We show existence and uniqueness for small data of regular time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, that moves by time-periodic translational motion of the same period along a constant direction, $\bfe_1$, and spins with constant angular velocity $\bfomega$ parallel to $\bfe_1$. We also study the spatial asymptotic behavior of such solutions and show, in particular, that if $\mathscr B$ has a net motion characterized by a non-zero average translational velocity $\bar{\bfxi}$, then the solution exhibit a wake-like behavior in the direction $-\bar{\bfxi}$ entirely analogous to that of a steady-state flow around a body that moves with velocity $\bar{\bfxi}$ and angular velocity $\bfomega$.
We prove the existence of unique regular solutions of steady-state buoyancy-driven flows of viscous incompressible heat-conducting fluids in 3D open channels under mixed boundary conditions. The model takes into account the phenomena of the viscous energy dissipation.
We establish some conditional uniqueness of weak solutions to the viscous primitive equations, and as an application, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of weak solutions, with the initial data taken as small $L^\infty$ perturbations of functions in the space $X=\left\{v\in (L^6(Ω))^2|\partial_zv\in (L^2(Ω))^2\right\}$; in particular, the initial data are allowed to be discontinuous. Our result generalizes in a uniform way the result on the uniqueness of weak solutions with continuous initial data and that of the so-called $z$-weak solutions.
We consider the 3-D full Navier-Stokes equations whose the viscosity coefficients and the thermal conductivity coefficient depend on the density and the temperature. We prove the local existence and uniqueness of the strong solution in a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. The initial density may vanish in an open set and $Ω$ could be a bounded or unbounded domain. We also prove a blow-up criterion for the solution. Finally, we show the blow-up of the smooth solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\geq1$) when the initial density has compactly support and the initi…
We show existence and uniqueness of regular time-periodic solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem in the exterior of a rigid body, $\mathscr B$, that moves by arbitrary (sufficiently smooth) time-periodic translational motion of the same period, provided the size of the data is suitably restricted. Moreover, we characterize the spatial asymptotic behavior of such solutions and prove, in particular, that if $\mathscr B$ has a nonzero net motion identified by a constant velocity $\bar{\mathbfξ}$ (say), then the solution exhibit a wake-like behavior in the direction $-\bar{\mathbfξ}$ entirely anal…
We extend the weak-strong uniqueness principle to general models of compressible viscous fluids near/on the vacuum. In particular, the physically relevant case of positive density with polynomial decay at infinity is considered.
Following the recent papers [9] and [10] by T. Gallay and V. uSverák, in the line of work initiated by H. Feng and V. uSverák in their paper [3], we prove the uniqueness of a solution of the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations without swirl when the initial data is a positive linear combination of Dirac masses.
We consider the dyadic model with viscosity and additive Gaussian noise as a simplified version of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations, with the purpose of studying uniqueness and emergence of singularities. We prove path-wise uniqueness and absence of blow-up in the intermediate intensity of the non-linearity, morally corresponding to the 3D case, and blow-up for stronger intensity. Moreover, blow-up happens with probability one for regular initial data.
We study the Cauchy problem for the isentropic hypo-viscous compressible Navier-Stokes equations (CNS) under general pressure laws in all dimensions $d\geq 2$. For all hypo-viscosities $(-Δ)^α$ with $α\in (0,1)$, we prove that there exist infinitely many weak solutions with the same initial data. This provides the first non-uniqueness result of weak solutions to viscous compressible fluid. Our proof features new constructions of building blocks for both the density and momentum, which respect the compressible structure. It also applies to the compressible Euler equations and the hypo-viscous i…
The existence of weak solutions to the "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system with Navier slip-with-friction conditions in a 3D bounded domain has been recently proved by Gérard-Varet and Hillairet in \cite{exi:GeH}. In 2D for a fluid alone (without any rigid body) it is well-known since Leray that weak solutions are unique, continuous in time with $ L^{2} $ regularity in space and satisfy the energy equality. In this paper we prove that these properties also hold for the 2D "viscous incompressible fluid + rigid body" system.

We deal with initial-boundary value problems for systems of conservation laws in one space dimension and we focus on the boundary Riemann problem. It is known that, in general, different viscous approximations provide different limits. In this paper, we establish sufficient conditions to conclude that two different approximations lead to the same limit. As an application of this result, we show that, under reasonable assumptions, the self-similar second-order approximation and the classical viscous approximation provide the same limit. Our analysis applies to both the characteristic and the no…
We study well-posedness and asymptotic dynamics of a coupled system consisting of linearized 3D Navier--Stokes equations in a bounded domain and a classical (nonlinear) full von Karman shallow shell equations that accounts for both transversal and lateral displacements on a flexible part of the boundary. We also take into account rotational inertia of filaments of the shell. Out main result shows that the problem generates a semiflow in an appropriate phase space. The regularity provided by viscous dissipation in the fluid allows us to consider simultaneously both cases of presence inertia in …
We present two criteria to conclude that a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) posseses a unique maximal strong solution. This paper provides the full details of the abstract well-posedness results first given in arXiv:2202.09242v2, and partners a paper which rigorously addresses applications to the 3D SALT (Stochastic Advection by Lie Transport) Navier-Stokes Equation in velocity and vorticity form, on the torus and the bounded domain respectively. Each criterion has its corresponding set of assumptions and can be applied to viscous fluid equations with additive, multiplicative or…
In [Lacave, IHP, ana, to appear (2008)] the author considered the two dimensional Euler equations in the exterior of a thin obstacle shrinking to a curve and determined the limit velocity. In the present work, we consider the same problem in the viscous case, proving convergence to a solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a curve. The uniqueness of the limit solution is also shown.
We consider a class of stationary viscous Hamilton--Jacobi equations as $$ \left\{\begin{array}{l} \la u-{\rm div}(A(x) \nabla u)=H(x,\nabla u)\mbox{in }Ω, u=0{on}\partialΩ\end{array} \right. $$ where $\la\geq 0$, $A(x)$ is a bounded and uniformly elliptic matrix and $H(x,ξ)$ is convex in $ξ$ and grows at most like $|ξ|^q+f(x)$, with $1 < q < 2$ and $f \in \elle {\frac N{q'}}$. Under such growth conditions solutions are in general unbounded, and there is not uniqueness of usual weak solutions. We prove that uniqueness holds in the restricted class of solutions satisfying a suitable energy--typ…
We study an initial-boundary-value problem for time-dependent flows of heat-conducting viscous incompressible fluids in channel-like domains on a time interval $(0,T)$. For the parabolic system with strong nonlinearities and including the artificial (the so called "do nothing") boundary conditions, we prove the local in time existence, global uniqueness and smoothness of the solution on a time interval $(0,T^*)$, where $0< T^* \leq T$.
We consider the Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms describing the stationary flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around a rigid body moving at a constant velocity and rotating at a constant angular velocity. In a previous paper, we prove a representation formula for weak solutions of the system. Here the representation formula is used to get an asymptotic expansion of respectively velocity and its gradient, and to establish pointwise decay estimates of remainder terms. Our results are based on a fundamental solution proposed by Guenther and Thomann J. Math. Fluid Mech., 8 …

The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in R^3 are shown to admit a unique axisymmetric solution without swirl if the initial vorticity is a circular vortex filament with arbitrarily large circulation Reynolds number. The emphasis is on uniqueness, as existence has already been established in [10]. The main difficulty which has to be overcome is that the nonlinear regime for such flows is outside of applicability of standard perturbation theory, even for short times. The solutions we consider are archetypal examples of viscous vortex rings, and can be thought of as axisymmetric analogues of…
We prove the non-uniqueness of weak solutions to 3D hyper viscous and resistive MHD in the class $L^γ_tW^{s,p}_x$, where the exponents $(s,γ,p)$ lie in two supercritical regimes. The result reveals that the scaling-invariant Ladyženskaja-Prodi-Serrin (LPS) condition is the right criterion to detect non-uniqueness, even in the highly viscous and resistive regime beyond the Lions exponent. In particular, for the classical viscous and resistive MHD, the non-uniqueness is sharp near the endpoint $(0,2,\infty)$ of the LPS condition. Moreover, the constructed weak solutions admit the partial regular…
First, a new sufficient condition for uniqueness of weak solutions is proved for the system of 2D viscous Primitive Equations. Second, global existence and uniqueness are established for several classes of weak solutions with partial initial regularity, including but not limited to those weak solutions with initial horizontal regularity, rather than vertical regularity. Our results and analyses for the problem with phys- ical boundary conditions can be extended to those with other typical boundary conditions. Most of the results were not available before, even for the periodic case.
The Cauchy problem of a multi-dimensional ($d\geqslant 2$) compressible viscous liquid-gas two-phase flow model is concerned in this paper. We investigate the global existence and uniqueness of the strong solution for the initial data close to a stable equilibrium and the local in time existence and uniqueness of the solution with general initial data in the framework of Besov spaces. A continuation criterion is also obtained for the local solution.
We study the three dimensional active scalar equation called the magneto-geostropic equation which was proposed by Moffatt and Loper as a model for the geodynamo processes in the Earth's fluid core. When the viscosity of the fluid is positive, the constitutive law that relates the drift velocity $u(x,t)$ and the scalar temperature $θ(x,t)$ produces two orders of smoothing. We study the implications of this property. For example, we prove that in the case of the non-diffusive ($\varepsilon_κ=0$) active scalar equation, initial data $θ_0\in L^3$ implies the existence of unique, global weak solut…
We are concerned with the existence and uniqueness of solutions with only bounded density for the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Assuming that the initial velocity has slightly sub-critical regularity and that the initial density is a small perturbation (in the $L^\infty$ norm) of a positive constant, we prove the existence of local-in-time solutions. In the case where the density takes two constant values across a smooth interface (or, more generally, has striated regularity with respect to some nondegenerate family of vector-fields), we get uniqueness. This latter result su…
In this paper we prove the global existence and uniqueness (regularity) of strong solutions to the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations, which model large scale ocean and atmosphere dynamics.
We are interested in viscous scalar conservation laws with a white-in-time but spatially correlated stochastic forcing. The equation is assumed to be one-dimensional and periodic in the space variable, and its flux function to be locally Lipschitz continuous and have at most polynomial growth. Neither the flux nor the noise need to be non-degenerate. In a first part, we show the existence and uniqueness of a global solution in a strong sense. In a second part, we establish the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure for this strong solution.
Uniqueness of positive solutions to viscous Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations of the form $-Δu(x) + \frac{1}γ |D{u}(x)|^γ= f(x) - λ$, with $f$ a coercive function and $λ$ a constant, in the subquadratic case, that is, $γ\in(1,2)$, appears to be an open problem. Barles and Meireles [Comm. Partial Differential Equations 41 (2016)] show uniqueness in the case that $f(x) \approx |x|^β$ and $|D f(x)|\lessapprox |x|^{(β-1)_+}$ for some $β>0$, essentially matching earlier results of Ichihara, who considered more general Hamiltonians but with better regularity for $f$. Without enforcing this ass…
Lions (1959, Bull. Soc. Math. France, \textbf{87}, 245--273) introduced the Navier-Stokes equations with a viscous diffusion in the form of a fractional Laplacian; subsequently, he (1969, Dunod, Gauthiers-Villars, Paris) claimed the uniqueness of its solution when its exponent is not less than five quarters in case the spatial dimension is three. Following the work of Hofmanov$\acute{\mathrm{a}}$, Zhu and Zhu (2019, arXiv:1912.11841 [math.PR]), we prove the non-uniqueness in law for the three-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with the viscous diffusion in the form of a fractional …
We prove the existence and the uniqueness of strong solutions for the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi Equation with Neumann boundary condition and initial data a continious function. Then, we study the large time behavior of the solutions.
In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions for the 2D viscous shallow water equations with low regularity assumptions on the initial data as well as the initial height bounded away from zero.
We consider the equations which describe polytropic one-dimensional flows of viscous compressible multifluids. We prove global existence and uniqueness of a solution to the initial-boundary value problem which corresponds to the flow in a bounded space domain.
We study existence, uniqueness and regularity properties of classical solutions to viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations with Caputo time-fractional derivative. Our study relies on a combination of a gradient bound for the time-fractional Hamilton-Jacobi equation obtained via nonlinear adjoint method and sharp estimates in Sobolev and Hölder spaces for the corresponding linear problem.
This paper considers ground states of mass subcritical rotational nonlinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u+iΩ(x^\perp\cdot\nabla u)=μu+ρ^{p-1}|u|^{p-1}u \,\ \text{in} \,\ \mathbb{R}^2, \end{equation*} where $V(x)$ is an external potential, $Ω>0$ characterizes the rotational velocity of the trap $V(x)$, $1<p<3$ and $ρ>0$ describes the strength of the attractive interactions. It is shown that ground states of the above equation can be described equivalently by minimizers of the $L^2-$ constrained variational problem. We prove that minimizers exist for any $ρ\in(0,\infty)$ when …
We consider the equations of a multi-velocity model of a binary mixture of viscous compressible fluids (two-fluid medium) in the case of one-dimensional barotropic motions. We prove the global (in time) existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to the initial-boundary value problem describing the motion in a bounded spatial domain.
We consider the initial boundary value problem for a model system of one-dimensional equations which describe unsteady polytropic motions of a mixture of viscous compressible fluids. We prove the global existence and uniqueness theorem for the strong solution without restrictions on the structure of the viscosity matrix except standard properties of symmetry and positiveness.
In this paper, we consider the global existence and uniqueness of the classical solutions for the 3D viscous liquid-gas two-phase flow model. Initial data is only small in the energy-norm. Our main ideas come from [15] where the existence of global classical solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations was obtained by using the continuity methods under the assumption that the initial energy is sufficiently small.
In this paper, we consider the initial boundary value problem for the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations of large-scale moist atmosphere which are used to describe the turbulent behavior of long-term weather prediction and climate changes. First, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions of the problem. Second, by studying the long-time behavior of strong solutions, we construct a (weak) universal attractor which captures all the trajectories.
In this paper, we consider two Approximate Deconvolution Magnetohydrodynamics models which are related to Large Eddy Simulation. We first study existence and uniqueness of solutions in the double viscous case. Then, we study existence and uniqueness of solutions of the Approximate Deconvolution MHD model with magnetic diffusivity, but without kinematic viscosity. In each case, we give the optimal value of regularizations where we can prove global existence and uniqueness of the solutions. The second model includes the Approximate Deconvolution Euler Model as a particular case. Finally, an asym…
In this paper, we study the global existence, uniqueness and large-time behavior of spherically symmetric solution of a viscous radiative and reactive gas in an unbounded domain exterior to the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for $n\geq 2$. The key point in the analysis is to deduce certain uniform estimates on the solutions, especially on the uniform positive lower and upper bounds on the specific volume and the temperature.
We consider a coupled PDE-ODE system describing the motion of the rigid body in a container filled with the incompressible, viscous fluid. The fluid and the rigid body are coupled via Navier slip boundary condition. We prove that the local in time strong solution is unique in the larger class of weak solutions on the interval of its existence. This is the first weak-strong uniqueness result in the area of fluid-structure interaction with a moving boundary.
We examine a viscous Cahn-Hilliard phase-separation model with memory and where the chemical potential possesses a nonlocal fractional Laplacian operator. The existence of global weak solutions is proven using a Galerkin approximation scheme. A continuous dependence estimate provides uniqueness of the weak solutions and also serves to define a precompact pseudometric. This, in addition to the existence of a bounded absorbing set, shows that the associated semigroup of solution operators admits a compact connected global attractor in the weak energy phase space. The minimal assumptions on the n…
We study existence, uniqueness, regularity and asymptotic spatial behavior of a Navier-Stokes flow past a body moving by a time-periodic translational motion of period $T$, and with zero average. For example, $\mathscr B$ moves in an oscillating fashion. The flow is also time-periodic with same period $T$. However, sufficiently ``far" from the body, the oscillatory component decays faster than the averaged component, so that the flow shows there a distinctive steady-state character. This provides a rigorous proof of the ``steady streaming" phenomenon.
We give a proof of existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to parabolic quasilinear equations for a fairly general class of nonconvex Hamiltonians with superlinear growth in the gradient variable. The approach is mainly based on classical techniques for uniformly parabolic quasilinear equations and on the Lipschitz estimates proved in [S.N. Armstrong and H.V. Tran, Viscosity solutions of general viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations, Math. Ann., 361 (2015)], as well as on viscosity solution arguments.
We study a diffusion model of phase field type, consisting of a system of two partial differential equations encoding the balances of microforces and microenergy; the two unknowns are the order parameter and the chemical potential. By a careful development of uniform estimates and the deduction of certain useful boundedness properties, we prove existence and uniqueness of a global-in-time smooth solution to the associated initial/boundary-value problem; moreover, we give a description of the relative omega-limit set.
We study ground states of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions in a trap $V(x)$ rotating at the velocity $Ω$. It is known that there exist a critical rotational velocity $0<Ω^*:=Ω^*(V)\leq \infty$ and a critical number $0<a^*<\infty$ such that for any rotational velocity $0\le Ω<Ω^*$, ground states exist if and only if the coupling constant $a$ satisfies $a<a^*$. For a general class of traps $V(x)$, which may not be symmetric, we prove in this paper that up to a constant phase, there exists a unique ground state as $a\nearrow a^*$, where $Ω\in(0,Ω^*)$ is fixed…
In a recent paper, Brendle showed the uniqueness of the Bryant soliton among 3-dimensional $κ$-solutions. In this paper, we present an alternative proof for this fact and show that compact $κ$-solutions are rotational symmetric. Our proof arose from independent work relating to our Strong Stability Theorem for singular Ricci flows.
In this paper we study the classification of compact $κ$-noncollapsed ancient solutions to the 3-dimensional Ricci flow which are rotationally and reflection symmetric. We prove that any such solution is isometric to the sphere or the type II ancient solution constructed by G. Perelman.
We consider weak (''Leray'') solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes system with Oseen and rotational terms, in an exterior domain. It is shown the velocity may be split into a constant times the first column of the fundamental solution of the Oseen system, plus a remainder term decaying pointwise near infinity at a rate which is higher than the decay rate of the Oseen tensor. This result improves the theory by M. Kyed, Asymptotic profile of a linearized flow past a rotating body, Q. Appl. Math. 71 (2013), 489-500.
In this note, we show the existence of regular solutions to the stationary version of the Navier-Stokes system for compressible fluids with a density dependent viscosity, known as the shallow water equations. For arbitrary large forcing we are able to construct a solution, provided the total mass is sufficiently large. The main mathematical part is located in the construction of solutions. Uniqueness is impossible to obtain, since the gradient of the velocity is of magnitude of the force. The investigation is connected to the corresponding singular limit as Mach number goes to zero and methods…
