A comprehensive model atom was developed for Si I-II-III using the most up-to-date atomic data available so far. Based on the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE = NLTE) line formation for Si I, Si II, and Si III and high-resolution observed spectra, we determined the NLTE abundances for a sample of nine unevolved A9 to B3-type stars with well determined atmospheric parameters. For each star, NLTE reduces substantially the line-to-line scatter for Si II compared with the LTE case and leads to consistent mean abundances from lines of different ionisation stages. In the hottest star of our sample, $ι$ Her, Si II is subject to overionisation that drives emission in the lines arising from the high-excitation (above 12.5 eV) doublet levels. Our NLTE calculations reproduced 10 emission lines of Si II observed in $ι$ Her. The same overionisation effect leads to greatly weakened Si II lines, which are observed in absorption in $ι$ Her. Large positive NLTE abundance corrections (up to 0.98 dex for 5055 A) were useful for achieving consistent mean abundances from lines of the two ionisation stages, Si II and Si III. It was found that the NLTE effects are overestimated for the Si II 6347, 6371 A doublet in $ι$ Her, while the new model atom works well for the cooler stars. At this stage, we failed to understand this problem. We computed for a grid of the NLTE abundance corrections for lines of Si I, Si II, and Si III in the model atmospheres with effective temperatures and surface gravities characteristic of unevolved A-B type stars.
This study shows that the statistical equilibrium of Si II in the atmosphere of a B3 IV type star iota Her is extremely sensitive to a variation in photoionization cross-sections for the Si II levels. The difference in abundances derived from absorption lines of Si II between applying the data from two equal accuracy sources, namely, the Opacity Project (OP) and the NORAD database, amounts to 0.18 dex, on average. Using the hydrogenic approximation for photoionization cross-sections, we obtain the departure coefficients for the Si II \eu{4s}{2}{S}{}{} level, the source function for Si II 6371 …
The atmospheric abundances of elements provide essential insights into the formation and evolution history of stars. The visible wavelength window has been used almost exclusively in the past to determine the abundances of chemical elements in B-type stars. However, some elements do not have useful spectral lines in the visible. A high resolution spectrum of $ι$~Herculis is available from 999 to 1400\,Å.\ In this project, we investigate the abundance determination in the UV. We identify the elements whose abundances can be tested, and search for elements whose abundances can be determined in t…
We present a list of weak emission lines (WELs) observed in a sharp-lined B3 V star ι Her (HD 160762) using high resolution (R = 65000) and high SN (~1300) spectral data. The list covers a spectral region between 4900A and 10000A. We register 207 WELs in this star and identified 190 lines including ten ions (nine elements). Emission lines of C II, N I, Cr II, Mn II, and Ni II have been identified among normal B-type stars for the first time. 17 emission lines remain unidentified. We compare our list with the published list of WELs for 3 Cen A (Wahlgren and Hubrig 2004) and found that numbers o…
Binary post-AGB stars are interesting laboratories to study both the evolution of binaries as well as the structure of circumstellar disks. A multiwavelength high angular resolution study of the prototypical object 89 Herculis is performed with the aim of identifying and locating the different emission components seen in the SED. A large interferometric data set, collected over the past decade and covering optical and near-IR wavelengths, is analyzed with simple geometric models. Combining the interferometric constraints with the photometry and the optical spectra, we reassess the energy budge…
We obtained 128 high signal-to-noise ratio Stokes $V$ spectra of the B3V star $ι$~Her on 5 consecutive nights in 2012 with the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, with the aim of searching for the presence of weak and/or complex magnetic fields. Least-Squares Deconvolution mean profiles were computed from individual spectra, averaged over individual nights and over the entire run. No Zeeman signatures are detected in any of the profiles. The longitudinal magnetic field in the grand average profile was measured to be $-0.24 \pm 0.32 $ G, as compared to $-0.22 \pm …
We evaluate non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for neutral sodium in model atmospheres of the 79 red giants using the model atom that incorporates the best available atomic data. The non-LTE abundances of Na were determined from Na I 6154, 6161 Å for the 38 stars of the thin disk (15 of them the BaII stars), 15 stars of the thick disk, 13 stars of Hercules stream and 13 transition stars which can be identified with neither thin disk nor thick disk. For Na I 6154, 6161 Å non-LTE abundance corrections amount to -0.06 to -0.24 dex depending on stellar parameters. We fo…
Optical high-resolution spectra of V652 Her and HD 144941, the two extreme helium stars with exceptionally low C/He ratios, have been subjected to a non-LTE abundance analysis using the tools TLUSTY and SYNSPEC. Defining atmospheric parameters were obtained from a grid of non-LTE atmospheres and a variety of spectroscopic indicators including He I and He II line profiles, ionization equilibrium of ion pairs such as C II/C III and N II/N III. The various indicators provide a consistent set of atmospheric parameters: $T_{\rm eff}$=25000$\pm$300K, $\log g$ = 3.10$\pm$0.12(cgs), and $ξ=13\pm2 {\rm…
In this review we discuss possible systematic errors inherent in classical 1D LTE abundance analyses of late-type stars for the light elements (here: H, He, Li, Be and B). The advent of realistic 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres and the availability of non-LTE line formation codes place the stellar analyses on a much firmer footing and indeed drastically modify the astrophysical interpretations in many cases, especially at low metallicities. For the Teff-sensitive hydrogen lines both stellar granulation and non-LTE are likely important but the combination of the two has not yet been fully e…
We have obtained the first estimates of the masses of the components of the Her X-1/HZ Her X-ray binary system taking into account non-LTE effects in the formation of the H_gamma absorption line: mx=1.8Msun and mv=2.5Msun. These mass estimates were made in a Roche model based on the observed radial-velocity curve of the optical star, HZ Her. The masses for the X-ray pulsar and optical star obtained for an LTE model lie are mx=0.85\pm0.15Msun and mv=1.87\pm0.13Msun. These mass estimates for the components of Her X-1/HZ Her derived from the radial-velocity curve should be considered tentative. F…
It is generally accepted that the atmospheres of cool/lukewarm stars of spectral types A and later are described well by LTE model atmospheres, while the O-type stars require a detailed treatment of NLTE effects. Here model atmosphere structures, spectral energy distributions and synthetic spectra computed with ATLAS9/SYNTHE and TLUSTY/SYNSPEC, and results from a hybrid method combining LTE atmospheres and NLTE line-formation with DETAIL/SURFACE are compared. Their ability to reproduce observations for effective temperatures between 15000 and 35000 K are verified. Strengths and weaknesses of t…
The aim of this study is to analyse and determine elemental abundances for a large sample of distant B stars in the outer Galactic disk in order to constrain the chemical distribution of the Galactic disk and models of chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Here, we present preliminary results on a few stars along with the adopted methodology based on securing simultaneous O and Si ionization equilibria with consistent NLTE model atmospheres.
Oxygen abundance measurements are important for understanding stellar structure and evolution. Measured in Cepheids, they further provide clues on the metallicity gradient and chemo-dynamical evolution in the Galaxy. However, most of the abundance analyses of Cepheids to date have been based on one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic model atmospheres. Here, we test the validity of this approach for the key oxygen abundance diagnostic, the \ion{O}{I} $777\,\mathrm{nm}$~triplet lines. We carry out 2D non-LTE radiative transfer clculations across two different 2D radiation hydrodynamics simulations of …
Strontium has proven itself to be one of the most important neutron-capture elements in the study of metal-poor stars. Thanks to the strong absorption lines of Sr, they can be detected even in the most metal-poor stars and also in low-resolution spectra. However, we still cannot explain the large star-to-star abundance scatter we derive for metal-poor stars. Here we contrast Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) with improved abundances for SrI+II including updated atomic data, to evaluate possible explanations for the large star-to-star scatter at low metallicities. We derive abundances under bot…
Context. The pursuit of more realistic spectroscopic modelling and consistent abundances has led us to begin a new series of papers designed to improve current solar and stellar abundances of various atomic species. To achieve this, we have began updating the three-dimensional (3D) non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer code, Multi3D, and the equivalent one-dimensional (1D) non-LTE radiative transfer code, MULTI. Aims. We examine our improvements to these codes by redetermining the solar barium abundance. Barium was chosen for this test as it is an important diagnosti…
Abundances of 21 elements in two 3He stars HD 185330 and 3 Cen A have been analysed relative to the well studied sharp-lined B3 V star iota Her. Six elements (P, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Br) are over-abundant in these two peculiar stars, while six elements (C, O, Mg, Al, S, and Cl) are under-abundant. Absorption lines of the two rarely observed heavy elements Br II and Kr II are detected in both stars and these elements are both over-abundant. The centroid wavelengths of the Ca II infrared triplet lines in these stars are red-shifted relative to those lines in iota Her and the presence of heavy iso…
Giant stars as known exoplanet hosts are relatively rare due to the potential challenges in acquiring precision radial velocities and the small predicted transit depths. However, these giant host stars are also some of the brightest in the sky and so enable high signal-to-noise follow-up measurements. Here we report on new observations of the bright (V ~ 3.3) giant star $ι$ Draconis ($ι$ Dra), known to host a planet in a highly eccentric ~511 day period orbit. TESS observations of the star over 137 days reveal asteroseismic signatures, allowing us to constrain the stellar radius, mass, and age…
Carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen are the fourth, sixth, and third most abundant elements in the Sun. Their abundances remain hotly debated due to the so-called solar modelling problem that has persisted for almost $20$ years. We revisit this issue by presenting a homogeneous analysis of $408$ molecular lines across $12$ diagnostic groups, observed in the solar intensity spectrum. Using a realistic 3D radiative-hydrodynamic model solar photosphere and LTE (local thermodynamic equilibrium) line formation, we find $\logε_{C} = 8.47\pm0.02$, $\logε_{N} = 7.89\pm0.04$, and $\logε_{O} = 8.70\pm0.04$. Th…
The infrared Mg I lines near 12 microns are a pair of emission lines which are magnetically sensitive and have been used to measure solar magnetic fields. Here we calculate the response of the Mg I 12.32 $μ$m line during a flare and find that in our modeling this line has a complicated behavior. At the beginning of the flare heating, this line shows an intensity dimming at the line center. The intensity then increases when heating continues, with increasing contributions from the heated layers in the chromosphere. The line formation height and the line width also increase as a result. As for t…
Synthesis performed under non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (non-LTE) conditions usually overestimate stellar spectra. An approach widely adopted in the literature to reduce the excess of UV radiation consists of artificially increasing the continuum opacity by using multiplicative fudge factors, which are empirically derived to impose the synthetized spectrum to match the observed one. Although the method was initially developed to improve non-LTE synthesis of spectral lines, it has been recently employed to model solar spectral irradiance variability. Such irradiance reconstruction techniq…
We discuss a new one-dimensional non-LTE time-dependent radiative-transfer technique for the simulation of supernova (SN) spectra and light curves. Starting from a hydrodynamical input characterizing the homologously-expanding ejecta at a chosen post-explosion time, we model the evolution of the entire ejecta, including gas and radiation. Non-LTE, which holds in all regions at and above the photosphere, is accounted for. The effects of line blanketing on the radiation field are explicitly included, using complex model atoms and solving for all ion level populations appearing in the statistical…
Although oxygen is an important tracer of the early Galactic evolution, its abundance trends with metallicity are still relatively poorly known at [Fe/H] < -2.5. This is in part due to a lack of reliable oxygen abundance indicators in the metal-poor stars, in part due to shortcomings in 1D LTE abundance analyses. In this study we determined the oxygen abundance in the metal-poor halo giant HD 122563 using a 3D hydrodynamical CO5BOLD model atmosphere. Our main goal was to understand whether a 3D LTE analysis may help to improve the reliability of oxygen abundances determined from OH UV lines in…
The study of massive stars in different metallicity environments is a central topic of current stellar research. The spectral analysis of massive stars requires adequate model atmospheres. The computation of such models is difficult and time-consuming. Therefore, spectral analyses are greatly facilitated if they can refer to existing grids of models. Here we provide grids of model atmospheres for OB-type stars at metallicities corresponding to the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, as well as to solar metallicity. In total, the grids comprise 785 individual models. The models were calculated u…

We present a detailed analysis of Spitzer-IRAC images obtained toward six Herbig-Haro objects (HH 54/211/212, L 1157/1448, BHR 71). Our analysis includes: (1) comparisons in morphology between the four IRAC bands (3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 um), and H2 1-0 S(1) at 2.12 um for three out of six objects; (2) measurements of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at selected positions; and (3) comparisons of these results with calculations of thermal H2 emission at LTE (207 lines in four bands) and non-LTE (32-45 lines, depending on particle for collisions). We show that the morphologies observed at 3.6 …
From exploratory studies and theoretical expectations it is known that simplifying approximations in spectroscopic analysis (LTE, 1D) lead to systematic biases of stellar parameters and abundances. These biases depend strongly on surface gravity, temperature, and, in particular, for LTE vs. non-LTE (NLTE) on metallicity of the stars. Here we analyse the [Mg/Fe] and [Fe/H] plane of a sample of 326 stars, comparing LTE and NLTE results obtained using 1D hydrostatic models and averaged <3D> models. We show that compared to the <3D>NLTE benchmark, all other three methods display increasing biases …
For studies of Galactic evolution, the accurate characterization of stars in terms of their evolutionary stage and population membership is of fundamental importance. A standard approach relies on extracting this information from stellar evolution models but requires the effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity of a star obtained by independent means. In previous work, we determined accurate effective temperatures and non-LTE logg and [Fe/H] (NLTE-Opt) for a large sample of metal-poor stars, -3<[Fe/H]<-0.5, selected from the RAVE survey. As a continuation of that work, we derive…
Ellerman bombs and UV bursts are transient brightenings that are ubiquitously observed in the lower atmospheres of active and emerging flux regions. Here we present inversion results of SST/CRISP and CHROMIS, as well as IRIS data of such transient events. Combining information from the Mg II h & k, Si IV and Ca II 8542A and Ca II H & K lines, we aim to characterise their temperature and velocity stratification, as well as their magnetic field configuration. We find average temperature enhancements of a few thousand kelvin close to the classical temperature minimum, but localised peak temperatu…
A very high resolution (R=200,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N=340) blue-green spectrum of the very metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-2.6) red giant star HD122563 has been obtained by us at McDonald Observatory. We measure the asymmetries and core wavelengths of a set of unblended FeI lines covering a wide range of line strength. Line bisectors exhibit the characteristic C-shape signature of surface convection (granulation) and they span from about 100 m/s in the strongest FeI features to 800 m/s in the weakest ones. Core wavelength shifts range from about -100 to -900 m/s, depending on line strength. …
(Abridged) Aims: We study the effects related to departures from non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) and homogeneity in the atmospheres of red giant stars in Galactic globular cluster NGC 6752, to assess their influence on the formation of Ba II lines. Methods: One-dimensional (1D) local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and 1D NLTE barium abundances were derived using classical 1D ATLAS stellar model atmospheres. The three-dimensional (3D) LTE abundances were obtained for 8 red giants on the lower RGB, by adjusting their 1D LTE abundances using 3D-1D abundance corrections, i.e., the diff…
Context. The best example of a massive star with an ionized outflow launched from its photoevaporating disk is MWC349A. The large amount of reported radio-continuum and radio-recombination line observations toward this galactic UC-HII region offers a unique possibility to build a model of the ionized envelope of this source. Aims. To understand the physical conditions and kinematics of the ionized region of the circumstellar disk and also of the outflow of MWC349A. Methods. We compared the bulk of radio-continuum maps, radio-recombination line profiles, and the H30alpha centroid map published …

The spatial origin and detectability of rotational H2O emission lines from Herbig Ae type protoplanetary disks beyond 70 micron is discussed. We use the recently developed disk code ProDiMo to calculate the thermo-chemical structure of a Herbig Ae type disk and apply the non-LTE line radiative transfer code Ratran to predict water line profiles and intensity maps. The model shows three spatially distinct regions in the disk where water concentrations are high, related to different chemical pathways to form the water: (1) a big water reservoir in the deep midplane behind the inner rim, (2) a be…
We study the implications of averaging methods with different reference depth scales for 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres computed with the Stagger-code. The temporally and spatially averaged (hereafter denoted as <3D>) models are explored in the light of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) spectral line formation by comparing spectrum calculations using full 3D atmosphere structures with those from <3D> averages. We explore methods for computing mean <3D> stratifications from the Stagger-grid time-dependent 3D radiative hydro- dynamical atmosphere models by considering four different ref…
The physical structures of the outer atmospheres of red giants are not known. They are certainly complex and a range of recent observations are showing that we need to embrace to non-classical atmosphere models to interpret these regions. This region's properties is of importance, not the least, for the understanding of the mass-loss mechanism for these stars, which is not still understood. Here, we present observational constraints of the outer regions of red giants, based on mid-IR, high spectral resolution spectra. We also discuss possible non-LTE effects and highlight a new non-LTE code th…
Precise fundamental atmospheric stellar parameters and abundance determination of individual elements in stars are important for all stellar population studies. Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (Non-LTE; hereafter NLTE) models are often important for such high precision, however, can be computationally complex and expensive, which renders the models less utilized in spectroscopic analyses. To alleviate the computational burden of such models, we developed a robust 1D, LTE and NLTE fundamental atmospheric stellar parameter derivation tool, $\texttt{LOTUS}$, to determine the effective tempera…
We study all possible sources of inaccuracy in theoretical values of the photometric observables, i.e. amplitude ratios and phase differences, of early B-type main sequence pulsators. Here, we discuss effects of parameters coming from both models of stellar atmospheres and linear nonadiabatic theory of stellar pulsation. In particular, we evaluate for the first time the effect of the departure from the LTE approximation. The atmospheric input comes from line-blanketed, LTE and NLTE plane-parallel, hydrostatic models. To compute the limb-darkening coefficients for NLTE models, we use the Least-…
Physically realistic models of stellar spectra are needed in a variety of astronomical studies, from the analysis of fundamental stellar parameters, to studies of exoplanets and stellar populations in galaxies. Here we present a new version of the widely-used radiative transfer code Turbospectrum, which we update with the capacity to perform spectrum synthesis for lines of multiple chemical elements in Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE). We use the code in the analysis of metallicites and abundances of the Gaia FGK benchmark stars, using one-dimensional MARCS atmospheric models and the…
The structures of the outer atmospheres of red giants are very complex. The notion of large optically thick molecular spheres around the stars (MOLspheres) has been invoked in order to explain e.g. spectro-interferometric observations. However, high-resolution spectra in the mid-IR do not easily fit into this picture. They rule out any large sphere of water vapour in LTE surrounding red giants. Our aim here is to investigate high-resolution, mid-infrared spectra for a range of red giants, from early-K to mid M. We have recorded 12 microns spectra of 10 well-studied bright red giants, with TEXE…
We provide measurements of the Ba isotopic fractions for five metal-poor stars derived with an LTE analysis using 1D model stellar atmospheres. We use high resolution (R\equivλ/Δλ=90000-95000), very high signal-to-noise (S/N>500) spectra to determine the fraction of odd Ba isotopes (fodd) by measuring subtle asymmetries in the profile of the Ba ii line at 4554 Å. We also use two different macroturbulent broadening techniques, Gaussian and radial-tangential, to model the Fe lines of each star, and propagate each technique to model macroturbulent broadening in the Ba 4554 Å line. We conduct a 1D…
Kilonova spectra imprint valuable information about the elements synthesized in neutron star mergers. In AT2017gfo, the kilonova associated with GW170817, the spectroscopic feature centered around 8000 angstroms has been interpreted as the P-Cygni profile arising from singly ionized Strontium. Recently, Perego et al. (2022) suggested that Helium 10833 line can be an alternative explanation of the feature. Here, we study the line features under non-local thermodynamic equilibrium. We find that the ionization of ejecta by the stopping of radioactive decay product can significantly enhance the io…
Elemental abundances of the most metal-poor stars reflect the conditions in the early Galaxy and the properties of the first stars. We present a spectroscopic follow-up of two ultra metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<-4.0) identified by the survey {\em Pristine}: Pristine 221.8781+9.7844 and Pristine 237.8588+12.5660 (hereafter Pr 221 and Pr 237, respectively). Combining data with earlier observations, we find a radial velocity of -149.25 $\pm$ 0.27 and -3.18 $\pm$ 0.19 km/s for Pr 221 and Pr 237, respectively, with no evidence of variability between 2018 and 2020. From a one-dimensional (1D) local ther…
Several large stellar spectroscopic surveys are producing overwhelming amounts of data that can be used for determining stellar atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances. Nonetheless, the accuracy achieved in the derived astrophysical parameters is still insufficient, mainly because of the paucity of adequate calibrators, particularly in the metal-poor regime ([Fe/H] $\leq -$1.0). Here, we introduce the Titans metal-poor reference stars: a sample of 41 dwarf and subgiant stars with accurate parameters. Effective temperatures (Teff) were derived by fitting observed H$α$ profiles with synth…
Context. Although oxygen is an important tracer of Galactic chemical evolution, measurements of its abundance in the atmospheres of the oldest Galactic stars are still scarce and rather imprecise. At the lowest end of the metallicity scale, oxygen can only be measured in giant stars and in most of cases such measurements rely on a single forbidden [O I] 630 nm line that is very weak and frequently blended with telluric lines. Although molecular OH lines located in the ultraviolet and infrared could also be used for the diagnostics, oxygen abundances obtained from the OH lines and the [O I] 630…

Determining the effective temperatures (Teff) of red supergiants (RSGs) observationally is important in many fields of stellar physics and galactic astronomy, yet some significant difficulties remain due to model uncertainty originating majorly in the extended atmosphere of RSGs. Here we propose the line-depth ratio (LDR) method in which we use only Fe I lines. As opposed to the conventional LDR method with lines of multiple species involved, the LDR of this kind is insensitive to the surface gravity effects and expected to circumvent the uncertainty originating in the upper atmosphere of RSGs…
We present results of the spectroscopic study of the chemically peculiar star BD+30$^\circ$549 which is bona-fide member of young NGC 1333 star forming region. We found that the star possesses negligible rotation and helium-weak spectroscopic pattern with strongly enhanced Si II and Si III lines. The fundamental parameters of the star $T_{eff}$=13100~K and $\log (L/L_{\odot})$=2.1 indicate its age of about 2.7 Myr and position on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram at the end of the Pre-Main Sequence evolutionary track, close to the Zero Age Main Sequence. Abundance analysis reveals the modest def…
We present an analysis of Spitzer-IRS observations of H2O, OH, HCN, C2H2, and CO2 emission, and Keck-NIRSPEC observations of CO emission, from a diverse sample of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be circumstellar disks. We find that detections and strengths of most mid-IR molecular emission features are correlated with each other, suggesting a common origin and similar excitation conditions. We note that the line detection efficiency is anti-correlated with the 13/30 um SED spectral slope, which is a measure of the degree of grain settling in the disk atmosphere. We also note a correlation between detect…
The importance of the physical environment in the evolution of newly formed low-mass stars remains an open question. In particular, radiation from nearby more massive stars may affect both the physical and chemical structure of these kinds of young stars. Aims: To constrain the physical characteristics of a group of embedded low-mass protostars in Corona Australis in the vicinity of the young luminous Herbig Be star R CrA. Methods: Millimetre wavelength maps of molecular line and continuum emission towards the low-mass star forming region IRS7 near R CrA from the SMA and APEX are presented. Th…

A long sought after goal using chemical abundance patterns derived from metal-poor stars is to understand the Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) and to pin down the nature of the first stars (Pop III). Here, we use a sample of 14 metal-poor stars observed with the high-resolution spectrograph PEPSI at the LBT to derive abundances of 32 elements (34 including limits). We present well-sampled abundance patterns for all stars obtained using local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) radiative transfer codes and 1D hydrostatic model atmospheres. It is currently well known that the assumptions of 1D and …
Context. Theoretical calculations have shown that when solar prominences move away from the surface of the Sun, their radiative output is affected via the Doppler dimming or brightening effects. Aims. In this paper we ask whether observational signatures of the changes in the radiative output of eruptive prominences can be found in EUV (extreme ultraviolet) observations of the first resonance line of ionised helium at 304 Å. We also investigate whether these observations can be used to perform a diagnostic of the plasma of the eruptive prominence. Methods. We first look for suitable events in …
Our recent re-analysis of the solar photospheric spectra with non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) models resulted in higher metal abundances compared to previous works. When applying the new chemical abundances to Standard Solar Model calculations, the new composition resolves the long-standing discrepancies with independent constraints on the solar structure from helioseismology. Critical to the determination of chemical abundances is the accuracy of the atomic data, specially the $f$-values, used in the radiative transfer models. Here we describe in detail the calculations of $f$-v…
An analysis of the CH molecule in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) is performed for the physical conditions of cool stellar atmospheres typical of red giants (log g = 2.0, Teff = 4500 K) and the Sun. The aim of the present work is to explore whether the G-band of the CH molecule, which is commonly used in abundance diagnostics of Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars, is sensitive to NLTE effects. LTE and NLTE theoretical spectra are computed with the MULTI code. We use one-dimensional (1D) LTE hydrostatic MARCS model atmospheres with parameters representing eleven red giant stars …
Aims. We investigate statistical equilibrium of Cr in the atmospheres of late-type stars to show whether the systematic abundance discrepancy between Cr I and Cr II lines, as often encountered in the literature, is due to deviations from LTE. Furthermore, we attempt to interpret the NLTE trend of [Cr/Fe] with [Fe/H] using chemical evolution models for the solar neighborhood. Methods. NLTE calculations are performed for the model of Cr atom, comprising 340 levels and 6806 transitions in total. We make use of the quantum-mechanical photoionization cross-sections of Nahar (2009) and investigate s…
