We consider scalegenesis, spontaneous scale symmetry breaking, by the scalar-bilinear condensation in $SU(N)$ scalar gauge theory. In an effective field theory approach to the scalar-bilinear condensation at finite temperature, we include the Polyakov loop to take into account the confinement effect. The theory with $N=3,4,5$ and $6$ is investigated, and we find that in all these cases the scale phase transition is a first-order phase transition. We also calculate the latent heat at and slightly below the critical temperature. Comparing the results with those obtained without the Polyakov loop effect, we find that the Polyakov effect can considerably increase the latent heat in some cases, which would mean a large increase in the energy density of the gravitational waves background, if it were produced by the scale phase transition.
We discuss an attempt to understand confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in a 4-dimensional non-supersymmetric gauge theory using S-duality in type IIB string theory. The electric theory is a USp(2n) gauge theory and its magnetic dual is argued to be an SO(2n) or SO(2n-1) gauge theory. These theories are obtained as the low-energy effective theory of O3-D3bar systems in type IIB string theory, which are related by S-duality. Confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in the USp(2n) gauge theory are caused by the condensation of scalar fields in the magnetic dual description, which is c…
We propose a gauge-invariant description for the Higgs mechanism by which a gauge boson acquires the mass. We do not need to assume spontaneous breakdown of gauge symmetry signaled by a non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of the scalar field. In fact, we give a manifestly gauge-invariant description of the Higgs mechanism in the operator level, which does not rely on spontaneous symmetry breaking. For concreteness, we discuss the gauge-Higgs models with $U(1)$ and $SU(2)$ gauge groups explicitly. This enables us to discuss the confinement-Higgs complementarity from a new perspective.
We demonstrate that $SO(N_{c})$ gauge theories with matter fields in the vector representation confine due to monopole condensation and break the $SU(N_{F})$ chiral symmetry to $SO(N_{F})$ via the quark bilinear. Our results are obtained by perturbing the ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric theory with anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking.
We consider the heavy quark limit of Coulomb gauge QCD, with the truncation of the Yang-Mills sector to include only (dressed) two-point functions. We find that the rainbow-ladder approximation to the gap and Bethe-Salpeter equations is nonperturbatively exact and moreover, we provide a direct connection between the temporal gluon propagator and the quark confinement potential. Further, we show that only bound states of color singlet quark-antiquark (meson) and quark-quark (SU(2) baryon) pairs are physically allowed.
All colored particles including dynamical quarks and gluons are confined if the color confinement criterion proposed by Kugo and Ojima is satisfied. The criterion was obtained under the gauge fixing of the Lorenz type. However, it was pointed out that the Kugo-Ojima criterion breaks down for the Maximal Abelian gauge, which is quite strange in view of the fact that quark confinement has been verified according to the dual superconductivity caused by magnetic monopole condensations. In order to make a bridge between color confinement due to Kugo and Ojima and the dual superconductor picture for…
We derive a gauge-invariant low-energy effective model of the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. We find that the effective gluon propagator belongs to the Gribov-Stingl type, irrespective of the gauge choice. In the maximally Abelian gauge, especially, we demonstrate that the model exhibits both quark confinement and gluon confinement: the Wilson loop average has area law and the Schwinger function violates reflection positivity. Moreover, we give a formula for the string tension calculable from the gluon propagator of the gauge-invariant field strength and gives a good estimate for the string tension.…
We study the low-energy dynamics in three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ exceptional gauge theories with matters in a fundamental representation, especially focusing on confinement phases and on a quantum structure of the Coulomb branch in the moduli space of vacua. We argue that the confinement phases of these exceptional gauge theories have a single Coulomb branch. The 3d s-confinement phases for the exceptional gauge groups are associated with quantum-deformed moduli spaces of the corresponding 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ exceptional gauge theories.
We propose a novel description for the Higgs mechanism by which a gauge boson acquires the mass. We do not assume spontaneous breakdown of gauge symmetry signaled by a non-vanishing vacuum expectation value of the scalar field. In fact, we give a manifestly gauge-invariant description of the Higgs mechanism in the operator level, which does not rely on spontaneous symmetry breaking. This enables us to discuss the confinement-Higgs complementarity from a new perspective. The "Abelian" dominance in quark confinement of the Yang-Mills theory is understood as a consequence of the gauge-invariant H…

In this talk we want to discuss the color confinement criterion which guarantees confinement of all colored particles including dynamical quarks and gluons. The most well-known criterion is the Kugo-Ojima color confinement criterion derived in the Lorenz gauge. However, it was pointed out that the Kugo-Ojima criterion breaks down for the Maximal Abelian gauge in which quark confinement has been verified according to the dual superconductivity caused by magnetic monopole condensations. We give the color confinement criterion based on the restoration of the residual local gauge symmetry which ca…
We elaborate on s-confinement phases in three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theory, especially focusing on the $SU(N)$ and $USp(2N)$ gauge theories with anti-symmetric tensors and (anti-)fundamental matters. This will elucidate a quantum structure of the Coulomb moduli space of vacua. We stress the importance of so-called dressed Coulomb branch operators for describing these s-confinement phases. The 3d s-confinement phases are highly richer than the 4d ones since there is no chiral anomaly constraint on the matter contents.
We show that a criterion for confinement, based on the BRST invariance, holds in four dimensions, by solving a non-Abelian gauge theory with a set of exact solutions. The confinement condition we consider was obtained by Kugo and Ojima some decades ago. The current understanding of gauge theories permits us to apply the techniques straightforwardly for checking the validity of this criterion. In this way, we are able to show that the non-Abelian gauge theory is confining and that confinement is rooted in the BRST invariance and asymptotic freedom.
The confinement problem is studied using the thick center vortex model. It is shown that the $SU(3)$ Cartan sub algebra of the decomposed $G(2)$ gauge theory can play an important role in the confinement. The Casimir eigenvalues and ratios of the $G(2)$ representations are obtained using its decomposition to the $SU(3)$ subgroups. This leads to the conjecture that the $SU(3)$ subgroups also can explain the $G(2)$ properties of the confinement. The thick center vortex model for the $SU(3)$ subgroups of the $G(2)$ gauge theory is applied without the domain modification. Instead, the presence of …
Gauge-independent transition separating confinement and Higgs phases in lattice SU(2) gauge theory with a scalar field in the fundamental representation
A generalization of the Wilson loop area-law criterion is proposed, which is applicable to gauge theories with matter in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. This new criterion, like the area law, is stronger than the statement that asymptotic particle states are massive color singlets, which holds even for theories described by the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism.
We review the physics of confinement based on non-Abelian dual superconductor picture, relying on exact solutions in N=2 supersymmetric QCD and based on the recent developments in our understanding of non-Abelian vortices and monopoles. The non-Abelian monopoles, though they are basically just the 't Hooft-Polyakov SU(2) monopoles embedded in various corners of the larger gauge group, require flavor symmetry in an essential way for their very existence. The phenomenon of flavor-color-flavor separation characterizes the multiple roles flavor symmetry plays in producing quantum-mechanical non-Ab…
We present various confinement phases of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ $Spin(N)$ gauge theories with vector and spinor matters. The quantum Coulomb branch of the moduli space of vacua is drastically changed when the rank of the gauge group and the matter contents are changed. In many examples, the Coulomb branch is one- or two-dimensional but its interpretation varies. In some examples, the Coulomb branch becomes three-dimensional and we need to introduce a "dressed" Coulomb branch operator.
Using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator $\Slash D=γ^μD^μ$, we develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion and projection of the QCD operators such as the Wilson loop and the Polyakov loop. With this method, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD Monte Carlo calculation on $6^4$ at $β$=5.6. Even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking, we find that the Wilson loop obeys the area law, and the slope parameter corresponding to the string tension or the confinement …
We investigate the relevant gluon-momentum region for confinement in lattice QCD on $16^4$ at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0, based on the Fourier expansion. We find that the string tension $σ$, i.e., the confining force, is almost unchanged even after removing the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the confinement property originates from the low-momentum gluon component below 1.5GeV, which is the upper limit to contribute to $σ$. In the relevant region, smaller gluon momentum component is more important for confinement. Next, we develop a manifestly gauge-covarian…
SU(3) gauge theory in the nonlinear gauge of the Curci--Ferrari type is studied. In the low-energy region, ghost condensation and subsequent gauge field condensation can happen. The latter condensation makes classical gauge fields massive. If the color electric potential with string is chosen as the classical gauge field, it produces the static potential with the linear potential. We apply this static potential to the three-quark system, and show, different from the $Y$-type potential, infrared divergence remains in the $Δ$-type potential. The color electric flux is also studied, and show that…
In this talk, first, we show that the color $N$-dependent area law falloffs of the double-winding Wilson loop averages for the $SU(N)$ lattice gauge model are reproduced from the $Z_N$ lattice Abelian gauge model due to the center group dominance in quark confinement. Next, we discuss lattice gauge-scalar models which allow analytic continuation for gauge invariant operators between confinement region and Higgs region. Applying the cluster expansion, we try to understand non-trivial contribution from scalar field in quark confinement mechanism. In order to understand quark confinement further,…
In this thesis we review the Seiberg-Witten solution of four dimensional N=2 gauge theories, the six-dimensional construction of these models recently proposed by Gaiotto and the BPS quiver technique for the determination of the BPS spectrum of N=2 theories. We then study how these recent developments allow to better understand nonperturbative aspects such as confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in the N=1 theories obtained starting from N=2 SQCD and adding a mass term for the chiral multiplet in the adjoint of the gauge group. We find an unusual realization of the 't Hooft-Mandelstam m…
The infrared structure of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is studied by means of lattice gauge simulations using a new constrained cooling technique. This method reduces the action while all Polyakov lines on the lattice remain unchanged. In contrast to unconstrained cooling, quark confinement is still intact. A study of the Hessian of the Yang-Mills action shows that low action (semi-) classical configurations can be achieved, with a characteristic splitting between collective modes and higher momentum modes. Besides confinement, the semiclassical configurations also support the topological susceptib…
Gauge field configuration for a magnetic monopole and its dual configuration are studied in SU(2) gauge theory. We present a relation between the monopole field and its dual field. Since these fields can become massive, their massive Lagrangians are derived. In the dual case, an additional term appears. We show this term is necessary to produce a linear potential between a monopole charge and an antimonopole charge.
The properties of elementary particles are encoded in their respective propagators and interaction vertices. For a SU(2) gauge theory coupled to a doublet of fundamental complex scalars these propagators are determined in both the Higgs phase and the confinement phase and compared to the Yang-Mills case, using lattice gauge theory. Since the propagators are gauge-dependent, this is done in the Landau limit of 't Hooft gauge, permitting to also determine the ghost propagator. It is found that neither the gauge boson nor the scalar differ qualitatively in the different cases. In particular, the …
The property of color confinement ("C confinement"), meaning that all asymptotic particle states are color neutral, holds not only in QCD, but also in gauge-Higgs theories deep in the Higgs regime. In this talk we describe a new and stronger confinement criterion, separation-of-charge confinement or "S$_c$ confinement," which is an extension of the Wilson area-law criterion to gauge + matter theories. We will show that there is a transition between S$_c$ and C confinement in the phase plane of gauge-Higgs theories, and we will also explain what symmetry is actually broken in the Higgs phase of…
