We consider the subsonic moving point source problem for the scalar wave equation in $\pmb{R}^3$, proving a regularity result for the direct problem, and uniqueness and stability results for the inverse problem. We then present and investigate numerically a Bayesian framework for the inference of the source trajectory and intensity from wave field measurements. The framework employs Gaussian process priors, the pre-conditioned Crank-Nicholson scheme with Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling, and conditioning on functionals to include prior information on the source trajectory.
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system on time-dependent domains with prescribed motion of the boundary. For both the no-slip boundary conditions as well as slip boundary conditions we prove local-in-time existence of strong solutions. These results are obtained using a transformation of the problem to a fixed domain and an existence theorem for Navier-Stokes like systems with lower order terms and perturbed boundary conditions. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness principle for slip boundary conditions which remained so far open question.
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for the heat equation with a nonsmooth coefficient of conductivity which models the displacement of a moving body inside a nonhomogeneous background. We prove the uniqueness of the moving inclusion from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator by using a dynamical probe method.
Nonlocal cross-diffusion systems on the torus, arising in population dynamics and neuroscience, are analyzed. The global existence of weak solutions, the weak-strong uniqueness, and the localization limit are proved. The kernels are assumed to be positive definite and in detailed balance. The proofs are based on entropy estimates coming from Shannon-type and Rao-type entropies, while the weak-strong uniqueness result follows from the relative entropy method. The existence and uniqueness theorems hold for nondifferentiable kernels. The associated local cross-diffusion system, derived in the loc…
We show existence and uniqueness of regular time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, that moves by arbitrary (sufficiently smooth) time-periodic translational motion of the same period, provided the size of the data is suitably restricted. Moreover, we characterize the spatial asymptotic behavior of such solutions and prove, in particular, that if $\mathscr B$ has a nonzero net motion identified by a constant velocity $\bar{\mathbfξ}$ (say), then the solution exhibit a wake-like behavior in the direction $-\bar{\mathbfξ}$ entirely anal…
We study the Cauchy problem for the quasi-geostrophic equations in a unit ball of the two dimensional space with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We show the existence, the uniqueness of the strong solution in the framework of Besov spaces. We establish a spectral localization technique and commutator estimates.
We show existence and uniqueness for small data of regular time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, that moves by time-periodic translational motion of the same period along a constant direction, $\bfe_1$, and spins with constant angular velocity $\bfomega$ parallel to $\bfe_1$. We also study the spatial asymptotic behavior of such solutions and show, in particular, that if $\mathscr B$ has a net motion characterized by a non-zero average translational velocity $\bar{\bfxi}$, then the solution exhibit a wake-like behavior in the direct…
We consider a coupled PDE-ODE system describing the motion of the rigid body in a container filled with the incompressible, viscous fluid. The fluid and the rigid body are coupled via Navier slip boundary condition. We prove that the local in time strong solution is unique in the larger class of weak solutions on the interval of its existence. This is the first weak-strong uniqueness result in the area of fluid-structure interaction with a moving boundary.
This paper is concerned with the inverse moving source problems for parabolic equations. Given the temporal function, we prove the uniqueness of the nonlinear inverse problem of determining the orbit function by final data measured in a bounded domain. On the other hand, given the orbit function we also show that the profile function can be uniquely determined by final data measured in a bounded domain away from the domain enclosing the moving orbit. The proofs adopt the Fourier approach and results from complex analysis.
We consider a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations describing the interaction between an isentropic inviscid fluid and a rigid body moving freely inside the fluid. We prove the existence of measure-valued solutions which is generated by the vanishing viscosity limit of incompressible fluid-rigid body interaction system under some physically constitutive relations. Moreover, we show that the measure-value solution coincides with strong solution on the interval of its existence. This relies on the weak-strong uniqueness analysis.
This paper is concerned with the inverse problem on determining an orbit of the moving source in a fractional diffusion(-wave) equations in a connected bounded domain of $\mathbb R^d$ or in the whole space $\mathbb R^d$. Based on a newly established fractional Duhamel's principle, we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate in the case of a localized moving source by the observation data at $d$ interior points. The uniqueness for the general non-localized moving source is verified with additional data of more interior observations.
This paper is concerned with the uniqueness on two inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics with partial boundary data. We show that (1) if the temporal source function is compactly supported, then the spatial source profile function or the orbit function can be uniquely determined by the tangential trace of the electric field measured on part of a sphere, (2) if the temporal function is given by a Dirac distribution, then the impulsive time point and the source location can be uniquely determined at four receivers on a sphere.
We study a 3D nonlinear moving boundary fluid-structure interaction problem describing the interaction of the fluid flow with a rigid body. The fluid flow is governed by 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while the motion of the rigid body is described by a system of ordinary differential equations called Euler equations for the rigid body. The equations are fully coupled via dynamical and kinematic coupling conditions. We consider two different kinds of kinematic coupling conditions: no-slip and slip. In both cases we prove a generalization of the well-known weak-strong uniqueness res…
We study the wave equation in an interval with two linearly moving endpoints. We give the exact solution by a series formula, then we show that the energy of the solution decay at the rate $1/t$. We also establish observability results, at one or two endpoints, in a sharp time. Moreover, using the Hilbert uniqueness method, we derive exact boundary controllability results.

This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form $f(x)g(t)$ and $f(x_1,x_2,t) h(x_3)$, where $g(t)$ and $h(x_3)$ are given and $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$ is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variabl…
This article is concerned with the derivation of numerical reconstruction schemes for the inverse moving source problem on determining source profiles in (time-fractional) evolution equations. As a continuation of the theoretical result on the uniqueness, we adopt a minimization procedure with regularization to construct iterative thresholding schemes for the reduced backward problems on recovering one or two unknown initial value(s). Moreover, an elliptic approach is proposed to solve a convection equation in the case of two profiles.
We study ground state solutions for linear and nonlinear elliptic PDEs in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with (pseudo-)differential operators of arbitrary order. We prove a general symmetry result in the nonlinear case as well as a uniqueness result for ground states in the linear case. In particular, we can deal with problems (e.\,g. higher order PDEs) that cannot be tackled by usual methods such as maximum principles, moving planes, or Polya--Szegö inequalities. Instead, we use arguments based on the Fourier transform and we apply a rigidity result for the Hardy-Littlewood majorant problem in $\mathbb{R}^n$…
