I argue that coupling the Abelian Higgs model to gravity plus a negative cosmological constant leads to black holes which spontaneously break the gauge invariance via a charged scalar condensate slightly outside their horizon. This suggests that black holes can superconduct.
We compute the exact canonically induced parity breaking part of the effective action for 2+1 massive fermions in particular Abelian and non Abelian gauge field backgrounds. The method of computation resorts to the chiral anomaly of the dimensionally reduced theory.
A four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking non-Abelian Chern-Simons like action is generated as a one-loop perturbative correction via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of the non-Abelian gauge field to the spinor field. This term is shown to be regularization dependent but nevertheless it can be found unambiguously in different regularization schemes at zero and finite temperature.
We investigate the effect of a constant external non-Abelian field on chiral symmetry breaking in a (2+1)-dimensional Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and in 3D QCD by solving the gap equation and the Bethe-Salpeter equation, and also by RG analysis. In the (2+1)-dimensional NJL model chiral symmetry breaking occurs for any weak coupling constant but in 3D QCD catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking does not occur.
We consider the abelian vector-field models in the presence of the Wess-Zumino interaction with the pseudoscalar matter. The occurence of the dynamic breaking of Lorentz symmetry at classical and one-loop level is described for massless and massive vector fields. This phenomenon appears to be the non-perturbative counterpart of the perturbative renormalizability and/or unitarity breaking in the chiral gauge theories.
The gauge-invariant Chern-Simons-type Lorentz- and CPT-breaking term is here reassessed and a spin-projector method is adopted to account for the breaking (vector) parameter. Issues like causality, unitarity, spontaneous gauge-symmetry breaking and vortex formation are investigated, and consistency conditions on the external vector are identified.
Ghost condensates of dimension two in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the Maximal Abelian Gauge are discussed. These condensates turn out to be related to the dynamical breaking of the SL(2,R) symmetry present in this gauge
We show that the topological $B \wedge F$ term in $3+1$ dimensions can be generated via spontaneous symmetry breaking in a generalized Abelian Higgs model. Further, we also show that even in $D$ dimensions $ ( D \geq 3 ) $, a $B \wedge F$ term gives rise to the topological massive excitations of the Abelian gauge field and that such a $B \wedge F$ term can also be generated via Higgs mechanism.
We construct Abelian brane models with metastable vacua which are obtained from deformations of ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric brane configurations. One such model lives on a D4 brane stretched between two displaced and rotated NS5 branes. Another one lives on a D5 brane wrapped on a deformed and fibered $A_2$ singularity.
We demonstrate how nonlocal regularization is applied to gauge invariant models with spontaneous symmetry breaking. Motivated by the ability to find a nonlocal BRST invariance that leads to the decoupling of longitudinal gauge bosons from physical amplitudes, we show that the original formulation of the method leads to a nontrivial relationship between the nonlocal form factors that can appear in the model.
The non-perturbative nilpotent exact BRST symmetry of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge constructed in [ arXiv:1506.06995 [hep-th]] is generalized to the case of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. The resulting diagonal gluon propagator is evaluating in dimensions D=4,3,2. In D=4,3 a decoupling type behavior is found in the infrared region, while in D=2 a scaling type behavior emerges.
We present a numerical investigation of the dynamics of symmetry breaking in both Abelian and non-Abelian $[S U (2)]$ Higgs models in three spatial dimensions. We find a class of time-dependent, long-lived nonperturbative field configurations within the range of parameters corresponding to type-1 superconductors, that is, with vector masses ($m_v$) larger than scalar masses ($m_s$). We argue that these emergent nontopological configurations are related to oscillons found previously in other contexts. For the Abelian-Higgs model, our lattice implementation allows us to map the range of paramete…
The non-Abelian aether-like Lorentz-breaking term, involving triple and quartic self-coupling vertices, is generated from the non-Abelian generalization of the Lorentz-breaking extended QED including only a minimal spinor-vector interaction. This term is shown explicitly to be finite and non-ambiguous.
I present a heuristic calculation of the critical exponent relating the gravitino mass to the cosmological constant in a de Sitter universe. The ingredients for the calculation are the area law for entropy, an R symmetry of the low energy effective Lagrangian, and a crude picture of the degenerate levels of the cosmological horizon.
We propose a new mechanism for symmetry breaking in which, apart from particle degrees of freedom, topological degrees of freedom also emerge. In this method, a decomposition for the fields of the Yang-Mills-Higgs theory is introduced and Lagrangian is written based on new variables. This new Lagrangian does not change the dynamics of the theory, at least at the classical level. We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking for this new Lagrangian and show that how it works in Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. In the case of Abelian gauge theory our method adds nothing new to the so-called …
In this paper we describe a new type of topological defect, called a homilia string, which is stabilized via interactions with the string network. Using analytical and numerical techniques, we investigate the stability and dynamics of homilia strings, and show that they can form stable electroweak strings. In SU(2)xU(1) models of symmetry breaking the intersection of two homilia strings is identified with a sphaleron. Due to repulsive forces, the homilia strings seperate, resulting in sphaleron annihilation. It is shown that electroweak homilia string loops cannot stabilize as vortons, which c…
For a type of non-minimally coupled vector-tensor theories with Abelian gauge symmetry breaking in four-dimensional spacetime and correspondingly asymptotic non-AdS black hole solutions including a cosmological constant, we construct the appropriate boundary terms and derive the associated junction condition. In order to remove the divergences in the stress tensor which is localized on the spacetime boundary, we also involve the suitable surface counterterms into the total action. Using the counterterm method, we caculate the black hole mass. An implicit relation between the black hole carge $…
We present arguments for the existence of higher dimensional asymptotically AdS non Abelian black holes with a Ricci flat event horizon and analyze their basic properties. Unlike higher dimensional black holes with a curved horizon, of the usual Einstein-Yang-Mills system, these solutions have finite mass-energy. Below some non-zero critical temperature, they are thermodynamically preferred over the Abelian configurations.
The fibre bundle formalism inherent to the construction of non-abelian Kaluza-Klein theories is presented and its associated dimensional reduction process analysed: is performed the dimensional reduction of G-invariant matter and gauge fields over a multidimensional universe; the harmonic decomposition of non-symmetric fields over its internal space established and their dimensional reduction done. The spontaneous compactification process is presented. It is shown that during the dimensional reduction process two types of symmetry breaking can occur: a geometric followed by a spontaneous symme…
In the Abelian projection the Yang--Mills theory contains Abelian gauge fields (diagonal degrees of freedom) and the Abelian matter fields (off-diagonal degrees) described by a complicated action. The matter fields are essential for the breaking of the adjoint string. We obtain numerically the effective action of the Abelian gauge and the Abelian matter fields in quenched SU(2) QCD and show that the Abelian matter fields provide an essential contribution to the total action even in the infrared region. We also observe the breaking of an Abelian analog of the adjoint string using Abelian operat…
An all orders algebraic proof of the multiplicative renormalizability of the novel formulation of the Gribov-Zwanziger action proposed in Phys. Rev. D 86, 045005 (2012) [arXiv:1205.3934], and allowing for an exact but spontaneously broken BRST symmetry, is provided.
We show how the widely used concept of spontaneous symmetry breaking can be explained in causal perturbation theory by introducing a perturbative version of quantum gauge invariance. Perturbative gauge invariance, formulated exclusively by means of asymptotic fields, is discussed for the simple example of Abelian U(1) gauge theory (Abelian Higgs model). Our findings are relevant for the electroweak theory, as pointed out elsewhere.
We study the theory of non-relativistic matter with non-Abelian $U(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge interaction in $(2+1)$ dimensions. We adopt the mean field approximation in the current-algebra formulation already applied to the Abelian anyons. We first show that this method is able to describe both ``boson-based'' and ``fermion-based'' anyons and yields consistent results over the whole range of fractional statistics. In the non-Abelian theory, we find a superfluid (and superconductive) phase, which is smoothly connected with the Abelian superfluid phase originally discovered by Laughlin. The charact…
An abelian gauge symmetry can be spontaneously broken near a black hole horizon in anti-de Sitter space using a condensate of non-abelian gauge fields. There is a second order phase transition between Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter solutions, which are preferred at high temperatures, and symmetry breaking solutions, which are preferred at low temperatures.
We calculate the exact parity odd part of the effective action ($Γ_{odd}^{2d+1}$) for massive Dirac fermions in 2d+1 dimensions at finite temperature, for a certain class of gauge field configurations. We consider first Abelian external gauge fields, and then we deal with the case of a non-Abelian gauge group containing an Abelian U(1) subgroup. For both cases, it is possible to show that the result depends on topological invariants of the gauge field configurations, and that the gauge transformation properties of $Γ_{odd}^{2d+1}$ depend only on those invariants and on the winding number of th…
We calculate the one-loop perturbative correction to the coefficient of the \cs term in non-abelian gauge theory in the presence of Higgs fields, with a variety of symmetry-breaking structures. In the case of a residual $U(1)$ symmetry, radiative corrections do not change the coefficient of the \cs term. In the case of an unbroken non-abelian subgroup, the coefficient of the relevant \cs term (suitably normalized) attains an integral correction, as required for consistency of the quantum theory. Interestingly, this coefficient arises purely from the unbroken non-abelian sector in question; the…
Recently derived results for the exact induced parity-breaking term in 2+1 dimensions at finite temperature are shown to be relevant to the determination of the free energy for fixed-charge ensembles. The partition functions for fixed total charge corresponding to massive fermions in the presence of Abelian and non-Abelian magnetic fields are discussed. We show that the presence of the induced Chern-Simons term manifests itself in that the free energy depends strongly on the relation between the external magnetic flux and the value of the fixed charge.
We investigate new aspects related to the abelian gauge-Higgs model with the addition of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw term. We focus on one-loop quantum corrections to the photon and Higgs sectors due to spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry and show that new finite and definite Lorentz-breaking terms are induced. Specifically in the gauge sector, a CPT-even aether term is induced. Besides, aspects of the one-loop renormalization of the background vector dependent terms are discussed.
An equivalent formulation of the Gribov-Zwanziger theory accounting for the gauge fixing ambiguity in the Landau gauge is presented. The resulting action is constrained by a Slavnov-Taylor identity stemming from a nilpotent exact BRST invariance which is spontaneously broken due to the presence of the Gribov horizon. This spontaneous symmetry breaking can be described in a purely algebraic way through the introduction of a pair of auxiliary fields which give rise to a set of linearly broken Ward identities. The Goldstone sector turns out to be decoupled. The underlying exact nilpotent BRST inv…
We study heterotic supergravity on the conifold and its Z2 orbifold with Abelian gauge fields and three-form flux. At large distances, these solutions are locally Ricci-flat, have a magnetic flux through the two-sphere at infinity as well as non-zero five-brane charge. For a given flux, our family of solutions has three real parameters, the size of the pair of two spheres in the IR and the dilaton zero mode. We present an explicit analytic solution for the decoupled near horizon region where for a given flux, the size of the cycles is frozen and the only parameter is the dilaton zero mode. We …
We study domain walls and vortices in chiral symmetry breaking in a QCD-like theory with N flavors in the chiral limit. If the axial anomaly is absent, there exist stable Abelian axial vortices winding around the spontaneously broken U(1)_A symmetry and non-Abelian axial vortices winding around both the U(1)_A and non-Abelian SU(N) chiral symmetries. In the presence of the axial anomaly term, metastable domain walls are present and Abelian axial vortices must be attached by N domain walls, forming domain wall junctions. We show that a domain wall junction decays into N non-Abelian vortices att…
Motivated by the study of holographic superconductors, we generalize no-hair theorems for minimally coupled scalar fields charged under an Abelian gauge field, in arbitrary dimensions and with arbitrary horizon topology. We first present a straightforward generalization of no-hair theorems for neutral scalar hair. We then consider the existence of extremal black holes with scalar hair, and in the case of horizons with zero or positive curvature, provide a bound on the mass and charge of the scalar field that are necessary for the scalar hair to develop.
In this paper, we investigate the application of the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE) in the determination of the effective potential and the study of Dynamical Symmetry Breaking (DSB) in a massless Abelian Higgs (AH) model with an N-component complex scalar field in (3+1) dimensional spacetime. The classical Lagrangian of this model has scale invariance, which can be broken by radiative corrections to the effective potential. It is possible to calculate the effective potential using the RGE and the renormalization group functions that are obtained directly from loop calculations of the mo…
There are a large number of systems characterized by a completely broken gauge symmetry, but with an unbroken global color-flavor diagonal symmetry, i.e., systems in the so-called color-flavor locked phase. If the gauge symmetry breaking supports vortices, the latter develop non-Abelian orientational zero-modes and become non-Abelian vortices, a subject of intense study in the last several years. In this paper we consider the effects of weakly gauging the full exact global flavor symmetry in such systems, deriving an effective description of the light excitations in the presence of a vortex. S…
We review a recent development in the theoretical understanding of the nu=5/2 quantum Hall plateau and propose a new conformal field theory, slightly different from the Moore-Read one, to describe another universality class relevant for this plateau. The ground state is still given by the Pfaffian and is completely polarized, however, the elementary quasiholes are charge 1/2 anyons with abelian statistics theta=pi/2, which obey complete spin-charge separation. The physical hole is represented by two such quasiholes plus a free neutral Majorana fermion. We also compute the periods and amplitude…
We study non-Abelian fields in the context of very special relativity (VSR). For this we define the covariant derivative and the gauge field gauge transformations, both of them involving a fixed null vector $n_μ$, related to the VSR breaking of the Lorentz group to the Hom(2) or Sim(2) subgroups. As in the Abelian case the gauge field becomes massive. Moreover we show that the VSR gauge transformations form a closed algebra. We then write actions coupling the gauge field to various matter fields (bosonic and fermionic). We mention how we can use the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism to g…
In non-Abelian field theories with q-symmetry groups the massive particles have a non-local interpretation with a stringlike spectrum. It is shown that a massless vector similarly acquires a tower of masses by spontaneous symmetry breaking.
We present arguments for the existence of charged, rotating black holes with equal magnitude angular momenta in $d=5$ Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with negative cosmological constant. These solutions posses a regular horizon of spherical topology and approach asymptotically the Anti-de Sitter spacetime background. The black hole solutions have also an electric charge and a nonvanishing magnetic flux through the sphere at infinity. Different from the static case, no regular solution with a nonvanishing angular momenta is found for a vanishing event horizon radius.
We present clear numerical evidence for string breaking in three-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory with fundamental bosonic matter through a mixing analysis between Wilson loops and meson operators representing bound states of a static source and a dynamical scalar. The breaking scale is calculated in the continuum limit. In units of the lightest glueball we find $r_{\rm b} m_G\approx13.6$. The implications of our results for QCD are discussed.
It is generally believed that the spontaneous breaking of the Poincaré group by flux tubes (strings) generate only two zero modes localized on the string and associated with the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance (the so-called Low-Manohar argument). Being perfectly true in many instances it is nevertheless nonuniversal, and have to be amended in the case of order parameters carrying spatial indices. We show that under certain circumstances additional zero (or quasizero) modes can appear due to spin symmetry.
In the present work we show that it is possible to arrive at a Ginzburg-Landau (GL) like equation from pure SU(2) gauge theory. This has a connection to the dual superconducting model for color confinement where color flux tubes permanently bind quarks into color neutral states. The GL Lagrangian with a spontaneous symmetry breaking potential, has such (Nielsen-Olesen) flux tube solutions. The spontaneous symmetry breaking requires a tachyonic mass for the effective scalar field. Such a tachyonic mass term is obtained from the condensation of ghost fields.
We analyze the dynamics of a four-dimensional null hypersurface in a five-dimensional bulk spacetime with Einstein-Yang-Mills fields. In an appropriate ansatz, the projection of the field equations onto the hypersurface takes the form of conservation laws for relativistic hydrodynamics with global non-abelian charges. A Chern-Simons term in the bulk action corresponds to anomalies in the global charges, with a vorticity term arising in the hydrodynamics. We derive the entropy current and obtain unique expressions for some of the leading-order transport coefficients (in the abelian case, all of…
We analyze behaviour of D3-branes in BGMPZ throat geometry. We show that although single brane has some of the moduli stabilized multi-brane system tends to expand and form a bound state. Such a system loses non-abelian gauge symmetry.
We present a gauge independent method to construct the effective action of QCD, and calculate the one loop effective action of $SU(2)$ QCD in an arbitrary constant background field. Our result establishes the existence of a dynamical symmetry breaking by demonstrating that the effective potential develops a unique and stable vacuum made of the monopole condensation in one loop approximation. This provides a strong evidence for the magnetic confinement of color through the dual Meissner effect in the non-Abelian gauge theory. The result is obtained by separating the topological degrees which de…
We aim to offer a kind of unifying view on two popular topics in the studies of nonperturbative aspects of Yang-Mills theories in the Landau gauge: the so-called Gribov-Zwanziger approach and the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion. Borrowing results from statistical thermodynamics, we show that imposing the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion as a boundary condition leads to a modified yet renormalizable partition function. We verify that the resulting partition function is equivalent with the one obtained by Gribov and Zwanziger, which restricts the domain of integration in the path integral withi…
After imposing current conservation together with the Gauss law as initial conditions on the Abelian Nambu model, we prove that the resulting theory is equivalent to standard QED in the non-linear gauge $\left(A_{μ}A^{μ}-n^{2}M^{2}\right)=0$, to all orders in perturbation theory. We show this by writing both models in terms of the same variables, which produce identical Feynman rules for the interactions and propagators. A crucial point is to verify that the Faddeev-Popov ghosts arising from the gauge fixing procedure in the QED sector decouple to all orders. We verify this decoupling by follo…
We generalise our previous formulation of gauge-invariant PT-symmetric field theories to include models with non-Abelian symmetries and discuss the extension to such models of the Englert-Brout-Higgs-Kibble mechanism for generating masses for vector bosons. As in the Abelian case, the non-Abelian gauge fields are coupled to non-conserved currents. We present a consistent scheme for gauge fixing, demonstrating Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin invariance, and show that the particle spectrum and interactions are gauge invariant. We exhibit the masses that gauge bosons in the simplest two-doublet SU(2)xU…
Applying Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition for SU(2) Yang-Mills field, we obtain the Abelian-Higgs Lagrangian by some approximation. Abelian-Higgs Lagrangian with a spontaneous symmetry breaking potential has vortex solutions known as Nielsen-Olesen solutions. We conclude that vortices as well as magnetic monopoles can exist in Cho-Faddeev-Niemi decomposition of SU(2) Yang-Mills field.
Black hole configurations offer insights on the non-linear aspects of gravitational theories, and can suggest testable predictions for modifications of General Relativity. In this work, we examine exact black hole configurations in vector-tensor theories, originally proposed to explain dark energy by breaking the Abelian symmetry with a non-minimal coupling of the vector to gravity. We are able to evade the no-go theorems by Bekenstein on the existence of regular black holes in vector-tensor theories with Proca mass terms, and exhibit regular black hole solutions with a profile for the longitu…
In this paper we derive acoustic black hole metrics in the (3+1) and (2+1)-dimensional Abelian Higgs model with Lorentz symmetry breaking. In this set up the sound waves lose the Lorentz boost invariance and suffer a 'birefringence' effect. We have found acoustic black holes and respective Hawking temperatures depending on the Lorentz violating parameter. Furthermore, we obtain an acoustic Kerr-like black hole metric with the Lorentz violating term affecting its rate of loss of mass. We also have shown that for suitable values of the Lorentz violating parameter a wider spectrum of particle wav…
Gauge theory is the foundation of the particle physics Standard Model (SM). Considering the multiple gauge sectors for one gauge transformation, we study the generalized Abelian and non-Abelian (Yang-Mills theory) gauge theories. We first point out that the U(1) gauge theory has a few unique properties, which provide the motivations for the generalized Yang-Mills theory. Also, we consider the generalized Abelian gauge theory, and study the Higgs mechanism with new interesting properties. In addition, we propose the simple and generic generalizations of Yang-Mills theory. In the simple generali…
We study real fifth-order superfield constraint for ${\cal N}=2$ vector (and tensor) multiplet and derive most general solution describing complete supersymmetry breaking, and preserving a real scalar, two goldstini, and an abelian gauge field as low-energy degrees of freedom on which both supersymmetries are realized non-linearly. The surviving scalar is identified as an axion of a broken global abelian symmetry, while its scalar partner (saxion) is eliminated in terms of the goldstini. We provide an example of a UV model giving rise to the quintic constraint, and discuss the connection of th…
We have studied the existence of self-dual solitonic solutions in a generalization of the Abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs model. Such a generalization introduces two different nonnegative functions, $ω_1(|ϕ|)$ and $ω(|ϕ|)$, which split the kinetic term of the Higgs field - $|D_μϕ|^2 \rightarrowω_1 (|ϕ|)|D_0ϕ|^2-ω(|ϕ|) |D_kϕ|^2$ - breaking explicitly the Lorentz covariance. We have shown that a clean implementation of the Bogomolnyi procedure only can be implemented whether $ω(|ϕ|) \propto β|ϕ|^{2β-2}$ with $β\geq 1$. The self-dual or Bogomolnyi equations produce an infinity number of soliton soluti…
We consider the holographic abelian Higgs model and show that, in the absence of the scale symmetry breaking effect, chiral symmetry breaking gives linear confinement where the slope is given by the value of the chiral condensation. The model can be considered either as the theory of superconductivity or as the axial sector of QCD depending on the interpretation of the charge. We also provided a few models with linear confinement.
We study gravitational perturbations around the near horizon geometry of the (near) extreme Kerr black hole. By considering a consistent truncation for the metric fluctuations, we obtain a solution to the linearized Einstein equations. The dynamics is governed by two master fields which, in the context of the nAdS$_2$/nCFT$_1$ correspondence, are both irrelevant operators of conformal dimension $Δ=2$. These fields control the departure from extremality by breaking the conformal symmetry of the near horizon region. One of the master fields is tied to large diffeomorphisms of the near horizon, w…
We consider a BMS-type symmetry action on isolated horizons in asymptotically flat spacetimes. From the viewpoint of the non-relativistic field theory on a horizon membrane, supertranslations shift the field theory spatial momentum. The latter is related by a Ward identity to the particle number symmetry current and is spontaneously broken. The corresponding Goldstone boson shifts the horizon angular momentum and can be detected quantum mechanically. Similarly, area preserving superrotations are spontaneously broken on the horizon membrane and we identify the corresponding gapless modes. In as…
