Recent experiment demonstrated the formation of free-standing Au monolayers by exposing Au-Ag alloy to electron beam irradiation. Inspired by this discovery, we used semi-empirical effective medium theory simulations to investigate monolayer formation in 30 different binary metal alloys composed of late d-series metals Ni, Cu, Pd, Ag, Pt, and Au. In qualitative agreement with the experiment, we find that the beam energy required to dealloy Ag atoms from Au-Ag alloy is smaller than the energy required to break the dealloyed Au monolayer. Our simulations suggest that similar method could also be used to form Au monolayers from Au-Cu alloy and Pt monolayers from Pt-Cu, Pt-Ni, and Pt-Pd alloys.
As a continuation of work on metal and alloy "plants" synthesis on porous membranes by means of pulsed current electroplating volume metallic microstructures resembling such natural objects as shells, cabbage leaves, mushrooms are grown and presented in their modest elegance. Such structures are formed from PdNi and PdCo alloys as well as Ag, Cu and Ni in conditions defined by the shape of membrane pores and the parameters of the pulsed current. It is shown that the obtained complex structures are formed by layers of metallic nanowires as a result of their self-assembly while growing during th…
Atomistic simulations are used to study segregation-induced intergranular film formation in Cu-Zr and Cu-Nb alloys. While Cu-Zr forms structurally disordered or amorphous films, ordered films comprised of a second phase usually precipitate in Cu-Nb, with a critical nucleation size of ~1 nm below which the ordered phase cannot form. While the ordered film is retained at high temperature for a low energy Σ11 (113) boundary, a disordering transition is observed for a high energy Σ5 (310) boundary at low dopant concentrations. Finally, the effect of free surfaces on dopant segregation and intergra…
Solid solubility (SS) is one of the most important features of alloys, which is usually difficult to be largely tuned in the entire alloy concentrations by external approaches. Some alloys that were supposed to have promising physical properties could turn out to be much less useful because of their poor SS, e.g., the case for monolayer BNC [(BN)1-x(C2)x] alloys. Until now, an effective approach on significantly enhancing SS of (BN)1-x(C2)x in the entire x is still lacking. In this article, a novel mechanism of selective orbital coupling between high energy wrong-bond states and surface states…
It has been known that even though two elemental metals, $X$ and $Y$, are immiscible, they can form alloys on surfaces of other metal $Z$. In order to understand such surface alloying of immiscible metals, we study the energetic stability of binary alloys, $XZ$ and $YZ$, in several structures with various coordination numbers (CNs). By analyzing the formation energy modified to enhance the subtle energy difference between metastable structures, we find that $XZ$ and $YZ$ with B2-type structure (CN$=$8) become energetically stable when the $X$ and $Y$ metals form an alloy on the $Z$ metal surfa…
This work deals with the analysis of peculiarities of formation of the hyperfine fields (HFF) at the Fe nuclei in disordered alloys metal- metalloid using the "first-principles" calculations. Some phenomenological models and justification of their usage for the interpretation of the experimental HFF distributions are discussed.
Complexions are phase-like interfacial features that can influence a wide variety of properties, but the ability to predict which material systems can sustain these features remains limited. Amorphous complexions are of particular interest due to their ability to enhance diffusion and damage tolerance mechanisms, as a result of the excess free volume present in these structures. In this paper, we propose a set of materials selection rules aimed at predicting the formation of amorphous complexions, with an emphasis on (1) encouraging the segregation of dopants to the interfaces and (2) lowering…
A semi-empirical formalism based on the second moment tight binding approach, considering two bands is presented for deriving interatomic potentials for magnetic d-band materials and transition metal alloys. It incorporates an empirical local exchange interaction, which accounts for magnetic effects without increasing the computing time required for force evaluation. The consequences of applying a two-band picture to transition metal alloys and transition metal impurities is examined, which combined with evidence from {\it ab initio calculations} leads to some surprisingly simplifying conclusi…
In this letter, we investigate the magnetic properties, electronic structures, Slater-Pauling behaviours of some quanternary Heusler alloys with 4d and 3d transition metal elements. The energy levels of the minority-spin electronic band structures for all our calculated alloys are discussed. We have summaried 21 quanternary Heusler alloys. Our calculations indicate that the half metals ZrCoCrSi, ZrCoCrIn, ZrCoFeSi, ZrFeVAl, ZrFeVGa and NbFeCrAl have large spin-flip gaps.
Surface adsorption, which is often coupled with surface dissolution, is generally unpredictable on alloys due to the complicated alloying and dissolution effects. Herein, we introduce the electronic gradient and cohesive properties of surface sites to characterize the effects of alloying and dissolution. This enables us to build a predictive model for the quantitative determination of the adsorption energy in dissolution, which holds well for transition metals, near-surface alloys, binary alloys, and high-entropy alloys. Furthermore, this model uncovers a synergistic mechanism between the d-ba…
The flexibility of common generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation energy is investigated by monitoring the equilibrium volume of transition metals. It is shown that no universal gradient-level approximation yielding consistent errors for all metals exists. Based on an element-specific optimization, the concept of quasi-non-local gradient-level approximation is introduced. The strength of the scheme is demonstrated on several transition metal alloys.
We show that magnetization damping in Permalloy, Ni80Fe20 (``Py''), can be enhanced sufficiently to reduce post-switching magnetization precession to an acceptable level by alloying with the transition metal osmium (Os). The damping increases monotonically upon raising the Os-concentration in Py, at least up to 9% of Os. Other effects of alloying with Os are suppression of magnetization and enhancement of in-plane anisotropy. Magnetization damping also increases significantly upon alloying with the five other transition metals included in this study (4d-elements: Nb, Ru, Rh; 5d-elements: Ta, P…
The local magnetic moments and hyperfine magnetic fields (HFF) in the ordered alloys Fe_{15}Sn and Fe_{15}Si are calculated with the first-principles full-potential linear augmented plane wave (FP LAPW) method. The results are compared with the experimental data on Fe-M (M=Si, Sn) disordered alloys at small metalloid concentration. The relaxation of the lattice around the impurity and its influence on the quantities under consideration are studied. The mechanism of the local magnetic moment formation is described. It is proved that the main distinction between these alloys is connected with th…
We search for new fully compensated half metals, in which only one electronic spin channel is conducting and there exists no net magnetic moment. We focus on half Heusler alloys and we examine the physical consequence of different crystal structures found in the literature for these compounds, XMnZ, with a transition metal element, such as Cr, Mn, and Fe for X and a nonmetallic element, such as P, Sb and Si for Z. The structures differ in the placement of voids in the L2$_1$ structure of the full Heulser alloy. One structure has the void at (1/4, 3/4, 1/4)a and the other places the void at (0.…
Bulk metallic glass forms when liquid metal alloys solidify without crystalization. In the search for Iron-based bulk glass-forming alloys of the metal-metalloid type (Fe-B- and Fe-C-based), crystals based on the structural prototype C6Cr23 often preempt the amorphous phase. Destabilizing this competing crystal structure could enhance glass-formability. We carry out first-principles total energy calculations of enthalpy of formation to identify third elements that can effectively destabilize C6Cr23. Yttrium appears optimal among transition metals, and rare earths also are suitable. Atomic size…
The structure and static magnetic properties - saturation magnetization, perpendicular anisotropy, spectroscopic g-factor, and orbital magnetization - of thin-film 3d transition metal alloys are determined over the full range of alloy compositions via X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. We determine the interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by use of samples sets with varying thickness for specific alloy concentrations. The results agree with prior published data and theoretical predictions. They provide a comprehensive compilation of the magnetic…
We present the results of large scale molecular dynamics simulations aimed at understanding the origins of high friction coefficients in pure metals, and their concomitant reduction in alloys and composites. We utilize a series of targeted simulations to demonstrate that different slip mechanisms are active in the two systems, leading to differing frictional behavior. Specifically, we show that in pure metals, sliding occurs along the crystallographic slip planes, whereas in alloys shear is accommodated by grain boundaries. In pure metals, there is significant grain growth induced by the appli…
We present here an optimized and parallelized version of the {\sl augmented space recursion code} for the calculation of the electronic and magnetic properties of bulk disordered alloys, surfaces and interfaces, either flat, corrugated or rough, and random networks. Applications have been made to bulk disordered alloys to benchmark our code.
We present an ab initio theory of transport quantities of metallic ferromagnets developed in the framework of the fully relativistic tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method. The approach is based on the Kubo-Streda formula for the conductivity tensor, on the coherent potential approximation for random alloys, and on the concept of interatomic electron transport. The developed formalism is applied to pure 3d transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni) and to random Ni-based ferromagnetic alloys (Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, Ni-Mn). High values of the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), found for Ni-rich alloys, ar…
Crystal structures of simple metals and binary alloy phases based on the close-packed hexagonal structure are analyzed within the model of Fermi sphere-Brillouin zone interactions to understand distortions and superlattices. Examination of the Brillouin-Jones configuration in relation to the nearly-free electron Fermi sphere for several representative phases reveals significance of the electron energy contribution to the phase stability. This approach may be useful for understanding high pressure structures recently found in compressed simple alkali and alkali-earth metals.
We present a study of the elongation and rupture of gold-silver alloy nanowires. Atomistic details of the evolution were derived from time-resolved atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. The results show the occurrence of gold enrichment at the nanojunction region, leading to a gold-like structural behavior even for alloys with minor gold content. Our observations have also revealed the formation of mixed (Au and Ag) linear atomic chains.
Lattice parameter, bulk modulus, formation energy and magnetism equilibrium structure in all-d transition metals $Ni_2XMn$ (X=Co,Cr,Fe) for Full and Inverse Heusler structure are studied by first-principles calculations. Tetragonal distortion is calculated for the equilibrium volume of each alloy and possible new equilibrium structures are reported. Density of electronic states are analyzed and the results lead to half-metallicity for this type of alloys.
Quantifying the population of nanoscale defects that are formed in metals and alloys exposed to extreme radiation environments remains a pressing challenge in materials science. These defects both fundamentally alter material properties and seed long-timescale performance degradation, which often limits the lifespan of engineering systems. Unlike ceramic and semiconducting materials, these defects in metals and alloys are not spectroscopically active, forcing characterization to rely on indirect measurements from which the distribution of nanoscale defects may be inferred. In this mini-review,…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials and Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMD) in particular are at the forefront of nanotechnology. To tailor properties for engineering applications, alloying strategies used for bulk metals in the last century need to be extended to this novel class of materials. Here we present a systematic analysis of the phase behaviour of substitutional 2D alloys in the TMD family on both the metal and chalcogenide site. The phase behaviour is quantified in terms of a metastability metric and benchmarked against systematic computational screening of configurational energy land…
Oxidation and tarnishing are the two most common initial steps in the corrosive process of metals at ambient conditions. These are always initiated with O and S binding to a metallic surface, so that one can use the binding energy as a rough proxy for the metal reactivity. With this in mind, we present a systematic study of the binding energy of O and S across the entire transition-metals composition space, namely we explore the binding energy of {\bf 88} single-phase transition metals and of {\bf 646} transition-metal binary alloys. The analysis is performed by defining a suitable descriptor …
Semi-Empirical Tight Binding (TB) is known to be a scalable and accurate atomistic representation for electron transport for realistically extended nano-scaled semiconductor devices that might contain millions of atoms. In this paper an environment-aware and transferable TB model suitable for electronic structure and transport simulations in technologically relevant metals, metallic alloys, metal nanostructures and metallic interface systems is described. Part I of this paper describes the development and validation of the new TB model. The new model incorporates intra-atomic diagonal and off-…
Measurements of the surface x-ray scattering from several pure liquid metals (Hg, Ga, and In) and from three alloys (Ga-Bi, Bi-In, and K-Na) with different heteroatomic chemical interactions in the bulk phase are reviewed. Surface-induced layering is found for each elemental liquid metal. The surface structure of the K-Na alloy resembles that of an elemental liquid metal. Bi-In displays pair formation at the surface. Surface segregation and a wetting film are found for Ga-Bi.
Alloys present the great potential in catalysis because of their adjustable compositions, structures and element distributions, which unfortunately also limit the fast screening of the potential alloy catalysts. Machine learning methods are able to tackle the multi-variable issues but still cannot yet predict the complex alloy catalysts from the properties of pure metals due to the lack of universal descriptors. Herein we propose a transferable machine-learning model based on the intrinsic properties of substrates and adsorbates, which can predict the adsorption energies of single-atom alloys …
High $ZT$ value and large Seebeck coefficient have been reported in the nanostructured Fe-doped Si-Ge alloys. In this work, the large Seebeck coefficient in Fe-doped Si-Ge systems is qualitatively reproduced from the computed electronic density of states, where a hybrid functional, HSE06, is used for an exchange-correlation functional, as well as a special quasi-random structure (SQS) for a disordered atomic configuration. Furthermore, by replacing Fe with other transition metals, such as Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Au, a better dopant that produces a larger Seebeck coefficient in Si-Ge alloy syst…
Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are amorphous alloys with desirable mechanical properties and processing capabilities. To date, the design of new BMGs has largely employed empirical rules and trial-and-error experimental approaches. Ab initio computational methods are currently prohibitively slow to be practically used in searching the vast space of possible atomic combinations for bulk glass formers. Here, we perform molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained, anisotropic potential, which mimics interatomic covalent bonding, to measure the critical cooling rates for metal-metalloid alloy…
A multiple scattering formulation for the electromigration wind force on atoms in dilute alloys is developed. The theory describes electromigration via a vacancy mechanism. The method is used to calculate the wind valence for electromigration in various host metals having a close-packed lattice structure, namely aluminum, the noble metals copper, silver and gold and the $4d$ transition metals. The self-electromigration results for aluminum and the noble metals compare well with experimental data. For the $4d$ metals small wind valences are found, which make these metals attractive candidates f…
Motivated by interest in the elastic properties of high strength amorphous metals, we examine the elastic properties of select crystalline phases. Using first principles methods, we calculate elastic moduli in various chemical systems containing transition metals, specifically early (Ta,W) and late (Co,Ni). Theoretically predicted alloy elastic properties are verified for Ni-Ta by comparison with experimental measurements using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy. Comparison of our computed elastic moduli with effective medium theories shows that alloying leads to enhancement of bulk moduli relat…
In order to shed light on the second harmonic generation (SHG) of new 2-D systems, first principles methods are used to calculate the second order susceptibility χ(2) for different types of layered alloys such as monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) alloys, TMD Haeckelite alloys, nanotubes of TMD alloys, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) systems which include BxNyCz alloys, BN and BNC2 nanotubes, BxNxCy Haeckelites and BN Schwarzites (porous BN). It is found that the tungsten based alloys possess higher χ(2) than Mo based at high photon energies, but at low energies, one type of Mo…
Surface alloys are a highly tunable class of low dimensional materials with the opportunity to tune and control the spin and charge carrier functionalities on the nanoscale. Here, we focus on the atomic and mesoscopic structural details of three distinctive binary rare-earth-noble metals (RE/NM) surface alloys by employing scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Using Dysprosium as the guest element on fcc(111) noble metal substrates, we identify the formation of non-commensurate surface alloy superstructures which exhibit homogeneous moiré patterns for …
The electric and thermo-magneto-electric transport of the prototypical ferromagnetic transition-metal alloy system fcc-Co$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ has been investigated on the basis of Kubo's linear response formalism. The results for the full electric conductivity tensor allow to discuss the spin-orbit induced anisotropic magneto-resistance (AMR) and the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). These are complemented by results for the corresponding thermo-magneto-electric transport properties anisotropy of the Seebeck effect (ASE) and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). The relation between the respective response coef…
We apply the pseudopotential density functional perturbation theory approach along with the quasiharmonic approximation to calculate the thermal expansion of tungsten and two important metallic alloys, NiAl and PdTi. We derive the theory for anisotropic crystal structures and test the approximation that the anisotropic effects of thermal expansion are equivalent to negative pressure - this simplifies the calculation enormously for complex structures. Throughout, we find excellent agreement with experimental results.
Pure metals (Cu, Ti, Zr, V, Pd) and diluted Pd-alloys (Pd-Ag, Pd-Pt, Pd-Ru, Pd-Rh) were implanted by 25 keV deuterium ions at fluences in the range (1.2÷2.3)x1022 D+/m2. The post-treatment depth distributions of deuterium ions were measured 10 days and three months after the implantation using Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA) and Rutherford Backscattering (RBS). Comparison of the obtained results allowed to make conclusions about relative stability of deuterium and hydrogen gases in pure metals and diluted Pd alloys. Very high diffusion rates of implanted deuterium ions from V and Pd p…
We propose a ferromagnetic Heusler alloy that can switch between a metal and a half-metal. Thiseffect can provide tunable spintronics properties. Using the density functional theory (DFT) withreliable implementations of the electron correlation effects, we find Mn2ScSi total energy curvesconsisting of distinct branches with a very small energy difference. The phase at low lattice crystalvolume is a low magnetic half-metallic state while the phase at high lattice crystal volume is a highmagnetic metallic state. We suggest that the transition between half-metallic and metallic statescan be trigg…
A critical limitation to the wide-scale use of classical molecular dynamics for alloy design is the limited availability of suitable interatomic potentials. Here, we introduce the Rapid Alloy Method for Producing Accurate General Empirical Potentials or RAMPAGE, a computationally economical procedure to generate binary embedded-atom model potentials from already-existing single-element potentials that can be further combined into multi-component alloy potentials. We present the quality of RAMPAGE calibrated Finnis-Sinclair type EAM potentials using binary Ag-Al and ternary Ag-Au-Cu as case stu…
The all-d-metal Mn2-based Heusler ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Mn50Ni40-xCoxTi10 (x = 8 and 9.5) are realized. With a generic comparison between d-metal Ti and main-group elements in lowering the transformation temperature, the magnetostructural martensitic transformations are established by further introducing Co to produce local ferromagnetic Mn-Co-Mn configurations. A 5-fold modulation and (3, -2) stacking of [00 10] of martensite are determined by XRD and HRTEM analysis. Based on the transformation, a large magneto-strain of 6900 ppm and a large volume change of -2.54% are observed in…
Chemically stable quantum-confined 2D metals are of interest in next-generation nanoscale quantum devices. Bottom-up design and synthesis of such metals could enable the creation of materials with tailored, on-demand, electronic and optical properties for applications that utilize tunable plasmonic coupling, optical non-linearity, epsilon-near-zero behavior, or wavelength-specific light trapping. In this work, we demonstrate that the electronic, superconducting and optical properties of air-stable two-dimensional metals can be controllably tuned by the formation of alloys. Environmentally robu…
We present a new phase field crystal model for structural transformations in multi-component alloys. The formalism builds upon the two-point correlation kernel developed in Greenwood et al. for describing structural transformations in pure materials [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 045702 (2010)]. We introduce an effective twopoint correlation function for multi-component alloys that uses the local species concentrations to interpolate between different crystal structures. A simplified version of the model is derived for the particular case of threecomponent (ternary) alloys, and its equilibrium propert…
Body-centred cubic (BCC) transition metals tend to be brittle at low temperatures, posing significant challenges in processing and major concerns for damage tolerance. The brittleness is largely dictated by the screw dislocation core; the nature and control of which remain a puzzle after nearly a century. Here, we introduce a physics-based material index \{chi}, the energy difference between BCC and face-centred-cubic structures, that guides manipulation of core properties. The lattice friction and nucleation barrier have near-linear scaling with \{chi} and the core transforms from non-degener…
The search for new hard materials is often challenging from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Furthermore, using materials for biomedical applications calls for alloys with high biocompatibility which are even more sparse. The Ti$_{1-x}$Au$_x$ ($0.22 \leq x \leq 0.8$) exhibit extreme hardness and strength values, elevated melting temperatures (compared to those of constituent elements), reduced density compared to Au, high malleability, bulk metallicity, high biocompatibility, low wear, reduced friction, potentially high radio opacity, as well as osseointegration. All these pro…
The 4d-transition-metals carbides (ZrC, NbC) and nitrides (ZrN, NbN) in the rocksalt structure, as well as their ternary alloys, have been recently studied by means of a first-principles full potential linearized augmented plane waves method within the local density approximation. These materials are important because of their interesting mechanical and physical properties, which make them suitable for many technological applications. Here, by using a simple theoretical model, we estimate the bulk moduli of their ternary alloys Zr$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$C and Zr$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$N in terms of the bulk modul…
The unique optical and electronic properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) make them promising materials for applications in (opto-)electronics, catalysis and more. Specifically, alloys of 2D TMDs have broad potential applications owing to their composition-controlled properties. Several important challenges remain regarding controllable and scalable fabrication of these alloys, such as achieving control over their atomic ordering (i.e. clustering or random mixing of the transition metal atoms within the 2D layers). In this work, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is…
We report on the various types of Peierls like two dimensional structural modulations and relative phase stability of 2H and 1T poly-types in MoS2-ReS2 and WS2-ReS2 alloy system. Theoretical calculation predicts a polytype phase transition cross over at ~50 at.% of Mo and W in ReS2 in both monolayer and bulk form, respectively. Experimentally, two different types of structural modulations at 50% and a modulation corresponding to trimerization at 75% alloy composition is observed for MoS2-ReS2 and only one type of modulation is observed at 50% WS2-ReS2 alloy system. The 50% alloy system is foun…
Ultrafast magnetization dynamics induced by femtosecond laser pulses have been measured in ferrimagnetic Co0.8Gd0.2, Co.74Tb.26 and Co.86Tb.14 alloys. Using element sensitivity of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co L3, Tb M5 and Gd M5 edges we evidence that the demagnetization dynamics is element dependent. We show that a thermalization time as fast as 280 fs is observed for the rare-earth in the alloy, when the laser excited state temperature is below the compensation temperature. It is limited to 500 fs when the laser excited state temperature is below the Curie temperature (Tc). We…
We analyze Curie temperatures of rare-earth transition metal binary alloys with machine learning method. In order to select important descriptors and descriptor groups, we introduce newly developed subgroup relevance analysis and adopt the hierarchical clustering in the representation. We execute the exhaustive search and successfully illustrate the importance of descriptors and descriptor groups. We execute the exhaustive search and illustrate that our approach indeed leads to the successful selection of important descriptors and descriptor groups. It helps us to choose the combination of the…
The Semi-Empirical TB model developed in part I is applied to metal transport problems of current relevance in part II. A systematic study of the effect of quantum confinement, transport orientation and homogeneous strain on electronic transport properties of Cu is carried out. It is found that quantum confinement from bulk to nanowire boundary conditions leads to significant anisotropy in conductance of Cu along different transport orientations. Compressive homogeneous strain is found to reduce resistivity by increasing the density of conducting modes in Cu. The [110] transport orientation in…
Common substitutional isovalent semiconductor alloys usually form disordered metastable phases with positive excess formation enthalpies (ΔH). In contrast, monolayer alloys of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) always have negative ΔH, suggesting atomic ordering, which is, however, not yet experimentally observed. Using first-principles calculations, we find that the negative ΔH of cation-mixed TMD alloys results from the charge transfer from weak Mo-X to nearest strong W-X bonds and the negative ΔH of anion-mixed TMD alloys comes from the larger energy gain due…
Molecular dynamics simulations of crack propagation are performed for two extreme cases of complex metallic alloys (CMAs): In a model quasicrystal the structure is determined by clusters of atoms, whereas the model C15 Laves phase is a simple periodic stacking of a unit cell. The simulations reveal that the basic building units of the structures also govern their fracture behaviour. Atoms in the Laves phase play a comparable role to the clusters in the quasicrystal. Although the latter are not rigid units, they have to be regarded as significant physical entities.

We focus on the central problem of discriminating between metallic and insulating behaviour in amorphous alloys formed between a semiconductor and a metal. For this, the logarithmic temperature derivative of the conductivity, w = d ln sigma / d ln T, has proved over recent years to be very helpful in determining the critical value x_c of the metal content x for the metal-insulator transition (MIT). We show that, for various amorphous alloys, recent experimental results on w(T,x) are qualitatively inconsistent with the usual assumptions of continuity of the MIT at T = 0 and of sigma(T,x_c) bein…
