We consider the existence of spatially localized traveling wave solutions of the mass-in-mass lattice. Under an anti-resonance condition first discovered by Kevrekidis, Stefanov and Xu, we prove that such solutions exist in two distinguished limits, the first where the mass of the internal resonator is small and the second where the internal spring is very stiff. We then numerically simulate the solutions and these simulations indicate that the anti-resonant traveling waves are weakly unstable
In this paper, persistence of solitary wave solutions of the regularized long wave equation with small perturbations are investigated by the geometric singular perturbation theory. Two different kinds of the perturbations are considered in this paper: one is the weak backward diffusion and dissipation, the other is the Marangoni effects. Indeed, the solitary wave persists under small perturbations. Furthermore, the different perturbations do affect the proper wave speed ensuring the persistence of the solitary waves. Finally, numerical simulations are utilized to confirm the theoretical result…
This paper is concerned with the nonlinear Schrodinger lattice with nonlinear hopping. Via variation approach and the Nehari manifold argument, we obtain two types of solution: periodic ground state and localized ground state. Moreover, we consider the convergence of periodic solutions to the solitary wave.
In this paper we consider a three-component system of one dimensional long wave-short wave interaction equations. The system has two-parameter family of solitary wave solutions. We prove orbital stability of the solitary wave solutions using variational methods.
In this paper, we study the stability of smooth solitary waves for the $b$-family of Camassa-Holm equations. We verify the stability criterion analytically for the general case $b>1$ by the idea of the monotonicity of the period function for planar Hamiltonian systems and show that the smooth solitary waves are orbitally stable, which gives a positive answer to the open problem proposed by Lafortune and Pelinovsky [S. Lafortune, D. E. Pelinovsky, Stability of smooth solitary waves in the $b$-Camassa-Holm equation].
Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations with focusing power nonlinearities have solitary wave solutions. The spectra of the linearized operators around these solitary waves are intimately connected to stability properties of the solitary waves, and to the long-time dynamics of solutions of (NLS). We study these spectra in detail, both analytically and numerically.
We study the orbital instability of solitary waves for a generalized derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We give sufficient conditions for instability of a two-parameter family of solitary waves in a degenerate case.
We prove the existence of a new type of solutions to a nonlinear Schrödinger system. These solutions, which we call "multi-speeds solitary waves", are behaving at large time as a couple of scalar solitary waves traveling at different speeds. The proof relies on the construction of approximations of the multi-speeds solitary waves by solving the system backwards in time and using energy methods to obtain uniform estimates.
In this paper we establish a rigorous spectral stability analysis for solitary waves associated to a generalized fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony type equation. Besides the well known smooth and positive solitary wave with large wave speed, we present the existence of smooth negative solitary waves having small wave speed. The spectral stability is then determined by analysing the behaviour of the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum at the solitary wave. Since the analytical solution is not known, we generate t…
We prove that the 2D finite depth capillary water wave equations admit no solitary wave solutions. This closes the existence/non-existence problem for solitary water waves in 2D, under the classical assumptions of incompressibility and irrotationality, and with the physical parameters being gravity, surface tension and the fluid depth.
We study the existence of solitary-wave solutions and some of their properties for a general multicomponent long-wave-short-wave interaction system. The system considered here describes the nonlinear interaction of multiple short waves with a long-wave, and is of interest in plasma physics, nonlinear optics, and fluid dynamics.
We prove that the collision of two solitary waves of the BBM equation is inelastic but almost elastic in the case where one solitary wave is small in the energy space. We show precise estimates of the nonzero residue due to the collision. Moreover, we give a precise description of the collision phenomenon (change of size of the solitary waves).
In this paper, we construct center stable manifolds of unstable line solitary waves for the Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation on $\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{T}_L$ and show the orbital stability of the unstable line solitary waves on the center stable manifolds, which yields the asymptotic stability of unstable solitary waves on the center stable manifolds near by stable line solitary waves. The construction is based on the graph transform approach by Nakanishi and Schlag. Applying the bilinear estimate on Fourier restriction spaces by Molinet and Pilod and modifying the mobile distance by Nakanishi a…
We consider a system of coupled nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations in one space dimension. First, we prove the existence of multi-speed solitary waves, i.e solutions to the system with each component behaving at large times as a solitary wave. Then, we investigate numerically the interaction of two solitary waves supported each on one component. Among the possible outcomes, we find elastic and inelastic interactions, collision with mass extraction and reflexion.
For the Schrödinger equation with a cubic-quintic, focusing-defocusing nonlinearity in one space dimension, we prove the asymptotic stability of solitary waves for a large range of admissible frequencies. For this model, the linearized problem around the solitary waves does not have internal mode nor resonance.
The aim of this paper is to establish the existence of solitary wave solutions for two classes of two-layers systems modeling the propagation of internal waves. More precisely we will consider the Boussinesq-Full dispersion system and the Intermediate Long Wave (ILW) system together with its Benjamin-Ono (BO) limit.
We describe completely 2-solitary waves related to the ground state of the nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation \begin{equation*} \partial_{tt}u+2α\partial_{t}u-Δu+u-|u|^{p-1}u=0 \end{equation*} on $\bf R^N$, for $1\leq N\leq 5$ and energy subcritical exponents $p>2$. The description is twofold. First, we prove that 2-solitary waves with same sign do not exist. Second, we construct and classify the full family of 2-solitary waves in the case of opposite signs. Close to the sum of two remote solitary waves, it turns out that only the components of the initial data in the unstable direction of…
This work is devoted to study the dynamics of the supercritical gKDV equations near solitary waves in the energy space $H^1$. We construct smooth local center-stable, center-unstable and center manifolds near the manifold of solitary waves and give a detailed description of the local dynamics near solitary waves. In particular, the instability is characterized as following: any forward flow not starting from the center-stable manifold will leave a neighborhood of the manifold of solitary waves exponentially fast. Moreover, orbital stability is proved on the center manifold, which implies the u…
In this paper, we study a compound Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation with a higher-order nonlinearity. A class of solitary wave solutions is obtained by means of a series expansion.
This work studies the rotation-generalized Benjamin-Ono equation which is derived from the theory of weakly nonlinear long surface and internal waves in deep water under the presence of rotation. It is shown that the solitary-wave solutions are orbitally stable for certain wave speeds.
We prove the nonexistence of two-dimensional solitary gravity water waves with subcritical wave speeds and an arbitrary distribution of vorticity. This is a longstanding open problem, and even in the irrotational case there are only partial results relying on sign conditions or smallness assumptions. As a corollary, we obtain a relatively complete classification of solitary waves: they must be supercritical, symmetric, and monotonically decreasing on either side of a central crest. The proof introduces a new function which is related to the so-called flow force and has several surprising prope…
In this paper, we study the existence and concentration of solitary waves for a class of generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations with the potential in $\mathbb{R}^2$ via the variational methods.
Considered herein is the integrable two-component Camassa-Holm shallow water system derived in the context of shallow water theory, which admits blow-up solutions and the solitary waves interacting like solitons. Using modulation theory, and combining the almost monotonicity of a local version of energy with the argument on the stability of a single solitary wave, we prove that the train of $N$ solitary waves, which are sufficiently decoupled, is orbitally stable in the energy space $H^1(\R)\times L^2(\R)$.

We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the localised solitary waves for the generalised Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. In particular, we compute their first order asymptotics in any dimension $N \geq 2$.
In this paper, we consider the Fornberg-Whitham equation and a family of solitary wave solutions is found by using minimization principle, where a related penalization function and the concentration-compactness lemma play a key role in our proof. Besides, we also prove that the family of solitary solutions is orbital stable and decay exponentially when speed wave c is bigger than 1.
The long-time asymptotics is analyzed for finite energy solutions of the 1D discrete Schrödinger equation coupled to a nonlinear oscillator. The coupled system is invariant with respect to the phase rotation group. For initial states close to a solitary wave, the solution converges to a sum of another solitary wave and dispersive wave which is a solution to the free Schrödinger equation. The proofs use the strategy of Buslaev-Perelman: the linerization of the dynamics on the solitary manifold, the symplectic orthogonal projection, method of majorants, etc.
In this paper we consider the decay rate of solitary-wave solutions to some classes of non-linear and non-local dispersive equations, including for example the Whitham equation and a Whitham--Boussinesq system. The dispersive term is represented by a Fourier multiplier operator that has a real analytic symbol, and we show that all supercritical solitary-wave solutions decay exponentially, and moreover provide the exact decay rate, which in general will depend on the speed of the wave. We also prove that solitary waves have only one crest and are symmetric for some class of equations.
We improve the decay argument by [Bona and Li, J. Math. Pures Appl., 1997] for solitary waves of general dispersive equations and illustrate it in the proof for the exponential decay of solitary waves to steady Degasperis-Procesi equation in the nonlocal formulation. In addition, we give a method which confirms the symmetry of solitary waves of the maximum height. Finally, we discover how the symmetric structure is connected to the steady structure of solutions to the Degasperis-Procesi equation, and give a more intuitive proof for symmetric solutions to be traveling waves. The improved argume…
We study the nonrelativistic limit of solitary waves from Nonlinear Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations (NMKG) to Nonlinear Schrodinger-Poisson equations (NSP). It is known that the existence or multiplicity of positive solutions depends on the choices of parameters the equations contain. In this paper, we prove that for a given positive solitary wave of NSP, which is found in Ruiz's work \cite{R}, there corresponds a family of positive solitary waves of NMKG under the nonrelativistic limit. Notably, our results contain a new result of existence of positive solutions to (NMKG) with lower order nonl…
We study the existence of solitary waves in a diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) lattice. For monatomic FPUT the traveling wave equations are a regular perturbation of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation's but, surprisingly, we find that for the diatomic lattice the traveling wave equations are a singular perturbation of KdV's. Using a method first developed by Beale to study traveling solutions for capillary-gravity waves we demonstrate that for wave speeds in slight excess of the lattice's speed of sound there exists nontrivial traveling wave solutions which are the superposition an e…
To understand an oft-observed but poorly understood phenomenon in which a solitary wave in a dispersive equation slowly deteriorates due to a persistent emission of radiation (i.e. a ``radiating solitary wave''), we propose a bare-bones model which captures many essential features and which we are capable of analyzing completely by way of the Laplace transform. We find that wave amplitude decreases at an exponential rate but with a decay constant that is (in many cases) small beyond all orders of the frequency.
In this paper we study existence and asymptotic behavior of solitary-wave solutions for the generalized Shrira equation, a two-dimensional model appearing in shear flows. The method used to show the existence of such special solutions is based on the mountain pass theorem. One of the main difficulties consists in showing the compact embedding of the energy space in the Lesbesgue spaces; this is dealt with interpolation theory. Regularity and decay properties of the solitary waves are also established.
In this paper, we construct center stable manifolds around unstable line solitary waves of the Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation on two dimensional cylindrical spaces with $2πL$ period. In the previous paper, center stable manifolds around unstable line solitary waves have been constructed without critical speed $c =4n^2/5L^2$ for positive integer $n>1$. Since the linearized operator around line solitary waves with critical speed is degenerate, we prove the stability condition of the center stable manifold for critical speed by applying to the estimate of 4th order term of a Lyapunov function.
In this note, we define a moment of instability m(c) for internal solitary waves in continuously stratified fluids, which seems not to have been done before. To underline the suitability of the proposed moment of instability, we identify the relation m"(c)=0 as a formal Fredholm condition, and we show that m(c) displays a definite sign for small-amplitude waves.
A fundamental question in the study of water waves is the existence and stability of solitary waves. Solitary waves have been proved to exist and have been studied in many interesting situations, and often arise from the balance of different forces/factors influencing the fluid dynamics, e.g. gravity, surface tension or the fluid bottom. However, the existence of solitary waves has remained an open problem in two of the simplest cases, namely for either pure gravity waves or pure capillary waves in infinite depth. In this article we settle both of these questions in two space dimensions. Preci…
We consider the initial-value problem for the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the presence of an attractive delta potential. We show that for sufficiently small initial data, the corresponding global solution decomposes into a small solitary wave plus a radiation term that decays and scatters as $t\to\infty$. In particular, we establish the asymptotic stability of the family of small solitary waves.
In this work, we present a stability criteria for the solitary wave solutions to a BBM system that contains coupled nonlinear terms. Using the idea by Bona, Chen and Karakashian and exploiting the accurate point spectrum information of the associated Schrodinger operator, we improve the stability results previously got by Pereira.
In this paper, we study the solitary wave and the Cauchy problem for Half-wave-Schrödinger equations in the plane. First, we show the existence and orbital stability of the ground states. Secondly, we prove that traveling waves exist and converge to zero as the velocity tends to $1$. Finally, we solve the Cauchy problem for initial data in $L^{2}_{x}H^{s}_{y}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$, with $s>\frac{1}{2}$.
We study here the existence of solitary wave solutions of a generalized two-component Camassa-Holm system. In addition to those smooth solitary-wave solutions, we show that there are solitary waves with singularities: peaked and cusped solitary waves. We also demonstrate that all smooth solitary waves are orbitally stable in the energy space. We finally give a sufficient condition for global strong solutions to the equation without certain parameters.
We investigate the particle trajectories in solitary waves with vorticity, where the vorticity is assumed to be negative and decrease with depth. We show that the individual particle moves in a similar way as that in the irrotational case if the underlying laminar flow is favorable, that is, the flow is moving in the same direction as the wave propagation throughout the fluid, and show that if the underlying current is not favorable, some particles in a sufficiently small solitary wave move to the opposite direction of wave propagation along a path with a single loop or hump .
In this note we study solitary wave solutions of a class of Whitham-Boussinesq systems which includes the bi-directional Whitham system as a special example. The travelling wave version of the evolution system can be reduced to a single evolution equation, similar to a class of equations studied by Ehrnström, Groves and Wahlén. In that paper the authors prove the existence of solitary wave solutions using a constrained minimization argument adapted to noncoercive functionals, developed by Buffoni, Groves and Wahlén, together with the concentration-compactness principle.
In this paper we study a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations which admit families of small solitary wave solutions. We consider solutions which are small in the energy space $H^1$, and decompose them into solitary wave and dispersive wave components. The goal is to establish the asymptotic stability of the solitary wave and the asymptotic completeness of the dispersive wave. That is, we show that as $t \to \infty$, the solitary wave component converges to a fixed solitary wave, and the dispersive component converges to a solution of the free Schrödinger equation.
We derive the precise stability criterion for smooth solitary waves in the b-family of Camassa-Holm equations. The smooth solitary waves exist on the constant background. In the integrable cases b = 2 and b = 3, we show analytically that the stability criterion is satisfied and smooth solitary waves are orbitally stable with respect to perturbations in $H^3(\mathbb{R})$. In the non-integrable cases, we show numerically and asymptotically that the stability criterion is satisfied for every b > 1. The orbital stability theory relies on a different Hamiltonian formulation compared to the Hamilton…
We prove an abstract instability result for an eigenvalue problem with parameter. We apply this criterion to show the transverse linear instability of solitary waves on various examples from mathematical physics.
We construct bi-frequency solitary waves of the nonlinear Dirac equation with the scalar self-interaction (the Soler model) and the Dirac--Klein--Gordon with Yukawa self-interaction. These solitary waves provide a natural implementation of qubit and qudit states in the theory of quantum computing. We show the relation of $\pm 2ω\mathrm{i}$ eigenvalues of the linearization at a solitary wave, Bogoliubov $\mathbf{SU}(1,1)$ symmetry, and the existence of bi-frequency solitary waves. We show that the spectral stability of these waves reduces to spectral stability of usual (one-frequency) solitary …
