We study the spectral stability of travelling and stationary front and pulse solutions in a class of degenerate reaction-diffusion systems. We characterise the essential spectrum of the linearised operator in full generality and identify conditions under which it lies entirely in the left-half plane. For a number of special cases we obtain analytical results, including explicit Evans functions, and complete spectral descriptions for certain stationary waves. In regimes where analytical methods are not available, we compute the point spectrum numerically using a Riccati-Evans function approach. Our results show that stable travelling fronts can occur, while travelling pulses are typically unstable.
We study a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with cubic interactions in one space dimension. The orbital stability and instability of semitrivial standing wave solutions are studied for both non-degenerate and degenerate cases.
In this work we study global well-posedness and large time behaviour for a typical reaction--diffusion system, which include degenerate diffusion, and whose non-linearities arise from chemical reactions. We show that there is an {\it indirect diffusion effect}, i.e. an effective diffusion for the non-diffusive species which is incurred by a combination of diffusion from diffusive species and reversible reactions between the species. Deriving new estimates for such degenerate reaction-diffusion system, we show, by applying the entropy method, that the solution converges exponentially to equilib…
In this paper we study the local instability to the boundary equilibria and the local stability to the positive equilibria for some chemical reaction-diffusion systems. We first analyze a three-species system with boundary equilibria in some stoichiometric classes. Then We prove the convergence to the positive equilibria for a general reversible reaction-diffusion network as long as the initial data is closed enough to the the positive equilibria.
We consider a system of two reaction-diffusion equations coming out of reversible chemistry. When the reaction happens on the totality of the domain, it is known that exponential convergence to equilibrium holds. We show in this paper that this exponential convergence also holds when the reaction holds only on a given open set of a ball, thanks to an observation estimate deduced by logarithmic convexity.
A reaction-diffusion system exhibiting Turing's diffusion driven instability is considered. The equation for an activator is supplemented by unilateral terms of the type $s_{-}(x)u^{-}$, $s_{+}(x)u^{+}$ describing sources and sinks active only if the concentration decreases below and increases above, respectively, the value of the basic spatially constant solution which is shifted to zero. We show that the domain of diffusion parameters in which spatially non-homogeneous stationary solutions can bifurcate from that constant solution is smaller than in the classical case without unilateral term…
We prove that the famous diffusive Brusselator model can support more complicated spatial-temporal wave structure than the usual temporal-oscillation from a standard Hopf bifurcation. In our investigation, we discover that the diffusion term in the model is neither a usual parabolic stabilizer nor a destabilizer as in the Turing instability of uniform state, but rather plays the role of maintaining an equivariant Hopf bifurcation spectral mechanism. At the same time, we show that such a mechanism can occur around any nonzero wave number and this finding is also different from the former works …
We consider in this paper a diffusion-convection reaction equation in one space dimension. The main assumptions are about the reaction term, which is monostable, and the diffusivity, which changes sign once or twice; then, we deal with a forward-backward parabolic equation. Our main results concern the existence of globally defined traveling waves, which connect two equilibria and cross both regions where the diffusivity is positive and regions where it is negative. We also investigate the monotony of the profiles and show the appearance of sharp behaviours at the points where the diffusivity …
This paper establishes the spectral stability in exponentially weighted spaces of smooth traveling monotone fronts for reaction diffusion equations of Fisher-KPP type with nonlinear degenerate diffusion coefficient. It is assumed that the former is degenerate, that is, it vanishes at zero, which is one of the equilibrium points of the reaction. A parabolic regularization technique is introduced in order to locate a subset of the compression spectrum of the linearized operator around the wave, whereas the point spectrum is proved to be stable with the use of energy estimates. Detailed asymptoti…
The modelling of linear and nonlinear reaction-subdiffusion processes is more subtle than normal diffusion and causes different phenomena. The resulting equations feature a spatial Laplacian with a temporal memory term through a time fractional derivative. It is known that the precise form depends on the interaction of dispersal and reaction, and leads to qualitative differences. We refine these results by defining generalised spectra through dispersion relations, which allows us to examine the onset of instability and in particular inspect Turing type instabilities. These results are numerica…
The propagation of unstable interfaces is at the origin of remarkable patterns that are observed in various areas of science as chemical reactions, phase transitions, growth of bacterial colonies. Since a scalar equation generates usually stable waves, the simplest mathematical description relies on two by two reaction-diffusion systems. Our interest is the extension of the Fisher/KPP equation to a two species reaction which represents reactant concentration and temperature when used for flame propagation, bacterial population and nutrient concentration when used in biology. We study in which …
A general system of several ordinary differential equations coupled with a reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded domain with zero-flux boundary condition is studied in the context of pattern formation. These initial-boundary value problems may have regular (i.e. sufficiently smooth) stationary solutions. This class of {\it close-to-equilibrium} patterns includes stationary solutions that emerge due to the Turing instability of a spatially constant stationary solution. The main result of this work is instability of all regular patterns. It suggests that stable stationary solutions arising in…
We consider the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation with derivative: \begin{equation} iu_t =-u_{xx} -i |u|^{2}u_x -b|u|^4u , \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}, \ b \in\mathbb{R}. \end{equation} If $b=0$, this equation is a gauge equivalent form of the well-known derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation. The soliton profile of DNLS satisfies a certain double power elliptic equation with cubic-quintic nonlinearities. The quintic nonlinearity in our equation only affects the coefficient in front of the quintic term in the elliptic equation, so in this sense the additional no…
In this paper we are interested in a degenerate parabolic system of reaction-diffusion equations arising in biology when studying cell adhesion at the protein level. In this modeling the unknown is the couple of the distribution laws of the freely diffusing proteins and of the fixed ones. Under sufficient conditions on the aggregation and unbinding probabilities, we prove the existence of solution of the considered system, as well as their positivity, boundedness and uniqueness. Moreover, we discuss the stability of the equilibrium solution. Finally, we show that the simpler and particular cho…
The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the pattern formation phenomenon in reaction-diffusion equations coupled with ordinary differential equations. Such systems of equations arise, for example, from modeling of interactions between cellular processes such as cell growth, differentiation or transformation and diffusing signaling factors. We focus on stability analysis of solutions of a prototype model consisting of a single reaction-diffusion equation coupled to an ordinary differential equation. We show that such systems are very different from classical reaction-diff…
We consider a scalar parabolic equation in one spatial dimension. The equation is constituted by a convective term, a reaction term with one or two equilibria, and a positive diffusivity which can however vanish. We prove the existence and several properties of traveling-wave solutions to such an equation. In particular, we provide a sharp estimate for the minimal speed of the profiles and improve previous results about the regularity of wavefronts. Moreover, we show the existence of an infinite number of semi-wavefronts with the same speed.
This paper presents a full classification of the short-time behavior of the interfaces in the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear second order degenerate parabolic PDE \[ u_t-Δu^m +b u^β=0, \ x\in \mathbb{R}^N, 0<t<T \] with nonnegative initial function $u_0$ such that \[ supp~u_0 = \{|x|<R\}, \ u_0 \sim C(R-|x|)^α, \quad{as} \ |x|\to R-0, \] where $m>1, C,α, β>0, b \in \mathbb{R}$. Interface surface $t=η(x)$ may shrink, expand or remain stationary depending on the relative strength of the diffusion and reaction terms near the boundary of support, expressed in terms of the parameters $m,β, α, sig…

We explore a mechanism of pattern formation arising in processes described by a system of a single reaction-diffusion equation coupled with ordinary differential equations. Such systems of equations arise from the modeling of interactions between cellular processes and diffusing growth factors. We focused on the model of early carcinogenesis proposed by Marciniak-Czochra and Kimmel, which is an example of a wider class of pattern formation models with an autocatalytic non-diffusing component. We present a numerical study showing emergence of periodic and irregular spike patterns due to diffusi…
We derive a precise motion law for fronts of solutions to scalar one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with equal depth multiple-wells, in the case the second derivative of the potential vanishes at its minimizers. We show that, renormalizing time in an algebraic way, the motion of fronts is governed by a simple system of ordinary differential equations of nearest neighbor interaction type. These interactions may be either attractive or repulsive. Our results are not constrained by the possible occurrence of collisions nor splittings. They present substantial differences with the result…
We consider the singular perturbation problem $$ Δu_ε=β_ε(u_ε), $$ where $β_ε(s)=\frac{1}εβ(\frac{s}ε)$, $β$ is a Lipschitz continuous function such that $β>0$ in $(0, 1)$, $β\equiv 0$ outside $(0, 1)$ and $\int_0^1β(s) ds={1/2}$. We construct an example exhibiting a {\em degenerate singularity} as $ε_k\searrow 0$. More precisely, there is a sequence of solutions $u_{ε_k}\to u$ as $k\to \infty$, and there exists $x^0\in\partial\{u>0\}$ such that $$ \frac{u(x^0+r\cdot)}{r} \to 0 \textrm{as} r\to 0.$$ Known results suggest that this singularity must be {\em unstable}, which makes it hard to capt…
This paper is concerned with quasilinear parabolic reaction-diffusion-advection systems on extended domains. Frameworks for well-posedness in Hilbert spaces and spaces of continuous functions are presented, based on known results using maximal regularity. It is shown that spectra of travelling waves on the line are meaningfully given by the familiar tools for semilinear equations, such as dispersion relations, and basic connections of spectra to stability and instability are considered. In particular, a principle of linearized orbital instability for manifolds of equilibria is proven. Our goal…
We show that the elliptic problem $Δu+f(u)=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 1$, with $f\in C^1(\mathbb{R})$ and $f(0)=0$ does not have nontrivial stable solutions that decay to zero at infinity, provided that $f$ is nonincreasing near the origin. As a corollary, we can show that any two nontrivial solutions that decay to zero at infinity must intersect each other, provided that at least one of them is signchanging. This property was previously known only in the case where both solutions are positive with a different approach. We also discuss implications of our main result on the existence of mono…
In this paper, we investigate the expanding patterns and spreading speed of solutions of farmer and hunter-gatherer model which is a three-component degenerate reaction-diffusion system. Ecologically speaking, since the lifestyle of agriculture and settlement allows for a larger population, after an initially localized population of farmers migrated into a region occupied by hunter-gatherers, the Neolithic transition from hunter-gatherers to farmers happened. This model was proposed by J. Elias, K. Humayun and M. Mimura in 2018. By numerical simulations, a travelling wave solution with a certa…

We consider a degenerate partial differential equation arising in population dynamics, namely the porous medium equation with a bistable reaction term. We study its asymptotic behavior as a small parameter, related to the thickness of a diffuse interface, tends to zero. We prove the rapid formation of transition layers which then propagate. We prove the convergence to a sharp interface limit whose normal velocity, at each point, is that of the underlying degenerate travelling wave.
Let us consider a nonlinear degenerate reaction-diffusion equation with application to climate science. After proving that the solution remains nonnegative at any time, when the initial state is nonnegative, we prove the approximate controllability between nonnegative states at any time via multiplicative controls, that is, using as control the reaction coefficient.
In this paper, we study a strongly coupled two-prey one-predator system. We first prove the unique positive equilibrium solution is globally asymptotically stable for the corresponding kinetic system (the system without diffusion) and remains locally linearly stable for the reaction-diffusion system without cross-diffusion, hence it does not belong to the classical Turing instability scheme. Moreover we prove that the positive equilibrium solution is globally asymptotically stable for the reaction-diffusion system without cross-diffusion. But it becomes linear unstable only when cross-diffusio…
We study the orbital instability of solitary waves for a generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We give sufficient conditions for instability of a two-parameter family of solitary waves in a degenerate case.
We consider a Hamiltonian systems which is invariant under a one-parameter unitary group. We give a criterion for the stability and instability of bound states for the degenerate case. We apply our theorem to the single power nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation and the double power nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
We show interior Hölder continuity for a class of quasi-linear degenerate reaction-diffusion equations. The diffusion coefficient in the equation has a porous medium type degeneracy and its primitive has a singularity. The reaction term is locally bounded except in zero. The class of equations we analyse is motivated by a model that describes the growth of biofilms. Our method is based on the original proof of interior Hölder continuity for the porous medium equation. We do not restrict ourselves to solutions that are limits in the weak topology of a sequence of approximate continuous solution…

This paper is devoted to the analysis of non-negative solutions for a generalisation of the parabolic equation with porous medium like nonlinear diffusion and nonlinear nonlocal reaction. We investigate under which conditions equilibration between two competing effects, repulsion modelled by nonlinear diffusion and aggregation modelled by nonlinear reaction, occurs. Precisely, we exhibit that the qualitative behavior of solutions is decided by the nonlinear diffusion which is chosen in such a way that its scaling and the reaction term coincide, i.e. that there is a critical exponent $m+2/n$ fo…
We prove existence, uniqueness, regularity and separation properties for a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with a reaction term. We deal here with the case of logarithmic potential and degenerate mobility as well an uniformly lipschitz in $u$ reaction term $g(x,t,u).$
We consider in this paper a microscopic model (that is, a system of three reaction-diffusion equations) incorporating the dynamics of handling and searching predators, and show that its solutions converge when a small parameter tends to $0$ towards the solutions of a reaction-cross diffusion system of predator-prey type involving a Holling-type II or Beddington-DeAngelis functional response. We also provide a study of the Turing instability domain of the obtained equations and (in the case of the Beddington-DeAngelis functional response) compare it to the same instability domain when the cross…

For first-order quasi-linear systems of partial differential equations, we formulate an assumption of a transition from initial hyperbolicity to ellipticity. This assumption bears on the principal symbol of the first-order operator. Under such an assumption, we prove a strong Hadamard instability for the associated Cauchy problem, namely an instantaneous defect of Hölder continuity of the flow from $G^σ$ to $L^2$, with $0 < σ< σ_0$, the limiting Gevrey index $σ_0$ depending on the nature of the transition. We restrict here to scalar transitions, and non-scalar transitions in which the boundary…
In this paper we study the global approximate multiplicative controllability for nonlinear degenerate parabolic Cauchy problems. In particular, we consider a one-dimensional semilinear degenerate reaction-diffusion equation in divergence form governed via the coefficient of the \-reaction term (bilinear or multiplicative control). The above one-dimensional equation is degenerate since the diffusion coefficient is positive on the interior of the spatial domain and vanishes at the boundary points. Furthermore, two different kinds of degenerate diffusion coefficient are distinguished and studied …
Coupling a reaction-diffusion equation with ordinary differential equations (ODE) may lead to diffusion-driven instability (DDI) which, in contrast to the classical reaction-diffusion models, causes destabilization of both, constant solutions and Turing patterns. Using a shadow-type limit of a reaction-diffusion-ODE model, we show that in such cases the instability driven by nonlocal terms (a counterpart of DDI) may lead to formation of unbounded spike patterns.
