In the present paper, we discuss the singular minimal surfaces in a Euclidean 3-space R^{3} which are minimal. In fact, such a surface is nothing but a plane, a trivial outcome. However, a non-trivial outcome is obtained when we modify the usual condition of singular minimality by using a special semi-symmetric metric connection instead of the Levi-Civita connection on R^{3}. With this new connection, we prove that, besides planes, the singular minimal surfaces which are minimal are the generalized cylinders, providing their explicit equations. A trivial outcome is observed when we use a special semi-symmetric non-metric connection. Furthermore, our discussion is adapted to the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space.
In this paper, we study and classify singular minimal translation surfaces in a Euclidean space of dimension 3 endowed with a certain semi-symmetric (non-)metric connection.
In the 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space we prove that the sign of the Gaussian curvature of any timelike minimal surface is determined by the degeneracy and the orientations of the two null curves that generate the surface. Moreover, we also investigate the behavior of the Gaussian curvature near singular points of a timelike minimal surface which admits some kind of singular points.
In this paper we give two examples of sequences of embedded minimal planar domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which converge to singular laminations of $\mathbb{R}^3$. In contrast with the situation for embedded minimal disks, these examples do not arise from complete embedded minimal planar domains and highlight some of the subtleties inherent in understanding refined properties of embedded minimal planar domains.
In this paper we provide a Weierstrass representation formula for translating solitons and singular minimal surfaces in ${\mathbb{R}^3}$. As application we study when the euclidean Gauss map has a harmonic argument and solve a general Cauchy problem in this class of surfaces.
Let $Ω\subset\r^n$ be a bounded mean convex domain. If $α<0$, we prove the existence and uniqueness of classical solutions of the Dirichlet problem in $Ω$ for the $α$-singular minimal surface equation with arbitrary continuous boundary data.
We apply the local removable singularity theorem for minimal laminations and the local picture theorem on the scale of topology to obtain two descriptive results for certain possibly singular minimal laminations of $\mathbb{R}^3$. These two global structure theorems will be applied in forthcoming papers to obtain bounds on the index and the number of ends of complete, embedded minimal surfaces of fixed genus and finite topology in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and to prove that a complete, embedded minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite genus and a countable number of ends is proper.
This is Part 1 of two papers where we develop the basic potential theory of elliptic operators on posssibly singular almost minimzers using their hyperbolic unfoldings. We can establish surprisingly robust boundary Harnack inequalities along the singular set. We apply them to derive a Martin theory and solve classical boundary value problems and we also consider eigenvalue problems and variational problems on such singular spaces.
We consider smoothings of a complex surface with singularities of class T and no nontrivial holomorphic vector field. Under an hypothesis of non degeneracy of the smoothing at each singular point, we prove that if the singular surface admits an extremal metric, then the smoothings also admit extremal metrics in nearby Kähler classes. In addition, we construct small Lagrangian stationary spheres which represent Lagrangian vanishing cycles for surfaces close to the singular one.
In this paper, we investigate surfaces in singular semi-Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{0,2,1}$ endowed with a degenerate metric. We define $d$-minimal surfaces, and give a representation formula of Weierstrass type. Moreover, we prove that $d$-minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{0,2,1}$ and spacelike flat zero mean curvature (ZMC) surfaces in four-dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{4}_{1}$ are in one-to-one correspondence.
In this short note we extend an estimate due to J. Simons on the first stability eigenvalue of minimal hypersurfaces in spheres to the singular setting. Specifically, we show that any singular minimal hypersurface in $S^{n+1}$, which is not totally geodesic and satisfies the α-structural hypothesis, has first stability eigenvalue at most -2n, with equality if and only if it is a product of two round spheres. The equality case was settled independently in the classical setting by Wu and Perdomo.
In this paper we develop methods to extend the minimal hypersurface approach to positive scalar curvature problems to all dimensions. This includes a proof of the positive mass theorem in all dimensions without a spin assumption. It also includes statements about the structure of compact manifolds of positive scalar curvature extending the work of \cite{sy1} to all dimensions. The technical work in this paper is to construct minimal slicings and associated weight functions in the presence of small singular sets and to show that the singular sets do not become too large in the lower dimensional…
In this paper, we consider the problem of finding the hypersurface M^n in the Euclidean (n+1)-space R^{n+1} that satisfies an equation of mean curvature type, called singular minimal hypersurface equation. Such an equation physically characterizes the hypersurfaces in the upper halfspace (R^{n+1})_{+} with lowest gravity center, for a fixed unit vector u in R^{n+1} . We first state that a singular minimal cylinder M^n in R^{n+1} is either a hyperplane or a α-catenary cylinder. It is also shown that this result remains true when M^n is a translation hypersurface and u a horizantal vector. As a …
We study of the shape of a compact singular minimal surface in terms of the geometry of its boundary, asking what type of {\it a priori} information can be obtained on the surface from the knowledge of its boundary. We derive estimates of the area and the height in terms of the boundary. In case that the boundary is a circle, we study under what conditions the surface is rotational. Finally, we deduce non-existence results when the boundary is formed by two curves that are sufficiently far apart.
Given two points on a soup can or conical cup with lid, we find and classify all paths of minimal length connecting them. When the number of minimal paths is finite, there are at most four on a can and three on a cup. At worst, minimal paths are piece-wise smooth with three components, each of which is a classical geodesic. Minimal paths are geodesics in the sense of Banchoff.
On any compact Riemann surface there always exists a singular non-CSC (constant scalar curvature) extremal K$\ddot{a}$hler metric which is called a non-CSC HCMU (the Hessian of the Curvature of the Metric is Umbilical) metric. In this paper, by moving frames, we show that any non-CSC HCMU metric can not be isometrically minimal immersed into 3-dimensional real space forms even locally. In general, any non-CSC HCMU metric can not be isometrically immersed into 3-dimensional real space forms with constant mean curvature (CMC).
We adapt the method of Simon [JDG '93] to prove a $C^{1,α}$-regularity theorem for minimal varifolds which resemble a cone $\bf{C}_0^2$ over an equiangular geodesic net. For varifold classes admitting a "no-hole" condition on the singular set, we additionally establish $C^{1,α}$-regularity near the cone $\bf{C}_0^2 \times \mathbb R^m$. Combined with work of Allard [Ann. of Math. '72], Simon [JDG '93], Taylor [Ann. of Math. '76], and Naber-Valtorta [Ann. of Math. '17], our result implies a $C^{1,α}$-structure for the top three strata of minimizing clusters and size-minimizing currents, and a Li…
Locally stable minimal hypersurface could have singularities in dimension $\geq 7$ in general, locally modeled on stable and area-minimizing cones in the Euclidean spaces. In this paper, we present different aspects of how these singularities may affect the local behavior of minimal hypersurfaces. First, given a non-degenerate minimal hypersurface with strictly stable and strictly minimizing tangent cone at each singular point, under any small perturbation of the metric, we show the existence of a nearby minimal hypersurface under new metric. For a generic choice of perturbation direction, we …
We study singularities and geometric properties of surfaces given by the singular loci of normal congruence of frontals with pure-frontal singular points. These surfaces consist of the normal ruled surface and focal surfaces of the initial frontal. For the normal ruled surface, we give characterizations of singularities in terms of geometric invariants of the initial frontal defined on the set of singular points. For focal surfaces, we show relation between certain singularities of them and geometric property of the given frontal. Moreover, we consider behavior of Gaussian curvature of focal s…
Fold singular points play important roles in the theory of maximal surfaces. For example, if a maximal surface admits fold singular points, it can be extended to a timelike minimal surface analytically. Moreover, there is a duality between conelike singular points and folds. In this paper, we investigate fold singular points on spacelike surfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature (spacelike CMC surfaces). We prove that spacelike CMC surfaces do not admit fold singular points. Moreover, we show that the singular point set of any conjugate CMC surface of a spacelike Delaunay surface with con…
We construct a family of instanton metric obtained from new exact singular solutions for minimal surfaces by noticing the correspondence between minimal surfaces in the three dimesional Euclidean space and gravitational instantons possessing two killing vectors. By Calabi's correspondence, we derive a family of explicit maximal surface solution for spacelike surface with zero mean curvature equation.
We shall investigate maximal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space with singularities. Although the plane is the only complete maximal surface without singular points, there are many other complete maximal surfaces with singularities and we show that they satisfy an Osserman-type inequality.
We survey some recent topics on singularities, with a focus on their connection to the minimal model program. This includes the construction and properties of dual complexes, the proof of the ACC conjecture for log canonical thresholds and the recent progress on the `local stability theory' of an arbitrary Kawamata log terminal singularity.
The paper introduces a number of new techniques to handle minimal hyersurface singularities. In particular, they allow to extend the obstruction theory for postive scalr curvature to any dimension.
We construct singular solutions to special Lagrangian equa- tions with subcritical phases and minimal surface systems. A priori estimate breaking families of smooth solutions are also produced cor- respondingly. A priori estimates for special Lagrangian equations with certain convexity are largely known by now.
We prove the two theorems of the title, settling two long standing questions in the local theory of singular minimal hypersurfaces. The sharpness of either result is with respect to its hypothesis on the size of the allowable singular sets. The proofs of both theorems rely heavily on the author's recent regularity and compactness theory for stable minimal hypersurfaces, and on earlier work of Ilmanen, Simon and Solomon--White.
In continuing the study of harmonic mapping from 2-dimensional Riemannian simplicial complexes in order to construct minimal surfaces with singularity, we obtain an a-priori regularity result concerning the real analyticity of the free boundary curve. The free boundary is the singular set along which three disk-type minimal surfaces meet. Here the configuration of the singular minimal surface is obtained by a minimization of a weighted energy functional, in the spirit of J.Douglas' approach to the Plateau Problem. Using the free boundary regularity of the harmonic map, we construct a local uni…
We show that to every maximal surface with conelike singularities in Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{L}^3$ that can be locally represented as the graph of a smooth function, there exists a corresponding timelike minimal surface in $\mathbb{L}^3$. There exists a linear transformation between such a maximal surface and its corresponding timelike minimal surface and it maps the singularities of one to the singularities of the other. Moreover, this transformation establishes a one-one correspondence between such maximal surfaces and timelike minimal surfaces and also preserves the one-one propert…
In this paper, we study the singularities of spacelike constant mean curvature one (CMC 1) surfaces in the de Sitter 3-space. We prove the duality between generalized conelike singular points and 5/2-cuspidal edges on spacelike CMC 1 surfaces. To describe the duality between $A_{k+3}$ singularities and cuspidal $S_k$ singularities, we introduce two invariants, called the $α$-invariant and $σ$-invariant, of spacelike CMC 1 surfaces at their singular points. Moreover, we give a classification of non-degenerate singular points on spacelike CMC 1 surfaces.
We give an explicit formula for singular surfaces of revolution with prescribed unbounded mean curvature. Using it, we give conditions for singularities of that surfaces. Periodicity of that surface is also discussed.
We investigate geometric properties of surfaces given by certain formulae. In particular, we calculate the singular curvature and the limiting normal curvature of such surfaces along the set of singular points consisting of singular points of the first kind. Moreover, we study fold singular points of smooth maps.
Timelike Thomsen surfaces are timelike minimal surfaces that are also affine minimal. In this paper, we make use of both the Lorentz conformal coordinates and the null coordinates, and their respective representation theorems of timelike minimal surfaces, to obtain a complete global classification of these surfaces and to characterize them using a geometric invariant called lightlike curvatures. As a result, we reveal the relationship between timelike Thomsen surfaces, and timelike minimal surfaces with planar curvature lines. As an application, we give a deformation of null curves preserving …
We introduce a combinatorial argument to study closed minimal hypersurfaces of bounded area and high Morse index. Let $(M^{n+1},g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold and $Σ\subset M$ be a closed embedded minimal hypersurface with area at most $A>0$ and with a singular set of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-7$. We show the following bounds: there is $C_A>0$ depending only on $n$, $g$, and $A$ so that $$\sum_{i=0}^n b^i(Σ) \leq C_A \big(1+index(Σ)\big) \quad \text{ if $3\leq n+1\leq 7$},$$ $$\mathcal{H}^{n-7}\big(Sing(Σ)\big) \leq C_A \big(1+index(Σ)\big)^{7/n} \quad \text{ if $n+1\geq 8$},$$ where…
This paper investigates the hanging chain problem in the simply isotropic plane as well as its 2-dimensional analog in the simply isotropic space. The simply isotropic plane and space are two- and three-dimensional geometries equipped with a degenerate metric whose kernel has dimension 1. Although the metric is degenerate, the hanging chain and hanging surface problems are well-posed if we employ the relative arc length and relative area to measure the weight. Here, the concepts of relative arc length and relative area emerge by seeing the simply isotropic geometry as a relative geometry. In a…
We prove the existence of a minimal diffeomorphism isotopic to the identity between two hyperbolic cone surfaces $(Σ,g_1)$ and $(Σ,g_2)$ when the cone angles of $g_1$ and $g_2$ are different and smaller than $π$. When the cone angles of $g_1$ are strictly smaller than the ones of $g_2$, this minimal diffeomorphism is unique.
The present paper describes a way to relate Martin boundaries on spaces of varying topology. This enables us to approach some detailed inductive analysis of the eigenfunctions of conformal Laplacians on minimal hypersurfaces near their singularities. This can directly be used resp. translated to understand the way how such minimal hypersurfaces inherit positive scalar curvature from their ambience resp. how to smooth singular minimal hypersurfaces to regular hypersurfaces with positive mean curvature.
We study knots in $\mathbb{S}^3$ obtained by the intersection of a minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with a small 3-sphere centered at a branch point. We construct examples of new minimal knots. In particular we show the existence of non-fibered minimal knots. We show that simple minimal knots are either reversible or fully amphicheiral; this yields an obstruction for a given knot to be an iterated knot of a minimal surface. Properties and invariants of these knots such as the algebraic crossing number of a braid representative and the Alexander polynomial are studied.
With respect to a $C^{\infty}$ metric which is close to the standard Euclidean metric on $\mathbb{R}^{N+1+\ell}$, where $N\ge 7$ and $\ell\ge 1$ are given, we construct a class of embedded $(N+\ell)$-dimensional hypersurfaces (without boundary) which are minimal and strictly stable, and which have singular set equal to an arbitrary preassigned closed subset $K\subset\{0\}\times\mathbb{R}^{\ell}$.
We study minimal surfaces in generic sub-Riemannian manifolds with sub-Riemannian structures of co-rank one. These surfaces can be defined as the critical points of the so-called {\it horizontal} area functional associated to the canonical {\it horizontal} area form. We derive the intrinsic equation in the general case and then consider in greater detail 2-dimensional surfaces in contact manifolds of dimension 3. We show that in this case minimal surfaces are projections of a special class of 2-dimensional surfaces in the horizontal spherical bundle over the base manifold. Generic singularitie…
We prove that there does not exist global-in-time axisymmetric solutions to the time-like minimal submanifold system in Minkowski space. We further analyze the limiting geometry as the maximal time of existence is approached.
We study minimal energy problems for strongly singular Riesz kernels on a manifold. Based on the spatial energy of harmonic double layer potentials, we are motivated to formulate the natural regularization of such problems by switching to Hadamard's partie finie integral operator which defines a strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator on the manifold. The measures with finite energy are shown to be elements from the corresponding Sobolev space, and the associated minimal energy problem admits a unique solution. We relate our continuous approach also to the discrete one, which has been wo…
We show that for a generic $8$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature, there exists a smooth minimal hypersurface. Without the curvature condition, we show that for a dense set of 8-dimensional Riemannian metrics there exists a minimal hypersurface with at most one singular point. This extends previous work on generic regularity that only dealt with area-minimizing hypersurfaces. These results are a consequence of a more general estimate for a one-parameter min-max minimal hypersurface $Σ\subset (M,g)$ (valid in any dimension): $$\mathcal H^{0} (\mathcal{S}_{nm}(Σ)) +{\r…
By employing the method of moving planes in a novel way we extend some classical symmetry and rigidity results for smooth minimal surfaces to surfaces that have singularities of the sort typically observed in soap films.
We prove some epsilon regularity results for n-dimensional minimal two-valued Lipschitz graphs. The main theorems imply uniqueness of tangent cones and regularity of the singular set in a neighbourhood of any point at which at least one tangent cone is equal to a pair of transversely intersecting multiplicity one n-dimensional planes, and in a neighbourhood of any point at which at which at least one tangent cone is equal to a union of four distinct multiplicity one n-dimensional half-planes that meet along an (n-1) - dimensional axis. The key ingredient is a new Excess Improvement Lemma obtai…
We study global log canonical thresholds of cubic surfaces with canonical singularities, and we prove the existence of a Kahler-Einstein metric on two singular cubic surfaces.
