We describe completely 2-solitary waves related to the ground state of the nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation \begin{equation*} \partial_{tt}u+2α\partial_{t}u-Δu+u-|u|^{p-1}u=0 \end{equation*} on $\bf R^N$, for $1\leq N\leq 5$ and energy subcritical exponents $p>2$. The description is twofold.
First, we prove that 2-solitary waves with same sign do not exist. Second, we construct and classify the full family of 2-solitary waves in the case of opposite signs. Close to the sum of two remote solitary waves, it turns out that only the components of the initial data in the unstable direction of each ground state are relevant in the large time asymptotic behavior of the solution. In particular, we show that $2$-solitary waves have a universal behavior: the distance between the solitary waves is asymptotic to $\log t$ as $t\to \infty$. This behavior is due to damping of the initial data combined with strong interactions between the solitary waves.
We study the nonrelativistic limit of solitary waves from Nonlinear Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations (NMKG) to Nonlinear Schrodinger-Poisson equations (NSP). It is known that the existence or multiplicity of positive solutions depends on the choices of parameters the equations contain. In this paper, we prove that for a given positive solitary wave of NSP, which is found in Ruiz's work \cite{R}, there corresponds a family of positive solitary waves of NMKG under the nonrelativistic limit. Notably, our results contain a new result of existence of positive solutions to (NMKG) with lower order nonl…
We study the perturbed sine-Gordon equation $θ_{tt}-θ_{xx}+\sin θ= F(\varepsilon,x)$, where we assume that the perturbation $F$ is analytic in $\varepsilon$ and that its derivatives with respect to $\varepsilon$ satisfy certain bounds at $\varepsilon=0$. We construct implicitly an, adjusted to the perturbation $F$, virtual solitary manifold, which is invariant in the following sense: The initial value problem for the perturbed sine-Gordon equation with an appropriate initial state on the constructed manifold has a unique solution, which follows a trajectory on the virtual solitary manifold. Th…
We study the perturbed sine-Gordon equation $θ_{tt}-θ_{xx}+\sin θ= F(\varepsilon,x)$, where $F$ is of differentiability class $C^n$ in $\varepsilon$ and the first $k$ derivatives vanish at $0$, i.e., $\partial_\varepsilon^l F(0,\cdot)=0$ for $0\le l\le k $. We construct implicitly a virtual solitary manifold by deformation of the classical solitary manifold in $n$ iteration steps. Our main result establishes that the initial value problem with an appropriate initial state $\varepsilon^n$-close to the virtual solitary manifold has a unique solution which follows up to time $1/(\tilde C\varepsil…
The global attraction is proved for the nonlinear 3D Klein-Gordon equation with a nonlinearity concentrated at one point. Our main result is the convergence of each "finite energy solution" to the manifold of all solitary waves as $t\to\pm\infty$. This global attraction is caused by the nonlinear energy transfer from lower harmonics to the continuous spectrum and subsequent dispersion radiation. We justify this mechanism by the following strategy based on inflation of spectrum by the nonlinearity. We show that any omega-limit trajectory has the time-spectrum in the spectral gap $[-m,m]$ and sa…
We obtain explicit characterization of spectral and orbital stability of solitary wave solutions to the $\mathbf{U}(1)$-invariant Klein--Gordon equation in one spatial dimension coupled to an anharmonic oscillator. We also give the complete analysis of the spectrum of the linearization at a solitary wave.
We derive a uniform exponential decay of the total energy for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a damping around spatial infinity in the whole space or in the exterior of a star shaped obstacle.
Roughly speaking a solitary wave is a solution of a field equation whose energy travels as a localized packet and which preserves this localization in time. A solitary wave which has a non-vanishing angular momentum is called vortex. We know (at least) three mechanisms which might produce solitary waves and vortices: 1) Complete integrability, (e.g. Kortewg-de Vries equation) 2) Topological constraints, (e.g. Sine-Gordon equation); 3) Ratio energy/charge: (e.g. the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation). The third type of solitary waves or solitons will be called hylomorphic. This class includes the…

In this paper we show the existence of a solution $u(t)$ of the equation such that \begin{equation*} \normo{u(t) - \sum_{k=1,2}Q_k(t)} + \normt{\partial_t u(t)} \to 0\quad \mbox{as $t\t…
We consider the strongly damped Klein Gordon equation for defocusing nonlinearity and we study the asymptotic behaviour of the energy for periodic solutions. We prove first the exponential decay to zero for zero mean solutions. Then, we characterize the limit of the energy, when the time tends to infinity, for solutions with small enough initial data and we finally prove that such limit is not necessary zero.
In this paper, we proved that if the solution to damped focusing Klein-Gordon equations is global forward in time, then it will decouple into a finite number of equilibrium points with different shifts from the origin. The core ingredient of our proof is the existence of the "concentration-compact attractor" which yields a finite number of profiles. Using damping effect, we can prove all the profiles are equilibrium points.
We study the decay of the global energy for the damped Klein-Gordon equation on non-compact manifolds with finitely many cylindrical and subconic ends up to bounded perturbation. We prove that under the Geometric Control Condition, the decay is exponential, and that under the weaker Network Control Condition, the decay is logarithmic, by developing the global Carleman estimate with multiple weights.
We study the non relativistic and ultra relativistic limits in the two-dimensional nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation driven by a space-time white noise on the torus. In order to take the limits, it is crucial to clarify the parameter dependence in the estimates of solution. In this paper we present two methods to confirm this parameter dependence. One is the classical, simple energy method. Another is the method via Strichartz estimates.
We consider the Cauchy problem in the whole space for strongly damped Klein-Gordon equations. We derive asymptotic profles of solutions with weighted initial data by a simple method introduced by R. Ikehata. The obtained results show that the wave effect will be weak because of the mass term, especially in the low dimensional case (n = 1,2) as compared with the strongly damped wave equations without mass term (m = 0), so the most interesting topic in this paper is the n = 1,2 cases.
We continue our study of damped nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. In our previous work we considered fixed positive damping and proved a form of the soliton resolution conjecture for radial solutions. In contrast, here we consider damping which decreases in time to 0. In the class of radial data we again establish soliton resolution provided the damping goes to 0 sufficiently slowly. While our previous work relied on invariant manifold theory, here we use the Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality applied to a suitable Lyapunov functional.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for linear dissipative generalized Klein-Gordon equations with nonlinear memory in the right hand side. Our goal is to study the effect of this nonlinearity on both the decay estimates of global solutions as well as the admissible range of the exponent p.
The long-time asymptotics is analyzed for all finite energy solutions to a model U(1)-invariant nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in one dimension, with the nonlinearity concentrated at a point. Our main result is that each finite energy solution converges as $t\to\pm\infty$ to the set of ``nonlinear eigenfunctions'' $ψ(x)e\sp{-iωt}$.
For the one-dimensional nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation \[ \partial_{t}^{2}u+2α\partial_{t}u-\partial_{x}^{2}u+u-|u|^{p-1}u=0 \quad \mbox{on $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}$,}\] with $α>0$ and $p>2$, we prove that any global finite energy solution either converges to $0$ or behaves asymptotically as $t\to \infty$ as the sum of $K\geq 1$ decoupled solitary waves. In the multi-soliton case $K\geq 2$, the solitary waves have alternate signs and their distances are of order $\log t$.
We construct bi-frequency solitary waves of the nonlinear Dirac equation with the scalar self-interaction (the Soler model) and the Dirac--Klein--Gordon with Yukawa self-interaction. These solitary waves provide a natural implementation of qubit and qudit states in the theory of quantum computing. We show the relation of $\pm 2ω\mathrm{i}$ eigenvalues of the linearization at a solitary wave, Bogoliubov $\mathbf{SU}(1,1)$ symmetry, and the existence of bi-frequency solitary waves. We show that the spectral stability of these waves reduces to spectral stability of usual (one-frequency) solitary …
We consider the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in $\R^d$. We call multi-solitary waves a solution behaving at large time as a sum of boosted standing waves. Our main result is the existence of such multi-solitary waves, provided the composing boosted standing waves are stable. It is obtained by solving the equation backward in time around a sequence of approximate multi-solitary waves and showing convergence to a solution with the desired property. The main ingredients of the proof are finite speed of propagation, variational characterizations of the profiles, modulation theory and energy est…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic dynamics of global solutions to damped Klein-Gordon equations in inhomogeneous mediums (KGI). In the defocusing case, we prove for any initial data, the solution is globally define in forward time and it will converge to an equilibrium. In the focusing case, for global solutions, we prove the solutions converge to the superposition of equilibriums among which there exists at most one equilibrium to KGI and the other equilibriums are solutions to stationary nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. The core ingredients of our proof are the existence of the "concen…
The global attraction is established for all finite energy solutions to a model $\mathbf{U}(1)$-invariant nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in one dimension coupled to a finite number of nonlinear oscillators: We prove that {\it each finite energy solution} converges as $t\to\pm\infty$ to the set of all ``nonlinear eigenfunctions'' of the form $ϕ(x)e\sp{-iωt}$ if all oscillators are strictly nonlinear, and the distances between all neighboring oscillators are sufficiently small. The {\it global attraction} is caused by the nonlinear energy transfer from lower harmonics to the continuous spectrum…
We review recent results on global attractors of U(1)-invariant dispersive Hamiltonian systems. We study several models based on the Klein-Gordon equation and sketch the proof that in these models, under certain generic assumptions, the weak global attractor is represented by the set of all solitary waves. In general, the attractors may also contain multifrequency solitary waves; we give examples of systems which contain such solutions.
We consider the fractional Klein-Gordon equation in one spatial dimension, subjected to a damping coefficient, which is non-trivial and periodic, or more generally strictly positive on a periodic set. We show that the energy of the solution decays at the polynomial rate $O(t^{-\frac{s}{4-2s}})$ for $0< s<2 $ and at some exponential rate when $s\geq 2$. Our approach is based on the asymptotic theory of $C_0$ semigroups in which one can relate the decay rate of the energy in terms of the resolvent growth of the semigroup generator. The main technical result is a new observability estimate for th…
We consider the nonlinear damped Klein-Gordon equation \[ \partial_{tt}u+2α\partial_{t}u-Δu+u-|u|^{p-1}u=0 \quad \text{on} \ \ [0,\infty)\times \mathbb{R}^N \] with $α>0$, $2 \le N\le 5$ and energy subcritical exponents $p>2$. We study the behavior of solutions for which it is supposed that only one nonlinear object appears asymptotically for large times, at least for a sequence of times. We first prove that the nonlinear object is necessarily a bound state. Next, we show that when the nonlinear object is a non-degenerate state or a degenerate excited state satisfying a simplicity condition, t…
This paper is devoted to prove the existence of solitons on lattices. We are interested in solitary waves and solitons whose existence is related to the ratio energy/charge. These solitary waves are called hylomorphic. This class includes the Q-balls, which are spherically symmetric solutions of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation, as well as solitary waves and vortices which occur, by the same mechanism, in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and in gauge theories. In this paper we prove an abstract existence theorem which applies to many situations already considered in the literature and al…
In this paper, we study the existence of positive solutions to the nonlinear elliptic system, which is derived from taking the nonrelativistic limit of the nonlinear Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations under the decomposition of waves functions into positron and electron parts. We characterize the existence and nonexistence of positive vector solutions, depending on parameters $p$ and $μ_{ij}$.

For the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in R 1+d , we prove the existence of multi-solitary waves made of any number N of decoupled bound states. This extends the work of C{ô}te and Mu{ñ}oz (Forum Math. Sigma 2 (2014)) which was restricted to ground states, as were most previous similar results for other nonlinear dispersive and wave models.
We consider finite energy solutions to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation and find the condition on the nonlinearity so that the standard, one-frequency solitary waves are the only solutions with compact spectrum. We also construct an example of a four-frequency solitary wave solution to the nonlinear Dirac equation in three dimensions.
In this paper we study the existence of radially symmetric solitary waves in R^N for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations coupled with the Maxwell's equations when the nonlinearity exhibits critical growth. The main feature of this kind of problem is the lack of compactness arising in connection with the use of variational methods.
For general nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations with dissipation we show that any finite energy radial solution either blows up in finite time or asymptotically approaches a stationary solution in $H^1\times L^2$. In particular, any global solution is bounded. The result applies to standard energy subcritical focusing nonlinearities $|u|^{p-1} u$, $1\textless{}p\textless{}(d+2)/(d-2)$ as well as any energy subcritical nonlinearity obeying a sign condition of the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type. The argument involves both techniques from nonlinear dispersive PDEs and dynamical systems (invariant manifo…
This paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic dynamics of the stochastic damped sine-Gordon equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. It is shown that for any positive damping and diffusion coefficients, the equation possesses a random attractor, and when the damping and diffusion coefficients are sufficiently large, the random attractor is a one-dimensional random horizontal curve regardless of the strength of noise. Hence its dynamics is not chaotic. It is also shown that the equation has a rotation number provided that the damping and diffusion coefficients are sufficient…
Global behavior of solutions is studied for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a focusing power nonlinearity and a damping term in the energy space on the Euclidean space. We give a complete classification of solutions into 5 types of global behavior for all initial data in a small neighborhood of each superposition of two ground states (2-solitons) with the opposite signs and sufficient spatial distance. The neighborhood contains, for each sign of the ground state, the manifold with codimension one in the energy space, consisting of solutions that converge to the ground state at time in…
Roughly speaking a solitary wave is a solution of a field equation whose energy travels as a localised packet and which preserves this localisation in time. A soliton is a solitary wave which exhibits some strong form of stability so that it has a particle-like behaviour. In this paper we show a new mechanism which might produce solitary waves and solitons for a large class of equations, such as the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. We show that the existence of these kind of solitons, that we have called \emph{hylomorphic} solitons, depends on a suitable energy/charge ratio. We show a variatio…
We establish the long time soliton asymptotics for the translation invariant nonlinear system consisting of the Klein-Gordon equation coupled to a charged relativistic particle. The coupled system has a six dimensional invariant manifold of the soliton solutions. We show that in the large time approximation any finite energy solution, with the initial state close to the solitary manifold, is a sum of a soliton and a dispersive wave which is a solution of the free Klein-Gordon equation. It is assumed that the charge density satisfies the Wiener condition which is a version of the ``Fermi Golden…
We consider a non-Abelian gauge theory in R^{4} equipped with the Minkowski metric, which provides a model for the interaction between a bosonic matter field and a gauge field with gauge group SU(2). We prove the existence of solitary waves which are related to those found for the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell equations.
We construct center-stable and center-unstable manifolds, as well as stable and unstable manifolds, for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a focusing energy sub-critical nonlinearity, associated with a family of solitary waves which is generated from any radial stationary solution by the action of all Lorentz transforms and spatial translations. The construction is based on the graph transform (or Hadamard) approach, which requires less spectral information on the linearized operator, and less decay of the nonlinearity, than the Lyapunov-Perron method employed previously in this context.…
We prove the existence of infinitely many solitary waves for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon or Schrödinger equation $$ Δu-u+ u^3 =0 , $$ in ${\bf R}^2$, which have finite energy and whose maximal group of symmetry reduces to the identity.
We prove that finite energy solutions to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation which have the compact time spectrum have to be one-frequency solitary waves. The argument is based on the generalization of the Titchmarsh convolution theorem to partial convolutions.
We consider dispersion generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) of the form $i \partial_t u = P(D) u - |u|^{2 σ} u$, where $P(D)$ denotes a (pseudo)-differential operator of arbitrary order. As a main result, we prove symmetry results for traveling solitary waves in the case of powers $σ\in \mathbb{N}$. The arguments are based on Steiner type rearrangements in Fourier space. Our results apply to a broad class of NLS-type equations such as fourth-order (biharmonic) NLS, fractional NLS, square-root Klein-Gordon and half-wave equations.
In this paper we study existence and orbital stability for solitary waves of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. The energy of these solutions travels as a localized packet, hence they are a particular type of solitons. In particular we are interested in sufficient conditions on the potential for the existence of solitons. Our proof is based on the study of the ratio energy/charge of a function, which turns out to be a useful approach for many field equations.
This paper is devoted to the study of solitary waves and solitons whose existence is related to the ratio energy/charge. These solitary waves are called hylomorphic. This class includes the Q-balls, which are spherically symmetric solutions of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation (NKG), as well as solitary waves and vortices which occur, by the same mechanism, in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and in gauge theories. This paper is devoted to the study of hylomorphic soliton. Mainly we will be interested in the very general principles which are at the base of their existence such as the Vari…
