A bielliptic surface (or hyperelliptic surface) is a smooth surface with a numerically trivial canonical divisor such that the Albanese morphism is an elliptic fibration. In the first part of this paper, we study the structure of bielliptic surfaces over a field of characteristic different from $2$ and $3$, in order to prove the Shafarevich conjecture for bielliptic surfaces with rational points. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Shafarevich conjecture generally fails for bielliptic surfaces without rational points. In particular, this paper completes the study of the Shafarevich conjecture for minimal surfaces of Kodaira dimension $0$.
In the second part of this paper, we study a Néron model of a bielliptic surface. We establish the potential existence of a Néron model for a bielliptic surface when the residual characteristic is not equal to $2$ or $3$.
We prove that a twisted Enriques (respectively, untwisted bielliptic) surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic at least 3 (respectively, at least 5) has no non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partners.
We provide explicit generators for the torsion of the second cohomology of bielliptic surfaces, and we use this to study pullback map between Brauer group of a bielliptic surface and that of its canonical cover.
We study the nontrivial elements in the Brauer group of a bielliptic surface and show that they can be realized as Azumaya algebras with a simple structure at the generic point of the surface. We go on to study some properties of the noncommutative Picard scheme associated to such an Azumaya algebra.
In this note we contribute to the study of Seshadri constants on abelian and bielliptic surfaces. We specifically focus on bounds that hold on all such surfaces, depending only on the self-intersection of the ample line bundle under consideration. Our result improves previous bounds and it provides rational numbers as bounds, which are potential Seshadri constants.
We prove that the canonical cover of an Enriques surface does not admit non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partners. We also show that the canonical cover of a bielliptic surface has at most one non-isomorphic Fourier-Mukai partner. The first result is then applied to birational Hilbert schemes of points and the second to birational generalised Kummer varieties. An appendix establishes that there are no exceptional or spherical objects in the derived category of a bielliptic surface.
We describe the group of exact autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a bielliptic surface. We achieve this by studying its action on the numerical Grothendieck group of the surface.
In 1988 Serrano \cite{Ser}, using Reider's method, discovered a minimal bielliptic surface in $\PP^4$. Actually he showed that there is a unique family of such surfaces and that they have degree 10 and sectional genus 6. In this paper we describe, among other things, the geometry of the embedding of the minimal bielliptic surfaces. A consequence of this description will be the existence of smooth nonminimal bielliptic surfaces of degree 15 in $\PP^4$. We also explain how to construct the degree 15 surfaces with the help of the quadro-cubic Cremona transformation of $\PP^4$. Finally, we remark …
We study the Hodge structure of elliptic surfaces which are canonically defined from bielliptic curves of genus three. We prove that the period map for the second cohomology has one dimensional fibers, and the period map for the total cohomology is of degree twelve, and moreover, by adding the information of the Hodge structure of the canonical divisor, we prove a generic Torelli theorem for these elliptic surfaces. Finally, we give explicit examples of the pair of non-isomorphic elliptic surfaces which have the same Hodge structure on themselves and the same Hodge structure on their canonical…
In this note, we prove that the syzygy bundle $M_L$ is cohomologically stable with respect to $L$ for any ample and globally generated line bundle $L$ on an Enriques (resp. bielliptic) surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $\neq 2$ (resp. $\neq 2,3$). In particular our result on complex Enriques surfaces improves a result of Torres-López and Zamora by removing a condition on Clifford index. Together with the results of Camere and Caucci--Lahoz, it implies that $M_L$ is stable with respect to $L$ for an ample and globally generated line bundle $L$ on any smooth minimal co…
So far only six families of smooth irregular surfaces are known to exist in P^4 (up to pullbacks by suitable finite covers of P^4). These are the elliptic quintic scrolls, the minimal abelian and bielliptic surfaces (of degree 10), two different families of non-minimal abelian surfaces of degree 15, and one family of non-minimal bielliptic surfaces of degree 15. The main purpose of the paper is to describe the structure of the Hartshorne-Rao modules and the syzygies for each of these smooth irregular surfaces in P^4, providing at the same time a unified construction method (via syzygies) for t…
Bielliptic surfaces are the last family of Kodaira dimension zero algebraic surfaces without a classification result for the Chern characters of stable sheaves. We rectify this and prove such a classification using a combination of classical techniques, on the one hand, and derived category and Bridgeland stability techniques, on the other. Along the way, we prove the existence of projective coarse moduli spaces of objects in the derived category of a bielliptic surface that Bridgeland semistable with respect to a generic stability condition. By systematically studying the connection between B…
The union of two quintic elliptic scrolls in P^4 intersecting transversally along an elliptic normal quintic curve is a singular surface Z which behaves numerically like a bielliptic surface. In the appendix to the paper [W. Decker et al.: Syzygies of abelian and bielliptic surfaces in P^4, alg-geom/9606013] where the equations of this singular surface were computed, we proved that Z defines a smooth point in the appropriate Hilbert scheme and that Z cannot be smoothed in P^4. Here we consider the analogous situation in higher dimensional projective spaces P^{n-1}, where, to our surprise, the …
We construct two pencils of bielliptic curves of genus three and genus five. The first pencil is associated with a general abelian surface with a polarization of type $(1,2)$. The second pencil is related to the first by an unramified double cover, the Prym variety of which is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of a very general curve of genus two. Our results are obtained by analyzing suitable elliptic fibrations on the associated Kummer surfaces and rational double covers among them.
In this paper, we study punctured spheres in two dimensional ball quotient compactifications $(X, D)$. For example, we show that smooth toroidal compactifications of ball quotients cannot contain properly holomorphically embedded $3$-punctured spheres. We also use totally geodesic punctured spheres to prove ampleness of $K_X + αD$ for $α\in (\frac{1}{4}, 1)$, giving a sharp version of a theorem of the first author with G. Di Cerbo. Finally, we produce the first examples of bielliptic ball quotient compactifications modeled on the Gaussian integers.
We construct two infinite families of ball quotient compactifications birational to bielliptic surfaces. For each family, the volume spectrum of the associated noncompact finite volume ball quotient surfaces is the set of all positive integral multiples of $\frac{8}{3}π^{2}$, i.e., they attain all possible volumes of complex hyperbolic $2$-manifolds. The surfaces in one of the two families have all $2$-cusps, so that we can saturate the entire volume spectrum with $2$-cusped manifolds. Finally, we show that the associated neat lattices have infinite abelianization and finitely generated commut…
We study deformation theory of elliptic fibre bundles over curves in positive characteristics. As applications, we give examples of non-liftable elliptic surfaces in charactertic two and three, which answers a question of Katsura and Ueno. Also, we construct a class of elliptic fibrations, whose liftability is equivalent to a conjecture of F. Oort concerning the liftability of automorphisms of curves. Finally, we classify deformations of bielliptic surfaces.
Given an abelian surface $A$, defined over a discrete valuation field and having good reduction, does the attached Kummer surface $\mathrm{Km}(A)$ also have good reduction? In this paper we give an affirmative answer in the extreme case, that is, when the abelian surface has supersingular reduction in characteristic $2$.

We consider the reduction of Brauer classes on surfaces over number fields, with a view toward applications to rationality and derived equivalence. We show that a Brauer class on a very general polarized K3 surface over a number field becomes trivial upon reduction for a set of places of positive natural density. As a consequence, there are cubic fourfolds which become rational upon reduction for a positive proportion of places, and there are twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces which become derived equivalent upon reduction for a positive proportion of places.
Let X be a K3 surface over a number field K. We prove that there exists a finite algebraic field extension L/K such that X has ordinary reduction at every non-archimedean place of L outside a density zero set of places.
We study the good reduction modulo p of K3 surfaces with complex multiplication. If a K3 surface with complex multiplication has good reduction, we calculate the Picard number and the height of the formal Brauer group of the reduction. Moreover, if the reduction is supersingular, we calculate its Artin invariant under some assumptions. Our results generalize some results of Shimada for K3 surfaces with Picard number 20. Our methods rely on the main theorem of complex multiplication for K3 surfaces by Rizov, an explicit description of the Breuil-Kisin modules associated with Lubin-Tate characte…
The Neron--Ogg--Safarevic criterion for abelian varieties tells that whether an abelian variety has good reduction or not can be determined from the Galois action on its l-adic etale cohomology. We prove an analogue of this criterion for some special kind of K3 surfaces (those which admit Shioda--Inose structures of product type), which are deeply related to abelian surfaces. We also prove a p-adic analogue. This paper includes Ito's unpublished result for Kummer surfaces.
We prove a Neron--Ogg--Shafarevich type criterion for good reduction of K3 surfaces, which states that a K3 surface over a complete discrete valuation field has potential good reduction if its $l$-adic cohomology group is unramified. We also prove a $p$-adic version of the criterion. (These are analogues of the criteria for good reduction of abelian varieties.) The model of the surface will be in general not a scheme but an algebraic space. As a corollary of the criterion we obtain the surjectivity of the period map of K3 surfaces in positive characteristic.
Let $K$ be the field of fractions of a local Henselian DVR with perfect residue field. Assuming potential semi-stable reduction, we show that an unramified Galois-action on second $\ell$-adic cohomology of a K3 surface over $K$ implies that the surface has good reduction after a finite and unramified extension. We give examples where this unramified extension is really needed. Moreover, we give applications to good reduction after tame extensions and Kuga-Satake Abelian varieties. On our way, we settle existence and termination of certain semi-stable flops in mixed characteristic, and study gr…
Heuristics based on the Sato--Tate conjecture suggest that an abelian surface defined over a number field has infinitely many places of split reduction. We prove this result for abelian surfaces having real multiplication. Similar to Charles' theorem on exceptional isogeny of reductions of a given pair of elliptic curves and Elkies' theorem on supersingular reductions of a given elliptic curve, our theorem shows that a density-zero set of primes pertaining to the reduction of abelian varieties is infinite. The proof relies on the Arakelov intersection theory on Hilbert modular surfaces.
Let $A$ be a non-isotrivial ordinary abelian surface over a global function field with good reduction everywhere. Suppose that $A$ does not have real multiplication by any real quadratic field with discriminant a multiple of $p$. We prove that there are infinitely many places modulo which $A$ is isogenous to the product of two elliptic curves.
We study non-isotrivial families of $K3$ surfaces in positive characteristic $p$ whose geometric generic fibers satisfy $ρ\geq21-2h$ and $h\geq3$, where $ρ$ is the Picard number and $h$ is the height of the formal Brauer group. We show that, under a mild assumption on the characteristic of the base field, they have potential supersingular reduction. Our methods rely on Maulik's results on moduli spaces of $K3$ surfaces and the construction of sections of powers of Hodge bundles due to van der Geer and Katsura. For large $p$ and each $2\leq{h}\leq10$, using deformation theory and Taelman's meth…

We investigate versions of the Shafarevich conjecture, as proved for curves and abelian varieties by Faltings, for other classes of varieties. We first obtain analogues for certain Fano threefolds. We use these results to prove the Shafarevich conjecture for smooth sextic surfaces, which appears to be the first non-trivial result in the literature on the arithmetic of such surfaces. Moreover, we exhibit certain moduli stacks of Fano varieties which are not hyperbolic, which allows us to show that the analogue of the Shafarevich conjecture does not always hold for Fano varieties. Our results al…
In this paper, we prove a $p$-adic analogous of the Kulikov-Persson-Pinkham classification theorem [Persson:1981wp] for the central fiber of a degeneration of $K3$-surfaces in terms of the nilpotency degree of the monodromy of the family. Namely, let $X_K$ be a be a smooth, projective $K3$-surface which has a minimal semi-stable model $X$ over $\mathcal O_K$. If we let $N_{st}$ be the monodromy operator on $D_{st}(H^2_{et}}(X_{\overline K},\mathbb Q_p))$, then we prove that the degree of nilpotency of $N_{st}$ determines the type of the special fiber of $X$. As a consequence we give a criterio…
For prime powers q, let s(q) denote the probability that a randomly-chosen principally-polarized abelian surface over the finite field F_q is not simple. We show that there are positive constants B and C such that for all q, B (log q)^{-3}(log log q)^{-4} < s(q)sqrt(q) < C (log q)^4(log log q)^2, and we obtain better estimates under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis. If A is a principally-polarized abelian surface over a number field K, let pi_split(A/K, z) denote the number of prime ideals p of K of norm at most z such that A has good reduction at p and A_p is not simple. W…
Let X be a cubic surface over a local number field k. Given an Azumaya algebra on X, we describe the local evaluation map X(k) -> Q/Z in two cases, showing a sharp dependence on the geometry of the reduction of X. We show that a suitably generic cubic surface over a number field, whose reduction at some prime is a cone, has no Brauer-Manin obstruction. This extends results of Colliot-Thélène, Kanevsky and Sansuc.
Let $E$ be a quadratic imaginary field and let $p$ be a prime which is inert in $E.$ We study three types of Picard modular surfaces in positive characteristic $p$ and the morphisms between them. The first Picard surface, denoted $S$, parametrizes triples $(A,ϕ,ι)$ comprised of an abelian threefold $A$ with an action $ι$ of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{E}$, and a principal polarization $ϕ$. The second surface, $S_{0}(p)$, parametrizes, in addition, a suitably restricted choice of a subgroup $H\subset A[p]$ of rank $p^{2}$. The third Picard surface, $\widetilde{S}$, parametrizes triples $…
Let X be a proper smooth and connected surface over a finite field. We proved in [LLR2] that the order of the Brauer group Br(X) of X is a perfect square if it is finite. Our proof is based in part on a result of Gordon [Gor], which we used in [LLR1] to establish a key formula. Thomas Geisser noted that the formula in [LLR1] is incorrect, due to an omission in [Gor], and provides a corrected formula. We explain in this corrigendum how to modify the work of Gordon to establish a correct formula. The corrected formula can be used to prove the result in [LLR2] without further modifications.
We give cohomological criteria for logarithmic good reduction of elliptic surfaces up to modification. Along the way, we prove several more general results about such surfaces in positive characteristic, as well as about log smooth morphisms.
We present a method to compute the geometric Picard rank of a $K3$ surface over $\bbQ$. Contrary to a widely held belief, we show it is possible to verify Picard rank $1$ using reduction only at a single prime. Our method is based on deformation theory for invertible sheaves.
We give a criterion for the good reduction of semistable $K3$ surfaces over $p$-adic fields using purely $p$-adic methods. We use neither $p$-adic Hodge theory nor transcendental methods as in the analogous proofs of criteria for good reduction of curves or $K3$ surfaces. We achieve our goal by realizing the special fiber $X_s$ of a semistable model $X$ of a $K3$ surface over the $p$-adic field $K$, $X_K$ as a special fiber of a log-family in characteristic $p$ and use an arithmetic version of the Clemens-Schimd exact sequence in order to obtain a Kulikov-Persson-Pinkham classification theorem…
The elliptic modular surface of level 4 is a complex K3 surface with Picard number 20. This surface has a model over a number field such that its reduction modulo 3 yields a surface isomorphic to the Fermat quartic surface in characteristic 3, which is supersingular. The specialization induces an embedding of the Néron-Severi lattices. Using this embedding, we determine the automorphism group of this K3 surface over a discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic whose residue field is of characteristic 3. The elliptic modular surface of level 4 has a fixed-point free involution that gives r…
The classification problem for K3-surfaces equipped with finite groups $H$ of symplectic symmetry centralized by an antisymplectic involution is considered. An approach via equivariant Mori-reduction is employed. This method, which has proved to be successful even for rather small groups, is exemplified here by giving a complete classification in the case $H = C_3 \ltimes C_7$. The consideration of this particular group is related to the study of K3-surfaces with maximal finite groups of symplectic automorphisms. Applications to the case $L_2(7)$ are given.
Let $(X,o)$ be a complex analytic normal surface singularity and let ${\mathcal O}_{X,o}$ be its local ring. We investigate the normal reduction number of ${\mathcal O}_{X,o}$ and related numerical analytical invariants via resolutions $\widetilde{X}\to X$ of $(X,o)$ and cohomology groups of different line bundles ${\mathcal L}\in {\rm Pic}(\widetilde{X})$. The normal reduction number is the universal optimal bound from which powers of certain ideals have stabilization properties. Here we combine this with stability properties of the iterated Abel maps. Some of the main results provide topolog…
We report on our results concerning the distribution of the geometric Picard ranks of $K3$ surfaces under reduction modulo various primes. In the situation that $\rk \Pic S_{\overline{K}}$ is even, we introduce a quadratic character, called the jump character, such that $\rk \Pic S_{\overline\bbF_{\!\frakp}} > \rk \Pic S_{\overline{K}}$ for all good primes, at which the character evaluates to $(-1)$.
We observe that the oriented homeomorphism type of a simply- connected smooth projective surface is determined by its algebraic structure modulo an odd prime of good reduction.
A (smooth) K3 surface X defined over a field k of characteristic 0 is called singular if the Néron-Severi lattice NS (X) of X over the algebraic closure of k is of rank 20. Let X be a singular K3 surface defined over a number field F. For each embedding σof F into the complex number field, we denote by T(X^σ) the transcendental lattice of the complex K3 surface X^σobtained from X by σ. For each prime ideal P of F at which X has a supersingular reduction X_P, we define L(X, P) to be the orthogonal complement of NS(X) in NS(X_P). We investigate the relation between these lattices T(X^σ) and L(X,…
Let $f$ be an automorphism of a complex Enriques surface $Y$ and let $p_f$ denote the characteristic polynomial of the isometry $f^*$ of the numerical Néron-Severi lattice of $Y$ induced by $f$. We apply a modification of McMullen's method to prove that the modulo-$2$ reduction $(p_f(x) \bmod 2)$ is a product of modulo-$2$ reductions of (some of) the five cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_m$, where $m \leq 9$ and $m$ is odd. We study Enriques surfaces that realize modulo-$2$ reductions of $Φ_7$, $Φ_9$ and show that each of the five polynomials $(Φ_m(x) \bmod 2)$ is a factor of the modulo-$2$ reduction…
