We study a stochastic PDE limit of the height function of the dynamic asymmetric simple exclusion process (dynamic ASEP). A degeneration of the stochastic Interaction Round-a-Face (IRF) model of arXiv:1701.05239, dynamic ASEP has a jump parameter $q\in (0,1)$ and a dynamical parameter $α>0$. It degenerates to the standard ASEP height function when $α$ goes to $0$ or $\infty$. We consider very weakly asymmetric scaling, i.e., for $\varepsilon$ tending to zero we set $q=e^{-\varepsilon}$ and look at fluctuations, space and time in the scales $\varepsilon^{-1}$, $\varepsilon^{-2}$ and $\varepsilon^{-4}$. We show that under such scaling the height function of the dynamic ASEP converges to the solution of the space-time Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We also introduce the dynamic ASEP on a ring with generalized rate functions. Under the very weakly asymmetric scaling, we show that the dynamic ASEP (with generalized jump rates) on a ring also converges to the solution of the space-time Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process on $[0,1]$ with periodic boundary conditions.
In this note we establish the convergence of the stochastic six-vertex model to the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process, under a certain limit regime recently predicted by Borodin-Corwin-Gorin. This convergence holds for arbitrary initial data.
In this paper we consider two models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and the stochastic six-vertex model. We introduce a new class of initial data (which we call {\itshape generalized step Bernoulli initial data}) for both of these models that generalizes the step Bernoulli initial data studied in a number of recent works on the ASEP. Under this class of initial data, we analyze the current fluctuations of both the ASEP and stochastic six-vertex model and establish the existence of a phase transition along a characteristic lin…
This report is the foreword of a series dedicated to stochastic deformations of curves. Problems are set in terms of exclusion processes, the ultimate goal being to derive hydrodynamic limits for these systems after proper scalings. In this study, solely the basic \textsc{asep} system on the torus is analyzed. The usual sequence of empirical measures, converges in probability to a deterministic measure, which is the unique weak solution of a Cauchy problem. The method presents some new features, letting hope for extensions to higher dimension. It relies on the analysis of a family of parabolic…
This paper introduces a multi-species version of a process called ASEP(q,j). In this process, up to 2j particles are allowed to occupy a lattice site, the particles drift to the right with asymmetry 0<q^{2j}<1, and there are n-1 species of particles in which heavier particles can force lighter particles to switch places. Assuming closed boundary conditions, we explicitly write the reversible measures and a self-duality function, generalizing previously known results for two-species ASEP and single-species ASEP(q,j). Additionally, it is shown that this multi-species ASEP(q,j) is dual to its spa…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the positive integers with an open boundary condition. We show that, when starting devoid of particles and for a certain boundary condition, the height function at the origin fluctuates asymptotically (in large time $τ$) according to the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution on the $τ^{1/3}$ scale. This is the first example of KPZ asymptotics for a half-space system outside the class of free-fermionic/determinantal/Pfaffian models. Our main tool in this analysis is a new class of probability measures on Young diagrams that we call half-space…
We consider the ASEP and the stochastic six vertex model started with step initial data. After a long time, $T$, it is known that the one-point height function fluctuations for these systems are of order $T^{1/3}$. We prove the KPZ prediction of $T^{2/3}$ scaling in space. Namely, we prove tightness (and Brownian absolute continuity of all subsequential limits) as $T$ goes to infinity of the height function with spatial coordinate scaled by $T^{2/3}$ and fluctuations scaled by $T^{1/3}$. The starting point for proving these results is a connection discovered recently by Borodin-Bufetov-Wheeler…
We study two generalizations of the asymmetric simple exclusion process with two types of particles. Particles of type 1 can jump over particles of type 2, while particles of type 2 can only influence the jump rates of particles of type 1. We prove that the processes are self-dual and explicitly write the duality function. As an application, an expression for the r-th moment of the exponentiated current is written in terms of r-particle evolution. The construction and proofs of duality are accomplished using symmetry of the quantum groups $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_3)$ and $U_q(\mathfrak{sp}_4)$, with…
We introduce a family of discrete determinantal point processes related to orthogonal polynomials on the real line, with correlation kernels defined via spectral projections for the associated Jacobi matrices. For classical weights, we show how such ensembles arise as limits of various hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials ensembles. We then prove that the q-Laplace transform of the height function of the ASEP with step initial condition is equal to the expectation of a simple multiplicative functional on a discrete Laguerre ensemble --- a member of the new family. This allows us to obtain the…
We prove duality relations for two interacting particle systems: the $q$-deformed totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) and the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). Expectations of the duality functionals correspond to certain joint moments of particle locations or integrated currents, respectively. Duality implies that they solve systems of ODEs. These systems are integrable and for particular step and half-stationary initial data we use a nested contour integral ansatz to provide explicit formulas for the systems' solutions, and hence also the moments. We form Laplac…
We introduce a new method, which we call stochastic fusion, which takes an exclusion process and constructs an interacting particle systems in which more than one particle may occupy a lattice site. The construction only requires the existence of stationary measures of the original exclusion process on a finite lattice. If the original exclusion process satisfies Markov duality on a finite lattice, then the construction produces Markov duality functions (for some initial conditions) for the fused exclusion process. The stochastic fusion construction is based off of the Rogers-Pitman intertwini…
We prove that Schütz's ASEP Markov duality functional is also a Markov duality functional for the stochastic six vertex model. We introduce a new method that uses induction on the number of particles to prove the Markov duality.
We study a new process, which we call ASEP$(q,j)$, where particles move asymmetrically on a one-dimensional integer lattice with a bias determined by $q\in (0,1)$ and where at most $2j\in\mathbb{N}$ particles per site are allowed. The process is constructed from a $(2j+1)$-dimensional representation of a quantum Hamiltonian with $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ invariance by applying a suitable ground-state transformation. After showing basic properties of the process ASEP$(q,j)$, we prove self-duality with several self-duality functions constructed from the symmetries of the quantum Hamiltonian. By mak…
We present a new method for obtaining duality functions in multi-species asymmetric exclusion processes (mASEP), from solutions of the deformed Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations. Our method reproduces, as a special case, duality functions for the self-dual single species ASEP on the integer lattice.
These notes are based on a talk given at the 2018 Arizona School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics. We give a comprehensive introduction to the KPZ universality class, a conjectured class of stochastic process with local interactions related to random growth processes in $1+1$ dimensions. We describe some of the characteristic properties of the KPZ universality class such as scaling exponents and limiting statistics. In particular, we aim to extract the characteristic properties of the KPZ universality class by understanding the KPZ stochastic partial differential equation by a special disc…
We develop spectral theory for the q-Hahn stochastic particle system introduced recently by Povolotsky. That is, we establish a Plancherel type isomorphism result which implies completeness and biorthogonality statements for the Bethe ansatz eigenfunctions of the system. Owing to a Markov duality with the q-Hahn TASEP (a discrete-time generalization of TASEP with particles' jump distribution being the orthogonality weight for the classical q-Hahn orthogonal polynomials), we write down moment formulas which characterize the fixed time distribution of the q-Hahn TASEP with general initial data. …
Our results in this paper are two-fold. First, we consider current fluctuations of the stationary asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), run for some long time $T$, and show that they are of order $T^{1 / 3}$ along a characteristic line. Upon scaling by $T^{1 / 3}$, we establish that these fluctuations converge to the long-time height fluctuations of the stationary KPZ equation, that is, to the Baik-Rains distribution. This result has long been predicted under the context of KPZ universality and in particular extends upon a number of results in the field, including the work of Ferrari and…
We study the asymmetric six-vertex model in the quadrant with parameters on the stochastic line. We show that the random height function of the model converges to an explicit deterministic limit shape as the mesh size tends to 0. We further prove that the one-point fluctuations around the limit shape are asymptotically governed by the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. We also explain an equivalent formulation of our model as an interacting particle system, which can be viewed as a discrete time generalization of ASEP started from the step initial condition. Our results confirm an earlier predictio…
In this note we relate the Hamiltonian of the integrable non-compact spin $s$ XXZ chain to the Markov generator of a stochastic particle process. The hopping rates of the continuous-time process are identified with the ones of a q-Hahn asymmetric zero range model. The main difference with the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), which can be mapped to the ordinary XXZ spin chain, is that multiple particles can occupy one and the same site. For the non-compact spin $\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain the associated stochastic process reduces to the multiparticle asymmetric diffusion model introduced…
We consider the biased card shuffling and the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) on the segment. We obtain the asymptotic of their mixing times: our result show that these two continuous-time Markov chains display cutoff. Our analysis combines several ingredients including: a study of the hydrodynamic profile for ASEP, the use of monotonic eigenfunctions, stochastic comparisons and concentration inequalities.
Stochastic solutions provide new rigorous results for nonlinear PDE's and, through its local non-grid nature, are a natural tool for parallel computation. There are two different approaches for the construction of stochastic solutions: MacKean's and superprocesses. However, when restricted to measures, superprocesses can only be used to generate solutions for a limited class of nonlinear PDE's. A new class of superprocesses, namely superprocesses on signed measures and on distributions, is proposed to extend the stochastic solution approach to a wider class of PDE's.
Stochastic solutions not only provide new rigorous results for nonlinear pde's but also, through its local non-grid nature, are a natural tool for parallel computation. There are two methods to construct stochastic solutions: the McKean method and superprocesses. Here a comparison is made of these two approaches and their strenghts and limitations are discussed.
We study stochastic partial differential equations of the reaction-diffusion type. We show that, even if the forcing is very degenerate (i.e. has not full rank), one has exponential convergence towards the invariant measure. The convergence takes place in the topology induced by a weighted variation norm and uses a kind of (uniform) Doeblin condition.
We study ASEP in a spatially inhomogeneous environment on a torus $ \mathbb{T}^{(N)} = \mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z} $ of $ N $ sites. A given inhomogeneity $ \widetilde{a}(x) \in (0,\infty) $, $x \in \mathbb{T} $, perturbs the overall asymmetric jumping rates $ r < \ell \in (0,1) $ at bonds, so that particles jump from site $ x $ to $ x+1 $ with rate $ r\widetilde{a}(x) $ and from $x+1$ to $x$ with rate $ \ell\widetilde{a}(x) $ (subject to the exclusion rule in both cases). Under the limit $ N\to\infty $, we suitably tune the asymmetry $ (\ell-r) $ to zero like $N^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ and the inhomogenei…
We investigate stochastic quantization as a method to go from a classical PDE (with stochastic time $λ$) to a corresponding quantum theory in the limit $λ\to\infty$. We test the method for a linear PDE satisfied by the free scalar field. We begin by giving some background about the importance of establishing the property of {\em reflection positivity} for the limit $λ\to\infty$. We then prove that the measure determined through stochastic quantization of the free scalar field violates reflection positivity (with respect to reflection of the physical time) for every $λ<\infty$. If a non-linear …
We develop a Renormalization Group (RG) approach to the study of existence and uniqueness of solutions to stochastic partial differential equations driven by space-time white noise. As an example we prove well-posedness and independence of regularization for the $ϕ^4$ model in three dimensions recently studied by Hairer. Our method is "Wilsonian": the RG allows to construct effective equations on successive space time scales. Renormalization is needed to control the parameters in these equations. In particular no theory of multiplication of distributions enters our approach.
We give a survey of recent result regarding scaling limits of systems from statistical mechanics, as well as the universality of the behaviour of such systems in so-called cross-over regimes. It transpires that some of these universal objects are described by singular stochastic PDEs. We then give a survey of the recently developed theory of regularity structures which allows to build these objects and to describe some of their properties. We place particular emphasis on the renormalisation procedure required to give meaning to these equations. These are expanded notes of the 20th Takagi lectu…
In this paper we address again the problem of the connection between multitime Brownian sheet and heat type PDEs. The main results include: the volumetric character of the solutions of the forward (backward) diffusion-like PDEs; the forward mean value of a Brownian process as the solution of the forward heat PDE; the backward mean value of a Brownian process as the solution of the backward heat PDE; the multitime stochastic processes with volumetric dependence; the stochastic partial derivative of a stochastic process with respect to a multitime Wiener process; Hermite polynomials stochastic p…
In the article random functions in modules over the octonion algebra and Cayley-Dickson algebras are investigated. For their study transition measures with values in the octonion algebra and Cayley-Dickson algebras are used. Stochastic integrals over these algebras are studied. They are applied to integration of stochastic PDEs. This approach permits subsequently to analyze and integrate PDEs of orders higher than two of different types including parabolic, elliptic and hyperbolic.
This paper explores the relationship between non-Markovian fully coupled forward-backward stochastic systems and path-dependent PDEs. The definition of classical solution for the path-dependent PDE is given within the framework of functional Itô calculus. Under mild hypotheses, we prove that the forward-backward stochastic system provides the unique classical solution to the path-dependent PDE.
We determine with positive probability the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets of a class of Navier-Stokes α-models at finite viscosity, forced by mildly rough Gaussian white noise.
We prove an existence and uniqueness result for the obstacle problem of quasilinear parabolic stochastic PDEs. The method is based on the probabilistic interpretation of the solution by using the backward doubly stochastic differential equation.
We prove that a version of Smagorinsky Large Eddy model for a 2D fluid in vorticity form is the scaling limit of suitable stochastic models for large scales, where the influence of small turbulent eddies is modeled by a transport type noise.
It is generally argued that the solution to a stochastic PDE with multiplicative noise---such as $\dot{u}=\frac12 u"+uξ$, where $ξ$ denotes space-time white noise---routinely produces exceptionally-large peaks that are "macroscopically multifractal." See, for example, Gibbon and Doering (2005), Gibbon and Titi (2005), and Zimmermann et al (2000). A few years ago, we proved that the spatial peaks of the solution to the mentioned stochastic PDE indeed form a random multifractal in the macroscopic sense of Barlow and Taylor (1989; 1992). The main result of the present paper is a proof of a rigoro…
In this paper, we establish large deviation principle for the strong solution of a doubly nonlinear PDE driven by small multiplicative Brownian noise. Motononicity arguments and the weak convergence approach have been exploited in the proof. Moreover, by using certain a-priori estimates and sequentially weakly Feller property of the associated Markov semigroup, we show existence of invariant probability measure for the strong solution of the underlying problem.
We prove a large deviation principle result for solutions of abstract stochastic evolution equations perturbed by small Levy noise. We use general large deviations theorems of Varadhan and Bryc, viscosity solutions of integro-partial differential equations in Hilbert spaces, and deterministic optimal control methods. The Laplace limit is identified as a viscosity solution of a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation of an associated control problem. We also establish exponential moment estimates for solutions of stochastic evolution equations driven by Levy noise. General results are applied to stoch…
We consider the stochastic Ginzburg-Landau equation in a bounded domain. We assume the stochastic forcing acts only on high spatial frequencies. The low-lying frequencies are then only connected to this forcing through the non-linear (cubic) term of the Ginzburg-Landau equation. Under these assumptions, we show that the stochastic PDE has a unique invariant measure. The techniques of proof combine a controllability argument for the low-lying frequencies with an infinite dimensional version of the Malliavin calculus to show positivity and regularity of the invariant measure. This then implies t…
We prove several pointwise estimates for solutions of linear elliptic (parabolic) equations with measurable coefficients in smooth domains (cylinders) through the weighted $L_{d}$ ($L_{d+1}$)-norm of the free term. The weights allow the free term to blow up near the (latteral) boundary. We also present weighted estimates for occupation times of diffusion processes.
We consider stochastic semilinear partial differential equations with Lipschitz nonlinear terms. We prove existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure and the existence of a solution for the corresponding Kolmogorov equation in the space $L^2(H;ν)$, where $ν$ is the invariant measure. We also prove the closability of the derivative operator and an integration by parts formula. Finally, under boundness conditions on the nonlinear term, we prove a Poincaré inequality, a logarithmic Sobolev inequality and the ipercontractivity of the transition semigroup.
We consider a non-linear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) on $\mathbb R^d$ with a distributional coefficient in the non-linear term. The distribution is an element of a Besov space with negative regularity and the non-linearity is of quadratic type in the gradient of the unknown. Under suitable conditions on the parameters we prove local existence and uniqueness of a mild solution to the PDE, and investigate properties like continuity with respect to the initial condition and blow-up times. We prove a global existence and uniqueness result assuming further properties on the non-li…
In this paper we describe the asymptotic behavior, in the exponential time scale, of solutions to quasi-linear parabolic equations with a small parameter at the second order term and the long time behavior of corresponding diffusion processes. In particular, we discuss the exit problem and metastability for the processes corresponding to quasi-linear initial-boundary value problems.
We study an optimization problem with SPDE constraints, which has the peculiarity that the control parameter $s$ is the $s$-th power of the diffusion operator in the state equation. Well-posedness of the state equation and differentiability properties with respect to the fractional parameter $s$ are established. We show that under certain conditions on the noise, optimality conditions for the control problem can be established.
The present paper continues the study of infinite dimensional calculus via regularization, started by C. Di Girolami and the second named author, introducing the notion of "weak Dirichlet process" in this context. Such a process $\X$, taking values in a Hilbert space $H$, is the sum of a local martingale and a suitable "orthogonal" process. The new concept is shown to be useful in several contexts and directions. On one side, the mentioned decomposition appears to be a substitute of an Itô type formula applied to $f(t, \X(t))$ where $f:[0,T] \times H \rightarrow \R$ is a $C^{0,1}$ function and…
We study scaling limits of the weakly driven Zhang and the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld (BTW) model for self-organized criticality. We show that the weakly driven Zhang model converges to a stochastic partial differential equation (PDE) with singular-degenerate diffusion. In addition, the deterministic BTW model is shown to converge to a singular-degenerate PDE. Alternatively, the proof of the scaling limit can be understood as a convergence proof of a finite-difference discretization for singular-degenerate stochastic PDEs. This extends recent work on finite difference approximation of (deterministic)…
The magnetization ripple is a microstructure formed by the magnetization in a thin-film ferromagnet. It is triggered by the random orientation of the grains in the poly-crystalline material. In an approximation of the micromagnetic model, which is sketched in this paper, this leads to a nonlocal (and strongly anisotropic) elliptic equation in two dimensions with white noise as a right hand side. However, like in singular Stochastic PDE, this right hand side is too rough for the non-linearity in the equation. In order to develop a small-date well-posedness theory, we take inspiration from the r…
We study utility maximization problem for general utility functions using dynamic programming approach. We consider an incomplete financial market model, where the dynamics of asset prices are described by an $R^d$-valued continuous semimartingale. Under some regularity assumptions we derive backward stochastic partial differential equation (BSPDE) related directly to the primal problem and show that the strategy is optimal if and only if the corresponding wealth process satisfies a certain forward-SDE. As examples the cases of power, exponential and logarithmic utilities are considered.
We discuss a class of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations(BSDEs) with no driving martingale. When the randomness of the driver depends on a general Markov process $X$, those BSDEs are denominated Markovian BSDEs and can be associated to a deterministic problem, called Pseudo-PDE which constitute the natural generalization of a parabolicsemilinear PDE which naturally appears when the underlying filtration is Brownian. We consider two aspects of well-posedness forthe Pseudo-PDEs: "classical" and "martingale" solutions.
We propose a reformulation of the convergence theorem of monotone numerical schemes introduced by Zhang and Zhuo for viscosity solutions of path-dependent PDEs, which extends the seminal work of Barles and Souganidis on the viscosity solution of PDE. We prove the convergence theorem under conditions similar to those of the classical theorem in the work of Barles and Souganidis. These conditions are satisfied, to the best of our knowledge, by all classical monotone numerical schemes in the context of stochastic control theory. In particular, the paper provides a unified approach to prove the co…
We apply the paracontrolled calculus to study the asymptotic behavior of a certain quasilinear PDE with smeared mild noise, which originally appears as the space-time scaling limit of a particle system in random environment on one dimensional discrete lattice. We establish the convergence result and show a local in time well-posedness of the limit stochastic PDE with spatial white noise. It turns out that our limit stochastic PDE does not require any renormalization. We also show a comparison theorem for the limit equation.
Stochastic epidemic models on networks are inherently high-dimensional and the resulting exact models are intractable numerically even for modest network sizes. Mean-field models provide an alternative but can only capture average quantities, thus offering little or no information about variability in the outcome of the exact process. In this paper we conjecture and numerically prove that it is possible to construct PDE-limits of the exact stochastic SIS epidemics on regular and Erdős-Rényi networks. To do this we first approximate the exact stochastic process at population level by a Birth-an…
