The aim of this paper is to consider a possible extension of the Bogomolov--Miyaoka--Yau inequality to differentiable orbifolds. The conjectured extension is related to the Montgomery--Yang problem about circle actions on the 5--sphere and also to the H--cobordism of Seifert fibered 3--manifolds. Related conjectures on algebraic surfaces with quotient singularities which have the same rational homology as the projective plane are also considered. Finally we give such examples which are birational to the projective plane yet have ample canonical class.
We prove the existence of rigid compact complex surfaces of general type whose Chern slopes are arbitrarily close to the Bogomolov--Miyaoka--Yau bound of $3$. In addition, each of these surfaces has first Betti number equal to $4$.
We classify all minimal models X of dimension n, Kodaira dimension n-1 and with vanishing Chern number $c_1^{n-2}c_2(X)=0$. This solves a problem of Kollár. Completing previous work of Kollár and Grassi, we also show that there is a universal constant $ε>0$ such that any minimal threefold satisfies either $c_1c_2=0$ or $-c_1c_2>ε$. This settles completely a conjecture of Kollár.
A generalized Kummer surface $X=Km(T,G)$ is the resolution of a quotient of a torus $T$ by a finite group of symplectic automorphisms $G$. We complete the classification of generalized Kummer surfaces by studying the two last groups which have not been yet studied. For these surfaces, we compute the associated Kummer lattice $K_{G}$, which is the minimal primitive sub-lattice containing the exceptional curves of the resolution $X\to T/G$. We then prove that a K3 surface is a generalised Kummer surface of type $Km(T,G)$ if and only if its Néron-Severi group contains $K_{G}$. For smooth-orbifold…
In this paper, we prove the Miyaoka-Yau inequality for compact Kähler manifolds with semi-positive canonical bundle. The key point of the proof is the estimate for the $L^2$-norm of the scalar curvature along the Kähler-Ricci flow.
We establish the Miyaoka-Yau inequality in terms of orbifold Chern classes for the tangent sheaf of any complex projective variety of general type with klt singularities and nef canonical divisor. In case equality is attained for a variety with at worst terminal singularities, we prove that the associated canonical model is the quotient of the unit ball by a discrete group action.
For a minimal smooth projective surface $S$ of general type over a field of characteristic $p>0$, we prove that $K^2_S\le 32χ(\cal{O}_S).$ Moreover, if $18χ(\cal{O}_S)<K^2_S\le 32χ(\cal{O}_S)$, Albanese morphism of $S$ must induces a genus two fiberation. A classification of surfaces with $K^2_S=32χ(\cal{O}_S)$ is also given. The inequality also implies $χ(\cal{O}_S)>0$, which answers completely a question of Shepherd-Barron.
After establishing suitable notions of stability and Chern classes for singular pairs, we use Kähler-Einstein metrics with conical and cuspidal singularities to prove the slope semistability of orbifold tangent sheaves of minimal log-canonical pairs of log general type. We then proceed to prove the Miyaoka-Yau inequality for all minimal pairs with standard coefficients. Our result in particular provides an alternative proof of the Abundance theorem for threefolds that is independent of positivity results for tangent sheaves.

We give a simplified proof (in characteristic zero) of the decomposition theorem for complex projective varieties with klt singularities and numerically trivial canonical bundle. The proof rests in an essential way on most of the partial results of the previous proof obtained by many authors, but avoids those in positive characteristic by S. Druel. The single to some extent new contribution is an algebraicity and bimeromorphic splitting result for generically locally trivial fibrations with fibres without holomorphic vector fields. We give first the proof in the easier smooth case, following t…

It is known that projective minimal models satisfy the celebrated Miyaoka-Yau inequalities. In this article, we extend these inequalities to the set of all smooth, projective and non-uniruled varieties.
In this paper, we prove a stronger form of the Bogomolov-Gieseker (BG) inequality for stable sheaves on two classes of Calabi-Yau threefolds, namely, weighted hypersurfaces inside the weighted projective spaces $\mathbb{P}(1, 1, 1, 1, 2)$ and $\mathbb{P}(1, 1, 1, 1, 4)$. Using the stronger BG inequality as a main technical tool, we construct open subsets in the spaces of Bridgeland stability conditions on these Calabi-Yau threefolds.
In this paper, we prove a Clifford type inequality for the curve $X_{2,2,2,4}$, which is the intersection of a quartic and three general quadratics in $\mathbb{P}^5$. We thus prove a stronger Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for characters of stable vector bundles and stable objects on $X_{2,4}$. Applying the scheme proposed by Bayer, Bertram, Macrì, Stellari and Toda, we can construct an open subset of Bridgeland stability conditions on $X_{2,4}$.
In this paper, we first prove a Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem over projective normal varieties smooth in codimension two. As a consequence we deduce the polystability of (dual) tensor products of stable reflexive sheaves, and we give a new proof of the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality, along with a precise characterization of the case of equality. This also improves several previously known algebro-geometric results on normalized tautological classes. We study the limiting behavior of semistable bundles over a degenerating family of projective normal varieties. In the case of a family of stable…
Let $S$ be a smooth projective variety and $Δ$ a simple normal crossing $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor with coefficients in $(0,1]$. For any ample $\mathbb{Q}$-line bundle $L$ over $S$, we denote by $\mathscr{E}(L)$ the extension sheaf of the orbifold tangent sheaf $T_S(-\log(Δ))$ by the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}_S$ with the extension class $c_1(L)$. We show the following two results: (i) If $-(K_S+Δ)$ is ample and $(S, Δ)$ is K-semistable, then for any $λ\in \mathbb{Q}_{>0}$, the extension sheaf $\mathscr{E}({λc_1(-(K_S+Δ))})$ is slope semistable with respect to $-(K_S+Δ)$; (ii) If $K_S+Δ\equiv 0$, …
