The recent investigation of the gauge structure of extended geometry is generalised to situations when ancillary transformations appear in the commutator of two generalised diffeomorphisms. The relevant underlying algebraic structure turns out to be a tensor hierarchy algebra rather than a Borcherds superalgebra. This tensor hierarchy algebra is a non-contragredient superalgebra, generically infinite-dimensional, which is a double extension of the structure algebra of the extended geometry. We use it to perform a (partial) analysis of the gauge structure in terms of an $L_\infty$ algebra for extended geometries based on finite-dimensional structure groups. An invariant pseudo-action is also given in these cases. We comment on the continuation to infinite-dimensional structure groups. An accompanying paper deals with the mathematical construction of the tensor hierarchy algebras.
A compact formulation of the field-strengths, Bianchi identities and gauge transformations for tensor hierarchies in gauged maximal supergravity theories is given. A key role in the construction is played by the recently-introduced tensor hierarchy algebra.
We consider Chern-Simons actions of Abelian tensor hierarchy of $p$-form gauge fields in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity. Using conformal superspace formalism, we solve the constraints on the field strengths of the $p$-form gauge superfields in the presence of the tensor hierarchy. The solutions are expressed by the prepotentials of the $p$-form gauge superfields. We show the internal and superconformal transformation laws of the prepotentials. The descent formalism for the Chern-Simons actions is exhibited.
We consider Abelian tensor hierarchy in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in the conformal superspace formalism, where the so-called covariant approach is used to antisymmetric tensor fields. We introduce $p$-form gauge superfields as superforms in the conformal superspace. We solve the Bianchi identities under the constraints for the superforms. As a result, each of form fields is expressed by a single gauge invariant superfield. The action of superforms is shown with the invariant superfields. We also show the relation between the superspace formalism and the superconformal tensor c…
An explicitely gauge invariant polynomial action for massive gauge fields is proposed. For different values of parameters it describes massive Yang-Mills field, the Higgs-Kibble model, the model with spontaneously broken symmetry and two scalar mesons.
We present a hierarchy of gauged Grassmanian models in $4p$ dimensions, where the gauge field takes its values in the $2^{2p- 1}\times 2^{2p-1}$ chiral representation of SO(4p). The actions of all these models are absolutely minimised by a hierarchy of self-duality equations, all of which reduce to a single pair of coupled ordinary differential equations when subjected to $4p$ dimensional spherical symmetry.
We present a Bäcklund transformation (a discrete symmetry transformation) for the self-duality equations for supersymmetric gauge theories in N-extended super-Minkowski space ${\cal M}^{4|4N}$ for an arbitrary semisimple gauge group. For the case of an $A_1$ gauge algebra we integrate the transformation starting with a given solution and iterating the process we construct a hierarchy of explicit solutions.
With the goal of constructing the supersymmetric action for all fields, massless and massive, obtained by Kaluza-Klein compactification from type II theory or M-theory in a closed form, we embed the (Abelian) tensor hierarchy of p-forms in four-dimensional, N=1 superspace and construct its Chern-Simons-like invariants. When specialized to the case in which the tensors arise from a higher-dimensional theory, the invariants may be interpreted as higher-dimensional Chern-Simons forms reduced to four dimensions. As an application of the formalism, we construct the eleven-dimensional Chern-Simons f…
We construct the tensor hierarchy of generic, bosonic, 8-dimensional field theories. We first study the form of the most general 8-dimensional bosonic theory with Abelian gauge symmetries only and no massive deformations. This study determines the tensors that occur in the Chern-Simons terms of the (electric and magnetic) field strengths and the action for the electric fields, which we determine. Having constructed the most general Abelian theory we study the most general gaugings of its global symmetries and the possible massive deformations using the embedding tensor formalism, constructing …
We compute the complete 3- and 4-dimensional tensor hierarchies, i.e. sets of p-form fields, with $1\le p\le D$, which realize an off-shell algebra of bosonic gauge transformations. We show how these tensor hierarchies can be put on-shell by introducing a set of duality relations, thereby introducing additional scalars and a metric tensor. These so-called duality hierarchies encode the equations of motion of the bosonic part of the most general gauged supergravity theories in those dimensions, including the (projected) scalar equations of motion. We construct gauge-invariant actions that inclu…
IIB supergravity is reformulated with a manifest local USp(8) invariance that makes the embedding of five-dimensional maximal supergravities transparent. In this formulation the ten-dimensional theory exhibits all the 27 one-form fields and 22 of the 27 two-form fields that are required by the vector-tensor hierarchy of the five-dimensional theory. The missing 5 two-form fields must transform in the same representation as a descendant of the ten-dimensional `dual graviton'. The invariant E6(6) symmetric tensor that appears in the vector-tensor hierarchy is reproduced. Generalized vielbeine are…
We construct the tensor hierarchies of generic, bosonic, 5- and 6-dimensional field theories. The construction of the tensor hierarchy starts with the introduction of two tensors: the embedding tensor which tells us which vector is used for gauging and another tensor Z which tells us which vector is eaten by a 2-form. In dimensions five or more these two (deformation) tensors are in principle unrelated. Besides the embedding tensor and Z there can be further deformation tensors describing other couplings unrelated to (but compatible with) gauge symmetry. For each deformation tensor there appea…
We address the construction of manifest U-duality invariant generalized diffeomorphisms. The closure of the algebra requires an extension of the tangent space to include a tensor hierarchy indicating the existence of an underlying unifying structure, compatible with E_{11} and Borcherds algebras constructions. We begin with four-dimensional gauged maximal supergravity, and build a generalized Lie derivative that encodes all the gauge transformations of the theory. A generalized frame is introduced, which accommodates for all the degrees of freedom, including the tensor hierarchy. The generaliz…
In this paper we construct the supersymmetric tensor hierarchy of N=1, d=4 supergravity. We find some differences with the general bosonic construction of 4-dimensional gauged supergravities. The global symmetry group of N=1,d=4 supergravity consists of three factors: the scalar manifold isometry group, the invariance group of the complex vector kinetic matrix and the U(1) R-symmetry group. In contrast to (half)-maximal supergravities, the latter two symmetries are not embedded into the isometry group of the scalar manifold. We identify some components of the embedding tensor with Fayet-Iliopo…
We embed the Seiberg-Witten solution for the low energy dynamics of N=2 super Yang-Mills theory with an even number of massive hypermultiplets into the Whitham hierarchy. Expressions for the first and second derivatives of the prepotential in terms of the Riemann theta function are provided which extend previous results obtained by Gorsky, Marshakov, Mironov and Morozov. Checks in favour of the new equations involve both their behaviour under duality transformations and the consistency of their semiclassical expansions.
Exploiting the residual gauge freedom in the formulation of constrained KP hierarchy a number of new integrable systems are derived including hierarchies of Kundu-Eckhaus equation and higher order nonlinear extensions of Yajima-Oikawa and Melnikov hierarchy. In the multicomponent case such gauge freedom generates novel multicomponent as well as vector generalisations of the above systems, while the constrained modified KP hierarchy is found to yield another set of equations like derivative NLS, Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation and chen-Lee-Liu equation depending on the gauge choice.
The problem of the gauge hierarchy is brought up in a hypercomplex scheme for a U(1) field theory; in such a scheme a compact gauge group is deformed through a γ-parameter that varies along a non-compact internal direction, transverse to the U(1) compact one, and thus an additional SO(1,1) gauge symmetry is incorporated. This transverse direction can be understood as an extra internal dimension, which will control the spontaneous symmetry breakdown, and will allow us to establish a mass hierarchy. In this mechanism there is no brane separation to be stabilized as in the braneworld paradigm, ho…
The introduction of a non-abelian gauge group embedded into the rigid symmetry group G of a field theory with abelian vector fields and no corresponding charges, requires in general the presence of a hierarchy of p-form gauge fields. The full gauge algebra of this hierarchy can be defined independently of a specific theory and is encoded in the embedding tensor that determines the gauge group. When applied to specific Lagrangians, the algebra is deformed in an intricate way and in general will only close up to equations of motion. The group-theoretical structure of the hierarchy exhibits many …
We study a five dimensional SU(3) nonsupersymmetric gauge theory compactified on $M^4\times S^1/Z_2$ and discuss the gauge hierarchy in the scenario of the gauge-Higgs unification. Making use of calculability of the Higgs potential and a curious feature that coefficients in the potential are given by discrete values, we find two models, in which the large gauge hierarchy is realized, that is, the weak scale is naturally obtained from an unique large scale such as a grand unified theory scale or the Planck scale. The size of the Higgs mass is also discussed in each model. One of the models we f…
We propose a higher dimensional scenario to solve the gauge hierarchy problem. In our formulation, a crucial observation is that a supersymmetric structure is hidden in the 4d spectrum of any gauge invariant theories with compact extra dimensions and that the gauge symmetry breaking is directly related to the supersymmetry breaking.
We report on an attempt to solve the gauge hierarchy problem in the framework of higher dimensional gauge theories. Both classical Higgs mass and quadratically divergent quantum correction to the mass are argued to vanish. Hence the hierarchy problem in its original sense is solved. The remaining finite mass correction is shown to depend crucially on the choice of boundary condition for matter fields, and a way to fix it dynamically is presented. We also point out that on the simply-connected space $S^2$ even the finite mass correction vanishes.
We revisit the gauge hierarchy problem with the emphasis on the chiral property of the Standard Model. We present a model realizing a gauge hierarchy. Along this line, we also comment briefly on the "very light" axions and the upper bound on $θ_{\rm QCD}$.
In this work we explore an alternative to the central point of the Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario, namely, the particular nonfactorizable metric, in order to solve the hierarchy problem. From a topological viewpoint, we show that the exponential factor, crucial in the Randall-Sundrum model, appears in our approach, only due to the brane existence instead of a special metric background. Our results are based in a topological gravity theory via a non-standard interaction between scalar and non-abelian degrees of freedom and in calculations about localized modes of matter fields on the bran…
We propose a mechanism of Higgsless gauge symmetry breaking with a large mass hierarchy. We consider a 5D gauge theory on an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$. The gauge symmetry is broken by orbifolding and also nontrivial boundary conditions at fixed points. All 4D modes which survive at low energies are found to be localized around fixed points. Supersymmetry plays an important role in our mechanism. The tree-level unitarity in our model is briefly discussed.
Grand gauge-Higgs unification of five dimensional SU(6) gauge theory on an orbifold $S^1 / Z_2$ with localized gauge kinetic terms is discussed. The Standard model (SM) fermions on the boundaries and some massive bulk fermions coupling to the SM fermions are introduced. The number of the bulk fermions is reduced compared to the previous model, which reproduces the generation mixing of the SM fermions in addition to the SM fermion mass hierarchy by mild tuning the bulk masses and parameters of the localized gauge kinetic terms.
We introduce an infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebra which is an extension of the U-duality Lie algebra of maximal supergravity in D dimensions, for D between 3 and 7. The level decomposition with respect to the U-duality Lie algebra gives exactly the tensor hierarchy of representations that arises in gauge deformations of the theory described by an embedding tensor, for all positive levels p. We prove that these representations are always contained in those coming from the associated Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebra, and we explain why some of the latter representations are not included in t…
Tensor hierarchy algebras are infinite-dimensional generalisations of Cartan-type Lie superalgebras. They are not contragredient, exhibiting an asymmetry between positive and negative levels. These superalgebras have been a focus of attention due to the fundamental role they play for extended geometry. In the present paper, we examine tensor hierarchy algebras which are super-extensions of over-extended (often, hyperbolic) Kac--Moody algebras. They contain novel algebraic structures. Of particular interest is the extension of a over-extended algebra by its fundamental module, an extension that…
Tensor hierarchy algebras constitute a class of non-contragredient Lie superalgebras, whose finite-dimensional members are the "Cartan-type" Lie superalgebras in Kac's classification. They have applications in mathematical physics, especially in extended geometry and gauged supergravity. We further develop the recently proposed definition of tensor hierarchy algebras in terms of generators and relations encoded in a Dynkin diagram (which coincides with the diagram for a related Borcherds superalgebra). We apply it to cases where a grey node is added to the Dynkin diagram of a rank $r+1$ Kac-Mo…
We review the gauge hierarchy problem in the standard model. We discuss the meaning of the quadratic divergence in terms of the Wilsonian renormalization group. Classical scale symmetry, which prohibits dimensionful parameters in the bare action, could play a key role for the understanding of the origin of the electroweak scale. We discuss the scale-generation mechanism, i.e. scalegenesis in scale invariant theories. In this paper, we introduce a scale invariant extension of the SM based on a strongly interacting scalar-gauge theory. It is discussed that asymptotically safe quantum gravity pro…
In generalized Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with dilaton where bulk potential is generated by the antisymmetric tensor field the mass term of this field is introduced into the brane's Action. This permits to stabilize brane's position and hence to calculate the Planck/electroweek scales ratio which proves to depend non-analytically on the dilaton-antisymmetric tensor field coupling constant. The large observed number of mass hierarchy is achieved for the moderate value of this coupling constant of order 0,3. In the subsequent Paper II it is shown that the same approach in a higher dimensional th…
It is shown that the matrix KP hierarchy can yield new integrable equations in $(2+1)$-dimensions along with the corresponding Lax pair. For particular gauge choice this may result derivative and also a higher order nonlinear extension of the Devay-Stewartson equation (DSE),the higher order DSE being a higher dimensional generalisation of the Kundu- Eckhaus equation. Such gauge transformation is shown also to produce significant extensions to the constrained matrix KP system.
Using generalized field strength tensors for non-Abelian tensor gauge fields one can explicitly construct all possible Lorentz invariant quadratic forms for rank-4 non-Abelian tensor gauge fields and demonstrate that there exist only two linear combinations of them which form a gauge invariant Lagrangian. Together with the previous construction of independent gauge invariant forms for rank-2 and rank-3 tensor gauge fields this construction proves the uniqueness of early proposed general Lagrangian up to rank-4 tensor fields. Expression for the coefficients of the general Lagrangian is presente…
In free completely symmetric tensor gauge field theories on Minkowski space-time, all gauge invariant functions and Killing tensor fields are computed, both on-shell and off-shell. These problems are addressed in the metric-like formalisms.
We consider a braneworld model in the scalar-tensor gravity. In order to solve the gauge hierarchy problem in this model, our world should be confined on the positive tension brane rather than on the negative one. This is crucial to reproduce a correct Friedmann-like equation on the brane. Interestingly, it is found that the spacing of mass spectrum in this scenario is very tiny, but the light gravitons cannot be observed individually in colliders because of their sufficiently weak interaction with matter fields on the visible brane.
We suggest an extension of the gauge principle which includes tensor gauge fields. The extended non-Abelian gauge transformations of the tensor gauge fields form a new large group. On this group one can define field strength tensors, which are transforming homogeneously with respect to the extended gauge transformations. The invariant Lagrangian is quadratic in the field strength tensors and describes interaction of tensor gauge fields of arbitrary large integer spin $1,2,...$. It does not contain higher derivatives of the tensor gauge fields, and all interactions take place through three- and…
We suggest an extension of the Yang-Mills theory which includes non-Abelian tensor gauge fields. The invariant Lagrangian is quadratic in the field strength tensors and describes interaction of charged tensor gauge bosons of arbitrary large integer spin $1,2,...$. Non-Abelian tensor gauge fields can be viewed as a unique gauge field with values in the infinite-dimensional current algebra associated with compact Lie group. The full Lagrangian exhibits also enhanced local gauge invariance with double number of gauge parameters which allows to eliminate all negative norm states of the nonsymmetri…
We study the origin of fermion mass hierarchy and flavor mixing in a Lifshitz type extension of the standard model including an extra scalar field. We show that the hierarchical structure can originate from renormalizable interactions. In contrast to the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, the higher the dimension of associated operators, the heavier the fermion masses. Tiny masses for left-handed neutrinos are obtained without introducing right-handed neutrinos.
Invariant tensors play an important role in gauge theories, for example, in dualities of N=1 gauge theories. However, for theories with fields in representations larger than the fundamental, the full set of invariant tensors is often difficult to construct. We present a new approach to the construction of these tensors, and use it to find the complete set of invariant tensors of a theory of SO(3) with fields in the symmetric tensor representation.
We suggest an infinite-dimensional extension of the gauge transformations which includes non-Abelian tensor gauge fields. Extended gauge transformations of non-Abelian tensor gauge fields form a new large group which has natural geometrical interpretation it terms of extended current algebra associated with compact Lie group. We shall demonstrate that one can construct two infinite series of gauge invariant quadratic forms, so that a linear combination of them comprises the general Lagrangian. The general Lagrangian exhibits enhanced local gauge invariants with double number of gauge parameter…
For non-Abelian tensor gauge fields of the lower rank we have found an alternative expression for the field strength tensors, which transform homogeneously with respect to the complementary gauge transformations and allow us to construct the dual Lagrangian.
We point out that the N=4 supersymmetric KdV hierarchy, when written through the prepotentials of the bosonic chiral and antichiral N=2 supercurrents, exhibits a freedom related to the possibility to choose different gauges for the prepotentials. In particular, this implies that the Lax operator for the N=4 SKdV system and the associated realization of N=4 supersymmetry obtained in solv-int/9802003 are reduced to the previously known ones. We give the prepotential form of the `small' N=4 superconformal algebra, the second hamiltonian structure algebra of the N=4 SKdV hierarchy, for two choices…
We reconsider the gauge hierarchy problem from the viewpoint of effective field theories and a high-energy physics, motivated by the alternative scenario that the standard model holds up to a high-energy scale such as the Planck scale. The problem is restated as the question whether it is possible to construct a low-energy effective theory and the interaction with heavy particles, without spoiling the structure of a high-energy physics supported by an excellent concept. Based on this reinterpretation, we give a conjecture that theories with hidden fermionic symmetries can be free from the gaug…
A particular dispersive generalization of long water wave equation in $1+1$ dimensions, which is important in the study of matrix models without scaling limit, known as two--Boson (TB) equation, as well as the associated hierarchy has been derived from the zero curvature condition on the gauge group $SL(2,R)\otimes U(1)$. The supersymmetric extension of the two--Boson (sTB) hierarchy has similarly been derived from the zero curvature condition associated with the gauge supergroup $OSp(2|2)$. Topological algebras arise naturally as the second Hamiltonian structure of these classical integrable …
We study local algebras, which are structures similar to $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras concentrated in degrees $-1,0,1$, but without a product defined for pairs of elements at the same degree $\pm1$. To any triple consisting of a Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ with an invertible and symmetrisable Cartan matrix, a dominant integral weight of $\mathfrak{g}$ and an invariant symmetric bilinear form on $\mathfrak{g}$, we associate a local algebra satisfying a restricted version of associativity. From it, we derive a local Lie superalgebra by a commutator construction. Under certain conditions, we…
We calculate the leading-order scattering amplitude of one vector and two tensor gauge bosons in a recently proposed non-Abelian tensor gauge field theory and open superstring theory. The linear in momenta part of the superstring amplitude has identical Lorentz structure with the gauge theory, while its cubic in momenta part can be identified with an effective Lagrangian which is constructed using generalized non-Abelian field strength tensors.
We construct the theory of non-abelian gauge antisymmetric tensor fields, which generalize the standard Yang-MIlls fields and abelian gauge p-forms. The corresponding gauge group acts on the space of inhomogeneous differential forms and it is shown to be a supergroup. The wide class of generalized Chern-Simons actions is constructed.
We show that the gauge hierarchy problem can be solved in the framework of scalar-tensor theories of gravity very much in the same way as it is solved in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. Our solution involves a fine-tuning of the gravitational sector. However our mechanism does not require the introduction of extra-dimensions or new physics strongly coupled to the standard model in the low energy regime. We do introduce a new scalar field which is however coupled only gravitationally to regular matter. The physical reason for the splitting between the weak scale and the Planck scale is a violatio…
In this paper, from the $q$-gauge covariant condition we define the $q$-deformed Killing form and the second $q$-deformed Chern class for the quantum group $SU_{q}(2)$. Developing Zumino's method we introduce a $q$-deformed homotopy operator to compute the $q$-deformed Chern-Simons and the $q$-deformed cocycle hierarchy. Some recursive relations related to the generalized $q$-deformed Killing forms are derived to prove the cocycle hierarchy formulas directly. At last, we construct the $q$-gauge covariant Lagrangian and derive the $q$-deformed Yang-Mills equation. We find that the components of…
A systematic method is presented for the construction and classification of algebras of gauge transformations for arbitrary high rank tensor gauge fields. For every tensor gauge field of a given rank, the gauge transformation will be stated, in a generic way, via an ansatz that contains all the possible terms, with arbitrary coefficients and the maximum number of tensor gauge functions. The requirement for the closure of the algebra will prove to be restrictive, but, nevertheless, leave a variety of choices. Properly adjusting the values of the initial coefficients and imposing restrictions on…
In order to construct a massive tensor theory with a smooth massless limit, we apply the Batalin-Fradkin algorithm to the ordinary massive tensor theory. By introducing an auxiliary vector field all second-class constraints are converted into first-class ones. We find a gauge-fixing condition which produces a massive tensor theory of desirable property.
We show that a U(1) gauge theory defined in the configuration space for closed p-branes yields the gauge theory of a massless rank-(p+1) antisymmetric tensor field and the Stueckelberg formalism for a massive vector field.
We present an efficient method for finding the independent invariant tensors of a gauge theory. Our method uses a theorem relating invariant tensors and D-flat directions in field space. We apply our method to several examples-- SO(3) with symmetric tensors, SU(2) with a dimension 4 representation, and SU(3) with matter in the sextet-- and find the set of independent invariant tensors in these theories.
E8 X E8 heterotic string and M-theory, when appropriately compactified, can give rise to realistic, N=1 supersymmetric particle physics. In particular, the exact matter spectrum of the MSSM, including three right-handed neutrino supermultiplets, one per family, and one pair of Higgs-Higgs conjugate superfields is obtained by compactifying on Calabi-Yau manifolds admitting specific SU(4) vector bundles. These "heterotic standard models" have the SU(3)_{C} X SU(2)_{L} X U(1)_{Y} gauge group of the standard model augmented by an additional gauged U(1)_{B-L}. Their minimal content requires that th…
We discuss the different possibilities of constructing the various energy-momentum tensors for noncommutative gauge field models. We use Jackiw's method in order to get symmetric and gauge invariant stress tensors--at least for commutative gauge field theories. The noncommutative counterparts are analyzed with the same methods. The issues for the noncommutative cases are worked out.
Recently we introduced an extended vector bundle X on which non-Abelian tensor gauge fields realize a connection. Our aim here is to introduce interaction of these non-Abelian tensor gauge fields with fermions and bosons. We have found that there exist two series of gauge invariant forms describing this interaction. The linear sum of these forms comprises the general gauge invariant Lagrangian. Studying the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations we found that a particular linear combination of these forms exhibits enhanced symmetry which guarantees the conservation of the corresponding high-ra…
Motivated by the close connection of tensor models to the SYK model, we use representation theory to construct the complete set of gauge invariant observables for bosonic and fermionic tensor models. Correlation functions of the gauge invariant operators in the free theory are computed exactly. The gauge invariant operators close a ring. The structure constants of the ring are described explicitly. Finally, we construct a collective field theory description of the bosonic tensor model.
We use the BV quantization method for a theory with coupled tensor and vector gauge fields through a topological term. We consider in details the reducibility of the tensorial sector as well as the appearance of a mass term in the effective vectorial theory .
Covariant forms are given to a gauge theory of massive tensor field. This is accomplished by introducing another auxiliary field of scalar type to the system composed of a symmetric tensor field and an auxiliary field of vector type. The situation is compared to the case of the theory in which a tensor field describes a scalar ghost as well as an ordinary massive tensor. In this case only an auxiliary vector field is needed to give covariant expressions for the gauge theory.
We analyze the general covariant energy-momentum tensor of the gravitational system in genreal five-dimensional cosmological brane-world models. Then through calculating this energy-momentum for the cosmological generalization of the Randall-Sundrum model, which includes the original RS model as the static limit, we are able to show that the weakness of the gravitation on the "visible" brane is a general feature of this model. This is the origin of the gauge hierarchy from a gravitational point of view. Our results are also consistent with the fact that a gravitational system has vanishing tot…
