Recently (C.-T. Toh et al., Nature 577, 199 (2020)), the first synthesis of free-standing monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) was achieved. MAC is a pure carbon structure composed of five, six, seven and eight atom rings randomly distributed. MAC proved to be surprisingly stable and highly fracture resistant. Its electronic properties are similar to boron nitride. In this work, we have investigated the mechanical properties and thermal stability of MAC models using fully-atomistic reactive molecular dynamics simulations. For comparison purposes, the results are contrasted against pristine graphene (PG) models of similar dimensions. Our results show that MAC and PG exhibit distinct mechanical behavior and fracture dynamics patterns. While PG after a critical strain threshold goes directly from elastic to brittle regimes, MAC shows different elastic stages between these two regimes. Remarkably, MAC is thermally stable up to 3600 K, which is close to the PG melting point. These exceptional physical properties make MAC-based materials promising candidates for new technologies, such as flexible electronics.
The structure of amorphous materials has been debated since the 1930's as a binary question: amorphous materials are either Zachariasen continuous random networks (Z-CRNs) or Z-CRNs containing crystallites. It was recently demonstrated, however, that amorphous diamond can be synthesized in either form. Here we address the question of the structure of single-atom-thick amorphous monolayers. We reanalyze the results of prior simulations for amorphous graphene and report kinetic Monte Carlo simulations based on alternative algorithms. We find that crystallite-containing Z-CRN is the favored struc…
The properties of pristine, free-standing graphene monolayers prepared by mechanical exfoliation of graphite are investigated. The graphene monolayers, suspended over open trenches, are examined by means of spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy of the G-, D-, and 2D-phonon modes. The G-mode phonons exhibit reduced energies (1580 cm-1) and increased widths (14 cm-1) compared to the response of graphene monolayers supported on the SiO2 covered substrate. From analysis of the G-mode Raman spectra, we deduce that the free-standing graphene monolayers are essentially undoped, with an upper bound of…
Bulk amorphous materials have been studied extensively and are widely used, yet their atomic arrangement remains an open issue. Although they are generally believed to be Zachariasen continuous random networks, recent experimental evidence favours the competing crystallite model in the case of amorphous silicon. In two-dimensional materials, however, the corresponding questions remain unanswered. Here we report the synthesis, by laser-assisted chemical vapour deposition, of centimetre-scale, free-standing, continuous and stable monolayer amorphous carbon, topologically distinct from disordered…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials like graphene and h-BN usually show high thermal conductivity, which enables rich applications in thermal dissipation and nanodevices. Disorder, on the other hand, is often present in 2D materials. Structural disorder induces localization of electrons and phonons and alters the electronic, mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties. Here we calculate the in-plane thermal conductivity of both monolayer carbon and monolayer boron nitride in the amorphous form, by reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the thermal conductivity of both …
Large scale, homogeneous quasi-free standing monolayer graphene is obtained on cubic silicon carbide, i.e. the 3C-SiC(111) surface, which represents an appealing and cost effective platform for graphene growth. The quasi-free monolayer is produced by intercalation of hydrogen under the interfacial, (6root3x6root3)R30-reconstructed carbon layer. After intercalation, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals sharp linear pi-bands. The decoupling of graphene from the substrate is identified by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Atomi…

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been used to improve both the positive and negative bias-stress stability of amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) bottom gate thin film transistors (TFTs). N-hexylphosphonic acid (HPA) and fluorinated hexylphosphonic acid (FPA) SAMs adsorbed on IGZO back channel surfaces were shown to significantly reduce bias stress turn-on voltage shifts compared to IGZO back channel surfaces with no SAMs. FPA was found to have a lower surface energy and lower packing density than HPA, as well as lower bias stress turn-on voltage shifts. The improved stability of I…
Determination of the Spacing Between Hydrogen-Intercalated Quasi-Free-Standing Monolayer Graphene and 6H-SiC(0001) Using Total-Reflection High-Energy Positron Diffraction
We investigate the morphology of quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG) formed at several temperatures by hydrogen intercalation and discuss its relationship with transport properties. Features corresponding to incomplete hydrogen intercalation at the graphene-substrate interface are observed by scanning tunneling microscopy on QFMLG formed at 600 and 800°C. They contribute to carrier scattering as charged impurities. Voids in the SiC substrate and wrinkling of graphene appear at 1000°C, and they decrease the carrier mobility significantly.
We present a study of quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene obtained by intercalation of Au atoms at the interface between the carbon buffer layer (Bu-L) and the silicon-terminated face (0001) of 4H-silicon carbide. Au intercalation is achieved by deposition of atomically thin Au on the Bu-L followed by annealing at 850 °C in an Argon atmosphere. We explore the intercalation of Au and decoupling of the Bu-L into quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene by surface science characterizations and electron transport in top-gated electronic devices. By gate-dependent magnetotransport we find that the…
Quasi-free standing epitaxial graphene is obtained on SiC(0001) by hydrogen intercalation. The hydrogen moves between the 6root3 reconstructed initial carbon layer and the SiC substrate. The topmost Si atoms which for epitaxial graphene are covalently bound to this buffer layer, are now saturated by hydrogen bonds. The buffer layer is turned into a quasi-free standing graphene monolayer with its typical linear pi-bands. Similarly, epitaxial monolayer graphene turns into a decoupled bilayer. The intercalation is stable in air and can be reversed by annealing to around 900 degrees Celsius.
Continuum modeling of a free-standing graphene monolayer, viewed as a two dimensional 2-lattice, requires specifications of the components of the shift vector that act as an auxiliary variable. The field equations are then the equations ruling the shift vector, together with momentum and moment of momentum equations. To introduce material linearity energy is assumed to have a quadratic dependence on the strain tensor, the curvature tensor, the shift vector, as well as to combinations of them. Hexagonal symmetry then reduces the overall number of independent material constants to nine. We prese…
Recent experiment demonstrated the formation of free-standing Au monolayers by exposing Au-Ag alloy to electron beam irradiation. Inspired by this discovery, we used semi-empirical effective medium theory simulations to investigate monolayer formation in 30 different binary metal alloys composed of late d-series metals Ni, Cu, Pd, Ag, Pt, and Au. In qualitative agreement with the experiment, we find that the beam energy required to dealloy Ag atoms from Au-Ag alloy is smaller than the energy required to break the dealloyed Au monolayer. Our simulations suggest that similar method could also be…
Magnetic anisotropy, spin wave (SW) excitation and exchange stiffness constant of amorphous FeTaC ($d$ = 20-200 nm) films were studied as a function of thickness using micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance (MS-FMR) technique. The MS-FMR spectra for in-plane applied magnetic field show the presence of uniform precessional mode ($n$ = 0) along with first perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) mode ($n$ = 1) especially for $d$ = 50, 100 and 200 nm films. The angular ($φ_{H}$) dependence of resonance field ($H_{r}$) and magnetic field dependence of resonance frequencies ($f_{r}$) in planar configur…
Normal mode decomposition of atomic vibrations has been used to provide microscopic under-standing of thermal transport in amorphous solids for decades. In normal mode methods, it is naturally assumed that atoms vibrate around their equilibrium positions and that individual normal modes are the fundamental vibrational excitations transporting heat. With the abundance of predictions from normal mode methods and experimental measurements now available, we care-fully analyze these calculations in amorphous silicon, a model amorphous solid. We find a number of discrepancies, suggesting that treati…
Surface resistivity of hydrogenated amorphous carbon films was measured as a function of the applied electrical field. The measured dependence shows a sharp ambipolar peak near zero gate voltage. Furthermore, we found that in some samples sheet resistance at the peak is as low as 7.5 kΩ/sq. This value is the same order of magnitude as the sheet resistance of a defect free graphene monolayer. Therefore a conclusion is made that an intrinsic graphene with dimensions of at least millimeters exist on the surface of amorphous carbon films. These results can open new perspectives not only for graphe…
In this study, we systematically investigated the structural, mechanical, electronic and optical properties of Sn2Bi monolayer, a sheet experimentally synthesized recently [PRL, 121, 126801 (2018)] which has been hydrogenated (Sn2BiH2) to stabilize free-standing form using density functional theory (DFT). For tuning the band structure and electronic properties, the mechanical strain and electric field are used. Our investigations show that in this free-standing sample, there are electron flat bands and free hole bands like the recently synthesized sample on silicon wafer, which provide the pos…
With considering the great success of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studies of graphene in the past few years, it is quite surprising to notice that there is still a fundamental contradiction about the reported tunnelling spectra of quasi-free-standing graphene monolayer. Many groups observed V-shape spectra with linearly vanishing density-of-state (DOS) at the Dirac point, whereas, the others reported spectra with a gap of 60 meV pinned to the Fermi level in the quasi-free-standing graphene monolayer. Here we systematically studied the two contradicted tunnelling spectra of the quasi-f…
Free-standing monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) is a pure carbon structure composed of randomly distributed atom rings with different sizes, which was recently synthesized. In this work, we carried out ab initio and tight-binding calculations to investigate the optoelectronic properties of MAC and its derived nanotube and nanoscroll configurations. Our results show MAC, tube, and scrolls exhibit similar electronic behavior. All structures absorb from infrared to ultraviolet, with maximum absorption peaks the visible-ultra violet ($\sim 3.2$ eV). The maximum and minimum reflectivity values are i…
Si dangling bonds without H termination at the interface of quasi-free standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG) are known scattering centers that can severely affect carrier mobility. In this report, we study the atomic and electronic structure of Si dangling bonds in QFMLG using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two types of defects with different contrast were observed on a flat terrace by STM and AFM. Their STM contrast varies with bias voltage. In STS, they showed characteristic …
Inspired by recent experimental realizations of monolayer Fe membranes in graphene perforations, we perform ab initio calculations of Fe monolayers and membranes embedded in graphene in order to assess their structural stability and magnetization. We demonstrate that monolayer Fe has a larger spin magnetization per atom than bulk Fe and that Fe membranes embedded in graphene exhibit spin magnetization comparable to monolayer Fe. We find that free-standing monolayer Fe is structurally more stable in a triangular lattice compared to both square and honeycomb lattices. This is contradictory to th…

In this work we report results of step-by-step modeling of the oxidation of free-standing boron monolayers of different types. Results of the calculations demonstrate that the process of the oxidation is always exothermic and lead toward the formation of foam-like boron oxide films with incorporated non-oxidized small boron clusters. Some of these boron-oxide films demonstrate the presence of chemically stable magnetic centers. Evaluation of the physical properties of oxidized boprophene sheets (OBS) demonstrate it possible application in solar energy, as sensors and coating against leakage of…
The resonant Raman scattering in N-IR - UV range from amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) reveal inclusions of trans-polyacetylene (trans-(CH)x) chains with approximate length of up to 120 C=C units and inclusions of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) polymer chains. The PPV is evidenced by a strong dispersive mode at ca. 1175 cm-1. It was found that the Raman response from core Ag trans-(CH)x modes incorporated into a-C:H to changing excitation energy is identical to of free-standing chains thus facilitating identification of trans-(CH)x in complex carbonaceous materials spectra.
Quantifying the correlation between the complex structures of amorphous materials and their physical properties has been a long-standing problem in materials science. In amorphous Si, a representative covalent amorphous solid, the presence of a medium-range order (MRO) has been intensively discussed. However, the specific atomic arrangement corresponding to the MRO and its relationship with physical properties, such as thermal conductivity, remain elusive. Here, we solve this problem by combining topological data analysis, machine learning, and molecular dynamics simulations. By using persiste…
The thermal properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, like MoS$_2$, are known to be affected by interactions with their environment, but this has primarily been studied only with SiO$_2$ substrates. Here, we compare the thermal conductivity (TC) and thermal boundary conductance (TBC) of monolayer MoS$_2$ on amorphous (a-) and crystalline (c-) SiO$_2$, AlN, Al$_2$O$_3$, and $\textit{h}$-BN monolayers using molecular dynamics. The room temperature TC of MoS$_2$ is ~38 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ on amorphous substrates and up to ~68 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ on crystalline substrates, with most of the differe…
Free-standing exfoliated monolayer graphene is an ultra-thin flexible membrane, which exhibits out of plane deformation or corrugation. In this paper, a technique is described to measure the band structure of such free-standing graphene by angle-resolved photoemission. Our results show that photoelectron coherence is limited by the crystal corrugation. However, by combining surface morphology measurements of the graphene roughness with angle-resolved photoemission, energy dependent quasiparticle lifetime and bandstructure measurements can be extracted. Our measurements rely on our development …
Realization of a free-standing graphene is always a demanding task. Here we use scanning probe microscopy and spectroscopy to study the crystallographic structure and electronic properties of the uniform free-standing graphene layers obtained by intercalation of oxygen monolayer in the "strongly" bonded graphene/Ru(0001) interface. Spectroscopic data show that such graphene layer is heavily p-doped with the Dirac point located at 552 meV above the Fermi level. Experimental data are understood within DFT and the observed effects are in good agreement with the theoretical data.
Continuum modeling of a free-standing graphene monolayer, viewed as a two dimensional 2-lattice, requires specifications of the components of the shift vector that act as an auxiliary variable. The field equations are then the equations ruling the shift vector, together with momentum and moment of momentum equations. We present an analysis of simple loading histories such as axial, biaxial tension/compression and simple shear for a range of problems of increasing difficulty. We start by laying down the equations of a simplified model which can still capture bending effects. Initially, we ignor…
The synthesis of wafer-scale two-dimensional amorphous carbon monolayers has been recently demonstrated. This material presents useful properties when integrated as coating of metals, semiconductors or magnetic materials, such as enabling efficient atomic layer deposition and hence fostering the development of ultracompact technologies. Here we propose a characterization of how the structural degree of amorphousness of such carbon membranes could be controlled by the crystal growth temperature. We also identify how energy is dissipated in this material by a systematic analysis of emerging vibr…
Al2O3 is a potential dielectric material for metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices. Al2O3 films deposited on semiconductors usually exhibit amorphous due to lattice mismatch. Compared to two-dimensional graphene, MoS2 is a typical semiconductor, therefore, it has more extensive application. The amorphous-Al2O3/MoS2 (a-Al2O3/MoS2) interface has attracted people's attention because of its unique properties. In this paper, the interface behaviors of a-Al2O3/MoS2 under non-strain and biaxial strain are investigated by first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). First …
Quasi free-standing monolayer graphene can be produced by intercalating species like oxygen or hydrogen between epitaxial graphene and the substrate crystal. If the graphene is indeed decoupled from the substrate, one would expect the observation of a similar electronic dispersion and many-body effects, irrespective of the substrate and the material used to achieve the decoupling. Here we investigate the electron-phonon coupling in two different types of quasi free-standing monolayer graphene: decoupled from SiC via hydrogen intercalation and decoupled from Ir via oxygen intercalation. Both sy…
In the present work we investigate various optical properties (such as light absorption and reflectance) of anodic TiO2 nanotubes layers directly transferred as self-standing membranes onto quartz substrates. This allows investigation in a transmission geometry which provides significantly more reliable data than measurements on the metallic Ti substrate. Light transmission and reflectance measurements were carried out for layers of thicknesses varying from 1.8 to 50 micrometer, and the layers were investigated in their amorphous and crystalline form. A series of wavelength-dependent light att…
Free-standing and well-ordered two-dimensional (2D) silica monolayers with tetrahedral (T-silica) and octahedral (O-silica) building blocks are found to be stable by first principles calculations; T-silica is formed by corner-sharing SiO4 tetrahedrons in a rectangular network and O-silica consists of edge-sharing SiO6 octahedrons. Moreover, the insulating O-silica is the strongest silica monolayer, and can therefore act as a supporting substrate for nanostructures in sensing and catalytic applications. Nanoribbons of T-silica are metallic while those of O-silica have band gaps regardless of th…

The intriguing properties, especially Dirac physics in graphene, have inspired the pursuit of two-dimensional materials in honeycomb structure. Here we achieved a monolayer transition metal monochalcogenide AgTe on Ag(111) by tellurization of the substrate. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy, combined with low-energy electron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, demonstrates the planar honeycomb structure of AgTe. The first principle calculations further reveal that, protected by the in-plane mirror reflection symmetry, …
The electronic structure of an atomic-layer-deposited MoS2 monolayer on SiO2 was investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The angle-dependent evolution of the XAS spectra and the photon-energy-dependent evolution of the XPS spectra were analyzed in detail using an ab-initio electronic structure simulation. Although similar to the theoretical spectra of an ideal free-standing MoS2 ML, the experimental spectra exhibit features that are distinct from those of an ideal ML, which can be interpreted as a consequence of S-O van der…
Graphene-based materials have been suggested for applications ranging from nanoelectronics to nanobiotechnology. However, the realization of graphene-based technologies will require large quantities of free-standing two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials with tuneable physical and chemical properties. Bottom-up approaches via molecular self-assembly have great potential to fulfil this demand. Here, we report on the fabrication and characterization of graphene made by electron-radiation induced cross-linking of aromatic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and their subsequent annealing. In this pro…
We report on a comparative structural characterization of two types of high quality epitaxial graphene layers grown by CVD on 4H-SiC(0001). The layers under study are a single layer graphene on top of a buffer layer and a quasi-free-standing graphene obtained by intercalation of hydrogen underneath the buffer layer. We determine the morphology and structure of both layers by different complementary in-situ and ex-situ surface techniques. We found the existence of large islands in both samples but with different size distribution. Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) measurements were perfo…
Amorphous solids yield at a critical value of the strain (in strain controlled experiments); for larger strains the average stress can no longer increase - the system displays an elasto-plastic steady state. A long standing riddle in the materials community is what is the difference between the microscopic states of the material before and after yield. Explanations in the literature are material specific, but the universality of the phenomenon begs a universal answer. We argue here that there is no fundamental difference in the states of matter before and after yield, but the yield is a bona-f…
The impact of an applied electric field on the exchange coupling parameters has been investigated based on first-principles electronic structure calculations by means of the KKR Green function method. The calculations have been performed for a Fe film, free-standing and deposited on two different substrates, having 1 monolayer (ML) thickness to minimize the effect of screening of the electric field typical for metallic systems. By comparing the results for the free-standing Fe ML with those for Fe on the various substrates, we could analyze the origin of the field-induced change of the exchang…
Understanding the vibrational and thermal properties of amorphous solids is one of the most discussed and long-standing issues in condensed matter physics. Recent works have made significant steps towards understanding harmonic vibrational states. In particular, it has been established that quasi-localized vibrational modes emerge in addition to phonon-like vibrational modes. In this work, we study the anharmonic properties of these vibrational modes. We find that vibrational modes exhibit anharmonicities that induce particle rearrangements and cause transitions to different states. These anha…
Samples of Au clusters deposited by laser ablation on an amorphous-carbon substrate are investigated. After a few months storage at room temperature the initially statistically distributed clusters are found to be collected in agglomerates consisting of larger clusters embedded in an Au film typically covering areas of size 25$\times$70 nm$^2$. The Au film is determined to be probably 4 to 8 monolayers but at most 7 nm thick. Evidence is found that a number of clusters consisting of less then 50 atoms are pinned at intrusions of the substrate. These results were derived using high resolution t…
The magnetoconductive properties of ultrathin Pb films deposited on Si(111) are measured and compared with density-functional electronic band-structure calculations on two-dimensional, free-standing, 1 to 8 monolayers thick Pb(111) slabs. A description with free-standing slabs is possible because it turned out that the Hall coefficient is independent of the substrate and of the crystalline order in the film. We show that the oscillations in sign of the Hall coefficient observed as a function of film thickness can be explained directly from the thickness dependent variations of the electronic b…
The case study of a 32-atoms Si nanocrystallite (NC) embedded in a SiO2 matrix, both crystalline and amorphous, or free-standing with different conditions of passivation and strain is analyzed through ab-initio approaches. The Si32/SiO2 heterojunction shows a type I band offset highlighting a separation between the NC plus the interface and the matrix around. The consequence of this separation is the possibility to correctly reproduce the low energy electronic and optical properties of the composed system simply studying the suspended NC plus interface oxygens with the appropriate strain. More…
We propose a table-top method to obtain bilayer quasi-free-standing epitaxial-graphene (QFSEG) on SiC(0001). By applying a microwave annealing in air to a monolayer epitaxial graphene (EG) grown on SiC(0001), the buffer layer is decoupled from the SiC substrate and becomes the second EG layer as confirmed by the low energy electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman scattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The most likely mechanism of the decoupling is given by the oxidation of the SiC surface, w…
