We prove local real analytic hypoellipticity for a sum of squares of complex vector fields studied by J.J. Kohn in a paper to appear in the Annals of Mathematics entitled "Hypoellipticity and loss of derivatives". The operator exhibits a loss of many derivatives but is nonetheless hypoelliptic, and, using L2 methods, we prove analytic hypoellipticity.
For each value of k, two complex vector fields satisfying the bracket condition are exhibited the sum of whose squares is hypoelliptic but not subelliptic - in fact the operator loses k-1 derivatives in Sobolev norms. In the Appendix it is proven that this operator is analytic hypoelliptic.
In this paper we prove local analytic hypoellipticity for a degenerate sum of squares of complex vector fields generalizing those of Kohn in "Hypoellipticity and Loss of Derivatives". Kohn's article is to appear in the Annals of Mathematics with an appendix by Derridj and Tartakoff proving local analyticity in that case. Here we consider vector fields corresponding to a CR manifold of finite type so there is a kind of double degeneracy, and prove local analyticity using our balanced localization of high derivatives in the "missing" direction T. In a forthcoming paper, Bove, Derridj, Kohn and T…
In 1981, Foias, Guillopé and Temam proved a priori estimates for arbitrary-order space derivatives of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. Such bounds are instructive in the numerical investigation of intermittency often observed in simulations, e.g., numerical study of vorticity moments by Donzis et al. (2013) revealed depletion of nonlinearity that may be responsible for smoothness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation. We employ an original method to derive analogous estimates for space derivatives of three-dimensional space-periodic weak solutions to the evolutionary equations of …
The propagation of analyticity for a solution u(t,x) to a nonlinear weakly hyperbolic equation of order m, means that if u, and its time derivatives up to the order m-1, are analytic in the space variables x at the initial time, then they remain analytic for any time. Here we prove that such a property holds for the solutions bounded in C-infinity of a special class of homogeneous equations in one space variable, with time dependent coefficient.
We prove analytic-type estimates in weighted Sobolev spaces on the eigenfunctions of a class of elliptic and nonlinear eigenvalue problems with singular potentials, which includes the Hartree-Fock equations. Going beyond classical results on the analyticity of the wavefunctions away from the nuclei, we prove weighted estimates locally at each singular point, with precise control of the derivatives of all orders. Our estimates have far-reaching consequences for the approximation of the eigenfunctions of the problems considered, and they can be used to prove a priori estimates on the numerical s…
In this paper, we prove that if $g(t)$ is a smooth, complete solution to the Ricci flow of uniformly bounded curvature on $M\times[0, Ω]$, then the correspondence $t\mapsto g(t)$ is real-analytic at each $t_0\in (0, Ω)$. The analyticity is a consequence of classical Bernstein-type estimates on the temporal and spatial derivatives of the curvature tensor, which we further use to show that, under the above global hypotheses, for any $x_0\in M$ and $t_0\in (0, Ω)$, there exist local coordinates $x = x^i$ on a neighborhood $U\subset M$ of $x_0$ in which the representation $g_{ij}(x, t)$ of the met…
In this paper, we investigate the pointwise time analyticity of three differential equations. They are the biharmonic heat equation, the heat equation with potentials and some nonlinear heat equations with power nonlinearity of order $p$. The potentials include all the nonnegative ones. For the first two equations, we prove if $u$ satisfies some growth conditions in $(x,t)\in \mathrm{M}\times [0,1]$, then $u$ is analytic in time $(0,1]$. Here $\mathrm{M}$ is $R^d$ or a complete noncompact manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below by a constant. Then we obtain a necessary and sufficient …
We consider an abstract wave equation with a propagation speed that depends only on time. We assume that the propagation speed is differentiable for positive times, continuous up to the origin, but with first derivative that is potentially singular at the origin. We examine the derivative loss of solutions, and in particular we investigate which conditions on the modulus of continuity and on the behavior of the derivative in the origin yield, respectively, no derivative loss, an arbitrarily small derivative loss, a finite derivative loss, or an infinite derivative loss. As expected, we obtain …
We study the pseudospectral properties of general pseudodifferential operators around a doubly characteristic point and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for semiclassical hypoelliptic a priori estimates with a big loss of derivatives to hold.
For a principal type pseudodifferential operator, we prove that condition (psi) implies local solvability with a loss of 3/2 derivatives. We use many elements of Dencker's paper on the proof of the Nirenberg-Treves conjecture and we provide some improvements of the key energy estimates which allows us to cut the loss of derivatives from 2 (Dencker's result) to 3/2 (the present paper). It is already known that condition (psi) does not imply local solvability with a loss of 1 derivative, so we have to content ourselves with a loss >1.
We consider an abstract wave equation with a propagation speed that depends only on time. We investigate well-posedness results with finite derivative loss in the case where the propagation speed is smooth for positive times, but potentially singular at the initial time. We prove that solutions exhibit a finite derivative loss under a family of conditions that involve the blow up rate of the first and second derivative of the propagation speed, in the spirit that the weaker is the requirement on the first derivative, the stronger is the requirement on the second derivative. Our family of condi…
In this note we prove a well-posedness result, without loss of derivatives, for strictly hyperbolic wave operators having coefficients which are Zygmund-continuous in the time variable and Lipschitz-continuous in the space variables. The proof is based on Tarama's idea of introducing a lower order corrector in the energy, in order to produce special algebraic cancellations when computing its time derivative, combined with paradifferential calculus with parameters, in order to handle the low regularity of the coefficients with respect to $x$.
In this paper we will study the Cauchy problem for strictly hyperbolic operators with low regularity coefficients in any space dimension $N\geq1$. We will suppose the coefficients to be log-Zygmund continuous in time and log-Lipschitz continuous in space. Paradifferential calculus with parameters will be the main tool to get energy estimates in Sobolev spaces and these estimates will present a time-dependent loss of derivatives.
We prove that second order linear operators on $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$ of the form $L(x,y,D_x,D_y) = L_1(x,D_x) + g(x) L_2(y,D_y)$, where $L_1$ and $L_2$ satisfy Morimoto's super-logarithmic estimates and $g$ is smooth, nonnegative, and vanishes only at the origin in $\mathbb{R}^n$ (but to any arbitrary order) are hypoelliptic without loss of derivarives. We also show examples in which our hypotheses are necessary for hypoellipticity.
We address the Mach limit problem for the Euler equations in an exterior domain with analytic boundary. We first prove the existence of tangential analytic vector fields for the exterior domain with constant analyticity radii, and introduce an analytic norm in which we distinguish derivatives taken from different directions. Then we prove the uniform boundedness of the solutions in the analytic space on a time interval independent of the Mach number, and Mach limit holds in the analytic norm. The results extends more generally to Gevrey initial data with convergence in a Gevrey norm.
In this paper we consider the Cauchy boundary value problem for the abstract Kirchhoff equation with a continuous nonlinearity m : [0,+\infty) --> [0,+\infty). It is well known that a local solution exists provided that the initial data are regular enough. The required regularity depends on the continuity modulus of m. In this paper we present some counterexamples in order to show that the regularity required in the existence results is sharp, at least if we want solutions with the same space regularity of initial data. In these examples we construct indeed local solutions which are regular at…
Symmetric hyperbolic systems and constantly hyperbolic systems with constant coefficients and a boundary condition which satisfies a weakened form of the Kreiss-Sakamoto condition are considered. A well-posedness result is established which generalizes a theorem by Chazarain and Piriou for scalar strictly hyperbolic equations and non-characteristic boundaries from 1972. The proof is based on an explicit solution of the boundary problem by means of the Fourier-Laplace transform. As long as the operator is symmetric, the boundary is allowed to be characteristic.
This paper aims to give a general (possibly compact or noncompact) analog of Strichartz inequalities with loss of derivatives, obtained by Burq, Gérard, and Tzvetkov [19] and Staffilani and Tataru [51]. Moreover we present a new approach, relying only on the heat semigroup in order to understand the analytic connexion between the heat semigroup and the unitary Schrödinger group (both related to a same self-adjoint operator). One of the novelty is to forget the endpoint $L^1-L^\infty$ dispersive estimates and to look for a weaker $H^1-BMO$ estimates (Hardy and BMO spaces both adapted to the hea…
We continue to study the local well-posedness for higher order Benjamin-Ono type equations, especially fourth order equations. The proof is based on the energy methods with correction terms. Although one of correction terms can eliminate the highest order derivative loss in the energy inequality, it may yield a lower order derivative loss than the worst term. In order to cancel this derivative loss, we define correction terms inductively.
For nonlinear dispersive systems, the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation can usually be derived as a formal approximation equation describing slow spatial and temporal modulations of the envelope of a spatially and temporally oscillating underlying carrier wave. Here, we justify the NLS approximation for a whole class of quasilinear dispersive systems, which also includes toy models for the waterwave problem. This is the first time that this is done for systems, where a quasilinear quadratic term is allowed to effectively lose more than one derivative. With effective loss we here mean the lo…

Loss function are an essential part in modern data-driven approach, such as bi-level training scheme and machine learnings. In this paper we propose a loss function consisting of a $r$-order (an)-isotropic total variation semi-norms $TV^r$, $r\in \mathbb{R}^+$, defined via the Riemann-Liouville (R-L) fractional derivative. We focus on studying key theoretical properties, such as the lower semi-continuity and compactness with respect to both the function and the order of derivative $r$, of such loss functions.
This paper can be considered as a sequel of [BS14] by Bernicot and Samoyeau, where the authors have proposed a general way of deriving Strichartz estimates for the Schr{ö}dinger equation from a dispersive property of the wave propagator. It goes through a reduction of H 1 -- BMO dispersive estimates for the Schr{ö}dinger propagator to L 2 -- L 2 microlocalized (in space and in frequency) dispersion inequalities for the wave operator. This paper aims to contribute in enlightening our comprehension of how dispersion for waves imply dispersion for the Schr{ö}dinger equation. More precisely, the h…
This paper concerns the reconstruction of an anisotropic conductivity tensor $γ$ from internal current densities of the form $J = γ\nabla u$, where $u$ solves a second-order elliptic equation $\nabla\cdot(γ\nabla u) = 0$ on a bounded domain $X$ with prescribed boundary conditions. A minimum number of such functionals equal to $n + 2$, where $n$ is the spatial dimension, is sufficient to guarantee a local reconstruction. We show that $γ$ can be uniquely reconstructed with a loss of one derivative compared to errors in the measurement of $J$. In the special case where $γ$ is scalar, it can be re…
In this paper we prove observability estimates for 1-dimensional wave equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients. For coefficients in the Zygmund class we prove a "classical" observability estimate, which extends the well-known observability results in the energy space for $BV$ regularity. When the coefficients are instead log-Lipschitz or log-Zygmund, we prove observability estimates "with loss of derivatives": in order to estimate the total energy of the solutions, we need measurements on some higher order Sobolev norms at the boundary. This last result represents the intermediate step betwee…
