consider Kolmogorov--Petrovskii--Piscounov (KPP) type models in the presence of a discontinuous cut-off in reaction rate at concentration $u=u_c$. In Part I we examine permanent form travelling wave solutions (a companion paper, Part II, is devoted to their evolution in the large time limit). For each fixed cut-off value $0<u_c<1$, we prove the existence of a unique permanent form travelling wave with a continuous and monotone decreasing propagation speed $v^*(u_c)$. We extend previous asymptotic results in the limit of small $u_c$ and present new asymptotic results in the limit of large $u…
We consider positive travelling fronts of the time-delayed reaction-diffusion equation with the monostable birth function. Our main result says that for every fixed and sufficiently large velocity c, the positive travelling front is unique (modulo translations). To prove the uniqueness, we introduce a small parameter 1/c and realize the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction in a scale of Banach spaces.
We consider the equation $u_t=u_{xx}+b(x)u(1-u),$ $x\in\mathbb R,$ where $b(x)$ is a nonnegative measure on $\mathbb R$ that is periodic in $x.$ In the case where $b(x)$ is a smooth periodic function, it is known that there exists a travelling wave with speed $c$ for any $c\geq c^*(b),$ where $c^*(b)$ is a certain positive number depending on $b.$ Such a travelling wave is often called a \lq\lq pulsating travelling wave" or a \lq\lq periodic travelling wave", and $c^*(b)$ is called the \lq\lq minimal speed". In this paper, we first extend this theory by showing the existence of the minimal spe…
We consider a reaction-diffusion equation with a convection term in one space variable, where the diffusion changes sign from the positive to the negative and the reaction term is bistable. We study the existence of wavefront solutions, their uniqueness and regularity. The presence of convection reveals several new features of wavefronts: according to the mutual positions of the diffusivity and reaction, profiles can occur either for a single value of the speed or for a bounded interval of such values; uniqueness (up to shifts) is lost; moreover, plateaus of arbitrary length can appear; profil…
We extend the result on the stability of travelling waves for stochastic Nagumo equations in [St] to general bistable reaction-diffusion equations with both additive and multiplicative noise, using a variational approach based on functional inequalities. Our analysis yields explicit estimates on the rate of stability that can be shown in special examples to be optimal. We consider the semi linear Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piscounov equation for the advance of an advantageous gene in biology. Its non-smooth reaction function $f(u)$ allows for the introduction of travelling waves with a new profile. We study existence, uniqueness, and long-time asymptotic behavior of the solutions $u(x,t)$, $(x,t)\in \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}_+$. We prove also the existence and uniqueness (up to a spatial shift) of a travelling wave $U$. Our main result is the uniform convergence (for $x\in \mathbb{R}$) of every solution $u(x,t)$ of the Cauchy problem to a single traveling…
We study a family of reaction-diffusion equations that present a doubly nonlinear character given by a combination of the $p$-Laplacian and the porous medium operators. We consider the so-called slow diffusion regime, corresponding to a degenerate behaviour at the level 0, \normalcolor in which nonnegative solutions with compactly supported initial data have a compact support for any later time. For some results we will also require $p\ge2$ to avoid the possibility of a singular behaviour away from 0. Problems in this family have a unique (up to translations) travelling wave with a finite fron…
We investigate blow-up phenomena for positive solutions of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations including a nonlinear convection term $\partial_t u = Δu - g(u) \cdot \nabla u + f(u)$ in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$ under the dissipative dynamical boundary conditions $σ\partial_t u + \partial_νu =0$. Some conditions on $g$ and $f$ are discussed to state if the positive solutions blow up in finite time or not. Moreover, for certain classes of nonlinearities, an upper-bound for the blow-up time can be derived and the blow-up rate can be determinated.
This paper is concerned with quasilinear parabolic reaction-diffusion-advection systems on extended domains. Frameworks for well-posedness in Hilbert spaces and spaces of continuous functions are presented, based on known results using maximal regularity. It is shown that spectra of travelling waves on the line are meaningfully given by the familiar tools for semilinear equations, such as dispersion relations, and basic connections of spectra to stability and instability are considered. In particular, a principle of linearized orbital instability for manifolds of equilibria is proven. Our goal…
We give a variational proof of global stability for bistable travelling waves of scalar reaction-diffusion equations on the real line. In particular, we recover some of the classical results by P. Fife and J.B. McLeod without any use of the maximum principle. The method that is illustrated here in the simplest possible setting has been successfully applied to more general parabolic or hyperbolic gradient-like systems.
In this article, we are interested in a non-monotone system of logistic reaction-diffusion equations. This system of equations models an epidemics where two types of pathogens are competing, and a mutation can change one type into the other with a certain rate. We show the existence of minimal speed travelling waves, that are usually non monotonic. We then provide a description of the shape of those constructed travelling waves, and relate them to some Fisher-KPP fronts with non-minimal speed.
We consider in this paper a diffusion-convection reaction equation in one space dimension. The main assumptions are about the reaction term, which is monostable, and the diffusivity, which changes sign once or twice; then, we deal with a forward-backward parabolic equation. Our main results concern the existence of globally defined traveling waves, which connect two equilibria and cross both regions where the diffusivity is positive and regions where it is negative. We also investigate the monotony of the profiles and show the appearance of sharp behaviours at the points where the diffusivity …
We study the global stability issue of the reaction-convection-diffusion cholera epidemic PDE model and show that the basic reproduction number serves as a threshold parameter that predicts whether cholera will persist or become globally extinct. Specifically, when the basic reproduction number is beneath one, we show that the disease-free-equilibrium is globally attractive. On the other hand, when the basic reproduction number exceeds one, if the infectious hosts or the concentration of bacteria in the contaminated water are not initially identically zero, we prove the uniform persistence res…
This work investigates how we can extend the invariant subspace method to two-dimensional time-fractional non-linear PDEs. More precisely, the systematic study has been provided for constructing the various dimensions of the invariant subspaces for the two-dimensional time-fractional generalized convection-reaction-diffusion-wave equation along with the initial conditions for the first time. Additionally, the special types of the above-mentioned equation are discussed through this method separately such as reaction-diffusion-wave equation, convection-diffusion-wave equation and diffusion-wave …
This paper is concerned with some nonlinear propagation phenomena for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with Kolmogrov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type nonlinearities in general periodic domains or in infinite cylinders with oscillating boundaries. Having a variational formula for the minimal speed of propagation involving eigenvalue problems ( proved in Berestycki, Hamel and Nadirashvili \cite{BHN1}), we consider the minimal speed of propagation as a function of diffusion factors, reaction factors and periodicity parameters. There we study the limits, the asymptotic behaviors and the variat…
We consider a family of singular Volterra integral equations that appear in the study of monotone travelling-wave solutions for a family of diffusion-convection-reaction equations involving the $p$-Laplacian operator. Our results extend the ones due to B.\,Gilding for the case $p=2$. The fact that $p\neq2$ modifies the nature of the singularity in the integral equation, and introduces the need to develop some new tools for the analysis. The results for the integral equation are then used to study the existence and properties of travelling-wave solutions for doubly nonlinear diffusion-reaction …
We study the velocity of travelling waves of a reaction-diffusion system coupling a standard reaction-diffusion equation in a strip with a one-dimensional diffusion equation on a line. We show that it grows like the square root of the diffusivity on the line. This generalises a result of Berestycki, Roquejoffre and Rossi in the context of Fisher-KPP propagation where the question could be reduced to algebraic computations. Thus, our work shows that this phenomenon is a robust one. The ratio between the asymptotic velocity and the square root of the diffusivity on the line is characterised as t…
We consider a scalar parabolic equation in one spatial dimension. The equation is constituted by a convective term, a reaction term with one or two equilibria, and a positive diffusivity which can however vanish. We prove the existence and several properties of traveling-wave solutions to such an equation. In particular, we provide a sharp estimate for the minimal speed of the profiles and improve previous results about the regularity of wavefronts. Moreover, we show the existence of an infinite number of semi-wavefronts with the same speed.
We consider in this paper a reaction-diffusion system in presence of a flow and under a KPP hypothesis. While the case of a single-equation has been extensively studied since the pioneering Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piskunov paper, the study of the corresponding system with a Lewis number not equal to 1 is still quite open. Here, we will prove some results about the existence of travelling fronts and generalized travelling fronts solutions of such a system with the presence of a non-linear spacedependent loss term inside the domain. In particular, we will point out the existence of a minimal speed,…
We study existence and uniqueness of travelling fronts, and asymptotic speed of propagation for a non local reaction diffusion equation with spatial and genetic trait structure.
Reaction-diffusion equations appear in biology and chemistry, and combine linear diffusion with different kind of reaction terms. Some of them are remarkable from the mathematical point of view, since they admit families of travelling waves that describe the asymptotic behaviour of a larger class of solutions $0\leq u(x,t)\leq 1$ of the problem posed in the real line. We investigate here the existence of waves with constant propagation speed, when the linear diffusion is replaced by the "slow" doubly nonlinear diffusion. In the present setting we consider bistable reaction terms, which present…
We study the existence and properties of Lipschitz continuous weak solutions to the Neumann boundary value problem for a class of one-dimensional quasilinear forward-backward diffusion equations with linear convection and reaction. The diffusion flux function is assumed to be of a forward-backward type that contains two forward-diffusion phases. We prove that, for all smooth initial data, there exists at least one weak solution whose spatial derivative stays in the two forward phases. Also, for all smooth initial data that have a derivative value lying in a certain phase transition range, we s…
We study a reaction-diffusion-convection problem with nonlinear drift posed in a domain with periodically arranged obstacles. The non-linearity in the drift is linked to the hydrodynamic limit of a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) governing a population of interacting particles crossing a domain with obstacle. Because of the imposed large drift scaling, this nonlinearity is expected to explode in the limit of a vanishing scaling parameter. As main working techniques, we employ two-scale formal homogenization asymptotics with drift to derive the corresponding upscaled model e…
We study in this paper the periodic homogenization problem related to a strongly nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation. Owing to the large reaction term, the homogenized equation has a rather quite different form which puts together both the reaction and convection effects. We show in a special case that, the homogenized equation is exactly of a convection-diffusion type. The study relies on a suitable version of the well-known two-scale convergence method.
We study travelling-wave solutions for a reaction-diffusion system arising as a model for host-tissue degradation by bacteria. This system consists of a parabolic equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation. For large values of the `degradation-rate parameter' solutions are well approximated by solutions of a Stefan-like free boundary problem, for which travelling-wave solutions can be found explicitly. Our aim is to prove the existence of travelling waves for all sufficiently large wave-speeds for the original reaction-diffusion system and to determine the minimal speed. We prove …
We develop a new homological invariant for the dynamics of the bounded solutions to the travelling wave PDE \[ \left\{ \begin{array}{l l} \partial_t^2 u - c \partial_t u + Δu + f(x,u) = 0 \qquad & t \in \mathbf{R},\; x \in Ω, \newline B(u) = 0 & t \in \mathbf{R},\; x \in \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \] where $c \neq 0$, $Ω\subset \mathbf{R}^d$ is a bounded domain, $Δ$ is the Laplacian on $Ω$, and $B$ denotes Dirichlet, Neumann, or periodic boundary data. Restrictions on the nonlinearity $f$ are kept to a minimum, for instance, any nonlinearity exhibiting polynomial growth in $u$ can be cons…
We investigate numerically a model consisting in a kinetic equation for the biased motion of bacteria following a run-and-tumble process, coupled with two reaction-diffusion equations for chemical signals. This model exhibits asymptotic propagation at a constant speed. In particular, it admits travelling wave solutions. To capture this propagation, we propose a well-balanced numerical scheme based on Case's elementary solutions for the kinetic equation, and L-splines for the parabolic equations. We use this scheme to explore the Cauchy problem for various parameters. Some examples far from the…
We study linear stability of planar travelling waves for a scalar reaction-diffusion equation with non-linear anisotropic diffusion. The mathematical model is derived from the full thermo-hydrodynamical model describing the process of Inertial Confinement Fusion. We show that solutions of the Cauchy problem with physically relevant initial data become planar exponentially fast with rate $s(\eps',k)>0$, where $\eps'=\frac{T_{min}}{T_{max}}\ll 1$ is a small temperature ratio and $k\gg 1$ the transversal wrinkling wavenumber of perturbations. We rigorously recover in some particular limit $(\eps'…
In this paper, we study propagation in a nonlocal reaction-diffusion-mutation model describing the invasion of cane toads in Australia. The population of toads is structured by a space variable and a phenotypical trait and the space-diffusivity depends on the trait. We use a Schauder topological degree argument for the construction of some travelling wave solutions of the model. The speed $c^*$ of the wave is obtained after solving a suitable spectral problem in the trait variable. An eigenvector arising from this eigenvalue problem gives the flavor of the profile at the edge of the front. The…
We consider a bistable ($0\textless{}θ\textless{}1$ being the three constant steady states) delayed reaction diffusion equation, which serves as a model in population dynamics. The problem does not admit any comparison principle. This prevents the use of classical technics and, as a consequence, it is far from obvious to understand the behaviour of a possible travelling wave in $+\infty$. Combining refined {\it a priori} estimates and a Leray Schauder topological degree argument, we construct a travelling wave connecting 0 in $-\infty$ to \lq\lq something" which is strictly above the unstable …
We study a one dimensional metastable dynamics of internal interfaces for the initial boundary value problem for the following convection-reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} \partial_t u = \varepsilon \partial_x^2 u -\partial_x f(u)+ f'(u). \end{equation*} A metastable behavior appears when the time-dependent solution develops into a layered function in a relatively short time, and subsequent approaches its steady state in a very long time interval. A rigorous analysis is used to study such behavior, by means of the construction of a one-parameter family $\{ U^\varepsilon(x;ξ)\}_ξ$ o…
We investigate in this paper a scalar reaction diffusion equation with a nonlinear reaction term depending on x-ct. Here, c is a prescribed parameter modelling the speed of climate change and we wonder whether a population will survive or not, that is, we want to determine the large-time behaviour of the associated solution. This problem has been solved recently when the nonlinearity is of KPP type. We consider in the present paper general reaction terms, that are only assumed to be negative at infinity. Using a variational approach, we construct two thresholds determining the existence and th…
