The non-Abelian aether-like Lorentz-breaking term, involving triple and quartic self-coupling vertices, is generated from the non-Abelian generalization of the Lorentz-breaking extended QED including only a minimal spinor-vector interaction. This term is shown explicitly to be finite and non-ambiguous.
The Yang-Mills-aether theory is considered. Implications of the non-abelian aether-like term, which introduces violation of Lorentz symmetry, is investigated in a thermal quantum field theory. The Thermofield Dynamics formalism is used to introduce the temperature effects and spatial compactification. As a consequence, corrections due to the non-abelian aether term are calculated for the non-abelian Stefan-Boltzmann law and for the non-abelian Casimir energy and pressure at zero and finite temperature.
In this paper, we treat the proper path integral quantization of the Yang-Mills-aether (YM-aether) system by dealing with the extra gauge copies in the Landau gauge. Within Gribov's prescription to get rid of such remaining gauge copies, we explicitly derive the Gribov parameter dependence of the coupling constant and of the Lorentz violation aether term. The ultraviolet limit is investigated under the light of recent bounds on the magnitude of the non-Abelian aether parameter, and we show that the Gribov parameter can be disregarded in that limit.
In this paper, we consider the perturbative generation of the CPT-even aether-like Lorentz-breaking term in the extended Lorentz-breaking QED within different approaches and discuss its ambiguities.
Within the superfield method we extend the formulation of the Lorentz-breaking aether superspace for supergauge theories, both in three- and in four-dimensional cases.
Within the superfield approach, we formulate the superfield supersymmetric aether-like Lorentz-breaking models, both in three- and in four-dimensional cases.
We demonstrate the generation of the CPT-even, aether-like Lorentz-breaking actions for the scalar and electromagnetic fields via their appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling to spinor fields in three, four and five space-time dimensions. Besides, we show that the aether-like terms for the spinor field also can be generated as a consequence of the same couplings. Also we discuss the dispersion relations in the theories with aether-like Lorentz-breaking terms and find the tree-level effective (Breit) potential for fermion scattering and the one-loop effective potential corresponding to the actio…
We investigate new aspects related to the abelian gauge-Higgs model with the addition of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw term. We focus on one-loop quantum corrections to the photon and Higgs sectors due to spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry and show that new finite and definite Lorentz-breaking terms are induced. Specifically in the gauge sector, a CPT-even aether term is induced. Besides, aspects of the one-loop renormalization of the background vector dependent terms are discussed.
We extend the Einstein-aether theory to include the Maxwell field in a nontrivial manner by taking into account its interaction with the time-like unit vector field characterizing the aether. We also include a generic matter term. We present a model with a Lagrangian that includes cross-terms linear and quadratic in the Maxwell tensor, linear and quadratic in the covariant derivative of the aether velocity four-vector, linear in its second covariant derivative and in the Riemann tensor. We decompose these terms with respect to the irreducible parts of the covariant derivative of the aether vel…
We extend the Einstein-aether theory to take into account the interaction between a pseudoscalar field, which describes the axionic dark matter, and a time-like dynamic unit vector field, which characterizes the velocity of the aether motion. The Lagrangian of the Einstein-aether-axion theory includes cross-terms based on the axion field and its gradient four-vector, on the covariant derivative of the aether velocity four-vector, and on the Riemann tensor and its convolutions. We follow the principles of the Effective Field theory, and include into the Lagrangian of interactions all possible t…
In this paper, we take into account the Gribov copies present in 3D Yang-MIlls-Higgs theory with a constant vector background whose presence breaks the Lorentz symmetry. The constant vector background is introduced within the non-Abelian aether term. Here, we show that this term arises as a one-loop correction. The influence of the aether coupling constant on the system is treated afterwards. As a result, we find that for some values of it the theory can be driven from a nonperturbative regime to a perturbative one. In this paper, we work with the Higgs field in the fundamental representation …
It was previously proved that the Gödel-type metrics with flat three-dimensional background metric solve exactly the field equations of the Einstein-Aether theory in four dimensions. We generalize this result by showing that the stationary Gödel-type metrics with nonflat background in $D$ dimensions solve exactly the field equations of the Einstein-Aether theory. The reduced field equations are the $(D-1)$-dimensional Euclidean Ricci-flat and the $(D-1)$-dimensional source-free Maxwell equations, and the parameters of the theory are left free except $c_{1}-c_{3}=1$. We give a method to produce…
Local Lorentz invariance violation can be realized by introducing extra tensor fields in the action that couple to matter. If the Lorentz violation is rotationally invariant in some frame, then it is characterized by an ``aether'', i.e. a unit timelike vector field. General covariance requires that the aether field be dynamical. In this paper we study the linearized theory of such an aether coupled to gravity and find the speeds and polarizations of all the wave modes in terms of the four constants appearing in the most general action at second order in derivatives. We find that in addition to…
We consider new issues of duality in four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking field theories. In particular, we demonstrate that the arising of the aether-like Lorentz-breaking term is necessary in order for the 4D models to display the duality analog between the MCS and self-dual models in 3D. We further study the dispersion relations in both theories and discuss the physical contents of the models involved in this new dualilty.
We study supersymmetric extension of the Einstein-aether gravitational model where local Lorentz invariance is broken down to the subgroup of spatial rotations by a vacuum expectation value of a timelike vector field called aether. Embedding aether into a chiral vector superfield, we construct the most general action which describes dynamics of linear perturbations around the Lorentz-violating vacuum and is invariant under the linearized supergravity transformations. The analysis is performed both in the off-shell non-minimal superfield formulation of supergravity and in the "on-shell" approac…
We consider SU(2) gauge potentials over a space with a compactified dimension. A non-Abelian Fourier transform of the gauge potential in the compactified dimension is defined in such a way that the Fourier coefficients are (almost) gauge invariant. The functional measure and the gauge field strengths are expressed in terms of these Fourier coefficients. The emerging formulation of the non-Abelian gauge theory turns out to be an Abelian gauge theory of a set of fields defined over the initial space with the compactified dimension excluded. The Abelian theory contains an Abelian gauge field, a s…
A four-dimensional Lorentz-breaking non-Abelian Chern-Simons like action is generated as a one-loop perturbative correction via an appropriate Lorentz-breaking coupling of the non-Abelian gauge field to the spinor field. This term is shown to be regularization dependent but nevertheless it can be found unambiguously in different regularization schemes at zero and finite temperature.
We point out that the concept of Abelian projection gives us a physical interpretation of the role that the Hitchin fibration of parabolic K(D) pairs plays in the large-N limit of four-dimensional QCD. This physical interpretation furnishes also a simple criterium for the confinement of electric fluxes in the large-N limit of QCD. There is also an alternative, compatible interpretation, based on the QCD string.
We compute the exact effective string vacuum backgrounds of the level $k = 81/19 SU(2,1)/U(1)$ coset model. A compact SU(2) isometry present in this seven dimensional solution allows to interpreting it after compactification as a four dimensional non-abelian SU(2) charged instanton with a singular submanifold and an $SO(3) \times U(1)$ isometry. The semiclassical backgrounds, solutions of the type II strings, present similar characteristics.
An arbitrary dimensional expression is given for the anomalous dimension of the fermion field in a model with a four point interaction and a $U(1)$ gauge field, at $O(1/N^2)$ within a large flavour expansion in the Landau gauge.
In Dyson-Schwinger studies of the Yang-Mills propagators the four-gluon interaction has been usually neglected due to the related technical difficulties with the associated two-loop terms and especially their renormalization. A possible scenario to renormalize these fully-dressed two-loop terms is presented. Preliminary results for the Landau gauge gluon propagator are shown. Implications for the gluon propagators in maximally Abelian gauge are discussed.
We study the compatibility between the $BPST SU(2)$ instanton and the fuzzy four-sphere algebra. By using the projective module point of view as an intermediate step, we are able to identify a non-commutative solution of the matrix model equations of motion which minimally extends the SU(2) instanton solution on the classical sphere $S^4$. We also propose to extend the non-trivial second Chern class with the five-dimensional noncommutative Chern-Simons term.
We compute the anomalous dimension of the fermion field with N_f flavours in the fundamental representation of a general Lie colour group in the non-abelian Thirring model at four loops. The implications on the renormalization of the two point Green's function through the loss of multiplicative renormalizability of the model in dimensional regularization due to the appearance of evanescent four fermi operators are considered at length. We observe the appearance of one new colour group Casimir, d_F^{abcd} d_F^{abcd}, in the final four loop result and discuss its consequences for the relation of…
Using generalized field strength tensors for non-Abelian tensor gauge fields one can explicitly construct all possible Lorentz invariant quadratic forms for rank-4 non-Abelian tensor gauge fields and demonstrate that there exist only two linear combinations of them which form a gauge invariant Lagrangian. Together with the previous construction of independent gauge invariant forms for rank-2 and rank-3 tensor gauge fields this construction proves the uniqueness of early proposed general Lagrangian up to rank-4 tensor fields. Expression for the coefficients of the general Lagrangian is presente…
We carry out the N=1 supersymmetrization of a physical non-Abelian tensor with non-trivial consistent couplings in four dimensions. Our system has three multiplets: (i) The usual non-Abelian vector multiplet (VM) (A_μ^I, λ^I), (ii) A non-Abelian tensor multiplet (TM) (B_{μν}{}^I, χ^I, φ^I), and (iii) A compensator vector multiplet (CVM) (C_μ^I, ρ^I). All of these multiplets are in the adjoint representation of a non-Abelian group G. Unlike topological theory, all of our fields are propagating with kinetic terms. The C_μ^I-field plays the role of a Stueckelberg compensator absorbed into the lon…
In a class of non-Abelian solitonic vortex strings supported in certain N=2 super-Yang-Mills theories we search for the vortex which can behave as a critical fundamental string. We use the Polchinski-Strominger criterion of the ultraviolet completeness. We identify an appropriate four-dimensional bulk theory: it has the U(2) gauge group, the Fayet-Iliopoulos term and four flavor hypermultiplets. It supports semilocal vortices with the world-sheet theory for orientational (size) moduli described by the weighted CP(2,2) model. The latter is superconformal. Its target space is six-dimensional. Th…
We discuss recent progress in describing a certain non-Abelian vortex string as a critical superstring on a conifold and clarify some subtle points. This particular solitonic vortex is supported in four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the U(2) gauge group, N_f=4 quark flavors and the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. Under certain conditions the non-Abelian vortex can become infinitely thin and can be interpreted as a critical ten-dimensional superstring. In addition to four translational moduli the non-Abelian vortex under consideration carries six orientational and size moduli. The vortex modul…
We present a new (variant) formulation of N=1 supersymmetric compensator mechanism for an arbitrary non-Abelian group in four dimensions. We call this `variant supersymmetric non-Abelian Proca-Stueckelberg formalism'. Our field content is economical, consisting only of the two multiplets: (i) A Non-Abelian vector multiplet (A_μ^I, λ^I, C_{μνρ}{}^I) and (ii) A compensator tensor multiplet (B_{μν}{}^I, χ^I, φ^I). The index I is for the adjoint representation of a non-Abelian gauge group. The C_{μνρ}{}^I is originally an auxiliary field Hodge-dual to the conventional auxiliary field D^I. The φ^I …
Non-Abelian vortex strings supported in a certain four-dimensional N=2 Yang-Mills theory with fundamental matter were shown arXiv:1502.00683 to become critical superstrings. In addition to translational moduli non-Abelian string under consideration carries orientational and size moduli. Their dynamics is described by two-dimensional sigma model whose target space is a tautological bundle over the complex projective space. For the N=2 theory with the $U(2)$ gauge group and four fundamental hypermultiplets there are six orientational and size moduli. After combining with four translational modul…
With the goal of constructing the supersymmetric action for all fields, massless and massive, obtained by Kaluza-Klein compactification from type II theory or M-theory in a closed form, we embed the (Abelian) tensor hierarchy of p-forms in four-dimensional, N=1 superspace and construct its Chern-Simons-like invariants. When specialized to the case in which the tensors arise from a higher-dimensional theory, the invariants may be interpreted as higher-dimensional Chern-Simons forms reduced to four dimensions. As an application of the formalism, we construct the eleven-dimensional Chern-Simons f…
We compute the partition function of four-dimensional abelian gauge theory on a general four-torus T4 with flat metric using Dirac quantization. In addition to an SL(4, Z) symmetry, it possesses SL(2,Z) symmetry that is electromagnetic S-duality. We show explicitly how this SL(2, Z) S-duality of the 4d abelian gauge theory has its origin in symmetries of the 6d (2,0) tensor theory, by computing the partition function of a single fivebrane compactified on T2 x T4, which has SL(2,Z) x SL(4,Z) symmetry. If we identify the couplings of the abelian gauge theory τ= {θ\over 2π} + i{4π\over e^2} with …
We investigate the electromagnetic duality properties of an abelian gauge theory on a compact oriented four-manifold by analysing the behaviour of a generalised partition function under modular transformations of the dimensionless coupling constants. The true partition function is invariant under the full modular group but the generalised partition function exhibits more complicated behaviour depending on topological properties of the four-manifold concerned. It is already known that there may be "modular weights" which are linear combinations of the Euler number and Hirzebruch signature of th…
As was shown recently, non-Abelian vortex strings supported in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD with the U(2) gauge group and $N_f=4$ quark multiplets (flavors) become critical superstrings. In addition to the translational moduli non-Abelian strings under consideration carry six orientational and size moduli. Together they form a ten-dimensional target space required for a superstring to be critical. The target space of the string sigma model is a product of the flat four-dimensional space and a Calabi-Yau non-compact threefold, namely, the conifold. We study closed string sta…
We provide the first explicit example of Type IIB string theory compactification on a globally defined Calabi-Yau threefold with torsion which results in a four-dimensional effective theory with a non-Abelian discrete gauge symmetry. Our example is based on a particular Calabi-Yau manifold, the quotient of a product of three elliptic curves by a fixed point free action of Z_2 x Z_2. Its cohomology contains torsion classes in various degrees. The main technical novelty is in determining the multiplicative structure of the (torsion part of) the cohomology ring, and in particular showing that the…
We study essentially non-Abelian backgrounds in the five dimensional N=4 gauged SU(2)$\times$U(1) supergravity. Static configurations that are invariant under either the SO(4) spatial rotations or with respect to the SO(3) rotations and translations along the fourth spatial coordinate are considered. By analyzing consistency conditions for the equations for supersymmetric Killing spinors we derive the Bogomol'nyi equations and obtain their globally regular solutions. The SO(4) symmetric configurations contain the purely magnetic non-Abelian fields together with the purely electric Abelian fiel…
Recently a special vortex string was found [5] in a class of soliton vortices supported in four-dimensional Yang-Mills theories that under certain conditions can become infinitely thin and can be interpreted as a critical ten-dimensional string. The appropriate bulk Yang-Mills theory has the U(2) gauge group and the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. It supports semilocal non-Abelian vortices with the world-sheet theory for orientational and size moduli described by the weighted CP(2,2) model. The full target space is R_4\times Y_6 where Y_6 is a non-compact Calabi-Yau space. We study the above vortex str…
We study topologically massive (B \wedge F) Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories in four dimensions, and reduce them to three dimensions by assuming that the fields do not propagate in one of the spatial directions. For certain gauge choices the reduced theories are the Jackiw-Pi models of massive gauge fields.
Interactions between non-BPS non-Abelian vortices are studied in non-Abelian U(1) x SU(N) extensions of the Abelian-Higgs model in four dimensions. In addition to the usual type I/II Abelian superconductors, we find other two new regimes: type I*/II*.
We generalize our picture in [arXiv:0904.1744], and consider a pure abelian gauge theory on a four-manifold with nonlocal operators of every codimension arbitrarily and simultaneously inserted. We explicitly show that (i) the theory enjoys exact S-duality for certain choices of operator parameters; (ii) if there are only trivially-embedded surface operators and Wilson loop operators, or if there are only Wilson-'t Hooft loop operators, the theory enjoys a more general and exact SL(2,Z) or Γ_0(2) duality; (iii) the parameters of the loop and surface operators transform like electric-magnetic ch…
We derive the off-shell nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for {\it all} the fields of a free Abelian 2-form gauge theory by exploiting the geometrical superfield approach to BRST formalism. The above four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) theory is considered on a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parameterized by the four even spacetime variables x^μ(with μ= 0, 1, 2, 3) and a pair of odd Grassmannian variables θand \barθ(with θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). One of the salient features of our present investigation is that the above nilpotent (anti-)…
We investigate warped compactification with an abelian gauge theory in six dimensions. The vanishing cosmological constant in four dimensions can generically be realized with a regular metric even in a 3-brane background without fine tuning of couplings.
These are the lecture notes of a set of lectures delivered at the 1995 Trieste summer school in June. I review some recent work on duality in four dimensional Maxwell theory on arbitrary four manifolds, as well as a new set of topological invariants known as the Seiberg-Witten invariants. Much of the necessary background material is given, including a crash course in topological field theory, cohomology of manifolds, topological gauge theory and the rudiments of four manifold theory. My main hope is to wet the readers appetite, so that he or she will wish to read the original works and perhaps…
An abelian version of standard general relativity in the Cartan-Palatini gauge-like formulation in four dimensions has been introduced. Traditional canonical analysis utilizing similarities to the akin Husain-Kuchar SU(2) version of gravity has been performed. The model has been next quantized in the canonical path-integral Faddeev-Popov formalism yielding abelian BF theory.
A mechanism using the position-dependent gauge coupling is proposed to localize non-Abelian gauge fields on domain walls in five-dimensional space-time. Low-energy effective theory posseses a massless vector field, and a mass gap. The four-dimensional gauge invariance is maintained intact. We obtain perturbatively the four-dimensional Coulomb law for static sources on the domain wall. BPS domain wall solutions with the localization mechanism are explicitly constructed in the U(1)xU(1) supersymmetric gauge theory coupling to the non-Abelian gauge fields only through the cubic prepotential, whic…
F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold naturally describes non-Abelian gauge symmetries through the singularity structure of the elliptic fibration. In contrast Abelian symmetries are more difficult to study because of their inherently global nature. We argue that in general F-theory compactifications there are massive Abelian symmetries, such as the uplift of the Abelian part of the U(N) gauge group on D7-branes, that arise from non-Kahler resolutions of the dual M-theory setup. The four-dimensional F-theory vacuum with vanishing expectation values for the gauge fields corresponds to …
We present the explicit form for all the four dimensional, static, spherically symmetric solutions in $(4+n)$-d Abelian Kaluza-Klein theory by performing a subset of $SO(2,n)$ transformations corresponding to four $SO(1,1)$ boosts on the Schwarzschild solution, supplemented by $SO(n)/SO(n-2)$ transformations. The solutions are parameterized by the mass $M$, Taub-Nut charge $a$, $n$ electric $\vec{\cal Q}$ and $n$ magnetic $\vec{\cal P}$ charges. Non-extreme black holes (with zero Taub-NUT charge) have either the Reissner-Nordstr\" om or Schwarzschild global space-time. Supersymmetric extreme b…
We present a non-abelian generalization of Witten monopole equations and we analyze the associated moduli problem, which can be regarded as a generalization of Donaldson theory. The moduli space of solutions for SU(2) monopoles on Kähler manifolds is discussed. We also construct, using the Mathai-Quillen formalism, the topological quantum field theory corresponding to the new moduli problem. This theory involves the coupling of topological Yang-Mills theory to topological matter in four dimensions
We tackle the issue of renormalizability for Tensorial Group Field Theories (TGFT) including gauge invariance conditions, with the rigorous tool of multi-scale analysis, to prepare the ground for applications to quantum gravity models. In the process, we define the appropriate generalization of some key QFT notions, including: connectedness, locality and contraction of (high) subgraphs. We also define a new notion of Wick ordering, corresponding to the subtraction of (maximal) melonic tadpoles. We then consider the simplest examples of dynamical 4-dimensional TGFT with gauge invariance conditi…
A formulation of abelian and non-abelian chiral gauge theories is presented together with arguments for the unitarity and renormalisability in four dimensions. IASSNS-HEP-94/70, UM-P-94/96, and RCHEP-94/26.
We study a particular class of Abelian gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models with global U_L(N)xU_R(N) symmetry, where N is the number of fermion flavors. We show, by treating the gauge interaction in the ladder approximation and four-fermion interactions in the leading order of the 1/N expansion, that the renormalization-group beta function of the U(1) gauge coupling has ultraviolet stable fixed points for sufficiently large N. This implies the existence of a nontrivial continuum limit.
Dynamical localization of non-Abelian gauge fields in non-compact flat $D$ dimensions is worked out. The localization takes place via a field-dependent gauge kinetic term when a field condenses in a finite region of spacetime. Such a situation typically arises in the presence of topological solitons. We construct four-dimensional low-energy effective Lagrangian up to the quadratic order in a universal manner applicable to any spacetime dimensions. We devise an extension of the $R_ξ$ gauge to separate physical and unphysical modes clearly. Out of the D-dimensional non-Abelian gauge fields, the …
Static, four-dimensional (4-d) black holes (BH's) in ($4+n$)-d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory with Abelian isometry and diagonal internal metric have at most one electric ($Q$) and one magnetic ($P$) charges, which can either come from the same $U(1)$-gauge field (corresponding to BH's in effective 5-d KK theory) or from different ones (corresponding to BH's with $U(1)_M\times U(1)_E$ isometry of an effective 6-d KK theory). In the latter case, explicit non-extreme solutions have the global space-time of Schwarzschild BH's, finite temperature, and non-zero entropy. In the extreme (supersymmetric) li…
We explain a new construction of self-dual string solutions to the non-abelian two-form self-duality equation proposed in \cite{CK}. This class of self-dual strings is determined by the BPS monopoles in four-dimensions and the self dual string charge is given by the charge of the monopole. Our construction covers the SO(4) invariant self-dual string solutions found previously. We have also constructed, based on the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole, a singular solution that describes two finitely separated M5-branes meeting midway in between. We comment that as BPS monopoles are generally given by th…
We study the abelian sandpile model on the upper half plane, and reconsider the correlations of the four height variables lying on the boundary. For more convenience, we carry out the analysis in the dissipative (massive) extension of the model and identify the boundary scaling fields corresponding to the four heights. We find that they all can be accounted for by the massive pertubation of a c=-2 logarithmic conformal field theory.
