A (smooth) K3 surface X defined over a field k of characteristic 0 is called singular if the Néron-Severi lattice NS (X) of X over the algebraic closure of k is of rank 20. Let X be a singular K3 surface defined over a number field F. For each embedding σof F into the complex number field, we denote by T(X^σ) the transcendental lattice of the complex K3 surface X^σobtained from X by σ. For each prime ideal P of F at which X has a supersingular reduction X_P, we define L(X, P) to be the orthogonal complement of NS(X) in NS(X_P). We investigate the relation between these lattices T(X^σ) and L(X, P). As an application, we give a lower bound of the degree of a number field over which a singular K3 surface with a given transcendental lattice can be defined.
We show the existence of 112 non-singular rational curves on the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 3 by several ways. Using these rational curves, we have a $(16)_{10}$-configuration and a $(280_{4}, 112_{10})$-configuration on the K3 surface. Moreover we study the Picard lattice by using the theory of the Leech lattice. The 112 non-singular rational curves correspond to 112 Leech roots.
We present a method of Zariski-van Kampen type for the calculation of the transcendental lattice of a complex projective surface. As an application, we calculate the transcendental lattices of complex singular K3 surfaces associated with an arithmetic Zariski pair of maximizing sextics of type $A_{10}+A_{9}$ that are defined over a real quadratic field and are conjugate to each other over the field of rational numbers.
We compute the transcendental lattices of the singular K3 surfaces belonging to three pencils of K3 surfaces, namely the Apéry-Fermi pencil with transcendental lattice $U\oplus \langle 12 \rangle$, the Verrill's pencil with transcendental lattice $U \oplus \langle 6 \rangle$ and another pencil linked to Verrill's pencil with transcendental lattice $U \oplus \langle 24 \rangle$. Many corollaries are deduced. For example, some singular K3 surfaces belong to different pencils or are Kummer surfaces of K3 surfaces of another pencil.
Let X be a complex algebraic K3 surface or a supersingular K3 surface in odd characteristic. We present an algorithm by which, under certain assumptions on X, we can calculate a finite set of generators of the image of the natural homomorphism from the automorphism group of X to the orthogonal group of the Néron-Severi lattice of X. We then apply this algorithm to certain complex K3 surfaces, among which are singular K3 surfaces whose transcendental lattices are of small discriminants.
We will use flat divisors, and canonically associated singular holomorphic foliations, to investigate some of the geometry of compact complex manifolds. The paper is mainly concerned with three distinct problems: the existence of fibrations, the topology of smooth hypersurfaces and the topological closure of transcendental leaves of foliations.
Let E be the supersingular elliptic curve defined over k, the algebraic closure of the finite field with two elements, which is unique up to k-isomorphism. Denote by 0 its identity element and let C be the quotient of E-{0} under the action of the group Isom(E) (which is non-abelian, of order 24). The main result of this paper asserts that the set C(k) naturally parametrizes k-isomorphism classes of Lamé covers, which are tamely ramified covers of the projective line unramified outside three points having a particular ramification datum. This fact is surprising for two reasons: first of all, i…
We show that the maximal number of singular points of a normal quartic surface $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3_K$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $2$ is at most $20$, and that if equality is attained, then the minimal resolution of $X$ is a supersingular K3 surface and the singular points are $20$ nodes. We produce examples with 14 nodes. In a sequel to this paper (in two parts, the second in collaboration with Matthias Schütt) we show that the optimal bound is indeed 14, and that if equality is attained, then the minimal resolution of $X$ is a supersingular K3 surface…
The purpose of this paper is to establish an injectivity theorem generalized to pseudo-effective line bundles with transcendental (non-algebraic) singular hermitian metrics and multiplier ideal sheaves. As an application, we obtain a Nadel type vanishing theorem. For the proof, we study the asymptotic behavior of the harmonic forms with respect to a family of regularized metrics, and give a method to obtain L2-estimates of solutions of the dbar-equation by using the de Rham-Weil isomorphism between the dbar-cohomology and the check{C}ech cohomology.
For a K3 surface over an algebraically closed field of odd characteristic, the representation of the automorphism group on the global two forms is finite. If the K3 surface is supersingular, it is isomorphic to the representation on the discriminant group of the Neron-Severi group. If the K3 surface is of finite height, the representation on the (etale or crystalline) transcendental cycles is also finite and there is a canonical projection from the representation on the transcendental cycles to the representation on the two forms. We prove that, if the base field is an algebraic closure of a f…
We analyze the geometry of the supersingular locus of the reduction modulo p of a Shimura variety associated to a unitary similitude group GU(1,n-1) over Q, in the case that p is ramified. We define a stratification of this locus and show that its incidence complex is closely related to a certain Bruhat-Tits simplicial complex. Each stratum is isomorphic to a Deligne-Lusztig variety associated to some symplectic group over F_p and some Coxeter element. The closure of each stratum is a normal projective variety with at most isolated singularities. The results are analogous to those of Vollaard/…
A non-classical Godeaux surface is a minimal surface of general type with $χ=K^2=1$ but with $h^{01}\neq0$. We prove that such surfaces fulfill $h^{01}=1$ and they can exist only over fields of positive characteristic at most 5. Like non-classical Enriques surfaces they fall into two classes: the singular and the supersingular ones. We give a complete classification in characteristic 5 and compute their Hodge-, Hodge--Witt- and crystalline cohomology (including torsion). Finally, we give an example of a supersingular Godeaux surface in characteristic 5.
We determine the necessary and sufficient conditions on the entries of the intersection matrix of the transcendental lattice of a K3 surface for the K3 surface to doubly cover an Enriques surface.
Let $\bar{Y}$ be a normal surface that is the canonical $μ_2$- or $α_2$-covering of a classical or supersingular Enriques surface in characteristic $2$. We determine all possible configurations of singularities on $\bar{Y}$, and for each configuration we describe which type of Enriques surfaces (classical or supersingular) appear as quotients of $\bar{Y}$.
We show, in this second part, that the maximal number of singular points of a quartic surface $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3_K$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic 2 is at most 14, and that, if we have 14 singularities, these are nodes and moreover the minimal resolution of $X$ is a supersingular K3 surface. We produce an irreducible component, of dimension 24, of the variety of quartics with 14 nodes. We also exhibit easy examples of quartics with 7 $A_3$-singularities.
Over $\C$, Henry Laufer classified all taut surface singularities. We adapt and extent his transcendental methods to positive characteristic. With this we show that if a normal surface singularity is taut over $\C$, then the normal surface singularities with isomorphic dual graph over algebraically closed fields of characteristic exponent $p>1$ are taut for all but finitely many $p$. We conjecture that this is actually "if and only if".
This paper studies the arithmetic of the extremal elliptic K3 surface with configuration of singular fibres [19,1,1,1,1,1]. We give a model over Q such that the Neron Severi group is generated by divisors over Q, and we describe the local Hasse-Weil zeta-functions in terms of a modular form of weight 3. Furthermore we verify the Tate conjecture for the reduction at 3 and comment on a conjecture of T. Shioda concerning the similarity of the lattice of transcendental cycles and a lattice resulting from supersingular reduction.
We classify, up to automorphisms, the elliptic fibrations on the singular K3 surface $X$ whose transcendental lattice is isometric to $\langle 6\rangle\oplus \langle 2\rangle$.
We classify Enriques involutions on a K3 surface, up to conjugation in the automorphism group, in terms of lattice theory. We enumerate such involutions on singular K3 surfaces with transcendental lattice of discriminant smaller than or equal to 36. For 11 of these K3 surfaces, we apply Borcherds method to compute the automorphism group of the Enriques surfaces covered by them. In particular, we investigate the structure of the two most algebraic Enriques surfaces.
Given a generic $K3$ surface $Y_k$ of the Apéry-Fermi pencil, we use the Kneser-Nishiyama technique to determine all its non isomorphic elliptic fibrations. These computations lead to determine those fibrations with 2-torsion sections T. We classify the fibrations such that the translation by T gives a Shioda-Inose structure. The other fibrations correspond to a K3 surface identified by it transcendental lattice. The same problem is solved for a singular member $Y_2$ of the family showing the differences with the generic case. In conclusion we put our results in the context of relations betwee…
Given an abelian surface, the number of its distinct decompositions into a product of elliptic curves has been described by Ma. Moreover, Ma himself classified the possible decompositions for abelian surfaces of Picard number $1 \leq ρ\leq 3$. We explicitly find all such decompositions in the case of abelian surfaces of Picard number $ρ= 4$. This is done by computing the transcendental lattice of products of isogenous elliptic curves with complex multiplication, generalizing a technique of Shioda and Mitani, and by studying the action of a certain class group on the factors of a given decompos…
We show that the Davenport-Stothers inequality from characteristic 0 fails in any characteristic p>3. The proof uses elliptic surfaces over the projective line and inseparable base change. We then present adjusted inequalities. These follow from results of Pesenti-Szpiro. For characteristic 2 and 3, we achieve a similar result in terms of the maximal singular fibres of elliptic surfaces over the projective line. Our ideas are also related to supersingular surfaces (in Shioda's sense).
We prove a higher dimensional generalization of Gross and Zagier's theorem on the factorization of differences of singular moduli. Their result is proved by giving a counting formula for the number of isomorphisms between elliptic curves with complex multiplication by two different imaginary quadratic fields $K$ and $K^\prime$, when the curves are reduced modulo a supersingular prime and its powers. Equivalently, the Gross-Zagier formula counts optimal embeddings of the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field into particular maximal orders in $B_{p, \infty}$, the definite quaternion a…
We introduce an algebro-geometrically motived integration-by-parts (IBP) reduction method for multi-loop and multi-scale Feynman integrals, using a framework for massively parallel computations in computer algebra. This framework combines the computer algebra system Singular with the workflow management system GPI-Space, which is being developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM). In our approach, the IBP relations are first trimmed by modern algebraic geometry tools and then solved by sparse linear algebra and our new interpolation methods. These steps are efficient…
A superspecial curve is a (non-singular) curve over a field of positive characteristic whose Jacobian variety is isomorphic to a product of supersingular elliptic curves over the algebraic closure. It is known that for given genus and characteristic, there exist only finitely many superspecial curves, up to isomorphism over an algebraically closed field. In this article, we give a brief survey on results of counting isomorphism classes of superspecial curves. In particular, this article summarizes some recent results in the case of genera four and five, obtained by the author and S.\ Harashita…
