In [M. M. Kanté, V. Limouzy, A. Mary, and L. Nourine. On the enumeration of minimal dominating sets and related notions. SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 28(4):1916-1929, 2014] the authors give an $O(n+m)$ delay algorithm based on neighborhood inclusions for the enumeration of minimal dominating sets in split and $P_6$-free chordal graphs. In this paper, we investigate generalizations of this technique to $P_k$-free chordal graphs for larger integers $k$. In particular, we give $O(n+m)$ and $O(n^3\cdot m)$ delays algorithms in the classes of $P_7$-free and $P_8$-free chordal graphs. As for $P_k$-free chordal graphs for $k\geq 9$, we give evidence that such a technique is inefficient as a key step of the algorithm, namely the irredundant extension problem, becomes NP-complete.
An output-polynomial algorithm for the listing of minimal dominating sets in graphs is a challenging open problem and is known to be equivalent to the well-known Transversal problem which asks for an output-polynomial algorithm for listing the set of minimal hitting sets in hypergraphs. We give a polynomial delay algorithm to list the set of minimal dominating sets in chordal graphs, an important and well-studied graph class where such an algorithm was open for a while.
In a graph $G=(V,E)$ with no isolated vertex, a dominating set $D \subseteq V$, is called a semitotal dominating set if for every vertex $u \in D$ there is another vertex $v \in D$, such that distance between $u$ and $v$ is at most two in $G$. Given a graph $G=(V,E)$ without isolated vertices, the Minimum Semitotal Domination problem is to find a minimum cardinality semitotal dominating set of $G$. The semitotal domination number, denoted by $γ_{t2}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a semitotal dominating set of $G$. The decision version of the problem remains NP-complete even when restricted…
A dominating set $D$ in a graph is a subset of its vertex set such that each vertex is either in $D$ or has a neighbour in $D$. In this paper, we are interested in the enumeration of (inclusion-wise) minimal dominating sets in graphs, called the Dom-Enum problem. It is well known that this problem can be polynomially reduced to the Trans-Enum problem in hypergraphs, i.e., the problem of enumerating all minimal transversals in a hypergraph. Firstly we show that the Trans-Enum problem can be polynomially reduced to the Dom-Enum problem. As a consequence there exists an output-polynomial time alg…
Connected Vertex Cover is one of the classical problems of computer science, already mentioned in the monograph of Garey and Johnson. Although the optimization and decision variants of finding connected vertex covers of minimum size or weight are well studied, surprisingly there is no work on the enumeration or maximum number of minimal connected vertex covers of a graph. In this paper we show that the maximum number of minimal connected vertex covers of a graph is at most 1.8668^n, and these can be enumerated in time O(1.8668^n). For graphs of chordality at most 5, we are able to give a bette…
A set $D$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is a dominating set if every vertex of $G$, which is not in $D$, has a neighbor in $D$. A set of vertices $D$ in $G$ is convex (respectively, isometric), if all vertices in all shortest paths (respectively, all vertices in one of the shortest paths) between any two vertices in $D$ lie in $D$. The problem of finding a minimum convex dominating (respectively, isometric dominating) set is considered in this paper from algorithmic point of view. For the class of weak dominating pair graphs (i.e.,~the graphs that contain a dominating pair, which is a pair of ver…
The enumeration of minimal connected dominating sets is known to be notoriously hard for general graphs. Currently, it is only known that the sets can be enumerated slightly faster than $\mathcal{O}^{*}(2^n)$ and the algorithm is highly nontrivial. Moreover, it seems that it is hard to use bipartiteness as a structural aide when constructing enumeration algorithms. Hence, to the best of our knowledge, there is no known input-sensitive algorithm for enumerating minimal dominating sets, or one of their related sets, in bipartite graphs better than that of general graphs. In this paper, we provid…
We characterize the vertices belonging to all minimum dominating sets, to some minimum dominating sets but not all, and to no minimum dominating set. We refine this characterization for some well studied sub-classes of graphs: chordal, claw-free, triangle-free. Also we exhibit some graphs answering to some open questions of the literature on minimum dominating sets.
For an arbitrary undirected simple graph G with m edges, we give an algorithm with running time O(m^4 |L|^2) to generate the set L of all minimal edge dominating sets of G. For bipartite graphs we obtain a better result; we show that their minimal edge dominating sets can be enumerated in time O(m^4 |L|). In fact our results are stronger; both algorithms generate the next minimal edge dominating set with incremental-polynomial delay O(m^5 |L|) and O(m^4 |L|) respectively, when L is the set of already generated minimal edge dominating sets. Our algorithms are tailored for and solve the equivale…
A dominating set of a graph is a set of vertices such that every vertex not in the set has at least one neighbor in the set. The problem of counting dominating sets is #P-complete for chordal graphs but solvable in polynomial time for its subclass of interval graphs. The complexity status of the corresponding problem is still undetermined for directed path graphs, which are a well-known class of graphs that falls between chordal graphs and interval graphs. This paper reveals that the problem of counting dominating sets remains #P-complete for directed path graphs but a stricter constraint to r…
We define strongly chordal digraphs, which generalize strongly chordal graphs and chordal bipartite graphs, and are included in the class of chordal digraphs. They correspond to square 0,1 matrices that admit a simultaneous row and column permutation avoiding the Γ matrix. In general, it is not clear if these digraphs can be recognized in polynomial time, and we focus on symmetric digraphs (i.e., graphs with possible loops), tournaments with possible loops, and balanced digraphs. In each of these cases we give a polynomial-time recognition algorithm and a forbidden induced subgraph characteriz…
A tree with $n$ vertices has at most $95^{n/13}$ minimal dominating sets. The growth constant $λ= \sqrt[13]{95} \approx 1.4194908$ is best possible. It is obtained in a semi-automatic way as a kind of "dominant eigenvalue" of a bilinear operation on sixtuples that is derived from the dynamic-programming recursion for computing the number of minimal dominating sets of a tree. We also derive an output-sensitive algorithm for listing all minimal dominating sets with linear set-up time and linear delay between successive solutions.
The question to enumerate all inclusion-minimal connected dominating sets in a graph of order $n$ in time significantly less than $2^n$ is an open question that was asked in many places. We answer this question affirmatively, by providing an enumeration algorithm that runs in time $\mathcal{O}(1.9896^n)$, using polynomial space only. The key to this result is the consideration of this enumeration problem on 2-degenerate graphs, which is proven to be possible in time $\mathcal{O}(1.9767^n)$. We also show new lower bound results by constructing a family of graphs of order $n$ with $Ω(1.4890^n)$ …
An efficient dominating set (or perfect code) in a graph is a set of vertices the closed neighborhoods of which partition the vertex set of the graph. The minimum weight efficient domination problem is the problem of finding an efficient dominating set of minimum weight in a given vertex-weighted graph; the maximum weight efficient domination problem is defined similarly. We develop a framework for solving the weighted efficient domination problems based on a reduction to the maximum weight independent set problem in the square of the input graph. Using this approach, we improve on several pre…
A set $D\subseteq V$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is called a restrained dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to a vertex in $D$ and to a vertex in $V \setminus D$. The \textsc{Minimum Restrained Domination} problem is to find a restrained dominating set of minimum cardinality. Given a graph $G$, and a positive integer $k$, the \textsc{Restrained Domination Decision} problem is to decide whether $G$ has a restrained dominating set of cardinality a most $k$. The \textsc{Restrained Domination Decision} problem is known to be NP-complete for chordal graphs. In this paper, we stren…
For a connected graph, a vertex separator is a set of vertices whose removal creates at least two components. A vertex separator $S$ is minimal if it contains no other separator as a strict subset and a minimum vertex separator is a minimal vertex separator of least cardinality. A {\em clique} is a set of mutually adjacent vertices. A 2-tree is a connected graph in which every maximal clique is of size three and every minimal vertex separator is of size two. A spanning tree of a graph $G$ is a connected and an acyclic subgraph of $G$. In this paper, we focus our attention on two enumeration pr…
We investigate the problem of simultaneously dominating all spanning trees of a given graph. We prove that on 2-connected graphs, a subset of the vertices dominates all spanning trees of the graph if and only if it is a vertex cover. Using this fact we present an exact algorithm that finds a simultaneous dominating set of minimum size using an oracle for finding a minimum vertex cover. The algorithm can be implemented to run in polynomial time on several graph classes, such as bipartite or chordal graphs. We prove that there is no polynomial time algorithm that finds a minimum simultaneous dom…
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a simple, undirected and connected graph. A connected dominating set $S \subseteq V$ is a secure connected dominating set of $G$, if for each $ u \in V\setminus S$, there exists $v\in S$ such that $(u,v) \in E$ and the set $(S \setminus \{ v \}) \cup \{ u \} $ is a connected dominating set of $G$. The minimum size of a secure connected dominating set of $G$ denoted by $ γ_{sc} (G)$, is called the secure connected domination number of $G$. Given a graph $ G$ and a positive integer $ k,$ the Secure Connected Domination (SCDM) problem is to check whether $ G $ has a secure conn…
A set $D\subseteq V$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is called a neighborhood total dominating set of $G$ if $D$ is a dominating set and the subgraph of $G$ induced by the open neighborhood of $D$ has no isolated vertex. Given a graph $G$, \textsc{Min-NTDS} is the problem of finding a neighborhood total dominating set of $G$ of minimum cardinality. The decision version of \textsc{Min-NTDS} is known to be \textsf{NP}-complete for bipartite graphs and chordal graphs. In this paper, we extend this \textsf{NP}-completeness result to undirected path graphs, chordal bipartite graphs, and planar graphs. We also…
A connected dominating set in a graph is a dominating set of vertices that induces a connected subgraph. Following analogous studies in the literature related to independent sets, dominating sets, and total dominating sets, we study in this paper the class of graphs in which the connected dominating sets can be separated from the other vertex subsets by a linear weight function. More precisely, we say that a graph is connected-domishold if it admits non-negative real weights associated to its vertices such that a set of vertices is a connected dominating set if and only if the sum of the corre…
\emph{Strictly Chordality-$k$ graphs ($SC_k$)} are graphs which are either cycle-free or every induced cycle is of length exactly $k, k \geq 3$. Strictly chordality-3 and strictly chordality-4 graphs are well known chordal and chordal bipartite graphs, respectively. For $k\geq 5$, the study has been recently initiated in \cite{sadagopan} and various structural and algorithmic results are reported. In this paper, we show that maximum independent set (MIS), minimum vertex cover, minimum dominating set, feedback vertex set (FVS), odd cycle transversal (OCT), even cycle transversal (ECT) and Stein…
A vertex set $D$ in a finite undirected graph $G$ is an efficient dominating set (e.d.s. for short) of $G$ if every vertex of $G$ is dominated by exactly one vertex of $D$. The Efficient Domination (ED) problem, which asks for the existence of an e.d.s.\ in $G$, is known to be \NP-complete even for very restricted graph classes such as for $2P_3$-free chordal graphs while it is solvable in polynomial time for $P_6$-free chordal graphs (and even for $P_6$-free graphs). A standard reduction from the \NP-complete Exact Cover problem shows that ED is \NP-complete for a very special subclass of cho…
We give alternative definitions for maximum matching width, e.g. a graph $G$ has $\operatorname{mmw}(G) \leq k$ if and only if it is a subgraph of a chordal graph $H$ and for every maximal clique $X$ of $H$ there exists $A,B,C \subseteq X$ with $A \cup B \cup C=X$ and $|A|,|B|,|C| \leq k$ such that any subset of $X$ that is a minimal separator of $H$ is a subset of either $A, B$ or $C$. Treewidth and branchwidth have alternative definitions through intersections of subtrees, where treewidth focuses on nodes and branchwidth focuses on edges. We show that mm-width combines both aspects, focusing…
It is a long-standing open problem whether the minimal dominating sets of a graph can be enumerated in output-polynomial time. In this paper we investigate this problem in graph classes defined by forbidding an induced subgraph. In particular, we provide output-polynomial time algorithms for $K_t$-free graphs and variants. This answers a question of Kanté et al. about enumeration in bipartite graphs.
For a simple graph $G=(V,E)$ without any isolated vertex, a cosecure dominating set $D$ of $G$ satisfies the following two properties (i) $S$ is a dominating set of $G$, (ii) for every vertex $v \in S$ there exists a vertex $u \in V \setminus S$ such that $uv \in E$ and $(S \setminus \{v\}) \cup \{u\}$ is a dominating set of $G$. The minimum cardinality of a cosecure dominating set of $G$ is called cosecure domination number of $G$ and is denoted by $γ_{cs}(G)$. The Minimum Cosecure Domination problem is to find a cosecure dominating set of a graph $G$ of cardinality $γ_{cs}(G)$. The decision …
Let $G$ be a graph and $D_s$ and $D_t$ be two dominating sets of $G$ of size $k$. Does there exist a sequence $\langle D_0 = D_s, D_1, \ldots, D_{\ell-1}, D_\ell = D_t \rangle$ of dominating sets of $G$ such that $D_{i+1}$ can be obtained from $D_i$ by replacing one vertex with one of its neighbors? In this paper, we investigate the complexity of this decision problem. We first prove that this problem is PSPACE-complete, even when restricted to split, bipartite or bounded treewidth graphs. On the other hand, we prove that it can be solved in polynomial time on dually chordal graphs (a supercla…
A vertex set $D$ in a finite undirected graph $G$ is an {\em efficient dominating set} (\emph{e.d.s.}\ for short) of $G$ if every vertex of $G$ is dominated by exactly one vertex of $D$. The \emph{Efficient Domination} (ED) problem, which asks for the existence of an e.d.s.\ in $G$, is known to be \NP-complete for chordal bipartite graphs as well as for $P_7$-free graphs, and even for very restricted $H$-free bipartite graph classes such as for $K_{1,4}$-free bipartite graphs as well as for $C_4$-free bipartite graphs while it is solvable in polynomial time for $P_8$-free bipartite graphs as w…
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a subset $D$ of vertex set $V$, is a dominating set of $G$ if every vertex not in $D$ is adjacent to atleast one vertex of $D$. A dominating set $D$ of a graph $G$ with no isolated vertices is called a paired dominating set (PD-set), if $G[D]$, the subgraph induced by $D$ in $G$ has a perfect matching. The Min-PD problem requires to compute a PD-set of minimum cardinality. The decision version of the Min-PD problem remains NP-complete even when $G$ belongs to restricted graph classes such as bipartite graphs, chordal graphs etc. On the positive side, the problem is effic…
Let $G = (V, E)$ be a graph. A set $S \subseteq V$ is a restrained dominating set (RDS) if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$ and to a vertex in $V - S$. The restrained domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_r(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of a restrained dominating set of $G$. Finding the restrained domination number is NP-hard for bipartite and chordal graphs. Let $G_n^i$ be the family of restrained dominating sets of a graph $G$ of order $n$ with cardinality $i$, and let $d_r(G_n, i)=|G_n^i|$. The restrained domination polynomial (RDP) of $G_n$, $D_r(G_n, x)$ is defi…
Let G=(V,E) be a graph. A vertex dominates itself and all its neighbors, i.e., every vertex v in V dominates its closed neighborhood N[v]. A vertex set D in G is an efficient dominating (e.d.) set for G if for every vertex v in V, there is exactly one d in D dominating v. An edge set M is an efficient edge dominating (e.e.d.) set for G if it is an efficient dominating set in the line graph L(G) of G. The ED problem (EED problem, respectively) asks for the existence of an e.d. set (e.e.d. set, respectively) in the given graph. We give a unified framework for investigating the complexity of thes…
Chordal graphs form one of the most studied graph classes. Several graph problems that are NP-hard in general become solvable in polynomial time on chordal graphs, whereas many others remain NP-hard. For a large group of problems among the latter, approximation algorithms, parameterized algorithms, and algorithms with moderately exponential or sub-exponential running time have been designed. Chordal graphs have also gained increasing interest during the recent years in the area of enumeration algorithms. Being able to test these algorithms on instances of chordal graphs is crucial for understa…
Functional equations with one catalytic appear in several combinatorial applications, most notably in the enumeration of lattice paths and in the enumeration of planar maps. The main purpose of this paper is to show that under certain positivity assumptions the dominant singularity of the solutions have a universal behavior. We have to distinguish between linear catalytic equations, where a dominating square root singularity appears, and non-linear catalytic equations, where we - usually - have a singularity of type 3/2.
Given a positive integer $k$, a $k$-dominating set in a graph $G$ is a set of vertices such that every vertex not in the set has at least $k$ neighbors in the set. A total $k$-dominating set, also known as a $k$-tuple total dominating set, is a set of vertices such that every vertex of the graph has at least $k$ neighbors in the set. The problems of finding the minimum size of a $k$-dominating, respectively total $k$-dominating set, in a given graph, are referred to as $k$-domination, respectively total $k$-domination. These generalizations of the classical domination and total domination prob…
Let $G(V,E)$ be a simple, undirected and connected graph. A dominating set $S \subseteq V(G)$ is called a $2$-\textit{secure dominating set} ($2$-SDS) in $G$, if for every pair of distinct vertices $u_1,u_2 \in V(G)$ there exists a pair of distinct vertices $v_1,v_2 \in S$ such that $v_1 \in N[u_1]$, $v_2 \in N[u_2]$ and $(S \setminus \{v_1,v_2\}) \cup \{u_1,u_2 \}$ is a dominating set in $G$. The $2$\textit{-secure domination number} denoted by $γ_{2s}(G)$, equals the minimum cardinality of a $2$-SDS in $G$. Given a graph $ G$ and a positive integer $ k,$ the $ 2 $-Secure Domination ($ 2 $-SD…
Rainbow connection number rc(G) of a connected graph G is the minimum number of colours needed to colour the edges of G, so that every pair of vertices is connected by at least one path in which no two edges are coloured the same. In this paper we show that for every connected graph G, with minimum degree at least 2, the rainbow connection number is upper bounded by γ_c(G) + 2, where γ_c(G) is the connected domination number of G. Bounds of the form diameter(G) \leq rc(G) \leq diameter(G) + c, 1 \leq c \leq 4, for many special graph classes follow as easy corollaries from this result. This inc…
Let $G$ be a finite undirected graph. A vertex {\em dominates} itself and all its neighbors in $G$. A vertex set $D$ is an {\em efficient dominating set} (\emph{e.d.}\ for short) of $G$ if every vertex of $G$ is dominated by exactly one vertex of $D$. The \emph{Efficient Domination} (ED) problem, which asks for the existence of an e.d.\ in $G$, is known to be \NP-complete even for very restricted graph classes such as $P_7$-free chordal graphs. The ED problem on a graph $G$ can be reduced to the Maximum Weight Independent Set (MWIS) problem on the square of $G$. The complexity of the ED proble…
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a set $D\subseteq V$ is called a \emph{disjunctive dominating set} of $G$ if for every vertex $v\in V\setminus D$, $v$ is either adjacent to a vertex of $D$ or has at least two vertices in $D$ at distance $2$ from it. The cardinality of a minimum disjunctive dominating set of $G$ is called the \emph{disjunctive domination number} of graph $G$, and is denoted by $γ_{2}^{d}(G)$. The \textsc{Minimum Disjunctive Domination Problem} (MDDP) is to find a disjunctive dominating set of cardinality $γ_{2}^{d}(G)$. Given a positive integer $k$ and a graph $G$, the \textsc{Disjuncti…
We study graph classes modeled by families of non-crossing (NC) connected sets. Two classic graph classes in this context are disk graphs and proper interval graphs. We focus on the cases when the sets are paths and the host is a tree (generalizing proper interval graphs). Forbidden induced subgraph characterizations and linear time certifying recognition algorithms are given for intersection graphs of NC paths of a tree (and related subclasses). A direct consequence of our certifying algorithms is a linear time algorithm certifying the presence/absence of an induced claw $(K_{1,3})$ in a chor…
We show that problems which have finite integer index and satisfy a requirement we call treewidth-bounding admit linear kernels on the class of $H$-topological-minor free graphs, for an arbitrary fixed graph $H$. This builds on earlier results by Fomin et al.\ on linear kernels for $H$-minor-free graphs and by Bodlaender et al.\ on graphs of bounded genus. Our framework encompasses several problems, the prominent ones being Chordal Vertex Deletion, Feedback Vertex Set and Edge Dominating Set.
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a set $D \subseteq V$ is called a semitotal dominating set of $G$ if $D$ is a dominating set of $G$, and every vertex in $D$ is within distance~$2$ of another vertex of~$D$. The \textsc{Minimum Semitotal Domination} problem is to find a semitotal dominating set of minimum cardinality. Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, the \textsc{Semitotal Domination Decision} problem is to decide whether $G$ has a semitotal dominating set of cardinality at most $k$. The \textsc{Semitotal Domination Decision} problem is known to be NP-complete for general graphs. In this pape…
In this paper, we study the dualization in distributive lattices, a generalization of the well-known hypergraph dualization problem. We in particular propose equivalent formulations of the problem in terms of graphs, hypergraphs, and posets. It is known that hypergraph dualization amounts to generate all minimal transversals of a hypergraph, or all minimal dominating sets of a graph. In this new framework, a poset on vertices is given together with the input (hyper)graph, and minimal ``ideal solutions'' are to be generated. This in particular allows us to study the complexity of the problem un…
In the classic Maximum Weight Independent Set problem we are given a graph $G$ with a nonnegative weight function on vertices, and the goal is to find an independent set in $G$ of maximum possible weight. While the problem is NP-hard in general, we give a polynomial-time algorithm working on any $P_6$-free graph, that is, a graph that has no path on $6$ vertices as an induced subgraph. This improves the polynomial-time algorithm on $P_5$-free graphs of Lokshtanov et al. (SODA 2014), and the quasipolynomial-time algorithm on $P_6$-free graphs of Lokshtanov et al (SODA 2016). The main technical …
