We introduce the strength for sections of a line bundle on an algebraic variety. This generalizes the strength of homogeneous polynomials that has been recently introduced to resolve Stillman's conjecture, an important problem in commutative algebra. We establish the first properties of this notion and give some tool to obtain upper bounds on the strength in this framework. Moreover, we show some results on the usual strength such as the reducibility of the set of strength two homogeneous polynomials.
This paper reproves a general form of the Green-Lazarsfeld 'generic vanishing' theorem and more recent strengthenings, as well as giving some new applications.
This is an expository article on the recent developments of Hodge theory on moduli spaces of smooth projective varieties with semi-ample canonical line bundles.
In this paper we study Brill-Noether loci for rank-two vector bundles and describe the general member of some components as suitable extensions of line bundles.
We establish that the isomorphy type as an abstract algebraic variety of the complement of an ample hyperplane sub-bundle H of a projective space bundle of rank r-1 over the projective line depends only on the the r-fold self-intersection of H . In particular it depends neither on the ambient bundle nor on a particular ample hyperplane sub-bundle with given r-fold self-intersection. Our proof exploits the unexpected property that every such complement comes equipped with the structure of a non trivial torsor under a vector bundle on the affine line with a double origin.
We study line bundles on toric DM stacks $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$ of dimension two. We give a combinatorial criterion of when infinitely many line bundles on $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$ have trivial cohomology. We further discuss the structure of the set of such line bundles.
Here we study vector bundles $E$ on the Hirzebruch surface $F_e$ such that their twists by a spanned, but not ample, line bundle $M = \mathcal {O}_{F_e}(h+ef)$ have natural cohomology, i.e. $h^0(F_e,E(tM)) >0$ implies $h^1(F_e,E(tM)) = 0$.
We study analogues of the usual Picard group for smooth analytic or non-singular algebraic varieties but instead of line bundles we study line bundles with a connection. We choose an approach which works for both cases.
We use the toric degeneration of Bott-Samelson varieties and the description of cohomolgy of line bundles on toric varieties to deduce vanishings results for the cohomology of lines bundles on Bott-Samelson varieties.
In this note we study properties of partially ample line bundles on simplicial projective toric varieties. We prove that the cone of q-ample line bundles is a union of rational polyhedral cones, and calculate these cones in examples. We prove a restriction theorem for big q-ample line bundles, and deduce that q-ampleness of the anticanonical bundle is not invariant under flips. Finally we prove a Kodaira-type vanishing theorem for q-ample line bundles.
In this paper we construct the Poincare line bundle for the stack of Higgs bundles on smooth projective curves and show that it induces a fully-faithful Fourier-Mukai transform on the category of quasi-coherent sheaves.
We show that the Nakai--Moishezon ampleness criterion holds for real line bundles on complete schemes. As applications, we treat the relative Nakai--Moishezon ampleness criterion for real line bundles and the Nakai--Moishezon ampleness criterion for real line bundles on complete algebraic spaces. The main ingredient of this paper is Birkar's characterization of augmented base loci of real divisors on projective schemes.
Given a vector bundle $E$ on an irreducible projective variety $X$ we give a necessary and sufficient criterion for $E$ to be a direct image of a line bundle under an étale morphism. The criterion in question is the existence of a Cartan subalgebra bundle of the endomorphism bundle $\text{End}(E)$. As a corollary, a criterion is obtained for $E$ to be the direct image of the structure sheaf under an étale morphism. The direct image of a parabolic line bundle under any ramified covering map has a natural parabolic structure. Given a parabolic vector bundle, we give a similar criterion for it to…
We investigate the deformations of pairs $(X,L)$, where $L$ is a line bundle on a smooth projective variety $X$, defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic 0. In particular, we prove that the DG-Lie algebra controlling the deformations of the pair $(X,L)$ is homotopy abelian whenever $X$ has trivial canonical bundle, and so these deformations are unobstructed.
Previously, many people have studied a stability of vector bundles of given rank and Chern classes on algebraic varieties. Recently, we are interested in the slope stability of the rank 2 Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C,Z}$ on a K3 surface $X$ associated to a very ample smooth curve $C$ on $X$ and a base point free pencil $Z$ on $C$ with respect to $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$. In this paper, we will give a sufficient condition for such a Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C,Z}$ to be $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$-slope semistable by ACM line bundles with respect to $\mathcal{O}_X(C)$.
The aim of this brief note for the volume in honor of S. S. Chern is to give a construction for $p$-torsion line bundles in characteristic $p>0$ which plays a similar rôle as the standard connection on an $n$-torsion line bundle in characteristic 0.
A horospherical variety is a normal algebraic variety where a connected reductive algebraic group acts with an open orbit isomorphic to a torus bundle over a flag variety. In this article we study the cohomology of line bundles on complete horospherical varieties.
We prove that the tensor product of two line bundles, one being $q$-ample and the other with sufficiently low-dimensional base locus, is still $q$-ample.
We study k-jet ampleness of line bundles on hyperelliptic surfaces using vanishing theorems. Our main result states that on a hyperelliptic surface of an arbitrary type a line bundle of type (m,m) with m\geq k+2 is k-jet ample.
We introduce a notion of regularity for coherent sheaves on Grassmannians of lines. We use this notion to prove some extension of Evans-Griffith criterion to characterize direct sums of line bundles. We also give a cohomological characterization of exterior and symmetric powers of the universal bundles of the Grassmannian.
We study the linearization of line bundles and the local structure of actions of connected linear algebraic groups, in the setting of seminormal varieties. We show that several classical results about normal varieties extend to that setting, if the Zariski topology is replaced with the étale topology.
Let C be an integral projective curve with surficial singularities. We prove that topologically trivial line bundles on the compactified Jacobian of C are in one-to-one correspondence with line bundles on C (the autoduality conjecture), and compute the cohomology of the line bundles. We also show that the natural Fourier-Mukai functor between the derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on the Jacobian and on the compactified Jacobian is fully faithful.
The goal of this work is to pursue the study of pseudo-effective line bundles and vector bundles. Our first result is a generalization of the Hard Lefschetz theorem for cohomology with values in a pseudo-effective line bundle. The Lefschetz map is shown to be surjective when (and, in general, only when) the pseudo-effective line bundle is twisted by its multiplier ideal sheaf. This result has several geometric applications, e.g. to the study of compact Kähler manifolds with pseudo-effective canonical or anti-canonical line bundles. Another concern is to understand pseudo-effectivity in more al…
Let $X \subset \mathbb P^3$ be a smooth hypersurface of degree $6$ over complex numbers. In this paper, we give a characterization of initialized and ACM bundles of rank $1$ on $X$ with respect to the line bundle given by a smooth hyperplane section of $X$.
Any line bundle $\cl $ on a smooth curve $C$ of genus $g$ with $°\cl \ge 2g+1$ is normally generated, i.e., $φ_\cl (C)\subseteq \mathbb P H^0 (C,\cl)$ is projectively normal. However, it has known that more various line bundles of degree $d$ failing to be normally generated appear on multiple coverings of genus $g$ as $d$ becomes smaller than $2g+1$. Thus, investigating the normal generation of line bundles on multiple coverings can be an effective approach to the normal generation. In this paper, we obtain conditions for line bundles on multiple coverings being normally generated or not, resp…
This paper provides some technical results needed in "Formalism for Relative Gromov-Witten Invariants." We study line-bundles on the moduli stacks of relative stable and rubber maps that are used to define relative Gromov-Witten invariants in the sense of J. Li. Relations between these line-bundles yield degeneration formulae. In addition we prove a technical result called the Trivial Cylinders Theorem.
Our goal is to study the syzygies of the projective embeddings defined by ample line bundles on a fake projective plane S. The syzygies are studied in terms of the property $N_p$. For various kinds of ample line bundles, we give explicit lower bounds for their powers above which the property $N_p$ is satisfied.
We construct projectivization of a parabolic vector bundle and a tautological line bundle over it. It is shown that a parabolic vector bundle is ample if and only if the tautological line bundle is ample. This allows us to generalize the notion of a k-ample bundle, introduced by Sommese, to the context of parabolic bundles. A parabolic vector bundle $E_*$ is defined to be k-ample if the tautological line bundle ${\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb P}(E_*)}(1)$ is $k$--ample. We establish some properties of parabolic k-ample bundles.
We prove a parametric Oka principle for equivariant sections of a holomorphic fibre bundle $E$ with a structure group bundle $\mathscr G$ on a reduced Stein space $X$, such that the fibre of $E$ is a homogeneous space of the fibre of $\mathscr G$, with the complexification $K^\mathbb C$ of a compact real Lie group $K$ acting on $X$, $\mathscr G$, and $E$. Our main result is that the inclusion of the space of $K^\mathbb C$-equivariant holomorphic sections of $E$ over $X$ into the space of $K$-equivariant continuous sections is a weak homotopy equivalence. The result has a wide scope; we describ…
We characterize the triples (X,L,H), consisting of holomorphic line bundles L and H on a complex projective manifold X, such that for some positive integer k, the k-th holomorphic jet bundle of L, J_k(L), is isomorphic to a direct sum H+...+H. Given the geometrical constrains imposed by a projectivized line bundle being a product of the base and a projective space it is natural to expect that this would happen only under very rare circumstances. It is shown, in fact, that X is either an Abelian variety or projective space. In the former case L\cong H is any line bundle of Chern class zero. In …
In a recent preprint, H. Tsuji gave a number of interesting assertions on the structure of pseudo-effective line bundles on projective manifolds. In particular, he postulated the existence of an almost-holomorphic "reduction map", whose fibers are maximal subvarieties on which the line bundle is numerically trivial. The purpose of this note is to give a simple, algebraic proof of the existence of a reduction map in the case where the line bundle is nef.
For a certain class of vector bundles E on abelian varieties A over local fields containing all line bundles algebraically equivalent to zero we define a canonical representation of the Tate module of A on the fibre of E in the zero section. This extends an old construction of Tate for line bundles to vector bundles of higher rank. We also compare this construction to the theory of parallel transport for vector bundles on p-adic curves developed in mathAG/0403516. Relations with the Hodge-Tate decomposition are also explained.
We study the Fourier-Mukai functor D(Y) -> D(X) induced by the universal family on a fine moduli space Y for simple semihomogeneous vector bundles on an abelian variety X. The main result is that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a very negative line bundle on Y is ample if and only if the bundles parametrized by Y are nef.
We treat the problem of completing the moduli space for roots of line bundles on curves. Special attention is devoted to higher spin curves within the universal Picard scheme. Two new different constructions, both using line bundles on nodal curves as boundary points, are carried out and compared with pre-existing ones.
We explain a method for calculating the cohomology of line bundles on a toric variety in terms of the cohomology of certain constructible sheaves on the polytope. We show its effective use by means of some examples.
We propose a new method, using deformation theory, to study the maximal rank conjecture. For line bundles of extremal degree, which can be viewed as the first case to test the conjecture, we prove that maximal rank conjecture holds by our new method.
We show that any complex manifold that has a divisor whose normalization has non-zero first Betti number either has a non-trivial holomorphic gerbe which does not trivialize meromorphicly or a meromorphic line bundle not equivalent to any holomorphic line bundle. Similarly, higher Betti numbers of divisors correspond to higher gerbes or meromorphic gerbes. We give several new examples.
We study k-very ampleness of line bundles on blow-ups of hyperelliptic surfaces at r very general points. We obtain a numerical condition on the number of points for which a line bundle on the blow-up of a hyperelliptic surface at these r points gives an embedding of order k.
We prove that the moduli of stable supercurves with punctures is a smooth proper DM stack and study an analog of the Mumford's isomorphism for its canonical line bundle.
We study exceptional collections of line bundles on surfaces. We prove that any full cyclic strong exceptional collection of line bundles on a rational surface is an augmentation in the sense of L.Hille and M.Perling. We find simple geometric criteria of exceptionality (strong exceptionality, cyclic strong exceptionality) for collections of line bundles on weak del Pezzo surfaces. As a result, we classify smooth projective surfaces admitting a full cyclic strong exceptional collection of line bundles. Also, we provide an example of a weak del Pezzo surface of degree 2 and a full strong excepti…
Let $L$ be a line bundle on a scheme $X$, proper over a field. The property of $L$ being nef can sometimes be "thickened", allowing reductions to positive characteristic. We call such line bundles arithmetically nef. It is known that a line bundle $L$ may be nef, but not arithmetically nef. We show that $L$ is arithmetically nef if and only if its restriction to its stable base locus is arithmetically nef. Consequently, if $L$ is nef and its stable base locus has dimension $1$ or less, then $L$ is arithmetically nef.
Corrado Segre played a leading role in the foundation of line geometry. We survey some recent results on degeneracy loci of morphisms of vector bundles where he still is of profound inspiration.
A conjecture of Batyrev and Manin relates arithmetic properties of varieties with ample anticanonical class to geometric invariants; in particular, counting functions defined by metrized ample line bundles and the corresponding asymptotics of rational points of bounded height are interpreted in terms of cones of effective divisors and certain thresholds with respect to these cones. This framework leads to the notion of balanced line bundles, whose counting functions, conjecturally, capture generic distributions of rational points. We investigate balanced line bundles in the context of the Mini…
Given a nef and big line bundle $L$ on a projective variety $X$ of dimension $d \geq 2$, we prove that the Seshadri constant of $L$ at a very general point is larger than $(d+1)^{\frac{1}{d}-1}$. This slightly improves the lower bound $1/d$ established by Ein, Küchle and Lazarsfeld. The proof relies on the concept of successive minima for line bundles recently introduced by Ambro and Ito.
