Recently we introduced an extended vector bundle X on which non-Abelian tensor gauge fields realize a connection. Our aim here is to introduce interaction of these non-Abelian tensor gauge fields with fermions and bosons. We have found that there exist two series of gauge invariant forms describing this interaction. The linear sum of these forms comprises the general gauge invariant Lagrangian. Studying the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations we found that a particular linear combination of these forms exhibits enhanced symmetry which guarantees the conservation of the corresponding high-rank currents. A possible mechanism of symmetry breaking and mass generation of tensor gauge bosons is suggested.
For non-Abelian tensor gauge fields of the lower rank we have found an alternative expression for the field strength tensors, which transform homogeneously with respect to the complementary gauge transformations and allow us to construct the dual Lagrangian.
We construct the duality-symmetric actions for a large class of six-dimensional models describing hierarchies of non-Abelian scalar, vector and tensor fields related to each other by first-order (self-)duality equations that follow from these actions. In particular, this construction provides a Lorentz invariant action for non-Abelian self-dual tensor fields. The class of models includes the bosonic sectors of the 6d (1,0) superconformal models of interacting non-Abelian self-dual tensor, vector, and hypermultiplets.
The Seiberg-Witten formalism has been realized as an electrodynamics in phase space (associated to the Dirac equation written in phase space) and this fact is explored here with non-abelian gauge group. First, a physically heuristic presentation of the Seiberg-Witten approach is carried out for non-abelian gauge in order to guide the calculation procedures. These results are realized by starting with the Lagrangian density for the free Dirac field in phase space. Then a field strength is derived, where the non-abelian gauge group is the SU(2), corresponding to an isospin (non-abelian) field th…
We construct the theory of non-abelian gauge antisymmetric tensor fields, which generalize the standard Yang-MIlls fields and abelian gauge p-forms. The corresponding gauge group acts on the space of inhomogeneous differential forms and it is shown to be a supergroup. The wide class of generalized Chern-Simons actions is constructed.
The problem of identifying the dynamical degrees of freedom for SU(2) gauge theories is discussed. After studying SU(N) theories, it is shown that classical pure SU(2) gauge theory is equivalent to an abelian theory. Finally, we prove that the Maximal Abelian Gauge correctly identifies the abelian degrees of freedom of the SU(2) theory.
We consider Yang-Mills theory in a general class of Abelian gauges. Exploiting the residual Abelian symmetry on a quantum level, we derive a set of Ward identities in functional form, valid to all orders in perturbation theory. As a consequence, the coupling constant is only renormalised through the Abelian two-point function. This implies that asymptotic freedom in all Abelian gauges can be understood from an effective Abelian theory alone, which can be interpreted as Abelian dominance in the high energy regime.
We introduce a non-Abelian tensor multiplet directly in the loop space associated with flat six-dimensional Minkowski space-time, and derive the supersymmetry variations for on-shell ${\cal{N}}=(2,0)$ supersymmetry.
We consider SU(2) gauge potentials over a space with a compactified dimension. A non-Abelian Fourier transform of the gauge potential in the compactified dimension is defined in such a way that the Fourier coefficients are (almost) gauge invariant. The functional measure and the gauge field strengths are expressed in terms of these Fourier coefficients. The emerging formulation of the non-Abelian gauge theory turns out to be an Abelian gauge theory of a set of fields defined over the initial space with the compactified dimension excluded. The Abelian theory contains an Abelian gauge field, a s…
We assume the existence of a background vector field that enables us to make an ansatz for the superconformal transformations for the non-Abelian 6d $(1,0)$ tensor multiplet. Closure of supersymmetry on generators of the conformal algebra, requires that the vector field is Abelian, has scaling dimension minus one and that the supersymmetry parameter as well as all the fields in the tensor multiplet have vanishing Lie derivatives along this vector field. We couple the tensor multiplet to a hypermultiplet and obtain superconformal transformations that we close off-shell.
Using generalized field strength tensors for non-Abelian tensor gauge fields one can explicitly construct all possible Lorentz invariant quadratic forms for rank-4 non-Abelian tensor gauge fields and demonstrate that there exist only two linear combinations of them which form a gauge invariant Lagrangian. Together with the previous construction of independent gauge invariant forms for rank-2 and rank-3 tensor gauge fields this construction proves the uniqueness of early proposed general Lagrangian up to rank-4 tensor fields. Expression for the coefficients of the general Lagrangian is presente…
A new non-Abelian gauge transformation for two-forms is introduced. Construction is based on a fixed map from the spacetime to the loop space which attachs a closed loop to each point of the spacetime. It is argued that this set-up is consistent with the surface ordering ambiguity which is the main problem to construct the Wilson surface operator for non-Abelian groups. With the aim of the Wilson surface operator, we achieve a non-Abelian gauge transformation for two-forms. We interpret the Dirac operator as a vector field and define a covariant derivative and rederive the gauge transformation…
The massless Schwinger model without the kinetic term of gauge field has gauge anomaly. We quantize the model as an anomalous gauge theory in the most general class of gauge conditions. We show that the gauge field becomes a dynamical variable because of gauge anomaly.
If one compactifies the Abelian $(1,0)$ tensor multiplet on a circle, one finds 5d SYM for the zero modes. For the Kaluza-Klein modes one can likewise find a Lagrangian description in 5d \cite{Bonetti:2012st}. Since in 5d we have an ordinary YM gauge potential, one may look for a non-Abelian generalization and indeed such a non-Abelian generalization was found in \cite{Bonetti:2012st}. In this paper, we study this non-Abelian generalization for the $(1,0)$ tensor multiplet in detail. We obtain the supersymmetry variations that we close on-shell. This way we get the fermionic equation of motion…
It is shown how gauge bosons can be supplied a mass term using the Higgs mechanism for the purpose of regulating Hamiltonians of Abelian gauge theories in the front form of quantum dynamics.
We construct six-dimensional superconformal models with non-abelian tensor and hypermultiplets. They describe the field content of (2,0) theories, coupled to (1,0) vector multiplets. The latter are part of the non-abelian gauge structure that also includes non-dynamical three- and four-forms. The hypermultiplets are described by gauged nonlinear sigma models with a hyper-Kaehler cone target space. We also address the question of constraints in these models and show that their resolution requires the inclusion of abelian factors. These provide couplings that were previously considered for anoma…
For non-Abelian tensor gauge fields we have found an alternative form of duality transformation, which has the property that the direct and the inverse transformations coincide. This duality transformation has the desired property that the direct and the inverse transformations map Lagrangian forms into each other.
In this paper, a general theory on unification of non-Abelian SU(N) gauge interactions and gravitational gauge interactions is discussed. SU(N) gauge interactions and gravitational gauge interactions are formulated on the similar basis and are unified in a semi-direct product group GSU(N). Based on this model, we can discuss unification of fundamental interactions of Nature.
On the basis of the Weyl equations of congruent transference, we consider a possible influence of the Weyl non-Abelian gauge field defining the transference on the precession of a gyroscope. Plane-wave solutions to the equations of the non-Abelian gauge field are derived.
A detailed discussion of the renormalization properties of a class of gauges which interpolates among the Landau, Coulomb and Maximal Abelian gauges is provided in the framework of the algebraic renormalization in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions.
Functional equations like exact renormalization group and Dyson-Schwinger equations have contributed to a better understanding of non-perturbative phenomena in quantum field theories in terms of the underlying Green functions. In Yang-Mills theory especially the Landau gauge has been used, as it is the most accessible gauge for these methods. The growing understanding obtained in this gauge allows to proceed to other gauges in order to obtain more information about the relation of different realizations of the confinement mechanism. In the maximally Abelian gauge first results are very encoura…
This work studies the relationship between gauge-invariant and non gauge-invariant abelian vector models. Following a technique introduced by Harada and Tsutsui, we show that the Proca and the Chiral Schwinger models may both be viewed as gauge-fixed versions of genuinely gauge- invariant models. This leads to the proposal that any consistent Abelian vector model with no gauge symmetry can be understood as a gauge theory that had its gauge fixed, which establishes an equivalence between gauge-invariant and non gauge-invariant models. Finally, we show that a gauge-invariant version of the chira…
We study two different possibilities of constructing the energy-momentum tensors for non-commutative Abelian Proca field, by using (i) general Noether theorem and (ii) coupling to a weak external gravitational field. Both energy-momentum tensors are not traceless due to the violation of Lorentz invariance in non-commutative spaces. In particular, we show that the obtained energy density of the latter case coincides exactly with that of obtained by Dirac quantization method.
Einstein- Schroedinger (ES) non-symmetric theory has been extended to accommodate the Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories of dyons in terms of the quaternion-octonion metric realization. Corresponding covariant derivatives for complex, quaternion and octonion spaces in internal gauge groups are shown to describe the consistent field equations and generalized Dirac equation of dyons. It is also shown that quaternion and octonion representations extend the so-called unified theory of gravitation and electromagnetism to the Yang-Mill's fields leading to two SU(2) gauge theories of internal spa…
Employing methods introduced by Schwinger in quantum electrodynamics, we compute the propagator for a non-Abelian gauge field in a plane wave background field. In the long distance limit a mass-like term for the gauge field is induced by this interaction.
We extend gauge symmetry of Abelian gauge field to incorporate quantum gauge degrees of freedom. We twice apply the Harada--Tsutsui gauge recovery procedure to gauge-fixed theories. First, starting from the Faddeev--Popov path integral in the Landau gauge, we recover the gauge symmetry by introducing an additional field as an extended gauge degree of freedom. Fixing the extended gauge symmetry by the usual Faddeev--Popov procedure, we obtain the theory of Type I gaugeon formalism. Next, applying the same procedure to the resulting gauge-fixed theory, we obtain a theory equivalent to the extend…
The path integral for 3+1 abelian gauge theory is rewritten in terms of a real antisymmetric field allowing a dual action that couples the electric and magnetic currents to the photon and each other in a gauge invariant manner. Standard perturbative abelian quantum electrodynamics reemerges when the monopole current vanishes. For certain simple relationships between the monopole current and the electric current, the altered photon propagator can exhibit abelian charge confinement or develop mass, modeling effects believed to be present in non-abelian theories.
We show for the case of interacting massless vector bosons, how the structure of Yang-Mills theories emerges automatically from a more fundamental concept, namely perturbative quantum gauge invariance. It turns out that the coupling in a non-abelian gauge theory is necessarily of Yang-Mills type plus divergence- and coboundary couplings. The extension of the method to massive gauge theories is briefly discussed.
We show that the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop for topologically massive abelian gauge theory in $\RR^3$ can be defined so that its large-mass limit be the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop for abelian Chern-Simons theory also in $\RR^3$.
Maximal Abelian gauge has been a particular choice to study dynamical generation of off-diagonal gluon masses in QCD. This gauge is a special case of Abelian projection. Massive off-diagonal gluons are considered a clue to Abelian dominance. Here we propose a gauge condition which is quadratic in fields and which does not fall in the class of Abelian projection. However it does generate off-diagonal gluon masses dynamically thus hinting at Abelian dominance in this gauge too.
The non-Abelian tensor gauge fields take value in extended Poincaré algebra. In order to define the invariant Lagrangian we introduce a vector variable in two alternative ways: through the transversal representation of the extended Poincaré algebra and through the path integral over the auxiliary vector field with the U(1) Abelian action. We demonstrate that path integral formulation allows to fix the unitary gauge, derive scattering amplitudes in spinor representation and to define the gauge invariant Lagrangian in a curved space-time.
The local covariant continuum action of an SU(2) gauge theory in covariant Abelian gauges is investigated. It describes the critical limit of an Abelian Lattice Gauge Theory (LGT) with an equivariant BRST-symmetry. This Abelian LGT has previously been proven to be physically equivalent to the SU(2)-LGT. Renormalizability requires a quartic ghost interaction in these nonlinear gauges (also in maximal Abelian gauge). Arguments that a certain global SL(2,R) symmetry is dynamically broken by ghost-antighost condensation in a BCS-like mechanism are presented. The scenario can be viewed as a dynamic…
A prescription for center gauge fixing for pure Yang-Mills theory in the continuum with general gauge groups is presented. The emergence of various types of singularities (magnetic monopoles and center vortices) appearing in the course of the gauge fixing procedure are discussed.
We consider Chern-Simons actions of Abelian tensor hierarchy of $p$-form gauge fields in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity. Using conformal superspace formalism, we solve the constraints on the field strengths of the $p$-form gauge superfields in the presence of the tensor hierarchy. The solutions are expressed by the prepotentials of the $p$-form gauge superfields. We show the internal and superconformal transformation laws of the prepotentials. The descent formalism for the Chern-Simons actions is exhibited.
In this work, we explore a mechanism for abelian gauge field localization on thick branes based on a five-dimensional Stueckelberg-like action. A normalizable zero mode is found through the identification of a suitable coupling function between the brane and the gauge field. The same mechanism is studied for the localization of the abelian Kalb--Ramond field.
In this Thesis we present a comprehensive study of perturbative and non-perturbative non-Abelian gauge theories in the light of gauge-fixing procedures, focusing our attention on the BRST formalism in Yang-Mills theory. We propose first a model to re-write the Faddeev-Popov quantisation method in terms of group-theoretical techniques and then we give a possible way to solve the no-go theorem of Neuberger for lattice Yang-Mills theory with double BRST symmetry. In the final part we present a study of the Batalin-Vilkovisky quantisation method for non-linear gauges in non-Abelian gauge theories.
We present a simple renormalizable abelian gauge model which includes antisymmetric second-rank tensor fields as matter fields rather than gauge fields known for a long time. The free action is conformally rather than gauge invariant. The quantization of the free fields is analyzed and the one-loop renormalization-group functions are evaluated. Transverse free waves are found to convey no energy. The coupling constant of the axial-vector abelian gauge interaction exhibits asymptotically free ultraviolet behavior, while the self-couplings of the tensor fields do not asymptotically diminish.
The existence of a SL(2,R) symmetry is discussed in SU(N) Yang-Mills in the maximal Abelian Gauge. This symmetry, also present in the Landau and Curci-Ferrari gauge, ensures the absence of tachyons in the maximal Abelian gauge. In all these gauges, SL(2,R) turns out to be dynamically broken by ghost condensates.
We investigate warped compactification with an abelian gauge theory in six dimensions. The vanishing cosmological constant in four dimensions can generically be realized with a regular metric even in a 3-brane background without fine tuning of couplings.
We consider Abelian tensor hierarchy in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in the conformal superspace formalism, where the so-called covariant approach is used to antisymmetric tensor fields. We introduce $p$-form gauge superfields as superforms in the conformal superspace. We solve the Bianchi identities under the constraints for the superforms. As a result, each of form fields is expressed by a single gauge invariant superfield. The action of superforms is shown with the invariant superfields. We also show the relation between the superspace formalism and the superconformal tensor c…
Gauge theories on q-deformed spaces are constructed using covariant derivatives. For this purpose a ``vielbein'' is introduced, which transforms under gauge transformations. The non-Abelian case is treated by establishing a connection to gauge theories on commutative spaces, i.e. by a Seiberg-Witten map. As an example we consider the Manin plane. Remarks are made concerning the relation between covariant coordinates and covariant derivatives.
An enveloping algebra valued gauge field is constructed, its components are functions of the Lie algebra valued gauge field and can be constructed with the Seiberg-Witten map. This allows the formulation of a dynamics for a finite number of gauge field components on non-commutative spaces.
We construct the interaction terms between the worldvolume fields of multiple M2-branes and 3-form gauge field of 11-dimensional supergravity, in the context of ABJM theory. The obtained Wess-Zumino-type coupling is simultaneously invariant under the U$_{\textrm{L}}(N)\times$U$_{\textrm{R}}(N)$ non-Abelian gauge transformation of the ABJM theory and the Abelian gauge transformation of the 3-form field in 11-dimensional supergravity.
We study six-dimensional N=(1,0) supergravity theories with abelian, as well as non-abelian, gauge group factors. We show that for theories with fewer than nine tensor multiplets, the number of possible combinations of gauge groups - including abelian factors - and non-abelian matter representations is finite. We also identify infinite families of theories with distinct U(1) charges that cannot be ruled out using known quantum consistency conditions, though only a finite subset of these can arise from known string constructions.
We present an N=1 supersymmetric generalization of the Maximal Abelian Gauge (MAG) in its superfield and component-field formulations, and discuss its Faddeev-Popov quantization, the associated BRST symmetry and the corresponding Slavnov-Taylor identity in superspace approach.
In the recently proposed extension of the YM theory, non-Abelian tensor gauge field of the second rank is represented by a general tensor whose symmetric part describes the propagation of charged gauge boson of helicity two and its antisymmetric part - the helicity zero charged gauge boson. On the non-interacting level these polarizations are similar to the polarizations of the graviton and of the Abelian antisymmetric B field, but the interaction of these gauge bosons carrying non-commutative internal charges cannot be directly identified with the interaction of gravitons or B field. Our inte…
The exact solutions of the Dirac equation in an external non-abelian SU(N) gauge field which is in the form of a plane wave on the light cone is obtained. The whole set of the solutions for both particles and anti-particle is constructed.
We suggest an infinite-dimensional extension of the gauge transformations which includes non-Abelian tensor gauge fields. Extended gauge transformations of non-Abelian tensor gauge fields form a new large group which has natural geometrical interpretation it terms of extended current algebra associated with compact Lie group. We shall demonstrate that one can construct two infinite series of gauge invariant quadratic forms, so that a linear combination of them comprises the general Lagrangian. The general Lagrangian exhibits enhanced local gauge invariants with double number of gauge parameter…
We present a brief discussion of recent work on duality symmetries in non-trivial string backgrounds. Duality is obtained from a gauged non-linear sigma-model with vanishing gauge field strength. Standard results are reproduced for abelian gauge groups, whereas a new type of duality is identified for non--abelian gauge groups. Examples of duals of WZW models and 4-d black holes are given. (Presented at `From Superstrings to Supergravity', Erice 1992)
I argue that coupling the Abelian Higgs model to gravity plus a negative cosmological constant leads to black holes which spontaneously break the gauge invariance via a charged scalar condensate slightly outside their horizon. This suggests that black holes can superconduct.
The new generalization of the gauge interaction for the bosonic strings is found. We consider some quasiequivariant maps from the space of metrics on the worldsheet to the space of $n$-tuples of one- and two-dimensional loops. The two-dimensional case is based on the cylinders interacted with a path space connection. The special 2-gauge string model is formulated using two 1-connections, non-Abelian background symmetric tensor field and non-Abelian 2-form. The branched non-Abelian space-time is the result of our construction.
Taking the simple examples of an Abelian 1-form gauge theory in two (1 + 1)-dimensions, a 2-form gauge theory in four (3 + 1)-dimensions and a 3-form gauge theory in six (5 + 1)-dimensions of spacetime, we establish that such gauge theories respect, in addition to the gauge symmetry transformations that are generated by the first-class constraints of the theory, additional continuous symmetry transformations. We christen the latter symmetry transformations as the dual-gauge transformations. We generalize the above gauge and dual-gauge transformations to obtain the proper (anti-)BRST and (anti-…
The Georgi-Glashow model equations of motion are examined by general static spherically symmetric real and complex parametrizations of gauge fields in arbitrary gauge. Their connection with the known `t Hooft-Polyakov and Julia-Zee equations is shown without any gauge-fixing, elucidating so the gauge invariant meaning of corresponding functions. The obtained systems of equations have a new exact analytical solutions for complex non-abelian monopole and dyon fields with real finite or zero energy densities.
In order to investigate the composite gauge field, we consider the compositeness condition (i.e. renormalization constant $Z_3=0$) in the general non-abelian gauge field theory. We calculate $Z_3$ at the next-to-leading order in $1/N_f$ expansion ($N_f$ is the number of fermion flavors), and obtain the expression to the gauge coupling constant through the compositeness condition. Then the gauge coupling constant is proportional to $1/\sqrt{4N_f T(R)-11C_2(G)}$ where T(R) is the index for a representation R of gauge group G, and $C_2(G)$ is the quadratic Casimir. It is found that the gauge boso…
We give a wilsonian formulation of non-abelian gauge theories explicitly consistent with axial gauge Ward identitities. The issues of unitarity and dependence on the quantization direction are carefully investigated. A wilsonian computation of the one-loop QCD beta function is performed.
Recently, we have proposed a new front-form quantization which treated both the $x^{+}$ and the $x^{-}$ coordinates as front-form 'times.' This quantization was found to preserve parity explicitly. In this paper we extend this construction to local Abelian gauge fields . We quantize this theory using a method proposed originally by Faddeev and Jackiw . We emphasize here the feature that quantizing along both $x^+$ and $x^-$ , gauge theories does not require extra constraints (also known as 'gauge conditions') to determine the solution uniquely.
We compare the structure of the tree level scattering amplitudes in non-Abelian tensor gauge field theory and in open string theory with Chan-Paton charges. We limit ourselves considering only lower rank tensor fields in both theories. We identify the symmetric and antisymmetric components of the second rank tensor gauge field with the string excitations on the third and forth levels. In the process of this identification we have been selecting only those parts of the tree level scattering amplitudes in the open string theory which have dimensionless coupling constants in four dimensions. It s…
It is shown that the four $(3 + 1)$-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory provides an example of (i) a class of field theoretical models for the Hodge theory, and (ii) a possible candidate for the quasi-topological field theory (q-TFT). Despite many striking similarities with some of the key topological features of the two $(1 + 1)$-dimensional (2D) free Abelian (and self-interacting non-Abelian) gauge theories, it turns out that the 4D free Abelian 2-form gauge theory is {\it not} an exact TFT. To corroborate this conclusion, some of the key issues are discussed. In particular, it…
Following the formalism of enveloping algebras and star product calculus we formulate and analyze a model of gauge gravity on noncommutative spaces and examine the conditions of its equivalence to general relativity. The corresponding Seiberg-Witten maps are established which allow the definition of respective dynamics for a finite number of gravitational gauge field components on noncommutative spaces.
