We review the gauge hierarchy problem in the standard model. We discuss the meaning of the quadratic divergence in terms of the Wilsonian renormalization group. Classical scale symmetry, which prohibits dimensionful parameters in the bare action, could play a key role for the understanding of the origin of the electroweak scale. We discuss the scale-generation mechanism, i.e. scalegenesis in scale invariant theories. In this paper, we introduce a scale invariant extension of the SM based on a strongly interacting scalar-gauge theory. It is discussed that asymptotically safe quantum gravity provides a hint about solutions to the gauge hierarchy problem.
Pecci-Quinn (PQ) symmetry breaking by perturbative dynamics would suffer from a hierarchy problem, just like the electroweak symmetry breaking in the standard model. The dynamics of the axion, associated with the PQ symmetry breaking, would also involve a triviality problem. We provide a paradigm to resolve those two problems potentially existing in the PQ symmetry breaking scenario, with keeping successful axion relaxation for the QCD strong CP phase. The proposed theory includes an axicolor dynamics with the axicolored fermions partially gauged by the QCD color, and is shown to be governed b…
We propose a model which accounts for the dynamical origin of the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB), directly linking to the mass generation of dark matter (DM) candidate and active neutrinos. The standard model (SM) is weakly charged under the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge symmetry, in conjunction with newly introduced three right-handed Majorana neutrinos and the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ Higgs. The model is built on the classical scale invariance, that is dynamically broken by a new strongly coupled sector, what is called the hypercolor (HC) sector, which is also weakly coupled to the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ g…
We consider scalegenesis, spontaneous scale symmetry breaking, by the scalar-bilinear condensation in $SU(N)$ scalar gauge theory. In an effective field theory approach to the scalar-bilinear condensation at finite temperature, we include the Polyakov loop to take into account the confinement effect. The theory with $N=3,4,5$ and $6$ is investigated, and we find that in all these cases the scale phase transition is a first-order phase transition. We also calculate the latent heat at and slightly below the critical temperature. Comparing the results with those obtained without the Polyakov loop…
We study a five dimensional SU(3) nonsupersymmetric gauge theory compactified on $M^4\times S^1/Z_2$ and discuss the gauge hierarchy in the scenario of the gauge-Higgs unification. Making use of calculability of the Higgs potential and a curious feature that coefficients in the potential are given by discrete values, we find two models, in which the large gauge hierarchy is realized, that is, the weak scale is naturally obtained from an unique large scale such as a grand unified theory scale or the Planck scale. The size of the Higgs mass is also discussed in each model. One of the models we f…
We propose a higher dimensional scenario to solve the gauge hierarchy problem. In our formulation, a crucial observation is that a supersymmetric structure is hidden in the 4d spectrum of any gauge invariant theories with compact extra dimensions and that the gauge symmetry breaking is directly related to the supersymmetry breaking.
We report on an attempt to solve the gauge hierarchy problem in the framework of higher dimensional gauge theories. Both classical Higgs mass and quadratically divergent quantum correction to the mass are argued to vanish. Hence the hierarchy problem in its original sense is solved. The remaining finite mass correction is shown to depend crucially on the choice of boundary condition for matter fields, and a way to fix it dynamically is presented. We also point out that on the simply-connected space $S^2$ even the finite mass correction vanishes.
We revisit the gauge hierarchy problem with the emphasis on the chiral property of the Standard Model. We present a model realizing a gauge hierarchy. Along this line, we also comment briefly on the "very light" axions and the upper bound on $θ_{\rm QCD}$.
We propose a mechanism of Higgsless gauge symmetry breaking with a large mass hierarchy. We consider a 5D gauge theory on an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$. The gauge symmetry is broken by orbifolding and also nontrivial boundary conditions at fixed points. All 4D modes which survive at low energies are found to be localized around fixed points. Supersymmetry plays an important role in our mechanism. The tree-level unitarity in our model is briefly discussed.
Grand gauge-Higgs unification of five dimensional SU(6) gauge theory on an orbifold $S^1 / Z_2$ with localized gauge kinetic terms is discussed. The Standard model (SM) fermions on the boundaries and some massive bulk fermions coupling to the SM fermions are introduced. The number of the bulk fermions is reduced compared to the previous model, which reproduces the generation mixing of the SM fermions in addition to the SM fermion mass hierarchy by mild tuning the bulk masses and parameters of the localized gauge kinetic terms.
We study the origin of fermion mass hierarchy and flavor mixing in a Lifshitz type extension of the standard model including an extra scalar field. We show that the hierarchical structure can originate from renormalizable interactions. In contrast to the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, the higher the dimension of associated operators, the heavier the fermion masses. Tiny masses for left-handed neutrinos are obtained without introducing right-handed neutrinos.
We reconsider the gauge hierarchy problem from the viewpoint of effective field theories and a high-energy physics, motivated by the alternative scenario that the standard model holds up to a high-energy scale such as the Planck scale. The problem is restated as the question whether it is possible to construct a low-energy effective theory and the interaction with heavy particles, without spoiling the structure of a high-energy physics supported by an excellent concept. Based on this reinterpretation, we give a conjecture that theories with hidden fermionic symmetries can be free from the gaug…
We show that the gauge hierarchy problem can be solved in the framework of scalar-tensor theories of gravity very much in the same way as it is solved in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. Our solution involves a fine-tuning of the gravitational sector. However our mechanism does not require the introduction of extra-dimensions or new physics strongly coupled to the standard model in the low energy regime. We do introduce a new scalar field which is however coupled only gravitationally to regular matter. The physical reason for the splitting between the weak scale and the Planck scale is a violatio…
It is suggested that the mechanism responsible for the resolution of the gauge hierarchy problem within the warped geometry framework can be generalized to provide a new explanation of the extremely tiny vacuum energy density rho_V suggested by recent observations. We illustrate the mechanism with some 5D examples in which the true vacuum energy is assumed to vanish, and rho_V is associated with a false vacuum energy such that rho_V^{1/4} ~ TeV^2/M_{Pl} ~ 10^{-3} eV, where M_{Pl} denotes the reduced Planck mass. We also consider a quintessence-like solution to the dark energy problem.
We discuss a possible scenario to solve the hierarchy problem, in which 4-dimensional bosonic fields with all possible integer spins, graviton, gauge boson and Higgs are unified in a framework of a gravity theory with extra dimensions. The Higgs is identified with the extra space component of the metric tensor. One-loop quantum effect on the Higgs mass-squared is explicitly calculated in a five dimensional gravity theory compactified on $S^1$. We obtain a finite calculable Higgs mass-squared without suffering from quadratic divergence, by virtue of general coordinate transformation invariance,…
We calculate one-loop radiative correction to the mass of Higgs identified with the extra space components of the gauge field in a six dimensional massive scalar QED compactified on a two-sphere. The radiatively induced Higgs mass is explicitly shown to be finite for arbitrary bulk scalar mass M. Furthermore, the remaining finite part also turns out to vanish, at least for the case of small M, thus suggesting that the radiatively induced Higgs mass exactly vanishes, in general. The non-zero "Kaluza-Klein" modes in the gauge sector are argued to have a Higgs-like mechanism and quantum mechanica…
The most general Lagrangian for a model with two U(1) gauge symmetries contains a renormalizable operator which mixes their gauge kinetic terms. Such kinetic mixing can be generated at arbitrarily high scales but will not be suppressed by large masses. In models whose supersymmetry (SUSY)-breaking hidden sectors contain U(1) gauge factors, we show that such terms will generically arise and communicate SUSY-breaking to the visible sector through mixing with hypercharge. In the context of the usual supergravity- or gauge-mediated communication scenarios with D-terms of order the fundamental scal…
A framework based on a class of abelian gauge symmetries is proposed in which the masses of only the third generation quarks and leptons arise at the tree level. The fermions of the first and second families receive their masses through radiative corrections induced by the new gauge bosons in the loops. It is shown that the class of abelian symmetries which can viably implement this mechanism are flavour non-universal in nature. Taking the all-fermion generalization of the well-known leptonic $L_μ-L_τ$ and $L_e - L_μ$ symmetries, we construct an explicit renormalizable model based on two $U(1)…
We propose a scenario that leads to hierarchical Yukawa couplings and degenerate sfermion masses at the same time, in the context of extra-dimensional models, which can be naturally embedded in a wide class of string models. The hierarchy of Yukawa couplings and degeneracy of sfermion masses can be realized thanks to superconformal gauge dynamics. The sfermion mass degeneracy is guaranteed by taking the superconformal fixed point to be family independent. In our scenario, the origin of Yukawa hierarchy is attributed to geometry of compactified dimensions and the consequent volume dependence of…
If the fundamental type-I string scale is of the order of few TeV, the problem of the gauge hierarchy is that of understanding why some dimensions transverse to our brane-world are so large. The technical aspect of this problem, as usually formulated, is `why quantum corrections do not modify drastically the masses and other parameters of the Standard Model'. We argue that within type-I perturbation theory, the technical hierarchy problem is solved (a) if all massless tadpoles cancel locally over distances of order the string length in the transverse space, or (b) if the massless fields with u…
We have recently proposed a setup of the "Domain-Wall Standard Model" in 5D spacetime, where all the Standard Model (SM) fields are localized in certain domains of the extra 5th dimension. Utilizing this setup, we attempt to solve the fermion mass hierarchy problem of the SM. The mass hierarchy can be naturally explained by suitably distributing the fermions in different positions along the extra dimension. Due to these different localization points, the effective 4D gauge couplings of Kaluza-Klein (KK) mode gauge bosons to the SM fermions become non-universal. As a result, our model is severe…
We study a five dimensional nonsupersymmetric SU(3) gauge theory compactified on $M^4\times S^1/Z_2$. The gauge hierarchy is discussed in the scenario of the gauge-Higgs unification. We present two models in which the large gauge hierarchy is realized, that is, the weak scale is naturally is obtained from an unique large scale such as a GUT and the Planck scale. We also study the Higgs mass in each model.
Recently a TeV-scale Supersymmetric Standard Model (TSSM) was proposed in which the gauge coupling unification is as precise (at one loop) as in the MSSM, and occurs in the TeV range. Proton stability in the TSSM is due to an anomaly free Z_3 X Z_3 discrete gauge symmetry, which is also essential for successfully generating neutrino masses in the desirable range. In this paper we show that the TSSM admits anomaly free non-Abelian discrete flavor gauge symmetries (based on a left-right product tetrahedral group) which together with a ``vector-like'' Abelian (discrete) flavor gauge symmetry supp…
The gauge hierarchy problem could find a solution within the scenario of asymptotic safety for quantum gravity. We discuss a "resurgence mechanism" where the running dimensionless coupling responsible for the Higgs scalar mass first decreases in the ultraviolet regime and subsequently increases in the infrared regime. A gravity induced large anomalous dimension plays a crucial role for the required "self-tuned criticality" in the ultraviolet regime beyond the Planck scale.
The possibility that the mass hierarchy is intimately associated with the compositeness level of the matters is proposed in supersymmetric gauge theory. This implies, for instance, that the preons constituting top quark consists of the ``prepreons'' binded by the same gauge force making the charm quark out of another preons. The exemplifying toy model illustrates how the hierarchy in the yukawa coupling constants in the up-quark sector is generated from the underlying gauge dynamics. It is also indicated that the incorporation of down-type quarks as elementary objects leads to unpleasant resul…
In this paper, we propose a possible new approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem without supersymmetry and without extra spacetime dimensions. This approach relies on the finiteness of string theory and the conjectured stability of certain non-supersymmetric string vacua. One crucial ingredient in this approach is the idea of ``misaligned supersymmetry'', which explains how string theories may be finite even without exhibiting spacetime supersymmetry. This approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem is therefore complementary to recent proposals involving both large and s…
We obtain the general inflationary solutions for the slab of five-dimensional AdS spacetime where the fifth dimension is an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$ and two three-branes reside at its boundaries, of which the Randall-Sundrum model corresponds to the static limit. The investigation of the general solutions and their static limit reveals that the RS model recasts both the cosmological constant problem and the gauge hierarchy problem into the balancing problem of the bulk and the brane cosmological constants.
In supersymmetric grand unified theories, the gauge hierarchy achieved by a fine-tuning in the superpotential can be violated in the presence of soft breaking terms. We examine this problem in Einstein supergravity with hidden-sector supersymmetry breaking. We show that the hierarchy is preserved if couplings of the hidden sector to visible-sector fields in the superpotential satisfy a certain requirement.
If the universe is (or a slice of) $AdS_5$ space with 3-branes, the 5-dimensional GUT scale on each brane can be indetified as the 5-dimensional Planck scale, but, the 4-dimensional Planck scale is generated from the low 4-dimensional GUT scale exponentially in our world. The 4-dimensional GUT scales and Planck scale are related to the 5-dimensional GUT scales and Planck scale by exponential factors, respectively. One of such scenarios was suggested by Randall and Sundrum recently. We give another scenario that the 4-dimensional Planck scale is generated from the low five-dimensional Planck sc…
The consequences of Gauge-Yukawa Unification (GYU) in supersymmetric unified models on low energy physics are analyzed. We find that the observed top-bottom mass hierarchy can be explained by supersymmetric GYU and different models can be experimentally distinguished if the top quark mass does not exceed the value $\sim 185$ GeV.
The matter spectrum of the MSSM, including three right-handed neutrino supermultiplets and one pair of Higgs-Higgs conjugate superfields, can be obtained by compactifying the E_{8} x E_{8} heterotic string and M-theory on Calabi-Yau manifolds with specific SU(4) vector bundles. These theories have the standard model gauge group augmented by an additional gauged U(1)_{B-L}. Their minimal content requires that the B-L gauge symmetry be spontaneously broken by a vacuum expectation value of at least one right-handed sneutrino. In previous papers, we presented the results of a quasi-analytic renorm…
A generalized Randall sundrum model in six dimensional bulk is studied in presence of non-flat 3-branes at the orbifold fixed points. The warp factors for this model is determined in terms of multiple moduli and brane cosmological constant. We show that the requirements of a vanishingly small cosmological constant on the visible brane along with non-hierarchical moduli, each with scale close to Planck length, lead to a scenario where the 3-branes can not have any intermediate scale and have energy scales either close to Tev or close to Planck scale. Such a scenario can address both the gauge h…
The idea of Gauge-Yukawa Unification (GYU) based on the principle of reduction of couplings is elucidated. We show how the observed top-bottom mass hierarchy can be explained in terms of supersymmetric GYU by considering an example of the minimal supersymmetric GUT.
A solution of the doublet-triplet splitting problem in the supersymmetric $SU(6)$ gauge theory is suggested. The `missing doublet' multiplet -- 175-plet of the $SU(6)$ group as well as the custodial $SU(2)_{cus}$ global symmetry play crucial role for achieving the doublet-triplet hierarchy. Two examples in which the doublet-triplet splitting occurs naturally are presented.
In this paper, a model is proposed to solve the gauge hierarchy problem. Beyond the standard model, we introduce an extra scalar field that non-minimally couples to gravity. The fundamental scale is set at weak scale and Planck scale emerges dynamically by a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism.
The hierarchy of equations of motion for equal-time Green functions in temporal gauge SU(N) Yang-Mills theory is truncated using an expansion in terms of connected Green functions. A second hierarchy of constraint equations arises from Gauss law and can be truncated in a similar way. Within this approximation scheme we investigate SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on a torus in 2+1 spacetime dimensions in a finite basis of plane wave states and focus on infrared and ultraviolet properties of the approach. We study the consequences of restoring the hierarchy of Gauss law constraints and of different mome…
A mass of the Higgs boson close to 126 GeV may give a hint that the standard model of particle physics is valid up to the Planck scale. We discuss perspectives for the solution of the gauge hierarchy problem at high scales. Scenarios with an ultraviolet fixed point have predicted a Higgs boson mass very close to 126 GeV if the fixed point value of the quartic scalar coupling is small. In this case the top quark pole mass should be close to 172 GeV.
The hierarchy in the Yukawa couplings may be the result of a gauged horizontal $U(1)_H$ symmetry. If the mixed anomalies of the Standard Model gauge group with $U(1)_H$ are cancelled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism, a relation between the gauge couplings, the Yukawa couplings and the $μ$-term arises. Assuming that at a high energy scale $g_3^2=g_2^2={5\over3}g_1^2$ and $(m_e m_μm_τ)/(m_d m_s m_b)\sim λ$ (where $λ$ is of the order of the Cabibbo angle), the $U(1)_H$ symmetry solves the $μ$-problem with $μ\simλm_{3/2}$.
We suggest a new cosmological scenario which naturally guarantees the smallness of scalar masses and VEVs, without invoking supersymmetry or any other (non-gravitationaly coupled) new physics at low energies. In our framework, the scalar masses undergo discrete jumps due to nucleation of closed branes during (eternal) inflation. The crucial point is that the step size of variation decreases in the direction of decreasing scalar mass. This scenario yields exponentially large domains with a distribution of scalar masses, which is sharply peaked around a hierarchically small value of the mass. Th…
We consider a matrix space based on the spin degree of freedom, describing both a Hilbert state space, and its corresponding symmetry operators. Under the requirement that the Lorentz symmetry be kept, at given dimension, scalar symmetries, and their representations are determined. Symmetries are flavor or gauge-like, with fixed chirality. After spin 0, 1/2, and 1 fields are obtained in this space, we construct associated interactive gauge-invariant renormalizable terms, showing their equivalence to a Lagrangian formulation, using as example the previously studied (5+1)-dimensional case, with …
A model that gives family gauge bosons with an inverted mass hierarchy is proposed, stimulated by Sumino's cancellation mechanism for the QED radiative correction to the charged lepton masses. The Sumino mechanism cannot straightforwardly be applied to SUSY models because of the non-renormalization theorem. In this talk, an alternative model which is applicable to a SUSY model is proposed. It is essential that family gauge boson masses $m(A_i^j)$ in this model is given by an inverted mass hierarchy $m(A_i^i) \propto 1/\sqrt{m_{ei}}$, in contrast to $m(A_i^i) \propto \sqrt{m_{ei}}$ in the origi…
In the SM gauge symmetries and fermion content of neutrinos, charged leptons and quarks, we study the effective four-fermion operators of Einstein-Cartan type and their contributions to the Schwinger-Dyson equations of fermion self-energy functions. The study is motivated by the speculation that these four-fermion operators are probably originated due to the quantum gravity that provides the natural regularization for chiral-symmetric gauge field theories. In the chiral-gauge symmetry breaking phase, as to achieve the energetically favorable ground state, only the top-quark mass is generated v…
An old idea for explaining the hierarchy is strong gauge dynamics. We show that such dynamics {\it also} stabilises the moduli in $M$ theory compactifications on manifolds of $G_2$-holonomy {\it without} fluxes. This gives stable vacua with softly broken susy, grand unification and a distinctive spectrum of TeV and sub-TeV sparticle masses.
In this paper, an alternative model which is applicable to a SUSY model is proposed. It is essential that family gauge boson masses $m(A_i^j)$ in this model is given by an inverted mass hierarchy $m(A_i^i) \propto 1/\sqrt{m_{ei}}$, in contrast to $m(A_i^i) \propto \sqrt{m_{ei}}$ in the orig…
In the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model with seesaw neutrino masses we show how R-parity can emerge naturally as a discrete gauge symmetry. The same discrete symmetry explains the smallness of the μ-term (the Higgsino mass parameter) via the Giudice--Masiero mechanism. The discrete gauge anomalies are cancelled by a discrete version of the Green--Schwarz mechanism. The simplest symmetry group is found to be Z_4 with a charge assignment that is compatible with grand unification. Several other Z_N gauge symmetries are found for N=10,12,18,36 etc, with some models employing discrete anomaly …
We show that in the Randall-Sundrum model the Casimir energy of bulk gauge fields (or any of their supersymmetric relatives) has contributions that depend logarithmically on the radion. These contributions satisfactorily stabilize the radion, generating a large hierarchy of scales without fine-tuning. The logarithmic behaviour can be understood, in a 4D holographic description, as the running of gauge couplings with the infrared cut-off scale.
We generalize to string theory a construction, originally proposed in field theory, that generates a hierarchy in the splittings between members of super-multiplets in various sectors of the theory.
We examine a class of gauge theories obtained by projecting out certain fields from an N=4 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory. These theories are non-supersymmetric and in the large N limit are known to be conformal. Recently it was proposed that the hierarchy problem could be solved by embedding the standard model in a theory of this kind with finite N. In order to check this claim one must find the conformal points of the theory. To do this we calculate the one-loop beta functions for the Yukawa and quartic scalar couplings. We find that with the beta functions set to zero the one-loop quadra…
A mass Hierarchy of magnitude O(10^16) GeV separates the gravitational and electroweak interactions. Traditional proposed resolutions of this anomaly have included supersymmetric theories (most notably, the MSSM and ESSM) and string theory. However, energiers at which supersymmetric particles are expected to appear are not accessible to experiment, and string theory is only testable at around M_pl. A novel idea involves introducing extra dimensions into a Minkowski space-time to reduce the effective separation between the gauge and gravitational couplings. Theoretical developments of the so-ca…
We explore the gauge hierarchy problem within the framework of supersymmetric $SU(3)_c \times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ with a minimal set of higgs supermultiplets. Imposition of a suitable discrete (alternatively $R$) symmetry `prevents' the electroweak higgs doublets from becoming superheavy through renormalizable couplings. A full resolution of the problem requires consideration of the non-renormalizable couplings which play an essential role. Other key differences from the minimal supersymmetric $SU(5)$ model include the fact that the proton is stable and that an effective $5 + \bar{5}$ supe…
Grand gauge-Higgs unification of five dimensional SU(6) gauge theory on an orbifold S^1/Z_2 with localized gauge kinetic terms is discussed. The Standard model (SM) fermions on one of the boundaries and some massive bulk fermions coupling to the SM fermions on the boundary are introduced, so that they respect an SU(5) symmetry structure. The SM fermion masses including top quark are reproduced by mild tuning the bulk masses and parameters of the localized gauge kinetic terms. Gauge coupling universality is not guaranteed by the presence of the localized gauge kinetic terms and it severely cons…
Within a supersymmetric unified framework we explore the resolution of the gauge hierarchy problem taking account of the non-renormalizable terms in the superpotential. For $[SU(3)]^3$ supplemented by a discrete R parity, we find the remarkable property that the vacuum configuration corresponding to the correct gauge symmetry breaking remains flat (in the supersymmetric limit) to all orders in $M^{-1}_{Planck}$. The grand unification scale arises from an interplay of the Planck and supersymmetry breaking scales. An `internal' $Z_3\otimes Z_4$ symmetry protects a pair of electroweak doublets fr…
We argue that the familiar gauge hierarchy between the fundamental Planck scale M_{Pl} and the electroweak scale M_{W}, can be naturally explained in higher dimensional theories with relatively large radii (R_c > 1/M_{Pl}) extra dimensions. In particular, we show that it is possible that the electroweak Higgs mass at high energies is of the order of M_{Pl}, but radiative corrections drive it to an infrared stable fixed-point $\sim M_{W}$ at low energies thus inducing a large hierarchy without any fine tuning of parameters.
It is shown that a natural gauge hierarchy and doublet-triplet splitting can be achieved in SO(10) using the Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism. Artificial cancellations (fine-tuning) and arbitrary forms of the superpotential are avoided, the superpotential being the most general compatible with a symmetry. It is shown by example that the Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism can be protected against the effects of higher-dimension operators possibly induced by Planck-scale physics. Natural implementation of the mechanism leads to an automatic Peccei-Quinn symmetry. The same local symmetries that would prote…
We discuss a supersymmetric grand unified model which has gauge group SU(5) $\times$ SU(5) $\times$ SU(5), with matter fields transforming asymmetrically under different gauge SU(5) groups. We observe that the gauge structure of the model leads to approximate texture zero structures in fermion mass matrices and a natural hierarchy in the Yukawa couplings. The proton lifetime is estimated to be larger than $10^{34}$ years in this model. As in more conventional supersymmetric GUT models with product gauge groups, this model possesses no tensor fields with rank higher than 2, so that it might ari…
Dynamical quasi-localization of matter fields in extra dimension is an elegant mechanism to generate hierarchical 4-dimensional Yukawa couplings. We point out that a bulk matter field whose zero mode is quasi-localized can give a large Kaluza-Klein threshold correction to low energy gauge couplings, which is generically of the order of ln (Yukawa)/8pi^2, so it can significantly affect gauge coupling unification. We compute such threshold corrections in generic 5-dimensional theories compactified on S^1/Z_2 X Z_2, and apply the result to grand unified theories on orbifold generating small Yukaw…
A quantum field theory formalism is reviewed that leads to a self-consistent, finite quantum gravity, Yang-Mills and Higgs theory, which is unitary and gauge invariant to all orders of perturbation theory. The gauge hierarchy problem is solved due to the exponential damping of the Higgs self-energy loop graph for energies greater than a scale $Λ_H\leq 1$ TeV. The cosmological constant problem is solved by introducing a fundamental quantum gravity scale, $Λ_G\leq 10^{-4}$ eV, above which the virtual contributions to the vacuum energy density coupled to gravity are exponentially suppressed, yiel…
Grand gauge-Higgs unification of five dimensional $SU(6)$ gauge theory on an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$ is discussed. The Standard model (SM) fermions are introduced on one of the boundaries and some massive bulk fields are also introduced so that they couple to the SM fermions through the mass terms on the boundary. Integrating out the bulk fields generates the SM fermion masses with exponentially small bulk mass dependences. The SM fermion masses except for top quark are shown to be reproduced by mild tuning the bulk masses. One-loop Higgs potential is calculated and it is shown that the electroweak…
It has been shown that the Dimopoulos-Wilczek (or missing-VEV) mechanism for doublet-triplet splitting can be implemented in $SU(5) \times SU(5)$ models, which requires no adjoint Higgs fields. This is an advantage from the point of view of string theory construction. Here the stability of the gauge hierarchy is examined in detail, and it is shown that it can be guaranteed much more simply than in $SO(10)$. In fact a $Z_2$ symmetry ensures the stability of the DW form of the expectation values to all orders in GUT-scale VEVs. It is also shown that models based on $SO(10) \times SU(5)$ have the…
