This report is the foreword of a series dedicated to stochastic deformations of curves. Problems are set in terms of exclusion processes, the ultimate goal being to derive hydrodynamic limits for these systems after proper scalings. In this study, solely the basic \textsc{asep} system on the torus is analyzed. The usual sequence of empirical measures, converges in probability to a deterministic measure, which is the unique weak solution of a Cauchy problem. The method presents some new features, letting hope for extensions to higher dimension. It relies on the analysis of a family of parabolic differential operators, involving variational calculus. Namely, the variables are the values of functions at given points, their number being possibly infinite.
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$ started from step initial data and obtain the exact Lyapunov exponents for $H_0(t)$, the integrated current of ASEP. As a corollary, we derive an explicit formula for the upper-tail large deviation rate function for $-H_0(t)$. Our result matches with the rate function for the integrated current of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) obtained in [Johansson 00](arXiv:math/9903134).
A limit theorem for the total current in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with step initial condition is proved. This extends the result of Johansson on TASEP to ASEP.
We show that a generalized Asymmetric Exclusion Process called ASEP(q,j) introduced by Carinci, Giardina, Redig and Sasamoto converges to the Cole-Hopf solution to the KPZ equation under weak asymmetry scaling.
We study two versions of the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) -- an ASEP on a semi-infinite lattice with an open left boundary, and an ASEP on a finite lattice with open left and right boundaries -- and we demonstrate a surprising relationship between their stationary measures. The semi-infinite ASEP was first studied by Liggett and then Grosskinsky, while the finite ASEP had been introduced earlier by Spitzer and Macdonald-Gibbs-Pipkin. We show that the finite correlation functions involving the first L sites for the stationary measures on the semi-infinite ASEP can be obtained as a nonphy…
In this paper we find explicit formulas for: (1) Green's function for a system of one-dimensional bosons interacting via a delta-function potential with particles confined to the positive half-line; and (2) the transition probability for the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with particles confined to the nonnegative integers. These are both for systems with a finite number of particles. The formulas are analogous to ones obtained earlier for the Bose gas and ASEP on the line and integers, respectively. We use coordinate Bethe Ansatz appropriately modified to account f…
In this note we establish the convergence of the stochastic six-vertex model to the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process, under a certain limit regime recently predicted by Borodin-Corwin-Gorin. This convergence holds for arbitrary initial data.
This is an expanded version of a series of lectures delivered by the second author in June, 2009. It describes the results of three of the authors' papers on ASEP, from the derivation of exact formulas for configuration probabilities, through Fredholm determinant representation, to asymptotics for ASEP with step initial condition establishing KPZ universality. Although complete proofs are in general not given, at least the main elements of them are.
In this paper we show that a variety of interacting particle systems with multiple species can be viewed as random walks on Hecke algebras. This class of systems includes the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), M-exclusion TASEP, ASEP(q,j), stochastic vertex models, and many others. As an application, we study the asymptotic behavior of second class particles in some of these systems.
We study the hydrodynamic behaviour of the asymmetric simple exclusion process on the lattice of size $n$. In the bulk, the exclusion dynamics performs rightward flux. At the boundaries, the dynamics is attached to reservoirs. We investigate two types of reservoirs: (1) the reservoirs that are weakened by $n^θ$ for some $θ<0$ and (2) the reservoirs that create particles only at the right boundary and annihilate particles only at the left boundary. We prove that the spatial density of particles, under the hyperbolic time scale, evolves with the entropy solution to a scalar conservation law on $…
In this paper, we obtain the transition probability formulas for the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) and the $q$-deformed Totally Asymmetric Zero Range Process ($q$-TAZRP) on the ring by applying the coordinate Bethe ansatz. We also compute the distribution function for a tagged particle with general initial condition.
For the asymmetric simple exclusion process on the integer lattice with two-sided Bernoulli initial condition, we derive exact formulas for the following quantities: (1) the probability that site x is occupied at time t; (2) a correlation function, the probability that site 0 is occupied at time 0 and site x is occupied at time t; (3) the distribution function for the total flux across 0 at time t and its exponential generating function.
We introduce a new method, which we call stochastic fusion, which takes an exclusion process and constructs an interacting particle systems in which more than one particle may occupy a lattice site. The construction only requires the existence of stationary measures of the original exclusion process on a finite lattice. If the original exclusion process satisfies Markov duality on a finite lattice, then the construction produces Markov duality functions (for some initial conditions) for the fused exclusion process. The stochastic fusion construction is based off of the Rogers-Pitman intertwini…
We consider the biased card shuffling and the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (ASEP) on the segment. We obtain the asymptotic of their mixing times: our result show that these two continuous-time Markov chains display cutoff. Our analysis combines several ingredients including: a study of the hydrodynamic profile for ASEP, the use of monotonic eigenfunctions, stochastic comparisons and concentration inequalities.
In this paper we consider two models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and the stochastic six-vertex model. We introduce a new class of initial data (which we call {\itshape generalized step Bernoulli initial data}) for both of these models that generalizes the step Bernoulli initial data studied in a number of recent works on the ASEP. Under this class of initial data, we analyze the current fluctuations of both the ASEP and stochastic six-vertex model and establish the existence of a phase transition along a characteristic lin…
We study the $n$-component priority asymmetric simple exclusion process ($n$-ASEP) with reflecting boundaries. We obtain all invariant measures in explicit form and prove reversibility. Using the symmetry of the generator of the process under the quantum algebra $U_q[\mathfrak{gl}(n+1)]$ we construct duality functions with respect to which the $n$-ASEP is self-dual, both for the finite and the infinite integer lattice. For the $n$-ASEP on the infinite lattice we use self-duality to derive in explicit form the time evolution of a family of measures with $K$ shocks in terms of the transition pro…
We study a stochastic PDE limit of the height function of the dynamic asymmetric simple exclusion process (dynamic ASEP). A degeneration of the stochastic Interaction Round-a-Face (IRF) model of arXiv:1701.05239, dynamic ASEP has a jump parameter $q\in (0,1)$ and a dynamical parameter $α>0$. It degenerates to the standard ASEP height function when $α$ goes to $0$ or $\infty$. We consider very weakly asymmetric scaling, i.e., for $\varepsilon$ tending to zero we set $q=e^{-\varepsilon}$ and look at fluctuations, space and time in the scales $\varepsilon^{-1}$, $\varepsilon^{-2}$ and $\varepsilo…
We study a two-component asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) that is equivalent to the ASEP with second-class particles. We prove self-duality with respect to a family of duality functions which are shown to arise from the reversible measures of the process and the symmetry of the generator under the quantum algebra $U_q[\mathfrak{gl}_3]$. We construct all invariant measures in explicit form and discuss some of their properties. We also prove a sum rule for the duality functions.
We prove an extension of a seminal result of Bertini and Giacomin. Namely we consider weakly asymmetric exclusion processes with several distinct initial data simultaneously, then run according to the basic coupling, and we show joint convergence to the solution of the KPZ equation with the same driving noise in the limiting equation. Along the way, we analyze fine properties of nontrivially coupled solutions-in-law of KPZ-type equations.
We study a new process, which we call ASEP$(q,j)$, where particles move asymmetrically on a one-dimensional integer lattice with a bias determined by $q\in (0,1)$ and where at most $2j\in\mathbb{N}$ particles per site are allowed. The process is constructed from a $(2j+1)$-dimensional representation of a quantum Hamiltonian with $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ invariance by applying a suitable ground-state transformation. After showing basic properties of the process ASEP$(q,j)$, we prove self-duality with several self-duality functions constructed from the symmetries of the quantum Hamiltonian. By mak…
We study two generalizations of the asymmetric simple exclusion process with two types of particles. Particles of type 1 can jump over particles of type 2, while particles of type 2 can only influence the jump rates of particles of type 1. We prove that the processes are self-dual and explicitly write the duality function. As an application, an expression for the r-th moment of the exponentiated current is written in terms of r-particle evolution. The construction and proofs of duality are accomplished using symmetry of the quantum groups $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_3)$ and $U_q(\mathfrak{sp}_4)$, with…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$ with an initial data such that in the large time particle density $ρ(\cdot)$ a discontinuity at the origin is created, where the value of $ρ$ jumps from zero to one, but $ρ(-\varepsilon),1-ρ(\varepsilon) >0 $ for any $\varepsilon>0$. We consider the position of a particle $x_{M}$ macroscopically located at the discontinuity, and show that its limit law has a cutoff under $t^{1/2}$ scaling. Inside the discontinuity region, we show that a discrete product limit law arises, which bounds from above the limiting fluctuations…
Tau functions expressed as fermionic expectation values are shown to provide a natural and straightforward description of a number of random processes and statistical models involving hard core configurations of identical particles on the integer lattice, like a discrete version simple exclusion processes (ASEP), nonintersecting random walkers, lattice Coulomb gas models and others, as well as providing a powerful tool for combinatorial calculations involving paths between pairs of partitions. We study the decay of the initial step function within the discrete ASEP (d-ASEP) model as an example…
The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is a model for translation in protein synthesis and traffic flow; it can be defined as a Markov chain describing particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice. In this article I give an overview of some of the connections of the stationary distribution of the ASEP to combinatorics (tableaux and multiline queues) and special functions (Askey-Wilson polynomials, Macdonald polynomials, and Schubert polynomials). I also make some general observations about positivity in Markov chains.
We prove the height functions for a class of non-integrable and non-stationary particle systems converge to the KPZ equation, thereby making progress on the universality of the KPZ equation. The models herein are ASEP [4] with a mesoscopic family of slow bonds, thus we partially extend [16] to non-stationary models and add to the almost empty set of non-integrable, non-stationary interacting particle systems for which universality is established. To do this, we develop further the strategy of [41, 42] introduce a method to establish a novel principle that builds upon the classical hydrodynamic…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the positive integers with an open boundary condition. We show that, when starting devoid of particles and for a certain boundary condition, the height function at the origin fluctuates asymptotically (in large time $τ$) according to the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution on the $τ^{1/3}$ scale. This is the first example of KPZ asymptotics for a half-space system outside the class of free-fermionic/determinantal/Pfaffian models. Our main tool in this analysis is a new class of probability measures on Young diagrams that we call half-space…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$. For continuous densities, ASEP is in local equilibrium for large times, at discontinuities however, one expects to see a dynamical phase transition, i.e. a mixture of different equilibriums. We consider ASEP with deterministic initial data such that at large times, two rarefactions come together at the origin, and the density jumps from $0$ to $1$. Shifting the measure on the KPZ $1/3$ scale, we show that the law of ASEP converges to a mixture of the Dirac measures with only holes resp. only particles. The parameter of…
Introduced in the late 1960's, the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of n sites with open boundaries. It has been cited as a model for traffic flow and protein synthesis. In the most general form of the ASEP with open boundaries, particles may enter and exit at the left with probabilities alpha and gamma, and they may exit and enter at the right with probabilities beta and delta. In the bulk, the probability of hopping left is q times the prob…
We obtain the hydrodynamic limit of a simple exclusion process in an inhomogeneous environment of divergence form. Our main assumption is a suitable version of Gamma-convergence for the environment. In this way we obtain an unified approach to recent works on the field.
We describe the hydrodynamic behavior of the $k$-step exclusion process. Since the flux appearing in the hydrodynamic equation for this particle system is neither convex nor concave, the set of possible solutions include in addition to entropic shocks and continuous solutions those with contact discontinuities. We finish with a limit theorem for the tagged particle.
We consider the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) in which particles jump to the right at rate $p\in(1/2,1]$ and to the left at rate $1-p$, interacting by exclusion. In the initial state there is a finite region such that to the left of this region all sites are occupied and to the right of it all sites are empty. Under this initial state, the hydrodynamical limit of the process converges to the rarefaction fan of the associated Burgers equation. In particular suppose that the initial state has first-class particles to the left of the origin, second-class particles at …
We consider the asymmetric exclusion process. We start from a profile which is constant along the drift direction and prove that the density profile, under a diffusive rescaling of time, converges to the solution of a parabolic equation.
We introduce stochastic Interaction-Round-a-Face (IRF) models that are related to representations of the elliptic quantum group $E_{τ,η}(sl_2)$. For stochasic IRF models in a quadrant, we evaluate averages for a broad family of observables that can be viewed as higher analogs of $q$-moments of the height function for the stochastic (higher spin) six vertex models. In a certain limit, the stochastic IRF models degenerate to (1+1)d interacting particle systems that we call dynamic ASEP and SSEP; their jump rates depend on local values of the height function. For the step initial condition, we ev…
We study a class of interacting particle systems with asymmetric interaction showing a self-duality property. The class includes the ASEP($q,θ$), asymmetric exclusion process, with a repulsive interaction, allowing up to $θ\in \mathbb{N}$ particles in each site, and the ASIP$(q,θ)$, $θ\in \mathbb{R}^+$, asymmetric inclusion process, that is its attractive counterpart. We extend to the asymmetric setting the investigation of orthogonal duality properties done in [8] for symmetric processes. The analysis leads to multivariate $q-$analogues of Krawtchouk polynomials and Meixner polynomials as ort…
We study a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process where jumps happen at rate one, except at the origin where the rate is lower. We prove a hydrodynamic scaling limit to a macroscopic profile described by a variational formula. The limit is valid for all values of the slow rate. The only assumption required is that a law of large numbers holds for the initial particle distribution. This includes also deterministic initial configurations. The hydrodynamic description contains as an unknown parameter the macroscopic rate at the origin, which is strictly larger than the microscopic slow rate.…
This paper summarizes results and some open problems about the large-scale and long-time behavior of asymmetric, disordered exclusion and zero-range processes. These processes have randomly chosen jump rates at the sites of the underlying lattice. The interesting feature is that for suitably distributed random rates there is a phase transition where the process behaves differently at high and low densities. Some of this distinction is visible on the hydrodynamic scale.
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a finite lattice with periodic boundary conditions, conditioned to carry an atypically low current. For an infinite discrete set of currents, parametrized by the driving strength $s_K$, $K \geq 1$, we prove duality relations which arise from the quantum algebra $U_q[\mathfrak{gl}(2)]$ symmetry of the generator of the process with reflecting boundary conditions. Using these duality relations we prove on microscopic level a travelling-wave property of the conditioned process for a family of shock-antishock measures for $N>K$ particles…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$ with initial data such that in the large time particle density $ρ(\cdot)$ a discontinuity (shock) at the origin is created. At the shock, the value of $ρ$ jumps from zero to one, but $ρ(-\varepsilon),1-ρ(\varepsilon) >0 $ for any $\varepsilon>0$. We are interested in the rescaled position of a tagged particle which enters the shock with positive probability. We show that, inside the shock region, the particle position has the KPZ-typical $1/3$ fluctuations, a $F_{\mathrm{GUE}}\times F_{\mathrm{GUE}}$ limit law and a deg…
