We consider dispersion generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) of the form $i \partial_t u = P(D) u - |u|^{2 σ} u$, where $P(D)$ denotes a (pseudo)-differential operator of arbitrary order. As a main result, we prove symmetry results for traveling solitary waves in the case of powers $σ\in \mathbb{N}$. The arguments are based on Steiner type rearrangements in Fourier space. Our results apply to a broad class of NLS-type equations such as fourth-order (biharmonic) NLS, fractional NLS, square-root Klein-Gordon and half-wave equations.
We study the motion of solitary-wave solutions of a family of focusing generalized nonlinear Schroedinger equations with a confining, slowly varying external potential, $V(x)$. A Lyapunov-Schmidt decomposition of the solution combined with energy estimates allows us to control the motion of the solitary wave over a long, but finite, time interval. We show that the center of mass of the solitary wave follows a trajectory close to that of a Newtonian point particle in the external potential $V(x)$ over a long time interval.
Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations with focusing power nonlinearities have solitary wave solutions. The spectra of the linearized operators around these solitary waves are intimately connected to stability properties of the solitary waves, and to the long-time dynamics of solutions of (NLS). We study these spectra in detail, both analytically and numerically.
We consider nonlinear half-wave equations with focusing power-type nonlinearity $$ i \pt_t u = \sqrt{-Δ} \, u - |u|^{p-1} u, \quad \mbox{with $(t,x) \in \R \times \R^d$} $$ with exponents $1 < p < \infty$ for $d=1$ and $1 < p < (d+1)/(d-1)$ for $d \geq 2$. We study traveling solitary waves of the form $$ u(t,x) = e^{iωt} Q_v(x-vt) $$ with frequency $ω\in \R$, velocity $v \in \R^d$, and some finite-energy profile $Q_v \in H^{1/2}(\R^d)$, $Q_v \not \equiv 0$. We prove that traveling solitary waves for speeds $|v| \geq 1$ do not exist. Furthermore, we generalize the non-existence result to the sq…
For the focusing mass-critical NLS $iu_t+Δu=-|u|^{\frac 4d}u$, it is conjectured that the only global non-scattering solution with ground state mass must be a solitary wave up to symmetries of the equation. In this paper, we settle the conjecture for $H^1_x$ initial data in dimensions $d=2,3$ with spherical symmetry and $d\ge 4$ with certain splitting-spherically symmetric initial data.
We consider the initial-value problem for the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the presence of an attractive delta potential. We show that for sufficiently small initial data, the corresponding global solution decomposes into a small solitary wave plus a radiation term that decays and scatters as $t\to\infty$. In particular, we establish the asymptotic stability of the family of small solitary waves.
Local exact controllability of the 1D NLS (subject to zero boundary conditions) with distributed control is shown to hold in a $H^1$--neighbourhood of the nonlinear ground state. The Hilbert Uniqueness Method (HUM), due to J.-L. Lions, is applied to the linear control problem that arises by linearization around the ground state. The application of HUM crucially depends on the spectral properties of the linearized NLS operator which are given in detail.
This paper proves existence and stability results of solitary-wave solutions to coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with power-type nonlinearities arising in several models of modern physics. The existence of solitary waves is obtained by solving a variational problem subject to two independent constraints and using the concentration-compactness method. The set of minimizers is shown to be stable and further information about the structures of this set are given. The paper extends the results previously obtained by Cipolatti and Zumpichiatti, Nguyen and Wang, and Ohta.
In this paper, we study a compound Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation with a higher-order nonlinearity. A class of solitary wave solutions is obtained by means of a series expansion.
We prove existence and stability results for a two-parameter family of solitary-wave solutions to a system in which an equation of nonlinear Schrödinger type is coupled to an equation of Korteweg-de Vries type. Such systems model interactions between short and long dispersive waves. The results extend earlier results of Angulo, Albert and Angulo, and Chen. Our proof involves the characterization of solitary-wave solutions as minimizers of an energy functional subject to two constraints. To establish the precompactness of minimizing sequences via concentrated compactness, we establish the sub-a…
A nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with dispersion averaged nonlinearity of saturated type is considered. Such a nonlocal NLS is of integro-differential type and it arises naturally in modeling fiber-optics communication systems with periodically varying dispersion profile (dispersion management). The associated constrained variational principle is shown to posses a ground state solution by constructing a convergent minimizing sequence through the application of a method similar to the classical concentration compactness principle of Lions. One of the obstacles in applying this variational…
The focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation possesses special non-dispersive solitary type solutions, solitons. Under certain spectral assumptions we show existence and asymptotic stability of solutions with the asymptoic profile (as time goes to infinity) of a linear combination of N non-colliding solitons.
We consider a perturbed energy critical focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation in three dimensions. We construct solitary wave solutions for focusing subcritical perturbations as well as defocusing supercritical perturbations. The construction relies on the resolvent expansion, which is singular due to the presence of a resonance. Specializing to pure power focusing subcritical perturbations we demonstrate, via variational arguments, and for a certain range of powers, the existence of a ground state solitary wave, which is then shown to be the previously constructed solution. Finally, we pres…
We construct in this paper global (for $t \geq 0$) and bounded solutions $u(t)$ for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[i \partial_t u + Δu + |u|^{p-1} u = 0, \quad t \in \mathbb{R}, x \in \mathbb{R}^d\] in mass sub-critical cases ($1 < p < 1 + \frac{4}{d}$) and mass super-critical ($1 + \frac{4}{d} < p < \frac{d+2}{d-2}$) such that $u(t)$ decomposes asymptotically into two solitary waves with logarithmic distance \[ \|u(t) - e^{i γ(t)} \sum_{k=1}^2 Q(\cdot - x_k(t))\|_{H^1} \to 0 \] and \[|x_1(t) - x_2(t)| \sim 2 \log t, \quad \mbox{as}t \to + \infty.\] The logarithmic distance is related to…
We construct a new class of multi-solitary wave solutions for the mass critical two dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). Given any integer K>1, there exists a global (for positive time) solution of (NLS) that decomposes asymptotically into a sum of solitary waves centered at the vertices of a K-sided regular polygon and concentrating at a logarithmic rate in large time. This solution blows up in infinite time with logarithmic rate. Using the pseudo-conformal transform, this yields the first example of solution blowing up in finite time with a rate strictly above the pseudo-conform…
Of concern are traveling wave solutions for the fractional Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (fKP) equation. The existence of periodically modulated solitary wave solutions is proved by dimension breaking bifurcation. Moreover, the line solitary wave solutions and their transverse (in)stability are discussed. Analogous to the classical Kadmomtsev--Petviashvili (KP) equation, the fKP equation comes in two versions: fKP-I and fKP-II. We show that the line solitary waves of fKP-I equation are transversely linearly instable. We also perform numerical experiments to observe the (in)stability dynamics of line…
We consider the quartic focusing Half Wave equation (HW) in one space dimension. We show first that that there exist traveling wave solutions with arbitrary small $H^{\frac 12}(\R)$ norm. This fact shows that small data scattering is not possible for (HW) equation and that below the ground state energy there are solutions whose energy travels as a localised packet and which preserve this localisation in time. This behaviour for (HW) is in sharp contrast with classical NLS in any dimension and with fractional NLS with radial data. The second result addressed is the non existence of traveling wa…
We construct small-amplitude solitary traveling gravity-capillary water waves with a finite number of point vortices along a vertical line, on finite depth. This is done using a local bifurcation argument. The properties of the resulting waves are also examined: We find that they depend significantly on the position of the point vortices in the water column.
We study a system of differential equation simulating transport phenomena in active structured media. The model is a generalization of the McKean s modification of the celebrated FitzHugh--Nagumo system, describing the nerve impulse propagation in axon. It takes into account the effects of memory, connected with the presence of internal structure. We construct explicitly the localized traveling wave solutions and analyze their stability.
We study the existence of solitary waves in a diatomic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) lattice. For monatomic FPUT the traveling wave equations are a regular perturbation of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation's but, surprisingly, we find that for the diatomic lattice the traveling wave equations are a singular perturbation of KdV's. Using a method first developed by Beale to study traveling solutions for capillary-gravity waves we demonstrate that for wave speeds in slight excess of the lattice's speed of sound there exists nontrivial traveling wave solutions which are the superposition an e…
We review some recent results concerning Gibbs measures for nonlinear Schroedinger equations (NLS), with implications for the theory of the NLS, including stability and typicality of solitary wave structures. In particular, we discuss the Gibbs measures of the discrete NLS in three dimensions, where there is a striking phase transition to soliton-like behavior.
This paper is concerned with decay and symmetry properties of solitary wave solutions to a nonlocal shallow water wave model. It is shown that all supercritical solitary wave solutions are symmetric and monotone on either side of the crest. The proof is based on a priori decay estimates and the method of moving planes. Furthermore, a close relation between symmetric and traveling wave solutions is established.
We study traveling wave solutions of an equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude arising as a shallow water approximation of the Euler equations for inviscid, incompressible and homogenous fluids. We obtain solitary waves of elevation and depression, including a family of solitary waves with compact support, where the amplitude may increase or decrease with respect to the wave speed. Our approach is based on techniques from dynamical systems and relies on a reformulation of the evolution equation as an autonomous Hamiltonian system which facilitates an explicit expression for bounded o…
The paper studies asymptotics of moving gap solitons in nonlinear periodic structures of finite contrast ("deep grating") within the one dimensional periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (PNLS). Periodic structures described by a finite band potential feature transversal crossings of band functions in the linear band structure and a periodic perturbation of the potential yields new small gaps. Novel gap solitons with O(1) velocity despite the deep grating are presented in these gaps. An approximation of gap solitons is given by slowly varying envelopes which satisfy a system of generalized C…
We prove the instability of a ``critical'' solitary wave of the generalized Korteweg -- de Vries equation, the one with the speed at the border between the stability and instability regions. The instability mechanism involved is ``purely nonlinear'', in the sense that the linearization at a critical soliton does not have eigenvalues with positive real part. We prove that critical solitons correspond generally to the saddle-node bifurcation of two branches of solitons.
In this paper we present a rigorous modulational stability theory for periodic traveling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type. We first argue that, for Hamiltonian dispersive equations with a non-singular symplectic form and $d$ conserved quantities (in addition to the Hamiltonian), one expects that generically ${\mathcal L}$, the linearization around a periodic traveling wave, will have a $2d$ dimensional generalized kernel, with a particular Jordan structure: The kernel of ${\mathcal L}$ is expected to be $d$ dimensional, the first generalized kernel is expected to…
In this paper, we characterize a family of solitary waves for NLS with derivative (DNLS) by the structue analysis and the variational argument. Since (DNLS) doesn't enjoy the Galilean invariance any more, the structure analysis here is closely related with the nontrivial momentum and shows the equivalence of nontrivial solutions between the quasilinear and the semilinear equations. Firstly, for the subcritical parameters $4ω>c^2$ and the critical parameters $4ω=c^2, c>0$, we show the existence and uniqueness of the solitary waves for (DNLS), up to the phase rotation and spatial translation sym…
We consider the existence of spatially localized traveling wave solutions of the mass-in-mass lattice. Under an anti-resonance condition first discovered by Kevrekidis, Stefanov and Xu, we prove that such solutions exist in two distinguished limits, the first where the mass of the internal resonator is small and the second where the internal spring is very stiff. We then numerically simulate the solutions and these simulations indicate that the anti-resonant traveling waves are weakly unstable
We analyze the stationary and traveling wave solutions to a family of degenerate dispersive equations of KdV and NLS-type. In stark contrast to the standard soliton solutions for non-degenerate KdV and NLS equations, the degeneracy of the elliptic operators studied here allows for compactly supported steady or traveling states. As we work in $1$ dimension, ODE methods apply, however the models considered have formally conserved Hamiltonian, Mass and Momentum functionals, which allow for variational analysis as well.
We study the influence of Szeg{ö} projector $Π$ on the L 2 --critical one-dimensional non linear focusing Schr{ö}dinger equation, leading to the quintic focusing NLS-Szeg{ö} equation i$\partial$ t u + $\partial$ 2 x u + $Π$(|u| 4 u) = 0, (t, x) $\in$ R x R, u(0, $\times$) = u 0. This equation is globally well-posed in H 1 + = $Π$(H 1 (R)), for every initial datum u 0. The solution L 2-scatters both forward and backward in time if u 0 has sufficiently small mass. We prove the orbital stability with scaling of the traveling wave : u $ω$,c (t, x) = e i$ω$t Q(x + ct), for some $ω$, c > 0, where Q …
We consider periodic solutions to equations of Korteweg-Devries type. While the stability theory for periodic waves has received much some attention the theory is much less developed than the analogous theory for solitary wave stability, and appears to be mathematically richer. We prove an index theorem giving an exact count of the number of unstable eigenvalues of the linearized operator in terms of the number of zeros of the derivative of the traveling wave profile together with geometric information about a certain map between the constants of integration of the ordinary differential equati…
We consider asymptotic stability of a small solitary wave to supercritical 1-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations $$ iu_t+u_{xx}=Vu\pm |u|^{p-1}u \quad\text{for $(x,t)\in\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}$,}$$ in the energy class. This problem was studied by Gustafson-Nakanishi-Tsai \cite{GNT} in the 3-dimensional case using the endpoint Strichartz estimate. To prove asymptotic stability of solitary waves, we need to show that a dispersive part $v(t,x)$ of a solution belongs to $L^2_t(0,\infty;X)$ for some space $X$. In the 1-dimensional case, this property does not follow from the Strichartz e…
We investigate the multiplicity of nontrivial weak solutions for a class of complex equations. This class of problems are related with the existence of solitary waves for a nonlinear Schödinger equation. The main result is established by using minimax methods and Lusternik-Schnirelman theory of critical points.
We prove the existence of a new type of solutions to a nonlinear Schrödinger system. These solutions, which we call "multi-speeds solitary waves", are behaving at large time as a couple of scalar solitary waves traveling at different speeds. The proof relies on the construction of approximations of the multi-speeds solitary waves by solving the system backwards in time and using energy methods to obtain uniform estimates.
We use the vorticity transportation equation as the start point--with the help of stream function for two-dimensional planar incompressible flows--to obtain exact solutions that characterize evolution and dynamics of the flows. These traveling wave solutions, including both continuous and solitary waves, also recover the results existing in the theory of potential flows. We further analyze the flow patterns regarding symmetry solutions generated by Lie transformation groups. Some of the symmetry solutions have not been discussed in the current literature. They could display flow patterns very …
We establish soliton-like asymptotics for finite energy solutions to the Schrödinger equation coupled to a nonrelativistic classical particle. Any solution with initial state close to the solitary manifold, converges to a sum of traveling wave and outgoing free wave. The convergence holds in global energy norm. The proof uses spectral theory and the symplectic projection onto solitary manifold in the Hilbert phase space.
We propose higher-order approximation formulae recovering the surface elevation from the pressure at the bed and the background shear flow for small-amplitude Stokes and solitary water waves. They offer improvements over the pressure transfer function and the hydrostatic approximation. The formulae compare reasonably well with asymptotic approximations of the exact relation between the pressure at the bed and the surface wave in the zero vorticity case, but they incorporate the effects of vorticity through solutions of the Rayleigh equation. Several examples are discussed.
In this paper, we continue the study in \cite{MiaoTX:DNLS:Stab}. We use the perturbation argument, modulational analysis and the energy argument in \cite{MartelMT:Stab:gKdV, MartelMT:Stab:NLS} to show the stability of the sum of two solitary waves with weak interactions for the generalized derivative Schrödinger equation (gDNLS) in the energy space. Here (gDNLS) hasn't the Galilean transformation invariance, the pseudo-conformal invariance and the gauge transformation invariance, and the case $σ>1$ we considered corresponds to the $L^2$-supercritical case.
In this paper, we study the solitary wave and the Cauchy problem for Half-wave-Schrödinger equations in the plane. First, we show the existence and orbital stability of the ground states. Secondly, we prove that traveling waves exist and converge to zero as the velocity tends to $1$. Finally, we solve the Cauchy problem for initial data in $L^{2}_{x}H^{s}_{y}(\mathbb{R}^{2})$, with $s>\frac{1}{2}$.
The dynamics of single carrier wavepackets in nonlinear wave problems over periodic structures can be often formally approximated by the constant coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) as an effective model for the wavepacket envelope. We provide a detailed proof of this approximation result for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GP) and a semilinear wave equation, both with periodic coefficients in $\mathbb{N}\ni d$ spatial dimensions and with cubic nonlinearities. The proof is carried out in Bloch expansion variables with estimates in an $L^1$-type norm, which translates to an estimate…
In this paper we establish the nonlinear stability of solitary traveling-wave solutions for the Kawahara-KdV equation $$u_t+uu_x+u_{xxx}-γ_1 u_{xxxxx}=0,$$ and the modified Kawahara-KdV equation $$u_t+3u^2u_x+u_{xxx}-γ_2 u_{xxxxx}=0,$$ where $γ_i\in\mathbb{R}$ is a positive number when $i=1,2$. The main approach used to determine the stability of solitary traveling-waves will be the theory developed by Albert
We consider the nonlinear Dirac equation, also known as the Soler model: $i\p\sb tψ=-iα\cdot \nabla ψ+m βψ-f(ψ\sp\ast βψ) βψ$, $ψ(x,t)\in\mathbb{C}^{N}$, $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\le 3$, $f\in C\sp 2(\R)$, where $α_j$, $j = 1,...,n$, and $β$ are $N \times N$ Hermitian matrices which satisfy $α_j^2=β^2=I_N$, $α_j β+βα_j=0$, $α_j α_k + α_k α_j =2 δ_{jk} I_N$. We study the spectral stability of solitary wave solutions $ϕ(x)e^{-iωt}$. We study the point spectrum of linearizations at solitary waves that bifurcate from NLS solitary waves in the limit $ω\to m$, proving that if $k>2/n$, then one positive…
