We present an analysis of Spitzer-IRS observations of H2O, OH, HCN, C2H2, and CO2 emission, and Keck-NIRSPEC observations of CO emission, from a diverse sample of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be circumstellar disks. We find that detections and strengths of most mid-IR molecular emission features are correlated with each other, suggesting a common origin and similar excitation conditions. We note that the line detection efficiency is anti-correlated with the 13/30 um SED spectral slope, which is a measure of the degree of grain settling in the disk atmosphere. We also note a correlation between detection efficiency and H-alpha equivalent width, and tentatively with accretion rate, suggesting that accretional heating contributes to line excitation. If detected, H2O line fluxes are correlated with the mid-IR continuum flux, and other co-varying system parameters, such as L_star. However, significant sample variation, especially in molecular line ratios, remains. LTE models of the H2O emission show that line strength is primarily related to the best-fit emitting area, and this accounts for most source-to-source variation in H2O emitted flux. Best-fit temperatures and column densities cover only a small range of parameter space, near 10^{18} cm-2 and 450 K for all sources, suggesting a high abundance of H2O in many planet-forming regions. Other molecules have a range of excitation temperatures from ~500-1500 K, also consistent with an origin in planet-forming regions. We find molecular ratios relative to water of ~10^{-3} for all molecules, with the exception of CO, for which n(CO)/n(H2O)~1. However, LTE fitting caveats and differences in the way thermo-chemical modeling results are reported make comparisons with such models difficult, and highlight the need for additional observations coupled with the use of line-generating radiative transfer codes.
The understanding of organic content of protoplanetary discs is one of the main goals of the planet formation studies. As an attempt to guide the observational searches for weak lines of complex species in discs, we modelled the (sub-)millimetre spectrum of gaseous methanol (CH$_3$OH), one of the simplest organic molecules, in the representative T Tauri system. We used 1+1D disc physical model coupled to the gas-grain ALCHEMIC chemical model with and without 2D-turbulent mixing. The computed CH$_3$OH abundances along with the CH$_3$OH scheme of energy levels of ground and excited torsional sta…
I describe new constraints on the lifetimes and morphologies of transitional protoplanetary disks from observations of 1--10 Myr old stars with the \textit{Spitzer Space Telescope}. New Spitzer results clearly show evidence for two kinds of transitional disks and thus two main disk evolutionary pathways: disks which form an inner hole/gap and clear from the inside out and disks that deplete more homologously. Analyzing the disk populations of 1--10 Myr old clusters such as Taurus, IC 348, NGC 2362, and $η$ Cha show that the mean transitional disk lifetime must be an appreciable fraction of the…
Protoplanetary disks are thought to be the birth places of planetary systems. The formation and the subsequent evolution of protoplanetary disks are regulated by the star formation process, which begins with the collapse of a cloud core to form a central protostar surrounded by a disk and an overlying envelope. In the protostellar phase, most of the envelope material is transferred onto the star through the disk during episodic, high accretion events. The initial conditions for planet formation in protoplanetary disks are likely set by the details of these processes. In this contribution, I wi…
This study presents sensitive MIR photometry obtained with the Spitzer/IRAC for a young cluster in Sh 2-208 (S208) located in one of the lowest-metallicity HII regions in the Galaxy, ${\rm [O/H]} = -0.8$ dex. Previous studies suggested that the cluster is $\sim$0.5-Myr old and has a distance of $D = 4$ kpc, which is consistent with the astrometric distance from Gaia EDR3. In $\sim$$3.5 \times 4$-arcmin field, 96 sources were detected in at least one MIR band at $\ge$10$σ$, covering intermediate-mass stars with $\sim$1.0-$M_\odot$ mass detection limit. Total 41 probable cluster members were ide…
We present our investigation of 319 Class II objects in Orion A observed by $Spitzer$/IRS. We also present the follow-up observation of 120 of these Class II objects in Orion A from IRTF/SpeX. We measure continuum spectral indices, equivalent widths, and integrated fluxes that pertain to disk structure and dust composition from IRS spectra of Class II objects in Orion A. We estimate mass accretion rates using hydrogen recombination lines in the SpeX spectra of our targets. Utilizing these properties, we compare the distributions of the disk and dust properties of Orion A disks to those of Taur…
High-resolution observations of edge-on proto-planetary disks in emission from molecular species sampling different critical densities and formation pathways offer the opportunity to trace the vertical chemical and physical structures of protoplanetary disks. Based on analysis of sub-arcsecond resolution Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) archival data for the edge-on Flying Saucer disk (2MASS J16281370-2431391), we establish the vertical and radial differentiation of the disk CN emitting regions with respect to those of $^{12}$CO and CS, and we model the disk physical conditions from which…
The Cepheus B (CepB) molecular cloud and a portion of the nearby CepOB3b OB association, one of the most active regions of star formation within 1 kpc, have been observed with the IRAC detector on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The goals are to study protoplanetary disk evolution and processes of sequential triggered star formation in the region. Out of ~400 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars selected with an earlier Chandra X-ray Observatory observation, 95% are identified with mid-infrared sources and most of these are classified as diskless or disk-bearing stars. The discovery of the additio…
The UV radiation field is a critical regulator of gas-phase chemistry in surface layers of disks around young stars. In an effort to understand the relationship between photocatalyzing UV radiation fields and gas emission observed at infrared and sub-mm wavelengths, we present an analysis of new and archival HST, Spitzer, ALMA, IRAM, and SMA data for five targets in the Lupus cloud complex and 14 systems in Taurus-Auriga. The HST spectra were used to measure LyA and FUV continuum fluxes reaching the disk surface, which are responsible for dissociating relevant molecular species (e.g. HCN, N2).…
Star formation often occurs within or nearby stellar clusters. Irradiation by nearby massive stars can photoevaporate protoplanetary disks around young stars (so-called proplyds) which raises questions regarding the ability of planet formation to take place in these environments. We investigate the two-dimensional physical and chemical structure of a protoplanetary disk surrounding a low-mass (T Tauri) star which is irradiated by a nearby massive O-type star to determine the survivability and observability of molecules in proplyds. Compared with an isolated star-disk system, the gas temperatur…
Large scale spectral maps of star forming regions enable the comparative study of the gas excitation around an ensemble of sources at a common frame of reference, providing direct insights in the multitude of processes involved. In this paper we employ spectral-line maps to decipher the excitation, the kinematical and dynamical processes in NGC 1333 as revealed by a number of different emission lines, aiming to set a reference for the applicability of tracers in constraining diverse physical processes. We reconstruct line maps for H$_2$ , CO, H$_2$O and C$^+$ using data obtained with the Spitz…
The recent detection of gas-phase methanol (CH$_3$OH) lines in the disc of TW Hya by Walsh et al. provided the first observational constraints on the complex O-bearing organic content in protoplanetary discs. The emission has a ring-like morphology, with a peak at $\sim 30-50$ au and an inferred column density of $\sim 3-6\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. A low CH$_3$OH fractional abundance of $\sim 0.3-4\times 10^{-11}$ (with respect to H$_2$) is derived, depending on the assumed vertical location of the CH$_3$OH molecular layer. In this study, we use a thermo-chemical model of the TW Hya disc, coupl…
[Abridged] The infrared ro-vibrational emission lines from organic molecules in the inner regions of protoplanetary disks are unique probes of the physical and chemical structure of planet forming regions and the processes that shape them. The non-LTE excitation effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) are studied in a full disk model to evaluate: (i) what the emitting regions of the different CO2 ro-vibrational bands are; (ii) how the CO2 abundance can be best traced using CO2 ro-vibrational lines using future JWST data and; (iii) what the excitation and abundances tell us about the inner disk physics…
Context. Several sulfur-bearing molecules are observed in the interstellar medium and in comets, in strong contrast to protoplanetary disks where only CS, H$_2$CS and SO have been detected so far. Aims. We combine observations and chemical models to constrain the sulfur abundances and their sensitivity to physical and chemical conditions in the DM Tau protoplanetary disk. Methods. We obtained $0.5^{"}$ ALMA observations of DM Tau in Bands 4 and 6 in lines of CS, SO, SO$_2$, OCS, CCS, H$_2$CS and H$_2$S, achieving a $\sim 5$ mJy sensitivity. Using the non-LTE radiative transfer code RADEX and t…
(Abridged) Surveys of protoplanetary disks in nearby star-forming regions (SFRs) have provided important information on their demographics, but due to their sample sizes, they cannot be used to study how disk properties vary with the environment. We conduct a survey of the unresolved millimeter continuum emission of 873 protoplanetary disks identified by Spitzer in the L1641 and L1647 regions of the Orion A cloud. This is the largest such survey yet, allowing us to identify even weak trends in the median disk mass as a function of position in the cloud and cluster membership. The sample detect…
High spatial resolution CO observations of mid-inclination (30-75°) protoplanetary disks offer an opportunity to study the vertical distribution of CO emission and temperature. The asymmetry of line emission relative to the disk major axis allows for a direct mapping of the emission height above the midplane, and for optically-thick, spatially-resolved emission in LTE, the intensity is a measure of the local gas temperature. Our analysis of ALMA archival data yields CO emission surfaces, dynamically-constrained stellar host masses, and disk atmosphere gas temperatures for the disks around: HD …
We present new deep UBVRI images and high-resolution multi-object optical spectroscopy of the young (~ 6 - 10 Myr old), relatively nearby (800 pc) open cluster IC 2395. We identify nearly 300 cluster members and use the photometry to estimate their spectral types, which extend from early B to middle M. We also present an infrared imaging survey of the central region using the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, covering the wavelength range from 3.6 to 24 microns. Our infrared observations allow us to detect dust in circumstellar disks originating over a typical ran…
The dominant reservoirs of elemental nitrogen in protoplanetary disks have not yet been observationally identified. Likely candidates are HCN, NH$_3$ and N$_2$. The relative abundances of these carriers determine the composition of planetesimals as a function of disk radius due to strong differences in their volatility. A significant sequestration of nitrogen in carriers less volatile than N$_2$ is likely required to deliver even small amounts of nitrogen to the Earth and potentially habitable exo-planets. While HCN has been detected in small amounts in inner disks ($<10$ au), so far only rela…
With Spitzer IRS we have obtained sensitive low-resolution spectroscopy from 5 to 35 microns for six supernova remnants (SNRs) that show evidence of shocked molecular gas: Kes 69, 3C 396, Kes 17, G346.6-0.2, G348.5-0.0 and G349.7+0.2. Bright, pure-rotational lines of molecular hydrogen are detected at the shock front in all remnants, indicative of radiative cooling from shocks interacting with dense clouds. We find the excitation of H2 S(0)-S(7) lines in these SNRs requires two non-dissociative shock components: a slow, 10 km/s C- shock through clumps of density 10^6 cm^-3, and a faster, 40-70…
We present the results of a multi-wavelength multi-epoch survey of five evolved protoplanetary disks in the IC 348 cluster that show significant infrared variability. Using 3-8micron and 24micron photometry along with 5-40micron spectroscopy from the Spitzer Space Telescope, as well as ground-based 0.8-5micron spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry, covering timescales of days to years, we examine the variability in the disk, stellar and accretion flux. We find substantial variations (10-60%) at all infrared wavelengths on timescales of weeks to months for all of these…
Episodic accretion plays an important role in the evolution of young stars. Although it has been under investigation for a long time, the origin of such episodic accretion events is not yet understood. We investigate the dust and gas emission of a sample of young outbursting sources in the infrared to get a better understanding of their properties and circumstellar material, and we use the results in a further work to model the objects. We used Herschel data, from our PI program of 12 objects and complemented with archival observations to obtain the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and spe…
Observations of different molecular lines in protoplanetary disks provide valuable information on the gas kinematics, as well as constraints on the radial density and temperature structure of the gas. With ALMA we have detected H13CO+ (J=4-3) and HC15N (J=4-3) in the HD97048 protoplanetary disk for the first time. We compare these new detections to the ringed continuum mm-dust emission and the spatially resolved CO (J=3-2) and HCO+ (J=4-3) emission. The radial distributions of the H13CO+ and HC15N emission show hints of ringed sub-structure whereas, the optically thick tracers, CO and HCO+, do…
The nature and abundance of sulfur chemistry in protoplanetary disks (PPDs) may impact the sulfur inventory on young planets and therefore their habitability. PPDs also present an interesting test bed for sulfur chemistry models, since each disk present a diverse set of environments. In this context, we present new sulfur molecule observations in PPDs, and new S-disk chemistry models. With ALMA we observed the CS 5-4 rotational transition toward five PPDs (DM Tau, DO Tau, CI Tau, LkCa 15, MWC 480), and the CS 6-5 transition toward three PPDs (LkCa 15, MWC 480 and V4046 Sgr). Across this sample…
The carbon monoxide rovibrational emission from discs around Herbig Ae stars and T Tauri stars with strong ultraviolet emissions suggests that fluorescence pumping from the ground X1 Sigma+ to the electronic A1 Pi state of CO should be taken into account in disc models. We implemented a CO model molecule that includes up to 50 rotational levels within nine vibrational levels for the ground and A excited states in the radiative photochemical code ProDiMo. We took CO collisions with hydrogen molecules, hydrogen atoms, helium, and electrons into account. We estimated the missing collision rates u…
We report a discovery of shocked gas from the supernova remnant (SNR) G357.7+0.3. Our millimeter and submillimeter observations reveal broad molecular lines of CO(2-1), CO(3-2), CO(4-3), 13CO (2-1) and 13CO (3-2), HCO^+ and HCN using HHSMT, Arizona 12-Meter Telescope, APEX and MOPRA Telescope. The widths of the broad lines are 15-30 kms, and the detection of such broad lines is unambiguous, dynamic evidence showing that the SNR G357.7+0.3 is interacting with molecular clouds. The broad lines appear in extended regions (>4.5'x5'). We also present detection of shocked H2 emission in mid-infrared…
Physical processes that govern the star and planet formation sequence influence the chemical composition and evolution of protoplanetary disks. To understand the chemical composition of protoplanets, we need to constrain the composition and structure of the disks from whence they are formed. We aim to determine the molecular abundance structure of the young disk around the TMC1A protostar on au scales in order to understand its chemical structure and any possible implications for disk formation. We present spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of CO, $HCO…
We present a multi-wavelength study of two HH objects (137 and 138) that may be associated. We use Gemini H$_2$ (2.12 $μ$m) and K (2.2 $μ$m) images, as well as APEX molecular line observations and Spitzer image archives. Several H$_2$ knots, linked to the optical chain of knots of HH 137, are identified in the Gemini and Spitzer 4.5 $μ$m images. New shock excited regions related to the optical knots delineating HH 138 are also reported. In addition, a bright 4.5 $μ$m 0.09 pc-long arc-shaped structure, roughly located mid-way between HH 137 and HH 138, is found to be associated with two Spitzer…
The sulfur abundance is poorly known in most environments. Yet, deriving the sulfur abundance is key to understanding the evolution of the chemistry from molecular clouds to planetary atmospheres. We present observations of H$_2$S 110-101 at 168.763 GHz toward the Herbig Ae star AB Aur. We aim to study the abundance of sulfuretted species toward AB Aur and to constrain how different species and phases contribute to the sulfur budget. We present new NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) interferometric observations of the continuum and H$_2$S 110-101 line at 168.763 GHz toward AB Aur. We d…
Class I protostars are a bridge between Class 0 protostars, and Class II protoplanetary disks. Recent studies show gaps and rings in the dust distribution of disks younger than 1 Myr, suggesting that planet formation may start already at the Class I stage. To understand what chemistry planets will inherit, it is crucial to characterize the chemistry of Class I sources and to investigate how chemical complexity evolves from Class 0 protostars to protoplanetary disks. The goal is twofold: to obtain a census of the molecular complexity in a sample of four Class I protostars, and to compare it wit…
We present the detection of fullerenes C60 and C70 in the star-forming region IC 348 of the Perseus molecular cloud. Mid-IR vibrational transitions of C60 and C70 in emission are found in Spitzer IRS spectra of individual stars (LRLL 1, 2, 58), in the averaged spectrum of three other cluster stars (LRLL 21, 31 and 67) and in spectra obtained at four interstellar locations distributed across the IC 348 region. Fullerene bands appear widely distributed in this region with higher strength in the lines-of-sight of stars at the core of the cluster. Emission features consistent with three most inten…
We present millimeter-wave observations of several molecular ions in the disk around the pre-main-sequence star DM Tau and use these to investigate the ionization fraction in different regions of the disk. New Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of H2D+ J=1_10 - 1_11, N2H+ J=4-3 and CO J=3-2 are presented. H2D+ and N2H+ are not detected and using the CO 3-2 disk size the observations result in an upper limit of <0.47 K km s-1 for both lines, a factor of 2.5 below previous single-dish H2D+ observations. Assuming LTE, a disk midplane temperature of 10-20 K and estimates of the H2D+ o/p ratio,…
Extensive surveys of star-forming regions with Spitzer have revealed populations of disk-bearing young stellar objects. These have provided crucial constraints, such as the timescale of dispersal of protoplanetary disks, obtained by carefully combining infrared data with spectroscopic or X-ray data. While observations in various regions agree with the general trend of decreasing disk fraction with age, the Lupus V and VI regions appeared to have been at odds, having an extremely low disk fraction. Here we show, using the recent Gaia data release 2 (DR2), that these extremely low disk fractions…
Asteroids and comets (planetesimals) are created in gas- and dust-rich protoplanetary discs. The presence of these planetesimals around main-sequence stars is usually inferred from the detection of excess continuum emission at infrared wavelengths from dust grains produced by destructive processes within these discs. Modelling of the disc structure and dust grain properties for those discs is often hindered by the absence of any meaningful constraint on the location and spatial extent of the disc. Multi-wavelength, spatially resolved imaging is thus invaluable in refining the interpretation of…
The mysterious "21 micrometer" emission feature seen almost exclusively in the short-lived protoplanetary nebula (PPN) phase of stellar evolution remains unidentified since its discovery two decades ago. This feature is always accompanied by the equally mysterious, unidentified "30 micrometer" feature and the so-called "unidentified infrared" (UIR) features at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 micrometer which are generally attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. The 30 micrometer feature is commonly observed in all stages of stellar evolution from the asymptotic giant branch…
The disk atmosphere is one of the fundamental elements of theoretical models of a protoplanetary disk. However, the direct observation of the warm gas (>> 100 K) at large radius of a disk (>> 10 AU) is challenging, because the line emission from warm gas in a disk is usually dominated by the emission from an inner disk. Our goal is to detect the warm gas in the disk atmosphere well beyond 10 AU from a central star in a nearby disk system of the Herbig Be star HD 100546. We measured the excitation temperature of the vibrational transition of CO at incremental radii of the disk from the central …
Mid-infrared (IR) observations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and molecular hydrogen emission are a potentially powerful tool to derive physical properties of dense environments irradiated by intense UV fields. We present new, spatially resolved, \emph{Spitzer} mid-IR spectroscopy of the high UV-field and dense photodissocation region (PDR) around Monoceros R2, the closest ultracompact \hII region, revealing the spatial structure of ionized gas, PAHs and H$_2$ emissions. Using a PDR model and PAH emission feature fitting algorithm, we build a comprehensive picture of the physical c…
We present the first detection of neutral atomic oxygen (3P_1-3P_2 fine structure line at ~63um) toward the Horsehead photodissociation region (PDR). The cloud has been mapped with the Spitzer Space Telescope at far-IR (FIR) wavelengths using MIPS in the spectral energy distribution (SED) mode. The [OI]63um line peaks at the illuminated edge of the cloud at AV~0.1-0.5 (inward the gas becomes too cold and outward the gas density drops). The luminosity carried by the [OI]63um line represents a significant fraction of the total FIR dust luminosity (I_63/I_FIR~4x10^-3). We analyze the dust continu…
Amino acids are building-blocks of proteins, basic constituents of all organisms and essential to life on Earth. They are present in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites and comets, but their origin is still unknown. Formation of amino acids in the interstellar medium is posible via specific gas-phase reactions in dark clouds, however sensitive radiosearches at millimeter wavelengths have not revealed their existence yet. The mid-IR vibrational spectra of amino acids provides an alternative path for their identification. We present Spitzer spectroscopic observations in the star-forming region IC …
Our understanding of protoplanetary disks has greatly improved over the last decade due to a wealth of data from new facilities. Unbiased dust surveys with Spitzer leave us with good constraints on the dust dispersal timescale of small grains in the terrestrial planet forming region. In the ALMA era, this can be confronted for the first time also with evolutionary timescales of mm grains in the outer disk. Gas surveys in the context of the existing multi-wavelength dust surveys will be a key in large statistical studies of disk gas evolution. Unbiased gas surveys are limited to ALMA CO submm s…
We present Herschel/PACS observations of L1448-MM, a Class 0 protostar with a prominent outflow. Numerous emission lines are detected at 55 < lambda < 210 micrometer including CO, OH, H2O, and [O I]. We investigate the spatial distribution of each transition to find that lines from low energy levels tend to distribute along the outflow direction while lines from high energy levels peak at the central spatial pixel. Spatial maps reveal that OH emission lines are formed in a relatively small area, while [O I] emission is extended. According to the rotational diagram analysis, the CO emission can…
