In this paper, we present necessary and sufficient conditions to have global analytic hypoellipticity for a class of first-order operators defined on $\mathbb{T}^1 \times \mathbb{S}^3$. In the case of real-valued coefficients, we prove that an operator in this class is conjugated to a constant-coefficient operator satisfying a Diophantine condition, and that such conjugation preserves the global analytic hypoellipticity. In the case where the imaginary part of the coefficients is non-zero, we show that the operator is globally analytic hypoelliptic if the Nirenberg-Treves condition ($\mathcal{P}$) holds, in addition to a Diophantine condition.
The global and semi-global analytic hypoellipticity on the torus is proved for two classes of sums of squares operators, introduced in "Analytic Hypoellipticity for Sums of Squares and the Treves Conjecture" by P. Albano and A. Bove and M. Mughetti, and in "Analytic Hypoellipticity for Sums of Squares and the Treves Conjecture. II" by A. Bove and M. Mughetti, satisfying the Hörmander condition and which fail to be neither locally nor microlocally analytic hypoelliptic.
On $T \times G$, where $T$ is a compact real-analytic manifold and $G$ is a compact Lie group, we consider differential operators $P$ which are invariant by left translations on $G$ and are elliptic in $T$. Under a mild technical condition, we prove that global hypoellipticity of $P$ implies its global analytic-hypoellipticity (actually Gevrey of any order $s \geq 1$). We also study the connection between the latter property and the notion of global analytic (resp. Gevrey) solvability, but in a much more general setup.
We prove a couple of results concerning pseudodifferential perturbations of differential operators being sums of squares of vector fields and satisfying Hörmander's condition. The first is on the minimal Gevrey regularity: if a sum of squares with analytic coefficients is perturbed with a pseudodifferential operator of order strictly less than its subelliptic index it still has the Gevrey minimal regularity. We also prove a statement concerning real analytic hypoellipticity for the same type of pseudodifferential perturbations, provided the operator satisfies to some extra conditions (see Theo…
We consider a second order operator with analytic coefficients whose principal symbol vanishes exactly to order two on a symplectic real analytic manifold. We assume that the first (non degenerate) eigenvalue vanishes on a symplectic submanifold of the characteristic manifold. In the $C^\infty$ framework this situation would mean a loss of 3/2 derivatives. We prove that this operator is analytic hypoelliptic. The main tool is the FBI transform. A case in which $C^\infty$ hypoellipticity fails is also discussed.
Let $L_j = \partial_{t_j} + (a_j+ib_j)(t_j) \partial_x, \, j = 1, \dots, n,$ be a system of vector fields defined on the torus $\mathbb{T}_t^{n}\times\mathbb{T}_x^1$, where the coefficients $a_j$ and $b_j$ are real-valued functions belonging to the Gevrey class $G^s(\mathbb{T}^1)$, with $s>1$. In this paper we were able to characterize the global $s-$hypoellipticity of this system in terms of Diophantine approximations and the Nirenberg-Treves condition (P).
This note presents an investigation on the global hypoellipticity problem for Cauchy operators on $\mathbb{T}^{n+1}$ belonging to the class \linebreak $L = \prod_{j=1}^{m}\left(D_t + c_j(t) P_j(D_x)\right)$, where $P_j(D_x)$ is a pseudo-differential operator on $\mathbb{T}^n$ and $c_j = c_j(t)$, a smooth, complex valued function on $\mathbb{T}$. The main goal of this investigation consists in establishing connections between the global hypoellipticity of the operators $L$ and its normal form $L_0 = \prod_{j=1}^m \left( D_t + c_{0,j}P_j(D_x)\right)$. In order to do so, the problem is approached…
We prove that second order linear operators on $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$ of the form $L(x,y,D_x,D_y) = L_1(x,D_x) + g(x) L_2(y,D_y)$, where $L_1$ and $L_2$ satisfy Morimoto's super-logarithmic estimates and $g$ is smooth, nonnegative, and vanishes only at the origin in $\mathbb{R}^n$ (but to any arbitrary order) are hypoelliptic without loss of derivarives. We also show examples in which our hypotheses are necessary for hypoellipticity.
For each value of k, two complex vector fields satisfying the bracket condition are exhibited the sum of whose squares is hypoelliptic but not subelliptic - in fact the operator loses k-1 derivatives in Sobolev norms. In the Appendix it is proven that this operator is analytic hypoelliptic.
We consider an operator $ P $ which is a sum of squares of vector fields with analytic coefficients. The operator has a non-symplectic characteristic manifold, but the rank of the symplectic form $ σ$ is not constant on $ \Char P $. Moreover the Hamilton foliation of the non symplectic stratum of the Poisson-Treves stratification for $ P $ consists of closed curves in a ring-shaped open set around the origin. We prove that then $ P $ is analytic hypoelliptic on that open set. And we note explicitly that the local Gevrey hypoellipticity for $ P $ is $ G^{k+1} $ and that this is sharp.
We show that an obstruction of number-theoretical nature appears as a necessary condition for the global hypoellipticity of the pseudo-differential operator $L=D_t+(a+ib)(t)P(D_x)$ on $\mathbb{T}^1_t\times\mathbb{T}_x^{N}$. This condition is also sufficient when the symbol $p(ξ)$ of $P(D_x)$ has at most logarithmic growth. If $p(ξ)$ has super-logarithmic growth, we show that the global hypoellipticity of $L$ depends on the change of sign of certain interactions of the coefficients with the symbol $p(ξ).$ Moreover, the interplay between the order of vanishing of coefficients with the order of g…
We introduce a class of time-periodic Gelfand-Shilov spaces of functions on $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}^n$, where $\mathbb{T} \sim \mathbb{R} /2π\mathbb{Z}$ is the one-dimensional torus. We develop a Fourier analysis inspired by the characterization of the Gelfand-Shilov spaces in terms of the eigenfunction expansions given by a fixed normal, globally elliptic differential operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this setting, as an application, we characterize the global hypoellipticity for a class of linear differential evolution operators on $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}^n$.
The main goal of this paper is to address global hypoellipticity issues for the following class of operators: $L = D_t + C(t,x,D_x)$, where $(t,x) \in \mathbb{T} \times M$, $\mathbb{T}$ is the one-dimensional torus, $M$ is a closed manifold and $C(t,x,D_x)$ is a first order pseudo-differential operator on $M$, smoothly depending on the periodic variable $t$. In the case of separation of variables, namely, $C(t,x,D_x) = a(t)p(x,D_x)+ib(t)q(x,D_x)$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the global hypoellipticity of $L$. In particular, we show that, under suitable conditions, the famou…
We give a semiclassical analysis of a nonlinear eigenvalue problem arising from the study of the failure of analytic hypoellipticity and obtain a general family of hypoelliptic, but not analytic hypoelliptic operators.
The aim of this work is to develop a global calculus for pseudo-differential operators acting on suitable algebras of generalized functions. In particular, a condition of global hypoellipticity of the symbols gives a result of regularity for the corresponding pseudo-differential equations. This calculus and this frame are proposed as tools for the study in Colombeau algebras of partial differential equations globally defined on $\mathbb{R}^n$.
We consider Keldysh-type operators, $ P = x_1 D_{x_1}^2 + a (x) D_{x_1} + Q (x, D_{x'} ) $, $ x = ( x_1, x') $ with analytic coefficients, and with $ Q ( x, D_{x'} ) $ second order, principally real and elliptic in $ D_{x'} $ for $ x $ near zero. We show that if $ P u =f $, $ u \in C^\infty $, and $ f $ is analytic in a neighbourhood of $ 0 $ then $ u $ is analytic in a neighbourhood of $ 0 $. This is a consequence of a microlocal result valid for operators of any order with Lagrangian radial sets. Our result proves a generalized version of a conjecture made by the second author and Lebeau and…
We are concerned with the problem of real analytic regularity of the solutions of sums of squares with real analytic coefficients. Treves conjecture states that an operator of this type is analytic hypoelliptic if and only if all the strata in the Poisson-Treves stratification are symplectic. We produce a model operator, $ P_{1} $, having a single symplectic stratum and prove that it is Gevrey $ s_{0} $ hypoelliptic and not better. See Theorem \ref{th:1} for a definition of $ s_{0} $. We also show that this phenomenon has a microlocal character. We point out explicitly that this is a counterex…
In an interesting note, E.M. Stein observed some 20 years ago that while the Kohn Laplacian $\square_b$ on functions is neither locally solvable nor (analytic) hypoelliptic, the addition of a non-zero complex constant reversed these conclusions at least on the Heisenberg group, and Kwon reproved and generalized this result using the method of concatenations. Recently Hanges and Cordaro have studied this situation on the Heisenberg group in detail. Here we give a purely $L^2$ proof of Stein's result using the author's now classical construction of $(T^p)_ϕ= ϕT^p +...,$ where $T$ is the 'missing…
Using weak solutions to the conjugation equation, we define a fibered rotation vector for almost reducible quasi-periodic cocycles in $\mathbb{T}^{d} \times G$, $G$ a compact Lie group, over a Diophantine rotation. We then prove that if this rotation vector is Diophantine with respect to the rotation in $\mathbb{T}^{d}$, the cocycle is smoothly reducible, thus establishing a hypoellipticity property in the spirit of the Greenfield-Wallach conjecture in PDEs.
We examine the phenomenon of enhanced dissipation from the perspective of Hörmander's classical theory of second order hypoelliptic operators [31]. Consider a passive scalar in a shear flow, whose evolution is described by the advection-diffusion equation \[ \partial_t f + b(y) \partial_x f - νΔf = 0 \text{ on } \mathbb{T} \times (0,1) \times \mathbb{R}_+ \] with periodic, Dirichlet, or Neumann conditions in $y$. We demonstrate that decay is enhanced on the timescale $T \sim ν^{-(N+1)/(N+3)}$, where $N-1$ is the maximal order of vanishing of the derivative $b'(y)$ of the shear profile and $N=0…
We attach representations to non-symplectic stratum in the characteristic set of real vector fields. This leads to Schrodinger operators. The analysis of the solutions of these Schrodinger equations allows us to construct smooth, non-analytic solutions of the sub-elliptic operator formed by taking sums of squares of the real vector fields.
Motivated by the problems of analytic hypoellipticity, we show that a special family of compact non self-adjoint operators has a non-zero eigenvalue. We recover old results by Christ,Hanges, Himonas, Pham-The-Lai and Robert proved by using ordinary differential equations. We show our method applies to higher dimensional cases, giving in particular a new class of hypoelliptic but not analytic hypoelliptic operators.
A global real analytic regularity theorem for a quasilinear sum of squares of vector fields of Hormander rank 2 is given. A related local result for a special case was proved recently by the second author and L. Zanghirati in a paper titled "Local Real Analyticity of Solutions for sums of squares of non-linear vector fields".
We prove local real analytic hypoellipticity for a sum of squares of complex vector fields studied by J.J. Kohn in a paper to appear in the Annals of Mathematics entitled "Hypoellipticity and loss of derivatives". The operator exhibits a loss of many derivatives but is nonetheless hypoelliptic, and, using L2 methods, we prove analytic hypoellipticity.
The recent example of Hanges: $P = \partial_t^2 + t^2Δ_x + \partial^2_{θ(x)}$ in $R^3$ is analytic hypoelliptic in the sense of germs but not in the strong sense in any neighborhood of the origin. And its characteristic variety is non-symplectic. We give a purely $L^2,$ and hence quite flexible, proof of this result and generalizations, and link it to, and contrast it with, the celebrated Baouendi-Goulaouic operator. We point out that the results are consistent with the conjecture of Treves.
This article presents an investigation on the global hypoellipticity problem for systems belonging to the class $P = D_t + Q(t,D_x)$, where $Q(t,D_x)$ is a $m\times m$ matrix with entries $c_{j,k}(t)Q_{j,k}(D_x)$. The coefficients $c_{j,k}(t)$ are smooth, complex-valued functions on the torus $\mathbb{T} \simeq \mathbb{R}/2π\mathbb{Z}$ and $Q_{j,k}(D_x)$ are pseudo-differential operators on $ \mathbb{T}^n$. The approach consists in establishing conditions on the matrix symbol $Q(t,ξ)$ such that it can be transformed into a suitable triangular form $Λ(t,ξ) + \mathcal{N}(t,ξ)$, where $Λ(t,ξ)$ is…
For about twenty five years it was a kind of folk theorem that complex vector-fields defined on $Ω\times \mathbb R_t$ (with $Ω$ open set in $\mathbb R^n$) by $$ L_j = \frac{\partial}{\partial t_j} + i \frac {\partial ϕ}{\partial t_j}(\t) \frac{\partial}{\partial x}, j=1,..., n, \t\in Ω, x\in \mathbb R ,$$ with $ϕ$ analytic, were subelliptic as soon as they were hypoelliptic. This was the case when $n=1$ but in the case $n>1$, an inaccurate reading of the proof given by Maire (see also Trèves) of the hypoellipticity of such systems, under the condition that $ϕ$ does not admit any local maximum …
We analyze the decay and instant regularization properties of the evolution semigroups generated by two-dimensional drift-diffusion equations in which the scalar is advected by a shear flow and dissipated by full or partial diffusion. We consider both the space-periodic $\mathbb{T}^2$ setting and the case of a bounded channel $\mathbb{T}\times [0,1]$ with no-flux boundary conditions. In the infinite Péclet number limit (diffusivity $ν\to 0$), our work quantifies the enhanced dissipation effect due to the shear. We also obtain hypoelliptic regularization, showing that solutions are instantly Ge…
We show that all smooth solutions of model non-linear sums of squares of vector fields are locally real analytic. A global result for more general operators is presented in a paper by Makhlouf Derridj and the first author under the title "Global Analytic Hypoellipticity for a Class of Quasilinear Sums of Squares of Vector Fields".
I will give a discussion of the conditions involved in Treves' conjecture on analytic hypoellipticity. I will discuss some microlocally characteristic sets and introduce a topology of monotropic functionals as suitable for solving the conjecture. The pseudodifferential operator representation is inspired by Cousin.
The sharp Gevrey hypoellipticity is provided for the following generalization of the Métivier operator, "Non-hypoellipticité analytique pour $D_{x}^{2}+\left( x^{2} + y^{2}\right)D_{y}^{2}$" by G. Métivier, \begin{align*} D_{x}^{2}+\left(x^{2n+1}D_{y}\right)^{2}+\left(x^{n}y^{m}D_{y}\right)^{2}, \end{align*} in $Ω$ open neighborhood of the origin in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$, where $n$ and $m$ are positive integers.
In this paper we consider a class of hypoelliptic second-order partial differential operators $\mathcal{L}$ in divergence form on $\mathbb{R}^N$, arising from CR geometry and Lie group theory, and we prove the Strong and Weak Maximum Principles and the Harnack Inequality for $\mathcal{L}$. The involved operators are not assumed to belong to the Hörmander hypoellipticity class, nor to satisfy subelliptic estimates, nor Muckenhoupt-type estimates on the degeneracy of the second order part; indeed our results hold true in the infinitely-degenerate case and for operators which are not necessarily …
Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be compact Lie groups, $X_1 \in \mathfrak{g}_1$, $X_2 \in \mathfrak{g}_2$ and consider the operator \begin{equation*} L_{aq} = X_1 + a(x_1)X_2 + q(x_1,x_2), \end{equation*} where $a$ and $q$ are ultradifferentiable functions in the sense of Komatsu, and $a$ is real-valued. We characterize completely the global hypoellipticity and the global solvability of $L_{aq}$ in the sense of Komatsu. For this, we present a conjugation between $L_{aq}$ and a constant-coefficient operator that preserves these global properties in Komatsu classes. We also present examples of globally hypo…
We consider the linear second order PDO's $$ \mathscr{L} = \mathscr{L}_0 - \partial_t : = \sum_{i,j =1}^N \partial_{x_i}(a_{i,j} \partial_{x_j} ) - \sum_{j=i}^N b_j \partial_{x_j} - \partial _t,$$and assume that $\mathscr{L}_0$ has nonnegative characteristic form and satisfies the Ole\vınik--Radkevič rank hypoellipticity condition. These hypotheses allow the construction of Perron-Wiener solutions of the Dirichlet problems for $\mathscr{L}$ and $\mathscr{L}_0$ on bounded open subsets of $\mathbb R^{N+1}$ and of $\mathbb R^{N}$, respectively. Our main result is the following Tikhonov-type theor…
This article is concerned with quantitative unique continuation estimates for equations involving a "sum of squares" operator $\mathcal{L}$ on a compact manifold $\mathcal{M}$ assuming: $(i)$ the Chow-Rashevski-Hörmander condition ensuring the hypoellipticity of $\mathcal{L}$, and $(ii)$ the analyticity of $\mathcal{M}$ and the coefficients of $\mathcal{L}$. The first result is the tunneling estimate $\|φ\|_{L^2(ω)} \geq Ce^{- λ^{\frac{k}{2}}}$ for normalized eigenfunctions $φ$ of $\mathcal{L}$ from a nonempty open set $ω\subset \mathcal{M}$, where $k$ is the hypoellipticity index of $\mathcal…
Under this method second order \textbf{partial differential equations (PDE's)} can be reduce to first order PDE's, simplifying the Initial value problem \textbf{IVP} or Border value Problem \textbf{BVP} for most cases of second-order differential equation, letting easiest proofs for existence and uniqueness of the PVI and BVP problems.
In this paper, we study quantitative spatial analytic bounds and unique continuation inequalities of solutions for fractional heat equations with an analytic lower order term on the whole space. At first, we show that the solution has a uniform positive analytic radius for all time, and the solution enjoys a log-type ultra-analytic bound if the coefficient is ultra-analytic. Second, we prove a Hölder type interpolation inequality on a thick set, with an explicit dependence on the analytic radius of coefficient. Finally, by the telescoping series method, we establish an observability inequality…
In this paper, we establish separate necessary and sufficient John-Nirenberg (JN) type inequalities for functions in $Q_α^β(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ which imply Gagliardo-Nirenberg (GN) type inequalities in $Q_α(\mathbb{R}^{n}).$ Consequently, we obtain Trudinger-Moser type inequalities and Brezis-Gallouet-Wainger type inequalities in $Q_α(\mathbb{R}^{n}).$
Based on some elementary estimates for the space-time derivatives of the heat kernel, we use a bootstrapping approach to establish the optimal decay rates for the $L^q(\mathbb{R}^d)$ ($1\leq q\leq\infty$, $d\in\mathbb{N}$) norm of the space-time derivatives of solutions to the (modified) Patlak-Keller-Segel equations with initial data in $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$, which implies the joint space-time analyticity of solutions. When the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm of the initial datum is small, the upper bound for the decay estimates is global in time, which yields a lower bound on the growth rate of the r…
We consider the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in the upper half space $\mathbb H^3_+$ with periodic boundary conditions in the horizontal directions. We prove the inviscid limit holds in the topology $L^\infty([0, T]; L^2(\mathbb H^3_+))$ assuming the initial datum is analytic in the region $\{(x, y, z)\in\mathbb H^3_+: 0\le z\le 1+μ_0\}$ for some positive $μ_0$ and has Sobolev regularity in the complement.
