For a type of non-minimally coupled vector-tensor theories with Abelian gauge symmetry breaking in four-dimensional spacetime and correspondingly asymptotic non-AdS black hole solutions including a cosmological constant, we construct the appropriate boundary terms and derive the associated junction condition. In order to remove the divergences in the stress tensor which is localized on the spacetime boundary, we also involve the suitable surface counterterms into the total action. Using the counterterm method, we caculate the black hole mass. An implicit relation between the black hole carge $Q$ and other parameters is implied by combining the expression of the black hole mass with the first law of black hole thermodynamics. With this implicit relation, we can prove the inequality $Q\leq M$ which is a general bound for most of charged black holes. Besides, the phase structure of black holes is also investigated in the grand canonical ensemble.
We discuss some aspects related to holography of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) dyonic hairy black holes, which break the conformal symetry of the boundary. We use counterterms for the scalar field that satisfies mixed boundary conditions to compute the Euclidean action and dual stress tensor. We apply these results to show that the Cardy-Verlinde formula is not satisfied. However, when the magnetic (or electric) charge vanishes, the conformal symmetry is preserved and the entropy of the black hole can be put in the Cardy-Verlinde form. In our analysis, there is no need of adding extra finite counterter…
We study the thermodynamics of an exact hairy black hole solution in Anti-deSitter (AdS) spacetime. We use the counterterm method supplemented with boundary terms for the scalar field to obtain the thermodynamic quantities and stress tensor of the dual field theory. We then extend our analysis by considering a dynamical cosmological constant and verify the isoperimetric inequality. Unlike the thermodynamics of Reissner-Nördstrom (RN) black hole in this `extended' framework, the presence of the scalar field and its self-interaction make also the criticality possible in the grand canonical ensem…
This is a short review of classical solutions with gravitating Yang-Mills fields in $D>4$ spacetime dimensions. The simplest SO(4) symmetric particlelike and SO(3) symmetric vortex type solutions in the Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in D=5 are considered, and their various generalizations with or without an event horizon, for other symmetries, in more general theories, and also in $D>5$ are described. In addition, supersymmetric solutions with gravitating Yang-Mills fields in string theory are discussed.
We investigate the thermodynamics of a general class of exact 4-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter hairy black hole solutions and show that, for a fixed temperature, there are small and large hairy black holes similar to the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. The large black holes have positive specific heat and so they can be in equilibrium with a thermal bath of radiation at the Hawking temperature. The relevant thermodynamic quantities are computed by using the Hamiltonian formalism and counterterm method. We explicitly show that there are first order phase transitions similar to the Hawk…
Hairy black holes and gravitational solitons in three dimensions for the new massive gravity theory proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend (BHT) are considered at the special case when there is a unique maximally symmetric solution. Following the Brown-York approach with suitable counterterms, it is shown that the soliton possesses a fixed negative mass which coincides with the one of AdS spacetime regardless the value of the integration constant that describes it. Hence, the soliton can be naturally regarded as a degenerate ground state labeled by a single modulus parameter. The Euclidean …
We show numerically that the Abelian Higgs field equations in the background of a four-dimensional rotating charged black string have vortex solutions. These solutions which have axial symmetry show that the rotating black string can support the Abelian Higgs field as hair. We find that one encounters with an electric field coupled to the Higgs scalar field for the case of rotating black string. This electric field is due to an electric charge per unit length, which increases as the rotation parameter becomes larger. We also find that the vortex thickness decreases as the rotation parameter gr…
We present a detailed analysis of the thermodynamics of exact asymptotically flat hairy black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We compute the regularized action, quasilocal stress tensor, and conserved charges by using a `counterterm method' similar to the one extensively used in the AdS-CFT duality. In the presence of a non-trivial dilaton potential that vanishes at the boundary we prove that, for some range of parameters, there exist thermodynamically stable black holes in the grand canonical and canonical ensembles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a therm…
We study gravitating monopoles and non-abelian black holes of SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory coupled to a massless dilaton. The domain of existence of these solutions decreases with increasing dilaton coupling constant. The critical solutions of this system are Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton solutions.
We apply the BMHV scheme for non-anticommuting $γ_5$ to an abelian chiral gauge theory at the two-loop level. As our main result, we determine the full structure of symmetry-restoring counterterms up to the two-loop level. These counterterms turn out to have the same structure as at the one-loop level and a simple interpretation in terms of restoration of well-known Ward identities. In addition, we show that the ultraviolet divergences cannot be canceled completely by counterterms generated by field and parameter renormalization, and we determine needed UV divergent evanescent counterterms. Th…
We consider black hole solutions with a dilaton field possessing a nontrivial potential approaching a constant negative value at infinity. The asymptotic behaviour of the dilaton field is assumed to be slower than that of a localized distribution of matter. A nonabelian SU(2) gauge field is also included in the total action. The mass of the solutions admitting a power series expansion in $1/r$ at infinity and preserving the asymptotic anti-de Sitter geometry is computed by using a counterterm subtraction method. Numerical arguments are presented for the existence of hairy black hole solutions …
Resorting to the notion of a stress tensor induced on the boundary of a spacetime, we compute the conserved charges associated to exact solutions of New Massive Gravity that obey weakened versions of AdS_3 asymptotic boundary conditions. The computation requires the introduction of additional counterterms, which play the role of regularizing the semiclassical stress tensor in the boundary theory. We show that, if treated appropriately, different ways of prescribing asymptotically AdS_3 boundary conditions yield finite conserved charges for the solutions. The consistency of the construction man…
We propose an algorithm, based on Algebraic Renormalization, that allows the restoration of Slavnov-Taylor invariance at every order of perturbation expansion for an anomaly-free BRS invariant gauge theory. The counterterms are explicitly constructed in terms of a set of one-particle-irreducible Feynman amplitudes evaluated at zero momentum (and derivatives of them). The approach is here discussed in the case of the abelian Higgs-Kibble model, where the zero momentum limit can be safely performed. The normalization conditions are imposed by means of the Slavnov-Taylor invariants and are chosen…
We construct concrete counterterms of the Balasubramanian-Kraus type for Einstein-scalar theories with designer gravity boundary conditions in AdS$_{4}$, so that the total action is finite on-shell and satisfy a well defined variational principle for an arbitrary scalar field potential. We focus on scalar fields with the conformal mass, $m^{2}=-2l^{-2}$, and show that the holographic mass matches the Hamiltonian mass for any boundary conditions. We compute the trace anomaly of the dual field theory in the generic case, as well as when there exist logarithmic branches of non-linear origin. As e…
We construct spherically and axially symmetric monopoles in SU(5) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory both in flat and curved space as well as spherical and axial non-abelian, ''hairy'' black holes. We find that in analogy to the SU(2) case, the flat space monopoles are either non-interacting (in the BPS limit) or repelling. In curved space, however, gravity is able to overcome the repulsion for suitable choices of the Higgs coupling constants and the gravitational coupling. In addition, we confirm that indeed all qualitative features of (gravitating) SU(2) monopoles are found as well in the SU(5) case. F…
We construct finite mass, asymptotically flat black hole solutions in d=4 Einstein-Yang-Mills theory augmented with higher order curvature terms of the gauge field. They possess non-Abelian hair in addition to Coulomb electric charge, and, below some non-zero critical temperature, they are thermodynamically preferred over the Reissner-Nordstrom solution. Our results indicate the existence of hairy non-Abelian black holes which are stable under linear, spherically symmetric perturbations.
The d=5 Reissner-Nordstrom black hole becomes unstable when considered as a solution of Einstein--Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons theory. The existence of a marginally stable mode gives rise to a new branch of black holes with non-Abelian magnetic fields outside the horizon. These solutions carry a nonzero electric charge and have finite mass. We argue that these features manifest themselves both for Minkowski and (Anti-)de Sitter asymptotics. The properties of solutions in a de Sitter background are new to the present work and are emphasised. All solutions constructed have finite mass by virtue of t…
We extend previous work on antifield dependent local BRST cohomology for matter coupled gauge theories of Yang-Mills type to the case of gauge groups that involve free abelian factors. More precisely, we first investigate in a model independent way how the dynamics enters the computation of the cohomology for a general class of Lagrangians in general spacetime dimensions. We then discuss explicit solutions in the case of specific models. Our analysis has implications for the structure of characteristic cohomology and for consistent deformations of the classical models, as well as for divergenc…
We show how to bosonize two-dimensional non-abelian models using finite chiral determinants calculated from a Gauss decomposition. The calculation is quite straightforward and hardly more involved than for the abelian case. In particular, the counterterm $A\bar A$, which is normally motivated from gauge invariance and then added by hand, appears naturally in this approach.

The one-loop renormalization of the abelian Higgs-Kibble model in a general 't Hooft gauge and with chiral fermions is fully worked out within dimensional renormalization scheme with a non-anticommuting $γ_5$. The anomalous terms introduced in the Slavnov-Taylor identities by the minimal subtraction algorithm are calculated and the asymmetric counterterms needed to restore the BRS symmetry, if the anomaly cancellation conditions are met, are computed. The computations draw heavily from regularized action principles and Algebraic Renormalization theory.
This paper is part of a series of papers exploring the renormalization of field theories coupled to gravity using the effective field theory framework. In previous works we studied the universality of the electric charge and the two-loops beta function in the Einstein-QED system. Now, we use this framework to study the non-Abelian gauge theory with fermions coupled to gravity. We show that even though some of the counterterms are dependent on the gravitational coupling, the renormalized coupling constant, and therefore the beta function, do not receive any gravitational correction at one-loop …
We consider a lattice discretization of a covariantly gauge-fixed abelian gauge theory. The gauge fixing is part of the action defining the theory, and we study the phase diagram in detail. As there is no BRST symmetry on the lattice, counterterms are needed, and we construct those explicitly. We show that the proper adjustment of these counterterms drives the theory to a new type of phase transition, at which we recover a continuum theory of (free) photons. We present both numerical and (one-loop) perturbative results, and show that they are in good agreement near this phase transition. Since…
We consider the problem of constructing the fully gauged effective action in $2n$-dimensional space-time for Nambu-Goldstone bosons valued in a homogeneous space $G/H$, with the requirement that the action be a solution of the anomalous Ward identity and be invariant under the gauge transformations of $H$. We show that this can be done whenever the homotopy group $π_{2n}(G/H)$ is trivial, $G/H$ is reductive and $H$ is embedded in $G$ so as to be anomaly free, in particular if $H$ is an anomaly safe group. We construct the necessary generalization of the Bardeen counterterm and give explicit fo…
We investigate whether supertranslation symmetry may appear in a scenario that involves black holes in AdS space. The framework we consider is massive 3D gravity, which admits a rich black hole phase space, including stationary AdS black holes with softly decaying hair. We consider a set of asymptotic conditions that permits such decaying near the boundary, and which, in addition to the local conformal symmetry, is preserved by an extra local current. The corresponding algebra of diffeomorphisms consists of two copies of Virasoro algebra in semi-direct sum with an infinite-dimensional Abelian …
We consider, in the harmonic superspace approach, the six-dimensional N=(1,0) supersymmetric model of abelian gauge multiplet coupled to a hypermultiplet. The superficial degree of divergence is evaluated and the structure of possible one-loop divergences is analyzed. Using the superfield proper-time and background-field technique, we compute the divergent part of the one-loop effective action depending on both the gauge multiplet and the hypermultiplet. The corresponding counterterms contain the purely gauge multiplet contribution together with the mixed contributions of the gauge multiplet a…
We consider theories with gauged chiral fermions in which there are abelian anomalies, and no nonabelian anomalies (but there may be nonabelian gauge fields present). We construct an associated theory that is gauge-invariant, renormalizable, and with the same particle content, by adding a finite number of terms to the action. Alternatively one can view the new theory as arising from the original theory by using another regularization, one that is gauge-invariant. The situation is reminiscent of the mechanism of adding Fadeev-Popov ghosts to an unsatisfactory gauge theory, to arrive at the usua…
We construct numerically the symmetric non-Abelian wormholes which are supported by a phantom field in the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory beyond Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) limit where the Higgs self-interaction constant $λ$ is non-vanishing. Analogous to the BPS limit, the probe limit is the Yang-Mills-Higgs field in the background of the Ellis wormhole when the gravity is switched off. In the presence of gravity, the wormhole solutions possess the Yang-Mills-Higgs hair where families of hairy wormholes solutions emerge from the Ellis wormhole when the gravitational coupling consta…

We consider a gauge symmetry in a quantum Hilbert space. The symmetry leads to that of the heat-kernel and of the anomaly formulae which were previously obtained by the authors. This greatly simplifies and clarifies the structure of the formulae. We explicitly obtain the anomaly formulae in two and four dimensions, which ``unify'' all kinds of anomaly. The symmetry corresponds to that of the counterterm formulae in the background field method. As an example, the non-abelian anomaly is considered.
We present new planar dyonic black hole solutions of the ${\mathfrak {su}}(N)$ Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-time, focussing on ${\mathfrak {su}}(2)$ and ${\mathfrak {su}}(3)$ gauge groups. The magnetic part of the gauge field forms a condensate close to the planar event horizon. We compare the free energy of a non-Abelian hairy black hole with that of an embedded Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black hole having the same Hawking temperature and electric charge. We find that the hairy black holes have lower free energy. We present evidence that…
Recent results concerning the internal structure of static spherically-symmetric non-Abelian black holes in the Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) theory and its generalizations including scalar fields are reviewed and discussed with an emphasis on the problem of a generic singularity in black holes. It is argued that in the theories admitting a violation of the naive no-hair conjecture the structure of singularity is essentially affected by the "hair roots". This invalidates an image of a non-Abelian black hole as a Schwarzschild black hole sitting inside the soliton. We give an analytic description o…
We analyze (3+1)-dimensional black-hole space-times in spontaneously broken Yang-Mills gauge theories that have been recently presented as candidates for an evasion of the scalar-no-hair theorem. Although we show that in principle the conditions for the no-hair theorem do not apply to this case, however we prove that the `spirit' of the theorem is not violated, in the sense that there exist instabilities, in both the sphaleron and gravitational sectors. The instability analysis of the sphaleron sector, which was expected to be unstable for topological reasons, is performed by means of a variat…
A new version of differential renormalization is presented. It is based on pulling out certain differential operators and introducing a logarithmic dependence into diagrams. It can be defined either in coordinate or momentum space, the latter being more flexible for treating tadpoles and diagrams where insertion of counterterms generates tadpoles. Within this version, gauge invariance is automatically preserved to all orders in Abelian case. Since differential renormalization is a strictly four-dimensional renormalization scheme it looks preferable for application in each situation when dimens…
We investigate the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric black hole solutions in a four-dimensional Einstein--Yang-Mills-SU(2) theory with a negative cosmological constant. Special attention is paid to configurations with a unit magnetic charge. We find that a set of Reissner-Nordström--Anti-de Sitter black holes can become unstable to forming non-Abelian hair. However, the hairy black holes are never thermodynamically favoured over the full set of abelian monopole solutions. The thermodynamics of the generic configurations possessing a noninteger magnetic charge is also discussed.
We present the analytic Lifshitz solutions for a scalar field model minimally coupled with the abelian gauge field in $N$ dimensions. We also consider the presence of cosmological constant $Λ$. The Lifshitz parameter $z$ appearing in the solution plays the role of the Lorentz breaking parameter of the model. We investigate the thermodynamical properties of the solutions and discuss the energy issue. Furthermore, we study the hairy black hole solutions in which the abelian gauge field breaks the symmetry near the horizon. In the holographic picture, it is equivalent to a second order phase tran…
The one-loop renormalization of a general chiral gauge theory without scalar and Majorana fields is fully worked out within Breitenlohner and Maison dimensional renormalization scheme. The coefficients of the anomalous terms introduced in the Slavnov-Taylor equations by the minimal subtraction algorithm are calculated and the asymmetric counterterms needed to restore the BRS symmetry, if the anomaly cancellation conditions are met, are computed. The renormalization group equation and its coefficients are worked out in the anomaly free case. The computations draw heavily from the existence of a…
We study the structure of gauge and gravitational anomalies in 2d N=(0,2) theories obtained by compactification of F-theory on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 5-folds. Abelian gauge anomalies, induced at 1-loop in perturbation theory, are cancelled by a generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism operating at the level of chiral scalar fields in the 2d supergravity theory. We derive closed expressions for the gravitational and the non-abelian and abelian gauge anomalies including the Green-Schwarz counterterms. These expressions involve topological invariants of the underlying elliptic fibration and t…
We discuss magnetic monopole solutions of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations with a positive cosmological constant. These configurations approach asymptotically the de Sitter spacetime background and exist only for a nonzero Higgs potential. We find that the total mass of the solutions within the cosmological horizon is finite. However, their mass evaluated by using the surface counterterm method outside the cosmological horizon at early/late time infinity generically diverges. Magnetic monopole solutions with finite mass and noninteger charge are found however in a truncation of the theo…
We consider a theory with gauge group $G \times U(1)_A$ containing: i) an abelian factor for which the chiral matter content of the theory is anomalous $\sum_{f} q^f_A \neq 0 \neq \sum_{f} (q^f_A)^3$ ; ii) a nonanomalous factor $G$. In these models, the calculation of consistent gauge anomalies usually found in the literature as a solution to the Zumino-Stora descent equations is reconsidered. Another solution of the descent equations that differs on the terms involving mixed gauge anomalies is presented on this paper. The origin of their difference is analysed, and using Fujikawa's formalism …
We analyze the large-order behaviour in perturbation theory of classes of diagrams with an arbitrary number of chains (i.e. photon lines, dressed by vacuum polarization insertions). We derive explicit formulae for the leading and subleading divergence as $n\to\infty$, and a complete result for the vacuum polarization at the next-to-leading order in $1/N_f$. In general, diagrams with more chains yield stronger divergence. We define an analogue of the familiar diagrammatic $R$-operation, which extracts ultraviolet renormalon counterterms as insertions of higher-dimension operators. We then use r…
A perturbatively renormalized Abelian Higgs-Kibble model with a chirally coupled fermion is considered. The Slavnov identity is fulfilled to all orders of perturbation theory, which is crucial for renormalizability in models with vector bosons. BRS invariance, i.e. the validity of the identity, forces the chiral anomaly to be cancelled by Wess-Zumino counterterms. This procedure preserves the renormalizability in the one-loop approximation but it violates the Froissart bounds for partial wave amplitudes above some energy and destroys renormalizability from the second order in h bar onwards due…
We investigate the ultraviolet (UV) behaviour of 6D N=1 supersymmetric effective (Abelian) gauge theories compactified on a two-torus ($T_2$) with magnetic flux. To this purpose we compute offshell the one-loop correction to the Wilson line state self-energy. The offshell calculation is actually necessary to capture the usual effective field theory expansion in powers of $(\partial/Λ)$. Particular care is paid to the regularization of the (divergent) momentum integrals, which is relevant for identifying the corresponding counterterm(s). We find a counterterm which is a new higher dimensional e…
Abelian anomaly is examined by means of the recently proposed gauge invariant regularization for SO(10) chiral gauge theory and its generalization for a theory of arbitrary gauge group with anomaly-free chiral fermion contents. For both cases it is shown that the anomaly with correct normalization can be obtained in a gauge invariant form without any counterterms.
We analyze the renormalization group flow in a recently constructed class of integrable sigma-models which interpolate between WZW current algebra models and the non-Abelian T-duals of PCM for a simple group G. They are characterized by the integer level k of the current algebra, a deformation parameter lambda and they exhibit a remarkable invariance involving the inversion of lambda. We compute the beta-function for lambda to leading order in 1/k. Based on agreement with previous results for the exact beta-function of the non-Abelian bosonized Thirring model and matching global symmetries, we…
The particular structure of Galileon interactions allows for higher-derivative terms while retaining second order field equations for scalar fields and Abelian $p$-forms. In this work we introduce an index-free formulation of these interactions in terms of two sets of Grassmannian variables. We employ this to construct Galileon interactions for mixed-symmetry tensor fields and coupled systems thereof. We argue that these tensors are the natural generalization of scalars with Galileon symmetry, similar to $p$-forms and scalars with a shift-symmetry. The simplest case corresponds to linearised g…
This review provides a detailed introduction to chiral gauge theories, renormalization theory, and the application of dimensional regularization with the non-anticommuting BMHV scheme for $γ_5$. One goal is to show how chiral gauge theories can be renormalized despite the spurious breaking of gauge invariance and how to obtain the required symmetry-restoring counterterms. A second goal is to familiarize the reader with the theoretical basis of the renormalization of chiral gauge theories, the theorems that guarantee the existence of renormalized chiral gauge theories at all orders as consisten…
Essential to QCD applications of the operator product expansion, etc., is a knowledge of those operators that mix with gauge-invariant operators. A standard theorem asserts that the renormalization matrix is triangular: Gauge-invariant operators have `alien' gauge-variant operators among their counterterms, but, with a suitably chosen basis, the necessary alien operators have only themselves as counterterms. Moreover, the alien operators are supposed to vanish in physical matrix elements. A recent calculation by Hamberg and van Neerven apparently contradicts these results. By explicit calculat…
Following arXiv:1907.04737, we continue our investigation of the relation between the renormalizability (with finitely many couplings) and integrability in 2d $σ$-models. We focus on the "$λ$-model," an integrable model associated to a group or symmetric space and containing as special limits a (gauged) WZW model and an "interpolating model" for non-abelian duality. The parameters are the WZ level $k$ and the coupling $λ$, and the fields are $g$, valued in a group $G$, and a 2d vector $A_\pm$ in the corresponding algebra. We formulate the $λ$-model as a $σ$-model on an extended $G \times G \ti…
Einsteinian cubic gravity provides a holographic toy model of a nonsupersymmetric CFT in three dimensions, analogous to the one defined by Quasi-topological gravity in four. The theory admits explicit non-hairy AdS$_4$ black holes and allows for numerous exact calculations, fully nonperturbative in the new coupling. We identify several entries of the AdS/CFT dictionary for this theory, and study its thermodynamic phase space, finding interesting new phenomena. We also analyze the dependence of Rényi entropies for disk regions on universal quantities characterizing the CFT. In addition, we show…
This paper proves that it is possible to build a Lagrangian for quantum electrodynamics which makes it explicit that the photon mass is eventually set to zero in the physical part on observational ground. Gauge independence is achieved upon considering the joint effect of gauge-averaging term and ghost fields. It remains possible to obtain a counterterm Lagrangian where the only non-gauge-invariant term is proportional to the squared divergence of the potential, while the photon propagator in momentum space falls off like 1 over (k-squared) at large k, which indeed agrees with perturbative ren…
We consider an Abelian gauge field coupled to a particular truncation of Horndeski theory. The Galileon field has translation symmetry and couples non minimally both to the metric and the gauge field. When the gauge-scalar coupling is zero the gauge field reduces to a standard Maxwell field. By taking into account the symmetries of the action, we construct charged black hole solutions. Allowing the scalar field to softly break symmetries of spacetime we construct black holes where the scalar field is regular on the black hole event horizon. Some of these solutions can be interpreted as the equ…
In this thesis, two different aspects of asymptotically charged rotating black branes in various dimensions are studied. In the first part, the thermodynamics of these spacetimes is investigated, while in the second part the no hair theorem for these spacetimes in four dimensions is considered. In part I, first, the Euclidean actions of a d-dimensional charged rotating black brane are computed through the use of the counterterms renormalization method both in the canonical and the grand-canonical ensemble, and it is shown that the logarithmic divergencies associated to the Weyl anomalies and m…
