This note announces a general construction of characteristic currents for singular connections on a vector bundle. It develops, in particular, a Chern-Weil-Simons theory for smooth bundle maps $α: E \rightarrow F$ which, for smooth connections on $E$ and $F$, establishes formulas of the type $$ ϕ\ = \ \text{\rm Res}_ϕΣ_α + dT. $$ Here $ϕ$ is a standard charactersitic form, $\text{Res}_ϕ$ is an associated smooth ``residue'' form computed canonically in terms of curvature, $Σ_α$ is a rectifiable current depending only on the singular structure of $α$, and $T$ is a canonical, functorial transgression form with coefficients in $\loc$. The theory encompasses such classical topics as: Poincaré-Lelong Theory, Bott-Chern Theory, Chern-Weil Theory, and formulas of Hopf. Applications include:\ \ a new proof of the Riemann-Roch Theorem for vector bundles over algebraic curves, a $C^{\infty}$-generalization of the Poincaré-Lelong Formula, universal formulas for the Thom class as an equivariant characteristic form (i.e., canonical formulas for a de Rham representative of the Thom class of a bundle with connection), and a Differentiable Riemann-Roch-Grothendieck Theorem at the level of forms and currents. A variety of formulas relating geometry and characteristic classes are deduced as direct consequences of the theory.
In this paper, we generalize the results in [Y. Wang: Affine connections on singular warped products. Int. J. Geom. Methods Mod. Phys. 18(5), 2150076, (2021).] to singular multiply warped products and singular twisted products. We study singular multiply warped products and singular twisted products and their curvature with the semi-symmetric metric connection and the semi-symmetric non-metric connection. We also discuss Koszul forms associated with the almost product structure and their curvature of singular multiply warped products and singular twisted products. Finally, several examples are…
In this paper, we study and classify singular minimal translation surfaces in a Euclidean space of dimension 3 endowed with a certain semi-symmetric (non-)metric connection.
We prove that the introduction of the class of geometrically atomic bundle maps by Harvey and Lawson in their theory of singular connections is not necessary because an arbitrary map satisfies the conditions of geometric atomicity.
We give a simple direct proof of uniqueness of tangent cones for singular projectively Hermitian Yang-Mills connections on reflexive sheaves at isolated singularities modelled on $μ$-polystable holomorphic bundles over $\mathbf{P}^{n-1}$.
In this paper, we introduce semi-symmetric metric Koszul forms and semi-symmetric non-metric Koszul forms on singular semi-Riemannian manifolds. Semi-symmetric metric Koszul forms and semi-symmetric non-metric Koszul forms and their curvature of semi-regular warped products are expressed in terms of those of the factor manifolds. We also introduce Koszul forms associated to the almost product structure on singular almost product semi-Riemannian manifolds. Koszul forms associated to the almost product structure and their curvature of semi-regular almost product warped products are expressed in …
This thesis studies moduli spaces of singular connections on 3-manifolds and manifolds with cylindrical ends. A Chern-Simons functional is defined for singular connections on 3-manifolds which are singular along a knot. The critical points of that Chern-Simons functional are flat singular connections. The Hodge-de Rham theory of singular flat connections is presented, yielding a topological condition for determining when a singular flat connection is isolated. Finally, moduli spaces of anti-self-dual singular connections are investigated on manifolds with cylindrical ends. The main analytical …
We construct local examples of singular Hermitian Yang-Mills connections over $B_1\subset \mathbb{C}^3$ with uniformly bounded $L^2$-energy, but the number of essential singular points can be arbitrarily large.
In the present paper, we discuss the singular minimal surfaces in a Euclidean 3-space R^{3} which are minimal. In fact, such a surface is nothing but a plane, a trivial outcome. However, a non-trivial outcome is obtained when we modify the usual condition of singular minimality by using a special semi-symmetric metric connection instead of the Levi-Civita connection on R^{3}. With this new connection, we prove that, besides planes, the singular minimal surfaces which are minimal are the generalized cylinders, providing their explicit equations. A trivial outcome is observed when we use a speci…
We provide a complete classification of hexagonal singular 3-web germs in the complex plane, satisfying the following two conditions: 1) the Chern connection remains holomorphic at the singular point, 2) the web admits at least one infinitesimal symmetry at this point. As a by-product, a classification of hexagonal weighted homogeneous 3-webs is obtained.
In dimension 7, we establish a Fredholm theory for a Dirac-type operator associated to a connection with point singularities. There are two applications. $1$. over a closed 7-manifold, under some natural conditions, a $G_{2}-$instanton and its point singularities can still be "seen" when the $G_{2}-$structure is properly perturbed. $2$. over a ball in $\R^{7}$, for any almost-Euclidean $G_{2}-$structure, there exists a $G_{2}-$monopole asymptotic to an arbitrary Hermitian Yang-Mills connection on $S^{6}$.
Let $M$ be an even-dimensional, oriented closed manifold. We show that the restriction of a singular Riemannian flow on $M$ to a small tubular neighborhood of each connected component of its singular stratum is foliated-diffeomorphic to an isometric flow on the same neighborhood. We then prove a formula that computes characteristic numbers of $M$ as the sum of residues associated to the infinitesimal foliation at the components of the singular stratum of the flow.
We give an example of a homogeneous reflexive sheaf over $\mathbb{C}^3$ which admits a non-conical Hermitian Yang-Mills connection. This is expected to model bubbling phenomenon along complex codimension 2 submanifolds when the Fueter section takes zero value.
We prove that the pullback of the SU(n)-soliton of Chern class $c_2=1$ over $\mathbb S^4$ via the radial projection $π:\mathbb B^5\setminus\{0\}\to\mathbb S^4$ minimizes the Yang-Mills energy under the fixed boundary trace constraint. In particular this shows that stationary Yang-Mills connections in high dimension can have singular sets of codimension 5.
We prove the Chern-Weil formula for SU(n+1)-singular connections over the complement of an embedded oriented surface in smooth four manifolds. The expression of the representation of a number as a sum of nonvanishing squares is given in terms of the representations of a number as a sum of squares. Using the number theory result, we study the irreducible SU(n+1)-representations of the fundamental group of the complement of an embedded oriented surface in smooth four manifolds.
Partial connections are (singular) differential systems generalizing classical connections on principal bundles, yielding analogous decompositions for manifolds with nonfree group actions. Connection forms are interpreted as maps determining projections of the tangent bundle onto the partial connection; this approach eliminates many of the complications arising from the presence of isotropy. A connection form taking values in the dual of the Lie algebra is smooth even at singular points of the action, while analogs of the classical algebra-valued connection form are necessarily discontinuous a…
A meromorphic connection on the complex projective line induces formal connections at each singular point, and these formal connections constitute the local behavior at the singularities. In this primarily expository paper, we discuss the extent to which specified local behavior at singular points determines the global connection. In particular, given a finite set of points and a collection of ``formal types'' at these points, does there exist a moduli space of meromorphic connections with this local behavior, and if so, when is this moduli space nonempty or a singleton? In this paper, we disc…
The classical additive Deligne-Simpson problem is the existence problem for Fuchsian connections with residues at the singular points in specified adjoint orbits. Crawley-Boevey found the solution in 2003 by reinterpreting the problem in terms of quiver varieties. A more general version of this problem, solved by Hiroe, allows additional unramified irregular singularities. We apply the theory of fundamental and regular strata due to Bremer and Sage to formulate a version of the Deligne-Simpson problem in which certain ramified singularities are allowed. These allowed singular points are called…
This is the first step in an attempt at a deformation theory for $G_{2}-$instantons with $1-$dimensional conic singularities. Under a set of model data, the linearization yields a self-adjoint first order elliptic operator $P$ on a certain bundle over $\mathbb{S}^{5}$. As a dimension reduction, the operator $P$ also arises from Hermitian Yang-Mills connections with isolated conic singularities on a Calabi-Yau $3$-fold. Using the Quaternion structure in the Sasakian geometry of $\mathbb{S}^{5}$, we describe the set of all eigenvalues of $P$ (denoted by $Spec P$). We show that $SpecP$ consists o…
Let $Σ$ be a closed surface, $G$ a compact Lie group, not necessarily connected, with Lie algebra $g$, endowed with an adjoint action invariant scalar product, let $ξ\colon P \to Σ$ be a principal $G$-bundle, and pick a Riemannian metric and orientation on $Σ$ so that the corresponding Yang-Mills equations are defined. In an earlier paper we determined the local structure of the moduli space $N(ξ)$ of central Yang-Mills connections on $ξ$ near an arbitrary point. Here we show that the decomposition of $N(ξ)$ into connected components of orbit types of central Yang-Mills connections is a strati…
Let $Σ$ be a closed surface, $G$ a compact Lie group, not necessarily connected, with Lie algebra $g$, endowed with an adjoint action invariant scalar product, let $ξ\colon P \to Σ$ be a principal $G$-bundle, and pick a Riemannian metric and orientation on $Σ$, so that the corresponding Yang-Mills equations $$d_A*K_A = 0$$ are defined, where $K_A$ refers to the curvature of a connection $A$. For every central Yang-Mills connection $A$, the data induce a structure of unitary representation of the stabilizer $Z_A$ on the first cohomology group $\roman H^1_A(Σ,\roman{ad}(ξ))$ with coefficients in…
We compute the characteristic Cartan connection associated with a system of third order ODEs. Our connection is different from Tanaka normal one, but still is uniquely associated with the system of third order ODEs. This allows us to find all fundamental invariants of a system of third order ODEs and, in particular, determine when a system of third order ODEs is trivializable. As application differential invariants of equations on circles in ${\mathbb R}^n$ are computed.
The characteristic forms in the bundle of connections of a principal bundle P over M determine the characteristic classes of P for degree less or equal to the dimension of M, and differential forms on the space of connections for higher degree. The equivariant characteristic classes provide canonical equivariant extensions of this forms, and so cohomology classes in the quotient space of connections modulo gauge transformations. More generally, given a closed differential form in M and a characteristic form, we obtain a cohomology class in the space of connections modulo gauge transformations,…
Any 7-dimensional cocalibrated G_2-manifold admits a unique connection $\nabla$ with skew symmetric torsion. We study these manifolds under the additional condition that the $\nabla$-Ricci tensor vanishes. In particular, we describe their geometry in case of a maximal number of $\nabla$-parallel vector fields.
In this note we clarify the relevance of ``connections up to homotopy'' to the theory of characteristic classes. We have already remarked \cite{Crai} that such connections up to homotopy can be used to compute the classical Chern characters. Here we present a slightly different argument for this, and then proceed with the discussion of the flat (secondary) characteristic classes. As an application, we clarify the relation between the two different approaches to characteristic classes of algebroids (and of Poisson manifolds in particular): we explain that the intrinsic characteristic classes ar…
We give an explicit description, in terms of bracket, anchor, and pairing, of the standard cochain complex associated to a Courant algebroid. In this formulation, the differential satisfies a formula that is formally identical to the Cartan formula for the de Rham differential. This perspective allows us to develop the theory of Courant algebroid connections in a way that mirrors the classical theory of connections. Using a special class of connections, we construct secondary characteristic classes associated to any Courant algebroid.
