We present a general framework for obtaining currential double transgression formulas on complex manifolds which can be seen as manifestations of Bott-Chern Duality. These results complement on one hand the simple transgression formulas obtained by Harvey -Lawson and on the other hand the double transgression formulas of Bismut-Gillet-Soulé.
Among the applications we mention a Gysin isomorphism for Bott-Chern cohomology, an abstract Poincaré-Lelong formula for sections of holomorphic and Hermitian vector bundles implying Andersson's generalization of the standard Poincaré-Lelong, a Bott-Chern duality formula for the Chern-Fulton classes of singular varieties or a refinement of the first author's simple transgression formula for the Chern character of a Quillen superconnection associated to a self-adjoint, odd endomorphism. The existence of a Bismut-Gillet-Soulé double transgression without the hypothesis of degeneration along a submanifold stands out and is based on an extension to linear correspondences of the operation of morphism addition. Finally, as a by-product we also obtain a statement about the {pointwise localization} of the Samuel multiplicity of an analytic subvariety of a complex manifold along an irreducible component.
We compute the Chern-Simons transgressed forms of some modularly invariant characteristic forms, which are related to the elliptic genera. We study the modularity properties of these secondary characteristic forms and the relations among them. We also compute the Chern-Simons forms of some vector bundles over free loop space.
We formulate and prove a formula for transgressing characteristic forms in general associated bundles following a method of Chern. As applications, we derive D. Johnson's explicit formula for such general transgression and Chern's first transgression formula for the Euler class.
We propose a generalization of the Hodge $dd_c$-lemma to the case of hyperkähler manifolds. As an application of this result we derive the global construction of the fourth order transgression of the Chern character forms of hyperholomorphic bundles over compact hyperkähler manifolds. At the second part of the paper we consider the fourth order transgression for the infinite dimensional bundle arising from local families of hyperkähler manifolds. We propose a local construction of the fourth order transgression of the Chern character form. We derive an explicit expression for arising hypertors…
We define transgressions of arbitrary order, with respect to families of unit-vector fields indexed by a polytope, for the Pfaffian of metric connections for semi-Riemannian metrics on vector bundles. We apply this formula to compute the Euler characteristic of a Riemannian polyhedral manifold in the spirit of Chern's differential-geometric proof of the generalized Gauss-Bonnet formula on closed manifolds and on manifolds-with-boundary. As a consequence, we derive an identity for spherical and hyperbolic polyhedra linking the volumes of faces of even codimension and the measures of outer angle…
In this paper we continue our study of the fourth order transgression on hyperähler manifolds introduced in the previous paper. We give a local construction for the fourth-order transgression of the Chern character form of an arbitrary vector bundle supplied with a self-dual connection on a four dimensional hyperkähler manifold. The construction is based on the harmonic twistor formalism. Remarkably, the resulted expression for the fourth order transgression is given in terms of the determinant of the $\bar{\partial}$-operator defined on fibers of the twistor fibration.
This paper contains the constructions of a real manifold version of relative K-theory, and of an extension of Karoubi's multiplicative K-theory suggested by U. Bunke (which I call ``free multiplicative K-theory'' in the sequel). Chern-Simons-Nadel type classes on relative K-theory are constructed, while it is proved that on free multiplicative K-theory, there is a notion of Chern-Weil character form, and of a Borel-type characteristic class (which is a differential form modulo exact forms) which recovers the classes $c_k$ of flat vector bundles studied by Bismut and Lott. Finally, a direct ima…
We provide local expressions for Chern-Weil type forms built from superconnections associated with families of Dirac operators previously investigated in work by S. Scott and later work by S. Scott and the second author. When the underlying fibration of manifolds is trivial, the even degree forms can be interpreted as renormalised Chern-Weil forms in as far as they coincide with regularised Chern-Weil forms up to residue correction terms. Similarly, a new formula for the curvature of the local fermionic vacuum line bundles is derived using a residue correction term added to the naive curvature…
We generalize some of the results of Harvey, Lawson and Latschev about transgression formulas. The focus here is on flowing forms via vertical vector fields, especially Morse-Bott-Smale vector fields. We prove a very general transgression formula including also a version covering non-compact situations. Among applications, we completely answer a question of Quillen, construct the Maslov spark, give a very short proof of a refined Chern- Gauss-Bonnet theorem, and reprove some theorems of Nicolaescu and Getzler. A discussion about odd Chern-Weil theory is also included.
We compute explicit transgression forms for the Euler and Pontrjagin classes of a Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension 4 under a conformal change of the metric, or a change to a Riemannian connection with torsion. These formulae describe the singular set of some connections with singularities on compact manifolds as a residue formula in terms of a polynomial of invariants. We give some applications for minimal submanifolds of Kaehler manifolds. We also express the difference of the first Chern class of two almost complex structures, and in particular an obstruction to the existence of a homoto…
For a smooth family F of admissible elliptic pseudodifferential operators with differential form coefficients associated to a geometric fibration of manifolds M--> B we show that there is a natural zeta-form z(F,s) and zeta-determinant- form det(F) in the de-Rham algebra of smooth differential forms, generalizing the classical single operator spectral zeta function and determinant. In the case where F is the curvature of a superconnection the zeta form is exact, extending to families the Atiyah-Bott-Seeley zeta function formula for the pointwise index, and equivalent to the transgression formu…
In studying the Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies for q-complete manifolds, we introduce the class of cohomologically Bott-Chern q-complete manifolds.
We use the mapping cone for the relative deRham cohomology of a manifold with boundary in order to show that the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet Theorem for oriented Riemannian vector bundles over such manifolds is a manifestation of Lefschetz Duality in any of the two embodiments of the latter. We explain how Thom isomorphism fits into this picture, complementing thus the classical results about Thom forms with compact support. When the rank is odd, we construct, by using secondary transgression forms introduced here, a new closed pair of forms on the disk bundle associated to a vector bundle, pair which …
Let $(X,J,ω)$ be a compact $2n$-dimensional almost Kähler manifold. We prove primitive decompositions for Bott-Chern and Aeppli harmonic forms in special bidegrees and show that such bidegrees are optimal. We also show how the spaces of primitive Bott-Chern, Aeppli, Dolbeault and $\partial$-harmonic forms on $(X,J,ω)$ are related.
We give an explicit description of the Bott-Chern cohomology groups of a compact Vaisman manifold in terms of the basic cohomology. We infer that the Bott-Chern numbers and the Dolbeault numbers of a Vaisman manifold determine each other. On the other hand, we show that the cohomological invariants $Δ^k$ introduced by Angella-Tomassini are unbounded for Vaisman manifolds. Finally, we give a cohomological characterization of the Dolbeault and Bott-Chern formality for Vaisman metrics.
On a compact complex manifold $X$, we prove a Frölicher-type inequality for Bott-Chern cohomology and we show that the equality holds if and only if $X$ satisfies the $\partial\overline{\partial}$-Lemma.
Given a compact complex manifold $X$ and a integrable Beltrami differential $ϕ\in A^{0,1}(X, T_{X}^{1,0})$, we introduce a double complex structure on $A^{\bullet,\bullet}(X)$ naturally determined by $ϕ$ and study its Bott-Chern cohomology. In particular, we establish a deformation theory for Bott-Chern cohomology and use it to compute the deformed Bott-Chern cohomology for the Iwasawa manifold and the holomorphically parallelizable Nakamura manifold. The $\partial\bar{\partial}_ϕ$-lemma is studied and we show a compact complex manifold satisfying $\partial\bar{\partial}_ϕ$-lemma is formal.
We study Bott-Chern cohomology on compact complex non-Kähler surfaces. In particular, we compute such a cohomology for compact complex surfaces in class $\text{VII}$ and for compact complex surfaces diffeomorphic to solvmanifolds.
This survey summarizes the results discussed in a talk at "Bielefeld Geometry & Topology Days" held at Bielefeld University in July 2015. We are interested in quantitative and qualitative properties of Bott-Chern cohomology. We announce new results obtained in [D. Angella, N. Tardini, Quantitative and qualitative cohomological properties for non-Kähler manifolds, arXiv:1507.07108] jointly with Nicoletta Tardini. In particular, we prove an upper bound of the dimensions of Bott-Chern cohomology in terms of Hodge numbers. We also introduce a notion, called Schweitzer qualitative property, which e…
We propose a version of the Hodge conjecture in Bott-Chern cohomology and using results from characterizing real holomorphic chains by real rectifiable currents to provide a proof for this question. We define a Bott-Chern differential cohomology and use atomic section theory of Harvey and Lawson to construct refined Bott-Chern classes for holomorphic vector bundles in this differential cohomology. These refined Bott-Chern classes transform naturally to standard Chern classes, Bott-Chern classes and Cheeger-Simons' refined Chern classes.
Let $(M,J,g,ω)$ be a $2n$-dimensional almost Hermitian manifold. We extend the definition of the Bott-Chern Laplacian on $(M,J,g,ω)$, proving that it is still elliptic. On a compact Kähler manifold, the kernels of the Dolbeault Laplacian and of the Bott-Chern Laplacian coincide. We show that such a property does not hold when $(M,J,g,ω)$ is a compact almost Kähler manifold, providing an explicit almost Kähler structure on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold. Furthermore, if $(M,J,g,ω)$ is a connected compact almost Hermitian $4$-manifold, denoting by $h^{1,1}_{BC}$ the dimension of the space of Bott…
Let $X$ be a cohomologically $(n-1)$-complete complex manifold of dimension $n\geq 2$. We prove a vanishing result for the Bott-Chern cohomology group of type $(1, 1)$ with compact support in $X$, which combined with the well-known technique of Ehrenpreis implies a Hartogs type extension theorem for pluriharmonic functions on $X$.
For even dimensional manifolds, we prove some twisted anomaly cancellation formulas which generalize some well-known cancellation formulas. For odd dimensional manifolds, we obtain some modularly invariant characteristic forms by the Chern-Simons transgression and we also get some twisted anomaly cancellation formulas.
We introduce a "qualitative property" for Bott-Chern cohomology of complex non-Kähler manifolds, which is motivated in view of the study of the algebraic structure of Bott-Chern cohomology. We prove that such a property characterizes the validity of the $\partial\overline\partial$-Lemma. This follows from a quantitative study of Bott-Chern cohomology. In this context, we also prove a new bound on the dimension of the Bott-Chern cohomology in terms of the Hodge numbers. We also give a generalization of this upper bound, with applications to symplectic cohomologies.
A notion of geometric formality in the context of Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies on a complex manifold is discussed. In particular, by using Aeppli-Bott-Chern-Massey triple products, it is proved that geometric Aeppli-Bott-Chern formality is not stable under small deformations of the complex structure.
We study conditions under which sub-complexes of a double complex of vector spaces allow to compute the Bott-Chern cohomology. We are especially aimed at studying the Bott-Chern cohomology of special classes of solvmanifolds, namely, complex parallelizable solvmanifolds and solvmanifolds of splitting type. More precisely, we can construct explicit finite-dimensional double complexes that allow to compute the Bott-Chern cohomology of compact quotients of complex Lie groups, respectively, of some Lie groups of the type $\mathbb{C}^n\ltimes_φN$ where $N$ is nilpotent. As an application, we comput…
It is proved that the properties of being Dolbeault formal and geometrically-Bott-Chern-formal are not closed under holomorphic deformations of the complex structure. Further, we construct a compact complex manifold which satisfies the $\partial\overline{\partial}$-lemma but admits a non vanishing Aeppli-Bott-Chern-Massey product.
For every positive integer $r$, we introduce two new cohomologies, that we call $E_r$-Bott-Chern and $E_r$-Aeppli, on compact complex manifolds. When $r=1$, they coincide with the usual Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies, but they are coarser, respectively finer, than these when $r\geq 2$. They provide analogues in the Bott-Chern-Aeppli context of the $E_r$-cohomologies featuring in the Frölicher spectral sequence of the manifold. We apply these new cohomologies in several ways to characterise the notion of page-$(r-1)$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds that we introduced very recently. We also…
We develop a theory of Cech-Bott-Chern cohomology and in this context we naturally come up with the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. In fact Bott-Chern cohomology has two relatives and they all arise from a single complex. Thus we study these three cohomologies in a unified way and obtain a long exact sequence involving the three. We then study the localization problem of characteristic classes in the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. For this we define the cup product and integration in our framework and we discuss local and global duality homomorphisms. After reviewing some materials on connect…
Let $(M,J,g,ω)$ be a Kähler manifold. We prove a $W^{1,2}$ weak Bott-Chern decomposition and a $W^{1,2}$ weak Dolbeault decomposition, following the $L^2$ weak Kodaira decomposition on Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, if the Kähler metric is complete and the sectional curvature is bounded, the $W^{1,2}$ Bott-Chern decomposition is strictly related to the space of $W^{1,2}$ Bott-Chern harmonic forms, i.e., $W^{1,2}$ smooth differential forms which are in the kernel of an elliptic differential operator of order $4$, called Bott-Chern Laplacian. We also generalize to the non compact case the well …
We give the complete Bott-Chern-Aeppli cohomology for compact complex 3-folds in terms of Dolbeault, Frolicher, a bi-degree DeRham-like type of cohomology, $K^{p,q}$, defined as $$ K^{p,q}=\frac{ker( \partial ) \cap ker( {\bar{\partial}}) }{im( \partial )\cap ker( {\bar{\partial}} )+im( {\bar{\partial}})\cap ker( \partial )}$$ and ${\check{H}}^1({\mathcal{PH}})$. (Here $\mathcal{PH}$ is the sheaf of phuri-harmonic functions.) We then work out the complete Bott-Chern-Aeppli cohomology in some examples. We give the Bott-Chern-Aeppli cohomology for a hypothetical complex structure on $S^6$ in ter…
The Bott-Chern cohomology of 6-dimensional nilmanifolds endowed with invariant complex structure is studied with special attention to the cases when balanced or strongly Gauduchon Hermitian metrics exist. We consider complex invariants introduced by Angella and Tomassini and by Schweitzer, which are related to the $\partial \bar\partial$-lemma condition and defined in terms of the Bott-Chern cohomology, and show that the vanishing of some of these invariants is not a closed property under holomorphic deformations. In the balanced case, we determine the spaces that parametrize deformations in t…
We study quaternionic Bott-Chern cohomology on compact hypercomplex manifolds and adapt some results from complex geometry to the quaternionic setting. For instance, we prove a criterion for the existence of HKT metrics on compact hypercomplex manifolds of real dimension 8 analogous to the one given by Teleman [35] and Angella-Dloussky-Tomassini [3] for compact complex surfaces.
We prove that on a compact almost Hermitian 4-manifold the space of $\bar\partial$-harmonic $(1,1)$-forms always has dimension $h_{\bar\partial}^{1,1} = b_- +1$ or $b_-$, whilst the space of Bott-Chern harmonic $(1,1)$-forms always has dimension $h_{BC}^{1,1} = b_- +1$. We also perform calculations of $h^{2,1}_{BC}$ and $h^{1,2}_{BC}$ on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold, thereby providing a full account of when $h^{p,q}_{BC}$ is or is not invariant of the choice of almost Hermitian metric. Finally, we introduce a decomposition of the space of $L^2$ functions on all torus bundles over $S^1$, which…
In this paper, we introduce six axioms for relative Bott-Chern secondary characteristic classes and prove the uniqueness and existence theorem for them. Such a work provides us a natural way to understand and hence to prove the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem.
We study the symplectic Bott-Chern cohomology by L.-S. Tseng and S.-T. Yau for solvmanifolds endowed with left-invariant symplectic structures. Our results are applicable to cohomology with values in local systems. Studying symplectic Bott-Chern cohomology of solvmanifolds with values in local systems, we give some remarks on symplectic Hodge theory.

The aim of this article is to study the geometry of Bott-Chern hypercohomology from the bimeromorphic point of view. We construct some new bimeromorphic invariants involving the cohomology for the sheaf of germs of pluriharmonic functions, the truncated holomorphic de Rham cohomology, and the de Rham cohomology. To define these invariants, using a sheaf-theoretic approach, we establish a blow-up formula together with a canonical morphism for the Bott-Chern hypercohomology. In particular, we compute the invariants of some compact complex threefolds, such as Iwasawa manifolds and quintic threefo…
It is shown that the singular set for the Yang-Mills flow on unstable holomorphic vector bundles over compact Kaehler manifolds is completely determined by the Harder-Narasimhan-Seshadri filtration of the initial holomorphic bundle. We assign a multiplicity to irreducible top dimensional components of the singular set of a holomorphic bundle with a filtration by saturated subsheaves. We derive a singular Bott-Chern formula relating the second Chern form of a smooth metric on the bundle to the Chern current of an admissible metric on the associated graded sheaf. This is used to show that the mu…
Using the concept of a cohesive module defined by Block, we use the theory of superconnections in the sense of Quillen to construct natural superconnections on Hermitian cohesive modules. By the Chern-Weil construction, we obtain characteristic classes with values in Bott-Chern cohomology which refines the usual deRham cohomology. The main result of this paper shows that such characteristic classes are independent of the Hermitian metric and only dependent on the homotopy class of the cohesive module in the homotopy category. This extends the Bott-Chern cohomology to the bounded derived catego…
The purpose of this paper is to study the bimeromorphic invariants of compact complex manifolds in terms of Bott-Chern cohomology. We prove a blow-up formula for Bott-Chern cohomology. As an application, we show that for compact complex threefolds the non-Kählerness degrees, introduced by Angella-Tomassini [Invent. Math. 192, (2013), 71-81], are bimeromorphic invariants. Consequently, the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-Lemma on threefolds admits the bimeromorphic invariance.
We use Chern-Weil theory for Hermitian holomorphic vector bundles with canonical connections for explicit computation of the Chern forms of trivial bundles with special non-diagonal Hermitian metrics. We prove that every del-dellbar exact real form of the type (k,k) on an n-dimensional complex manifold X arises as a difference of the Chern character forms of trivial Hermitian vector bundles with canonical connections, and that (modulo the image of del and delbar) every real form of type (k,k), k<n, arises as a Bott-Chern form for two Hermitian metrics on some trivial vector bundle over X. The …
The goal of the memoir is to develop a new cohomology theory which encompasses De Rham and Dolbeault cohomology as well as Deligne Beilinson cohomology, in the context of general complex analytic manifolds. The special case of the Iwasawa manifold is investigated as a typical example of what occurs in the non Kähler case. Elementary applications to the Kodaira-Spencer deformation theory and to the calculation of Chern classes are given.
We define Aeppli and Bott-Chern cohomology for bi-generalized complex manifolds and show that they are finite dimensional for compact bi-generalized Hermitian manifolds. For totally bounded double complexes $(A, d', d'')$, we show that the validity of $d'd''$-lemma is equivalent to having the same dimension of several cohomology groups. Some calculations of Bott-Chern cohomology groups of some bi-generalized Hermitian manifolds are given.
We provide further techniques to study the Dolbeault and Bott-Chern cohomologies of deformations of solvmanifolds by means of finite-dimensional complexes. By these techniques, we can compute the Dolbeault and Bott-Chern cohomologies of some complex solvmanifolds, and we also get explicit examples, showing in particular that either the $\partial\overline{\partial}$-Lemma or the property that the Hodge and Frölicher spectral sequence degenerates at the first level are not closed under deformations.
This note announces a general construction of characteristic currents for singular connections on a vector bundle. It develops, in particular, a Chern-Weil-Simons theory for smooth bundle maps $α: E \rightarrow F$ which, for smooth connections on $E$ and $F$, establishes formulas of the type $$ ϕ\ = \ \text{\rm Res}_ϕΣ_α + dT. $$ Here $ϕ$ is a standard charactersitic form, $\text{Res}_ϕ$ is an associated smooth ``residue'' form computed canonically in terms of curvature, $Σ_α$ is a rectifiable current depending only on the singular structure of $α$, and $T$ is a canonical, functorial transgres…
