The synthesis of wafer-scale two-dimensional amorphous carbon monolayers has been recently demonstrated. This material presents useful properties when integrated as coating of metals, semiconductors or magnetic materials, such as enabling efficient atomic layer deposition and hence fostering the development of ultracompact technologies. Here we propose a characterization of how the structural degree of amorphousness of such carbon membranes could be controlled by the crystal growth temperature. We also identify how energy is dissipated in this material by a systematic analysis of emerging vibrational modes whose localization increases with the loss of spatial symmetries, resulting in a tunable thermal conductivity varying by more than two orders of magnitude. Our simulations provide some recipe to design most suitable "amorphous graphene" based on the target applications such as ultrathin heat spreaders, energy harvesters or insulating thermal barriers.
Recently, the prospects for amorphous phases of graphene (a-G) have been explored computationally. Initial models were flat, and contained odd-member rings, while maintaining three-fold coordination and sp2 bonding. Upon relaxation, puckering occurs, and may be traced to the existence of pentagons, in analogy with the situation for fullerenes. In this work, we systematically explore the inherent structures with energy close to the flat starting structure. As expected, the planar symmetry can be broken in various ways, which we characterize for 800-atom model of a-G, always using local basis de…
Fabrication of graphene field effect transistor is described which uses an intrinsic graphene on the surface of as deposited hydrogenated amorphous carbon films. Ambipolar characteristic has been demonstrated typical for graphene devices, which changes to unipolar characteristic if the surface graphene was etched in oxygen plasma. Because amorphous carbon films can be growth easily, with unlimited dimensions and no transfer of graphene is necessary, this can open new perspective for graphene electronics.
Surface resistivity of hydrogenated amorphous carbon films was measured as a function of the applied electrical field. The measured dependence shows a sharp ambipolar peak near zero gate voltage. Furthermore, we found that in some samples sheet resistance at the peak is as low as 7.5 kΩ/sq. This value is the same order of magnitude as the sheet resistance of a defect free graphene monolayer. Therefore a conclusion is made that an intrinsic graphene with dimensions of at least millimeters exist on the surface of amorphous carbon films. These results can open new perspectives not only for graphe…
We predict a transition to metallicity when a sufficient amount of disorder is induced in graphene. Calculations were performed by means of a first principles stochastic quench method. The resulting amorphous graphene can be seen as nanopatches of graphene that are connected by a network of disordered small and large carbon rings. The buckling is minimal and we believe that it is a result of averaging of counteracting random in-plane stress forces. The linear response conductance is obtained by a model theory as function of lattice distortions. Such metallic behaviour is a much desired propert…
We shed light on the catalyst-free growth of graphene from amorphous carbon (a-C) by current-induced annealing by witnessing the mechanism both with in-situ transmission electron microscopy and with molecular dynamics simulations. Both in experiment and in simulation, we observe that small a-C clusters on top of a graphene substrate rearrange and crystallize into graphene patches. The process is aided by the high temperatures involved and by the van der Waals interactions with the substrate. Furthermore, in the presence of a-C, graphene can grow from the borders of holes and form a seamless gr…
Multifunctional graphene-based and amorphous magnetic materials: synthesis, characterization, and applications in electromagnetic shielding and advanced gas sensing
The paper presents a joint consideration of Raman spectra of sp2 amorphous carbons alongside with the nature and type of their amorphicity. The latter was attributed to the enforced fragmentation. The fragments, presented with size-restricted graphene domains with heteroatom necklaces in the circumference, are the basic structural units (BSUs) of the solids, determining them as amorphics with molecular structure. The standard G-D-2D pattern of Raman spectra of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, sp2 amorphous carbons, graphene and/or graphite crystal is attributed to BSUs graphene domains. The m…
Amorphous carbon films have been routinely used to enhance the preparation of frozen-hydrated transmission electron microscopy (TEM) samples, either in retaining protein concentration, providing mechanical stability or dissipating sample charge. However, strong background signal from the amorphous carbon support obstructs that of the sample, and the insulating properties of amorphous carbon films preclude any efficiency in dispersing charge. Graphene addresses the limitations of amorphous carbon. Graphene is a crystalline material with virtually no phase or amplitude contrast and unparalleled,…
While crystalline two-dimensional materials have become an experimental reality during the past few years, an amorphous 2-D material has not been reported before. Here, using electron irradiation we create an sp2-hybridized one-atom-thick flat carbon membrane with a random arrangement of polygons, including four-membered carbon rings. We show how the transformation occurs step-by-step by nucleation and growth of low-energy multi-vacancy structures constructed of rotated hexagons and other polygons. Our observations, along with first-principles calculations, provide new insights to the bonding …
Apart from its unique and exciting electronic properties, many sensor based applications of graphene are purely based on its mechanical and structural properties. Here we report a numerical and analytical study of a void in amorphous (small domain polycrystalline) graphene, and show that the energetics of a void is a balance between the line tension cost versus the increased area gain. Using the concepts of classical nucleation theory, we show that the critical radius of a void formed in amorphous graphene at constant pressure is simply the ratio of line tension at the void and the applied pre…
The structure of amorphous materials has been debated since the 1930's as a binary question: amorphous materials are either Zachariasen continuous random networks (Z-CRNs) or Z-CRNs containing crystallites. It was recently demonstrated, however, that amorphous diamond can be synthesized in either form. Here we address the question of the structure of single-atom-thick amorphous monolayers. We reanalyze the results of prior simulations for amorphous graphene and report kinetic Monte Carlo simulations based on alternative algorithms. We find that crystallite-containing Z-CRN is the favored struc…
We carried out a joint analysis of the INS, DRIFT, and XPS spectra of a set of sp2 amorphous carbons of the highest carbonization rank representing natural substances (shungite carbon, anthraxolite, and anthracite), technical graphenes (laboratory reduced graphene oxides), and industrial products (carbon blacks). It was determined, that the DRIFT spectra of the studied substances consist of two components determined by hydrogen and oxygen compositions in the circumference of graphene molecules, which represent the basic structural units of amorphic compounds. Methine groups typify the hydrogen…
All-carbon heterostructures have been produced recently via focused ion beam patterning of single layer graphene. Amorphized graphene is similar to a graphene sheet in which some hexagons are replaced by a combination of pentagonal, heptagonal and octagonal rings. The present investigation provides a general view regarding phonon and load transfer along amorphous graphene. The developed models for the evaluation of mechanical and thermal conductivity properties yield accurate results for pristine graphene and acquired findings for amorphized graphene films are size independent. Our atomistic r…
The article discusses carbocatalysis provided with amorphous carbons. The discussion is conducted from the standpoint of the spin chemistry of graphene molecules, in the framework of which the amorphous carbocatalysts are a conglomerate of graphene-oxynitrothiohydride stable radicals presenting the basic structural units (BSUs) of the species. The chemical activity of the BSUs atoms is reliably determined computationally, which allows mapping the distribution of active sites in these molecular catalysts. The presented maps reliably evidence the BSUs radicalization provided with carbon atoms on…
Two-mode valence electron configuration of carbon atoms lays the foundation of the unique two-mode amorphous state of the monoatomic carbon solid. From the fundamentals of solid-state physics, sp$^3$ and sp$^2$ amorphous carbons are two different amorphous species characterized by conceptually different short-range orders, namely, groups of tetrahedrally bonded sp3 configured atoms and size-restricted sp$^2$ graphene domains framed with heteroatom necklaces. Molecular character of sp$^2$ amorphics is coherent with the reaction mechanism of the solid amorphicity in due course of the forced frag…
Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used to characterize an amorphous layer observed at the interface in graphite and graphene films grown via thermal decomposition of C-face 4H-SiC. The amorphous layer does not to cover the entire interface, but uniform contiguous regions span microns of cross-sectional interface. Annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) images and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) demonstrate that the amorphous layer is a carbon-rich composition of Si/C. The amorphous layer is clearly observed in samples grown at 16…
Two-dimensional (2D) materials like graphene and h-BN usually show high thermal conductivity, which enables rich applications in thermal dissipation and nanodevices. Disorder, on the other hand, is often present in 2D materials. Structural disorder induces localization of electrons and phonons and alters the electronic, mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties. Here we calculate the in-plane thermal conductivity of both monolayer carbon and monolayer boron nitride in the amorphous form, by reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the thermal conductivity of both …
Monolayer graphene has been grown on crystallized Cu (111) films on standard oxidized Si 100 mm wafers. The monolayer graphene demonstrates high uniformity (>97% coverage), with immeasurable defects (>95% defect-negligible) across the entire wafer. Key to these results is the phase transition of evaporated copper films from amorphous to crystalline at the growth temperature as corroborated by X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. Noticeably, phase transition of copper film is observed on technologically ubiquitous oxidized Si wafer where the oxide is a standard amorphous ther…
Plasma surface modification was used to fabricate graphene on the top of insulating diamond-like carbon films. It is shown that by a combination of pulsed argon plasma treatment and thermal annealing at 350\degreeC is possible to achieve partial crystallization of amorphous carbon to graphene. The observed Raman spectra are typical for defected graphene - splitted D- and G-peaks and a broad 2D-peak. This result is very encouraging and we hope that by improving this technology it will be possible to fabricate defect-free graphene, which can be used in electronics without transfer to other subst…
Recent experimental utilization of liquid substrate in the production of two-dimensional crystals, such as graphene, together with a general interest in amorphous materials, raises the following question: is it beneficial to use a liquid substrate to optimize amorphous material production? Inspired by epitaxial growth, we use a two-dimensional coarse-grained model of interacting particles to show that introducing a motion for the substrate atoms improves the self-assembly process of particles that move on top of the substrate. We find that a specific amount of substrate liquidity (for a given …
Crystalline two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene possess unique physical properties absent in their bulk form, enabling many novel device applications. Yet, little is known about their amorphous counterparts, which can be obtained by introducing the Stone-Wales (SW) topological defects via proton radiation. Here we provide strong numerical evidence that SW defects preserve hyperuniformity in hexagonal 2D materials, a recently discovered new state of matter characterized by vanishing normalized infinite-wavelength density fluctuations, which implies that all amorphous states of these…
The paper presents a cooperative consideration of Raman spectra of $^2$ amorphous carbons as well as the nature and type of their amorphicity. The latter was attributed to the amorphization of a new type named as enforced fragmentation. The fragments are stable graphenous molecules, which are the basic structural units (BSUs) of the solids, determining them as amorphics with molecular structure. Due to weak intermolecular interaction, BSUs, once aggregated, are the main defendants for IR absorption and Raman scattering of the solids, just justifying the consideration of them at molecular level…
Low-energy ion beam modification was proposed to create graphene on the top of the insulated diamond-like carbon films. In such low-temperature fabrication process the surface of the amorphous carbon could crystallize to graphene as a result of point defect creation and enhanced diffusion caused by the ion bombardment. In the experiment 130 eV argon ion irradiation was used. After the modification the resistivity of the sample surface drops. Raman spectra of the samples measured at 633 nm showed partial crystallization and were similar to the spectra of defected graphene. This result is very e…
The microstructure, electronic structure, and chemical bonding of chromium carbide thin films with different carbon contents have been investigated with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and soft x-ray absorption-emission spectroscopies. Most of the films can be described as amorphous nanocomposites with non-crystalline CrCx in an amorphous carbon matrix. At high carbon contents, graphene-like structures are formed in the amorphous carbon matrix. At 47 at% carbon content, randomly oriented nanocrystallites are formed creating a complex microstr…
We show by means of molecular dynamics simulations that graphene is an excellent coating for diamond. The transformation of diamond to amorphous carbon while sliding under pressure can be prevented by having at least two graphene layers between the diamond slabs, making this combination of materials suitable for new coatings and micro- and nanoelectromechanical devices. Grain boundaries, vacancies and adatoms on the diamond surface do not change this picture whereas reactive adsorbates between the graphene layers may have detrimental effects. Our findings can be explained by the properties of …
We have studied the internal friction and the relative change in the speed of sound of amorphous diamond-like carbon films prepared by pulsed-laser deposition from 0.3 K to room temperature. Like the most of amorphous solids, the internal friction below 10 K exhibits a temperature independent plateau. The values of the internal friction plateau, however, are slightly below the universal ``glassy range'' where the internal frictions of almost all amorphous solids lie. Similar observations have been made in our earlier studies in the thin films of amorphous silicon and amorphous germanium, and t…
In this work, the effect of the ion fluence-dependent defect formation on the modification of surface electronic and optical properties of graphene has been investigated. The chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene was irradiated with swift heavy ion (SHI) (70 MeV Si+5) beam at different fluence to study the defect formation mechanism and the role of it in modulating its surface electronic property such as work function. At low ion dose, acceptor doping via vacancy creation was observed; whereas dense electronic excitation dominated extended defects was realized at higher dose, which subsequen…
We report nanocrystalline carbon impurities coexisting with graphene synthesized via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on platinum. We observe micron-size island-like impurity layers, which can easily be mistaken for second graphene layers in optical microscopy or secondary electron microscopy (SEM). The island orientation depends on the crystalline orientation of the Pt, as shown by electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD), indicating growth of amorphous carbon below graphene. Dark-field TEM indicates that in addition to uniform single-crystal graphene, our sample is decorated with nanocrystallin…
We generate representative structural models of amorphous carbon (a-C) from constant-volume quenching from the liquid with subsequent relaxation of internal stresses in molecular dynamics simulations using empirical and machine-learning interatomic potentials. By varying volume and quench rate we generate structures with a range of density and amorphous morphologies. We find that all a-C samples show a universal relationship between hybridization, bulk modulus and density despite having distinct cohesive energies. Differences in cohesive energy are traced back to slight changes in the distribu…
As the synthesis of graphene on copper became one of the primary preparation methods for both fundamental research and industrial application, Raman spectra of graphene/Cu systems need to be quantitatively understood regarding how their interactions affect the electronic structure of graphene. Using multi-wavelength Raman spectroscopy, we investigated three types of graphene bound on Cu: graphene grown on Cu foils and Cu film/SiO2, and Cu-evaporated exfoliated graphene. 2D peak frequencies of the first two samples were ~17 cm-1 higher than expected for 1.96 eV excitation even when the effect o…
Since graphene, a single sheet of graphite, has all of its carbon atoms on the surface, its property is very sensitive to materials contacting the surface. Herein, we report novel Raman peaks ob-served in annealed graphene and elucidate their chemical origins by Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Graphene annealed in oxygen-free atmosphere revealed very broad additional Raman peaks overlapping the D, G and 2D peaks of graphene itself. Based on the topographic confirmation by AFM, the new Raman peaks were attributed to amorphous carbon formed on the surface of graphene by car…
The growth of graphene on copper by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition in a system free of pumping equipment is investigated. The emphasis is put on the necessity of hydrogen presence during graphene synthesis and cooling. In the absence of hydrogen during the growth step or cooling at slow rate, weak carbon coverage, consisting mostly of oxidized and amorphous carbon, is obtained on the copper catalyst. The oxidation originates from the inevitable occurrence of residual oxidizing impurities in the reactor's atmosphere. Graphene with appreciable coverage can be grown within the vac…
New carbon forms exhibiting extraordinary physico-chemical properties can be generated from nanostructured precursors under extreme pressure. Nevertheless, synthesis of such fascinating materials is often not well understood that results, as is the case of C60 precursor, in irreproducibility of the results and impeding further progress in the materials design. Here the semiconducting amorphous carbon having bandgaps of 0.1-0.3 eV and the advantages of isotropic superhardness and superior toughness over single-crystal diamond and inorganic glasses are produced from transformation of fullerene a…
We investigate the amorphous structure, chemical bonding, and electrical properties of magnetron sputtered Fe1-xCx (0.21<x<0.72) thin films. X-ray, electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy show that the Fe1-xCx films are amorphous nanocomposites, consisting of a two-phase domain structure with Fe-rich carbidic FeCy, and a carbon-rich matrix. Pair distribution function analysis indicates a close-range order similar to those of crystalline Fe3C carbides in all films with additional graphene-like structures at high carbon content (71.8 at% C). From X-ray photoelectron spectroscop…
Sulfur and nitrogen dual doped graphene have been extensively investigated in the field of oxygen reduction reaction, supercapacitors and batteries, but their magnetic and absorption performance have not been explored. Besides, the effects of doping sequence of sulfur and nitrogen atoms on the morphology, structural property and the corresponding microwave absorption performance of the dual doped graphene remain unexplored. In this work, nitrogen and sulfur dual doped graphene with different doping sequence were successfully prepared using a controllable two steps facile thermal treatment meth…
Recent years witnessed a rapid growth of interest of scientific and engineering communities to thermal properties of materials. Carbon allotropes and derivatives occupy a unique place in terms of their ability to conduct heat. The room-temperature thermal conductivity of carbon materials span an extraordinary large range - of over five orders of magnitude - from the lowest in amorphous carbons to the highest in graphene and carbon nanotubes. I review thermal and thermoelectric properties of carbon materials focusing on recent results for graphene, carbon nanotubes and nanostructured carbon mat…
Recently (C.-T. Toh et al., Nature 577, 199 (2020)), the first synthesis of free-standing monolayer amorphous carbon (MAC) was achieved. MAC is a pure carbon structure composed of five, six, seven and eight atom rings randomly distributed. MAC proved to be surprisingly stable and highly fracture resistant. Its electronic properties are similar to boron nitride. In this work, we have investigated the mechanical properties and thermal stability of MAC models using fully-atomistic reactive molecular dynamics simulations. For comparison purposes, the results are contrasted against pristine graphen…
Tunability of the surface plasmon resonance wavelength is demonstrated by varying the thickness of Al2O3 spacer layer inserted between the graphene and nanoparticles. By varying the spacer layer thickness from 0.3 to 1.8 nm, the resonance wavelength is shifted from 583 to 566 nm. The shift is due to a change in the electromagnetic field coupling strength between the localized surface plasmons excited in the gold nanoparticles and a single layer graphene film. In contrast, when the graphene film is absent from the system, no noticeable shift in the resonance wavelength is observed upon varying …
The electronic properties of two-dimensional materials such as graphene are extremely sensitive to their environment, especially the underlying substrate. Planar van der Waals bonded substrates such as hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have been shown to greatly improve the electrical performance of graphene devices by reducing topographic variations and charge fluctuations compared to amorphous insulating substrates}. Semiconducting transition metal dichalchogenides (TMDs) are another family of van der Waals bonded materials that have recently received interest as alternative substrates to hBN fo…
Amorphous materials are coming within reach of realistic computer simulations, but new approaches are needed to fully understand their intricate atomic structures. Here, we show how machine-learning (ML)-based techniques can give new, quantitative chemical insight into the atomic-scale structure of amorphous silicon (a-Si). Based on a similarity function ("kernel"), we define a structural metric that unifies the description of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor environments in the amorphous state. We apply this to an ensemble of a-Si networks, generated in melt-quench simulations with an ML-ba…
Graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition and supported on SiO2 and sapphire substrates was studied following controlled introduction of defects induced by 35 keV carbon ion irradiation. Changes in Raman spectra following fluences ranging from 10^12 cm^-2 to 10^15 cm^-2 indicate that the structure of graphene evolves from a highly ordered layer, to a patchwork of disordered domains, to an essentially amorphous film. These structural changes result in a dramatic decrease in the Hall mobility by orders of magnitude while, remarkably, the Hall concentration remains almost unchanged, suggesting …
Bulk amorphous materials have been studied extensively and are widely used, yet their atomic arrangement remains an open issue. Although they are generally believed to be Zachariasen continuous random networks, recent experimental evidence favours the competing crystallite model in the case of amorphous silicon. In two-dimensional materials, however, the corresponding questions remain unanswered. Here we report the synthesis, by laser-assisted chemical vapour deposition, of centimetre-scale, free-standing, continuous and stable monolayer amorphous carbon, topologically distinct from disordered…
Graphene with high carrier mobility μ is required both for graphene-based electronic devices and for the investigation of the fundamental properties of graphene's Dirac fermions. It is largely accepted that the mobility-limiting factor in graphene is the Coulomb scattering off of charged impurities that reside either on graphene or in the underlying substrate. This is true both for traditional graphene devices on SiO2 substrates and possibly for the recently reported high-mobility suspended and supported devices. An attractive approach to reduce such scattering is to place graphene in an envir…
We present an accurate machine learning (ML) model for atomistic simulations of carbon, constructed using the Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) methodology. The potential, named GAP-20, describes the properties of the bulk crystalline and amorphous phases, crystal surfaces and defect structures with an accuracy approaching that of direct ab initio simulation, but at a significantly reduced cost. We combine structural databases for amorphous carbon and graphene, which we extend substantially by adding suitable configurations, for example, for defects in graphene and other nanostructures. T…

Grain boundary-based mechanisms are known to control the plastic deformation and failure of nanocrystalline metals, with manipulation of the boundary structure a promising path for tuning this response. In this study, the role of interfacial structural disorder on plasticity and failure of nanocrystalline Cu-Zr alloys is investigated with in situ scanning electron microscopy tensile deformation experiments. Two model materials are created, one with only the typical ordered grain boundaries and another with amorphous intergranular films interspersed into the boundary network, while the microstr…
We have studied the effect of photoelectrons on defect formation in graphene during extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiation. Assuming the major role of these low energy electrons, we have mimicked the process by using low energy primary electrons. Graphene is irradiated by an electron beam with energy lower than 80 eV. After e-beam irradiation, it is found that the D peak, I(D), appears in the Raman spectrum, indicating defect formation in graphene. The evolution of I(D)/I(G) follows the amorphization trajectory with increasing irradiation dose, indicating that graphene goes through a transforma…
Electron beam induced deposition with tungsten hexacarbonyl W(CO)6 as precursors leads to granular deposits with varying compositions of tungsten, carbon and oxygen. Depending on the deposition conditions, the deposits are insulating or metallic. We employ an evolutionary algorithm to predict the crystal structures starting from a series of chemical compositions that were determined experimentally. We show that this method leads to better structures than structural relaxation based on guessed initial structures. We approximate the expected amorphous structures by reasonably large unit cells th…
