In this paper we review existing hard-decision decoding algorithms for product codes along with different post-processing techniques used in conjunction with the iterative decoder for product codes. We improve the decoder by Reddy and Robinson and use it to create a new post-processing technique. The performance of this new post-processing technique is evaluated through simulations, and these suggest that our new post-processing technique outperforms previously known post-processing techniques which are not tailored for specific codes. The cost of using the new post-processing technique is that the algorithm becomes more complex. However, the post-processing is applied very rarely unless the channel is very noisy, and hence the increase in computational complexity is negligible for most choices of parameters. Finally, we propose a new algorithm that combines existing techniques in a way that avoids the error floor with short relatively high rate codes. The algorithm should also avoid the error floor with long high rate codes, but further work is needed to confirm this.
An algebraic soft-decision decoder for Hermitian codes is presented. We apply Koetter and Vardy's soft-decision decoding framework, now well established for Reed-Solomon codes, to Hermitian codes. First we provide an algebraic foundation for soft-decision decoding. Then we present an interpolation algorithm finding the Q-polynomial that plays a key role in the decoding. With some simulation results, we compare performances of the algebraic soft-decision decoders for Hermitian codes and Reed-Solomon codes, favorable to the former.
In this paper, we present an iterative soft-decision decoding algorithm for Reed-Solomon codes offering both complexity and performance advantages over previously known decoding algorithms. Our algorithm is a list decoding algorithm which combines two powerful soft decision decoding techniques which were previously regarded in the literature as competitive, namely, the Koetter-Vardy algebraic soft-decision decoding algorithm and belief-propagation based on adaptive parity check matrices, recently proposed by Jiang and Narayanan. Building on the Jiang-Narayanan algorithm, we present a belief-pr…
The performance of algebraic soft-decision decoding of Reed-Solomon codes using bit-level soft information is investigated. Optimal multiplicity assignment strategies of algebraic soft-decision decoding with infinite cost are first studied over erasure channels and the binary symmetric channel. The corresponding decoding radii are calculated in closed forms and tight bounds on the error probability are derived. The multiplicity assignment strategy and the corresponding performance analysis are then generalized to characterize the decoding region of algebraic softdecision decoding over a mixed …
We consider probabilistic shaping to maximize the achievable information rate of coded modulation (CM) with hard decision decoding. The proposed scheme using binary staircase codes outperforms its uniform CM counterpart by more than 1.3 dB for 64-QAM and 5 bits/symbol.
In this paper, a new algebraic soft-decision decoding algorithm for Reed-Solomon code is presented. It is based on rational interpolation and the interpolation points are constructed by Berlekamp-Messay algorithm. Unlike the traditional K{ö}tter-Vardy algorithm, new algorithm needs interpolation for two smaller multiplicity matrixes, due to the corresponding factorization algorithm for re-constructing codewords.
The binary primitive BCH codes are cyclic and are constructed by choosing a subset of the cyclotomic cosets. Which subset is chosen determines the dimension, the minimum distance and the weight distribution of the BCH code. We construct possible BCH codes and determine their coderate, true minimum distance and the non-equivalent codes. A particular choice of cyclotomic cosets gives BCH codes which are, extended by one bit, equivalent to Reed-Muller codes, which is a known result from the sixties. We show that BCH codes have possibly better parameters than Reed-Muller codes, which are related i…
In this paper we explore the decision regions of Linear Programming (LP) decoding. We compare the decision regions of an LP decoder, a Belief Propagation (BP) decoder and the optimal Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoder. We study the effect of minimal-weight pseudocodewords on LP decoding. We present global optimization as a method for finding the minimal pseudoweight of a given code as well as the number of minimal-weight generators. We present a complete pseudoweight distribution for the [24; 12; 8] extended Golay code, and provide justifications of why the pseudoweight distribution alone cannot …
We investigate the decoding region for Algebraic Soft-Decision Decoding (ASD) of Reed-Solomon codes in a discrete, memoryless, additive-noise channel. An expression is derived for the error correction radius within which the soft-decision decoder produces a list that contains the transmitted codeword. The error radius for ASD is shown to be larger than that of Guruswami-Sudan hard-decision decoding for a subset of low-rate codes. These results are also extended to multivariable interpolation in the sense of Parvaresh and Vardy. An upper bound is then presented for ASD's probability of error, w…
This paper presents a generalized construction of RS-SPC product codes. A low-complexity joint-decoding scheme is proposed for these codes, in which a BP-based iterative decoding is performed based on the binary expansion of the whole parity-check matrix. Various powerful RS codes can be used as the component codes for RS-SPC product codes, which gives a good performance for local decoding (decode a single component codeword). The proposed BP-based iterative decoding is a global decoding, and it achieves an error-correcting capability comparable to codes of large blocklengths. This two-phase d…
Based on the notion of supercodes, we propose a two-phase maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding (tpMLSD) algorithm for binary linear block codes in this work. The first phase applies the Viterbi algorithm backwardly to a trellis derived from the parity-check matrix of the supercode of the linear block code. Using the information retained from the first phase, the second phase employs the priority-first search algorithm to the trellis corresponding to the linear block code itself, which guarantees finding the ML decision. Simulations on Reed-Muller codes show that the proposed two-phase sch…
The belief propagation algorithm has been recognized in the information theory community as a soft-decision iterative decoding algorithm. It is the most powerful algorithm found so far for attacking hard optimization problems in channel decoding. Quantum mechanics is the foundation of modern physics with the time-independent Schrodinger equation being one of the most important equations. This paper shows that the equation can be derived from a generalized belief propagation algorithm. Such a connection on a mathematical basis might shed new insights into the foundations of quantum mechanics an…
This paper discusses bit-level soft decoding of triple-parity Reed-Solomon (RS) codes through automorphism permutation. A new method for identifying the automorphism groups of RS binary images is first developed. The new algorithm runs effectively, and can handle more RS codes and capture more automorphism groups than the existing ones. Utilizing the automorphism results, a new bit-level soft-decision decoding algorithm is subsequently developed for general $(n,n-3,4)$ RS codes. Simulation on $(31,28,4)$ RS codes demonstrates an impressive gain of more than 1 dB at the bit error rate of $10^{-…
We show that the binary Golay code is slightly more power efficient than the extended binary Golay code under maximum-likelihood (ML), hard-decision decoding. In fact, if a codeword from the extended code is transmitted, one cannot achieve a higher probability of correct decoding than by simply ignoring the 24th symbol and using an ML decoder for the non-extended code on the first 23 symbols. This is so, despite the fact that using that last symbol would allow one to sometimes correct error patterns with weight four. To our knowledge the worse performance of the extended Golay code has not bee…
A variety of low-density parity-check (LDPC) ensembles have now been observed to approach capacity with message-passing decoding. However, all of them use soft (i.e., non-binary) messages and a posteriori probability (APP) decoding of their component codes. In this paper, we show that one can approach capacity at high rates using iterative hard-decision decoding (HDD) of generalized product codes. Specifically, a class of spatially-coupled GLDPC codes with BCH component codes is considered, and it is observed that, in the high-rate regime, they can approach capacity under the proposed iterativ…
Recursive list decoding is considered for Reed-Muller (RM) codes. The algorithm repeatedly relegates itself to the shorter RM codes by recalculating the posterior probabilities of their symbols. Intermediate decodings are only performed when these recalculations reach the trivial RM codes. In turn, the updated lists of most plausible codewords are used in subsequent decodings. The algorithm is further improved by using permutation techniques on code positions and by eliminating the most error-prone information bits. Simulation results show that for all RM codes of length 256 and many subcodes …
We present novel decoding schemes for hard and soft decision decoding of block codes using the minimal weight codewords of the dual code. The decoding schemes will be described for cyclic codes where polynomials can be used, however, the modification for non-cyclic codes is possible and straight forward. The hard decision decoding calculates syndrome polynomials which are the product of the received polynomial with dual codewords. Proper cyclic shifts of these syndrome polynomials are obtained and the non-zero positions are counted componentwise for these shifts. The values of this counting ar…
We propose an improved soft-aided decoding scheme for product codes that approaches the decoding performance of conventional soft-decision TPD with only a 0.2 dB gap while keeping the complexity and internal decoder data flow similarly low as in hard decision decoders.
Ensemble models are widely used to solve complex tasks by their decomposition into multiple simpler tasks, each one solved locally by a single member of the ensemble. Decoding of error-correction codes is a hard problem due to the curse of dimensionality, leading one to consider ensembles-of-decoders as a possible solution. Nonetheless, one must take complexity into account, especially in decoding. We suggest a low-complexity scheme where a single member participates in the decoding of each word. First, the distribution of feasible words is partitioned into non-overlapping regions. Thereafter,…
We analyze the achievable information rates (AIRs) for coded modulation schemes with QAM constellations with both bit-wise and symbol-wise decoders, corresponding to the case where a binary code is used in combination with a higher-order modulation using the bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) paradigm and to the case where a nonbinary code over a field matched to the constellation size is used, respectively. In particular, we consider hard decision decoding, which is the preferable option for fiber-optic communication systems where decoding complexity is a concern. Recently, Liga \emph{et…
This paper investigates the error probability of a stochastic decision and the way in which it differs from the error probability of an optimal decision, i.e., the maximum a posteriori decision. This paper calls attention to the fact that the error probability of a stochastic decision with the a posteriori distribution is at most twice the error probability of the maximum a posteriori decision. It is shown that, by generating an independent identically distributed random sequence subject to the a posteriori distribution and making a decision that maximizes the a posteriori probability over the…
Reed-Solomon (RS) codes over GF$(2^m)$ have traditionally been the most popular non-binary codes in almost all practical applications. The distance properties of RS codes result in excellent performance under hard-decision bounded-distance decoding. However, efficient and implementable soft decoding for high-rate (about 0.9) RS codes over large fields (GF(256), say) continues to remain a subject of research with a promise of further coding gains. In this work, our objective is to propose and investigate $2^m$-ary codes with non-trivial binary trace codes as an alternative to RS codes. We deriv…
We consider probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) as a means of increasing the spectral efficiency of fiber-optic communication systems. In contrast to previous works in the literature, we consider probabilistic shaping with hard decision decoding (HDD). In particular, we apply the PAS recently introduced by Böcherer \emph{et al.} to a coded modulation (CM) scheme with bit-wise HDD that uses a staircase code as the forward error correction code. We show that the CM scheme with PAS and staircase codes yields significant gains in spectral efficiency with respect to the baseline scheme using a st…
In ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems with impulse radio (IR) modulation, the bandwidth is usually 1GHz or more. To process the received signal digitally, high sampling rate analog-digital-converters (ADC) are required. Due to the high complexity and large power consumption, monobit ADC is appropriate. The optimal monobit receiver has been derived. But it is not efficient to combat intersymbol interference (ISI). Decision feedback equalization (DFE) is an effect way dealing with ISI. In this paper, we proposed a algorithm that combines Viterbi decoding and DFE together for monobit rece…
This paper defines cyclic and minimal derivative descendants (DDs) of an extended cyclic code from the derivative of the Mattson-Solomon polynomials, respectively. First, it demonstrates that the cyclic DDs are the same extended cyclic code. It allows us to perform soft-decision decoding for extended cyclic codes based on their cyclic DDs. Then, it proves that the minimal DDs are equivalent codes. It also allows us to perform soft-decision decoding based on the minimal DDs with permutations. Simulation results show that our proposed derivative decoding can be close to the maximum likelihood de…
Nonlinear interference is modeled by a time-varying conditionally Gaussian channel. It is shown that approximating this channel with a time-invariant channel imposes considerable loss in the performance of channel decoding. An adaptive method to maintain decoding performance is described.
Orthogonality is a much desired property for MIMO coding. It enables symbol-wise decoding, where the errors in other symbol estimates do not affect the result, thus providing an optimality that is worth pursuing. Another beneficial property is a low complexity soft decision decoder, which for orthogonal complex MIMO codes is known for two transmit (Tx) antennas i.e. for the Alamouti code. We propose novel soft decision decoders for the orthogonal complex MIMO codes on three and four Tx antennas and extend the old result of maximal ratio combining (MRC) to cover all orthogonal codes up to four …
Non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have some advantages over their binary counterparts, but unfortunately their decoding complexity is a significant challenge. The iterative hard- and soft-reliability based majority-logic decoding algorithms are attractive for non-binary LDPC codes, since they involve only finite field additions and multiplications as well as integer operations and hence have significantly lower complexity than other algorithms. In this paper, we propose two improvements to the majority-logic decoding algorithms. Instead of the accumulation of reliability informa…
Belief propagation (BP) decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with various dynamic decoding schedules have been proposed to improve the efficiency of the conventional flooding schedule. As the ultimate goal of an ideal LDPC code decoder is to have correct bit decisions, a dynamic decoding schedule should be variable node (VN)-centric and be able to find the VNs with probable incorrect decisions and having a good chance to be corrected if chosen for update. We propose a novel and effective metric called conditional innovation (CI) which serves this design goal well. To make the most…
We propose a modified iterative bounded distance decoding of product codes. The proposed algorithm is based on exchanging hard messages iteratively and exploiting channel reliabilities to make hard decisions at each iteration. Performance improvements up to 0.26 dB are achieved.
We study the Dynamic Decode and Forward (DDF) protocol for a single half-duplex relay, single-antenna channel with quasi-static fading. The DDF protocol is well-known and has been analyzed in terms of the Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT) in the infinite block length limit. We characterize the finite block length DMT and give new explicit code constructions. The finite block length analysis illuminates a few key aspects that have been neglected in the previous literature: 1) we show that one dominating cause of degradation with respect to the infinite block length regime is the event of de…
Maximum-likelihood decoding is one of the central algorithmic problems in coding theory. It has been known for over 25 years that maximum-likelihood decoding of general linear codes is NP-hard. Nevertheless, it was so far unknown whether maximum- likelihood decoding remains hard for any specific family of codes with nontrivial algebraic structure. In this paper, we prove that maximum-likelihood decoding is NP-hard for the family of Reed-Solomon codes. We moreover show that maximum-likelihood decoding of Reed-Solomon codes remains hard even with unlimited preprocessing, thereby strengthening a …
We present a hardware architecture and algorithmic improvements for list SC decoding of polar codes. More specifically, we show how to completely avoid copying of the likelihoods, which is algorithmically the most cumbersome part of list SC decoding. The hardware architecture was synthesized for a blocklength of N = 1024 bits and list sizes L = 2, 4 using a UMC 90nm VLSI technology. The resulting decoder can achieve a coded throughput of 181 Mbps at a frequency of 459 MHz.
We classify the time complexities of three important decoding problems for quantum stabilizer codes. First, regardless of the channel model, quantum bounded distance decoding is shown to be NP-hard, like what Berlekamp, McEliece and Tilborg did for classical binary linear codes in 1978. Then over the depolarizing channel, the decoding problems for finding a most likely error and for minimizing the decoding error probability are also shown to be NP-hard. Our results indicate that finding a polynomial-time decoding algorithm for general stabilizer codes may be impossible, but this, on the other …
In this paper, the performance of quadratic residue (QR) codes of lengths within 100 is given and analyzed when the hard decoding, soft decoding, and linear programming decoding algorithms are utilized. We develop a simple method to estimate the soft decoding performance, which avoids extensive simulations. Also, a simulation-based algorithm is proposed to obtain the maximum likelihood decoding performance of QR codes of lengths within 100. Moreover, four important theorems are proposed to predict the performance of the hard decoding and the maximum-likelihood decoding in which they can explor…
In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with column-weight three to correct three errors when decoded using hard-decision message-passing decoding. Additionally, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for column-weight-four codes to correct three errors in four iterations of hard-decision message-passing decoding. We then give a construction technique which results in codes satisfying these conditions. We also provide numerical assessment of code performance via simulation results.
Extensive quantum error correction is necessary in order to scale quantum hardware to the regime of practical applications. As a result, a significant amount of decoding hardware is necessary to process the colossal amount of data required to constantly detect and correct errors occurring over the millions of physical qubits driving the computation. The implementation of a recent highly optimized version of Shor's algorithm to factor a 2,048-bits integer would require more 7 TBit/s of bandwidth for the sole purpose of quantum error correction and up to 20,000 decoding units. To reduce the deco…
An iterative algorithm is presented for soft-input-soft-output (SISO) decoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. The proposed iterative algorithm uses the sum product algorithm (SPA) in conjunction with a binary parity check matrix of the RS code. The novelty is in reducing a submatrix of the binary parity check matrix that corresponds to less reliable bits to a sparse nature before the SPA is applied at each iteration. The proposed algorithm can be geometrically interpreted as a two-stage gradient descent with an adaptive potential function. This adaptive procedure is crucial to the convergence beh…
Block codes are typically not used for fading channels as soft decision decoding is computationally intensive and hard decision decoding results in performance loss. In this paper we propose a diversity preserving hard decision decoding scheme for parity check codes (PCC) over Rayleigh fading channels. The proposed flip decoding scheme has linear complexity in the block length. Theoretical analysis and simulation results verify the correctness of the proposed detection scheme.
An unsupervised learning approach based on expectation maximization is proposed to obtain the parameters of a soft decision forward error correction decoding metric for probabilistic shaping. The algorithm depends only on the channel observations and does not require transmitted data.
Soft-decision decoding is NP-hard problem of great interest to developers of communication system. We present an efficient soft-decision decoding of linear block codes based on compact genetic algorithm (cGA) and compare its performance with various other decoding algorithms including Shakeel algorithms. The proposed algorithm uses the dual code in contrast to Shakeel algorithm that uses the code itself. Hence, this new approach reduces the decoding complexity of high rates codes. The complexity and an optimized version of this new algorithm is also presented and discussed.

In this paper, we use reinforcement learning to find effective decoding strategies for binary linear codes. We start by reviewing several iterative decoding algorithms that involve a decision-making process at each step, including bit-flipping (BF) decoding, residual belief propagation, and anchor decoding. We then illustrate how such algorithms can be mapped to Markov decision processes allowing for data-driven learning of optimal decision strategies, rather than basing decisions on heuristics or intuition. As a case study, we consider BF decoding for both the binary symmetric and additive wh…
We propose a novel soft-aided low-complexity decoder for product codes based on dynamic reliability scores and error-and-erasure decoding. We observe coding gains of up to 1.2 dB compared to conventional hard-decision decoders.
We present a new fast Chase decoding algorithm for binary BCH codes. The new algorithm reduces the complexity in comparison to a recent fast Chase decoding algorithm for Reed--Solomon (RS) codes by the authors (IEEE Trans. IT, 2022), by requiring only a single Koetter iteration per edge of the decoding tree. In comparison to the fast Chase algorithms presented by Kamiya (IEEE Trans. IT, 2001) and Wu (IEEE Trans. IT, 2012) for binary BCH codes, the polynomials updated throughout the algorithm of the current paper typically have a much lower degree. To achieve the complexity reduction, we build …
Error correction techniques traditionally focus on the co-design of restricted code-structures in tandem with code-specific decoders that are computationally efficient when decoding long codes in hardware. Modern applications are, however, driving demand for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC), rekindling interest in the performance of shorter, higher-rate error correcting codes, and raising the possibility of revisiting universal, code-agnostic decoders. To that end, here we introduce a soft-detection variant of Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) called Ordered Reli…
The recently-discovered polar codes are widely seen as a major breakthrough in coding theory. These codes achieve the capacity of many important channels under successive cancellation decoding. Motivated by the rapid progress in the theory of polar codes, we propose a family of architectures for efficient hardware implementation of successive cancellation decoders. We show that such decoders can be implemented with O(n) processing elements and O(n) memory elements, while providing constant throughput. We also propose a technique for overlapping the decoding of several consecutive codewords, th…
This work introduces a decoding strategy for binary self-dual codes possessing an automorphism of a specific type. The proposed algorithm is a hard decision iterative decoding scheme. The enclosed experiments show that the new decoding concept performs error correction beyond the upper bound for the code correction capability. Moreover, we prove that the requirements for the new algorithm hold for any binary self-dual code having an automorphism of the specific type, which makes decoding of this large group of codes possible.
Polar codes, as the first provable capacity-achieving error-correcting codes, have received much attention in recent years. However, the decoding performance of polar codes with traditional successive-cancellation (SC) algorithm cannot match that of the low-density parity-check (LDPC) or turbo codes. Because SC list (SCL) decoding algorithm can significantly improve the error-correcting performance of polar codes, design of SCL decoders is important for polar codes to be deployed in practical applications. However, because the prior latency reduction approaches for SC decoders are not applicab…
As a new joint source-channel coding scheme, the double polar (D-Polar) codes have been proposed recently. In this letter, a novel joint source-channel decoder, namely the joint successive cancellation list (J-SCL) decoder, is proposed to improve the decoding performance of the D-Polar codes. We merge the trellis of the source polar code and that of the channel polar code to construct a compound trellis. In this compound trellis, the joint source-channel nodes represent both of the information bits and the high-entropy bits. Based on the compound trellis, the J-SCL decoder is designed to recov…
In this paper we give a randomized reduction for the Rank Syndrome Decoding problem and Rank Minimum Distance problem for rank codes. Our results are based on an embedding from linear codes equipped with Hamming distance unto linear codes over an extension field equipped with the rank metric. We prove that if both previous problems for rank metric are in ZPP = RP$\cap$coRP, then we would have NP=ZPP. We also give complexity results for the respective approximation problems in rank metric.
In this work, we present a simplification and a corresponding hardware architecture for hard-decision recursive projection-aggregation (RPA) decoding of Reed-Muller (RM) codes. In particular, we transform the recursive structure of RPA decoding into a simpler and iterative structure with minimal error-correction degradation. Our simulation results for RM(7,3) show that the proposed simplification has a small error-correcting performance degradation (0.005 in terms of channel crossover probability) while reducing the average number of computations by up to 40%. In addition, we describe the firs…
