As the synthesis of graphene on copper became one of the primary preparation methods for both fundamental research and industrial application, Raman spectra of graphene/Cu systems need to be quantitatively understood regarding how their interactions affect the electronic structure of graphene. Using multi-wavelength Raman spectroscopy, we investigated three types of graphene bound on Cu: graphene grown on Cu foils and Cu film/SiO2, and Cu-evaporated exfoliated graphene. 2D peak frequencies of the first two samples were ~17 cm-1 higher than expected for 1.96 eV excitation even when the effect of strain was considered. More notably, the upshift in 2D decreased with increasing excitation energy. Based on control experiments using Cu-evaporated graphene, we revealed that the spectral anomaly was induced by environment-dependent nonlinear dispersion in the electronic bands of graphene and determined the degree of the electronic modification. We also showed that the large upshifts of G and 2D peaks originating from differential thermal expansion of Cu could be significantly reduced by backing Cu films with dielectric substrates of insignificant thermal expansion. The quantitative analysis of electronic coupling between graphene and Cu presented in this study will be highly useful in characterizing as-grown graphene and possibly in other forms.
In this letter we investigated the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of CaMn7O12 helimagnet from room temperature down to 10 K. The temperature dependence of the Raman mode parameters show remarkable anomalies for both antiferromagnetic and incommensurate transitions that this compound undergoes at low temperatures. The anomalies observed at the magnetic ordering transition indicate a spin-phonon coupling at higher-temperature magnetic transition in this material, while a magnetostrinction effect at the lower-temperature magnetic transition.
We performed Raman spectroscopy measurements under temperature changes from 10 K up to 850 K to probe the phonon-spin coupling in Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The spin-phonon coupling was observed as a softening of the stretching mode, indicating this phonon stabilizes the magnetic interaction. The result indicates the rare earth ionic radius in Re$_2$NiMnO$_6$ double perovskites is not the unique parameter influencing the spin-coupling magnitude.

We report a comprehensive temperature dependent Raman measurements on three different phases of monolayer WS2 from 4K to 330K in a wide spectral range. Our studies revels the anomalous nature of the first as well as the higher order combination modes reflected in the disappearance of the few modes and anomalous temperature evaluation of the phonon self-energy parameters attributed to the detuning of resonance condition and development of strain due to thermal expansion mismatch with the underlying substrate. Our detailed temperature dependence studies also decipher the ambiguity about assignme…
Excitation of four coherent phonon modes of different symmetries has been realized in copper metaborate CuB$_2$O$_4$ via impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS). Phonons were detected by monitoring changes in the linear optical birefringence using the balanced-detection (BD) technique. We compare the results of BD-ISRS experiment to the polarized spontaneous Raman scattering spectra. We show that the agreement between the two sets of data obtained by these allied techniques in a wide phonon frequencies range of 4-14 THz can be achieved by rigorously taking into account the symmetry of the…
Gallium selenide (GaSe) is a 2D material with a thickness-dependent gap, strong non-linear optical coefficients and uncommon interband optical selection rules, making it interesting for optoelectronic and spintronic applications. In this work, we monitor the oxidation dynamics of GaSe with thicknesses ranging from 10 to 200 nm using Raman spectroscopy. In ambient temperature and humidity conditions, the intensity of all Raman modes and the luminescence decrease rapidly with moderate exposure to above-gap illumination. Concurrently, several oxidation products appear in the Raman spectra: Ga$_2$…
The electronic structure and structural evolution of hydrogenated graphene are investigated by Raman spectroscopy with multiple excitations. The excitation energy dependent saturation effect on the ratio of integrated intensities of D and G modes (ID/IG) is revealed and further developed as a quick method for estimation of inter-defect distance and defect density in hydrogenated graphene. At low hydrogen coverage, the chemisorbed H atoms behave like defects in sp2 C=C matrix; while for a high hydrogen coverage, the sp3 C-H bonds become coalescent clusters, resulting in confinement effect on th…
Charge density wave (CDW) is a unique phenomenon mostly realized in two-dimensional (2D) metallic layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Here, we report on Raman spectroscopy of single crystal 1T-VSe2 and observed signature of commensurate CDW (C-CDW) and incommensurate (I-CDW) transition, in the temperature range of 50-120 K. The room temperature Raman spectra showed a sharp A1g mode ~ 206 cm-1 along with two new weak and broad Raman modes associated to Eg mode ~ 257 cm-1 and two-phonon mode (2ph) ~ 332 cm-1. The onset of I-CDW and C-CDW is estimated from resistance measurements su…
We synthesized three-dimensional nanoporous graphene films by a chemical vapor deposition method with nanoporous copper as a catalytic substrate. The resulting nanoporous graphene has the same average pore size as the underlying copper substrate. Our surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) investigation indicates that the nanoporosity of graphene significantly improves the SERS efficiency of graphene as a substrate as compared to planar graphene substrates.
Graphene is a material of great potential in a broad range of applications, for each of which specific tuning of the materials properties is required. This can be achieved, for example, by covalent functionalization. We have exploited two protocols for surface grafting, either by diazonium salts or by nucleophilic exchange, to perform graphene covalent modification directly on a copper substrate, which is routinely used for the synthesis of the material, and investigated the difference in reactivity compared with other substrates. The successful functionalization was confirmed by Raman and sur…
Strain can be used as an alternate way to tune the electronic properties of graphene. Here we demonstrate that it is possible to tune the uniform strain of graphene simply by changing the chemical vapor deposition growth temperature of graphene on copper. Due to the cooling of the graphene on copper system, we can induce a uniform compressive strain on graphene. The strain is analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, where a shift in the 2D peak is observed and compared to our ab initio calculations of the graphene on copper system as a function of strain.
We grow AlN/4H-SiC and AlN/6H-SiC heterostructures by physical vapor deposition and characterize the heterointerface with nanoscale resolution. Furthermore, we investigate the spatial stress and strain distribution in these heterostructures using confocal Raman spectroscopy. We measure the spectral shifts of various vibrational Raman modes across the heterointerface and along the entire depth of the 4H- and 6H-SiC layers. Using the earlier experimental prediction for the phonon-deformation potential constants, we determine the stress tensor components in SiC as a function of the distance from …
Phthalocyanines as organic semiconductors and molecular magnets provide plenty of industrial or high-tech applications from dyes and pigments up to gas sensors, molecular electronics, spintronics and quantum computing. Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) belongs among the most used phthalocyanines, typically in the form of powder or films but self-grown nanowires are also known. Here we describe an opposite, i.e., top-down approach based on fabrication of ordered arrays of CuPc microstructures (microdisks) using electron beam lithography and other steps. Among critical points of this approach belongs…
The two-dimensional silicon allotrope, silicene, could spur the development of new and original concepts in Si-based nanotechnology. Up to now silicene can only be epitaxially synthesized on a supporting substrate such as Ag(111). Even though the structural and electronic properties of these epitaxial silicene layers have been intensively studied, very little is known about its vibrational characteristics. Here, we present a detailed study of epitaxial silicene on Ag(111) using \textit{in situ} Raman spectroscopy, which is one of the most extensively employed experimental techniques to charact…
This is a representation of the first Raman and IR / FIR spectra for orthorhombic copper polysilicate, CuSiO3, measured at room temperature on polycrystalline samples and a comparison of the optical phonons with those observed for the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3. CuSiO3 represents a further example of a quasi-one-dimensional spin = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system. A mode assignment for the silicate is given. From the analysis of the Davydov doublets a reduced intralayer- to-interlayer bond strength of the silicate in comparison to the germanate is obtained allowing for different…
We synthesize large-area graphene via atmospheric-pressure (AP) chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on copper, and transfer to SiO2 wafers. In contrast to low-pressure (LP) CVD on copper, optical contrast and atomic force microscopy measurements show AP-CVD graphene contains significant multi-layer areas. Raman spectroscopy always shows a single Lorentzian 2D peak, however systematic differences are observed in the 2D peak energy, width, and intensity for single- and multi-layer regions. We conclude that graphene multi-layers grown by AP-CVD on Cu are rotationally disordered.
Materials with ultralow thermal conductivity are of great interest for efficient energy conversion and thermal barrier coating. Copper-based semiconductors such as copper chalcogenides and copper halides are known to possess extreme low thermal conductivity, whereas the fundamental origin of the low thermal conductivity observed in the copper-based materials remains elusive. Here, we reveal that s-d coupling induced giant phonon anharmonicity is the fundamental mechanism responsible for the ultralow thermal conductivity of copper compounds. The symmetry controlled strong coupling of high-lying…
Inclusions of sp-hybridised, trans-polyacetylene [trans-(CH)x] and poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) chains are revealed using resonant Raman scattering (RRS) investigation of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H) films in the near IR - UV range. The RRS spectra of trans-(CH)x core Ag modes and the PPV CC-H phenylene mode are found to transform and disperse as the laser excitation energy \hbarωL is increased from near IR through visible to UV, whereas sp-bonded inclusions only become evident in UV. This is attributed to \hbarωL probing of trans-(CH)x chain inhomogeneity and the distribution of …
We have studied the coherent dynamics of G-band phonons in single-walled carbon nanotubes through impulsive stimulated Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering. The probe energy dependence of phonon amplitude as well as preferential occurrence between Stokes and anti-Stokes components in response to chirped-pulse excitation are well explained within our model. The temperature dependence of the observed dephasing rate clearly exhibits a thermally-activated component, with an activation energy that coincides with the frequency of the radial breathing mode (RBM). This fact provides a clear picture…
Copper borate Cu$_3$(BO$_3$)$_2$ is a complex compound with a layered crystallographic structure in which the Jahn-Teller active and magnetic copper Cu$^{2+}$ ions occupy sixteen nonequivalent positions in the unit cell displaying controversial magnetic behavior. In this paper, we report on the infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of the lattice dynamics and the electronic structure of 3$d^9$ copper states below the fundamental absorption band. The lattice dynamics is characterized by a large number of phonons due to a low $P\overline{1}$ space group symmetry and a large unit cell with Z=1…
Rhombohedral-stacked few-layer graphene (FLG) has been receiving an ever-increasing attention owing to its peculiar electronic properties that could lead to enticing phenomena such as superconductivity and magnetic ordering. Up to now, experimental studies on such material have been mainly limited by the difficulty in isolating it in thickness exceeding 3 atomic layers with device-compatible size. In this work, rhombohedral graphene with thickness up to 9 layers and areas up to ~50 micrometers square is grown via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on suspended Cu foils and transferred onto target…
Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) on copper nuclei has been applied for studies of the electronic properties of quasi-two-dimensional low-temperature superconductor CuS (covellite) in the temperature region between 1.47 and 290 K. Two NQR signals corresponding to two non-equivalent sites of copper in the structure, Cu(1) and Cu(2), has been found. The temperature dependences of copper quadrupole frequencies, line-widths and spin-lattice relaxation rates, which so far had never been investigated so precisely for this material, altogether demonstrate the structural phase transition near 55 K, w…

Copper nanoparticles have been grown in silica matrix by annealing of the sol-gel prepared porous matrix impregnated with the copper nitrate. The annealing has been performed in air, successively in air and hydrogen, and in hydrogen. Cu nanoparticles in size range of 2-65 nm have been grown depending on annealing conditions. Annealing in air results in copper oxide nanoparticles (Cu2O) growth as well. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and optical spectroscopy of the copper nanoparticles in silica matrix have been performed. The copper nanoparticles of two types are grown: spherical mature…
It is important to understand the electronic interaction between single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and graphene in order to use them efficiently in multifunctional hybrid devices. Here we deposited SWNT bundles on graphene-covered copper and SiO2 substrates by chemical vapor deposition and investigated the charge transfer between them by Raman spectroscopy. Our results revealed that, on both copper and SiO2 substrates, graphene donates electrons to the SWNTs, resulting in p-type doped graphene and n-type doped SWNTs.
Antiferromagnetic materials with strong spin-phonon coupling have the potential for spintronic applications. Here, we report the structural, magnetic, and vibrational properties of 12R-BaTi0.4Mn0.6O3. Temperature-dependent magnetization data show the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions. Correlation between magnetic and vibrational properties are probed by using temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopic measurements. Two of the Raman active phonons show deviation from anharmonic behaviour at low temperatures which can be attributed to spin-phonon coupling. The strength of coupling i…
A novel route for the synthesis of large area graphene by an indigenously built electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) setup has been reported in this work. A unique 2.45 GHz permanent magnet type ECR PECVD system has been designed and developed for the growth of various nano-structures and films. The apparatus has a unique advantage to synthesize large area graphene at much lower additional substrate heating than heat supplied by an external oven in conventional thermal CVD method. A major amount of heat is supplied here by ECR plasma. Polycrystal…
Copper oxide thin films are deposited on quartz substrates by DC magnetron sputtering and the effect of deposition temperature on their optoelectronic properties is examined in detail. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and four-probe sheet resistance measurements are used to characterize the surface morphology, structural, optical, and electrical properties respectively. Deposition is carried out at room temperature and between 200 and 300 °C. XRD analysis indicates that the oxide formed is primarily Cu$_2$O and the a…
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) of graphene on copper is one of the most efficient technologies for producing high quality graphene for large areas. Nevertheless, still high pressures and big quantities of precursor gas are currently required. The objective of this work is to deposit graphene using the monolayer-formation-time concept (t) from the kinetic theory of gases, which leads to an economization of the precursor gas, a minimization of the process pressure and the time needed to grow a graphene monolayer. Our process has been designed taking into account the dependence of t on the press…
Epitaxial BiFeO3/SrRuO3 superlattices have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on a (001) oriented LaAlO3 substrate and probed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. To investigate the structural competition between rhombohedral BiFeO3 and orthorhombic SrRuO3 the total thickness of all SLs was kept constant and the bilayer thickness (period) Λ was varied. The interlayer strain effects are therefore tuned from large strain effects (short Λ period) to quasi-relaxed structure (large Λ). A complementary investigation using X-ray diffraction and phonon dynamics hints to change from a rhombo…
Through a combination of monitoring the Raman spectral characteristics of 2D materials grown on copper catalyst layers, and wafer scale automated detection of the fraction of transferred material, we reproducibly achieve transfers with over 97.5% monolayer hexagonal boron nitride and 99.7% monolayer graphene coverage, for up to 300 mm diameter wafers. We find a strong correlation between the transfer coverage obtained for graphene and the emergence of a lower wavenumber 2D- peak component, with the concurrent disappearance of the higher wavenumber 2D+ peak component during oxidation of the cat…
In this letter, we report that the special coupling between Dirac fermion and lattice vibrations, in other words, electron-phonon coupling (EPC), in silicene layers on Ag(111) surface was probed by an in-situ Raman spectroscopy. We find the EPC is significantly modulated due to tensile strain, which results from the lattice mismatch between silicene and the substrate, and the charge doping from the substrate. The special phonon modes corresponding to two-dimensional electron gas scattering at edge sites in the silicene were identified. Detecting relationship between EPC and Dirac fermion throu…
Tetragonal phase of CuMnAs progressively appears as one of the key materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics due to efficient current-induced spin-orbit torques whose existence can be directly inferred from crystal symmetry. Theoretical understanding of spintronic phenomena in this material, however, relies on the detailed knowledge of electronic structure (band structure and corresponding wave functions) which has so far been tested only to a limited extent. We show that AC permittivity (obtained from ellipsometry) and UV photoelectron spectra agree with density functional calculations. Tog…
The interaction between graphene and metals represents an important issue for the large-area preparation of graphene, graphene transfer and the contact quality in graphene devices. We demonstrate a simple method for estimating and manipulating the level of interaction between graphene and copper single crystals through heat treatment, at temperatures from 298K to 1073K. We performed an in-situ Raman spectroscopy showing Cu face-specific behavior of the overlying graphene during the heat treatment. On Cu(111) the interaction is consistent with theoretical predictions and remains stable, whereas…
Layered inorganic materials, such as the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), have attracted much attention due to their exceptional electronic and optical properties. Reliable synthesis and characterization of these materials must be developed if these properties are to be exploited. Herein, we present low-frequency Raman analysis of MoS2, MoSe2, WSe2 and WS2 grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Raman spectra are acquired over large areas allowing changes in the position and intensity of the shear and layer-breathing modes to be visualized in maps. This allows detailed characterizat…
We report an experimental investigation on the irradiation of copper thin films with high repetition rate femtosecond laser pulses (1040 nm, 50 MHz), in ambient air and liquid water. We observe a novel, striking phenomenon of chromatic copper oxides (cupric oxide and cuprous oxide) annuli generation. The characteristic features of the chromatic copper oxide annuli are studied by exploiting micro-Raman Spectroscopy, Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopies. In the case of irradiation in water, the seldom investigated effects of the immersion time, after irradiation with a fixed number of puls…
Though graphene has been intensively studied by Raman spectroscopy, in this letter, we report a study of second-order overtone and combinational Raman modes in an unexplored range of 1690-2150 cm-1 in nonsuspended commensurate (AB-stacked), incommensurate (folded) and suspended graphene layers. Based on the double resonance theory, four dominant modes in this range have been assigned as 2oTO (M band), iTA+LO, iTO+LA and LO+LA. Differing to AB-stacked bilayer graphene or few layer graphene, the M band disappears in single layer graphene. Systematic analysis reveals that interlayer interaction i…
While producing comparable efficiencies and showing similar properties when probed by conventional techniques, such as Raman, photoluminescence and X-ray diffraction, two thin film solar cell materials with complex structures, such as quaternary compound CZTSe, may in fact differ significantly in their microscopic structures. In this work, laser induced modification Raman spectroscopy, coupled with high spatial resolution and high temperature capability, is demonstrated as an effective tool to obtain important structure information beyond that the conventional characterization techniques can o…
The pressure evolution of the Raman spectrum of graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition on polycrystalline copper is investigated with the use of a polar and a non-polar pressure transmitting medium (PTM). The G and 2D Raman bands exhibit similar pressure slopes for both PTM irrespectively of any unintentional initial doping and/or strain of the samples. Our analysis suggests that any pressure-induced charge transfer effects are negligibly small to influence the pressure response of graphene. This is determined by the mechanical stress due to the pressure-induced substrate contraction and…
We present a transfer-free preparation method for graphene on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) crystals by chemical vapor deposition of graphene via a catalytic proximity effect, i.e. activated by a Cu catalyst close-by . We demonstrate the full coverage by monolayer graphene of half-millimeter-sized hexagonal boron nitride crystals exfoliated on a copper foil prior to growth. We demonstrate that the proximity of the copper catalyst ensures high yield with the growth rate estimated between of 2μm/min to 5μm/min . Optical and electron microscopies together with confocal micro-Raman mapping confir…
Disordered carbon often exhibit a complex Raman spectrum, with four to six components. Here, a large variety of disordered carbons, forming a collection of samples with a great variety of structures, are analysed using multi-wavelength Raman microscopy (325.0, 514.5, 785.0 nm). They allow us to extend Raman behaviour known for nano-crystalline graphite to amorphous carbons, (dependence with the excitation wavelength) and other known for amorphous carbons to nano-crystalline graphite, (differentiation of the smallest cluster size probed using different excitation wavelengths). Experimental spec…
The dominant phonon wavevectors $q^{*}$ probed by the 2D Raman mode of graphene are highly anisotropic and rotate with the orientation of the polarizer:analyzer direction relative to the lattice. The corresponding electronic transitions connect the electronic equibandgap contours where the product of the ingoing and outgoing optical matrix elements is strongest, showing a finite component along $\bm{K}-\bmΓ$ that sensitively determines $q^{*}$. We revoke the notion of 'inner' and 'outer' processes. Our findings explain the splitting of the 2D mode of graphene under uniaxial tensile strain. The…
Unveiling temperature and phase boundaries in laser-driven shocked and released copper: insights from ultra-fast X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy up to 300 GPa
Electronic Raman scattering and optical phonon self-energies are studied on single crystals of $LuB_{12}$ with different isotopic composition in the temperature region 10-650K and at pressures up to 10 GPa. The shape and energy position of the spectral peaks depend on the magnitude of the probed wave vector, temperature, and symmetry of excitations. We simulated experimental spectra using electronic structure obtained in the density function theory and taking into account the electron-phonon scattering. The emergence of a broad continuum in the spectra is identified with the inelastic scatteri…
The appearance of a broad peak at $\sim$1550 cm$^{-1}$ (G$^{-}$ peak) in carbon nanotube resonant Raman scattering spectra has been conventionally attributed to the presence of metallic nanotubes. Here, we present resonant Raman measurements on macroscopic nanotube ensembles enriched in armchair species prepared through density gradient ultracentrifugation. Our data clearly demonstrate that the broad G$^{-}$ mode is absent for armchair structures and appears only when the excitation laser is resonant with non-armchair "metals." Due to the large number ($\sim$10$^{10}$) of nanotubes across seve…
We report that graphene films with thickness ranging from 1 to 7 layers can be controllably synthesized on the surface of polycrystalline copper by a chemical vapour deposition method. The number of layers of graphene is controlled precisely by regulating the flow ratio of CH4 and H2, the reaction pressure, the temperature and the reaction time. The synthesized graphene films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the graphene films transferred from copper t…
We report the results of X-ray spectroscopy and Raman measurements of as-prepared graphene on a high quality copper surface and the same materials after 1.5 years under different conditions (ambient and low humidity). The obtained results were compared with density functional theory calculations of the formation energies and electronic structures of various structural defects in graphene/Cu interfaces. For evaluation of the stability of the carbon cover, we propose a two-step model. The first step is oxidation of the graphene, and the second is perforation of graphene with the removal of carbo…
We demonstrate a simple technique to transfer CVD-grown graphene from copper and platinum substrates using a soak-and-peel delamination technique utilizing only hot deionized water. The lack of chemical etchants results in cleaner CVD graphene films minimizing unintentional doping, as confirmed by Raman and electrical measurements. The process allows the reuse of substrates and hence can enable the use of oriented substrates for growth of higher quality graphene, and is an inherently inexpensive and scalable process for large-area production.
The electronic structure of the unoccupied and occupied states of potassium (K)-doped and undoped picene crystalline films has been investigated by using the element-selective and bulk-sensitive photon-detection methods of X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies. We observed the formation of the doping-induced unoccupied and occupied electronic states in K-doped picene. By applying the inner-shell resonant-excitation experiments, we observed the evidence for the orbital hybridization between K and picene near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, the resonant X-ray emission experiment suggests t…
We investigated the atomic structures, Raman spectroscopic and electrical transport properties of individual graphene nanoribbons (GNRs, widths ~10-30 nm) derived from sonochemical unzipping of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed a high percentage of two-layer (2L) GNRs and some single layer ribbons. The layer-layer stacking angles ranged from 0o to 30o including average chiral angles near 30o (armchair orientation) or 0o (zigzag orientation). A large fraction of GNRs with bent and smooth edges was observed, while the rest…
The use of laser with a Gaussian-beam profile is frequently adopted in attempts of crystallizing non-single-crystal thin films; however, it merely results in the formation of poly-crystal thin films. In this paper, selective area crystallization of non-single-crystal copper(II) oxide (CuO) is described. The crystallization is induced by laser, laser-induced crystallization, with a beam profile in the shape of chevron. The crystallization is verified by the exhibition of a transition from a non-single-crystal phase consisting of small 100 nm x 100 nm grains of CuO to a single-crystal phase of c…
The adoption of graphene in electronics, optoelectronics and photonics is hindered by the difficulty in obtaining high quality material on technologically-relevant substrates, over wafer-scale sizes and with metal contamination levels compatible with industrial requirements. To date, the direct growth of graphene on insulating substrates has proved to be challenging, usually requiring metal-catalysts or yielding defective graphene. In this work, we demonstrate a metal-free approach implemented in commercially available reactors to obtain high-quality monolayer graphene on c-plane sapphire subs…
The resistivity and the Hall effect in the copper-oxide high-temperature superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) are remarkably anisotropic. Using a thin film of YBCO grown on an off-axis cut SrTiO$_3$ substrate allows one to investigate these anisotropic transport properties in a planar and well-defined sample geometry employing a homogeneous current density. In the normal state, the Hall voltage probed parallel to the copper-oxide layers is positive and strongly temperature dependent, whereas the out-of-plane Hall voltage is negative and almost temperature independent. The results c…
We have demonstrated a new method for the large-area graphene growth, which can lead to a scalable low-cost high-throughput production technology. The method is based on growing single-layer or few-layer graphene films from a molten phase. The process involves dissolving carbon inside a molten metal at a specified temperature and then allowing the dissolved carbon to nucleate and grow on top of the melt at a lower temperature. The examined metals for the metal - carbon melts included copper and nickel. For the latter, pristine single layer graphene was grown successfully. The resulting graphen…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of high-quality chemical vapor-deposited (CVD) bilayer graphene (BLG). In particular, we demonstrate that CVD-grown BLG can mechanically be detached from the copper foil by an hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) crystal after oxidation of the copper-to-BLG interface. Confocal Raman spectroscopy reveals an AB-stacking order of the BLG crystals and a high structural quality. From transport measurements on fully encapsulated hBN/BLG/hBN Hall bar devices we extract charge carrier mobilities up to 180,000 cm$^2$/(Vs) at 2 K and up to 40,000 cm$^2$/(Vs) at…
The discovery of electric field induced bandgap opening in bilayer graphene opens new door for making semiconducting graphene without aggressive size scaling or using expensive substrates. However, bilayer graphene samples have been limited to um size scale thus far, and synthesis of wafer scale bilayer graphene posts tremendous challenge. Here we report homogeneous bilayer graphene films over at least 2 inch x 2 inch area, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on copper foil and subsequently transferred to arbitrary substrates. The bilayer nature of graphene film is verified by Raman spect…
In monolayer graphene, substitutional doping during growth can be used to alter its electronic properties. We used scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), Raman spectroscopy, x-ray spectroscopy, and first principles calculations to characterize individual nitrogen dopants in monolayer graphene grown on a copper substrate. Individual nitrogen atoms were incorporated as graphitic dopants, and a fraction of the extra electron on each nitrogen atom was delocalized into the graphene lattice. The electronic structure of nitrogen-doped graphene was strongly modified only within a few lattice spacings of…
