Section 4 contains some (minor) errors. Please consult Section 2 of "Base independent algebraic cobordism" instead, where quasi-projectivity, ample line bundles, global generation etc are treated more carefully and in greater generality
The purpose of this note is to extend some classical results on quasi-projective schemes to the setting of derived algebraic geometry. Namely, we want to show that any vector bundle on a derived scheme admitting an ample line bundle can be twisted to be globally generated. Moreover, we provide a presentation of $K^0(X)$ as the Grothendieck group of vector bundles modulo exact sequences on any quasi-projective derived scheme $X$.
We construct projectivization of a parabolic vector bundle and a tautological line bundle over it. It is shown that a parabolic vector bundle is ample if and only if the tautological line bundle is ample. This allows us to generalize the notion of a k-ample bundle, introduced by Sommese, to the context of parabolic bundles. A parabolic vector bundle $E_*$ is defined to be k-ample if the tautological line bundle ${\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb P}(E_*)}(1)$ is $k$--ample. We establish some properties of parabolic k-ample bundles.
We show that tensor products of semiample vector bundles are semiample. For k-ampleness in the sens of Sommese, we show that over compact complex manifolds tensor products of semiample and k-ample vector bundles are k-ample, and the sum of k-ample vector bundles is k-ample. In particular results of Sommese on k-ampleness are strenghtened.
This is an expository article on the recent developments of Hodge theory on moduli spaces of smooth projective varieties with semi-ample canonical line bundles.
In this note we study properties of partially ample line bundles on simplicial projective toric varieties. We prove that the cone of q-ample line bundles is a union of rational polyhedral cones, and calculate these cones in examples. We prove a restriction theorem for big q-ample line bundles, and deduce that q-ampleness of the anticanonical bundle is not invariant under flips. Finally we prove a Kodaira-type vanishing theorem for q-ample line bundles.
We prove that the tensor product of two line bundles, one being $q$-ample and the other with sufficiently low-dimensional base locus, is still $q$-ample.
Hartshorne in "Ample vector bundles" proved that $E$ is ample if and only if $\OOO_{P(E)}(1)$ is ample. Here we generalize this result to flag manifolds associated to a vector bundle $E$ on a complex manifold $X$: For a partition $a$ we show that the line bundle $\it Q_a^s$ on the corresponding flag manifold $\mathcal{F}l_s(E)$ is ample if and only if $ \SSS_aE $ is ample. In particular $\det Q$ on $\it{G}_r(E)$ is ample if and only if $\wedge ^rE$ is ample.\\ We give also a proof of the Ampleness Dominance theorem that does not depend on the saturation property of the Littlewood-Richardson se…
We show that the Nakai--Moishezon ampleness criterion holds for real line bundles on complete schemes. As applications, we treat the relative Nakai--Moishezon ampleness criterion for real line bundles and the Nakai--Moishezon ampleness criterion for real line bundles on complete algebraic spaces. The main ingredient of this paper is Birkar's characterization of augmented base loci of real divisors on projective schemes.
We observe that the proof of the Bogomolov stable restriction theorem can be adapted to give an ampleness criterion for globally generated rank 2 vector bundles on certain surfaces. This applies to the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles, to congruences of lines in P^3, and possibly to the construction of surfaces with ample cotangent bundle (help welcome!).
Any smooth projective variety contains many complete intersection subvarieties with ample cotangent bundles, of each dimension up to half its own dimension.
We show that a pseudoeffective R-divisor has numerical dimension 0 if it is numerically trivial on a subvariety with ample normal bundle. This implies that the cycle class of a curve with ample normal bundle is big, giving an affirmative answer to a question of Peternell. We also give other positivity properties such subvarieties.
We study ample vector bundles on smooth projective stacks. In particular, we prove that the tangent bundle for the weighted projective stack $\mathbb{P}(a_0,...,a_n)$ is ample. A result of Mori shows that the only smooth projective varieties with ample vector bundle are isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^N$ for some $N$. Extending our geometric spaces from varieties to projective stacks, we are able to provide a new example. This leaves the open question of knowing if the only smooth projective stacks are the weighted projective stacks.
We study k-jet ampleness of line bundles on hyperelliptic surfaces using vanishing theorems. Our main result states that on a hyperelliptic surface of an arbitrary type a line bundle of type (m,m) with m\geq k+2 is k-jet ample.
We systematically study the splitting of vector bundles on a smooth, projective variety, whose restriction to the zero locus of a regular section of an ample vector bundle splits. First, we find ampleness and genericity conditions which ensure that the splitting of the vector bundle along the subvariety implies its global splitting. Second, we obtain a simple splitting criterion for vector bundles on the Grassmannian and on partial flag varieties.
We give a simple combinatorial proof of the toric version of Mori's theorem that the only $n$-dimensional smooth projective varieties with ample tangent bundle are the projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^n$.
Our goal is to study the syzygies of the projective embeddings defined by ample line bundles on a fake projective plane S. The syzygies are studied in terms of the property $N_p$. For various kinds of ample line bundles, we give explicit lower bounds for their powers above which the property $N_p$ is satisfied.
Here we study vector bundles $E$ on the Hirzebruch surface $F_e$ such that their twists by a spanned, but not ample, line bundle $M = \mathcal {O}_{F_e}(h+ef)$ have natural cohomology, i.e. $h^0(F_e,E(tM)) >0$ implies $h^1(F_e,E(tM)) = 0$.
We show that local complete intersection subvarieties of smooth projective varieties, which have partially ample normal bundle, possess the G2-property. This generalizes results of Hartshorne and Bădescu-Schneider.
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be an ample vector bundle of rank $r\geq 2$ on a smooth complex projective variety $X$ of dimension $n$. The aim of this paper is to describe the structure of pairs $(X,\mathcal{E})$ as above whose adjoint bundles $K_X+\det\mathcal{E}$ are not nef for $r=n-3$. Furthermore, we give some immediate consequences of this result in adjunction theory.
We study ample stable vector bundles on minimal rational surfaces. We give a complete classification of those moduli spaces for which the general stable bundle is both ample and globally generated. We also prove that if $V$ is any stable bundle, then a large enough direct sum $V^{\oplus n}$ has ample deformations unless there is an obvious numerical reason why it cannot. Previous work in this area has mostly focused on rank two bundles and relied primarily on classical constructions such as the Serre construction. In contrast, we use recent advances in moduli of vector bundles to obtain strong…
The goal of this article is twofold. On one hand, we study the subvarieties of projective varieties which possess partially ample normal bundle; we prove that they are G2 in the ambient space. This generalizes results of Hartshorne and Bădescu-Schneider. We work with the cohomological partial ampleness introduced by Totaro. On the other hand, we define the concept of a partially ample subvariety, which generalizes the notion of an ample subvariety introduced by Ottem. We prove that partially ample subvarieties enjoy the stronger G3 property. Moreover, we present an application to a connectedne…
We define partially ample subvarieties of projective varieties, generalizing Ottem's work on ample subvarieties, and show their ubiquity. As an application, we obtain a connectedness result for pre-images of subvarieties by morphisms, reminiscent to a problem posed by Fulton-Hansen.
Let $X$ be a projective manifold of dimension $n$. Suppose that $T_X$ contains an ample subsheaf. We show that $X$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^n$. As an application, we derive the classification of projective manifolds containing a $\mathbb{P}^r$-bundle as an ample divisor by the recent work of D.~Litt.
A recent paper of Totaro develops a theory of $q$-ample bundles in characteristic 0. Specifically, a line bundle $L$ on $X$ is $q$-ample if for every coherent sheaf $\mathcal{F}$ on $X$, there exists an integer $m_0$ such that $m\geq m_0$ implies $H^i(X,\mathcal{F}\otimes \mathcal{O}(mL))=0$ for $i>q$. We show that a line bundle $L$ on a complex projective scheme $X$ is $q$-ample if and only if the restriction of $L$ to its augmented base locus is $q$-ample. In particular, when $X$ is a variety and $L$ is big but fails to be $q$-ample, then there exists a codimension 1 subscheme $D$ of $X$ suc…

Very ampleness criteria for rank 2 vector bundles over smooth, ruled surfaces over rational and elliptic curves are given. The criteria are then used to settle open existence questions for some special threefolds of low degree.
In this paper, we give a numerical criterion of Reider-type for the $d$-very ampleness of the adjoint line bundles on quasi-elliptic surfaces, and meanwhile we give a new proof of the vanishing theorem on quasi-elliptic surfaces emailed from Langer and show that it is the optimal version.
We study smooth projective complex varieties with ample cotangent bundle. Our main result is that in an abelian variety of dimension n, a complete intersection of at least n/2 general hypersurfaces of sufficiently high degrees has ample cotangent bundle. We discuss the conjecture that the analogous statement should hold in the projective space. Finally, we present a construction due to Bogomolov of varieties with ample cotangent bundle as linear sections of a product of varieties with big cotangent bundle.
It is known that a tilting generator on an algebraic variety $X$ gives a derived equivalence between $X$ and a certain non-commutative algebra. In this paper, we explain a method to construct a tilting generator from an ample line bundle, and construct it in several examples.
Let $E$ be an ample vector bundle of rank $r$ on a projective variety $X$ with only log-terminal singularities. We consider the nefness of adjoint divisors $K_X+(t-r)det(E)$ when $t>=dim(X)$ and $t>r$. As a corollary, we classify pairs $(X,E)$ with $c_r$-sectional genus zero.
By proving an integral formula of the curvature tensor of $E\ts \det E$, we observe that the curvature tensor of $E\ts \det E$ is very similar to that of a line bundle and obtain certain new Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing theorems for vector bundles. As special cases, we deduce vanishing theorems for ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles by analytic method instead of the Leray-Borel-Le Potier spectral sequence.
Given a covering f: X \to Y of projective manifolds, we consider the vector bundle E on Y given as the dual of f_*(Ø_X) / Ø_Y. This vector bundles often has positivity properties, e.g. E is ample when Y is projective space by a theorem of Lazarsfeld. In general however E will not be ample due to the geometry of Y. We prove various results when E is spanned, nef or generically nef, under some assumptions on the base Y.
In this note, we prove effective semi-ampleness conjecture due to Prokhorov and Shokurov for a special case, more concretely, for Q-Gorenstein klt-trivial fibrations over smooth projective curves whose fibers are all klt log Calabi-Yau pairs of Fano type.
We study k-very ampleness of line bundles on blow-ups of hyperelliptic surfaces at r very general points. We obtain a numerical condition on the number of points for which a line bundle on the blow-up of a hyperelliptic surface at these r points gives an embedding of order k.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety of dimension $n$, and let $E$ be an ample vector bundle over $X$. We show that any non-zero Schur class of $E$, lying in the cohomology group of bidegree $(n-1, n-1)$, has a representative which is strictly positive in the sense of smooth forms. This conforms the prediction of Griffiths conjecture on the positive polynomials of Chern classes/forms of an ample vector bundle on the form level, and thus strengthens the celebrated positivity results of Fulton-Lazarsfeld for certain degrees.
A celebrated conjecture of Kobayashi and Lang says that the canonical line bundle $K_X$ of a Kobayashi hyperbolic compact complex manifold $X$ is ample. In this note we prove that $K_X$ is ample if $X$ is projective and satisfies a stronger condition of nondegenerate negative total $k$-jet curvature. We use positivity of direct image sheaves and decomposition of jets in order to produce pluridifferentials on $X$.
In this paper we study the problem of density in (1,3] for the Chern ratio of surfaces with ample cotangent bundle. In particular we prove density in (1,2) by constructing a family of complete intersection surfaces in a product of varieties with big cotangent bundle. We also analyse the case of complete intersections in a product of curves of genus at least 2.
In continuation of our work in Comm. in Algebra, vol. 28 (2000), we study ramified coverings of projective manifolds, in particular over Fano manifolds and investigate positivity properties of the associated vector bundle. Moreover we study the topology of low degree coverings and the structure of the ramification divisor.
This paper generalises Mori's famous theorem about "Projective manifolds with ample tangent bundles" to normal projective varieties in the following way: A normal projective variety over $\mathbb{C}$ with ample tangent sheaf is isomorphic to the complex projective space.
Tangent Spaces of V^r_d(L), Specific subschemes of C_d arising from various line bundles on C, are described. Then we proceed to prove Martense Theorem for these schemes, by which we determine curves C, which for some very ample line bundle L on C and some integers r and d with d\leq h^{0}(L)-2, the subscheme V^r_d(L) might attain its maximum dimension.
Let $\sE$ be an ample rank $r$ bundle on a smooth toric projective surface, $S$, whose topological Euler characteristic is $e(S)$. In this article, we prove a number of surprisingly strong lower bounds for $c_1(\sE)^2$ and $c_2(\sE)$. We also enumerate the exceptions to either the inequality $c_1(\sE)^2\ge 4e(S)$ or the inequality $c_2(\sE)\ge e(S)$ holding.
Sommese has conjectured a classification of smooth projective varieties X containing, as an ample divisor, a P^d-bundle Y over a smooth variety Z. This conjecture is known if d>1, if dim(X)<5, or if Z admits a finite morphism to an Abelian variety. We confirm the conjecture if the Picard rank rho(Z)=1, or if Z is not uniruled. In general we reduce the conjecture to a conjectural characterization of projective space: namely that if W is a smooth projective variety, E is an ample vector bundle on W, and Hom(E, T_W) is non-zero, then W is isomorphic to P^n.
The purpose of this paper is to translate positivity properties of the tangent bundle (and the anti-canonical bundle) of an algebraic manifold into existence and movability properties of rational curves and to investigate the impact on the global geometry of the manifold $X$. Among the results we prove are these: \quad If $X$ is a projective manifold, and ${\cal E} \subset T_X$ is an ample locally free sheaf with $n-2\ge rk {\cal E}\ge n$, then $X \simeq \EP_n$. \quad Let $X$ be a projective manifold. If $X$ is rationally connected, then there exists a free $T_X$-ample family of (rational) cur…
The purpose of this note is to show that $2K$ of any smooth compact complex two ball quotient is very ample, except possibly for four pairs of fake projective planes of minimal type, where $K$ is the canonical line bundle. For the four pairs of fake projective planes, sections of $2K_M$ give an embedding of $M$ except possibly for at most two points on $M$.
In this paper, we studied the map defined by a non-very ample line bundle on some special irregular varieties. As to this topic, it is well known that for a line bundle $L$ on an Abelian variety $A$, the linear system $|2L|$ is base point free, and 3L is very ample, moreover the map defined by the linear system $|2L|$ is well understood (cf. Theorem \ref{oldth}). First, we generalized this classical result to projective bundles over Abelian varieties (cf. Theorem \ref{key}). Then we studied the bicanonical map of an irregular primitive variety $X$ of general type with $dim(X) = q(X)$, in fact …
Let E be an ample vector bundle of rank r on a complex projective manifold X such that there exists a section $s \in Γ(\cal E)$ whose zero locus Z = (s = 0) is a smooth submanifold of the expected dimension dim X - r: = n -r. Assume that Z is not minimal; we investigate the hypothesis under which the extremal contractions of Z can be lifted to X. Finally we study in detail the cases in which Z is a scroll, a quadric bundle or a del Pezzo fibration.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field, and let $L$ be an ample line bundle over $X$. We prove that for any smooth hypersurface $D$ on $X$ in the complete linear system $| L^{\otimes d}|$, the inclusion map $D\hookrightarrow X$ induces an isomorphism of fundamental group schemes, provided $d$ is sufficiently large and $\dim X \geq 3$. If $\dim X = 2$, and $d$ is sufficiently large, then the induced homomorphism of fundamental group schemes remains surjective. We give an example to show that the homomorphism of fundamental group schemes induced by the …
