Divisor functions have attracted the attention of number theorists from Dirichlet to the present day. Here we consider associated divisor functions $c_j^{(r)}(n)$ which for non-negative integers $j, r$ count the number of ways of representing $n$ as an ordered product of $j+r$ factors, of which the first $j$ must be non-trivial, and their natural extension to negative integers $r.$ We give recurrence properties and explicit formulae for these novel arithmetic functions. Specifically, the functions $c_j^{(-j)}(n)$ count, up to a sign, the number of ordered factorisations of $n$ into $j$ square-free non-trivial factors. These functions are related to a modified version of the Möbius function and turn out to play a central role in counting the number of sum systems of given dimensions. \par Sum systems are finite collections of finite sets of non-negative integers, of prescribed cardinalities, such that their set sum generates consecutive integers without repetitions. Using a recently established bijection between sum systems and joint ordered factorisations of their component set cardinalities, we prove a formula expressing the number of different sum systems in terms of associated divisor functions.
The class of Lambert series generating functions (LGFs) denoted by $L_α(q)$ formally enumerate the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, $σ_α(n) = \sum_{d|n} d^α$, for all integers $n \geq 1$ and fixed real-valued parameters $α\geq 0$. We prove new formulas expanding the higher-order derivatives of these LGFs. The results we obtain are combined to express new identities expanding the generalized sum-of-divisors functions. These new identities are expanded in the form of sums of polynomially scaled multiples of a related class of divisor sums depending on $n$ and $α$.
We establish asymptotic formulae for various correlations involving general divisor functions $d_k(n)$ and partial divisor functions $d_l(n,A)=\sum_{q|n:q\leq n^A}d_{l-1}(q)$, where $A\in[0,1]$ is a parameter and $k,l\in\mathbb{N}$ are fixed. Our results relate the parameter $A$ to the lengths of arithmetic progressions in which $d_k(n)$ is uniformly distributed. As applications to additive divisor sums, we establish new lower bounds and a new equivalent condition for the conjectured asymptotic. We also prove a Tauberian theorem for general additive divisor sums.
We obtain the triple correlations for a truncated divisor sum related to primes. We also obtain the mixed correlations for this divisor sum when it is summed over the primes, and give some applications to primes in short intervals.
Euler discovered recurrence for divisor sum functions as a consequence of the pentagonal numbers theorem. With similar idea and also motivated by Ewell's work in 1977, we prove new recurrences for certain divisor sum functions and triangular numbers.
In this paper, we consider the fractional sum of the divisor functions. We can improve previous results considered by Bordellés \cite{Bo} and Liu-Wu-Yang \cite{LWY}.
We prove the analogue of an identity of Huard, Ou, Spearman and Williams and apply it to evaluate a variety of sums involving divisor functions in two variables. It turns out that these sums count representations of positive integers involving radicals.
In 1919, P. A. MacMahon studied generating functions for generalized divisor sums. In this paper, we provide a framework in which to view these generating functions in terms of Jacobi forms, and prove that they are quasi-modular forms.
By simple elementary method,we obtain with ease,a highly simple expression for the remainder term of the divisor problem and use it to obtain an Euler-Maclaurin analogue of summation involving divisor function. We also obtain a relation connecting the remainder term of the divisor problem and the remainders of approximate functional equations for Riemann zeta function and its square, for positive values of arguments.
In a recent paper, Rose proves that certain generalized sum-of-divisor functions are quasi-modular forms for some congruence subgroup and conjectures that these forms are quasi-modular for $Γ_1(n)$. Here, we prove this conjecture.
An algorithm is presented to compute isolated values of the divisor summatory function in O(n^(1/3)) time and O (log n) space. The algorithm is elementary and uses a geometric approach of successive approximation combined with coordinate transformation.
We consider the positive divisors of a natural number that do not exceed its square root, to which we refer as the {\it small divisors\/} of the natural number. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the arithmetic function that adds the small divisors of a natural number, and we consider its Dirichlet generating series.
This article establishes a new upper bound on the function $σ^{*}(n)$, the sum of all coprime divisors of $n$. The article concludes with two questions concerning this function.
Let $s(n):= \sum_{d\mid n,~d<n} d$ denote the sum of the proper divisors of $n$. It is natural to conjecture that for each integer $k\ge 2$, the equivalence \[ \text{$n$ is $k$th powerfree} \Longleftrightarrow \text{$s(n)$ is $k$th powerfree} \] holds almost always (meaning, on a set of asymptotic density $1$). We prove this for $k\ge 4$.
We give explicit bounds on sums of $d(n)^2$ and $d_4(n)$, where $d(n)$ is the number of divisors of $n$ and $d_4(n)$ is the number of ways of writing $n$ as a product of four numbers. In doing so we make a slight improvement on the upper bound for class numbers of quartic number fields.
In this series we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper is concerned with the precise input of the conjectural formula for the classical shifted convolution problem for divisor sums so as to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of length up to $T^2$ with divisor functions as coefficients.
We prove an upper bound for the exponential sum associated to a localized $k-$divisor function, i.e., the counting function of the number of ways to write a positive integer $n$ as a product of $k\ge 2$ positive integers, each of them belonging to a specified interval. In particular, this gives an estimate for the exponential sum for the $k-$divisor function, $d_k(n)$.
In a recent paper, Merca posed three conjectures on congruences for specific convolutions of a sum of odd divisor functions with a generating function for generalized $m$-gonal numbers. Extending Merca's work, we complete the proof of these conjectures.
In this series we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper begins the general study of what we call Type II sums which utilize a circle method framework and a convolution of shifted convolution sums to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of length up to $T^3$ with divisor functions as coefficients.
We work an analogue of a classical arithmetic problem over polynomials. More precisely, we study the fixed points $F$ of the sum of divisors function $σ: F_2[x] \mapsto F_2[x]$ (defined \emph{mutatis mutandi} like the usual sum of divisors over the integers) of the form $F := A^2 \cdot S$, $S$ square-free, with $ω(S) \leq 3$, coprime with $A$, for $A$ even, of whatever degree, under some conditions. This gives a characterization of $5$ of the $11$ known fixed points of $σ$ in $F_2[x]$
We show that the absolute convergence of a Ramanujan expansion does not guarantee the convergence of its real variable generalization, which is obtained by replacing the integer argument in the Ramanujan sums with a real number. We also construct a new Ramanujan expansion for the divisor function. While our expansion is amenable to a continuous and absolutely convergent real variable generalization, it only interpolates the divisor function locally on $\mathbb{R}$.
In this series of papers we examine the calculation of the $2k$th moment and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. The present paper completes the general study of what we call Type II sums which utilize a circle method framework and a convolution of shifted convolution sums to obtain all of the lower order terms in the asymptotic formula for the mean square along $[T,2T]$ of a Dirichlet polynomial of arbitrary length with divisor functions as coefficients.
Let $a\geq 1, b\geq 0$ and $k\geq 2$ be any given integers. It has been proven that there exist infinitely many natural numbers $m$ such that sum of divisors of $m$ is a perfect $k$th power. We try to generalize this result when the values of $m$ belong to any given infinite arithmetic progression $an+b$. We prove if $a$ is relatively prime to $b$ and order of $b$ modulo $a$ is relatively prime to $k$ then there exist infinitely many natural numbers $n$ such that sum of divisors of $an+b$ is a perfect $k$th power. We also prove that, in general, either sum of divisors of $an+b$ is not a perfec…
Let $s(n)=\sum_{d\mid n,~d<n} d$ denote the sum of the proper divisors of $n$. The second-named author proved that $ω(s(n))$ has normal order $\log\log{n}$, the analogue for $s$-values of a classical result of Hardy and Ramanujan. We establish the corresponding Erdős--Kac theorem: $ω(s(n))$ is asymptotically normally distributed with mean and variance $\log\log{n}$. The same method applies with $s(n)$ replaced by any of several other unconventional arithmetic functions, such as $β(n):=\sum_{p\mid n} p$, $n-ϕ(n)$, and $n+τ(n)$ ($τ$ being the divisor function).
Given a positive integer $n$ the $k$-fold divisor function $d_k(n)$ equals the number of ordered $k$-tuples of positive integers whose product equals $n$. In this article we study the variance of sums of $d_k(n)$ in short intervals and establish asymptotic formulas for the variance of sums of $d_k(n)$ in short intervals of certain lengths for $k=3$ and for $k \ge 4$ under the assumption of the Lindelöf hypothesis.
Let $\gcd(d_{1},\ldots,d_{k})$ be the greatest common divisor of the positive integers $d_{1},\ldots,d_{k}$, for any integer $k\geq 2$, and let $τ$ and $μ$ denote the divisor function and the Möbius function, respectively. For an arbitrary arithmetic function $g$ and for any real number $x>5$ and any integer $k\geq 3$, we define the sum $$ S_{g,k}(x) :=\sum_{n\leq x}\sum_{d_{1}\cdots d_{k}=n} g(\gcd(d_{1},\ldots,d_{k})) $$ In this paper, we give asymptotic formulas for $S_{τ,k}(x)$ and $S_{μ,k}(x)$ for $k\geq 3$.
We survey arithmetic and asymptotic properties of the alternating sum-of-divisors function $β$ defined by $β(p^a)=p^a-p^{a-1}+p^{a-2}-...+(-1)^a$ for every prime power $p^a$ ($a\ge 1$), and extended by multiplicativity. Certain open problems are also stated.
Let $x$ be a positive integer. We give an asymptotic result for $ω(\operatorname{lcm}(m,n))$ summed over all positive integers $m$ and $n$ with $mn \le x$. This answers an open question posed in a recent paper.
We prove there exist infinitely many odd integers $n$ for which there exists a pair of positive divisors $d_1, d_2>1$ of $(n^2+1)/2$ such that $$d_1+d_2=δn+(δ+2).$$ We prove the similar result for $\varepsilon=δ-2$ and $δ\equiv4, 6\pmod{8}$ using different approaches and methods.
Ramanujan gave a recurrence relation for the partition function in terms of the sum of the divisor function $σ(n)$. In 1885, J.W. Glaisher considered seven divisor sums closely related to the sum of the divisors function. We develop a calculus to associate a generating function with each of these divisor sums. This yields analogues of Ramanujan's recurrence relation for several partition-theoretic functions as well as $r_k(n)$ and $t_k(n)$, functions counting the number of ways of writing a number as a sum of squares (respectively, triangular) numbers. As by-products of this association, we ob…
We study the variance of sums of the $k$-fold divisor function $d_k(n)$ over sparse arithmetic progressions, with averaging over both residue classes and moduli. In a restricted range, we confirm an averaged version of a recent conjecture about the asymptotics of this variance. This result is closely related to moments of Dirichlet $L$-functions and our proof relies on the asymptotic large sieve.
In a recent paper, Lapkova uses a Tauberian theorem to derive the asymptotic formula for the divisor sum $\sum_{n \leq x} d( n (n+v))$ where $v$ is a fixed integer and $d(n)$ denotes the number of divisors of $n$. We reprove her result by following a suggestion of Hooley, namely investigating the relationship between this sum and the well-known sum $\sum_{n \leq x} d( n ) d (n+v)$. As such, we are able to furnish additional terms in the asymptotic formula.
Let $s(n)$ denote the sum of the proper divisors of the natural number $n$. We show that the number of $n \leq x$ such that $s(n)$ is a sum of two squares has order of magnitude $x/\sqrt{\log x}$, which agrees with the count of $n \leq x$ which are a sum of two squares. Our result confirms a special case of a conjecture of Erd{\H o}s, Granville, Pomerance and Spiro, who in a 1990 paper asserted that if $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathbb{N}$ has asymptotic density zero (e.g. if $\mathcal{A}$ is the set of $n \leq x$ which are a sum of two squares), then $s^{-1}(\mathcal{A})$ also has asymptotic densi…
We consider a problem posed by Shparlinski, of giving nontrivial bounds for rational exponential sums over the arithmetic function $τ(n)$, counting the number of divisors of $n$. This is done using some ideas of Sathe concerning the distribution in residue classes of the function $ω(n)$, counting the number of prime factors of $n$, to bring the problem into a form where, for general modulus, we may apply a bound of Bourgain concerning exponential sums over subgroups of finite abelian groups and for prime modulus some results of Korobov and Shkredov.
For a nonempty finite set $A$ of positive integers, let $\gcd\left(A\right)$ denote the greatest common divisor of the elements of $A$. Let $f\left(n\right)$ and $Φ\left(n\right)$ denote, respectively, the number of subsets $A$ of $\left\{1, 2, \ldots, n\right\}$ such that $\gcd\left(A\right) = 1$ and the number of subsets $A$ of $\left\{1, 2, \ldots, n\right\}$ such that $\gcd\left(A\cup\left\{n\right\}\right) =1$. Let $D\left(n\right)$ be the divisor sum of $f\left(n\right)$. In this article, we obtain partial sums of $f\left(n\right)$, $Φ\left(n\right)$ and $D\left(n\right)$. We also obtain…
We study the sum of divisors of the quadratic form $m_1^2+m_2^2+m_3^2$. Let $$S_3(X)=\sum_{1\le m_1,m_2,m_3\le X}τ(m_1^2+m_2^2+m_3^2).$$ We obtain the asymptotic formula $$S_3(X)=C_1X^3\log X+ C_2X^3+O(X^2\log^7 X),$$ where $C_1,C_2$ are two constants. This improves upon the error term $O_\varepsilon(X^{8/3+\varepsilon})$ obtained by Guo and Zhai.
In [arXiv:1504.07804], Keating, Rodgers, Roditty-Gershon and Rudnick established relationships of the mean-square of sums of the divisor function $d_k(f)$ over short intervals and over arithmetic progressions for the function field $\mathbb F_q[T]$ to certain integrals over the ensemble of unitary matrices. We consider similar problems leading to distributions over the ensemble of symplectic matrices. We also consider analogous questions involving convolutions of the von Mangoldt function.
A natural number $n$ is $y$-smooth if the greatest prime factor of $n$ does not exceed $y$. Let $s_{1}$ and $s_{2}$ are $y$-smooth numbers. We consider sums of smooth squares of the binary Titchmarsh divisor problem and give asymptotic formulae for $\sum_{s_{1}^{2}+s_{2}^{2}\le x}τ(s_{1}^{2}+s_{2}^{2}+1)$ for $(\log x)^{K}\le y<x^{\frac{1}{2}}$, where $K$ is large enough.
We prove new exact formulas for the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, $σ_α(x) := \sum_{d|x} d^α$. The formulas for $σ_α(x)$ when $α\in \mathbb{C}$ is fixed and $x \geq 1$ involves a finite sum over all of the prime factors $n \leq x$ and terms involving the $r$-order harmonic number sequences and the Ramanujan sums $c_d(x)$. The generalized harmonic number sequences correspond to the partial sums of the Riemann zeta function when $r > 1$ and are related to the generalized Bernoulli numbers when $r \leq 0$ is integer-valued. A key part of our new expansions of the Lambert series generating…
In a one-page fragment published with his lost notebook, Ramanujan stated two double series identities associated, respectively, with the famous Gauss Circle and Dirichlet Divisor problems. The identities contain an "extra" parameter, and it is possible that Ramanujan derived these identities with the intent of attacking these famous problems. Similar famous unsolved problems are connected with $f_K(n)$, the number of integral ideals of norm $n$ in an algebraic number field $K$. In this paper we establish Riesz sum identities containing an "extra" parameter and involving $f_K(n)$, or divisor f…
We prove an asymptotic formula for the sum $\sum_{n \leq N} d(n^2 - 1)$, where $d(n)$ denotes the number of divisors of $n$. During the course of our proof, we also furnish an asymptotic formula for the sum $\sum_{d \leq N} g(d)$, where $g(d)$ denotes the number of solutions $x$ in $\mathbb{Z}_d$ to the equation $x^2 \equiv 1 \mod d$.
Consider the divisor sum $\sum_{n\leq N}τ(n^2+2bn+c)$ for integers $b$ and $c$ which satisfy certain extra conditions. For this average sum we obtain an explicit upper bound, which is close to the optimal. As an application we improve the maximal possible number of $D(-1)$-quadruples.
We obtain asymptotic for the quantity $\int_0^1 \bigg|\sum_{n\le X}τ_k(n)e(nα)\bigg|dα$ where $τ_k(n) = \sum_{d_1\dots d_k = n} 1$. This follows from a quick application of the circle method. Along the way, we find minor arc bounds for the exponential sum with $τ_k$, and asymptotics for high moments of the Dirichlet kernel.
We study the algebra MD of generating function for multiple divisor sums and its connections to multiple zeta values. The generating functions for multiple divisor sums are formal power series in q with coefficients in Q arising from the calculation of the Fourier expansion of multiple Eisenstein series. We show that the algebra MD is a filtered algebra equipped with a derivation and use this derivation to prove linear relations in MD. The (quasi-)modular forms for the full modular group Sl_2(Z) constitute a sub-algebra of MD this also yields linear relations in MD. Generating functions of mul…
We obtain asymptotics with a power saving error term for $\int_0^1|\sum_{n\le X} d(n)e(nα)|^sdα$ for $s < 2$, where $d(n) = \sum_{d | n} 1$ is the divisor function. We also obtain such asymptotics for $\int_0^1|\sum_{n\le X}λ_f(n)e(nα)|^sdα$ for all $s > 0$. Our proof an iterative method with repeated applications of Jutila's variant of the circle method and Voronoi summation.
