We are interested in existence of gradient flows for shape functionals especially for first Laplacian eigenvalues. We introduce different techniques to prove existence and use different formulations for gradient flows. We apply a compactness argument to prove existence of generalized minimizing movements for Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions with respect to several common metrics. Moreover, we use Brunn-Minkowski inequalities to prove $α$-convexity and existence of contraction semi-groups for Dirichlet boundary conditions on convex bodies. Finally, we give a proof of $α$-convexity for Robin boundary conditions by the second domain variation since we do not have a Brunn-Minkowski inequality in this case.
We consider arbitrary open sets $Ω$ in Euclidean space with finite Lebesgue measure, and obtain upper bounds for (i) the largest Courant-sharp Dirichlet eigenvalue of $Ω$, (ii) the number of Courant-sharp Dirichlet eigenvalues of $Ω$. This extends recent results of P. Bérard and B. Helffer.
We consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a domain in R^d and study the effect that performing a scaling in one direction has on the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions as a function of the scaling parameter around zero. This generalizes our previous results in two dimensions and, as in that case, allows us to obtain an approximation for Dirichlet eigenvalues for a large class of domains, under very mild assumptions. As an application, we derive a three--term asymptotic expansion for the first eigenvalue of d-dimensional ellipsoids.
In this paper, we prove the Generalized Pólya conjecture for the Dirichlet eigenvalues. In other words, we show that $λ_k(α) \ge \frac{(2π)^α k^{α/n}}{\big(ω_n \cdot {vol}(Ω)\big)^{α/n}}, \quad\, {for}\;\; k=1,2,3,....$ where $λ_k(α)$ is the $k$-th Dirichlet eigenvalue for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{α/2}$ with $α\in (0,2]$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset {\Bbb R}^n$.
This paper is dedicated to the classical Hadamard formula for asymptotics of eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-Laplacian under perturbations of the boundary. We prove that the Hadamard formula still holds for $C^1$-domains with $C^1$-perturbations. We also derive an optimal estimate for the remainder term in the $C^{1,α}$-case. Furthermore, if the boundary is merely Lipschitz, we show that the Hadamard formula is not valid.
We consider Dirichlet Laplacian in a thin curved three-dimensional rod. The rod is finite. Its cross-section is constant and small, and rotates along the reference curve in an arbitrary way. We find a two-parametric set of the eigenvalues of such operator and construct their complete asymptotic expansions. We show that this two-parametric set contains any prescribed number of the first eigenvalues of the considered operator. We obtain the complete asymptotic expansions for the eigenfunctions associated with these first eigenvalues.

Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with $C^2$-smooth boundary in an $n$-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold. It is well-known that for the bi-harmonic equation $Δ^2 u=0$ in $Ω$ with the $0$-Dirichlet boundary condition, there exists an infinite set $\{u_k\}$ of biharmonic functions in $Ω$ with positive eigenvalues $\{λ_k\}$ satisfying $Δu_k+ λ_k \varrho \frac{\partial u_k}{\partial ν}=0$ on the boundary $\partial Ω$. In this paper, by a new method we establish the Weyl-type asymptotic formula for the counting function of the biharmonic Stekloff eigenvalues $λ_k$.
Taking advantage from the so-called "Lemma on small eigenvalues" by Colin de Verdière, we study ramification for multiple eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian in bounded perforated domains. The asymptotic behavior of multiple eigenvalues turns out to depend on the asymptotic expansion of suitable associated eigenfunctions. We treat the case of planar domains in details, thanks to the asymptotic expansion of a generalization of the so-called u-capacity which we compute in dimension 2. In this case multiple eigenvalues are proved to split essentially by different rates of convergence of the pe…
In this article we will explore Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls on spherically symmetric manifolds. We will compare any Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue with the corresponding Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue on balls in Euclidean space with the same radius. As a special case we will show that the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls with small radius on the sphere are smaller than the corresponding eigenvalues on the Euclidean ball with the same radius. While the opposite is true for the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues of hyperbolic spaces.
We order lowest mixed Dirichlet-Neumann eigenvalues of right triangles according to which sides we apply the Dirichlet conditions. It is generally true that Dirichlet condition on a superset leads to larger eigenvalues, but it is nontrivial to compare e.g. the mixed cases on triangles with just one Dirichlet side. As a consequence of that order we also classify the lowest Neumann and Dirichlet eigenvalues of rhombi according to their symmetry/antisymmetry with respect to the diagonal. We also give an order for the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann eigenvalues on arbitrary triangle, assuming two Dirichle…
The goal of this paper is to study the Dirichlet eigenvalues of bounded domains $Ω\subset Ω'$. With a local spectral stability requirement on $Ω$, we show that the difference of the Dirichlet eigenvalues of $Ω'$ and $Ω$ is explicitly controlled from above in terms of the first eigenvalue of $Ω'\setminus\barΩ$ and of geometric constants depending on the inner domain $Ω$. In particular, $Ω'$ can be an arbitrary bounded domain.
We prove that the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a regular $N$-gon of area $π$ has an asymptotic expansion of the form $λ_1(1+\sum_{n\ge3}C_n(λ_1)N^{-n})$ as $N\to\infty$, where $λ_1$ is the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the unit disk and $C_n$ are polynomials whose coefficients belong to the space of multiple zeta values of weight $n$. We also explicitly compute these polynomials for all $n\le14$.
Results are obtained for two minimization problems: $$I_k(c)=\inf \{λ_k(Ω): Ω \textup{open, convex in}\ \mathbb{R}^m,\ \mathcal{T}(Ω)= c \},$$ and $$J_k(c)=\inf\{λ_k(Ω): Ω \textup{quasi-open in}\ \mathbb{R}^m, |Ω|\le 1, \mathcal {P}(Ω)\le c \},$$ where $c>0$, $λ_k(Ω)$ is the $k$'th eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian acting in $L^2(Ω)$, $|Ω|$ denotes the Lebesgue measure of $Ω$, $\mathcal{P}(Ω)$ denotes the perimeter of $Ω$, and where $\mathcal{T}$ is in a suitable class set functions. The latter include for example the perimeter of $Ω$, and the moment of inertia of $Ω$ with respect to its c…
We prove that $μ_{k+m}^m <λ_k^m$, where $μ_k^m$ ($λ_k^m$) are the eigenvalues of $(-Δ)^m$ on $Ω\subset\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq 2$, with Neumann (Dirichlet) boundary conditions.
We extend some classical inequalities between the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian to the context of mixed Steklov--Dirichlet and Steklov--Neumann eigenvalue problems. The latter one is also known as the sloshing problem, and has been actively studied for more than a century due to its importance in hydrodynamics. The main results of the paper are applied to obtain certain geometric information about nodal sets of sloshing eigenfunctions. The key ideas of the proofs include domain monotonicity for eigenvalues of mixed Steklov problems, as well as an adaptation of Filonov's me…
Following Escobar [Esc97] and Jammes [Jam15], we introduce two types of isoperimetric constants and give lower bound estimates for the first nontrivial eigenvalues of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators on finite graphs with boundary respectively.
We prove that for any domain in the Heisenberg group the (k+1)'th Neumann eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian is strictly less than the k'th Dirichlet eigenvalue. As a byproduct we obtain similar inequalities for the Euclidean Laplacian with a homogeneous magnetic field.
Among all triangles of given diameter, the equilateral triangle is shown to minimize the sum of the first $n$ eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian, for each $n \geq 1$. In addition, the first, second and third eigenvalues are each proved to be minimal for the equilateral triangle. The disk is conjectured to be the minimizer among general domains.
Given the Laplacian on a planar, convex domain with piecewise linear boundary subject to mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, we provide a sufficient condition for its lowest eigenvalue to dominate the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian with the complementary boundary conditions (i.e. with Dirichlet replaced by Neumann and vice versa). The application of this result to triangles gives an affirmative partial answer to a recent conjecture. Moreover, we prove a further observation of similar flavor for right triangles.
This paper is about a shape optimization problem related to the Dirichlet Laplacian eingevalues in the Euclidean plane. More precisely we study the shape of the minimizer in the class of open sets of constant width. We prove that the disk is not a local minimizer except for a limited number of eigenvalues.
We consider the minimisation of Dirichlet eigenvalues $λ_k$, $k \in \N$, of the Laplacian on cuboids of unit measure in $\R^3$. We prove that any sequence of optimal cuboids in $\R^3$ converges to a cube of unit measure in the sense of Hausdorff as $k \rightarrow \infty$.
We study extrema of the first and the second mixed eigenvalues of the Laplacian on the disk among some families of Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. We show that the minimizer of the second eigenvalue among all mixed boundary conditions lies in a compact 1-parameter family for which an explicit description is given. Moreover, we prove that among all partitions of the boundary with bounded number of parts on which Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are imposed alternately, the first eigenvalue is maximized by the uniformly distributed partition.
In this work, we give sharp asymptotic equivalents in the limit $h\to 0$ of the small eigenvalues of the Witten Laplacian, that is the operator associated with the quadratic form $$ ψ\in H^1_0(Ω)\mapsto h^2 \int_Ω\big \vert \nabla \big (e^{\frac 1hf} ψ\big )\big \vert^2\, e^{-\frac 2hf},$$where $\overlineΩ=Ω\cup \partial Ω$ is an oriented $C^\infty$ compact and connected Riemannian manifold with non empty boundary $\partial Ω$ and $f: \overline Ω\to \mathbb R$ is a $C^\infty$ Morse function. The function $f$ is allowed to admit critical points on $ \partial Ω$, which is the main novelty of thi…
We consider the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem on a simple polytope. We use the Rellich identity to obtain an explicit formula expressing the Dirichlet eigenvalue in terms of the Neumann data on the faces of the polytope of the corresponding eigenfunction. The formula is particular simple for polytopes admitting an inscribed ball tangent to all the faces. Our result could be viewed as a generalization of similar identities for simplices recently found by Christianson [1][2].
This paper is dedicated to the regularity of the optimal sets for the second eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian. Precisely, we prove that if the set $Ω$ minimizes the functional \[ \mathcal F_Λ(Ω)=λ_2(Ω)+Λ|Ω|, \] among all subsets of a smooth bounded open set $D\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $λ_2(Ω)$ is the second eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on $Ω$ and $Λ>0$ is a fixed constant, then $Ω$ is equivalent to the union of two disjoint open sets $Ω_+$ and $Ω_-$, which are $C^{1,α}$-regular up to a (possibly empty) closed set of Hausdorff dimension at most $d-5$, contained in the one-phase…
We study the behaviour of extremal eigenvalues of the Dirichlet biharmonic operator over rectangles with a given fixed area. We begin by proving that the principal eigenvalue is minimal for a rectangle for which the ratio between the longest and the shortest side lengths does not exceed $1.066459$. We then consider the sequence formed by the minimal $k^{\rm th}$ eigenvalue and show that the corresponding sequence of minimising rectangles converges to the square as $k$ goes to infinity.
Given a Schrödinger operator with a real-valued potential on a bounded, convex domain or a bounded interval we prove inequalities between the eigenvalues corresponding to Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions, respectively. The obtained inequalities depend partially on monotonicity and convexity properties of the potential. The results are counterparts of classical inequalities for the Laplacian but display some distinction between the one-dimensional case and higher dimensions.
Inequalities between the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian have received much attention in the literature, but open problems abound. Here, we study the number of Neumann eigenvalues no greater than the first Dirichlet eigenvalue. Based on a combination of analytical and numerical results, we conjecture that this number is controlled by the isoperimetric ratio of the domain. This has applications to the nodal deficiency of eigenfunctions and is closely related to a long-standing conjecture of Yau on the Hausdorff measure of nodal sets.
We consider a shape optimization problem for the first mixed Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalues of domains bounded by two balls in two-point homogeneous space. We give a geometric proof which is motivated by Newton's shell theorem
We consider the inverse spectral problem for periodic Jacobi matrices in terms of the vertical slits on the quasi-momentum domain plus the Dirichlet eigenvalues, i.e., the Marchenko-Ostrovsky mapping. Moreover, we show that the gradients of the Dirichlet eigenvalues and of the so-called norming constants are linear independent.
This paper investigates the birth-death ("B-D" for short) process on tree with continuous time, emphasizing on estimating the principal eigenvalue (equivalently, the convergence rate) of the process with Dirichlet boundary at the unique root 0. Three kinds of variational formulas for the eigenvalue are presented. As an application, we obtain a criterion for positivity of the first eigenvalue for B-D processes on tree with one branch after some layer.
We deal with the Sturm--Liouville operator $Ly=l(y)=-\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}+q(x)y,$ with Dirichlet--Neumann boundary conditions $ y(0)=y'(π)=0 $ in the space $L_2[0,π]$. We assume that the potential $q$ is complex-valued and has the form $q(x)=u'(x)$, where $u\in L_2[0,π]$. Here the derivative is treated in the distributional sense. Our aim is to obtain the detailed asymptotic formulae for eigenvalues and eigen- and associated functions of the operator $L$.
We prove the long-standing Payne conjecture that the $k^{\text{th}}$ eigenvalue in the buckling problem for a clamped plate is not less than the ${k+1}^{\text{st}}$ eigenvalue for the membrane of the same shape which is fixed on the boundary. Moreover, we show that the Payne conjecture is still true for $n$-dimensional case ($n\ge 2)$.
We consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a planar domain and study the effect that performing a scaling in one direction has on the spectrum. We derive the asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions as a function of the scaling parameter around zero. This method allows us, for instance, to obtain an approximation for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for a large class of planar domains, under very mild assumptions.
Inequalities for the eigenvalues of the (negative) Laplacian subject to mixed boundary conditions on polyhedral and more general bounded domains are established. The eigenvalues subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition on a part of the boundary and a Neumann boundary condition on the remainder of the boundary are estimated in terms of either Dirichlet or Neumann eigenvalues. The results complement several classical inequalities between Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues due to Pólya, Payne, Levine and Weinberger, Friedlander, and others.
