The propagation of analyticity for a solution u(t,x) to a nonlinear weakly hyperbolic equation of order m, means that if u, and its time derivatives up to the order m-1, are analytic in the space variables x at the initial time, then they remain analytic for any time. Here we prove that such a property holds for the solutions bounded in C-infinity of a special class of homogeneous equations in one space variable, with time dependent coefficient.
We show that resonant states in scattering on asymptotically hyperbolic man-ifolds that are analytic near conformal infinity, have analytic radiation patterns at infinity. On even asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds we also show that smooth solutions of Vasy operators with analytic coefficients are also analytic. That answer a question of M.Zworski ([14] Conjecture 2). The proof is based on previous results of Baouendi-Goulaouic and Bolley-Camus-Hanouzet and for convenience of the reader we present an outline of the proof of the latter.
We study expansions near the boundary of solutions to the Dirichlet problem for minimal graphs in the hyperbolic space and prove the local convergence of such expansions if the boundary is locally analytic. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture by F.-H. Lin that the minimal graph is analytic up to the boundary if the boundary is analytic and the minimal graph is smooth up to the boundary.
Certain systems of inviscid fluid dynamics have the property that for solutions that are only slightly better than differentiable in Eulerian variables, the corresponding Lagrangian trajectories are analytic in time. We elucidate the mechanisms in fluid dynamics systems that give rise to this automatic Lagrangian analyticity, as well as mechanisms in some particular fluids systems which prevent it from occurring. We give a conceptual argument for a general fluids model which shows that the fulfillment of a basic set of criteria results in the analyticity of the trajectory maps in time. We then…
In this paper we study first order hyperbolic systems with multiple characteristics (weakly hyperbolic) and time-dependent analytic coefficients. The main question is when the Cauchy problem for such systems is well-posed in $C^{\infty}$ and in $\mathcal{D}'$. We prove that the analyticity of the coefficients combined with suitable hypotheses on the eigenvalues guarantee the $C^\infty$ well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem. This result is an extension to systems of the analogous results for scalar equations recently obtained by Jannelli and Taglialatela in \cite{JT} and by the aut…
In this work we consider the initial value problem for the generalized Benjamin equation \begin{equation}\label{Benj-IVP} \begin{cases} \partial_t u-l\mathcal{H} \partial_x^2u-\partial_x^3u+u^p\partial_xu = 0, \quad x,\; t\in \mathbb{R};\;\;,\; p\geq 1, \\ u(x,0) = u_0(x), \end{cases} \end{equation} where $u=u(x,t)$ is a real valued function, $0<l<1$ and $\mathcal{H}$ is the Hilbert transform. This model was introduced by T. B. Benjamin (J. Fluid Mech. 245 (1992) 401--411) and describes unidirectional propagation of long waves in a two-fluid system where the lower fluid with greater density is…
We consider a degenerate abstract wave equation with a time-dependent propagation speed. We investigate the influence of a strong dissipation, namely a friction term that depends on a power of the elastic operator. We discover a threshold effect. If the propagation speed is regular enough, then the damping prevails, and therefore the initial value problem is well-posed in Sobolev spaces. Solutions also exhibit a regularizing effect analogous to parabolic problems. As expected, the stronger is the damping, the lower is the required regularity. On the contrary, if the propagation speed is not re…
The optimal time for the controllability of linear hyperbolic systems in one dimensional space with one-side controls has been obtained recently for time-independent coefficients in our previous works. In this paper, we consider linear hyperbolic systems with time-varying zero-order terms. We show the possibility that the optimal time for the null-controllability becomes significantly larger than the one of the time-invariant setting even when the zero-order term is indefinitely differentiable. When the analyticity with respect to time is imposed for the zero-order term, we also establish that…
In this work we prove an FBI characterization for Gevrey vectors on hypo-analytic structures, and we analyze the main differences of Gevrey regularity and hypo-analyticity concerning the FBI transform. We end with an application of this characterization on a propagation of Gevrey singularities result, for solutions of the non-homogeneous system associated with the hypo-analytic structure, for analytic structures of tube type.
The behavior of sufficiently regular solutions to semilinear hyperbolic equations has attracted a great deal of attention in the past decades, concerning local/global existence, finite time blow-up, critical exponents, and propagation of singularities. Solutions of lower regularity may exhibit unexpected (anomalous) propagation of singularities. The purpose of this paper is to present various striking examples that seemingly have not been addressed in the literature so far. The key issue is the interpretation of the nonlinear operations.
In this paper, we analyse propagating fronts in the context of hyperbolic theories of dissipative processes. These can be considered as a natural alternative to the more classical parabolic models. Emphasis is given toward the numerical computation of the invasion velocity.
In this paper we continue the study of non-diagonalisable hyperbolic systems with variable multiplicity started by the authors in \cite{Garetto2018}. In the case of space dependent coefficients, we prove a representation formula for solutions that allows us to derive results of regularity and propagation of singularities.
In this note we investigate propagation of smallness properties for solutions to heat equations. We consider spectral projector estimates for the Laplace operator with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on a Riemanian manifold with or without boundary. We show that using the new approach for the propagation of smallness from Logunov-Malinnikova [7, 6, 8] allows to extend the spectral projector type estimates from Jerison-Lebeau [3] from localisation on open set to localisation on arbitrary sets of non zero Lebesgue measure; we can actually go beyond and consider sets of non vanishing d -…
We justify the WKB analysis for generalized nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations (NLS), including the hyperbolic NLS and the Davey-Stewartson II system. Since the leading order system in this analysis is not hyperbolic, we work with analytic regularity, with a radius of analyticity decaying with time, in order to obtain better energy estimates. This provides qualitative information regarding equations for which global well-posedness in Sobolev spaces is widely open.
This paper is devoted to confront two different approaches to the problem of dynam-ical perfect plasticity. Interpreting this model as a constrained boundary value Friedrichs' system enables one to derive admissible hyperbolic boundary conditions. Using variational methods, we show the well-posedness of this problem in a suitable weak measure theoretic setting. Thanks to the property of finite speed propagation, we establish a new regularity result for the solution in short time. Finally, we prove that this variational solution is actually a solution of the hyperbolic formulation in a suitable…
In this article, we investigate inverse source problems for a wide range of PDEs of parabolic and hyperbolic types as well as time-fractional evolution equations by partial interior observation. Restricting the source terms to the form of separated variables, we establish uniqueness results for simultaneously determining both temporal and spatial components without non-vanishing assumptions at $t=0$, which seems novel to the best of our knowledge. Remarkably, mostly we allow a rather flexible choice of the observation time not necessarily starting from $t=0$, which fits into various situations…
In this note we investigate local properties for microlocally symmetrizable hyperbolic systems with just time dependent coefficients. Thanks to Paley-Wiener theorem, we establish finite propagation speed by showing precise estimates on the evolution of the support of the solution in terms of suitable norms of the coefficients of the operator and of the symmetrizer. From this result, local existence and uniqueness follow by quite standard methods. Our argument relies on the use of Fourier transform, and it cannot be extended to operators whose coefficients depend also on the space variables. On…
In this paper, we consider the fractional Camassa-Holm equation modelling the propagation of small-but-finite amplitude long unidirectional waves in a nonlocally and nonlinearly elastic medium. First, we establish the local well-posedness in Besov space $B^{s_0}_{2,1}$ with $s_0=2ν-\frac 1 2$ for $ν>\frac 3 2 $ and $s_0=\frac 5 2$ for $1<ν\leq \frac 3 2 $. Then, with a given analytic initial data, we establish the analyticity of the solutions in both variables, globally in space and locally in time.
Given a Hilbert space, we investigate the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the wave equation for operators with discrete non-negative spectrum acting on it. We consider the cases when the time-dependent propagation speed is regular, Hölder, and distributional. We also consider cases when it it is strictly positive (strictly hyperbolic case) and when it is non-negative (weakly hyperbolic case). When the propagation speed is a distribution, we introduce the notion of "very weak solutions" to the Cauchy problem. We show that the Cauchy problem for the wave equation with the distributional…
