We classify all minimal models X of dimension n, Kodaira dimension n-1 and with vanishing Chern number $c_1^{n-2}c_2(X)=0$. This solves a problem of Kollár.
Completing previous work of Kollár and Grassi, we also show that there is a universal constant $ε>0$ such that any minimal threefold satisfies either $c_1c_2=0$ or $-c_1c_2>ε$. This settles completely a conjecture of Kollár.
We prove the existence of rigid compact complex surfaces of general type whose Chern slopes are arbitrarily close to the Bogomolov--Miyaoka--Yau bound of $3$. In addition, each of these surfaces has first Betti number equal to $4$.
The Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality asserts that the Chern numbers of a surface X of general type in characteristic 0 satisfy the inequality c_1^2 <= 3c_2, a consequence of which is (K_X^2)/chi(O_X) <= 9. This inequality fails in characteristic p, and here we produce infinite families of counterexamples for large p. Our method parallels a construction of Hirzebruch, and relies on a construction of abelian covers due to Catanese and Pardini.
The aim of this paper is to consider a possible extension of the Bogomolov--Miyaoka--Yau inequality to differentiable orbifolds. The conjectured extension is related to the Montgomery--Yang problem about circle actions on the 5--sphere and also to the H--cobordism of Seifert fibered 3--manifolds. Related conjectures on algebraic surfaces with quotient singularities which have the same rational homology as the projective plane are also considered. Finally we give such examples which are birational to the projective plane yet have ample canonical class.
A generalized Kummer surface $X=Km(T,G)$ is the resolution of a quotient of a torus $T$ by a finite group of symplectic automorphisms $G$. We complete the classification of generalized Kummer surfaces by studying the two last groups which have not been yet studied. For these surfaces, we compute the associated Kummer lattice $K_{G}$, which is the minimal primitive sub-lattice containing the exceptional curves of the resolution $X\to T/G$. We then prove that a K3 surface is a generalised Kummer surface of type $Km(T,G)$ if and only if its Néron-Severi group contains $K_{G}$. For smooth-orbifold…
In this paper, we prove the Miyaoka-Yau inequality for compact Kähler manifolds with semi-positive canonical bundle. The key point of the proof is the estimate for the $L^2$-norm of the scalar curvature along the Kähler-Ricci flow.
Using Langer's variation on the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality \cite[Theorem 0.1]{Langer} we provide some Hirzebruch-type inequalities for curve arrangements in the complex projective plane.
We establish the Miyaoka-Yau inequality in terms of orbifold Chern classes for the tangent sheaf of any complex projective variety of general type with klt singularities and nef canonical divisor. In case equality is attained for a variety with at worst terminal singularities, we prove that the associated canonical model is the quotient of the unit ball by a discrete group action.
For a minimal smooth projective surface $S$ of general type over a field of characteristic $p>0$, we prove that $K^2_S\le 32χ(\cal{O}_S).$ Moreover, if $18χ(\cal{O}_S)<K^2_S\le 32χ(\cal{O}_S)$, Albanese morphism of $S$ must induces a genus two fiberation. A classification of surfaces with $K^2_S=32χ(\cal{O}_S)$ is also given. The inequality also implies $χ(\cal{O}_S)>0$, which answers completely a question of Shepherd-Barron.
We give a simplified proof (in characteristic zero) of the decomposition theorem for complex projective varieties with klt singularities and numerically trivial canonical bundle. The proof rests in an essential way on most of the partial results of the previous proof obtained by many authors, but avoids those in positive characteristic by S. Druel. The single to some extent new contribution is an algebraicity and bimeromorphic splitting result for generically locally trivial fibrations with fibres without holomorphic vector fields. We give first the proof in the easier smooth case, following t…

After establishing suitable notions of stability and Chern classes for singular pairs, we use Kähler-Einstein metrics with conical and cuspidal singularities to prove the slope semistability of orbifold tangent sheaves of minimal log-canonical pairs of log general type. We then proceed to prove the Miyaoka-Yau inequality for all minimal pairs with standard coefficients. Our result in particular provides an alternative proof of the Abundance theorem for threefolds that is independent of positivity results for tangent sheaves.
The conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker (BG) type inequality for tilt semistable objects on projective 3-folds was proposed by Bayer, Macri and the author. In this note, we prove our conjecture for slope stable sheaves with the smallest first Chern class on certain Calabi-Yau 3-folds, e.g. quintic 3-folds.
We prove a Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for the third Chern characters of stable sheaves on Calabi-Yau 3-folds and a large class of Fano 3-folds with given rank and first and second Chern classes. The proof uses the spreading-out technique, vanishings from the tilt-stability conditions, and Langer's estimation theorem of the global sections of torsion free sheaves. In particular, the result implies that the conjectural sufficient conditions on the Chern numbers for the existence of stable sheaves on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold by Douglas-Reinbacher-Yau needs to be modified.
We introduce orbifold Euler numbers for normal surfaces with Q-divisors. These numbers behave multiplicatively under finite maps and in the log canonical case we prove that they satisfy the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau type inequality. As a corollary we prove effective versions of Bogomolov's result on boundedness of rational curves in some surfaces of general type. Finally, we give some applications to singularities of plane curves.

Using Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality and a Milnor number bound we prove that any algebraic annulus $\mathbb{C}^*$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with no self-intersections can have at most three cuspidal singularities.
We classify toric log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one by introducing the notion, cascades. As an application, we show that if such a surface is Kähler-Einstein, then it should admit a special cascade, and it satisfies the equality of the orbifold Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality, i.e., $K^2 = 3e_{orb}.$

We discuss conjectures following from the attractor mechanism in type II string theory about the possible Chern classes of stable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular, we give sufficient conditions for Chern classes to correspond to stable bundles.
This paper gives a simple example of a family of Calabi-Yaus of any dimension with canonical singularities of dimension one, whose Kuranishi space is singular. Thus the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov unobstructedness theorem is not true for Calabi-Yaus with canonical singularities.
It is known that projective minimal models satisfy the celebrated Miyaoka-Yau inequalities. In this article, we extend these inequalities to the set of all smooth, projective and non-uniruled varieties.
We study a conjectural relationship among Donaldson-Thomas type invariants on Calabi-Yau 3-folds counting torsion sheaves supported on ample divisors, ideal sheaves of curves and Pandharipande-Thomas's stable pairs. The conjecture is a mathematical formulation of Denef-Moore's formula derived in the study of Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa's conjecture relating black hole entropy and topological string. The main result of this paper is to prove our conjecture assuming a conjectural Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality proposed by Bayer, Macri and the author.
In this paper, we prove a stronger form of the Bogomolov-Gieseker (BG) inequality for stable sheaves on two classes of Calabi-Yau threefolds, namely, weighted hypersurfaces inside the weighted projective spaces $\mathbb{P}(1, 1, 1, 1, 2)$ and $\mathbb{P}(1, 1, 1, 1, 4)$. Using the stronger BG inequality as a main technical tool, we construct open subsets in the spaces of Bridgeland stability conditions on these Calabi-Yau threefolds.
This is an extended, renovated and updated report on a joint work which the second named author presented at the Conference on Algebraic Geometry held at Saitama University, 15-17 of March, 1995. The main result is an inequality for the numerical type of singularities of a plane curve, which involves the degree of the curve, the multiplicities and the Milnor numbers of its singular points. It is a corollary of the logarithmic Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau's type inequality due to Miyaoka. It was first proven by F. Sakai at 1990 and rediscovered by the authors independently in the particular case of an…
The aim of this note is to construct sequences of vector bundles with unbounded rank and discriminant on an arbitrary algebraic surface. This problem, on principally polarized abelian varieties with cyclic Neron-Severi group generated by the polarization, was considered by Nakashima in connection with the Douglas-Reinbacher-Yau conjecture on the Strong Bogomolov Inequality. In particular we show that on any surface, the Strong Bogomolov Inequality $SBI_l$ is false for all $l>4$.
Let $X$, $D$ be a smooth projective surface and a simple normal crossing divisor on $X$, respectively. Suppose $κ(X, K_X + D)\ge 0$, let $C$ be an irreducible curve on $X$ whose support is not contained in $D$ and $α$ a rational number in $ [ 0, 1 ]$. Following Miyaoka, we define an orbibundle $\mathcal{E}_α$ as a suitable free subsheaf of log differentials on a Galois cover of $X$. Making use of $\mathcal{E}_α$ we prove a Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality for the couple $(X, D+αC)$. Suppose moreover that $K_X+D$ is big and nef and $(K_X+D)^2 $ is greater than $e_{X\setminus D}$, namely the top…
We prove that for any number $r$ in $[2,3]$, there are spin (resp. non-spin minimal) simply connected complex surfaces of general type $X$ with $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ arbitrarily close to $r$. In particular, this shows the existence of simply connected surfaces of general type arbitrarily close to the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau line. In addition, we prove that for any $r \in [1,3]$ and any integer $q\geq 0$, there are minimal complex surfaces of general type $X$ with $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ arbitrarily close to $r$, and $π_1(X)$ isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface of genus $q$.
In this paper, we prove a Clifford type inequality for the curve $X_{2,2,2,4}$, which is the intersection of a quartic and three general quadratics in $\mathbb{P}^5$. We thus prove a stronger Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for characters of stable vector bundles and stable objects on $X_{2,4}$. Applying the scheme proposed by Bayer, Bertram, Macrì, Stellari and Toda, we can construct an open subset of Bridgeland stability conditions on $X_{2,4}$.
If $X$ is a smooth complex projective 3-fold with ample canonical divisor $K$, then the inequality $K^3\ge {2/3}(2p_g-7)$ holds, where $p_g$ denotes the geometric genus. This inequality is nearly sharp. We also give similar, but more complicated, inequalities for general minimal 3-folds of general type. (A noether type of inequality lies, by all means, on the other side of the Miyaoka-Yau inequality from the geographical point of view.)
In this paper we partly extend the Beauville-Bogomolov decomposition theorem to the singular setting. We show that any complex projective variety of dimension at most five with canonical singularities and numerically trivial canonical class admits a finite cover, étale in codimension one, that decomposes as a product of an Abelian variety, and singular analogues of irreducible Calabi-Yau and irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties.
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, and let $C$ be a nonsingular projective curve over $\mathbb{K}$. We prove that for any real number $x \geq 2$, there are minimal surfaces of general type $X$ over $\mathbb{K}$ such that a) $c_1^2(X)>0, c_2(X)>0$, b) $π_1^{\text{ét}}(X) \simeq π_1^{\text{ét}}(C)$, c) and $c_1^2(X)/c_2(X)$ is arbitrarily close to $x$. In particular, we show density of Chern slopes in the pathological Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau interval $]3,\infty[$ for any given $p$. Moreover, we prove that for $C=\mathbb{P}^1$ there exist surfaces $X$ as abov…
Let $X$ be a Gorenstein minimal projective 3-fold with at worst locally factorial terminal singularities. Suppose the canonical map is of fiber type. Denote by $F$ a smooth model of a generic irreducible component in fibers of the canonical map of $X$ and so $F$ is a smooth curve or a smooth surface. The main result of the paper is that there is a computable constant $K$ (independent of $X$) such that $g(F)\leq 647$ or $p_g(F)\leq 38$ whenever $p_g(X)\geq K$. The method heavily relies on both a Noether type of inequality and a Miyaoka-Yau inequality and that is the reason we only treat a Goren…
In this paper we prove that given a pair $(X,D)$ of a threefold $X$ and a boundary divisor $D$ with mild singularities, if $(K_X+D)$ is movable, then the orbifold second Chern class $c_2$ of $(X,D)$ is pseudo-effective. This generalizes the classical result of Miyaoka on the pseudo-effectivity of $c_2$ for minimal models. As an application we give a simple solution to Kawamata's effective non-vanishing conjecture in dimension $3$, where we prove that $H^0(X, K_X+H)\neq 0$, whenever $K_X+H$ is nef and $H$ is an ample, effective, reduced Cartier divisor. Furthermore, we study Lang-Vojta's conjec…
This article is concerned with Chern class and Chern number inequalities on polarized manifolds and nef vector bundles. For a polarized pair $(M,L)$ with $L$ very ample, our first main result is a family of sharp Chern class inequalities. Among them the first one is a variant of a classical result and the equality case of the second one is a characterization of hypersurfaces. The second main result is a Chern number inequality on it, which includes a reverse Miyaoka-Yau type inequality. The third main result is that the Chern numbers of a nef vector bundle over a compact Kähler manifold are bo…
