We present a comparative ab initio computational study of sodium and lithium storage in amorphous (glassy) carbon (a-C) vs. graphite. Amorphous structures are obtained by fitting stochastically generated structures to a reference radial distribution function. Li insertion is thermodynamically favored in both graphite and a-C. While sodium insertion is thermodynamically unfavored in graphite, a-C possesses multiple insertion sites with binding energies stronger than Na cohesive energy, making it usable as anode material for Na-ion batteries.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted a great deal of attention as potential low-cost energy storage alternatives to Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the intrinsic safety and great abundance of sodium on Earth. For developing competitive SIBs, highly efficient anode materials with large capacity and rapid ion diffusion are indispensable. In this study, a two-dimensional (2D) Dirac monolayer, that is borophosphene, is proposed to be a promising anode material for high performance SIBs on the basis of density functional theory calculations. The performances of Na adsorption and diffusion…
Phosphorus is one of the most promising anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Little is known about the structural mechanism of Na/P cycling due to the fact that only one of the structures involved (Na3P) is crystalline. Using operando X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT) analysed by Rietveld and pair distribution (PDF) methods combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations we show that the sodiation and desodiation mechanisms of phosphorus are very different. Sodiation follows the thermodynamic path of lowest energy from P via NaP to Na3P while desodiation follows a ki…
The abundance of Sodium (Na), its low-cost, and low reduction potential provide a lucrative inexpensive, safe, and environmentally benign alternative to Lithium Ion Batteries (LIBs). The significant challenges in advancing Sodium Ion Battery (NIB) technologies lies in finding the better electrode materials. Experimental investigations revealed the real potency of Germanium (Ge) as suitable anode materials for NIBs. However, a systematic atomistic study is necessary to understand the fundamental aspects of capacity-voltage correlation, microstructural changes of Ge, as well as diffusion kinetic…
Developing efficient anode materials with low electrode voltage, high specific capacity and superior rate capability is urgently required on the road to commercially viable sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Aiming at finding a new SIB anode material, we investigate the electrochemical properties of NaxTiO2 compounds with unprecedented penta-oxygen-coordinated trigonal bipyramid (TB) structures by using the first-principles calculations. Identifying the four different TB phases, we perform the optimization of their crystal structures and calculate their energetics such as sodium binding energy, form…
Phosphorus has received recent attention in the context of high-capacity and high-rate anodes for lithium and sodium-ion batteries. Here, we present a first principles structure prediction study combined with NMR calculations which gives us insights into its lithiation/sodiation process. We report a variety of new phases phases found by AIRSS and the atomic species swapping methods. Of particular interest, a stable Na$_5$P$_4$-C2/m structure and locally stable structures found less than 10 meV/f.u. from the convex hull, such as Li$_4$P$_3$-P2$_1$2$_1$2$_1$, NaP$_5$-Pnma and Na$_4$P$_3$-Cmcm. Sodium ion batteries become popular due to their low cost. Among possible anode materials of sodium ion batteries, phosphorus has great potential owing to its high theoretical capacity. Previous research that yielded high capacity and long duration of phosphorus anode used expensive materials such as black phosphorus (BP) and phosphorene. To take advantage of the low cost of sodium ion batteries, we report a simple and low-cost method to fabricate anode: condensing red phosphorus on carbon xerogel. Even with large particle size (~ 50 $μ$m) and high mass loading (2 mg cm$^{-2}$), the composite …
Bismuth has recently attracted interest in connection with Na-ion battery anodes due to its high volumetric capacity. It reacts with Na to form Na$_3$Bi which is a prototypical Dirac semimetal with a nontrivial electronic structure. Density-functional-theory based first-principles calculations are playing a key role in understanding the fascinating electronic structure of Na$_3$Bi and other topological materials. In particular, the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) meta-generalized-gradient-approximation (meta-GGA) has shown significant improvement over the widely used gener…
Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as an efficient alternative for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to the natural abundance and low cost of sodium than lithium. In this context, the anode materials play a vital role in rechargeable batteries to acquire high energy and power density. In order to demonstrate transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) as potential anode materials, we have synthesized MoSeTe sample by conventional flux method, and the structure and morphology are characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission el…
Among the recent achievements of sodium-ion battery (SIB) electrode materials, hybridization of two-dimentional (2D) materials is one of the most interesting appointments. In this work, we propose to use the 2D hybrid composites of SnS2 with graphene or graphene oxide (GO) layers as SIB anode, based on the first-principles calculations of their atomic structures, sodium intercalation energetics and electronic properties. The calculations reveal that graphene or GO film can effectively support not only the stable formation of hetero-interface with the SnS2 layer but also the easy intercalation …

Magnesium (Mg) metal has been widely explored as an anode material for Mg-ion batteries (MIBs) owing to its large specific capacity and dendrite-free operation. However critical challenges, such as the formation of passivation layers during battery operation and anode-electrolyte-cathode incompatibilities, limit the practical application of Mg-metal anodes for MIBs. Motivated by the promise of group XIV elements (namely Si, Ge and Sn) as anodes for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries, here we conduct systematic first principles calculations to explore the thermodynamics and kinetics of group XIV…
The cointercalation of sodium with the solvent organic molecule into graphite can resolve difficulty of forming the stage-I Na-graphite intercalation compound, which is a predominant anode of Na-ion battery. To clarify the mechanism of such cointercalation, we investigate the atomistic structure, energetics, electrochemical properties, ion and electron conductance, and charge transferring upon de/intercalation of the solvated Na-diglyme ion into graphite with {\it ab initio} calculations. It is found that the Na(digl)$_2$C$_n$ compound has the negatively lowest intercalation energy at $n\appro…
We report the electrochemical investigation of 5% Al doped MoS$_2$@rGO composite as a high-performance anode for sodium (Na)-ion batteries. The x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterizations reveal that the Al doping increase the interlayer spacing of (002) plane of MoS$_2$ nanosheets and form a stable 1T phase. The galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements show the specific capacity stable around 450, 400, 350, 300 and 200 mAhg$^{-1}$ at current densities of 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1~Ag$^{-1}$, respectively. Also, we observ…
To assess the potential of amorphous Si (a-Si) as an anode for Li, Na, and Mg-ion batteries, the energetics of Li, Na, and Mg atoms in a-Si are computed from first-principles and compared to those in crystalline Si (c-Si). It is shown that Si preamorphization increases the average anode voltage and reduces the volume expansion of the anode during the insertion of the metal atoms. Analysis of computed formation energies of Li, Na, and Mg defects in a-Si and c-Si suggests that the energetics of the single atoms into a-Si are thermodynamically more favorable. For instance, defect formation energi…

Using the first-principles calculations, we report the existence of the single-layer (SL) di-titanium oxide Ti$_2$O (labeled as MOene) that constructs a novel family of MXene based on transition metal oxides. This MOene material strongly contrasts the conventional ones consisting of transition metal carbides and/or nitrides. SL Ti$_2$O has high thermal and dynamical stabilities due to the strong Ti$-$O ionic bonding interactions. Moreover, this material is an intrinsic electride and exhibits extremely low diffusion barriers of $\sim$12.0 and 6.3 meV for Li- and Na diffusion, respectively. When…
Due to its exceptional lithium storage capacity silicon is considered as a promising candidate for anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In the present work we demonstrate that methods of the soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) can be used as a powerful tool for the comprehensive analysis of the electronic and structural properties of lithium silicides Li$_{x}$Si forming in LIB's anode upon Si lithiation. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations it is shown that coordination of Si atoms in Li$_{x}$Si decreases with increase in Li con…
While Si is an effective insertion type anode for Li-ion batteries, crystalline Si has been shown to be unsuitable for Na and Mg storage due, in particular, to insufficient binding strength. It has recently been reported that Si nanowires could be synthesized with high-concentration (several atomic %) and dispersed Al doping. Here we show based on density functional theory calculations that Al doping significantly improves the energetics for Na and Mg insertion, specifically, making it thermodynamically favored versus vacuum reference states. For high Al concentrations, the energy of Mg in Al-…
Due to its unique physical and chemical properties, graphene is being considered as a promising material for energy conversion and storage applications. Introduction of functional groups and dopants on/in graphene is a useful strategy for tuning its properties. In order to fully exploit its potential, atomic-level understanding of its interaction with species of importance for such applications is required. We present a DFT study of the interaction of sodium atoms with epoxy-graphene and analyze how this interaction is affected upon doping with boron and nitrogen. We demonstrate how the dopant…
It is shown that continuously occurring electrolyte-reduction reaction on freshly-exposed electrode surfaces during lithiation/delithiation cycles causes the lowering of cycling efficiency, and hence, capacity fade in well-cycled silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Using galvanostatic lithiation/delithiation data from multiple cycles on a Li/Si half-cell, a methodology to separate the charge due to the main reaction (lithiation/delithiation of Si) from the side-reaction (electrolyte-reduction) is presented. The rate of this parasitic side reaction is estimated on well-cycled amorphous sil…
Controlling nanostructure from molecular, crystal lattice to the electrode level remains as arts in practice, where nucleation and growth of the crystals still require more fundamental understanding and precise control to shape the microstructure of metal deposits and their properties. This is vital to achieve dendrite-free Li metal anodes with high electrochemical reversibility for practical high-energy rechargeable Li batteries. Here, cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy was used to capture the dynamic growth and atomic structure of Li metal deposits at the early nucleation stage, in w…
The practical application of sodium-ion hybrid capacitors is limited by their low energy densities resulted from the kinetics mismatch between cathodes and anodes, and the fire safety related to the flammable electrolyte-separator system. Hence, we report a rational design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, UiO-66) modified PVDF-HFP separator. High tensile strength and dimensional thermal stability of the separator reduce the risk of electrode short circuit caused by the separator deformation. MCC test demonstrates a reduction of 75% in peak heat release rate (pHRR), indicating an enhanced fir…
Cycling efficiency and rate capability of porous copper-coated, amorphous silicon thin-film negative electrodes are compared to equivalent silicon thin-film electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. The presence of a copper layer coated on the active material plays a beneficial role in increasing the cycling efficiency and the rate capability of silicon thin-film electrodes. Between 3C and C/8 discharge rates, the available cell energy decreased by 8% and 18% for 40 nm copper-coated silicon and equivalent silicon thin-film electrodes, respectively. Copper-coated silicon thin-film electrodes also sh…
Inspired by a recent experimental and theoretical study [Yang et al., 2017], wherein protrusions in graphene have been proposed as an effective strategy to enhance the performance of sodium ion batteries, a comprehensive study of the effects of phosphorus doping in graphene on adsorption and diffusion behaviour of Li is carried out by using density functional theory. We find that protrusion introduced by P-dopant in graphene enhances the adsorption of a single Li atom onto the anode due to an additional partial covalent bonding character between Li and carbon atoms of the substrate. However, w…
Batteries are the most abundant form of electrochemical energy storage. Lithium and sodium ion batteries account for a significant portion of the battery market, but high-performance electrochemically active materials still need to be discovered and optimized for these technologies. Recently, tin(II) oxide (SnO) has emerged as a highly-promising battery electrode. In this work, we present a facile synthesis method to produce SnO nanoparticles whose size and shape can be tailored by changing the solvent nature. We study the complex relationship between wet chemistry synthesis conditions and res…
Amorphous phosphorus (a-P) has long attracted interest because of its complex atomic structure, and more recently as an anode material for batteries. However, accurately describing and understanding a-P at the atomistic level remains a challenge. Here we show that large-scale molecular-dynamics simulations, enabled by a machine learning (ML)-based interatomic potential for phosphorus, can give new insights into the atomic structure of a-P and how this structure changes under pressure. The structural model so obtained contains abundant five-membered rings, as well as more complex seven- and eig…
We present a comparative ab initio study of Li and Na insertion in molecular (van der Waals) crystals of TCNE (tetracyanoethylene) as well as in covalent Li/Na-TCNE crystals. We confirm the structure of previously synthesized (covalent) Li-TCNE crystal as well as predict the existence of its Na-TCNE analogue. In the molecular/covalent TCNE crystals, insertion sites are identified with the binding energy of Li and Na up to 2.7/1.8 and 2.6/1.8 eV stronger than Li and Na cohesive energy, respectively, in dilute concentrations. Up to 5.5/2.5 and 3/2 Li and Na atoms per TCNE unit can be inserted in…
Na2Ti3O7, as one of the most potential anode electrode materials, is expected to play an important role in various fields. In this work, we synthesized uniform hollow octahedral Na2Ti3O7 particles through directly sintering a kind of precursors obtained by (NH4)2TiF6 and NH4OH in the presence of sodium-containing cationic polyacrylamide. XRD, SEM, TEM were used to characterize precursors and Na2Ti3O7 particles. In addition, the synthesis conditions and the formation mechanism were discussed in detail. This single-source molten salt method is flexible, efficient and controllable. Moreover, the …
Amorphous polymer derived silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) is an attractive candidate for Lithium ion battery anodes, as an alternative to graphite, which is limited to a theoretical capacity of 372 mAh/g. However, SiOC tends to exhibit poor transport properties and cycling performance as a result of sparsely distributed carbon clusters and inefficient active sites. To overcome these limitations, we designed and fabricated a layered graphene SiOC heterostructure by solvent assisted infiltration of a polymeric precursor into a modified three dimensional graphene aerogel skeleton. The use of a high mel…

Iron and cobalt distannides \ce{MSn2} (M = Fe, Co) are regarded as a promising conversion-type anode material for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries, but their properties are not well understood. In this work, we report a first-principles study of alkali metal (A = Li, Na) substitutional effect on the structural, mechanical, lattice vibrational, electronic and defect properties of these distannides. Special attention is paid to systematic comparison between \ce{FeSn2} and \ce{CoSn2}. Our calculations reveal that M/A substitution induces a lattice expansion and decrease of elastic constants, whi…
Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is an amorphous solid-state lithium ion conductor displaying exemplary cyclability against lithium metal anodes. There is no definitive explanation for this stability due to the limited understanding of the structure of LiPON. We provide a structural model of RF-sputtered LiPON via experimental and computational spectroscopic methods. Information about the short-range structure results from 1D and 2D solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance experiments investigating chemical shift anisotropy and dipolar interactions. These results are compared with first pri…
Black phosphorous is a layered material having a high capacity of 2596 mAh/g as a battery electrode, however it suffers from cracking due to high volume expansion during lithiation. These cracks causes loss of electrical contact in the whole material, therefore capacity fades after further cycles of charging and discharging. One needs a support material which would not crack with lithiation of phosphorous in order to keep the electrical contact of the material. Here, we considered phosphorene sandwiched between graphene layers. By using density functional theory, we calculated voltages of lith…
X-ray amorphous manganese oxides were prepared by reduction of sodium permanganate by lithium iodide in aqueous medium (MnOx-I) and by decomposition of manganese carbonate at moderate temperature (MnOx-C). TEM showed that these materials are not amorphous, but nanostructured, with a prominent spinel substructure in MnOx-C. These materials intercalate lithium with capacities up to 200 mAh/g at first cycle (potential window 1.8-4.3 V) and 175 mAh/g at 100th cycle. Best performances for MnOx-C are obtained with cobalt doping. Potential electrochemical spectroscopy shows that the initial discharge…
