A non-classical Godeaux surface is a minimal surface of general type with $χ=K^2=1$ but with $h^{01}\neq0$. We prove that such surfaces fulfill $h^{01}=1$ and they can exist only over fields of positive characteristic at most 5. Like non-classical Enriques surfaces they fall into two classes: the singular and the supersingular ones. We give a complete classification in characteristic 5 and compute their Hodge-, Hodge--Witt- and crystalline cohomology (including torsion). Finally, we give an example of a supersingular Godeaux surface in characteristic 5.
Extending the description of canonical rings from \cite{reid78} we show that every Gorenstein stable Godeaux surface with torsion of order at least $3$ is smoothable.
We show that all the semi-smooth stable complex Godeaux surfaces, classified in [FPR18a], are smoothable, and that the moduli stack is smooth of the expected dimension 8 at the corresponding points.
We compute equations for Coughlan's family of Godeaux surfaces with torsion $\mathbb Z/2$, which we call $\mathbb Z/2$-Godeaux surfaces, and we show that it is (at most) 7 dimensional. We classify non-rational KSBA degenerations $W$ of $\mathbb Z/2$-Godeaux surfaces with one Wahl singularity, showing that $W$ is birational to particular either Enriques surfaces, or $D_{2,n}$ elliptic surfaces, with $n=3,4$ or $6$. We present examples for all possibilities in the first case, and for $n=3,4$ in the second.
A recent construction of Hacking relates the classification of stable vector bundles on a surface of general type with $p_g = 0$ and the boundary of the moduli space of deformations of the surface. In the present paper we analyze this relation for Godeaux surfaces. We provide a description of certain boundary components of the moduli space of Godeaux surfaces. Also we explicitly construct certain exceptional vector bundles of rank 2 on Godeaux surfaces, stable with respect to the canonical class, and examine the correspondence between the boundary components and such exceptional vector bundles…
In this paper we describe a construction method for numerical Godeaux surfaces based on homological algebra. We show the existence of an 8-dimensional locally complete family of simply connected numerical Godeaux surfaces.
We give an explicit description of the Godeaux surfaces that admit an involution such that the quotient surface is birational to an Enriques surface; these surfaces give a 6-dimensional unirational irreducible subset of the moduli space of surfaces of general type. In addition, we describe the Enriques surfaces that are birational to the quotient of a Godeaux surface by an involution and we show that they give a 5-dimensional unirational irreducible subset of the moduli space of Enriques surfaces. Finally, by degenerating our description we obtain some examples of non-normal stable Godeaux sur…
We study the extension of a hyperelliptic K3 surface to a Fano 6-fold. This determines a family of surfaces of general type with p_g=1, K^2=2 and hyperelliptic canonical curve, where each surface is a weighted complete intersection inside a Fano 6-fold. Finally, we use these hyperelliptic surfaces to determine an 8-parameter family of Godeaux surfaces with torsion Z/2.
Let $X$ be a Godeaux surface over $\mathbb{C}$ and $q_{X}\colon Y\to X$ be its universal cover. We show that the pullback map $q^{*}_{X}\colon Br(X)\to Br(Y)$ is injective if $ρ(Y)=9$. Our arguments rely on a degeneration technique that also applies to other examples.
In this paper we study marked numerical Godeaux surfaces with special bicanonical fibers. Based on our construction method of marked Godeaux surfaces we give a complete characterization for the existence of hyperelliptic bicanonical fibers and torsion fibers. Moreover, we describe how the families of Reid and Miyaoka with torsion $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}/5\mathbb{Z}$ arise in our homological setting.
We construct from a general del Pezzo surface of degree 1 a Gorenstein stable surfaces $X$ with $K_X^2=1$ and $p_g(X)=q(X)=0$. These surfaces are not smoothable but give an open subset of an irreducible component of the moduli space of stable Godeaux surfaces. In a particular example we also compute the canonical ring explicitly and discuss the behaviour of pluricanonical maps.
We prove that Godeaux--Reid surfaces with torsion group Z/3 have topological fundamental group Z/3. For this purpose, we describe degenerations to stable KSBA surfaces with one 1/4(1,1) singularity, whose minimal resolution are elliptic fibrations with two multiplicity 3 fibres and one I_4 singular fibre. We study special such degenerations which have an involution, describing the corresponding Campedelli double plane construction. We also find some stable rational degenerations, some of which have more singularities, and one of which has a single 1/9(1,2) singularity, the minimal possible ind…
We compute the automorphisms groups of all numerical Godeaux surfaces, i.e. minimal smooth surfaces of general type with K^2 = 1 and p_g = 0, with torsion of the Picard group of order νequals 3, 4, or 5. We present explicit stratifications of the moduli spaces whose strata correspond to different automorphisms groups. Using the automorphisms computation, for each value of νwe define a quotient stack, and prove that for ν= 5 this is indeed the moduli stack of numerical Godeaux surfaces with torsion of order 5. Finally, we describe the inertia stacks of the three quotient stacks.
Minimal algebraic surfaces of general type with the smallest possible invariants have geometric genus zero and K^2=1 and are usually called "numerical Godeaux surfaces". Although they have been studied by several authors, their complete classification is not known. In this paper we classify numerical Godeaux surfaces with an involution, i.e. with an automorphism of order 2. We prove that they are birationally equivalent either to double covers of Enriques surfaces, or to double planes of two different types: the branch curve either has degree 10 and suitable singularities, originally suggested…
We construct an exceptional sequence of length 11 on the classical Godeaux surface X which is the Z/5-quotient of the Fermat quintic surface in P^3. This is the maximal possible length of such a sequence on this surface which has Grothendieck group Z^11+Z/5. In particular, the result answers Kuznetsov's Nonvanishing Conjecture, which concerns Hochschild homology of an admissible subcategory, in the negative. The sequence carries a symmetry when interpreted in terms of the root lattice of the simple Lie algebra of type E_8. We also produce explicit nonzero objects in the (right) orthogonal to t…
We prove that a recent construction of a numerical Godeaux surface due to P. Craighero and R. Gattazzo is simply connected, and show how to realize their construction as a double plane. By proving that the surface contains no (-2)-curves, we obtain that this is the first example of a simply connected surface with vanishing geometric genus and ample canonical class.
We give a short proof of the following result: Let $X$ be a complex surface of general type. If the canonical divisor of the minimal model of $X$ has selfintersection $= 1$, then $X$ is not diffeomorphic to a rational surface. Our proof is the natural extension of the argument given in our paper in Inventiones Mathematicae (1989) for the case when $X$ is minimal. This argument also gives information about the non--existence of certain smooth embeddings of $2$--spheres in $X$, if $X$ has geometric genus zero.
In this paper we give an upper bound on the number of rational points on an irreducible curve $C$ of degree $δ$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ lying on a Frobenius classical surface $S$ embedded in $\mathbb{P}^3$. This leads us to investigate arithmetic properties of curves lying on surfaces. In a certain range of $δ$ and $q$, our result improves all other known bounds in the context of space curves.
Bielliptic surfaces are the last family of Kodaira dimension zero algebraic surfaces without a classification result for the Chern characters of stable sheaves. We rectify this and prove such a classification using a combination of classical techniques, on the one hand, and derived category and Bridgeland stability techniques, on the other. Along the way, we prove the existence of projective coarse moduli spaces of objects in the derived category of a bielliptic surface that Bridgeland semistable with respect to a generic stability condition. By systematically studying the connection between B…
Let $X$ be a K3 surface, and $H$ its primitive polarization of the degree $H^2=8$. The moduli space of sheaves over $X$ with the isotropic Mukai vector $(2,H,2)$ is again a K3 surface, $Y$. In math.AG/0206158 we gave necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of Picard lattice of $X$ when $Y$ is isomorphic to $X$. The proof of sufficient condition in math.AG/0206158, when $Y$ is isomorphic to $X$, used Global Torelli Theorem for K3 surfaces, and it was not effective. Here we give an effective variant of these results: its sufficient part gives an explicit isomorphism between $Y$ and $X$. We …
Let X be a K3 surface which is intersection of three (a net P^2) of quadrics in P^5. The curve of degenerate quadrics has degree 6 and defines a double covering of P^2 K3 surface Y ramified in this curve. This is a classical example of a correspondence between K3 surfaces which is related with moduli of vector bundles on K3 studied by Mukai. When general (for fixed Picard lattices) X and Y are isomorphic? We give necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of Picard lattices of X and Y. E.g. for Picard number 2, the Picard lattice of X and Y is defined by its determinant (-d) where d>0, d\equ…
We classify morphisms from proper varieties to Brauer-Severi varieties, which generalizes the classical correspondence between morphisms to projective space and globally generated invertible sheaves. As an application, we study del Pezzo surfaces of large degree with a view towards Brauer-Severi varieties, and recover classical results on rational points, the Hasse principle, and weak approximation.
We construct moduli spaces of semistable objects on an Enriques surface for generic Bridgeland stability condition and prove their projectivity. We further generalize classical results about moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on an Enriques surface to their Bridgeland counterparts. Using Bayer and Macrì's construction of a natural nef divisor varying with the stability condition, we begin a systematic exploration of the relation between wall-crossing on the Bridgeland stability manifold and the minimal model program for these moduli spaces. We give three applications of our machinery to obtai…
Let $\bar{Y}$ be a normal surface that is the canonical $μ_2$- or $α_2$-covering of a classical or supersingular Enriques surface in characteristic $2$. We determine all possible configurations of singularities on $\bar{Y}$, and for each configuration we describe which type of Enriques surfaces (classical or supersingular) appear as quotients of $\bar{Y}$.

Let X be a K3 surface and H a primitive polarization of degree H^2=2a^2, a>1. The moduli space of sheaves over X with the isotropic Mukai vector (a,H,a) is again a K3 surface Y which is endowed by a natural nef element h with h^2=2. We give necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of Picard lattices N(X) and N(Y) when Y\cong X, generalising our results math.AG/0206158 for a=2. E.g. we show that Y\cong X if for one of α=\pm 1,\pm 2 which is coprime to a there exists h_1\in N(X) such that h_1^2= 2αa, H\cdot h_1\equiv 0\mod αa, and the primitive sublattice [H,h_1]_{pr} \subset N(X) contains x…
As an application of universal polynomials for local and multi-singularities of maps, we revisit classical enumerative formulae of Salmon-Cayley-Zeuthen for projective surfaces and analogous formulae of Segre-(B.)Severi-Roth for projective $3$-folds. In particular, several examples of actual computation are given using universal polynomials for computing weighted Euler characteristics of singularity loci.
Higgs bundles and non-abelian Hodge theory provide holomorphic methods with which to study the moduli spaces of surface group representations in a reductive Lie group G. In this paper we survey the case in which G is the isometry group of a classical Hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type. Using Morse theory on the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles, we compute the number of connected components of the moduli space of representations with maximal Toledo invariant.
We study the tropical lines contained in smooth tropical surfaces in R^3. On smooth tropical quadric surfaces we find two one-dimensional families of tropical lines, like in classical algebraic geometry. Unlike the classical case, however, there exist smooth tropical surfaces of any degree with infinitely many tropical lines.
We propose the graph description of Teichmüller theory of surfaces with marked points on boundary components (bordered surfaces). Introducing new parameters, we formulate this theory in terms of hyperbolic geometry. We can then describe both classical and quantum theories having the proper number of Thurston variables (foliation-shear coordinates), mapping-class group invariance (both classical and quantum), Poisson and quantum algebra of geodesic functions, and classical and quantum braid-group relations. These new algebras can be defined on the double of the corresponding graph related (in a…
We describe semiuniversal deformation spaces for the noncompact surfaces $Z_k := \operatorname{Tot} (\mathcal O_{\mathbb P^1} (-k))$ and prove that any nontrivial deformation $Z_k (τ)$ of $Z_k$ is affine. It is known that the moduli spaces of instantons of charge $j$ on $Z_k$ are quasi-projective varieties of dimension $2j-k-2$. In contrast, our results imply that the moduli spaces of instantons on any nontrivial deformation $Z_k (τ)$ are empty.
