We study the tropical lines contained in smooth tropical surfaces in R^3. On smooth tropical quadric surfaces we find two one-dimensional families of tropical lines, like in classical algebraic geometry. Unlike the classical case, however, there exist smooth tropical surfaces of any degree with infinitely many tropical lines.
In this article we introduce the recently developed polymake extension TropicalQuarticCurves and its associated database entry in polyDB dealing with smooth tropical quartic curves. We report on algorithms implemented to analyze tropical bitangents and their lifting conditions over real closed valued fields. The new functions and data were used by the authors to provide a tropical proof of Plücker and Zeuthen's count of real bitangents to smooth quartic curves.
In analogy to chapter 9 of arXiv:0709.3705 we define an intersection product of tropical cycles on tropical linear spaces L^n_k, i.e. on tropical fans of the type max{0,x_1,...,x_n}^(n-k)*R^n. Afterwards we use this result to obtain an intersection product of cycles on every smooth tropical variety, i.e. on every tropical variety that arises from gluing such tropical linear spaces. In contrast to classical algebraic geometry these products always yield well-defined cycles, not cycle classes only. Using these intersection products we are able to define the pull-back of a tropical cycle along a …
We study bitangents of non-smooth tropical plane quartics. Our main result is that with appropriate multiplicities, every such curve has 7 equivalence classes of bitangent lines. Moreover, the multiplicity of bitangent lines varies continuously in families of tropical plane curves.
We study smooth tropical plane quartic curves and show that they satisfy certain properties analogous to (but also different from) smooth plane quartics in algebraic geometry. For example, we show that every such curve admits either infinitely many or exactly 7 bitangent lines. We also prove that a smooth tropical plane quartic curve cannot be hyperelliptic.
We present results on the relative realizability of infinite families of lines on general smooth tropical cubic surfaces. Inspired by the problem of relative realizability of lines on surfaces, we investigate the information we can derive tropically from the Brundu-Logar normal form of smooth cubic surfaces. In particular, we prove that for a residue field of characteristic $\neq 2$ the tropicalization of the Brundu-Logar normal form is not smooth. We also take first steps in investigating the behavior of the tropicalized lines.
A tropical complete intersection curve C in R^(n+1) is a transversal intersection of n smooth tropical hypersurfaces. We give a formula for the number of vertices of C given by the degrees of the tropical hypersurfaces. We also compute the genus of C (defined as the number of independent cycles of C) when C is smooth and connected.
Given a tropical line $L$ and a smooth tropical surface $X$, we look at the position of $L$ on $X$. We introduce its primal and dual motif which are respectively a decorated graph and a subcomplex of the dual triangulation of $X$. They encode the combinatorial position of $L$ on $X$. We classify all possible motifs of tropical lines on general smooth tropical surfaces. This classification allows to give an upper bound for the number of tropical lines on a general smooth tropical surface with a given subdivision. We focus in particular on surfaces of degree three. As a concrete example, we look…
A smooth tropical quartic curve has seven tropical bitangent classes. Their shapes can vary within the same combinatorial type of curve. We study deformations of these shapes and we show that the conditions determined by Cueto and Markwig for lifting them to real bitangent lines are independent of the deformations. From this we deduce a tropical proof of Plücker and Zeuthen's count of the number of real bitangents to smooth plane quartic curves.
We develop a method for describing the tropical complete intersection of a tropical hypersurface and a tropical plane in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This involves a method for determining the topological type of the intersection of a tropical plane curve and $\mathbb{R}_{\leq 0}^2$ by using a polyhedral complex. As an application, we study smooth tropical complete intersection curves of genus $3$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. In particular, we show that there are no smooth tropical complete intersection curves in $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose skeletons are the lollipop graph of genus $3$. This gives a partial answer to a pro…
For a divisor $D$ on a tropical variety $X$, we define two amounts in order to estimate the value of $h^{0}(X,D)$, which are described by terms of global sections and computed more easily than $h^{0}(X,D)$. As an application of its estimation, we show that a Riemann-Roch inequality holds for smooth tropical toric surfaces.
We study lifts of tropical bitangents to the tropicalization of a given complex algebraic curve together with their lifting multiplicities. Using this characterization, we show that generically all the seven bitangents of a smooth tropical plane quartic lift in sets of four to algebraic bitangents. We do this constructively, i.e. we give solutions for the initial terms of the coefficients of the bitangent lines. This is a step towards a tropical proof that a general smooth quartic admits 28 bitangent lines. The methods are also appropriate to count real bitangents, however the conditions to de…
First, we define phase tropical hypersurfaces in terms of a degeneration data of smooth complex algebraic hypersurfaces in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$. Next, we prove that complex hyperplanes are diffeomorphic to their degeneration called phase tropical hyperplanes. More generally, using Mikhalkin's decomposition into pairs-of-pants of smooth algebraic hypersurfaces, we show that phase tropical hypersurfaces with smooth tropicalization, possess naturally a smooth differentiable structure. Moreover, we prove that phase tropical hypersurfaces possess a natural symplectic structure.
Any smooth tropical plane curve contains a distinguished trivalent graph called its skeleton. In 2020 Morrison and Tewari proved that the so-called big face graphs cannot be the skeleta of tropical curves for genus $12$ and greater. In this paper we answer an open question they posed to extend their result to the prism graphs, proving that they are the skeleton of a smooth tropical plane curve precisely when the genus is at most $11$. Our main tool is a classification of lattice polygons with two points than can simultaneously view all others, without having any one point that can observe all …
The aim of this paper is to study homological properties of tropical fans and to propose a notion of smoothness in tropical geometry, which goes beyond matroids and their Bergman fans and which leads to an enrichment of the category of smooth tropical varieties. Among the resulting applications, we prove the Hodge isomorphism theorem which asserts that the Chow rings of smooth unimodular tropical fans are isomorphic to the tropical cohomology rings of their corresponding canonical compactifications, and prove a slightly weaker statement for any unimodular fan. We furthermore introduce a notion…
We study tropically planar graphs, which are the graphs that appear in smooth tropical plane curves. We develop necessary conditions for graphs to be tropically planar, and compute the number of tropically planar graphs up to genus $7$. We provide non-trivial upper and lower bounds on the number of tropically planar graphs, and prove that asymptotically $0\%$ of connected trivalent planar graphs are tropically planar.
In analogy with the classical group law on a plane cubic curve, we define a group law on a smooth plane tropical cubic curve. We show that the resulting group is isomorphic to $S^1$.
We introduce the notion of families of n-marked smooth rational tropical curves over smooth tropical varieties and establish a one-to-one correspondence between (equivalence classes of) these families and morphisms from smooth tropical varieties into the moduli space of n-marked abstract rational tropical curves.
We prove a Poincaré duality for the Chow rings of smooth fans whose support are tropical linear spaces. As a consequence, we show that cycles and cocycles on tropical manifolds are Poincaré dual to each other. This allows us to define pull-backs of tropical cycles along arbitrary morphisms with smooth target.
We provide some new local obstructions to approximating tropical curves in smooth tropical surfaces. These obstructions are based on the relation between tropical and complex intersection theories which is also established here. We give two applications of the methods developed in this paper. First we classify all locally irreducible approximable 3-valent fan tropical curves in a non-singular fan tropical plane. Secondly, we prove that a generic non-singular tropical surface in tropical projective 3-space contains finitely many approximable tropical lines if it is of degree 3, and contains no …
In this paper we study the moduli space of the tropicalizations of Riemann surfaces. We first tropicalize a smooth pointed Riemann surface by a graph defined by its (hyperbolic) pair of pants decomposition. Then we can construct the moduli space of tropicalizations based on a fixed regular tropicalization, and compactify it by adding strata parametrizing weighted contractions. We show that this compact moduli space is also Hausdorff. In the end, we compare this moduli space with the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, establishing a partial order-preserving correspondence between the stratificat…
The classical statement of Cayley-Salmon that there are 27 lines on every smooth cubic surface in P^3 fails to hold under tropicalization: a tropical cubic surface in TP^3 often contains infinitely many tropical lines. Under mild genericity assumptions, we show that when embedded using the Eckardt triangles in the anticanonical system, tropical cubic del Pezzo surfaces contain exactly 27 tropical lines. In the non-generic case, which we identify explicitly, we find up to 27 extra lines, no multiple of which lifts to a curve on the cubic surface. We realize the moduli space of stable anticanoni…
Consider a log Calabi-Yau pair $(X,D)$ consisting of a smooth del Pezzo surface $X$ of degree $\geq 3$ and a smooth anticanonical divisor $D$. We prove a correspondence between genus zero logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$ intersecting $D$ in a single point with maximal tangency and the consistent wall structure appearing in the dual intersection complex of $(X,D)$ from the Gross-Siebert reconstruction algorithm. More precisely, the logarithm of the product of functions attached to unbounded walls in the consistent wall structure gives a generating function for these invariants.
A $K_4$-curve is a smooth, proper curve X of genus 3 over a nonarchimedean field whose Berkovich skeleton $Γ$ is a complete graph on 4 vertices. The curve X has 28 effective theta characteristics, i.e. the 28 bitangents to a canonical embedding, while $Γ$ has exactly seven tropical theta characteristics, as shown by Zharkov. We prove that the 28 effective theta characteristics of a $K_4$-curve specialize to the theta characteristics of its minimal skeleton in seven groups of four.
The gonality sequence $(d_r)_{r\geq1}$ of a smooth algebraic curve comprises the minimal degrees $d_r$ of linear systems of rank $r$. We explain two approaches to compute the gonality sequence of smooth curves in $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$: a tropical and a classical approach. The tropical approach uses the recently developed Brill--Noether theory on tropical curves and Baker's specialization of linear systems from curves to metric graphs. The classical one extends the work of Hartshorne on plane curves to curves on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$.
We exploit three classical characterizations of smooth genus two curves to study their tropical and analytic counterparts. First, we provide a combinatorial rule to determine the dual graph of each algebraic curve and the metric structure on the associated minimal Berkovich skeleton. Our main tool is the description of genus two curves via hyperelliptic covers of P^1 with six branch points. Given the valuations of these six points and their differences, our algorithm provides an explicit harmonic 2-to-1 map to a metric tree on six leaves. Second, we use tropical modifications to produce a fait…
We study whether a given tropical curve $Γ$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be realized as the tropicalization of an algebraic curve whose non-archimedean skeleton is faithfully represented by $Γ$. We give an affirmative answer to this question for a large class of tropical curves that includes all trivalent tropical curves, but also many tropical curves of higher valence. We then deduce that for every metric graph $G$ with rational edge lengths there exists a smooth algebraic curve in a toric variety whose analytification has skeleton $G$, and the corresponding tropicalization is faithful. Our approach…
We construct moduli spaces of rational covers of an arbitrary smooth tropical curve in R^r as tropical varieties. They are contained in the balanced fan parametrizing tropical stable maps of the appropriate degree to R^r. The weights of the top-dimensional polyhedra are given in terms of certain lattice indices and local Hurwitz numbers.
Let $\{V_q\}_{q}$ be a complex one-parameter family of smooth hypersurfaces in a toric variety. In this paper, we give a concrete description of the monodromy transformation of $\{V_q\}_q$ around $q=\infty$ in terms of tropical geometry. The main tool is the tropical localization introduced by Mikhalkin.
Hassett's moduli spaces of weighted stable curves form an important class of alternate modular compactifications of the moduli space of smooth curves with marked points. In this article we define a tropical analogue of these moduli spaces and show that the naive set-theoretic tropicalization map can be identified with a natural deformation retraction onto the non-Archimedean skeleton. This result generalizes work of Abramovich, Caporaso, and Payne treating the Deligne-Knudsen-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of smooth curves with marked points. We also study tropical analogues of t…
We introduce the notion of tropical Lagrangian multi-sections over a $2$-dimensional integral affine manifold $B$ with singularities, and use them to study the reconstruction problem for higher rank locally free sheaves over Calabi-Yau surfaces. To certain tropical Lagrangian multi-sections $\mathbb{L}$ over $B$, which are explicitly constructed by prescribing local models around the ramification points, we construct locally free sheaves $\mathcal{E}_0(\mathbb{L},{\bf{k}}_s)$ over the singular projective scheme $X_0(B,\mathscr{P},s)$ associated to $B$ equipped with a polyhedral decomposition $…
We prove that a smooth tropical hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be lifted to a smooth embedded Lagrangian submanifold in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^3$. This completes the proof of the result announced in the article "Lagrangian pairs pants" arXiv:1802.02993. The idea of the proof is to use Lagrangian pairs of pants as the main building blocks.
The Ceresa cycle is an algebraic cycle attached to a smooth algebraic curve with a marked point, which is trivial when the curve is hyperelliptic with a marked Weierstrass point. The image of the Ceresa cycle under a certain cycle class map provides a class in étale cohomology called the Ceresa class. Describing the Ceresa class explicitly for non-hyperelliptic curves is in general not easy. We present a "combinatorialization" of this problem, explaining how to define a Ceresa class for a tropical algebraic curve, and also for a topological surface endowed with a multiset of commuting Dehn twi…
We give a functorial normal crossing compactification of the moduli of smooth marked cubic surfaces entirely analogous to the Grothendieck-Knudsen compactification $M_{0,n} \subset \bar{M}_{0,n}$.
Given a smooth Mori dream space $X$ we construct a model dominating all the small $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial modifications via tropicalization. This construction allows us to recover a Minkowski basis for the Newton-Okounkov bodies of divisors on $X$ and hence the movable cone of $X$. The existence of such basis allows us to prove the polyhedrality of the global Newton-Okounkov body and the existence of toric degenerations.
Smooth tropical cubic surfaces are parametrized by maximal cones in the unimodular secondary fan of the triple tetrahedron. There are $344\, 843 \,867$ such cones, organized into a database of $14\,373\,645$ symmetry classes. The Schläfli fan gives a further refinement of these cones. It reveals all possible patterns of lines on tropical cubic surfaces, thus serving as a combinatorial base space for the universal Fano variety. This article develops the relevant theory and offers a blueprint for the analysis of big data in tropical geometry.
We construct a smooth complex projective rational surface with infinitely many mutually non-isomorphic real forms. This gives the first definite answer to a long standing open question if a smooth complex projective rational surface has only finitely many non-isomorphic real forms or not.
We show, among other things, that for each integer $n \ge 3$, there is a smooth complex projective rational variety of dimension $n$, with discrete non-finitely generated automorphism group and with infinitely many mutually non-isomorphic real forms. Our result is inspired by the work of Lesieutre and the work of Dinh and Oguiso.
Given a smooth projective toric variety X, we construct an A-infinity category of Lagrangians with boundary on a level set of the Landau-Ginzburg mirror of X. We prove that this category is quasi-equivalent to the DG category of line bundles on X. This establishes part of the Homological Mirror Conjecture for toric varieties.
We look at how one can construct from the data of a dimer model a Lagrangian submanifold in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ whose valuation projection approximates a tropical hypersurface. Each face of the dimer corresponds to a Lagrangian disk with boundary on our tropical Lagrangian submanifold, forming a Lagrangian mutation seed. Using this we find tropical Lagrangian tori $L_{T^2}$ in the complement of a smooth anticanonical divisor of a toric del-Pezzo whose wall-crossing transformations match those of monotone SYZ fibers. An example is worked out for the mirror pair $(\mathbb{CP}^2\setminus E, W), \c…
The aim of this paper is twofold. First of all, we confirm a few basic criteria of the finiteness of real forms of a given smooth complex projective variety, in terms of the Galois cohomology set of the discrete part of the automorphism group, the cone conjecture and the topological entropy. We then apply them to show that a smooth complex projective surface has at most finitely many non-isomorphic real forms unless it is either rational or a non-minimal surface birational to either a K3 surface or an Enriques surface. In the second part of the paper, we construct an Enriques surface whose blo…
We study smooth integral curves of bidegree $(1,1)$, called \textit{smooth conics}, in the flag threefold $\mathbb{F}$. The study is motivated by the fact that the family of smooth conics contains the set of fibers of the twistor projection $\mathbb{F}\to\mathbb{CP}^{2}$. We give a bound on the maximum number of smooth conics contained in a smooth surface $S\subset\mathbb{F}$. Then, we show qualitative properties of algebraic surfaces containing a prescribed number of smooth conics. Lastly, we study surfaces containing infinitely many twistor fibers. We show that the only smooth cases are surf…
In this paper we construct explicit smooth solutions to the Strominger system on generalized Calabi-Gray manifolds, which are compact non-Kähler Calabi-Yau 3-folds with infinitely many distinct topological types and sets of Hodge numbers.
