Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite undirected graph. An edge subset $E' \subseteq E$ is a {\em dominating induced matching} ({\em d.i.m.}) in $G$ if every edge in $E$ is intersected by exactly one edge of $E'$. The \emph{Dominating Induced Matching} (\emph{DIM}) problem asks for the existence of a d.i.m.\ in $G$. The DIM problem is \NP-complete even for very restricted graph classes such as planar bipartite graphs with maximum degree 3 but was solved in linear time for $P_7$-free graphs and in polynomial time for $P_8$-free graphs. In this paper, we solve it in polynomial time for $P_9$-free graphs.
The Apollonian networks display the remarkable power-law and small-world properties as observed in most realistic networked systems. Their dual graphs are extended Tower of Hanoi graphs, which are obtained from the Tower of Hanoi graphs by adding a special vertex linked to all its three extreme vertices. In this paper, we study analytically maximum matchings and minimum dominating sets in Apollonian networks and their dual graph- s, both of which have found vast applications in various fields, e.g. structural controllability of complex networks. For both networks, we determine their matching n…
Let $G$ be a graph, a dominating induced matching (DIM) of $G$ is an induced matching that dominates every edge of $G$. In this paper we show that if a graph $G$ has a DIM, then $χ(G) \leqslant 3$. Also, it is shown that if $G$ is a connected graph whose all edges can be partitioned into DIM, then $G$ is either a regular graph or a biregular graph and indeed we characterize all graphs whose edge set can be partitioned into DIM. Also, we prove that if $G$ is an $r$-regular graph of order $n$ whose edges can be partitioned into DIM, then $n$ is divisible by $\binom{2r - 1}{r - 1}$ and $n = \bino…

We investigate the problem of simultaneously dominating all spanning trees of a given graph. We prove that on 2-connected graphs, a subset of the vertices dominates all spanning trees of the graph if and only if it is a vertex cover. Using this fact we present an exact algorithm that finds a simultaneous dominating set of minimum size using an oracle for finding a minimum vertex cover. The algorithm can be implemented to run in polynomial time on several graph classes, such as bipartite or chordal graphs. We prove that there is no polynomial time algorithm that finds a minimum simultaneous dom…

Monadic second order logic can be used to express many classical notions of sets of vertices of a graph as for instance: dominating sets, induced matchings, perfect codes, independent sets or irredundant sets. Bounds on the number of sets of any such family of sets are interesting from a combinatorial point of view and have algorithmic applications. Many such bounds on different families of sets over different classes of graphs are already provided in the literature. In particular, Rote recently showed that the number of minimal dominating sets in trees of order $n$ is at most $95^{\frac{n}{13…
In [M. M. Kanté, V. Limouzy, A. Mary, and L. Nourine. On the enumeration of minimal dominating sets and related notions. SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 28(4):1916-1929, 2014] the authors give an $O(n+m)$ delay algorithm based on neighborhood inclusions for the enumeration of minimal dominating sets in split and $P_6$-free chordal graphs. In this paper, we investigate generalizations of this technique to $P_k$-free chordal graphs for larger integers $k$. In particular, we give $O(n+m)$ and $O(n^3\cdot m)$ delays algorithms in the classes of $P_7$-free and $P_8$-free chordal graphs. As fo…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite undirected graph without loops and multiple edges. A subset $M \subseteq E$ of edges is a {\em dominating induced matching} ({\em d.i.m.}) in $G$ if every edge in $E$ is intersected by exactly one edge of $M$. In particular, this means that $M$ is an induced matching, and every edge not in $M$ shares exactly one vertex with an edge in $M$. Clearly, not every graph has a d.i.m. The \emph{Dominating Induced Matching} (\emph{DIM}) problem asks for the existence of a d.i.m.\ in $G$; this problem is also known as the \emph{Efficient Edge Domination} problem; it is the {\em…
A dominating set of a graph is a set of vertices such that every vertex not in the set has at least one neighbor in the set. The problem of counting dominating sets is #P-complete for chordal graphs but solvable in polynomial time for its subclass of interval graphs. The complexity status of the corresponding problem is still undetermined for directed path graphs, which are a well-known class of graphs that falls between chordal graphs and interval graphs. This paper reveals that the problem of counting dominating sets remains #P-complete for directed path graphs but a stricter constraint to r…
A {\em dominating set} of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a subset of vertices $S\subseteq V$ such that every vertex $v\in V\setminus S$ has at least one neighbor in $S$. Finding a dominating set with the minimum cardinality in a connected graph $G=(V,E)$ is known to be NP-hard. A polynomial-time approximation algorithm for this problem, described here, works in two stages. At the first stage a dominant set is generated by a greedy algorithm, and at the second stage this dominating set is purified (reduced). The reduction is achieved by the analysis of the flowchart of the algorithm of the first stage an…
A set $D$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is a dominating set if every vertex of $G$, which is not in $D$, has a neighbor in $D$. A set of vertices $D$ in $G$ is convex (respectively, isometric), if all vertices in all shortest paths (respectively, all vertices in one of the shortest paths) between any two vertices in $D$ lie in $D$. The problem of finding a minimum convex dominating (respectively, isometric dominating) set is considered in this paper from algorithmic point of view. For the class of weak dominating pair graphs (i.e.,~the graphs that contain a dominating pair, which is a pair of ver…
It is a long-standing open problem whether the minimal dominating sets of a graph can be enumerated in output-polynomial time. In this paper we investigate this problem in graph classes defined by forbidding an induced subgraph. In particular, we provide output-polynomial time algorithms for $K_t$-free graphs and variants. This answers a question of Kanté et al. about enumeration in bipartite graphs.
We study the existence of polynomial kernels, for parameterized problems without a polynomial kernel on general graphs, when restricted to graphs of bounded twin-width. Our main result is that a polynomial kernel for $k$-Dominating Set on graphs of twin-width at most 4 would contradict a standard complexity-theoretic assumption. The reduction is quite involved, especially to get the twin-width upper bound down to 4, and can be tweaked to work for Connected $k$-Dominating Set and Total $k$-Dominating Set (albeit with a worse upper bound on the twin-width). The $k$-Independent Set problem admits…
The question to enumerate all inclusion-minimal connected dominating sets in a graph of order $n$ in time significantly less than $2^n$ is an open question that was asked in many places. We answer this question affirmatively, by providing an enumeration algorithm that runs in time $\mathcal{O}(1.9896^n)$, using polynomial space only. The key to this result is the consideration of this enumeration problem on 2-degenerate graphs, which is proven to be possible in time $\mathcal{O}(1.9767^n)$. We also show new lower bound results by constructing a family of graphs of order $n$ with $Ω(1.4890^n)$ …
In this paper, we study graphs whose matching polynomial have only integer zeros. A graph is matching integral if the zeros of its matching polynomial are all integers. We characterize all matching integral traceable graphs.. We show that apart from K7 n (E(C3) [ E(C4)) there is no connected k-regular matching integral graph if k ? 2. It is also shown that if G is a graph with a perfect matching, then its matching polynomial has a zero in the interval (0, 1]. Finally, we describe all claw-free matching integral graphs.
For $α> 1$, an $α$-approximate (bi-)kernel is a polynomial-time algorithm that takes as input an instance $(I, k)$ of a problem $\mathcal{Q}$ and outputs an instance $(I',k')$ (of a problem $\mathcal{Q}'$) of size bounded by a function of $k$ such that, for every $c\geq 1$, a $c$-approximate solution for the new instance can be turned into a $(c\cdotα)$-approximate solution of the original instance in polynomial time. This framework of lossy kernelization was recently introduced by Lokshtanov et al. We study Connected Dominating Set (and its distance-$r$ variant) parameterized by solution size…
Let $G = (V, E)$ be a graph. A set $S \subseteq V$ is a restrained dominating set (RDS) if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$ and to a vertex in $V - S$. The restrained domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_r(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of a restrained dominating set of $G$. Finding the restrained domination number is NP-hard for bipartite and chordal graphs. Let $G_n^i$ be the family of restrained dominating sets of a graph $G$ of order $n$ with cardinality $i$, and let $d_r(G_n, i)=|G_n^i|$. The restrained domination polynomial (RDP) of $G_n$, $D_r(G_n, x)$ is defi…
We study the dominating set reconfiguration problem with the token sliding rule. It consists, given a graph G=(V,E) and two dominating sets D_s and D_t of G, in determining if there exists a sequence S=<D_1:=D_s,...,D_l:=D_t> of dominating sets of G such that for any two consecutive dominating sets D_r and D_{r+1} with r<t, D_{r+1}=(D_r\ u) U v, where uv is an edge of G. In a recent paper, Bonamy et al studied this problem and raised the following questions: what is the complexity of this problem on circular arc graphs? On circle graphs? In this paper, we answer both questions by proving that …
We give the first linear kernels for the (Connected) Dominating Set problems on H-topological minor free graphs. We prove the existence of polynomial time algorithms that, for a given H-topological-minor-free graph G and a positive integer k, output an H-topological-minor-free graph G' on O(k) vertices such that G has a (connected) dominating set of size k iff G' has one. Our results extend the known classes of graphs on which the Dominating Set and Connected Dominating Set problems admit linear kernels. Prior to our work, it was known that these problems admit linear kernels on graphs excludi…
A set $S\subseteq V(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a dominating set if each vertex has a neighbor in $S$ or belongs to $S$. Let $γ(G)$ be the cardinality of a minimum dominating set in $G$. The bondage number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest cardinality of a set of edges $A\subseteq E(G)$, such that $γ(G-A)=γ(G)+1$. The $d$-Bondage is the problem of deciding, given a graph $G$ and an integer $d\geq 1$, if $b(G)\leq d$. This problem is known to be $\mathsf{NP}$-hard even for bipartite graphs and $d=1$. In this paper, we show that $1$-Bondage is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard, even for the class of $3$-regular …
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A function $f : V(G) \rightarrow \mathcal{P}(\{1, 2, \dotsc, k\})$ is a \textit{$k$-rainbow dominating function} on $G$ if for each vertex $v \in V(G)$ for which $f(v)= \emptyset$, it holds that $\bigcup_{u \in N(v)}f(u) = \{1, 2, \dotsc, k\}$. The weight of a $k$-rainbow dominating function is the value $\sum_{v \in V(G)}|f(v)|$. The \textit{$k$-rainbow domination number} $γ_{rk}(G)$ is the minimum weight of a $k$-rainbow dominating function on $G$. In this paper, we initiate the study of $k$-rainbow domination numbe…
In a recent paper, Beniamini and Nisan gave a closed-form formula for the unique multilinear polynomial for the Boolean function determining whether a given bipartite graph $G \subseteq K_{n,n}$ has a perfect matching, together with an efficient algorithm for computing the coefficients of the monomials of this polynomial. We give the following generalization: Given an arbitrary non-negative weight function $w$ on the edges of $K_{n,n}$, consider its set of minimum weight perfect matchings. We give the real multilinear polynomial for the Boolean function which determines if a graph $G \subseteq…
A set $D\subseteq V$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is called a restrained dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to a vertex in $D$ and to a vertex in $V \setminus D$. The \textsc{Minimum Restrained Domination} problem is to find a restrained dominating set of minimum cardinality. Given a graph $G$, and a positive integer $k$, the \textsc{Restrained Domination Decision} problem is to decide whether $G$ has a restrained dominating set of cardinality a most $k$. The \textsc{Restrained Domination Decision} problem is known to be NP-complete for chordal graphs. In this paper, we stren…
A connected dominating set in a graph is a dominating set of vertices that induces a connected subgraph. Following analogous studies in the literature related to independent sets, dominating sets, and total dominating sets, we study in this paper the class of graphs in which the connected dominating sets can be separated from the other vertex subsets by a linear weight function. More precisely, we say that a graph is connected-domishold if it admits non-negative real weights associated to its vertices such that a set of vertices is a connected dominating set if and only if the sum of the corre…
We algorithmize the recent structural characterization for claw-free graphs by Chudnovsky and Seymour. Building on this result, we show that Dominating Set on claw-free graphs is (i) fixed-parameter tractable and (ii) even possesses a polynomial kernel. To complement these results, we establish that Dominating Set is not fixed-parameter tractable on the slightly larger class of graphs that exclude K_{1,4} as an induced subgraph (K_{1,4}-free graphs). We show that our algorithmization can also be used to show that the related Connected Dominating Set problem is fixed-parameter tractable on claw…
Let $G$ be a graph and $D_s$ and $D_t$ be two dominating sets of $G$ of size $k$. Does there exist a sequence $\langle D_0 = D_s, D_1, \ldots, D_{\ell-1}, D_\ell = D_t \rangle$ of dominating sets of $G$ such that $D_{i+1}$ can be obtained from $D_i$ by replacing one vertex with one of its neighbors? In this paper, we investigate the complexity of this decision problem. We first prove that this problem is PSPACE-complete, even when restricted to split, bipartite or bounded treewidth graphs. On the other hand, we prove that it can be solved in polynomial time on dually chordal graphs (a supercla…
For a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is an $H$-graph if it is an intersection graph of connected subgraphs of some subdivision of $H$. $H$-graphs naturally generalize several important graph classes like interval or circular-arc graph. This class was introduced in the early 1990s by Bíró, Hujter, and Tuza. Recently, Chaplick et al. initiated the algorithmic study of $H$-graphs by showing that a number of fundamental optimization problems are solvable in polynomial time on $H$-graphs. We extend and complement these algorithmic findings in several directions. First we show that for every fixed $H$, the …
Consider a graph with nonnegative node weight. A vertex subset is called a CDS (connected dominating set) if every other node has at least one neighbor in the subset and the subset induces a connected subgraph. Furthermore, if every other node has at least $m$ neighbors in the subset, then the node subset is called a $(1,m)$CDS. The minimum-weight $(1,m)$CDS problem aims at finding a $(1,m)$CDS with minimum total node weight. In this paper, we present a new polynomial-time approximation algorithm for this problem with approximation ratio $2H(δ_{\max}+m-1)$, where $δ_{\max}$ is the maximum degr…
An upper dominating set in a graph is a minimal (with respect to set inclusion) dominating set of maximum cardinality. The problem of finding an upper dominating set is generally NP-hard. We study the complexity of this problem in classes of graphs defined by finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs and conjecture that the problem admits a dichotomy in this family, i.e. it is either NP-hard or polynomial-time solvable for each class in the family. A helpful tool to study the complexity of an algorithmic problem on finitely defined classes of graphs is the notion of boundary classes. However, …
In this paper, we provide polynomial-time algorithms for different extensions of the matching counting problem, namely maximal matchings, path matchings (linear forest) and paths, on graph classes of bounded clique-width. For maximal matchings, we introduce matching-cover pairs to efficiently handle maximality in the local structure, and develop a polynomial time algorithm. For path matchings, we develop a way to classify the path matchings in a polynomial number of equivalent classes. Using these, we develop dynamic programing algorithms that run in polynomial time of the graph size, but in e…
A mixed dominating set $S$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a subset $ S \subseteq V \cup E$ such that each element $v\in (V \cup E) \setminus S$ is adjacent or incident to at least one element in $S$. The mixed domination number $γ_m(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality among all mixed dominating sets in $G$. The problem of finding $γ_{m}(G)$ is know to be NP-complete. In this paper, we present an explicit polynomial-time algorithm to construct a mixed dominating set of size $γ_{m}(G)$ by a parse tree when $G$ is a generalized series-parallel graph.
