This paper is devoted to the study of solitary waves and solitons whose existence is related to the ratio energy/charge. These solitary waves are called hylomorphic. This class includes the Q-balls, which are spherically symmetric solutions of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation (NKG), as well as solitary waves and vortices which occur, by the same mechanism, in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and in gauge theories. This paper is devoted to the study of hylomorphic soliton. Mainly we will be interested in the very general principles which are at the base of their existence such as the Variational Principle, the Invariance Principle, the Noether theorem, the Hamilton-Jacobi theory etc.
We give a general definition of hylomorphic solitons and an interpretation of their nature (swarm interpretation) which is very helpful in understanding their behavior.
We apply these ideas to the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation (NS) and to the Nonlinear Klein-Gordon Equation (NKG) repectively.
In this paper we prove the existence of hylomorphic solitons in the generalized KdV equation. A soliton is called hylomorphic if it is a solitary wave whose stability is due to a particular relation between energy and another integral of motion which we call hylenic charge.
We present a simple model of interaction of the Maxwell equations with a matter field defined by the Klein-Gordon equation. A simple linear interaction and a nonlinear perurbation produce solutions of the equations containing hylomorphic solitons, namely stable, solitary waves whose existence is related to the ratio energy/charge. These solitons, at low energy, behave as poinwise charged particles in an electromagnetic field.
We consider the generalized Good-Boussinesq model in one dimension, with power nonlinearity and data in the energy space $H^1\times L^2$. This model has solitary waves with speeds $-1<c<1$. When $|c|$ approaches 1, Bona and Sachs showed orbital stability of such waves. It is well-known from a work of Liu that for small speeds solitary waves are unstable. In this paper we consider in more detail the long time behavior of zero speed solitary waves, or standing waves. By using virial identities, in the spirit of Kowalczyk, Martel and Muñoz, we construct and characterize a manifold of even-odd ini…
We show that solitary waves for the 2D Euler-Korteweg model for capillary fluids display nonlinear instability when subjected to transverse perturbations.
Solitary waves are localized gravity waves that preserve their consistency and henceforth their visibility through properties of nonlinear hydrodynamics. Solitary waves have finite amplitude and spread with constant speed and constant shape. In this paper, we have used Lie group of transformation method to solve (3 + 1)-dimensional KdV type equation. We have obtained the infinitesimal generators, commutator table of Lie algebra for the KdV type equation. We have achieved a number of exact solutions of KdV type equation in the explicit form through similarity reduction. All the reported results…
We consider the perturbed sine-Gordon equation $θ_{tt}-θ_{xx}+\sin θ= \varepsilon^2 f(\varepsilon x)$, where the external perturbation $\varepsilon^2 f(\varepsilon x)$ corresponds to a small, slowly varying electric field. We show that the initial value problem with an appropriate initial state close enough to the solitary manifold has a unique solution, which follows up to time $1/{\varepsilon}$ and errors of order $\varepsilon^{ 3/4}$ a trajectory on the solitary manifold. The trajectory on the solitary manifold is described by ODEs, which agree approximately up to errors of order $\varepsil…
We establish the nonlinear stability of solitary waves (solitons) and periodic traveling wave solutions (cnoidal waves) for a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation which includes a fifth order dispersive term. The traveling wave solutions which yield solitons for zero boundary conditions and wave-trains of cnoidal waves for nonzero boundary conditions are analyzed using stability theorems, which rely on the positivity properties of the Fourier transforms. We show that all families of solutions considered here are (orbitally) stable.
An exact solitary wave solution is presented for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation governing the propagation of pulses in optical fibers including the effects of second, third and fourth order dispersion. The stability of this soliton-like solution with sech2 shape is proven by the sign-definiteness of the operator and an integral of the Sobolev type. The main criteria governing the existence of such stable localized pulses propagating in optical fibers are also formulated. A unique feature of these soliton-like optical pulses propagating in a fiber with higher order dispersion is that their …
We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a large class of rotationally symmetric, noncompact manifolds. We prove the existence of a solitary wave by perturbing off the flat Euclidean case. Furthermore, we study the stability of the solitary wave under radial perturbations by analyzing spectral properties of the associated linearized operator. Finally, in the L2-critical case, by considering the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion (see also results of Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss), we provide numerical evidence showing that the introduction of a nontrivial geometry destabilizes the solit…
We study the effect of curvature and torsion on the solitons of the nonlinear Dirac equation considered on planar and space curves. Since the spin connection is zero for the curves considered here, the arc variable provides a natural setting to understand the role of curvature and then we can obtain the transformation for the 1+1 dimensional Dirac equation directly from the metric. Depending on the curvature, the soliton profile either narrows or expands. Our results may be applicable to yet-to-be-synthesized curved quasi-one dimensional Bose condensates.
Localized soliton-like solutions to a $(2+1)$-dimensional hydro-dynamical evolution equation are studied numerically. The equation is so-called Williams-Yamagata-Flierl equation, which governs geostrophic fluid in a certain parameter range. Although the equation does not have an integrable structure in the ordinary sense, we find there exist shape-keeping solutions with very long life in a special background flow and an initial condition. The stability of the localization at the fusion process of two soliton-like objects is also investigated. As for the indicator of the long-term stability of …
