Determining the effective temperatures (Teff) of red supergiants (RSGs) observationally is important in many fields of stellar physics and galactic astronomy, yet some significant difficulties remain due to model uncertainty originating majorly in the extended atmosphere of RSGs. Here we propose the line-depth ratio (LDR) method in which we use only Fe I lines. As opposed to the conventional LDR method with lines of multiple species involved, the LDR of this kind is insensitive to the surface gravity effects and expected to circumvent the uncertainty originating in the upper atmosphere of RSGs. Therefore, the LDR--Teff relations that we calibrated empirically with red giants may be directly applied to RSGs, though various differences, e.g., caused by the three-dimensional non-LTE effects, between the two groups of objects need to be kept in mind. Using the near-infrared YJ-band spectra of nine well-known solar-metal red giants observed with the WINERED high-resolution spectrograph, we selected 12 pairs of Fe I lines least contaminated with other lines. Applying their LDR--Teff relations to ten nearby RSGs, the resultant Teff with the internal precision of 30--70 K shows good agreement with previous observational results assuming one-dimensional LTE and with Geneva's stellar evolution model. We found no evidence of significant systematic bias caused by various differences, including those in the size of the non-LTE effects, between red giants and RSGs except for one line pair which we rejected because the non-LTE effects may be as large as ~250 K. Nevertheless, it is difficult to evaluate the systematic bias, and further study is required, e.g., with including the three-dimensional non-LTE calculations of all the lines involved.
Detailed non-LTE calculations for red supergiant stars are presented to investigate the influence of NLTE on the formation of atomic iron and titanium lines in the J-band. With their enormous brightness at J-band red supergiant stars are ideal probes of cosmic abundances. Recent LTE studies have found that metallicities accurate to 0.15 dex can be determined from medium resolution spectroscopy of individual red supergiants in galaxies as distant as 10 Mpc. The non-LTE results obtained in this investigation support these findings. Non-LTE abundance corrections for iron are smaller than 0.05 dex…
The following parameters are determined for 63 Galactic supergiants in the solar neighbourhood: effective temperature Teff, surface gravity log g, iron abundance log e(Fe), microturbulent parameter Vt, mass M/Msun, age t and distance d. A significant improvement in the accuracy of the determination of log g and, all parameters dependent on it, is obtained through application of van Leeuwens (2007) re-reduction of the Hipparcos parallaxes. The typical error in the log g values is now +-0.06 dex for supergiants with distances d < 300 pc and +-0.12 dex for supergiants with d between 300 and 700 p…
We investigate the dust growth in oxygen-rich stellar outflows for a set of nine well-observed massive supergiants with optically thin dust shells. Models of the infrared emission from their circumstellar dust shells are compared to their observed infrared spectra so as to derive the essential parameters that govern dust formation in the extended envelope of these stars. The results obtained from the comparative study are also compared with the predictions of a model for silicate dust condensation solely based on laboratory data and basic stellar properties. The infrared emission in the wavele…
B[e] stars are hot stars surrounded by circumstellar gas and dust responsible for the presence of emission lines and IR-excess in their spectra. How dust can be formed in this highly illuminated and diluted environment remains an open issue. HD 62623 is one of the very few A-type supergiants showing the B[e] phenomenon. We obtained nine calibrated visibility measurements using the VLTI/MIDI instrument in SCI-PHOT mode and PRISM spectral dispersion mode with projected baselines ranging from 13 to 71 m and with various position angles. We used geometrical models and physical modeling with a radi…
Optical spectra of the peculiar supergiant 3Pup taken in 1997-2008 are used to analyze the spectral peculiarities and velocity field in its atmosphere. The profiles of strong FeII lines and of the lines of other iron-group ions have a specific shape: the wings are raised by emissions, whereas the core is sharpened by a depression. The latter feature becomes more pronounced with the increasing line strength, and the increasing wavelength. Line profiles are variable: the magnitude and sign of the absorption asymmetry, and the blue-to-red emission intensity ratios vary from one spectrum to anothe…
The inner disk of the Galaxy has a number of young star clusters dominated by red supergiants that are heavily obscured by dust extinction and observable only at infrared wavelengths. These clusters are important tracers of the recent star formation and chemical enrichment history in the inner Galaxy. During the technical commissioning and as a first science verification of the GIANO spectrograph at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we secured high-resolution (R~50,000) near-infrared spectra of three red supergiants in the young Scutum cluster RSGC2. Taking advantage of the full YJHK spectral …
We investigate the occurrence of crystalline silicates in oxygen-rich evolved stars across a range of metallicities and mass-loss rates. It has been suggested that the crystalline silicate feature strength increases with increasing mass-loss rate, implying a correlation between lattice structure and wind density. To test this, we analyse Spitzer IRS and Infrared Space Observatory SWS spectra of 217 oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch stars and 98 red supergiants in the Milky Way, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds and Galactic globular clusters. These encompass a range of spectral morpholog…
We present a 0.5"-resolution diffraction-limited 17.7 micron image of the red supergiant Antares obtained with the VLT mid-infrared instrument VISIR. The VISIR image shows six clumpy dust clouds located at 0.8"--1.8" (43--96 stellar radii = 136--306 AU) away from the star. We also detected compact emission within a radius of 0.5" from the star. Comparison of our VISIR image taken in 2010 and the 20.8 micron image taken in 1998 with the Keck telescope reveals the outward motions of four dust clumps. The proper motions of these dust clumps amount to 0.2"--0.6" in 12 years. This translates into e…
Medium resolution J-band spectroscopy of individual red supergiant stars is a promising tool to investigate the chemical composition of the young stellar population in star forming galaxies. As a continuation of recent work on iron and titanium, detailed non-LTE calculations are presented to investigate the influence of NLTE on the formation of silicon lines in the J-band spectra of red supergiants. Substantial effects are found resulting in significantly stronger absorption lines of neutral silicon in non-LTE. As a consequence, silicon abundances determined in non-LTE are significantly smalle…
We report mid- to far-infrared imaging and photomety from 7 to 37 microns with SOFIA/FORCAST and 2 micron adaptive optics imaging with LBTI/LMIRCam of a large sample of red supergiants (RSGs) in four Galactic clusters; RSGC1, RSGC2=Stephenson 2, RSGC3, and NGC 7419. The red supergiants in these clusters cover their expected range in luminosity and initial mass from approximately 9 to more than 25 Solar masses. The population includes examples of very late-type RSGs such as MY Cep which may be near the end of the RSG stage, high mass losing maser sources, yellow hypergiants and post-RSG candida…
The Scutum complex in the inner disk of the Galaxy hosts a number of young clusters and associations of red supergiant stars that are heavily obscured by dust extinction. These stars are important tracers of the recent star formation and chemical enrichment history in the inner Galaxy. Within the SPA Large Programme at the TNG, we secured GIANO-B high-resolution (R=50,000) YJHK spectra of 11 red supergiants toward the Alicante 7 and Alicante 10 associations near the RSGC3 cluster. Taking advantage of the full YJHK spectral coverage of GIANO in a single exposure, we were able to measure several…
We present the first systematic study of lithium abundance in a chemically homogeneous sample of 27 red supergiants (RSGs) in the young Perseus complex. For these stars, accurate stellar parameters and detailed chemical abundances of iron and iron peak, CNO, alpha, light and neutron-capture elements have been already obtained by means of high resolution optical and near-infrared spectroscopy. The observed RSGs have half-solar metallicity, 10-30 Myr age, bolometric luminosities in the 10$^4$-10$^5$ L$_{\odot}$ range and likely mass progenitors in the 9-14 M$_{\odot}$ range. We detected the opti…
Non-LTE calculations for Mg I in red supergiant stellar atmospheres are presented to investigate the importance of non-LTE for the formation of Mg I lines in the NIR J-band. Recent work using medium resolution spectroscopy of atomic lines in the J-band of individual red supergiant stars has demonstrated that technique is a very promising tool to investigate the chemical composition of the young stellar population in star forming galaxies. As in previous work, where non-LTE effects were studied for iron, titanium and silicon, substantial effects are found resulting in significantly stronger Mg …
Recent studies have shown that the area around the massive, obscured cluster RSGC3 may harbour several clusters of red supergiants. In this paper, we analyse a clump of photometrically selected red supergiant candidates 20' south of RSGC3 in order to confirm the existence of another of these clusters. Using medium-resolution infrared spectroscopy around 2.27 microns, we derived spectral types and velocities along the line of sight for the selected candidates, confirming their nature and possible association. We find a compact clump of eight red supergiants and four other candidates at some dis…
Context. The Perseus complex in the outer disk of the Galaxy hosts a number of clusters and associations of young stars. Gaia is providing a detailed characterization of their kinematic structure and evolutionary properties. Aims. Within the SPA Large Programme at the TNG, we secured HARPS-N and GIANO-B high-resolution optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra of the young red supergiant (RSG) stars in the Perseus complex, in order to obtain accurate radial velocities, stellar parameters and detailed chemical abundances. Methods. We used spectral synthesis to best-fit hundreds of atomic and mole…
Red supergiants with their enormous brightness at J-band are ideal probes of cosmic chemical composition. It is therefore crucial to have realistic models of radiative transfer in their atmospheres, which will permit determination of abundances accurate to 0.15 dex, the precision attainable with future telescope facilities in galaxies as distant as tens of Mpc. Here, we study the effects of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) on the formation of iron, titanium, and silicon lines, which dominate J-band spectra of red supergiants. It is shown that the NLTE radiative transfer models enable…
We present high spectral resolution (R = 30000) spectroscopic observations of the SiO fundamental lines near 8.1 micron in 16 bright red giants and red supergiants using VLT/VISIR. Our sample consists of seven normal K--M giants, three Mira stars, three optically bright red supergiants, two dusty red supergiants, and the enigmatic object GCIRS3 near the Galactic center. We detected SiO fundamental lines in all of our program stars except for GCIRS3. The SiO lines in normal K and M giants as well as optically bright red supergiants do not show P-Cyg profiles or blueshifts, which means the absen…

During the technical commissioning and as a first science verification of the GIANO spectrograph at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we secured high-resolution (R=50,000) near-infrared spectra of five red supergiants in the young Scutum cluster RSGC3. Optical constants of non-stoichiometric amorphous magnesium-iron silicates are determined. It is demonstrated that these can well reproduce the observed mid-infrared emission spectra of evolved stars. Stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric amorphous magnesium-iron silicate films are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. Transmittance and ellipsometry measurements are performed in the wavelength range between 2 and 200 $μ$m and 1.7 and 33 $μ$m, respectively. Optical constants are derived from transmittance and ellipsometric $Ψ$ and $Δ$ spectra by means of oscillator models. The optical constant…
We present an interferometric study of the continuum surface of the red supergiant star Betelgeuse at 11.15 microns wavelength, using data obtained with the Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer each year between 2006 and 2010. These data allow an investigation of an optically thick layer within 1.4 stellar radii of the photosphere. The layer has an optical depth of ~1 at 11.15 microns, and varies in temperature between 1900 K and 2800 K and in outer radius between 1.16 and 1.36 stellar radii. Electron-hydrogen atom collisions contribute significantly to the opacity of the layer. The layer …
With a luminosity > 10^5 Lsun and a mass-loss rate of about 2.10-4 Msun/yr, the red supergiant VY CMa truly is a spectacular object. Because of its extreme evolutionary state, it could explode as supernova any time. Studying its circumstellar material, into which the supernova blast will run, provides interesting constraints on supernova explosions and on the rich chemistry taking place in such complex circumstellar envelopes. We have obtained spectroscopy of VYCMa over the full wavelength range offered by the PACS and SPIRE instruments of Herschel, i.e. 55 to 672 micron. The observations show…
The spectra of protoplanetary disks contain mid- and far- infrared emission features produced by forsterite dust grains. The spectral features contain information about the forsterite temperature, chemical composition and grain size. We aim to characterize how the 23 and 69 micron features can be used to constrain the physical locations of forsterite in disks. We check for consistency between two independent forsterite temperature measurements: the 23/69 feature strength ratio and the shape of the 69 micron band. We performed radiative transfer modeling to study the effect of disk properties t…
To measure the mass loss from dusty oxygen-rich (O-rich) evolved stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), we have constructed a grid of models of spherically-symmetric dust shells around stars with constant mass-loss rates using 2Dust. These models will constitute the O-rich model part of the "Grid of Red supergiant and Asymptotic giant branch star ModelS" (GRAMS). This model grid explores 4 parameters - stellar effective temperature from 2100 K - 4700 K; luminosity from 10^3-10^6 L_Sun; dust shell inner radii of 3, 7, 11, and 15 R_Star; and 10.0 micron optical depth from 10^-4 to 26. From a…
The dynamics of the surface and inner atmosphere of the red supergiant star Betelgeuse are the subject of numerous high angular resolution and spectroscopic studies. Here, we present three-telescope interferometric data obtained at 11.15 microns wavelength with the Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer (ISI), that probe the stellar surface continuum. We find striking variability in the size, effective temperature, and degree of asymmetry of the star over the years 2006-2009. These results may indicate an evolving shell of optically thick material close to the stellar photosphere.
Stellar absorption lines of heavy elements can give us various insights into the chemical evolution of the Galaxy and nearby galaxies. Recently developed spectrographs for the near-infrared wavelengths are becoming more and more powerful for producing a large number of high-quality spectra, but identification and characterization of the absorption lines in the infrared range remain to be fulfilled. We searched for lines of the elements heavier than the iron group, i.e., those heavier than Ni, in the Y (9760--11100 AA) and J (11600--13200 AA) bands. We considered the lines in three catalogs, i.…
We present mid-infrared observations for a sample of 16 O-type stars. The data were acquired with the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope, using the IRS instrument at moderate resolution (R $\sim$ 600), covering the range $\sim 10-37$ microns. Our sample includes early, mid and late O supergiants and dwarfs. We explore for the first time their mid-IR spectral morphology in a quantitative way. We use NLTE expanding atmosphere models to help with line identifications, analyze profile contributions and line-formation regions. The O supergiants present a rich emission line spectra. The most intense featu…
Context: We have analysed Herschel-PACS spectra of 32 circumstellar disks around Herbig Ae/Be and T-Tauri stars obtained within the Herschel key programme DIGIT. In this paper we focus on the 69mu emission band of the crystalline silicate forsterite. Aims: This work provides an overview of the 69mu forsterite bands in the DIGIT sample. We aim to derive the temperature and composition of the forsterite grains. With this information, constraints can be placed on the spatial distribution of the forsterite in the disk and its formation history. Methods: Position and shape of the 69mu band are used…
Betelgeuse, one of the most studied red supergiant stars, dimmed in the optical by ~1.2 mag between late 2019 and early 2020, reaching an historical minimum called "the Great Dimming." Thanks to enormous observational effort to date, two hypotheses remain that can explain the Dimming: a decrease in the effective temperature and an enhancement of the extinction caused by newly produced circumstellar dust. However, the lack of multi-wavelength monitoring observations, especially in the mid infrared where emission from circumstellar dust can be detected, has prevented us from closely examining th…
IRC +10420 is one of the few known massive stars in rapid transition from the Red Supergiant phase to the Wolf-Rayet or Luminous Blue Variable phase. The star has an ionised wind and using the Br gamma hydrogen recombination emission we assess the mass-loss on spatial scales of order 1 au. We present new VLT Interferometer AMBER data which are combined with all other AMBER data in the literature. The final dataset covers a position angle range of 180 degrees and baselines up to 110 meters. The spectrally dispersed visibilities, differential phases and line flux are conjointly analyzed and mode…
We present an analysis of the far-infrared and submillimetre molecular emission line spectrum of the luminous M-supergiant VY CMa, observed with the SPIRE and PACS spectrometers aboard the Herschel Space Observatory. Over 260 emission lines were detected in the 190-650-micron SPIRE FTS spectra, with one-third of the observed lines being attributable to H2O. Other detected species include CO, 13CO, H2^18O, SiO, HCN, SO, SO2, CS, H2S, and NH3. Our model fits to the observed 12CO and 13CO line intensities yield a 12C/13C ratio of 5.6+-1.8, consistent with measurements of this ratio for other M su…
SN 2020cxd is a representative of the family of low-energy, underluminous Type IIP supernovae (SNe), whose observations and analysis were recently reported by Yang et al. (2021). Here we re-evaluate the observational data for the diagnostic SN properties by employing the hydrodynamic explosion model of a 9 MSun red supergiant progenitor with an iron core and a pre-collapse mass of 8.75 Msun. The explosion of the star was obtained by the neutrino-driven mechanism in a fully self-consistent simulation in three dimensions (3D). Multi-band light curves and photospheric velocities for the plateau p…
We search for LBV stars in galaxies outside the Local Group. Here we present a study of two bright $Hα$ sources in the NGC 247 galaxy. Object j004703.27-204708.4 ($M_V=-9.08 \pm 0.15^m$) shows the spectral lines typical for well-studied LBV stars: broad and bright emission lines of hydrogen and helium He I with P Cyg profiles, emission lines of iron Fe II, silicon Si II, nitrogen N II and carbon C II, forbidden iron [Fe II] and nitrogen [N II] lines. The variability of the object is $ΔB = 0.74\pm0.09^m$ and $ΔV = 0.88\pm0.09^m$, which makes it reliable LBV candidate. The star j004702.18-204739…

MAGIS (Measuring Abundances of red super Giants with Infrared Spectroscopy) project I. Establishment of an abundance analysis procedure for red supergiants and its evaluation with nearby stars
We present 52-93 micron spectra, obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope, of luminous compact far-IR sources in the SMC. These comprise 9 Young Stellar Objects (YSOs), the compact HII region N81 and a similar object within N84, and two red supergiants (RSGs). The spectra of the sources in N81 (of which we also show the ISO-LWS spectrum between 50-170 micron) and N84 both display strong [OI] 63-micron and [OIII] 88-micron fine-structure line emission. We attribute these lines to strong shocks and photo-ionized gas, respectively, in a ``champagne flow'' scenario. The nitrogen content of these …
