Grain boundary-based mechanisms are known to control the plastic deformation and failure of nanocrystalline metals, with manipulation of the boundary structure a promising path for tuning this response. In this study, the role of interfacial structural disorder on plasticity and failure of nanocrystalline Cu-Zr alloys is investigated with in situ scanning electron microscopy tensile deformation experiments. Two model materials are created, one with only the typical ordered grain boundaries and another with amorphous intergranular films interspersed into the boundary network, while the microstructures are otherwise identical. Hence, the importance of complexion type on plasticity and failure is isolated by only varying complexion structure. The tensile experiments show that failure of the samples containing amorphous films is significantly retarded, as evidenced by an increase in the cross-sectional area reduction, a decrease in the occurrence of shear-dominated failure, a decrease in strain localization, and fracture surfaces with more elongated dimple features. As a whole, this study provides direct evidence that structural disorder at the grain boundaries can be beneficial for improving the ductility of nanocrystalline metals.

Amorphous complexions in nanocrystalline metals have the potential to improve mechanical properties and radiation tolerance, as well as resistance to grain growth. In this study, the stability of amorphous complexions in binary and ternary Cu-based alloys is investigated by observing the effect of cooling rate from high temperature on the occurrence of amorphous-to-ordered complexion transitions. Bulk Cu-Zr and Cu-Zr-Hf alloy samples were annealed to induce boundary premelting and then quenched through a procedure that induces a gradient of local cooling rate through the sample height. Amorpho…
Amorphous complexions have recently been demonstrated to simultaneously enhance the ductility and stability of certain nanocrystalline alloys. In this study, three quinary alloys (Cu-Zr-Hf-Mo-Nb, Cu-Zr-Hf-Nb-Ti, and Cu-Zr-Hf-Mo-W) are studied to test the hypothesis that increasing the chemical complexity of the grain boundaries will result in thicker amorphous complexions and further stabilize a nanocrystalline microstructure. Significant boundary segregation of Zr, Nb, and Ti is observed in the Cu-Zr-Hf-Nb-Ti alloy, which creates a quaternary interfacial composition that limits average grain …
Grain boundary (GB) enthalpies in nanocrystalline (NC) $\mathrm {Pd_{90}Au_{10}}$ are studied after preparation, thermal relaxation and plastic deformation. By comparing results from atomistic computer simulations and calorimetry, we show that increasing plastic deformation of equilibrated NC $\mathrm {Pd_{90}Au_{10}}$ specimen causes an increase of the stored GB enthalpy $Δγ$. We interpret this change of $Δγ$ as stress-induced complexion transition from a low-energy to a high-energy GB-core state. In fact, GBs behave not only as mere sinks and sources of zero- and one-dimensional defects or a…
Building on the recent discovery of tough nanocrystalline Cu-Zr alloys with amorphous intergranular films, this paper investigates ternary nanocrystalline Cu-Zr-Hf alloys with a focus on understanding how alloy composition affects the formation of disordered complexions. Binary Cu-Zr and Cu-Hf alloys with similar initial grain sizes were also fabricated for comparison. The thermal stability of the nanocrystalline alloys was evaluated by annealing at 950 °C (>95% of the solidus temperatures), followed by detailed characterization of the grain boundary structure. All of the ternary alloys exhibi…
Grain size engineering, particularly reducing grain size into the nanocrystalline regime, offers a promising pathway to further improve the strength-to-weight ratio of Al alloys. Unfortunately, the fabrication of nanocrystalline metals often requires non-equilibrium processing routes, which typically limit the specimen size and require large energy budgets. In this study, multiple dopant atoms in ternary Al alloys are deliberately selected to enable segregation to the grain boundary region and promote the formation of amorphous complexions. Three different fully dense bulk nanocrystalline Al a…
Solute segregation is used to limit grain growth in nanocrystalline metals, but this stabilization often breaks down at high temperatures. Amorphous intergranular films can form in certain alloys at sufficiently high temperatures, providing a possible alternative route to lower grain boundary energy and therefore limit grain growth. In this study, nanocrystalline Ni-W that is annealed at temperatures of 1000 °C and above, then rapidly quenched, is found to contain amorphous intergranular films. These complexions lead to a new, unexpected region of nanocrystalline stability at elevated temperat…
Grain boundary complexions have been observed to affect the mechanical behavior of nanocrystalline metals, improving both strength and ductility. While an explanation for the improved ductility exists, the observed effect on strength remains unexplained. In this work, we use atomistic simulations to explore the influence of ordered and disordered complexions on two deformation mechanisms which are essential for nanocrystalline plasticity, namely dislocation emission and propagation. Both ordered and disordered grain boundary complexions in Cu-Zr are characterized by excess free volume and prom…
Nanocrystalline Cu-3 at.% Zr powders with ~20 nm average grain size were created with mechanical alloying and their thermal stability was studied from 550-950 °C. Annealing drove Zr segregation to the grain boundaries, which led to the formation of amorphous intergranular complexions at higher temperatures. Grain growth was retarded significantly, with 1 week of annealing at 950 °C, or 98% of the solidus temperature, only leading to coarsening of the average grain size to 54 nm. The enhanced thermal stability can be connected to both a reduction in grain boundary energy with doping as well as …
Unique nanorod precipitates with a core-shell structure are found to nucleate from the grain boundaries of a bulk nanocrystalline Al-Ni-Y alloy fabricated via powder consolidation, contributing significantly to stabilization and strengthening. The local structure, chemistry, and evolution of these features during annealing is reported here. In the as-consolidated state, the nanorods can be either structurally ordered or disordered, yet a consistent chemical patterning is found where the core is primarily Al plus C while the shell is enriched with Y. As annealing time increases, more nanorods t…
Nanocrystalline metal alloys show great potential as structural materials, but are often only available in small volumes such as thin films or powders. However, recent research has suggested that dopant segregation and grain boundary structural transitions between states known as complexions can dramatically alter grain size stability and potentially enable activated sintering. In this study, we explore strategic consolidation routes for mechanically alloyed Cu-4 at.% Zr powders to capture the effects of amorphous complexion formation on the densification of bulk nanostructured metals. We obse…
Hybrid Monte Carlo (MC)/molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are conducted to study the microstructures of nanocrystalline (nc) Cu/Ag alloys with various Ag concentrations. When the Ag concentration is below 50 Ag atoms/nm!, an increase in Ag concentration leads to a gradual growth of monolayer grain boundary (GB) complexions into nanolayer complexions. Above the concentration of 50 Ag atoms/nm!, wetting layers with a bulk crystalline phase are observed. The effects of Ag on mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of nc Cu/Ag alloys are investigated in MD simulations of uniaxial tensio…

Nanocrystalline metals are promising radiation tolerant materials due to their large interfacial volume fraction, but irradiation-induced grain growth can eventually degrade any improvement in radiation tolerance. Therefore, methods to limit grain growth and simultaneously improve the radiation tolerance of nanocrystalline metals are needed. Amorphous intergranular films are unique grain boundary structures that are predicted to have improved sink efficiencies due to their increased thickness and amorphous structure, while also improving grain size stability. In this study, ball milled nanocry…
Nanocrystalline metals typically have high fatigue strengths, but low resistance to crack propagation. Amorphous intergranular films are disordered grain boundary complexions that have been shown to delay crack nucleation and slow crack propagation during monotonic loading by diffusing grain boundary strain concentrations, suggesting they may also be beneficial for fatigue properties. To probe this hypothesis, in situ transmission electron microscopy fatigue cycling is performed on Cu-1 at.% Zr thin films thermally treated to have either only ordered grain boundaries or to contain amorphous in…
The mechanical behavior of two nanocrystalline Al alloys, Al-Mg-Y and Al-Fe-Y, is investigated with in-situ micropillar compression testing. Both alloys were strengthened by a hierarchical microstructure including grain boundary segregation, nanometer-thick amorphous complexions, carbide nanorod precipitates with sizes of a few nanometers, and submicron-scale intermetallic particles. The maximum yield strength of the Al-Mg-Y system is measured to be 950 MPa, exceeding that of the Al-Fe-Y system (680 MPa), primarily due to a combination of more carbide nanorods and more amorphous complexions. B…
We develop a new Voronoi protocol, which is a space tessellation method, to generate fully dense (containing no voids) nanocrystalline models of copper (Cu) with precise grain size control; we also perform uniaxial tensile tests using molecular dynamical (MD) simulations to measure the elastic moduli of the grain boundary and the grain interior components at 300 K. We find that the grain boundary deforms more locally compared with the grain core region under thermal vibrations and is elastically less stiff than the core component at finite temperature. The elastic modulus of the grain boundary…

Grain boundaries (GBs) and interfaces in polycrystalline materials are significant research subjects in the field of materials science. Despite a more than 50-year history of their study, there are still many open questions. The main challenge in studying interfacial structures is the extreme complexity of their experimental and theoretical observation and description. The presence of phase-like states at grain boundaries called complexions requires even more effort in their study. Here, we demonstrate the effect of grain boundaries on the properties of polycrystalline minerals on the example …
