We prove or conjecture several relations between the multizeta values for positive genus function fields of class number one, focusing on the zeta-like values, namely those whose ratio with the zeta value of the same weight is rational (or conjecturally equivalently algebraic). These are the first known relations between multizetas, which are not with prime field coefficients. We seem to have one universal family. We also find that interestingly the mechanism with which the relations work is quite different from the rational function field case, raising interesting questions about the expected motivic interpretation in higher genus. We provide some data in support of the guesses.
We prove and conjecture several relations between multizeta values for $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$, focusing on zeta-like values, namely those whose ratio with the zeta value of the same weight is rational (or equivalently algebraic). In particular, we describe them conjecturally fully for $q=2$, or more generally for any $q$ for `even' weight (`eulerian' tuples). We provide some data in support of the guesses.
Multizeta values in positive characteristic were first introduced and studied by Thakur. He and Lara Rodr\'ıguez discovered and conjectured certain zeta-like families. Kuan and Lin stated more conjectures about zeta-like multizeta values. In the present paper we study and give a transparent formula for certain Anderson-Thakur polynomials. Besides, we confirm the conjectured zeta-like families.
Characteristic p multizeta values were initially studied by Thakur, who defined them as analogues of classical multiple zeta values of Euler. In the present paper we establish an effective criterion for Eulerian multizeta values, which characterizes when a multizeta value is a rational multiple of a power of the Carlitz period. The resulting "t-motivic" algorithm can tell whether any given multizeta value is Eulerian or not. We also prove that if zeta_A(s_1,...,s_r) is Eulerian, then zeta_A(s_2,...,s_r) has to be Eulerian. When r=2, this was conjectured (and later on conjectured for arbitrary …
We define an elliptic generating series whose coefficients, the elliptic multizetas, are related to the elliptic analogues of multiple zeta values introduced by Enriquez as the coefficients of his elliptic associator; both sets of coefficients lie in $\mathcal{O}(\mathfrak{H})$, the ring of functions on the Poincaré upper half-plane $\mathfrak H$. The elliptic multizetas generate a $\mathbb Q$-algebra $\mathcal{E}$ which is an elliptic analogue of the algebra of multiple zeta values. Working modulo $2πi$, we show that the algebra $\mathcal{E}$ decomposes into a geometric and an arithmetic part…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of $q$ elements. In this paper, we study the vanishing behavior of multizeta values over $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ at negative integers. These values are analogs of the classical multizeta values. At negative integers, they are series of products of power sums $S_d(k)$ which are polynomials in $t$. By studying the $t$-valuation of $S_d(s)$ for $s < 0$, we show that multizeta values at negative integers vanish only at trivial zeros. The proof is inspired by the idea of Sheats in the proof of a statement of "greedy element" by Carlitz.
According to Hoffman's (2,3)-conjecture, the so-called double shuffle relations should imply that every multiple zeta value should express effectively in terms of multizetas whose entries are equal to either 2 or 3, with some explicitly computable rational coefficients. In February 2011, the existence of such Q-linear combinations was established by Francis Brown in all weights. Still, a desire exists to have effective access to these coefficients. In 2008, Masanobu Kaneko, Masayuki Noro and Ken'ichi Tsurumaki showed, up to weight 20, that in fact, double shuffle relations with first member eq…
In this paper, we study multizeta values over function fields in characteristic $p$. For each $d \geq 2$, we show that when the constant field has cardinality $> 2$, the field generated by all multizeta values of depth $d$ is of infinite transcendence degree over the field generated by all single zeta values. As a special case, this gives an affirmative answer to the function field analogue of a question of Y.\ André.
We reduce the sum $\sum_{k=1}^\infty \sum_{j=0}^{k-1} \frac{(-1)^{j+k+1}}{(2j+1)^mk}$ in terms of special values of the Dirichlet L-series in the character of conductor 4. This sum is a combination of colored zeta values.
We study relations between the multizeta values for function fields introduced by D. Thakur. The product ζ(a)ζ(b) is a linear combination of multizeta values. For q=2, a full conjectural description of how the product of two zeta values can be described as the sum of multizetas was given by Thakur. The recursion part of this recipe was generalized by the author. In this paper, the main conjecture formulated by the author, as well as some conjectures of Thakur are proved. Moreover, for general q, we prove closed formulas as well as a recursive recipe to express ζ(a)ζ(b) as a sum of multizeta va…
In this paper, we explain several conjectures about how a product of two Carlitz-Goss zeta values can be expressed as a F_p-linear combination of Thakur's multizeta values, generalizing the q=2 case dealt by D. Thakur in Relations between multizeta values for F_q[t]. In contrast to the classical sum shuffle, ζ(a)ζ(b)=ζ(a+b)+ζ(a,b)+ζ(b,a), the identities we get are much more involved. Hundreds of instances of these conjectures have been proved and we describe the proof method and the evidence.
Thakur (2010) showed that, for $r,$ $s\in \mathbb{N}$, a product of two Carlitz zeta values $ζ_A(r)$ and $ζ_A(s)$ can be expressed as an $\mathbb{F}_p$-linear combination of $ζ_A(r+s)$ and double zeta values of weight $r+s$. Such an expression is called shuffle relation by Thakur. Fixing $r,$ $s\in \mathbb{N}$, we construct a $t$-module $E'$. To determine whether an $(r+s)$-tuple $\mathfrak{C}$ in $\mathbb{F}_q(θ)^{r+s}$ gives a shuffle relation, we relate it to the $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$-torsion property of the point $\mathbf{v}_\mathfrak{C}\in E'(\mathbb{F}_q[θ])$ constructed with respect to the …
In this paper, we introduce cell-forms on $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$, which are top-dimensional differential forms diverging along the boundary of exactly one cell (connected component) of the real moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}(\mathbb{R})$. We show that the cell-forms generate the top-dimensional cohomology group of $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$, so that there is a natural duality between cells and cell-forms. In the heart of the paper, we determine an explicit basis for the subspace of differential forms which converge along a given cell $X$. The elements of this basis are called insertion forms, their int…
This report outlines a combinatorial recipe for computing the bases, whose elements are oriented polygons, of two cohomology spaces associated to multizeta values: the top dimensional de Rham cohomology of moduli spaces of genus 0 complex pointed curves and the top dimensional de Rham cohomology of certain partial compactifications of these moduli spaces.
Arborified zeta values are defined as iterated series and integrals using the universal properties of rooted trees. This approach allows to study their convergence domain and to relate them to multizeta values. Generalisations to rooted trees of the stuffle and shuffle products are defined and studied. It is further shown that arborifed zeta values are algebra morphisms for these new products on trees.
In this paper, we establish a Voronoi formula for the spinor zeta function of a Siegel cusp form of genus 2. We deduce from this formula quantitative results on the number of its positive (resp. negative) coefficients in some short intervals.
We compute in a direct (not algorithmic) way the zeta function of all supersingular curves of genus 2 over a finite field k, with many geometric automorphisms. We display these computations in an appendix where we select a family of representatives of all these curves up to geometric isomorphism and we exhibit equations and the zeta function of all their twists. As an application we obtain a direct computation of the cryptographic exponent of the Jacobians of these curves.
It is known from work of du Sautoy and Grunewald in \cite{duSG1} that the zeta functions counting subgroups of finite index in infinite nilpotent groups depend upon the behaviour of some associated system of algebraic varieties on reduction $\modp.$ Further to this, in \cite{duS3, duS4} du Sautoy constructed a group whose local zeta function was determined by the number of points on the elliptic curve $E:Y^2=X^3-X.$ In this work we generalise du Sautoy\rq s construction to define a class of groups whose local zeta functions are dependent upon the number of points on the reduction of a given el…
In any positive genus case, we show an explicit formula of the Mumford forms expressed by infinite products like Selberg type zeta values for Schottky groups. This result is considered as an extension of the formula in terms of Ramanujan's Delta function in the genus 1 case, and is especially applied to studying the rationality of Ruelle zeta values for Schottky groups.
Let $p$ be a prime, and let $Γ=\Sp_g(\Z)$ be the Siegel modular group of genus $g$. We study $p$-adic families of zeta functions and Siegel modular forms. $L$-functions of Siegel modular forms are described in terms of motivic $L$-functions attached to $\Sp_g$, and their analytic properties are given. Critical values for the spinor $L$-functions and $p$-adic constructions are discussed. Rankin's lemma of higher genus is established. A general conjecture on a lifting from $ GSp_{2m} \times GSp_{2m}$ to $GSp_{4m}$ (of genus $g=4m$) is formulated. Constructions of $p$-adic families of Siegel modu…
We study the distribution of the zeroes of the zeta functions of the family of Artin-Schreier covers of the projective line over $\mathbb{F}_q$ when $q$ is fixed and the genus goes to infinity. We consider both the global and the mesoscopic regimes, proving that when the genus goes to infinity, the number of zeroes with angles in a prescribed non-trivial subinterval of $[-π,π)$ has a standard Gaussian distribution (when properly normalized).
We determine what isogeny classes of supersingular abelian surfaces over a finite field k of characteristic 2 contain jacobians. We deal with this problem in a direct way by computing explicitly the zeta function of all supersingular curves of genus 2. Our procedure is constructive, so that we are able to exhibit curves with prescribed zeta function and to count the number of curves, up to k-isomorphism, leading to the same zeta function.
We prove some interesting multiplicative relations which hold between the coefficients of the logarithmic derivatives obtained in a few simple ways from $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear formal power series. Since the logarithmic derivatives connect power sums to elementary symmetric functions via the Newton identities, we establish, as applications, new identities between important quantities of function field arithmetic, such as the Bernoulli-Carlitz fractions and power sums as well as their multi-variable generalizations. Resulting understanding of their factorizations has arithmetic significance, as w…
For a compact Riemann surface $M$ of genus $g\ge 2$, we study the functional equations of the Selberg zeta functions attached with the Tate motives $f$. We prove that certain functional equations hold if and only if $f$ has the absolute automorphy.
In this paper, we show that half of non-zero coefficients of the spinor zeta function of a Siegel cusp form of genus 2 are positive and half are negative.
Initially motivated by the relations between Anabelian Geometry and Artin's L-functions of the associated Galois-representations, here we study the list of zeta-functions of genus two abelian coverings of elliptic curves over finite fields. Our goal is to provide a complete description of such a list.
We study the modular graph functions introduced by Green, Russo, Vanhove in the context of type II superstring scattering amplitudes of 4 gravitons on a torus. In particular we describe a method to algorithmically compute the coefficients in their expansion at the cusp in terms of conical sums. We perform explicit computations for 3-graviton functions, which naturally suggest to conjecture that only single-valued multiple zeta values appear.
Fixing $t \in \mathbb{R}$ and a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic, we give an explicit upper bound on the proportion of genus $g$ hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$ whose zeta function vanishes at $\frac{1}{2} + it$. Our upper bound is independent of $g$ and tends to $0$ as $q$ grows.
By a similar idea for the construction of Milnor's gamma functions, we introduce "higher depth determinants" of the Laplacian on a compact Riemann surface of genus greater than one. We prove that, as a generalization of the determinant expression of the Selberg zeta function, this higher depth determinant can be expressed as a product of multiple gamma functions and what we call a Milnor-Selberg zeta function. It is shown that the Milnor-Selberg zeta function admits an analytic continuation, a functional equation and, remarkably, has an Euler product.
In this PhD thesis we study holomorphic and non-holomorphic elliptic analogues of multiple zeta values, namely elliptic multiple zeta values and modular graph functions. Both classes of functions have been discovered very recently, and are involved in the computation of genus one superstring amplitudes. In particular, we obtain new results on the asymptotic expansion of these functions that allow us to perform explicit computations and point out analogies between genus zero and genus one amplitudes.
In this paper we show that in perturbative string theory the genus-one contribution to formal 2-point amplitudes can be related to the genus-zero contribution to 4-point amplitudes. This is achieved by studying special linear combinations of multiple zeta values that appear as coefficients of the amplitudes. We also exploit our results to relate closed strings to open strings at genus one using Brown's single-valued projection, proving a conjecture of Broedel, Schlotterer and the second author.
A simple geometric construction on the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ of curves of genus $0$ with $n$ ordered marked points is described which gives a common framework for many irrationality proofs for zeta values. This construction yields Apéry's approximations to $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, and for larger $n$, an infinite family of small linear forms in multiple zeta values with an interesting algebraic structure. It also contains a generalisation of the linear forms used by Ball and Rivoal to prove that infinitely many odd zeta values are irrational.
We exhibit a quantum algorithm for determining the zeta function of a genus g curve over a finite field F_q, which is polynomial in g and log(q). This amounts to giving an algorithm to produce provably random elements of the class group of a curve, plus a recipe for recovering a Weil polynomial from enough of its cyclic resultants. The latter effectivizes a result of Fried in a restricted setting.
I explain how the Lax-Phillips theory can be applied to a purely innovating time series and compute the corresponding scattering function. I then associate such a time series to an algebraic curve (of genus at least 1) over a finite field and show that the Riemann Hypothesis (proven long ago) holds if and only if the scattering is causal (this causality is not independently established, though).
We proof a Garrett-Böcherer decomposition of a vector valued Siegel Eisenstein series $E_{l,0}^2$ of genus 2 transforming with the Weil representation of $\text{Sp}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ on the group ring $\mathbb{C}[(L'/L)^2]$. We show that the standard zeta function associated to a vector valued common eigenform $f$ for the Weil representation can be meromorphically continued to the whole $s$-plane and that it satisfies a functional equation. The proof is based on an integral representation of this zeta function in terms of $f$ and $E_{l,0}^2$.
We relate the low-energy expansions of world-sheet integrals in genus-one amplitudes of open- and closed-string states. The respective expansion coefficients are elliptic multiple zeta values in the open-string case and non-holomorphic modular forms dubbed "modular graph forms" for closed strings. By inspecting the differential equations and degeneration limits of suitable generating series of genus-one integrals, we identify formal substitution rules mapping the elliptic multiple zeta values of open strings to the modular graph forms of closed strings. Based on the properties of these rules, …
We study the fluctuations in the distribution of zeros of zeta functions of a family of hyperelliptic curves defined over a fixed finite field, in the limit of large genus. According to the Riemann Hypothesis for curves, the zeros all lie on a circle. Their angles are uniformly distributed, so for a curve of genus g a fixed interval I will contain 2g|I| angles as the genus grows. We show that for the variance of number of angles in I is asymptotically a constant multiple of log(2g|I|) and prove a central limit theorem: The normalized fluctuations are Gaussian. These results continue to hold fo…
This paper proves that the maximum number of rational points on a smooth, absolutely irreducible genus 4 curve over the field of 8 elements is 25. The body of the paper shows that 27 points is not possible using techniques from algebraic geometry. The appendix shows that 26 points is not possible by examining the zeta functions.

Let C/Q be a curve of genus three, given as a double cover of a plane conic. Such a curve is hyperelliptic over the algebraic closure of Q, but may not have a hyperelliptic model of the usual form over Q. We describe an algorithm that computes the local zeta functions of C at all odd primes of good reduction up to a prescribed bound N. The algorithm relies on an adaptation of the "accumulating remainder tree" to matrices with entries in a quadratic field. We report on an implementation, and compare its performance to previous algorithms for the ordinary hyperelliptic case.
We determine the zeta functions of trinomial curves in terms of Gauss sums and Jacobi sums, and we obtain an explicit formula of the genus of a trinomial curve over a finite field, then we study the conditions for a trinomial curve to be a maximal curve over a finite field.
We give a natural construction of unramified over Z framed mixed Tate motives, whose periods are the multiple zeta values. Namely, for each convergent multiple zeta-value we define two boundary divisors A and B in the moduli space M_{0,n+3} of stable curves of genus zero. The corresponding multiple zeta-motive is the n-th cohomology of the pair (M_{0,n+3} -A,B).
The algebra of big zeta values we introduce in this paper is an intermediate object between multiple zeta values and periods of the multiple zeta motive. It consists of number series generalizing multiple zeta values, the simplest examples, which are not multiple zeta series, are Tornheim sums. We show that convergent big zeta values are periods of the moduli space of stable curves of genus zero on one hand and multiple zeta values on the other hand. It gives an alternative way to prove that any such period may be expressed as a rational linear combination of multiple zeta values and a simple …
The Zeta function of a curve $C$ over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary matrix $Θ_C$. Following the work of Rudnick, we compute the expected value of $\mbox{tr}(Θ_C^n)$ over the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$, over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, in the limit of large genus. As an application, we compute the expected value of the number of points on $C$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ as the genus tends to infinity. We also look at biases in both expected values for small values of $n$.
We express the coefficients of the Hirzebruch L-polynomials in terms of certain alternating multiple zeta values. In particular, we show that every monomial in the Pontryagin classes appears with a non-zero coefficient, with the expected sign. Similar results hold for the polynomials associated to the A-hat genus.
We relate one-loop scattering amplitudes of massless open- and closed-string states at the level of their low-energy expansion. The modular graph functions resulting from integration over closed-string punctures are observed to follow from symmetrized open-string integrals through a tentative generalization of the single-valued projection known from genus zero.
We show that abelian surfaces (and consequently curves of genus 2) over totally real fields are potentially modular. As a consequence, we obtain the expected meromorphic continuation and functional equations of their Hasse--Weil zeta functions. We furthermore show the modularity of infinitely many abelian surfaces A over Q with End_C(A)=Z. We also deduce modularity and potential modularity results for genus one curves over (not necessarily CM) quadratic extensions of totally real fields.
We study the extent to which curves over finite fields are characterized by their zeta functions and the zeta functions of certain of their covers. Suppose C and C' are curves over a finite field K, with K-rational base points P and P', and let D and D' be the pullbacks (via the Abel-Jacobi map) of the multiplication-by-2 maps on their Jacobians. We say that (C,P) and (C',P') are *doubly isogenous* if Jac(C) and Jac(C') are isogenous over K and Jac(D) and Jac(D') are isogenous over K. For curves of genus 2 whose automorphism groups contain the dihedral group of order eight, we show that the nu…
The zeta function of a curve over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary symplectic matrix, called the Frobenius class of the curve. We compute the expected value of the trace of the n-th power of the Frobenius class for an ensemble of hyperelliptic curves of genus g over a fixed finite field in the limit of large genus, and compare the results to the corresponding averages over the unitary symplectic group USp(2g). We are able to compute the averages for powers n almost up to 4g, finding agreement with the Random Matrix results except for small …
We will introduce a regularization for $p$-adic multiple zeta values and show that the generalized double shuffle relations hold. This settles a question raised by Deligne, given as a project in Arizona winter school 2002. Our approach is to use the theory of Coleman functions on the moduli space of genus zero curves with marked points and its compactification. The main ingredients are the analytic continuation of Coleman functions to the normal bundle of divisors at infinity and definition of a special tangential base point on the moduli space.
We propose a Las Vegas probabilistic algorithm to compute the zeta function of a genus-3 hyperelliptic curve defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$, with explicit real multiplication by an order $\mathbb Z[η]$ in a totally real cubic field. Our main result states that this algorithm requires an expected number of $\widetilde O((\log q)^6)$ bit-operations, where the constant in the $\widetilde O()$ depends on the ring $\mathbb Z[η]$ and on the degrees of polynomials representing the endomorphism $η$. As a proof-of-concept, we compute the zeta function of a curve defined over a 64-bit prime f…
