We compute the Chern-Simons transgressed forms of some modularly invariant characteristic forms, which are related to the elliptic genera. We study the modularity properties of these secondary characteristic forms and the relations among them. We also compute the Chern-Simons forms of some vector bundles over free loop space.
This is the sequel of the first part math.DG/0611281. Here, the procedure of transgressing the families index theorem (the so-called $η$-form) is adapted to take in account the case of Dirac type operators with kernels of varying dimension. The constructed form is then used to define the direct image under proper submersions of the ``free multiplicative'' $K$-theory which was defined in the first part, the behaviour of the characteristic classes on free multiplicative $K$-theory under submersion is studied. Some universal caracterisation of the forms is provided. Finally, combining our result …
This paper contains the constructions of a real manifold version of relative K-theory, and of an extension of Karoubi's multiplicative K-theory suggested by U. Bunke (which I call ``free multiplicative K-theory'' in the sequel). Chern-Simons-Nadel type classes on relative K-theory are constructed, while it is proved that on free multiplicative K-theory, there is a notion of Chern-Weil character form, and of a Borel-type characteristic class (which is a differential form modulo exact forms) which recovers the classes $c_k$ of flat vector bundles studied by Bismut and Lott. Finally, a direct ima…
We compute the transgressed forms of some modularly invariant characteristic forms, which are related to the twisted elliptic genera. We study the modularity properties of these secondary characteristic forms and relations among them. We also get some twisted anomaly cancellation formulas on some odd dimensional manifolds.
We formulate and prove a formula for transgressing characteristic forms in general associated bundles following a method of Chern. As applications, we derive D. Johnson's explicit formula for such general transgression and Chern's first transgression formula for the Euler class.
The first part of this text is a gentle exposition of some basic constructions and results in the extended prequantum theory of Chern-Simons-type gauge field theories. We explain in some detail how the action functional of ordinary 3d Chern-Simons theory is naturally localized ("extended", "multi-tiered") to a map on the universal moduli stack of principal connections, a map that itself modulates a circle-principal 3-connection on that moduli stack, and how the iterated transgressions of this extended Lagrangian unify the action functional with its prequantum bundle and with the WZW-functional…
We propose a generalization of the Hodge $dd_c$-lemma to the case of hyperkähler manifolds. As an application of this result we derive the global construction of the fourth order transgression of the Chern character forms of hyperholomorphic bundles over compact hyperkähler manifolds. At the second part of the paper we consider the fourth order transgression for the infinite dimensional bundle arising from local families of hyperkähler manifolds. We propose a local construction of the fourth order transgression of the Chern character form. We derive an explicit expression for arising hypertors…
We present a general framework for obtaining currential double transgression formulas on complex manifolds which can be seen as manifestations of Bott-Chern Duality. These results complement on one hand the simple transgression formulas obtained by Harvey -Lawson and on the other hand the double transgression formulas of Bismut-Gillet-Soulé. Among the applications we mention a Gysin isomorphism for Bott-Chern cohomology, an abstract Poincaré-Lelong formula for sections of holomorphic and Hermitian vector bundles implying Andersson's generalization of the standard Poincaré-Lelong, a Bott-Chern …
We show that the universal odd Chern form, defined on the stable unitary group $U$, extends to the loop group $LU$ in a way that is closed with respect to an equivariant-type differential. This provides an odd analogue to the Bismut-Chern form. We also describe the associated transgression form, the so-called Bismut-Chern-Simons form, and explicate some properties it inherits as a differential form on the space of maps of a cylinder into the stable unitary group. As a corollary, we obtain the Chern character homomorphism from odd K-theory to the periodic cohomology of the free loop space, repr…
We generalize some of the results of Harvey, Lawson and Latschev about transgression formulas. The focus here is on flowing forms via vertical vector fields, especially Morse-Bott-Smale vector fields. We prove a very general transgression formula including also a version covering non-compact situations. Among applications, we completely answer a question of Quillen, construct the Maslov spark, give a very short proof of a refined Chern- Gauss-Bonnet theorem, and reprove some theorems of Nicolaescu and Getzler. A discussion about odd Chern-Weil theory is also included.
We generalize the transgression formula for the eta form of Bismut, Cheeger and Berline, Getzler, Vergne for vertical Dirac operators on a fibre bundle with odd dimensional fibres where the Dirac operators have locally at most one eigenvalue of multiplicity one crossing zero transversally.
This note announces a general construction of characteristic currents for singular connections on a vector bundle. It develops, in particular, a Chern-Weil-Simons theory for smooth bundle maps $α: E \rightarrow F$ which, for smooth connections on $E$ and $F$, establishes formulas of the type $$ ϕ\ = \ \text{\rm Res}_ϕΣ_α + dT. $$ Here $ϕ$ is a standard charactersitic form, $\text{Res}_ϕ$ is an associated smooth ``residue'' form computed canonically in terms of curvature, $Σ_α$ is a rectifiable current depending only on the singular structure of $α$, and $T$ is a canonical, functorial transgres…
For a smooth family F of admissible elliptic pseudodifferential operators with differential form coefficients associated to a geometric fibration of manifolds M--> B we show that there is a natural zeta-form z(F,s) and zeta-determinant- form det(F) in the de-Rham algebra of smooth differential forms, generalizing the classical single operator spectral zeta function and determinant. In the case where F is the curvature of a superconnection the zeta form is exact, extending to families the Atiyah-Bott-Seeley zeta function formula for the pointwise index, and equivalent to the transgression formu…
We introduce certain relative differential characters which we call Cheeger-Chern-Simons characters. These combine the well-known Cheeger-Simons characters with Chern-Simons forms. In the same way as the Cheeger-Simons characters generalize Chern-Simons invariants of oriented closed manifolds, the Cheeger-Chern-Simons characters generalize Chern-Simons invariants of oriented manifolds with boundary. Using Cheeger-Chern-Simons characters, we introduce the notion of differential trivializations of universal characteristic classes. Specializing to the class 1/2 $p_1 \in H^4(B\mathrm{Spin}_n;\math…
We review the caloron correspondence between $G$-bundles on $M \times S^1$ and $ΩG$-bundles on $M$, where $ΩG$ is the space of smooth loops in the compact Lie group $G$. We use the caloron correspondence to define characteristic classes for $ΩG$-bundles, called string classes, by transgression of characteristic classes of $G$-bundles. These generalise the string class of Killingback to higher dimensional cohomology.
The Chern-Simons forms for R-linear connections on Lie algebroids are considered. A generalized Chern-Simons formula for such R-linear connections is obtained. We it apply to define Chern character and secondary characteristic classes for R-linear connections of Lie algebroids.
In the late 1980s Witten used the Chern-Simons form of a connection to construct new invariants of 3-manifolds and knots, recovering in particular the Jones invariants. Since then the associated topological quantum field theory (TQFT) has served as a key example in understanding the structure of TQFTs in general. We survey some of that structure with a particular focus on the "multi-tier" aspects. We discuss general axioms, generators-and-relations theorems, a priori constructions, dimensional reduction and K-theory, and Chern-Simons as a 0-1-2-3 theory. An appendix gives a lightening treatmen…
We prove several abstract versions of the Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality for an analytic functional on a Banach space that generalize previous abstract versions of this inequality, weakening their hypotheses and, in particular, the well-known infinite-dimensional version of the gradient inequality due to Lojasiewicz proved by Simon (1983). We also prove that the optimal exponent of the Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality is obtained when the functional is Morse-Bott, improving on similar results due to Chill (2003, 2006), Haraux and Jendoubi (2007), and Simon (1996). In our article ar…
