The paper presents a cooperative consideration of Raman spectra of $^2$ amorphous carbons as well as the nature and type of their amorphicity. The latter was attributed to the amorphization of a new type named as enforced fragmentation. The fragments are stable graphenous molecules, which are the basic structural units (BSUs) of the solids, determining them as amorphics with molecular structure. Due to weak intermolecular interaction, BSUs, once aggregated, are the main defendants for IR absorption and Raman scattering of the solids, just justifying the consideration of them at molecular level. The standard G-D-2D pattern of Raman spectra of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, $^2$ amorphous carbons, graphene and/or graphite crystal is attributed to extended honeycomb composition of carbon atoms and are suggested as manifestation of molecule-crystal dualism of graphenous materials. The molecular approximation, applied to the analysis of one-phonon spectra of the studied $^2$ ACs, makes it possible to trace a direct connection of the G-D spectra image as well as their broadband structure with a considerable dispersion of the C=C bond lengths within BSUs honeycomb structure, caused by the influence of chemical action, deformation, etc. This approximation, applied to the interpretation of two-phonon spectrum of graphenous molecules for the first time, reveals a particular role of electrical anharmonicity in the spectra formation and attributes this effect to a high degree of the electron density delocalization. A size-stimulated transition from molecular to quasi-particle phonon consideration of Raman spectra was experimentally traced, which allowed evaluation of a free path of optical phonons in graphene crystal.

We investigate magnetism in amorphous carbon as suggested by the recently reported ferromagnetism in a new form of amorphous carbon. We use spin constrained first-principles simulations to obtain amorphous carbon structures with the desired magnetization. We show that the existence of $sp^2$-like 3-fold coordinated carbon atoms plays an important role in obtaining magnetism in amorphous carbon. The detailed geometries of 3-fold carbon atoms induce the magnetic order in amorphous carbon.
The resonant Raman scattering in N-IR - UV range from amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) reveal inclusions of trans-polyacetylene (trans-(CH)x) chains with approximate length of up to 120 C=C units and inclusions of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) polymer chains. The PPV is evidenced by a strong dispersive mode at ca. 1175 cm-1. It was found that the Raman response from core Ag trans-(CH)x modes incorporated into a-C:H to changing excitation energy is identical to of free-standing chains thus facilitating identification of trans-(CH)x in complex carbonaceous materials spectra.
Strain in a material induces shifts in vibrational frequencies, which is a probe of the nature of the vibrations and interatomic potentials, and can be used to map local stress/strain distributions via Raman microscopy. This method is standard for crystalline silicon devices, but due to lack of calibration relations, it has not been applied to amorphous materials such as hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), a widely studied material for thin-film photovoltaic and electronic devices. We calculated the Raman spectrum of a-Si:H \ab initio under different strains $ε$ and found peak shifts $Δω=…
We present a practical method to compute the vibrational resonant Raman spectra in solids with delocalized excitations. We apply this approach to the study of tetrahedrous amorphous carbon. We determine the vibrational eigenmodes and eigenvalues using density functional theory in the local density approximation, and the Raman intensities using a tight binding approximation. The computed spectra are in good agreement with the experimental ones measured with visible and UV lasers. We analyze the Raman spectra in terms of vibrational modes of microscopic units. We show that, at any frequency, the…
Structural and mechanical properties of amorphous and nanocomposite carbon are investigated using tight-binding molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations. In the case of amorphous carbon, we show that the variation of sp^3 fraction as a function of density is linear over the whole range of possible densities, and that the bulk moduli follow closely the power-law variation suggested by Thorpe. We also review earlier work pertained to the intrinsic stress state of tetrahedral amorphous carbon. In the case of nanocomposites, we show that the diamond inclusions are stable only in dense amorph…
Two-mode valence electron configuration of carbon atoms lays the foundation of the unique two-mode amorphous state of the monoatomic carbon solid. From the fundamentals of solid-state physics, sp$^3$ and sp$^2$ amorphous carbons are two different amorphous species characterized by conceptually different short-range orders, namely, groups of tetrahedrally bonded sp3 configured atoms and size-restricted sp$^2$ graphene domains framed with heteroatom necklaces. Molecular character of sp$^2$ amorphics is coherent with the reaction mechanism of the solid amorphicity in due course of the forced frag…
Monte Carlo simulations, supplemented by ab initio calculations, shed light into the energetics and thermodynamic stability of nanostructured amorphous carbon. The interaction of the embedded nanocrystals with the host amorphous matrix is shown to determine in a large degree the stability and the relative energy differences among carbon phases. Diamonds are stable structures in matrices with sp^3 fraction over 60%. Schwarzites are stable in low-coordinated networks. Other sp^2-bonded structures are metastable.
Tight-binding molecular dynamics simulations shed light into the fracture mechanisms and the ideal strength of tetrahedral amorphous carbon and of nanocomposite carbon containing diamond crystallites, two of the hardest materials. It is found that fracture in the nanocomposites, under tensile or shear load, occurs inter-grain and so their ideal strength is similar to the pure amorphous phase. The onset of fracture takes place at weakly bonded sp^3 sites in the amorphous matrix. On the other hand, the nanodiamond inclusions significantly enhance the elastic moduli, which approach those of diamo…
Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used to characterize an amorphous layer observed at the interface in graphite and graphene films grown via thermal decomposition of C-face 4H-SiC. The amorphous layer does not to cover the entire interface, but uniform contiguous regions span microns of cross-sectional interface. Annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) images and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) demonstrate that the amorphous layer is a carbon-rich composition of Si/C. The amorphous layer is clearly observed in samples grown at 16…
The thermally-induced structural evolution of silicon- and oxygen-containing hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H:Si:O) was investigated by X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy, as well as molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The spectroscopic results indicate that the introduction of Si and O in hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) increases the activation energy for the conversion of sp3- to sp2-bonded C. MD simulations indicate that the higher thermal stability of a-C:H:Si:O compared to a-C:H derives from the lower fraction of strained C-C sp3 bonds in a-C:H:Si:O.
We present a comparative ab initio computational study of sodium and lithium storage in amorphous (glassy) carbon (a-C) vs. graphite. Amorphous structures are obtained by fitting stochastically generated structures to a reference radial distribution function. Li insertion is thermodynamically favored in both graphite and a-C. While sodium insertion is thermodynamically unfavored in graphite, a-C possesses multiple insertion sites with binding energies stronger than Na cohesive energy, making it usable as anode material for Na-ion batteries.
Surface resistivity of hydrogenated amorphous carbon films was measured as a function of the applied electrical field. The measured dependence shows a sharp ambipolar peak near zero gate voltage. Furthermore, we found that in some samples sheet resistance at the peak is as low as 7.5 kΩ/sq. This value is the same order of magnitude as the sheet resistance of a defect free graphene monolayer. Therefore a conclusion is made that an intrinsic graphene with dimensions of at least millimeters exist on the surface of amorphous carbon films. These results can open new perspectives not only for graphe…
The approach based on selected set of samples and selected set of analytical tools occurred quite efficient when applying to amorphous carbons thus leading to a transformation of the current representation of the issue based on particulars into that one based on a limited set of fixed commonalities. The approach first part implies a set of different origin solid samples. The second part concerns different analytical tools. The combining part means the application of each tool to the whole set of samples. In the current study two natural amorphous carbons shungite carbon and antraxolite, as wel…
We introduce a Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) for atomistic simulations of liquid and amorphous elemental carbon. Based on a machine-learning representation of the density-functional theory (DFT) potential-energy surface, such interatomic potentials enable materials simulations with close-to DFT accuracy but at much lower computational cost. We first determine the maximum accuracy that any finite-range potential can achieve in carbon structures; then, using a novel hierarchical set of two-, three-, and many-body structural descriptors, we construct a GAP model that can indeed reach the…
The structure of amorphous materials has been debated since the 1930's as a binary question: amorphous materials are either Zachariasen continuous random networks (Z-CRNs) or Z-CRNs containing crystallites. It was recently demonstrated, however, that amorphous diamond can be synthesized in either form. Here we address the question of the structure of single-atom-thick amorphous monolayers. We reanalyze the results of prior simulations for amorphous graphene and report kinetic Monte Carlo simulations based on alternative algorithms. We find that crystallite-containing Z-CRN is the favored struc…
Carbon is likely the most fascinating element of the periodic table because of the diversity of its allotropes stemming from its variable (sp, sp2, and sp3) bonding motifs. Exploration of new forms of carbon has been an eternal theme of contemporary scientific research. Here we report on novel amorphous carbon phases containing high fraction of sp3 bonded atoms recovered after compressing fullerene C60 to previously unexplored high pressure and temperature. The synthesized carbons are the hardest and strongest amorphous materials known to date, capable of scratching diamond crystal and approac…
We generate representative structural models of amorphous carbon (a-C) from constant-volume quenching from the liquid with subsequent relaxation of internal stresses in molecular dynamics simulations using empirical and machine-learning interatomic potentials. By varying volume and quench rate we generate structures with a range of density and amorphous morphologies. We find that all a-C samples show a universal relationship between hybridization, bulk modulus and density despite having distinct cohesive energies. Differences in cohesive energy are traced back to slight changes in the distribu…
We report the density-functional calculations that systematically clarify the stable forms of carbon-related defects and their energy levels in amorphous SiO$_2$ using the melt-quench technique in molecular dynamics. Considering the position dependence of the O chemical potential near and far from the SiC/SiO$_2$ interface, we determine the most abundant forms of carbon-related defects: Far from the interface, the CO$_2$ or CO in the internal space in SiO$_2$ is abundant and they are electronically inactive; near the interface, the carbon clustering is likely and a particular mono-carbon defec…
The growth of thin amorphous hydrogenated carbon films (a-C:H) on diamond (111) surface from the bombardment of CH2 radicals is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The structural analysis shows that the local structure (e.g., the first coordination number of C atoms) of a-C:H depends critically on the content of hydrogen. The increase of kinetic energy of incident radicals leads to the decrease of hydrogen content, which subsequently changes the ratio of sp3 bonded C atoms in a-C:H.
Free-standing monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) is a pure carbon structure composed of randomly distributed atom rings with different sizes, which was recently synthesized. In this work, we carried out ab initio and tight-binding calculations to investigate the optoelectronic properties of MAC and its derived nanotube and nanoscroll configurations. Our results show MAC, tube, and scrolls exhibit similar electronic behavior. All structures absorb from infrared to ultraviolet, with maximum absorption peaks the visible-ultra violet ($\sim 3.2$ eV). The maximum and minimum reflectivity values are i…
Using Monte Carlo simulations within the empirical potential approach, we examine the effect produced by the surface environment on the atomic level stresses in tetrahedral amorphous carbon. Both the distribution of stresses and the distributions of sp^2 and sp^3 atoms as a function of depth from the surface are highly inhomogeneous. They show the same close relationship between local stress and bonding hybridization found previously in the bulk of the material. Compressive local stress favors the formation of sp^3 sites, while tensile stress favors the formation of sp^2 sites.
A 3 nm coronene coating and a 4 nm amorphous carbon coating with uniform shell-core encapsulation structure for nanosized boron (B) powders are formed by a simple process, where coronene is directly mixing with boron particles without a solvent, and heated at 520 °C for 1 h or at 630 °C for 3 h in a vacuum-sealed silica tube. Coronene has a melting point lower than its decomposition temperature, which enables liquid coronene to cover B particles by liquid diffusion and penetration without the need for a solvent. The diffusion and penetration of coronene can extend to the boundaries of particle…
Amorphous carbon (a-C) materials have diverse interesting and useful properties, but the understanding of their atomic-scale structures is still incomplete. Here, we report on extensive atomistic simulations of the deposition and growth of a-C films, describing interatomic interactions using a machine learning (ML) based Gaussian Approximation Potential (GAP) model. We expand widely on our initial work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 166101 (2018)] by now considering a broad range of incident ion energies, thus modeling samples that span the entire range from low-density ($sp^{2}$-rich) to high-density…
A thorough critical analysis of the theoretical relationships between the bond-angle dispersion in a-Si and the width of the transverse optical (TO) Raman peak is presented. It is shown that the discrepancies between them are drastically reduced when unified definitions for these magnitudes are used. This reduced dispersion in the predicted values of the bond-angle dispersion together with the broad agreement with its scarce direct determinations is then used to analyze the strain energy in partially relaxed pure a-Si. It is concluded that defect annihilation does not contribute appreciably to…
We present results of carbon coatings on metal substrates in cylindrical hollow cathode (CHC) direct current magnetron sputtering. This is a new technique of making amorphous carbon film in CHC magnetron sputtering from regenerative sooting discharge. The carbon films are deposited on Cu and Al substrates in Ne atmosphere and compared with the films of carbon soot on the same materials produced from conventional arc discharge between graphite electrodes at 80 Angstrom in He background. The films are characterized using online emission, Raman, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; X-ray …
We deform representative volume elements of amorphous carbon obtained from melt-quenches in molecular dynamics calculations using bond-order and machine learning interatomic potentials. A Drucker-Prager law with a zero-pressure flow stress of $41.2$~GPa and an internal friction coefficient of $0.39$ describes the deviatoric stress during flow as a function of pressure. We identify the mean coordination number as the order parameter describing this flow surface. However, a description of the dynamical relaxation of the quenched samples towards steady-state flow requires an additional order para…
We report the production and characterization of a form of amorphous carbon films with sp/sp2 hybridization (atomic fraction of sp hybridized species > 20%) where the predominant sp bonding appears to be (=C=C=)n cumulene. Vibrational and electronic properties have been studied by in situ Raman spectroscopy and electrical conductivity measurements. Cumulenic chains are substantially stable for temperatures lower than 250 K and they influence the electrical transport properties of the sp/sp2 carbon through a self-doping mechanism by pinning the Fermi level closer to one of the mobility gap edge…
We have studied the shock-induced phase transition from fullerite to a dense amorphous carbon phase by tight-binding molecular dynamics. For increasing hydrostatic pressures P, the C60-cages are found to polymerise at P<10 GPa, to break at P~40 GPa and to slowly collapse further at P>60 GPa. By contrast, in the presence of additional shear stresses, the cages are destroyed at much lower pressures (P<30 GPa). We explain this fact in terms of a continuum model, the snap-through instability of a spherical shell. Surprisingly, the relaxed high-density structures display no intermediate-range order…
We carried out a joint analysis of the INS, DRIFT, and XPS spectra of a set of sp2 amorphous carbons of the highest carbonization rank representing natural substances (shungite carbon, anthraxolite, and anthracite), technical graphenes (laboratory reduced graphene oxides), and industrial products (carbon blacks). It was determined, that the DRIFT spectra of the studied substances consist of two components determined by hydrogen and oxygen compositions in the circumference of graphene molecules, which represent the basic structural units of amorphic compounds. Methine groups typify the hydrogen…
The short and intermediate range order of an amorphous GeSe$_4$ alloy produced by Mechanical Alloying were studied by Reverse Monte Carlo simulations of its x-ray total structure factor and Raman scattering. The simulations were used to compute the $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Ge}}(r)$, $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Se}}(r)$ and $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Se-Se}}(r)$ partial distribution functions and the ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Ge}}(K)$, ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Se}}(K)$ and ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Se-Se}}(K)$ partial structure factors. We calculated the coordination numbers and i…
Inclusions of sp-hybridised, trans-polyacetylene [trans-(CH)x] and poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) chains are revealed using resonant Raman scattering (RRS) investigation of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films in the near IR - UV range. The RRS spectra of trans-(CH)x core Ag modes and the PPV CC-H phenylene mode are found to transform and disperse as the laser excitation energy \hbarωL is increased from near IR through visible to UV, whereas sp-bonded inclusions only become evident in UV. This is attributed to \hbarωL probing of trans-(CH)x chain inhomogeneity and the distribution of …
We report on an inelastic (Raman) light scattering study of the local structure of amorphous GeTe films. A detailed analysis of the temperature-reduced Raman spectra has shown that appreciable structural changes occur as a function of temperature. These changes involve modifications of atomic arrangements such as to facilitate the rapid amorphous-to-crystal transformation, which is the major advantage of phase-change materials used in optical data storage media. A particular structural model, supported by polarization analysis, is proposed being compatible with the experimental data as regards…
Raman spectroscopy has been employed to distinguish between the Raman spectrum of pristine hydrogenated diamond like carbon (PHDLC) and that of electrochemically hydrogenated diamond like carbon (ECHDLC). The enhancement of the background photoluminescence (PL) in the Raman spectrum and broadening of PL spectrum of ECHDLC are identified to be due to increase of sp3 C-H density onto the PHDLC surface, during novel electrochemical process of hydrogenation of sp2 C=C into sp3 C-H.
The short and intermediate range order of an amorphous Ge$_{30}$Se$_{70}$ alloy produced by Mechanical Alloying were studied by Reverse Monte Carlo simulations of its x-ray total structure factor, Raman scattering and differential scanning calorimetry. The simulations were used to compute the $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Ge}}(r)$, $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Se}}(r)$ and $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Se-Se}}(r)$ partial distribution functions and the ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Ge}}(K)$, ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Se}}(K)$ and ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Se-Se}}(K)$ partial structure factors.…
The synthesis of polymer-like amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin-films by microwave excited collisional hydrocarbon plasma process is reported. Stable and highly aromatic a-C:H were obtained containing significant inclusions of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV). PPV confers universal optoelectronic properties to the synthesised material. That is a-C:H with tailor-made refractive index are capable of becoming absorption-free in visible (red) - near infrared wavelength range. Production of large aromatic hydrocarbon including phenyl clusters and/or particles is attributed to enhanced coagulation of el…
We investigate the amorphous structure, chemical bonding, and electrical properties of magnetron sputtered Fe1-xCx (0.21<x<0.72) thin films. X-ray, electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy show that the Fe1-xCx films are amorphous nanocomposites, consisting of a two-phase domain structure with Fe-rich carbidic FeCy, and a carbon-rich matrix. Pair distribution function analysis indicates a close-range order similar to those of crystalline Fe3C carbides in all films with additional graphene-like structures at high carbon content (71.8 at% C). From X-ray photoelectron spectroscop…
The deposition of boron-doped amorphous carbon thin films on SiO2 substrate was achieved via a focused ion beam-assisted chemical vapor deposition of triphenyl borane (C18H15B) and triphenyl borate (C18H15BO3). The existence of boron in the deposited film from triphenyl borane, with a precursor temperature of 90 °C, was confirmed by a core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The film exhibited a semiconducting behavior with a band gap of 285 meV. Although the band gap was decreased to 197 meV after an annealing process, the film was still semiconductor. Additionally, a drastic red…
Theoretical calculations of the elastic response of carbon composites and amorphous carbon are reported. The studied composites consist of crystalline nanoinclusions, either spherical diamonds or carbon nanotubes, embedded in amorphous carbon matrices. The elastic constants of the composites were calculated and found to systematically increase as the density increases. The elastic recovery under hydrostatic pressure for all structures was also investigated and was found to be significantly high for both nanocomposite and amorphous carbon, but decreases as the material becomes more dilute.
New carbon forms exhibiting extraordinary physico-chemical properties can be generated from nanostructured precursors under extreme pressure. Nevertheless, synthesis of such fascinating materials is often not well understood that results, as is the case of C60 precursor, in irreproducibility of the results and impeding further progress in the materials design. Here the semiconducting amorphous carbon having bandgaps of 0.1-0.3 eV and the advantages of isotropic superhardness and superior toughness over single-crystal diamond and inorganic glasses are produced from transformation of fullerene a…
By molecular dynamics simulation, the chemical vapor deposition of amorphous carbon onto graphite and diamond surfaces was studied. In particular, we investigated the effect of source H/C ratio, which is the ratio of the number of hydrogen atoms to the number of carbon atoms in a source gas, on the deposition process. In the present simulation, the following two source gas conditions were tested: one was that the source gas was injected as isolated carbon and hydrogen atoms, and the other was that the source gas was injected as hydrocarbon molecules. Under the former condition, we found that a…

In this work, we studied amorphous carbon ($a$-C) thin films deposited using direct current (dc) and high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) techniques. The microstructure and electronic properties reveal subtle differences in $a$-C thin films deposited by two techniques. While, films deposited with dcMS have a smooth texture typically found in $a$-C thin films, those deposited with HiPIMS consist of dense hillocks surrounded by a porous microstructure. The density of $a$-C thin films is a decisive parameter to judge their quality. Often, x-ray reflectivity (XRR) has been used to meas…
We present an analysis of deep-UV Raman measurements of graphite, graphene and carbon nanotubes. For excitation energies above the strong optical absorption peak at the $M$ point in the Brillouin zone ($\approx 4.7\,\text{eV}$), we partially suppress double-resonant scattering processes and observe the two-phonon density of states of carbon nanomaterials. The measured peaks are assigned to contributions from LO, TO, and LA phonon branches, supported by calculations of the phonon dispersion. Moreover, we gain access to the infrared-active $E_{1u}$ mode in graphite. By lowering the excitation en…
Fabrication of graphene field effect transistor is described which uses an intrinsic graphene on the surface of as deposited hydrogenated amorphous carbon films. Ambipolar characteristic has been demonstrated typical for graphene devices, which changes to unipolar characteristic if the surface graphene was etched in oxygen plasma. Because amorphous carbon films can be growth easily, with unlimited dimensions and no transfer of graphene is necessary, this can open new perspective for graphene electronics.
By using molecular dynamics simulation, formation mechanisms of amorphous carbon in particular sp${}^3$ rich structure was researched. The problem that reactive empirical bond order potential cannot represent amorphous carbon properly was cleared in the transition process from graphite to diamond by high pressure and the deposition process of amorphous carbon thin films. Moreover, the new potential model which is based on electron distribution simplified as a point charge was developed by using downfolding method. As a result, the molecular dynamics simulation with the new potential could demo…
We shed light on the catalyst-free growth of graphene from amorphous carbon (a-C) by current-induced annealing by witnessing the mechanism both with in-situ transmission electron microscopy and with molecular dynamics simulations. Both in experiment and in simulation, we observe that small a-C clusters on top of a graphene substrate rearrange and crystallize into graphene patches. The process is aided by the high temperatures involved and by the van der Waals interactions with the substrate. Furthermore, in the presence of a-C, graphene can grow from the borders of holes and form a seamless gr…
We investigate vibration modes and their Raman activity of single-walled carbon nanotubes that are bent within their intrinsic elastic limits. By implementing novel boundary conditions for density-functional based tight-binding, and using non-resonant bond polarization theory, we discover that Raman activity can be induced by bending. Depending on the degree of bending, high-energy Raman peaks change their positions and intensities significantly. These effects can be explained by migration of nodes and antinodes along tube circumference. We discuss the challenge of associating the predicted sp…
We present a fast and simple way to determine the erosion rate and absorption coefficient of hydrogenated amorphous carbon films exposed to a hydrogen atomic source based on ex-situ Raman micro-spectroscopy. Results are compared to ellipsometry measurement. The method is applied to films eroded at different temperatures. A maximum of the erosion rate is found at ~ 450 {\degree}C in agreement with previous results. This technique is suitable for future quantitative studies on the erosion of thin carbonaceous films, especially of interest for plasma wall interactions occurring in thermonuclear f…
Recently (C.-T. Toh et al., Nature 577, 199 (2020)), the first synthesis of free-standing monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) was achieved. MAC is a pure carbon structure composed of five, six, seven and eight atom rings randomly distributed. MAC proved to be surprisingly stable and highly fracture resistant. Its electronic properties are similar to boron nitride. In this work, we have investigated the mechanical properties and thermal stability of MAC models using fully-atomistic reactive molecular dynamics simulations. For comparison purposes, the results are contrasted against pristine graphen…
We show that single walled carbon nanotubes with different isotope compositions exhibit distinct Raman Gband peaks and can be used for multiplexed multi-color Raman imaging of biological systems. Cancer cells with specific receptors are selectively labeled with 3 differently colored SWNTs conjugated with various targeting ligands including Herceptin, anti-Her2, Erbitux, anti-Her1, and RGD peptide, allowing for multi-color Raman imaging of cells in a multiplexed manner. SWNT Raman signals are highly robust against photo-bleaching, allowing long term imaging and tracking. With narrow peak featur…
The paper presents a joint consideration of Raman spectra of sp2 amorphous carbons alongside with the nature and type of their amorphicity. The latter was attributed to the enforced fragmentation. The fragments, presented with size-restricted graphene domains with heteroatom necklaces in the circumference, are the basic structural units (BSUs) of the solids, determining them as amorphics with molecular structure. The standard G-D-2D pattern of Raman spectra of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, sp2 amorphous carbons, graphene and/or graphite crystal is attributed to BSUs graphene domains. The m…
Under the challenge of growing a single bilayer of Bi oriented in the (111) crystallographic direction over amorphous substrates, we have studied different thicknesses of Bi thermally evaporated onto silicon oxide in order to shed light on the dominant atomic structures and their oxidation. We have employed atomic force microscope, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope approaches to demonstrate that Bi is crystalline and oriented in the (111) direction for thicknesses over 20 nm. Surprisingly, Raman spectroscopy indicates that the rhombohedral structure is preserved even for ultr…
Ratio of the intensity of D- Raman peak and G- Raman peak (ID/IG) is often used for characterization of diamond-like carbon films, for example to estimate number and size of the sp2 clusters. In this paper we investigate how the interference effects in the film influence this ratio. It is shown that for films on silicon substrates the distortion of the real ratio can reach 10 % and for films on metals even 40 %. This should be taken into account if some conclusions are made from the measured ID/IG ratio.
The lineshapes of the Raman excitation profiles for radial breathing modes in carbon nanotubes are shown to be strongly affected by interference effects that arise whenever strong optical transitions are separated by a small energy. This is the case in metallic zigzag and chiral tubes, where one-dimensional singularities in the electronic joint density of states are split due to the trigonal warping of the electronic band structure of two-dimensional graphene. It is shown that the proper modeling of these interferences is crucial for the identification of the (n,m) indices using Raman spectros…
Raman micro/macro-spectroscopy allows for a non-destructive remote analysis: body and glaze, crystalline and amorphous phases can be identified, including the nanosized pigments colouring the glaze. Last generation instruments are portable which allows for examination in museum, on sites, etc. This paper gives an overview on the potential of Raman spectrometry technique to analyze ancient ceramics and glasses. Selected glasses as well as glazes of various porcelains, celadon, faiences and potteries, representative of the different production technologies used in the Antique, European, Mediterr…
A microscopic model, which describes specific features of the electronic spectrum of various allotropic forms of amorphous carbon as being responsible for their structure peculiarities, is presented. It is shown that the formation of a double-well potential is a possible driving force for this behavior.
